It’s Tom Bawcock’s Eve and even though I’m not even vaguely Cornish it’s still time to read this wonderful book with my lg! Love this story. I bought it years before I had kids on a winter visit to Mousehole. Beautifully illustrated and a great little story, especially if you like cats!
I wonder if they’re enjoying a fish feast in Mousehole right now…

tell me about cornish history?
(you dont even understand i almsot cried when i saw this thank you)
OK SO for context my mums side of the family is cornish and so i have quite a random specific knowledge of its history and ill stick to my favourite parts, namely cornish pasties and tom bawcocks eve (although i could also talk abt humphrey davy for ages and the mining lamp lmao)
(idk if pasties are a widely known thing? but they’re these like pastry parcels with savoury fillings that look something like this:
(my favourite filling being cheese and onion hands down))
but anyway basically they have these pastry handles almost on the edge with no filling (almost like a pizza crust) where the pastry’s sealed and it’s quite big and has around 20 crimps traditionally and it was brought in solely so that miners could bring them into the mines for lunch. they would have rly dirty hands from all the mining yk and so would hold the handle bit so as not to get the part they eat dirty and then so that they didn’t have to carry too much half of it would be savoury and the other half sweet (ive never actually seen a sweet pasty so idk how true this is but still). i could also talk abt the mines for ages they’re so cool and tragic but imma leave that there bc i wanna talk abt tom bawcocks eve
i don’t actually know how true it is obviously but tom bawcocks eve is basically a celebration each year in a village in the south west of cornwall called mousehole where they light these lights and eat stargazy pie which is basically a fish pie to put it simply. it originated from when there was a famine in im guessing probably around the start of the 20th century? but don’t quote me on that, due to a rly big storm which meant they couldn’t go fishing, fish being a staple of their diet, as well as it ruining crops etc.. this guy called tom bawcock then risked it and went out in the storm to go fishing, and so saved the village bc he got them food.
a lot of my knowledge of it comes from a children’s book by antonia barber lmao called the mousehole cat but i’m also pretty sure that there’s some truth to this. there’s also a folk song about it which is cool
this is stargazy pie and the mousehole lights btw:
(i’ve never actually been to mousehole on tom bawcocks eve bc it’s the 23rd december but ive seen the lights most years at new years and i kid you not i have listened to the mousehole cat on cd every night to get to sleep since i was like 6 i cannot get to sleep without it)
if anyone sees this and sees any inaccuracies PLEASE tell me this is me picking up tidbits of information throughout my life and stitching them together so it’s likely i’ve got something wrong although it’s niche enough that no one will hopefully notice lmao
#ok so i may have rambled a bit#i’m kinda sad tho bc i won’t go there for like 2 months#so you got me at quite a wistful time#but again thank you thank you#there are so many more aspects i could talk abt lmao but i love these the most sooo

i was having a bit of a moment thinking about weird family quirks so
no one else i know sings that silly little song
whenever they see the sea,
but when i was little my family and i
would belt into the ocean, ‘bom bom bom’
i remember dancing round my kitchen
it was 4.30am, i was only 7
my mum and dad held my hands and we sang
r-e-s-c-u-e rescue aid society
now we don’t sing so much, but i still remember the songs
the swedish jazz, tom bawcocks eve, willy fog
and so, whilst busy doing chores or other work
you can hear the faint humming of ‘oo de lally oo de lally golly what a day’

10 fun facts about pies
pie is an ancient dish that was invented by the romans - They gave us roads and running water and the Romans are also credited with giving us pie – the first example of a meat filling enclosed in a basic pastry made of flour and oil can be traced back to ancient Rome.
pie crust was used as Tupperware before being used for something else - The crusty top/lid of a pie actually served to preserve the food as a sort of container – in fact the shells were tough and basically inedible but they served well as a sort of utensil to eat the filling before being discarded.
The theatre of pie - Medieval chefs were often tasked with outdoing one another for their masters entertainment. Birds are said to have flown out of pies and it’s even rumoured that dwarves came out of pies at feasts.
Fruit pies and the Tudor connection - Called ‘pyes’ in medieval England and filled with meat, fruit pies first appeared in the 1500s, but British tradition says that the first cherry pie was served to Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th century.
Mince pies were once banned - Legend has it that in the 17th century Oliver Cromwell (Lord Protector of the Commonwealth) banned eating mince pies at Christmas as he saw it as a sign of gluttony. Luckily the ban didn’t last long and we are able to enjoy the delicious pies once more.
To eat humble pie - ‘humble pie’, a pie made from the innards of deer, was said to be a dish for the lower classes as venison was reserved for the wealthy. But while it might be fun to put ‘humble’ and ‘humble’ together, there’s no real evidence to link this saying with the dish.
The Cornish delicacy that features fish that stare at you - Stargazy pie involves baking seven types of fish, including herring and mackerel, and a filling of eggs, potatoes and thickened milk. Whole pilchards are then arranged so their heads (and sometimes tails) emerge from a shortcrust pastry topping. The pie is traditionally cooked in the fishing village of Mouse hole on 23 December to celebrate Tom Bawcock’s Eve, a day commemorating the heroic 16th-century fisherman who braved winter storms in his boat to ensure the locals didn’t go hungry over Christmas.
Jellied Eels is a popular pie accompaniment in East London - In London, pie shops often sell jellied eels –a classic Cockney dish of native British eels, boiled and then cooled – as an accompaniment to pie.
‘Death by pie’ has been cemented in literary legend - Shakespeare killed off two characters in Titus Andronicus by baking them into a pie, and Sweeney Todd, the fictional Victorian character who ran a London barber shop, disposed of his victims by baking them into pies.
Pies pop-up in many a nursery rhyme - Four and twenty blackbirds were baked in a pie in ‘Sing a Song of Sixpence’, Simple Simon met a pieman in his eponymous rhyme and even Little Jack Horner stuck his thumb into a pie.

Day 357: 23rd December - Tom Bawcock's Eve. Craig had his last two Christmas shows at the Acorn in Penzance yesterday and the Minack is closed until the 27th, so we're all on holiday! Thus a ton of washing was done and on the line. I love seeing St Michael's Mount lit up from the back garden - today it was on a loop of various colours. So tiny in the photo, but it was pretty in real life.

Now on: Cubari and Mangadex
Thank you for waiting! It has been a trip settling back in my old room (and house) after such a long time, so thank you as always for your patience (^^;
Edit: The canon refs post has also been updated up to Ch72!
Author hiatus
Although V18 and the 221B character profiles will be released on 4 August (JST), there is no new chapter this month as the authors are taking a break — Ch73 will be released in September instead.
A trip to Cornwall
I had the opportunity to visit Cornwall back in July: specifically the tiny village of Mousehole, where *drumrolls* stargazy pie is said to have been invented! More on that under the cut:
Mousehole Harbour. The village is said to be named after the little harbour entrance, almost like a mousehole when viewed from the sea.
Stargazy pie is served for free on Tom Bawcock’s Eve (23 December) every year at The Ship Inn. But it’s only ever served then, so I didn’t get a chance to try it (-ω-、)
Legend has it that there was once a terribly stormy winter; the fishing boats were unable to leave the harbour, and the villagers were facing starvation as Christmas approached. The day before Christmas Eve, Tom Bawcock braved the storm and managed to catch enough fish to feed the entire village — and this feat was celebrated by baking the fish into stargazy pie ✨ (More about the tale on Wikipedia)
The story is also retold in the wonderfully-illustrated children’s book The Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber 💖 Managed to snag a copy from this delightful bookstore in Penzance:
The Edge of the World Bookshop, along Market Jew Street in Penzance. The lady at the counter was really nice, and there are little cards with personal book recommendations from the store employees, which are spot-on: I especially enjoyed The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex 💕
Aside: If you're wondering how stargazy pie is related to Yuumori, it was mentioned in the Volume 2 omake (Mangadex) that William loves Louis's stargazy pie (๑˃ᴗ˂)

Yes I looked up stargazy pie because I saw it in a meme making fun of British cuisine but listen. It has artistic merit 🤔
The dish is traditionally held to have originated from the village of Mousehole in Cornwall and is traditionally eaten during the festival of Tom Bawcock’s Eve to celebrate his heroic catch during a very stormy winter. According to the modern festival, which is combined with the Mousehole village illuminations, the entire catch was baked into a huge stargazy pie, encompassing seven types of fish and saving the village from starvation. A merrier place you may believe Was Mousehole on Tom Bawcock's eve To be there then who wouldn't wish To sup on seven sorts of fish When murgy broth had cleared the path Comed lances for a fry And then us had a bit o' scad And starry gazey pie Next comed fair maids, bra' thrusty jades As made our oozles dry And ling and hake, enough to make A running shark to sigh As each we'd clunk as health were drunk In bumpers brimming high And when up came Tom Bawcock's name We praised him to the sky.
Merry Tom Bawcock’s eve everyone. A celebration about a fisherman saving everyone from starvation feels like it has special significance this year.

A Cornish Christmas. December 23rd isn’t just the day before Christmas Eve in Mousehole …. it’s Tom Bawcock’s Eve.
Tom was a local fisherman who braved a winter storm to break a famine after bad weather had kept the fishing fleet in harbour for weeks.
~ "Then at last one evening, as old Tom sat with his cat Mowzer on his knee, she felt him take a deep sigh. “Mowzer, my handsome,” he said, for he was a courteous and well spoken man, “Mowzer, my handsome, it will soon be Christmas, and no man can stand by at Christmas and see the children starve. Someone must go fishing come what may, and I think it must be me. It cannot be the young men, for they have wives and children and mothers to weep for them if they do not return. But my wife and parents are dead long since and my children are grown and gone.” Mowzer purred to tell him that she understood, for it was the same with her. “I shall go out tomorrow, Mowzer, my handsome,” said the old man, “and I shall not come back without a catch.” Mowzer purred louder to tell him that she would go with him. For he was only a man, she thought, and men were like mice in the paws of the Great Storm-Cat."
~ extract from the Mousehole Cat by Antonia Barber & Nicola Bayley.
Tom Bawcock's act of heroism is commemorated annually and the story is re-enacted in the harbour; the streets are illuminated with the famous harbour lights, there is a lantern parade and the special local delicacy called star-gazy pie is served. The Ship Inn is the place to eat the pie – you’ll also hear the special song about Tom’s brave act.
"Merry place you may believe, tiz Mowzel 'pon Tom Bawcock's eve.
To be there then who wouldn't wesh, to sup o' seb'm soorts o' fish.
When morgy brawth had cleared the path, Comed lances for a fry,
And then us 'ad a bit o' scad an' Starry-gazy pie.
As aich we'd clunk, 'is health we drunk, in bumpers bremmen high,
And when up caame Tom Bawcock's name, we'd prais'd 'un to the sky."
