Olympic Boxing: Youth Olympic cheer for GB
Great Britain’s boxing medal record has been very good at the three summers Youth Olympic held so far, with three golds and three bronze leaving them behind Cuba and Russia. The inaugural Games were held in Singapore in 2010 and GB had one male boxer qualify for the event in Welsh bantamweight Zack Davies, who lost in the third-place bout to Poland’s Dawid Michelus 12-7.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
Unlike the regular Olympic, only one bronze medal is awarded at the Youth Games, but it was a very creditable performance from Davies. The 2014 Games in Nanjing meant China became the first country to stage both the regular Olympic (Beijing 2008) and Youth Olympic. GB had three male boxers who had qualified and two delivered bronze medals, although Hackney’s Viddal Riley missed out.
The under-81kg division as he lost out a split decision 2-1 to Armenia’s Narek Manasyan in the third-place bout. Nonetheless, it was again a very good performance from our local man and, in the under-52kg category, Muhammad Ali (how could he not succeed with a name like that?) secured a bronze medal after losing his semi-final to Shakur Stevenson, the eventual gold medalist from the USA. Ali, he bounced back to win the third-place contest by clearly outpointing India’s Gaurav Solanki to cement a fine tournament overall.
Peter McGrail also won bronze in the under-56kg class, after losing his semi-final encounter with Cuba’s eventual gold medalist Javier Ibanez Diaz. McGrail regrouped to outpoint Algeria’s Tamma Salem in their third-place bout to seal another fine display in this very tough and competitive tournament. At Buenos Aires in 2018, GB had outstanding success in the ring, with no fewer than three gold medals and a bronze for good measure.
GB won its first-ever gold medal in these Games through Ivan Hope Price with a first-round stoppage of Thailand’s Sarawut Sukthet in the final of their under-52kg encounter. Not to be outdone, Slovakian-born Karol Itauma won GB’s second gold medal with a 4-1 points success over Russia’s Ruslan Kolesnikov and a bronze medal went to Hassan Azim at under-64kg. Although outpointed in his semi-final by the eventual Olympic champion from Russia Ilya Popov, Azim regrouped to stop Morocco’s Mohammed Boulaoja in the third-place bout.
For the first time at these Games, GB fielded a female boxer in the form of Londoner Caroline Dubois in the 60kg division. Older brother Daniel is already a multi-titled professional champion and tipped by many pundits as a future world heavyweight champion. Caroline won her three bouts in Buenos Aires with identical 5-0 scores, including her final triumph over Thailand’s Porntip Buapa to become the first British female boxer to both enter and then win a gold medal at the event.
She remains undefeated with a 40-0 record and, besides her Youth Olympic success, has also won three European Junior Championships, a World Youth Championship, a European Youth Championship, and two English National Youth Championships.
Caroline in her first bout as a senior in the lightweight division outpointed Ala Staradub of Belarus in her opening bout at the Tokyo Olympic Qualifying tournament at the Copper Box Arena last month. The event was then curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic before she could meet Finland’s Mira Potkonen in her next qualifying contest.
But it should be noted that Potkonen derailed reigning Olympic lightweight champion, Katie Taylor, in Rio in 2016, when the Irishwoman was hoping to defend her the crown she had won at the London 2012 Games. We await further details of how and when this qualifying tournament will re-commence, given that the Tokyo Olympic have been postponed until the summer of 2021.

Olympic 2020 Tickets: Kenyan boxing coach thanks NOC for support on road to Tokyo Olympic
Kenyan boxing head coach Musa Benjamin has thanked the country's National Olympic Committee for their financial support on the road to Tokyo Olympic.
Fans from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing fans can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively at reduced prices.
Two Kenyan boxers have already booked their places at this year's rearranged Games through last year's African qualifier in Senegal - Nick Okoth in the men's featherweight and Christine Ongare in the women's flyweight.
The team was known as the "hit squad" is hoping more will qualify through the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Paris, which was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now tentatively planned for June. Benjamin said the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) had been with the team every step of the way.
"NOCK has walked with us all through," he said to Citizen Digital.
They gave us the strength and conditioning coach that is in camp, for now, the nutritionist was also availed by them together with a psychologist. They gave us ring boots and other practicing materials which will help us a lot.
"The players are very happy because these materials are not cheap.
We thank NOCK so much for boosting our efforts in trying to send more boxers to the Olympics in Tokyo. Kenya's team is currently training in capital city Nairobi. Boxing is the only sport the country has won an Olympic medal in outside the traditional Kenyan specialty of athletics and in particular long-distance running.
The country's boxers have made the podium seven times, including gold for welterweight Robert Wangila at Seoul 1988. Benjamin's comments will be a boost for the NOCK which endured a turbulent build-up to the Rio 2016 Summer Games.
Several top officials ended up in court after claims money meant for Kenyan athletes in Brazil was misused, with missing kit among the allegations. Earlier this month, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) held a continental forum online and in Nairobi. New AIBA President Umar Kremlev attended the event in the capital in person.

Olympic Boxing: McCracken Does Not Expect British Boxers to Turn Backs on Tokyo Olympic
Rob McCracken says that he does not expect any Great Britain boxers to turn their back on the Olympic 2020 Games to turn professional. The Tokyo Olympic had been due to start in July, but the coronavirus pandemic has seen it put back until July 2021.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
Several boxers including gold medal hope Pat McCormack and Peter McGrail had planned to turn professional straight after the Tokyo Games. But the decision to move the Olympic back 12 months has meant them having to weigh up the benefit of boxing in Summer Games against getting started on their professional journey.
In reality, it should not be a tough decision. In the UK, boxers in the podium squad can receive funding of up to £30,000 depending on their medal record, while anyone turning professional now would not have any idea of when they would be able to box and earn money, while they will also be entering a very crowded market place, with all professional boxers presently not earning.
And while professionals are allowed to compete now at the Tokyo Olympic, it seems unimaginable that a boxer would just leave the GB program to box professionally only to return next year. McCracken, the GB performance director, is currently having talks with all the members of the squad to map out plans for the next few weeks and months, while their base in Sheffield is closed down.
You’d have thought [they will all stay in the Olympic program. I am speaking to all the boxers at the minute but hopefully, we will be OK. There are no tournament schedules right now, we are in the same boat as other countries.
“The ones who have qualified have qualified, but it might not be all the same boxers at the tournament, it might be a year away, we just don’t know,” McCracken said.
So far two British boxers, McGrail, the featherweight, and Galal Yafai, the flyweight, have qualified for Tokyo and they are assured of their place. Both effectively moved up in weight when the divisions were restructured last year, so neither have any worries about outgrowing their divisions. The European qualifying tournament in London was suspended after three days, with the plan to restart it whenever it proves possible.
With the Games being pushed back 12 months, it seems likely that some of the same boxers may not be there for the rearranged tournament, leading to the possibility of either a string of walkovers or the organizers allowing substitutes. It seems unlikely that every single boxer will be there at the same weight. If they start again as Day 4, it could be they might just keep the countries the same and allow them to pick who they want.

The Local Organizing Committee of the Boxing Road to Olympic 2020 occasion comprehends the explanations behind the choice and apologizes to ticket holders for any bother this may cause. Fighters are going after an aggregate of 77 spots at the Tokyo Olympic over the different capability occasions - 50 are accessible for men with 27 for ladies.

Olympic Basketball: America Dominates but What About ‘3x3’ for Olympic 2020
The applicants for the American Men’s Olympic 2020 team for three-on-three basketball comprise an investment banker, a social worker and a podcaster. There are previous college players from Princeton and Florida Southern, many of them following something like the apparently outdated unethical model of 50 years before to right Olympic 2020 magnificence in an event that will make its entrance at the Games this year.

Then there are the candidates for the American women’s team sufficiently of W.N.B.A. players, including Kelsey Plum, 2017 No.1 overall drawn from the top pick. Whether the International Olympic Committee meant to or not, the advent of the event being mentioned as “3x3” at the Games has created an attractive talent hole between the pools of players U.S.A. Basketball will select from Monday to contribute to the event.
It exists partly because of the nature of the qualifying system but also because of the calendar. N.B.A. players have been a little busy during the fall and winter qualifying period. It also says something about the way the game differs for the genders in the United States and around the world.
The U.S.A. Basketball is not in a site to just name LeBron James, Damian Lillard and Jimmy Butler to the men’s team and be done with it. The rules of Olympic “3x3” order that players on the team have made points in events that took place over the previous few months.
The chance was there to employ some good women’s players, whose W.N.B.A. season takes place in the summer. Not so for N.B.A. players, and even the 100s of American men making a living playing basketball in Europe and China. That leaves applicants like Dominique Jones, 31, who played at Division II Fort Hays State; Canyon Barry, 26, a Florida star now in the G League; and three Princeton alums.
In contrast, many of the female candidates, although mostly not W.N.B.A. stars, are playing at the highest level of their sport. Besides Plum, Napheesa Collier was an All-Star last season as a beginner and Layshia Clarendon is an eight-year W.N.B.A. vet and 2017 All-Star selection. Some of the players in the women’s three-on-three pool like the two-time W.N.B.A. All-Star Stefanie Dolson are also applicants for the more signaled five-on-five team.

Olympic Boxing: Kenyan Boxers have Tokyo Olympic Hope
This week, Kenyan boxers will take the first step towards qualifying for the Olympic 2020 Games when they compete in the African qualifiers in Senegal. A tough struggle is projected, what with a reduced quota for Africa at the quadrennial Games this year. Just three boxers in each of the six categories will qualify for the Tokyo Olympic alongside two each from heavyweight and super heavyweight categories.
The 13-man contingent will also be aiming to redeem the country’s image in boxing. In 1988, the ‘Hit Squad’ made history in Seoul, South Korea, when welterweight Robert Wangila became the first African to win the Olympic boxing gold.
Chris Sande also returned home with the middleweight bronze medal. Kenya has since not won an Olympic boxing medal. The three Kenyan boxers in 2016 Olympic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, returned home empty-handed.
The current team boasts experienced boxers, welterweight Rayton Okwiri and flyweight Shaffi Bakari, having won silver medals at 2019 African Games in Morocco. Okwiri also represented Kenya at the Rio Olympic. The Kenya boxing team’s month-long preparations for the African contestants in Nairobi was tracked by a high-altitude camp in Nanyuki.
“We have trained well for the past month. Now those who will get the chance to make the team to Senegal must endeavor to make Kenya satisfied and ensure as boxers, we fly the Kenyan flag high in Tokyo,” the team captains said.
Under veteran coach Musa Benjamin, Kenya has a good chance of sending more boxers to the Tokyo Olympic. The squad must build on improvements made at the 2019 African Games, where Kenya won five medals.

All of the boxers in the squad are pleased about it and really excited at the prospect of competing in London. GB Boxing performance director Rob McCracken, who oversaw the five medals for Great Britain at London 2012 and three in Rio 2016, is hopeful home support will spur on the 13 British fighters.
"Our boxers had a very good year in 2019 when the men and women won 16 medals at four major competitions, so they are coming into 2020 in a good run of form," he supposed.
The qualifier will be very tough, as a lot of the European nations are strong in boxing, so it is good that it is taking place in this country. The IOC boxing task force confirmed the location of the five Olympic boxing qualifiers last August.
The task force was established after the IOC suspended the recognition of AIBA in June, following a six-month investigation into the world governing body amid concerns regarding its governance, finances, refereeing, and judging.

Olympic Boxing: Olympic boxer reveals you CAN get a dream body without the gym taking over your life
With Christmas on the horizon, right now getting in shape may well be the last thing on your mind. But if you're already planning on hitting the gym big time in January, Olympic boxer Luke Campbell is on hand to offer you his top tips for getting in shape.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympics Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
The father-of-two, who has two sons with his wife Lynsey Karen, won gold at the 2008 European Championships and at the London 2012 Olympics and is currently ranked the world's fifth-best active lightweight by The Ring. And judging by his incredible physique, he certainly knows a thing or two about how to look after your body.
1. GO VEGAN
By adopting a vegan lifestyle, I have noticed a huge boost in my energy levels. It is something I do when training for a fight and I have noticed it helps reduce any injury time. Plant-based foods post-workout are essential, as you are feeding your body with all of the nutrients you need.
After a morning work-out, a fruit smoothie followed by a variety of nuts including Brazil nuts, almond nuts, and walnuts is ideal. It is important to not overload on natural sugars - the nuts will help counterbalance them. A lot of top athletes have switched to plant-based diets for health benefits.
2. DON'T BE AFRAID TO LIFT WEIGHTS
It is a familiar picture in any gym – the usual suspects hogging the weights and weight machines. As a boxer, I need to train more than the average person, but we should all be aware that as we age, our body muscles deplete – even someone who is still quite active will experience some muscle loss.
Make sure you are not putting stress on your back or joints, and lighter weights with more reps will give you a nice lean, toned look if you are dedicated. Even if you don't see much physical difference, it is important to work on your muscle groups as your body will be thankful later in life.
3. FEEL THE BURN
Most people who start feeling the burn when they are doing sit-ups, stop. This is the opposite of what you should be doing!
When you feel your core muscles burning, this is a good sign as it means you have activated them. Push yourself to do more reps and every week add on another 30 seconds to reap the benefits.
4. ENJOY A CHEAT DAY
Life in constant training mode can get pretty tiresome – even if, like me, you have built a career around training hard. To keep on goal and motivated, it is key to enjoy yourself and eat some treats. I love a bit of chocolate at the weekend. Then comes Monday I am back into training mode.
5. SET YOUR BEDTIME
Sleep is key to mood and energy levels. I'd recommend eight hours’ minimum a night, but some people need more. The best time to go to sleep at night is generally just before 10pm. The reason for this is that from 10pm until 2am, our body goes into a deep sleep, which is very important for its recovery, where our muscles and brain get some real rest and time to revitalize.
You will be more up for training and have the energy to push yourself in your workout if you get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation only leads to craving sugar and junk food, which may give you a brief boost, but you'll experience an even lower slump as your blood sugar levels start to decrease again.
6. WORKOUT MID-WEEK AND REST AT WEEKENDS
Be disciplined with your work-out routine. My top tip would be to train in the week and then let your body recover at the weekend. Exercise should not be mundane, so if you are finding it hard to get to the gym in the first place, stick to a schedule – work out three to four times mid-week and take the weekends off.
Enjoy yourself and spend time with friends and family. I think most people feel the weekend would be a better time to go as you have more time, but I disagree - give your body a well-deserved rest
7. MAKE MEALTIMES FUN
Do not grab a protein bar after the gym – they are full of sugar, preservatives and so high in fat. As we are time poor it is so easy to pick up a processed packet meal, but generally, these are so bad for you. My tip would be to learn to enjoy the kitchen and make dinnertime fun.
Use this time as 'sociable time' if possible. It takes 20 minutes to cook salmon, whole-wheat pasta and vegetables – which is a very healthy and balanced meal.
8. TAKE UP BOXING
You can burn up to 800 calories an hour by boxing! Do this even once a week and you will notice a huge difference. Boxing is the best sport you can do for shedding weight. There are lots of group classes you can join, such as ladies-only kickboxing, and some professional boxing gyms now also cater for after-work classes for all ages.
Weight-loss aside, boxing is also fantastic for self-discipline and boosting your confidence.
9. ONLY EAT CARBS AFTER A WORKOUT
Slightly switching up your eating patterns can make a difference. You don't need to deprive your body of certain foods, but just be mindful of when you eat them.
For instance, when your body's metabolism is boosted after a work-out, it is the perfect time to eat carbs as your body will continue to burn calories for a few hours afterward.
10. DITCH THE SCALES
With boxing it is important I make a certain weight pre-fight, but my advice to anyone not in my shoes would be to ditch the scales completely. Weight-loss and toning up is a slow process, so looking at the scales will be counterproductive and make you feel worse.
It is better to chart your progress by taking weekly progress pictures. Take them in the same position and spot so you can compare easily. This is a great tip for keeping on goal and motivated!

Transparent Scoring for Olympic Boxing in Olympic 2020
In a bid to restore trust in the scoring of boxing matches at the Olympics, scores will be displayed at the end of each round. That’s the biggest change proposed for the tournament in Tokyo by the IOC, which took over control in June when it suspended the international federation AIBA. The rules were released Wednesday by the IOC.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympics Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
Suspension of AIBA came after more than three years of problems at the federation. At the 2016 Olympics, all 36 referees and judges were dismissed over concerns about match-fixing. Organizationally, AIBA has endured four changes in the presidency in three years. Now it teeters on the verge of bankruptcy due to debt encumbered to salvage AIBA’s now-defunct professional league. In place of AIBA, an IOC-organized task force is supervising the Olympic boxing, led by IOC member Morinari Watanabe. He’s also president of the International Gymnastics Federation. “The main objective of the IOC Boxing Task Force is to ensure the completion of the mission of delivering events, while putting the boxers first, and with transparent and credible sporting results and fair play” says Watanabe.
He says that while amendments are being made to the AIBA rules, he also says care was taken not to make drastic changes with the Olympics looming.
“It is only fair to the boxers not to change the fundamental competition rules so close to the Olympic qualifiers and the Olympic competition in Tokyo. The IOC Boxing Task Force has therefore focused on the full review of the rules enforced by AIBA in the current year of 2019, limiting changes that impact boxers while increasing transparency by displaying the scoring and in the selection process for referees and judges,” Watanabe says.
Special attention has been paid to how referees and judges will be selected for Tokyo. No referees who participated in Rio are permitted to be selected for Tokyo. Also excluded are any current members of the AIBA Executive Committee as well as presidents and secretary’s general of national federations. Any member of the AIBA executive in the past three years is also barred from Tokyo. The change in the rules on scoring comes with the blessings of a group of Athlete Ambassadors named by the IOC to provide their advice on repairing Olympic boxing.
The unprecedented action of the IOC to suspend an international federation before the Games has prompted extra measures to serve boxers hoping to compete in Tokyo. The IOC website for athletes includes a dedicated page for boxing “In Your Corner” that explains the process underway. A brief video includes encouraging words from boxers Wladimir Klitschko and Mary Kom.
