Olympic Basketball: America Dominates but What About ‘3x3’ for Olympic 2020
The applicants for the American Men’s Olympic 2020 team for three-on-three basketball comprise an investment banker, a social worker and a podcaster. There are previous college players from Princeton and Florida Southern, many of them following something like the apparently outdated unethical model of 50 years before to right Olympic 2020 magnificence in an event that will make its entrance at the Games this year.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympics Modern Pentathlon lovers can book Olympic Basketball Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
Tumblr media
Then there are the candidates for the American women’s team sufficiently of W.N.B.A. players, including Kelsey Plum, 2017 No.1 overall drawn from the top pick. Whether the International Olympic Committee meant to or not, the advent of the event being mentioned as “3x3” at the Games has created an attractive talent hole between the pools of players U.S.A. Basketball will select from Monday to contribute to the event.
It exists partly because of the nature of the qualifying system but also because of the calendar. N.B.A. players have been a little busy during the fall and winter qualifying period. It also says something about the way the game differs for the genders in the United States and around the world.
Tumblr media
The U.S.A. Basketball is not in a site to just name LeBron James, Damian Lillard and Jimmy Butler to the men’s team and be done with it. The rules of Olympic “3x3” order that players on the team have made points in events that took place over the previous few months.
The chance was there to employ some good women’s players, whose W.N.B.A. season takes place in the summer. Not so for N.B.A. players, and even the 100s of American men making a living playing basketball in Europe and China. That leaves applicants like Dominique Jones, 31, who played at Division II Fort Hays State; Canyon Barry, 26, a Florida star now in the G League; and three Princeton alums.
Tumblr media
In contrast, many of the female candidates, although mostly not W.N.B.A. stars, are playing at the highest level of their sport. Besides Plum, Napheesa Collier was an All-Star last season as a beginner and Layshia Clarendon is an eight-year W.N.B.A. vet and 2017 All-Star selection. Some of the players in the women’s three-on-three pool like the two-time W.N.B.A. All-Star Stefanie Dolson are also applicants for the more signaled five-on-five team.

Olympic 2020 Tickets: Kenyan boxing coach thanks NOC for support on road to Tokyo Olympic
Kenyan boxing head coach Musa Benjamin has thanked the country's National Olympic Committee for their financial support on the road to Tokyo Olympic.
Fans from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing fans can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively at reduced prices.
Tumblr media
Two Kenyan boxers have already booked their places at this year's rearranged Games through last year's African qualifier in Senegal - Nick Okoth in the men's featherweight and Christine Ongare in the women's flyweight.
The team was known as the "hit squad" is hoping more will qualify through the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Paris, which was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is now tentatively planned for June. Benjamin said the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) had been with the team every step of the way.
"NOCK has walked with us all through," he said to Citizen Digital.
They gave us the strength and conditioning coach that is in camp, for now, the nutritionist was also availed by them together with a psychologist. They gave us ring boots and other practicing materials which will help us a lot.
"The players are very happy because these materials are not cheap.
We thank NOCK so much for boosting our efforts in trying to send more boxers to the Olympics in Tokyo. Kenya's team is currently training in capital city Nairobi. Boxing is the only sport the country has won an Olympic medal in outside the traditional Kenyan specialty of athletics and in particular long-distance running.
Tumblr media
The country's boxers have made the podium seven times, including gold for welterweight Robert Wangila at Seoul 1988. Benjamin's comments will be a boost for the NOCK which endured a turbulent build-up to the Rio 2016 Summer Games.
Several top officials ended up in court after claims money meant for Kenyan athletes in Brazil was misused, with missing kit among the allegations. Earlier this month, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) held a continental forum online and in Nairobi. New AIBA President Umar Kremlev attended the event in the capital in person.

Olympic Boxing: Kenyan Boxers have Tokyo Olympic Hope
This week, Kenyan boxers will take the first step towards qualifying for the Olympic 2020 Games when they compete in the African qualifiers in Senegal. When they take to the ring in Dakar on Thursday, the five women and eight men will be fighting for 37 slots reserved for the continent in Tokyo Olympic.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing fans can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
A tough struggle is projected, what with a reduced quota for Africa at the quadrennial Games this year. Just three boxers in each of the six categories will qualify for the Tokyo Olympic alongside two each from heavyweight and super heavyweight categories.
Tumblr media
The 13-man contingent will also be aiming to redeem the country’s image in boxing. In 1988, the ‘Hit Squad’ made history in Seoul, South Korea, when welterweight Robert Wangila became the first African to win the Olympic boxing gold.
Chris Sande also returned home with the middleweight bronze medal. Kenya has since not won an Olympic boxing medal. The three Kenyan boxers in 2016 Olympic in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, returned home empty-handed.
The current team boasts experienced boxers, welterweight Rayton Okwiri and flyweight Shaffi Bakari, having won silver medals at 2019 African Games in Morocco. Okwiri also represented Kenya at the Rio Olympic. The Kenya boxing team’s month-long preparations for the African contestants in Nairobi was tracked by a high-altitude camp in Nanyuki.
Tumblr media
“We have trained well for the past month. Now those who will get the chance to make the team to Senegal must endeavor to make Kenya satisfied and ensure as boxers, we fly the Kenyan flag high in Tokyo,” the team captains said.
Under veteran coach Musa Benjamin, Kenya has a good chance of sending more boxers to the Tokyo Olympic. The squad must build on improvements made at the 2019 African Games, where Kenya won five medals.

Olympic Boxing: Olympic boxer reveals you CAN get a dream body without the gym taking over your life
With Christmas on the horizon, right now getting in shape may well be the last thing on your mind. But if you're already planning on hitting the gym big time in January, Olympic boxer Luke Campbell is on hand to offer you his top tips for getting in shape.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympics Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
The father-of-two, who has two sons with his wife Lynsey Karen, won gold at the 2008 European Championships and at the London 2012 Olympics and is currently ranked the world's fifth-best active lightweight by The Ring. And judging by his incredible physique, he certainly knows a thing or two about how to look after your body.
Tumblr media
1. GO VEGAN
By adopting a vegan lifestyle, I have noticed a huge boost in my energy levels. It is something I do when training for a fight and I have noticed it helps reduce any injury time.  Plant-based foods post-workout are essential, as you are feeding your body with all of the nutrients you need.
After a morning work-out, a fruit smoothie followed by a variety of nuts including Brazil nuts, almond nuts, and walnuts is ideal. It is important to not overload on natural sugars - the nuts will help counterbalance them. A lot of top athletes have switched to plant-based diets for health benefits.
2. DON'T BE AFRAID TO LIFT WEIGHTS
It is a familiar picture in any gym – the usual suspects hogging the weights and weight machines.  As a boxer, I need to train more than the average person, but we should all be aware that as we age, our body muscles deplete – even someone who is still quite active will experience some muscle loss.
Make sure you are not putting stress on your back or joints, and lighter weights with more reps will give you a nice lean, toned look if you are dedicated. Even if you don't see much physical difference, it is important to work on your muscle groups as your body will be thankful later in life.
3. FEEL THE BURN
Most people who start feeling the burn when they are doing sit-ups, stop. This is the opposite of what you should be doing!
When you feel your core muscles burning, this is a good sign as it means you have activated them. Push yourself to do more reps and every week add on another 30 seconds to reap the benefits.
4. ENJOY A CHEAT DAY
Life in constant training mode can get pretty tiresome – even if, like me, you have built a career around training hard. To keep on goal and motivated, it is key to enjoy yourself and eat some treats. I love a bit of chocolate at the weekend. Then comes Monday I am back into training mode.
Tumblr media
5. SET YOUR BEDTIME
Sleep is key to mood and energy levels. I'd recommend eight hours’ minimum a night, but some people need more. The best time to go to sleep at night is generally just before 10pm. The reason for this is that from 10pm until 2am, our body goes into a deep sleep, which is very important for its recovery, where our muscles and brain get some real rest and time to revitalize.
You will be more up for training and have the energy to push yourself in your workout if you get enough sleep. Sleep deprivation only leads to craving sugar and junk food, which may give you a brief boost, but you'll experience an even lower slump as your blood sugar levels start to decrease again.
6. WORKOUT MID-WEEK AND REST AT WEEKENDS
Be disciplined with your work-out routine. My top tip would be to train in the week and then let your body recover at the weekend.  Exercise should not be mundane, so if you are finding it hard to get to the gym in the first place, stick to a schedule – work out three to four times mid-week and take the weekends off.
Enjoy yourself and spend time with friends and family. I think most people feel the weekend would be a better time to go as you have more time, but I disagree - give your body a well-deserved rest
Tumblr media
7. MAKE MEALTIMES FUN
Do not grab a protein bar after the gym – they are full of sugar, preservatives and so high in fat. As we are time poor it is so easy to pick up a processed packet meal, but generally, these are so bad for you. My tip would be to learn to enjoy the kitchen and make dinnertime fun.
Use this time as 'sociable time' if possible. It takes 20 minutes to cook salmon, whole-wheat pasta and vegetables – which is a very healthy and balanced meal.
8. TAKE UP BOXING
You can burn up to 800 calories an hour by boxing! Do this even once a week and you will notice a huge difference. Boxing is the best sport you can do for shedding weight. There are lots of group classes you can join, such as ladies-only kickboxing, and some professional boxing gyms now also cater for after-work classes for all ages.
Weight-loss aside, boxing is also fantastic for self-discipline and boosting your confidence.
9. ONLY EAT CARBS AFTER A WORKOUT
Slightly switching up your eating patterns can make a difference. You don't need to deprive your body of certain foods, but just be mindful of when you eat them.
For instance, when your body's metabolism is boosted after a work-out, it is the perfect time to eat carbs as your body will continue to burn calories for a few hours afterward.
Tumblr media
10. DITCH THE SCALES
With boxing it is important I make a certain weight pre-fight, but my advice to anyone not in my shoes would be to ditch the scales completely.  Weight-loss and toning up is a slow process, so looking at the scales will be counterproductive and make you feel worse.
It is better to chart your progress by taking weekly progress pictures. Take them in the same position and spot so you can compare easily. This is a great tip for keeping on goal and motivated!

Transparent Scoring for Olympic Boxing in Olympic 2020
In a bid to restore trust in the scoring of boxing matches at the Olympics, scores will be displayed at the end of each round. That’s the biggest change proposed for the tournament in Tokyo by the IOC, which took over control in June when it suspended the international federation AIBA. The rules were released Wednesday by the IOC.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympics Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
Tumblr media
Suspension of AIBA came after more than three years of problems at the federation. At the 2016 Olympics, all 36 referees and judges were dismissed over concerns about match-fixing. Organizationally, AIBA has endured four changes in the presidency in three years. Now it teeters on the verge of bankruptcy due to debt encumbered to salvage AIBA’s now-defunct professional league. In place of AIBA, an IOC-organized task force is supervising the Olympic boxing, led by IOC member Morinari Watanabe. He’s also president of the International Gymnastics Federation. “The main objective of the IOC Boxing Task Force is to ensure the completion of the mission of delivering events, while putting the boxers first, and with transparent and credible sporting results and fair play” says Watanabe.
Tumblr media
He says that while amendments are being made to the AIBA rules, he also says care was taken not to make drastic changes with the Olympics looming.
“It is only fair to the boxers not to change the fundamental competition rules so close to the Olympic qualifiers and the Olympic competition in Tokyo. The IOC Boxing Task Force has therefore focused on the full review of the rules enforced by AIBA in the current year of 2019, limiting changes that impact boxers while increasing transparency by displaying the scoring and in the selection process for referees and judges,” Watanabe says.
Special attention has been paid to how referees and judges will be selected for Tokyo. No referees who participated in Rio are permitted to be selected for Tokyo. Also excluded are any current members of the AIBA Executive Committee as well as presidents and secretary’s general of national federations. Any member of the AIBA executive in the past three years is also barred from Tokyo. The change in the rules on scoring comes with the blessings of a group of Athlete Ambassadors named by the IOC to provide their advice on repairing Olympic boxing.
Tumblr media
The unprecedented action of the IOC to suspend an international federation before the Games has prompted extra measures to serve boxers hoping to compete in Tokyo. The IOC website for athletes includes a dedicated page for boxing “In Your Corner” that explains the process underway. A brief video includes encouraging words from boxers Wladimir Klitschko and Mary Kom.

Olympic Boxing: Conlan-Nikitin in Rio changed Tokyo Olympic boxing forever
Michael Conlan heard a bad rumor before the Rio Olympic that he was not going to be treated fairly: Conlan heard that he would be robbed. Olympic admirers from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing admirers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
The secret movers and fixers in the Olympic boxing game all seemed to know what would happen, and inside the Irish camp, they did their best to protect Conlan from the news. The Tokyo Olympic village is a hard place to suppress a rumor.
Tumblr media
Conlan was both the reigning World and European champion, a dream double had won a bronze at the London Olympic and was favorite for the gold medal in Rio. The gold was not going to be easy, but Conlan had the form, the experience and the momentum on his side sadly, he had the darkest of ancient amateur boxing conspirators against him, a clandestine gang leftover from boxing's Cold War days.
In the quarterfinal, Conlan met Russian Vladimir Nikitin, who had beaten Conlan before and was certainly not the hopeless boxer some have suggested. Nikitin fought with visible stitches, which looked like staples, on the left side of his skull to close a jagged wound. Conlan sensed as he walked to the ring that something was not quite right -- the referee warned him in the ring about keeping his head up before the first bell had sounded.
"What was that all about?" Conlan asked when we sat down at his little apartment in south London to watch back that infamous fight with Nikitin. "I knew that ref, and she had never said anything like that before."
When we settled down, filling his sofa, Conlan had not watched it "for ages," and I had not seen it since the night of the fight. We pushed play, sat back and suddenly, we were both in Rio in the summer of 2016, Conlan fighting for his life and me as a witness to the unfolding travesty. It was a strange experience, and we found a fight that had played with our memory, a fight that was different in a few ways and, amazingly, a fight that Conlan won even easier.
Tumblr media
The first round is comfortably Conlan's round; the Irish boxer is too fast and too accurate, and Nikitin spends most of the three minutes chasing shadows. Conlan sits down, relaxed, composed on the bell -- then there is news that he is trailing, a boxer and close, a close friend of Conlan called Paddy Barnes gets word to the Irish corner that Nikitin has been given the round. You can see their shock in the fight film.
He knew that all the rumors were true -- he knew deep down that his Olympic journey was over, his boyhood dream gone forever. Conlan has to get involved more in the second, win it even bigger than he had clearly won the first. He did, and it meant it was around each going into the third and final round. There was a place in the semifinal for the winner, a guarantee of a Tokyo Olympic medal.
He said "Look at that, he's hurt. I've hurt him, and then she steps in and warns me, at one point during the second round. What chance did I have? There was no way they were going to let me win, no way."
I think we both thought the third round was scrappy, hard, even close but watching it again, we were both surprised Conlan wins it easier than he won the first round. He is brilliant; Nikitin is beaten. It was a revelation to watch. At the final bell, there is only one winner.
Nikitin gets the verdict and goes to the semifinal, while Conlan is crushed. The rest, as they say, is history. Conlan removes his vest, remains in the ring, tells each of the judges what he thinks of them, shows them his middle finger, leaves the ring in a rage.
The fallout was not gentle. Conlan quit the Olympic 2020 the village that night and continued to abuse the men and women of AIBA, the governing body who ran the sport then, and there was worldwide condemnation of the decision; boxing at the Tokyo Olympic was once again shamed. Conlan did his bit, trust me, for the revolution that followed.
The IOC initiated various investigations after Rio, always citing the Conlan verdict as they led a purge for reform, and AIBA has now been suspended. There will be boxing at the Tokyo Olympic, but nobody who officiated in any capacity in Rio will be on the IOC's selected roster. The sport simply can't survive another Conlan disaster.
Tumblr media
Well, Nikitin was so badly cut and hurt that he had to withdraw from his semifinal against American Shakur Stevenson. Conlan turned professional with Bob Arum, and the pair famously replicated Conlan's signature salute to celebrate signing their contracts. Nikitin turned professional last year. Stevenson won the WBO featherweight world title in his 13th fight two months ago. Conlan and Nikitin fight at Madison Square Garden live on ESPN -- it is the only fight that matters to Conlan. Both are unbeaten.
Conlan said, "I have to beat him, get rid of him and then I can move on,". It is not the Olympic final, but it is a fight Conlan has dreamed about.

Olympic Boxing: Harry Garside Boxing, ballet and breaking stereotypes
Growing up, Tokyo 2020-hopeful boxer Harry Garside was considered the wimp of the family. Now, he is challenging stereotypes and incorporating some unorthodox training methods as he fights towards his first Olympic Games. Olympic admirers from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing admirers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
The youngest of three, Garside was a quirky kid who preferred spending time with his mum rather than roughhousing with his brothers, so it was a shock to everyone when the then 9-year-old decided he wanted to take up boxing. “I’m the youngest of three boys and both of my brothers are very, very tough macho men. I was the opposite growing up,” the Mooroolbark, Victorian said.
Tumblr media
“They would be out the back, digging holes or working with dad in the garage, whereas I was inside dusting or cleaning the house with mum, that was my childhood. I did play a lot of sport growing up, but I was terrified of contact sport, I never wanted to be tackled in football or get hit by a cricket ball so when I wanted to try boxing, the whole family was pretty surprised.” As soon as he stepped into the ring, it was love at first fight. “I fell in love with boxing instantly. The structure, the brutality and the old-fashioned style of training was just very appealing to me,” he said. My first coach made me fall in love with it as well. He made me believe I was going to be a champion. Garside’s coach, Brian Levier has remained by his side from the beginning, instilling faith in the now 22-year-old. But not everyone thought Garside was going to be a champion, in fact, he was considered easy pickings by his competitors.
“Throughout my career, I’d been seen as the easy target,” he said.  I’d never had any success at a national level so everyone really overlooked me and there were a few comments going around like ‘I hope I draw Harry Garside first, he’d be really easy so it would be a good warm-up fight.’ Hearing stuff like that really made me train harder and tighten up the screws. With those comments in the back of my mind, I won my first national championship in 2015.
Tumblr media
Those disparaging, yet driving comments kept Garside motivated, the wins kept coming. Garside is now the six-time National Champion and last year he claimed Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s 60kg division, dedicating his win to coach Levier. Since the Commonwealth Games, Garside has Tokyo Olympic firmly in his sights, utilizing uncomfortableness as his superpower and incorporating unique training methods like ballet, karaoke, and army training into his routine.
“I’ve always been a bit of an unusual person, I’ve always been a little bit different,” Garside shared.
I’m not going to lie, I’d always wanted to try ballet. I say I do it for boxing, but really, I have always wanted to dance. I love that it’s so alike to boxing in the way that it’s quite brutal in the way of the strength and structure that’s required, which is what appeals to me.  The footwork, the coordination, the transference of weight. Although they seem worlds apart, they are so alike.
“I’ve only had two fights since I started ballet, but I can already tell the difference in my leg strength and stability,” he explained.
Along with the physical training, Garside says training the mind is just as important, which is why he has challenged himself to get outside of his comfort zone every month. Over the last year, I’ve been forcing myself to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Every month I do something that pushes me out of my comfort zone, things like no technology, ballet lessons, having really tough conversations, commando training, karaoke… Karaoke was terrible!
Doing these things was a lot harder than I thought but I’ve still got a few things in mind like public reading and stand-up comedy.
“I think putting yourself in these situations translates to the sport, because as athletes, we get put in so many weird and strange situations that are uncomfortable, so the more uncomfortable something makes me feel, the more I want to do it,” he said.
As for his army training, Garside says the biggest takeaway was how similar athletes and soldiers are when it comes to breaking through both mental and physical barriers. The AIS started this awesome initiative called the Gold Medal Ready (GMR) program, which helps Australian athletes familiarize themselves with the pressures of the Olympic environment, Garside explained. About six or seven sports with 50-60 athletes went to Goldsworthy Barracks and the Commando Regiment took us through a two-day course. It was unreal.
Tumblr media
“High-level athletes and soldiers are very, very similar,” Garside said.
Obviously, we are different in that they are fighting for life and death while we are fighting to win or lose, but I think the emotion and the intensity of high-level sport are similar, so I took a lot out of it,” he continued. When he’s not competing, dancing, singing or crawling through trenches, Garside volunteers his time to Reach, a not for profit organization he utilized as a teenager. Reach teaches young people about resilience, breaking down barriers and how to connect with other people.
“I’ve been involved with Reach for five or six years now and I see so much value in it,” he said. I think the youth of today need these skills more than ever. Obviously, suicide rates are so high and there are some big problems facing the youth of Australia. This is a space where they can just be themselves, they’re free of judgment and can really push themselves.
“As a 16-year-old, they helped me to realize my full potential by challenging what I thought was ‘normal’ negative male stereotypes, and I knew growing up I didn’t want to be like that,” Garside shared.
“I grew up in a very male-dominated family, so I felt like I had to be that way and learning that I didn’t, just felt like home to me, so I’ve been involved ever since.”
Anyone who has stepped foot into Garside’s bedroom knows that Tokyo 2020 is his biggest aspiration. I remember sitting up watching the Beijing 2008 Olympics when I was 7 or 8 and my parents would be telling me to go to bed because I had school in the morning, but I was just glued to the screen.
My room is just covered with photos of Australian athletes and having those photos, quotes, and memorabilia helps train my subconscious. I wake up every day and see a Tokyo 2020 medal, Tokyo posters and an accountability mirror that I have written on.
“Seeing it there every morning, it just drives me each day to train my absolute butt off. My attitude is to wake up every day and be better than I was yesterday and I want to get that gold medal in Tokyo, not just for me but for my country, he continued. I’m so patriotic and I love this country so dearly. I feel so lucky to live in Australia, wearing green and gold means everything to me.”
Garside has recently moved one step closer to fulfilling his Olympic dream after winning his weight division at the national pre-selection trials for the Tokyo 2020 Asia-Oceania Qualification Tournament, to be held in April next year.

Olympic Boxing officials from Rio 2016 to be banned from Olympic 2020
Nobody of the 36 referees and judges used at the Rio 2016 boxing rivalry will be allowed to preside at Tokyo Olympic, an International Olympic Committee task force has supposed. Olympic admirers from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing admirers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
Numerous judges and referees were sent home from Rio after a number of dubious decisions during the boxing tournament. At Tokyo Olympic, referees and judges will be picked from a pool of International Boxing Association (AIBA) certified officials, who have been reviewed to ensure they meet the criteria.
Tumblr media
The key objective of the IOC boxing task force is to safeguard the completion of the mission of delivering events, while putting the boxers first, and with see-through and credible generous results and fair play," said boxing task force chair Morinari Watanabe.
An examination by the AIBA in 2017 found no interference in results and recommended that the Rio judges be reintegrated on a "case-by-case basis", but the IOC's new selection criteria have now ruled them ineligible for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The task force said its decision followed discussions with athletes to increase clarity, transparency, and integrity in the selection process and officiating at the Olympics. Scores from all judges at the end of each round will also now be displayed publicly during qualifying competitions and the Games.
Irish bantamweight Michael Conlan, who supposed he was "robbed", and Kazakhstan's Vassiliy Levit lost bouts in which they both seemed to win comfortably during Rio 2016.
The bad verdict among many - analysis
The atmosphere before Conlan was toxic - the night before his bout the decision in the heavyweight final was bad. Russian Evgeny Tishchenko took that gold medal when he was awarded the verdict against Kazakhstan's Levit. Conlan even acknowledges that the result in that final was dreadful, certainly as bad as his. After the first round of Conlan, when the shocking score was in, there was a growing ripple of discontent and disbelief inside the arena.
Tumblr media
Some of the Irish boxers had the score, they got it to the angle. There was a shock - people saw then that something bad was happening. It was the validation of all the rumors that had been circulating. People in the radio and television media sections were removing their headsets, covering their microphones and shouting to each other things like: 'Have they got the corners varied up?' Nobody could trust it.
Contentious scoring decisions have contained in Olympic bouts in the past, notably when American Roy Jones Jr lost a 3-2 decision to South Korean fighter Park Si-hun at the 1988 Olympic Games. Great Britain's Savannah Marshall lost out to Dutch fighter Nouchka Fontijn. One judge - Colombian Armando Carbonell - was one of those involved with the controversial Tishchenko heavyweight wins and gave Fontijn all four rounds.
Elsewhere, American Gary Antuanne Russell also lost a light-welterweight quarter-final to Uzbekistan's Fazliddin Gaibnazarov. When judges were sent home from the Games, Russell's mother said: "It doesn't change anything. It doesn't change the decision. It means nothing to us."
The IOC boxing taskforce said its decision not to use Rio 2016 judges in Tokyo was just one of a number of "measures aimed at increasing clarity, transparency, and integrity". In a 115-page document it listed its regulations for boxing at the Games and clarified the factors considered when scoring about.
The number and quality of blows will be considered, as well a fighter's ability to dominate a contest through "technical and tactical superiority. The task force will also evaluate "competitiveness", which it states takes into account which boxer is "consistently trying to win through the entire bout.
Tumblr media
Rounds can be scored 10-9 if judged to be "close", 10-8 if there is a "clear winner" and 10-7 if there is "total dominance". It made clear around can still be judged as 10-9 and close even if a fighter faces a standing eight-count or is knocked down. Rounds, where
neither fighter is knocked down or faces a standing count, can still be scored 10-8 or 10-7 if needed.
"It is often overlooked but Conlan won the third, I thought he won it clear. But, the verdict appears to have been sorted. There is an amazing picture at the end when the result is announced: Conlan is full of such rage that he doesn't look like Michael Conlan, his face is distorted. It was a bad, bad afternoon."

The taskforce is overseeing the qualification events and boxing tournament for next year’s Olympic 2020. It was placed in charge of preparations following the IOC’s decision to suspend the International Boxing Association (AIBA) in June.
It followed concerns over AIBA's governance, refereeing and judging and financial situation, with the IOC claiming the crisis presented serious legal, financial and reputational risks to the IOC and the Olympic Movement. Regional Olympic qualification events are due to run from February to April, with boxers who has failed to seal a place at Tokyo Olympic having one last chance at the final qualifier in Paris from May 13 to 24?
The taskforce is also overseeing the Tokyo Olympic test event, which concludes at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan venue today. A new monitoring system for judges has operated for the final two days of the test event, in a bid to help restore the confidence of boxers and coaches.
The system will see judges’ scores updated in real-time, enabling officials to see what the judge is reacting to during each bout. This will be supported by broadcast footage and four cameras, located in the corners of the boxing ring.
Tumblr media
It has been claimed the system may also be used to further the education of judges, while officials could be removed should their performances prove unsatisfactory. The IOC hope the system will help to ensure consistency in judging throughout the duration of the boxing competitions.

Olympic Boxing: Youth Olympic cheer for GB
Great Britain’s boxing medal record has been very good at the three summers Youth Olympic held so far, with three golds and three bronze leaving them behind Cuba and Russia. The inaugural Games were held in Singapore in 2010 and GB had one male boxer qualify for the event in Welsh bantamweight Zack Davies, who lost in the third-place bout to Poland’s Dawid Michelus 12-7.
Olympic lovers from all over the world are called to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Boxing lovers can book Olympic Boxing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.
Unlike the regular Olympic, only one bronze medal is awarded at the Youth Games, but it was a very creditable performance from Davies. The 2014 Games in Nanjing meant China became the first country to stage both the regular Olympic (Beijing 2008) and Youth Olympic. GB had three male boxers who had qualified and two delivered bronze medals, although Hackney’s Viddal Riley missed out.
Tumblr media
The under-81kg division as he lost out a split decision 2-1 to Armenia’s Narek Manasyan in the third-place bout. Nonetheless, it was again a very good performance from our local man and, in the under-52kg category, Muhammad Ali (how could he not succeed with a name like that?) secured a bronze medal after losing his semi-final to Shakur Stevenson, the eventual gold medalist from the USA. Ali, he bounced back to win the third-place contest by clearly outpointing India’s Gaurav Solanki to cement a fine tournament overall.
Peter McGrail also won bronze in the under-56kg class, after losing his semi-final encounter with Cuba’s eventual gold medalist Javier Ibanez Diaz. McGrail regrouped to outpoint Algeria’s Tamma Salem in their third-place bout to seal another fine display in this very tough and competitive tournament. At Buenos Aires in 2018, GB had outstanding success in the ring, with no fewer than three gold medals and a bronze for good measure.
GB won its first-ever gold medal in these Games through Ivan Hope Price with a first-round stoppage of Thailand’s Sarawut Sukthet in the final of their under-52kg encounter. Not to be outdone, Slovakian-born Karol Itauma won GB’s second gold medal with a 4-1 points success over Russia’s Ruslan Kolesnikov and a bronze medal went to Hassan Azim at under-64kg. Although outpointed in his semi-final by the eventual Olympic champion from Russia Ilya Popov, Azim regrouped to stop Morocco’s Mohammed Boulaoja in the third-place bout.
Tumblr media
For the first time at these Games, GB fielded a female boxer in the form of Londoner Caroline Dubois in the 60kg division. Older brother Daniel is already a multi-titled professional champion and tipped by many pundits as a future world heavyweight champion. Caroline won her three bouts in Buenos Aires with identical 5-0 scores, including her final triumph over Thailand’s Porntip Buapa to become the first British female boxer to both enter and then win a gold medal at the event.
She remains undefeated with a 40-0 record and, besides her Youth Olympic success, has also won three European Junior Championships, a World Youth Championship, a European Youth Championship, and two English National Youth Championships.
Caroline in her first bout as a senior in the lightweight division outpointed Ala Staradub of Belarus in her opening bout at the Tokyo Olympic Qualifying tournament at the Copper Box Arena last month. The event was then curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic before she could meet Finland’s Mira Potkonen in her next qualifying contest.
Tumblr media
But it should be noted that Potkonen derailed reigning Olympic lightweight champion, Katie Taylor, in Rio in 2016, when the Irishwoman was hoping to defend her the crown she had won at the London 2012 Games. We await further details of how and when this qualifying tournament will re-commence, given that the Tokyo Olympic have been postponed until the summer of 2021.
