I am Setsuna
I disliked I am Setsuna. Not a single one of the emotional beats worked for me, and I struggled to appreciate any of the characters. Spoilers follow.
We never understood why Endir didn't kill Setsuna. I assume he was moved by Setsuna's understanding, but since he's basically a cipher, we never see his thought process. Similarly, we lose out on a ton of catharsis from Nidr not telling Setsuna that he's her father. I have no clue why we get the reaper in our party immediately before the final boss.
Characters never ask the obvious questions. Aeterna is incredibly suspicious during half of the game, but everyone just lets that slide. Why? The most egregious plot point of all was the previous sacrifice dying of unrequited love, which is maybe the worst plot development I've seen in any game.
I understand why they introduced a time loop (they were trying to evoke Chrono Trigger, which they completely failed at), but that always feels hackneyed, and you are really putting yourself at a disadvantage when you do. Some games manage to overcome it, but I am Setsuna does not have the chops to do so, especially as a last moment revelation that could have easily been cut from the game.
The combat was passable (although they clearly didn't have any faith in it, as halfway through the game I could one shot 99% of encounters without losing any MP), but the way you had to farm spritnites was tedious and practically impossible without a guide. The guide I was following told me I had to get one spritnite—battlecry—but when I saw the requirements, I couldn't be bothered. Not the best if you're going for mechanical complexity.
Setsuna's character was woefully naive throughout the whole game. She keeps on trying to kill herself to save one character, which speaks to her willingness to doom the whole world just to save one person who would then die anyway. That said, clearly her being the sacrifice didn't really matter, as we've seen you can swap out people at a whim, which makes the fact that her entire family has been chosen as sacrifice much more suspicious. Who is choosing, and why do they hate her family so much?
I was glad Endir finally got the closure of killing Setsuna, but wasn't sure why she had us do it. She clearly was trying to show compassion to the kid by absorbing his essence, but it undercuts it pretty strongly when you just get yourself killed after.
The setting was incredibly bland. Snow may be the least interesting setting, and it's I am Setsuna's only setting. Combined with the piano, it gave the impression of a low budget affair.
That was compounded by some really amateur choices: the controller dead zone implementation was incredibly poor, and it led to not being able to move characters at a slight angle, which made navigating some of the bridges tedious. The save order being in chronological order instead of reverse chronological was another rookie mistake. These are easy problems to fix. Why didn't they fix them?
I'd say that this felt like an indie JRPG, but that's unfair to indie JRPGs. They wouldn't have made the same mistake, and probably would have at least made an attempt at a more interesting story to boot. There are probably hundreds of better JRPGs. Skip this one.

Sea of Stars: The best game you played as a child that released in 2023
When I was in middle school, I have vivid memories of playing Chrono Trigger. I rented it from my local video store, a poor man's family video. It even had a tanning bed, as was the style at the time. I sat in front of my grandmother's mid-size CRT television and was amazed at just about everything I saw. The beautiful pixel art, the various set pieces, the story, the music. Everything. My inner monologue for about a month after experiencing Chrono Trigger for the first time was using "thees" and "thous" a lot like Frog did in that localization. He was the best character so the way he spoke was the best way to speak. Simple as that.
Often times games try to ape Chrono Trigger because my experience with it is hardly a unique one. Most of the time, I feel these games miss the mark or fall short of it. They tease you with the "Chrono Trigger" but it more hits on some highlights that Chrono Trigger had instead of making an actual good game that can stand on its own merits. The example that comes most prominently to mind is "I Am Setsuna," a game I once wrote about on this blog. It's a game that mindlessly tries to take what makes Chrono Trigger a good game and slaps it onto something else. A soulless product developed by a company with a soulless name (Tokyo RPG Factory.)
My brother has been pestering me to play Sea of Stars for months now. Yet the specter of products like "I Am Setsuna" prevented me from making the jump for a long time. Yes, aesthetically, it played the part...but if I were to go back in time and rent this game from the fake Hollywood Video and play this on the mid-size CRT at my grandmother's house, would it capture my imagination? Would it stand on its own?
Yes.
On the surface, Sea of Stars looks like it's trying to be Chrono Trigger. They have the combo attacks, they have the wacky cast of characters from a variety of different backgrounds, the overworld and spritework looks pretty close and the music...well, the music can often feel like it was lifted straight from that very SNES game. But there's more to it than that. Quite literally. Sea of Stars doesn't just try to mimic the style of one beloved RPG, it lifts from several and becomes something of a Jack of all retro turn based trades.
The combat uses timed hits like Super Mario RPG - a system that's extremely easy to wrap your mind around but is extremely adept at keeping the player's attention. You can't just take your mind off of the game once you hit 'attack.' It also has the ability to change your characters in combat, which gives the game something of a Final Fantasy X (it's odd that a 20+ year old game is the 'newest' thing mentioned here) feeling. Sometimes a spot will call for a poison user, sometimes it will call for your warrior cook, sometimes it will call for your moon user. It's simple, but it makes each encounter feel unique and engaging. It also uses something akin to a limit break system, as seen in various Final Fantasy titles. Everybody gets an elaborate ultimate attack. When is the right time to use it? Even more variables tossed into a fairly easy-to-use system.
It's not just in the gameplay either. One of the big mistakes video game companies make when making 'new' retro games is that they cram too much story into the game. Don't get me wrong, stuff like Final Fantasy IV, Lunar Silver Star Story and Chrono Trigger have plenty of story, but go back and play those games and then go play Final Fantasy VII. The amount of dialogue and dedication to storytelling is next level compared to what you get in SNES games. Older RPGs have a smattering of world building and story but that is bolstered by the gameplay. Sea of Stars is similar in this regard. It does not have 'too much' story, it has about as much as you would see in an SNES RPG. It leaves something to the imagination. Not every last detail of the world is explained, you're left with a sense of wonder.
When I first heard the term 'solstice warrior,' I grimaced. It sounded so lame, like something out of a kid's cartoon. And yet, it is tackled with sincerity. They don't go out of their way to tell you every aspect of what goes into making these warriors, they keep things very simple and straight forward. It just feels authentic. By the end of the game I wanted to learn more about this world and these characters, I did not feel like everything had been spelled out in game and there was something left to discover. Even a post-game twist felt like something a kid would tell you at school and you'd just roll your eyes and say 'yeah fucking right Ned, I'm sure collecting all 60 conch shells will do that.'
My discovery with this game is that in order to create a 'love letter' to a genre, you need to focus on more than one game. It needs to just focus on lots of things. I am Setsuna feels like a shallow clone of Chrono Trigger. Sea of Stars feels like a game that saw great elements from a lot of other great games and came to its own conclusions by throwing those things together. I fully believe a middle school aged Derek would have been glued to his Grandma's CRT for a month straight playing this game. It's the highest compliment that I can pay this game. It's not better than Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI or Earthbound. But it still stands on its own and it is fantastic.

So that Partner Showcase and Indie World, huh?
In all honesty, this one kinda just went by me. Somewhat due to the lack of interesting stuff in it, but mostly due to you-probably-know-what. But nevertheless, let's cover this double whammy of a presentation
Balatro: Friends of Jimbo; DISTRACTION DANCE MUSIC HEARD. BEING THOROUGHLY DISTRACTED Neva; I swear I've seen this kind of game in like five different forms yet they all look the same. They're like Fromsoft games Moth Kubit; Corporately cute, I suppose Coffee Talk Tokyo; I don't drink coffee, so I can't really get the hype Sea of Stars; This just looks like the same kind of basic JRPG that you would see in any given anime when they need a "video game" to fill time PowerWash Simulator: Shrek DLC; someBODY ONCE TOLD ME THE WORLD WAS GONNA WASH ME! Morsels; Why does this look like Cuphead plus Little Nightmares to me? Date Everything; Anyone else remember Chairem Anime? Or at least skipped to Sofaden? Peglin; Isn't this the kind of game that's best suited for mobile? Wobbly Life; So Human Fall Flat but free roam? Pico Park 2; If there's one thing Grian taught me, its that this game is far more toxic than the Indie World guys are making it out to be Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope DX; You're telling me there's still stuff to add for Shovel Knight on Switch? I thought that was all burnt through Europa; Kinda getting BOTW vibes, NGL Cuisineer; ...So is it a roguelike but Overcooked or something? On Your Tail; Wonder how much furry you-know-what has been uploaded to you-know-where already? Metal Slug Tactics; So did SNK sell off Metal Slug or something? How does this count as Indie then? The Plucky Squire; ...Honestly I got nothin' for this one Pizza Tower; Y'ALL READY TO GET FUNKY?!
Tetris Forever; You guys think there are actually 99 Tetrises by this point? Star Overdrive; Why is this giving me Marvel vibes? Goat Simulator 3; It's Goat Sim. What else can I say? Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st; Basic-looking RPG. I got nothing Star Wars Hunters; Is this Star Wars Overwatch or something? ...okay S.T.A.L.K.E.R.; What is this, "I Can't Believe It's Not COD"? Worms Armageddon; Alright, where's my Holy Hand Grenade? Disney Dreamlight Valley; What was new within this that wasn't here the last time? The Patrick Star Game; Is this a goat sim-like game? No, this is Patrick Fitness Boxing 3; I imagine if you made this into a VR game, it would become the new Wiimote-into-TV Capcom Fighting Collection 2; Power Stone & co rise from the grave (Except the one Capcom fighting game series that's all about things rising from graves) MVC Fighting Collection; Break out the Mango Sentinels and find where your curly mustaches at, because mid-September is MAHVEL TIME, BAYBEE! Atelier Yumia; Honestly this looks like a poor mans Xenoblade to me Suikoden Iⅈ When will these sprite on 3d rpgs END?! Dragon Quest III HD-2D; (read above) Castlevania Dominus; Huh... neat Civilization VII; Let's just hope that Ghandi is as far away from this one as possible this time round Tales of Graces f; Wait, there's more to Tales of than just Lloyd and Yuri? Wow MySims: Cozy Bundle; Miis plus Sims make this, apparently FNAF: Help Wanted 2; har har har-har har har har-har har-har FNAF: Security Breach - Ruin; Dude, even the trailer was kind slow in framerate. That's how you know that this game has it rough Epic Mickey: Rebrushed; Unless I'm mistaken, I think that was actually the first time we've gotten a look at Tomorrow City. Every other location in the Wasteland was shown off before, but not here Tales of the Shire; Neat Just Dance 2025; Just Dance must have found the Fountain of Youth with how little dying its doing Funko Fusion; This just looks like a lesser Lego Dimensions, to be honest EA Sports FC 25; Dude, who even cares about EA Sports games? (Outside of our goat and savior Madden 08) Lego Horizons Adventures; I just want to know if and/or when the next Tt Lego game will be Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma; In all honestly, the whole "Japanese" aesthetic has been far overplayed to me. It's completely lost any luster in my eyes Yakuza Kiwami; FOUND YOU ON SWITCH, KIRYU-CHAN!!!
All in all, kind of uneventful. But at least not in terms of the rest of today, because SONIC 3 TRAILER, LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!

Back when those godawful GTA Trilogy Remasters came out, someone I follow made a very good point that was along the lines of: you can't take something created by a developers at the top of their game, hand it off to a (charitably) mid-tier studio, and expect technological developments to just magically make up the difference.
The reason I started think about that is because some people started passing around the elevator pitch for some Kickstarter Indie Throwback RPG that did the "unlike modern RPGs, which are Convoluted and Lame, we're basing our game on good RPGs, which are Straightforward and Based" thing, naturally citing Chrono Trigger (and a selection of other SNES RPGs) the way all these kinds of projects always cite Chrono Trigger (and a selection of other SNES RPGs) as an example of what their game will be like.
All this is to say: if you're making an Indie Throwback RPG, stop fucking citing Chrono Trigger as an example of what your game will be like. Shoot for the stars, but do you really think you and your team are at the level of 1995 Squaresoft ft. The Dragon Quest Duo??? Are you going to play basketball like Michael Jordan and play hockey like Wayne Gretzky, too? Just because you have infinitely more and better resources available to you does not mean you will be able to effectively recreate what they did! Tokyo RPG Factory made I Am Setsuna, a game that is basically only ever brought up as an example of a game that wanted to be like Chrono Trigger (and Final Fantasy X), which is to say, Not Fondly Remembered.

I saw a game called I Am Setsuna and decided to play it as it was Square Enix, and it reminded me of Lost Sphear which i enjoyed. Well i found out that IAS is a prequel of sorts to LS, and so far i have sorta been enjoying it, it is very slow and not really great, but like, I'm playing it and wanna see the story through so i guess that says something
Well, it was going mostly well until i got to a thing called the "Aurorean Tiger". So, there were 2 bosses i DESPISED in Lost Sphear. 1 was a frog that stun locked and SLOWLY killed you. Like, literally paralyses the whole team, you can't do anything as your entire team is paralysed, it slowly whittles you down, but it has no cool down on the paralyses attack, do it spams it, so you can't do anything, you just sit there watching yourself die. Pure fucking luck i beat it on an attempt. The other boss was a boss near the end that is "optional" but not really, and that boss can full heal, it isn't really massively powerful, so dying to it isn't easy in a sense. But like the frog, this boss has no limits on full heals. I think my final attempt to beat it took an hour or more if i recall? Cause it juat kept spamming full heals
Well this Aurorean Tiger, it attacks twice in one turn, has an attack that insta kills some party members, others that take down half their health. But like i said, it attacks twice usually before you can do anything, so essentially before your turn, one of your party members dies. Nothing you can do about it. So you're stuck in a loop of resurrecting party members, no way to get them back to max health, even if you do they still could be one shot, so they die, then it targets another party member, so you need to decide to resurrect or heal, but if you take too long to decide it attacks you. And the entire time this is going on, you are doing zero damage to it. Because you can't. Because everyone is dead or stuck on support.
Every guide i read said you need to be at least level 40 and use a stratergy including counter. I was levels 23-24 and didn't have counter. I slowly grinded to level 30, but physically couldn't get counter, with no way to get it as the game has no fast travel, and my only means to going back to previous areas easily is after the boss, and i needed to go back all the way to the start practically to get a drop to get counter. I have been stuck on this fucking boss all day. Nothing worked. Until i got a bullshit fucking luck of a run where i SLOWLY managed to kill it
I have seen in forums people complaining about people complaining about this boss saying "You're complaining about being challenged 🙄" but no. I'm complaining in the same way i am complaining about the frog and that other fucking "optional" moon boss. A boss shouldn't be able to repeatedly spam insta kill attacks. A boss shouldn't be able to repeatedly spam mass stun attacks. A boss shouldn't be able to repeatedly spam endless full heals. There's a difference in challenge and straight bullshit. I swear, nothing better be like this boss now afterwards, if it is i might just give up. This being in both games, i dunno if I'll play a game again if it is produced by this Tokyo RPG Factory or whatever
