Klaine December Fanworks Challenge!
Tumblr media
Hey Everyone!!
Polls have been tallied, the people have spoken, and everyone wants some December Klaine action!
So this year we'll be launching the
December Klaine Fanworks Challenge!!
What does this mean?
DAILY PROMPTS
There will be daily prompts beginning December 1 and ending December 21. Hopefully this will give everyone who wants a daily prompt plenty of opportunity for that, but also give participants time to complete the challenge and still have time for whatever holiday celebrations come their way. These daily prompts are not themed in any way and come from a random word generator I found online.
WEEKLY PROMPTS
The weekly themed option was a popular choice, so we're going to try it out! The theme for this year will be Christmas Songs, and each Friday for four weeks there will be a post featuring a Christmas song with a sampling of lyrics from that song to inspire you to be naughty or nice.
Write either or both! Mix and match! Whatever works for you! Not a writer? Fanart is very welcome!!
We'll be joining forces with the @todaydreambelieversfic blog to boost the fanworks, and will let you know what you can do to help in the coming days!
Also, for now we're going to keep this challenge on the Klaine Advent blog (brought to you by Klaine Advent, as it were). Hopefully this won't be too confusing...
Look for a post on Thursday with more details but please reach out with any questions before then and we'll try to get them answered.
And very special thanks to @caramelcoffeeaddict who is working up all of the artwork and came up with the brand new name for the challenge!!

rainjoy Has A New Post. It's Personal
rainjoy is one of my favorite Klaine fanfic authors. Their first Klaine fanfic was published on LiveJournal in 2011, their last in 2021. Health issues have become more intense over time. Their most famous works, All The Other Ghosts and Grey, were published in 2012 and 2013. So those who've joined the fandom fairly recently may not even know about their other fics, the most recent one being from 2021. rainjoy has written Klaine in every genre: high school!Klaine, college!Klaine, married!Klaine, supernatural!Klaine, fantasy!Klaine, and even superhero!Klaine.
Here is a link to rainjoy's works on Live Journal
Here's a link for Dreamwidth
I hope that you'll help boost it by re-blogging. Thanks in advance, @klaineccfanficlibrary and @todaydreambelieversfic
This is rainjoy's post from today (October 27, 2023).
"Hello, I’m still alive.
Hello, I do mean it, hello anybody around to see this, I really hope you’ve been well, I’m sorry I haven’t been around, I *haven’t* been well. But I have, over a course of fucking months, actually written something, so I’m writing *this* here so I don’t need to leave a novel-length author’s note on it, as some kind of explanation of where I’ve been.
Largely, I’ve been in bed, I’m likely going there again after posting this, they need to invent new words for how tired I am so much of the time, my upgraded wheelchair is worth about as much as my *laptop*, my life revolves around Can I? Probably not. and lots and lots and lots of ‘resting’. I’ve not been well, but please don’t worry, I’ve not been unhappy. This is the golden age of being ill, the sheer quantity of stuff out there to amuse the bedbound – I have books and podcasts, all of Netflix, I practically live on Sky: Children of the Light, when I’m too dopey even for that I have Animal Crossing, when I am genuinely such a puddle of not-human lethargy that all I need is for time to pass until I feel just slightly better again I have videos of other people playing video games on YouTube and I’m sorry my darling baby moths I will pick you up and help you every single time but it will never not be funny watching someone go through Eden for the first time on YouTube, it just never will not make me laugh, oh my gods I’m so *sorry* my loves <3
So anyway, there’s all that, that’s where I’ve been, life really does not work out the way you planned it to, huh? Because outside of my bed, I know I have messages and emails and someone got a tattoo?? You got a tattoo and I’m just really sorry I haven’t been in touch, my energy has to be paid out like a miser, if I want to wash my hair then wow the world is really not getting anything else out of me, you know? But I am still here, and I do still love the things I love. I still think all of it is worth it. I think the world is a *lot* of fun, though I bear in mind that still, and always, we live through very frightening and distressing times. Which actually makes me think we need to cling to the things we love *more*, not less, love makes better people of us, when we let it.
So I did watch the new season of Good Omens when it came out, and safe to say I was not impressed, but it did jog in me the memory that didn’t I write a sequel to it? Yes I did, and it involved *all* that blood. But I reread it – it’s like reading a stranger’s writing after so long – and that jogged the memory: Didn’t you start a sequel to *this*?
Yes I did! Two thirds written, actually, hurrah for my past self. The last third took, I don’t know, when did the new season come out, it took that long. I used to sneeze out this sort of thing. This, now, is getting at my arms, it’ll be another lie down soon. But anyway, the point of all this: I live yet. In the next few days I *hope* I will be formatting and posting a sequel to But Thou Readst Black because of course everyone wants *that* back in their heads again, my gods. And I hope hope hope you’ve been well, I do think of people while I’m stuck doing nothing but pooling my brain out of my ears on YouTube. Look after yourselves, take care of each other, my gods you tattooed yourself I mean more power to you but it alarms me when things I make turn out to be *permanent*, you know? It feels like I barely touch the world anymore, my circumference has become so small, but it makes the world seem only more precious. Take good care of it, and of yourself as part of it. And very, very much love, to anyone remaining to see this, much love <3"

4, 23, 29, 34, 42
Do you sleep on your back, stomach, or side?
My side! I can't any other way.
Do you believe in aliens?
Yes**
**Meaning that I believe that the universe is too big and we just aren't special enough to be the only ones. At the same time, I don't believe all the random UFOs people captured with their iphones are legit aliens.
Does it take you a long time to make decisions?
No, absolutely not. My mind is probably made up too quickly, and I should probably assess things more thoroughly.
What is your favorite flower?
Oh, it is so cliche but every time I think about it, it always comes back to - roses.
Tag your 5 favorite blogs
What, no, this question is the worst! It's like saying what people are your favorites, and I am not good at that. So, here are five blogs.
@todaydreambelieversfic <------ shameless self promotion, sure why not? ;)
@gleetournaments <------- for chaotic neutral tendencies
@klainepolls <------- this is not me, but I'm really amused that there is a TMZ area of the Klaine fandom now.
@snarkyhag <-------- Everyone should bug Snarky for something.
@shadow-charmeleon <----- my little brother, go say hi! ;)

Ljubim te (8/24)
Notes: Ho ho ho merry bathtub eve to the ones who celebrate! We’ve once again reached the end of the Advent. Well, the event. I am far from done. I have 2/3rd of the story to go and it will happen!
I am just once again so grateful for the Advent. I always look forward to it, because I am just pleased that this fandom still holds this annual event, even when the show’s been gone for over 7 years by now.
Thank you mods of @klaineadvent for hosting and thank you @todaydreambelieversfic, @klaineccfanficlibrary and @the-lima-bean for reblogging people’s works. Now, let’s read about Kurt having A Moment.
AO3 | S&C
–
Classes start and life in Ljubljana passes quickly. Kurt falls into a routine in his new life here. During the week he studies hard and eats a lot of Boni with his roommates or new people he’s met at university. In the weekends he takes time to explore the city and the entire country, if possible. Or even other countries.
Sunil and Kurt join a trip to Zagreb, in Croatia, for international students. Blaine is envious when Kurt sends him many photo’s. Blaine also starts his work. Kurt doesn’t really understand what Blaine is doing, but Blaine doesn’t mind.
Blaine’s also met a new person at the company named Tadeja, who acts as a Slovenian guide. Kurt, Blaine, Sunil and Tadeja often have dinner in the city centre, and Kurt’s happy with the fact that things are slowly falling into place.
March rolls around and the weather is getting a little bit nicer.
He also finally takes Blaine to the burger place, which has a lot of tables outside in an alley. When Kurt first visited Burger Time, he had to sit inside, which was also fun, but sitting on these wooden benches under arched roof adds something to the experience.
“I am once again so jealous about your Boni,” Blaine says when the food’s been served.
“My life will never be the same once I return to New York,” Kurt laments, “My friends back home are also jealous.”
“So is Quinn,” Blaine says and Kurt nods. Apparently Blaine talks a lot about Kurt to Quinn. Kurt finds it flattering that Blaine speaks a lot about Kurt to his girlfriend. According to Blaine, Quinn can’t wait to meet Kurt in April.
“How’s the job?” Kurt asks before taking a huge bite from this burger. It’s almost the perfect burger. The perfect burger can be found at this grill, but that grill doesn’t offer Boni.
Blaine shrugs.
“It’s a job.”
That doesn’t sound too optimistic. Kurt motions to Blaine to continue.
“It’s more like a vanity project,” Blaine explains. Kurt raises an eyebrow, so he continues. “Like I said, I am there to oversee stuff, shake people’s hands and sign forms. But it’s become clear that my dad is still the one in charge. I’m just there to look good.”
“… And is that a bad thing?” Blaine does look good, after all.
“I just hoped for more trust from the higher-ups, aka my father, but I suppose that I am still too new for this,” Blaine answers, “In his eyes. I graduated with honours, but alas, so I am a bit disappointed.”
“Sorry to hear that.”
“Ah well,” Blaine says and he gives Kurt a small smile, “It’s not what I hoped for, but I am still glad to be here. In Slovenia. With you. A-And Tadeja and Sunil, of course.”
“Of course.”
--
Kurt is absolutely drenched. It’s the worst storm he’s endured in a long time, and he had to go to class. Kurt was smart enough to take the bus, instead of a bike, but even walking to and from the bus got him soaked. His umbrella didn’t last and the thunder is horrendous.
This means that Kurt is extra pissed when he arrives at his building only to hear that classes have been cancelled because of the weather.
“Are you kidding me?” he yells at his building. Luckily, the building has an arch so he can shelter from the rain, but he is pissed and annoyed and he does not feel like making the small trek back home, because then he’ll have to wait at the bus station in this rain.
Suddenly, he has an idea.
KH: Are you home?
BA: Yes
Jackpot! Kurt quickly explains the situation over text and he ends by asking if he can come over to wait for the rain to pass.
BA: 👍
It’s still a ten minute walk and Kurt doesn’t want to run because of tripping hazard, but when he reaches the place, Blaine’s already waiting for him.
“Jesus, Kurt, get in here!” he yells and he ushers Kurt inside.
The moment Kurt’s inside, Blaine helps Kurt out of the soaked clothing.
“Let me- let me see if I have something you can borrow,” he says quickly once Kurt’s down to his underwear. Blaine practically runs to the bedroom. Kurt also realises how weird the situation is, but he was too caught up in getting rid of the wet clothes.
Blaine returns with a hoodie and sweatpants.
“Sorry, not your usual style, but I don’t know what else to give!”
Blaine also has a towel for Kurt.
They exchange clothes so that Kurt can get changed and so that Blaine can hang the others to dry. Kurt looks around. It’s the first time he’s actually inside Blaine’s apartment and it looks nice, but also a bit bare. Kurt’s small room is filled with photo’s of friends and family, but Kurt can’t see any of it here.
“Coffee?” Blaine asks.
“Please! And again, sorry to impose!”
“It’s all right,” Blaine says
“I hope I didn’t interrupt anything!”
Blaine shakes his head.
“It’s fine.”
--
A few hours later, Blaine’s fallen asleep against Kurt’s shoulder. They were watching a movie and the sound of the rain made Blaine doze off. Kurt places some of the blanket over him, until he realises that it might be a bit weird. They’re not going to cuddle on Blaine’s couch under a shared blanket, right?
Well, maybe it doesn’t matter. Blaine’s clearly comfortable around Kurt, which isn’t always a given with straight guys.
Kurt watches Blaine sleep and a fond smile forms on his face.
Blaine looks so cute when he’s asleep. He’s so nice that he led Kurt come over. Kurt’s only known Blaine for a short time, but he’s already become such a great friend. And it’s different than with Sunil. Sunil is also a friend and Kurt likes having him around, but hanging out with Blaine is different in a way.
He can’t really understand why.
Or maybe he can.
When Kurt starts to doze off as well, he realises that maybe he has a small crush on Blaine after all.
–
End notes: Burger Time, my beloved. I had Boni there once and then a few weeks later I took my family to that place, and the waiter remembered me! Although - and I am sorry to say this Kurt - Burger Time didn’t have the best burger. That title belongs to Grill No. 5, but that one closed down after the first COVID wave, and it got replaced by a paella place.
And yes, thunder! I also had to endure a huge storm where there were crazy winds and heavy rain showers. I was inside, though, since ya know, lockdown, but I decided to make good use of that (admittedly terrifying) storm for plot!

Thank you @todaydreambelieversfic and everyone who got me to 250 reblogs!
Day 3 song prompt: Rita Coolidge's "We're All Alone".
Seashore Sight Is An Art
Blaine is a part time artist by shore. He sees many people everyday but that day was his lucky day, when he gets to meet a handsome boy. Fate had planned something else. Maybe a sea of water to engulf humans.
High school!Klaine
More angst than the last fic. Comments and kudos are appreciated

Tumblr media
4 years ago today, @spaceorphan18 created a blog for gleeks and klainers, to celebrate the show that had brought so many fans together. It initially started off as a fic prompt blog, but quickly became so much more. In the past 4 years, TDB hosted episode and song tournaments (and sighed in frustration when we voted for our favorites Every.Single.Time), polls that delighted us and frustrated us to the point of insanity, fan fiction and art recommendations which eventually moved to @todaydreambelieversfic, spotlights on authors so we got to know our favorite creators a little better, and group episode rewatches from season 1 onward. Even more impressively, SO hosted 160 podcasts, where she talked to other fans and edited all of our thoughts and giddiness and enthusiastic love for the show into 2 hour episodes of weekly meta.
In short, @todaydreambelievers has kept fandom alive and vibrant over the last four years. And the klaine/glee fandom would not be what it is today without it.
The TDB rewatch and podcast will be winding down in a few short weeks. Please help celebrate this little blessing of fandom by posting something to let TDB know how much we appreciate their time and devotion - and don’t forget to tag @todaydreambelievers so it can be seen and shared.
@snarkyhag and I have also set up a paypal donation site to help cover some of the costs of hosting the podcasts (160!!!) as well here:  https://www.paypal.com/pools/c/8gzOe3yDZY

Now you know how happy we can be...

TDB  Rewatch   Season 6 wrap  FicRec  s6-series and future
there are two multi-chapter fics that cover the entire season from 6.01 through 6.13
Somebody Loves You  by @honeysucklepink  Summary: My "nice" Klaine Advent 2015 fic: missing scenes from Glee Season Six. Chapter titles are the prompts. 6.01 - 6.13
Elevator to Home  by Writesalott  Summary:  Starts with the Elevator kiss from 6.05 and continues with extended scenes from our favourite s6 Klaine moments: read what they were thinking and see what happened after. Branches into the 5yr time gap and beyond. Alternates between Blaine and Kurt's point of view. All happy Klaine. 6.05 - 6.13
Future Fics: some of them that have been written early in the Glee-run and therefore might be slightly AU (cause nobody could foresee the mess that s6 would become) but they are still adorable and worth the read.
The Apartment  by @spaceorphan18   Summary: Just a little piece about Kurt and Blaine and their first NYC apartment, set not long after Dreams Come True. German translation soon now on AO3 and Fanfiktion.
All We’ve Ever Done  by @flamingmuse  Summary: They’d danced together so many times by now, and every single time had been special, because it had been the two of them.  Futurefic.
4 Times Kurt Gets Cockblocked by Blaine’s Finals and One Time He Doesn’t   by @wowbright   Summary: Future!fic. Based on a prompt by the lovely verdandil, whom I miss: "Kurt and Blaine get cockblocked by finals. Cue frustration (in any sense) and tension and post-finals celebrations." Absolute fluff.
Refuge  by trufflemores (aka @captain-truffles)  Summary: Blaine is sick.
Substitute  by trufflemores (aka @captain-truffles)  Summary:  Kurt is sick.
Tomorrow, Today Will Be Yesterday  by @flamingmuse  Summary: Kurt and Blaine in the future, when our now is their past.
Same Old Story  by Corinna  (aka @chiasmuslovesme) Summary:  Love has a mind of its own.Future-fic, references 6x08.
The Love You Make  by Corinna  (aka @chiasmuslovesme) Summary: Blaine still loves a proposal. Future-fic, references 6.08.
It’s Getting Better and Better  by @spinmybowtie  Summary:  Kurt and Blaine reflect on the past 25 years by looking through an old box.
all the baby and daddies!Klaine fics are here in the episode fic rec
Enjoy <3   and feel free to add more

There is no way that Kurt is going to Tina's wedding still single. He doesn't want to give Adam the chance to say 'I told you so'. He thought about hiring someone from one of those services, but there's a fellow student at NYADA that might fill the role better.

What are five fics you enjoyed reading this year?
Nonny, I'm so sorry - I don't believe I read any fics this year outside of @snarkyhag's fun drabbles.
But I do encourage you to check out the Klaine Advent where a lot of great authors are still writing good things! Also @todaydreambelieversfic and @the-lima-bean have a lot of great things on them. Fascinatingly - the Klaine fandom is still going pretty strong, despite its low numbers, so please do check them out!!
Also - if anyone has recommendations for Nonny, please share!

Fic: Déjà Vu
Written for @todaydreambelieversfic’s Fic Exchange. My recipient this year is @black-john-lennon. And let me just say every prompt Kay gave was HILARIOUS! But this is what I went with: "Blame It on the Alcohol part 2. One morning Blaine goes to wake up their daughter. She's in the bathroom, there's a boy in her bed who wakes up and says 'where am I'."
Rated T, 3550 words. Link to AO3.
Blaine is suspicious the moment he walks into his house. Usually he arrives home from NYU to plenty of noise courtesy of his eight-year-old twins. But there is no evidence of Caden or Nolan, let alone their older sisters.
“Cade? Nolan?” he calls out as he unwraps his scarf and peels off his coat. “Anyone home?”
It isn’t until he enters the kitchen to get a bottle of water that he hears footsteps bounding down the staircase. “Hi, Daddy!” Sabrina says cheerfully, pecking Blaine on the cheek. “How was your day?”
Blaine eyes her up and down. “It was well until a few moments ago. What are you wanting now?”
Sabrina feigns surprise--her facial expressions have always been a carbon copy of Rachel’s. “Whatever do you mean?”
“Your brothers aren’t down here fighting each other or attempting to kill the other on their Playstation. Either they actually are dead and  you buried their bodies hoping Dad and I wouldn’t find out, or you convinced them to do their homework to get something out of me.”
“Why do you assume it’s me and not Stella?” she asks, taking an apple out of the fruit bowl.
“Because she’s the good child.” As Sabrina takes a bite, Blaine scrunches his nose. “Ew, wash that first.”
Sabrina huffs at his request, but she passes around Blaine to rinse the fruit. “Fine. I convinced them to do their homework before you came home.”
Blaine hops up onto the stool perched in front of the island. “And what exactly are you looking to get out of this?” he asks.
“I was hoping you could extend my curfew tonight?”
He sighs. “Sabrina…”
“Please Daddy? Lily turns sixteen tomorrow and she’s having her party tonight. Her parents are taking her out to the Hamptons in the morning so that’s the only reason why I’m not staying over. Just until 1? I promise I’ll be home then and will do whatever you want me to this weekend.”
He knows why she’s asking him. At sixteen Sabrina is every bit an Anderson, and she’s used it to her advantage from the moment she realized Blaine is her biological father. Except for Rachel’s chocolate eyes and prominent nose, she is the spitting image of him with Cooper’s (and yes, Rachel’s) lust for getting what he wants. If the question was raised to Kurt he would put his foot down and remind her that she’s to be home at 11.
Sabrina then sweetens the deal. “I’ll clean the kitchen for the next week.”
Blaine eyes her warily. “When your brothers are on spring break and prone to make every mess imaginable?”
“And I’ll babysit one night so you and Dad can go out,” she adds.
He finally relents. “Okay, but only until midnight since that’s when the city’s curfew is. And no complaining when I take advantage of the last addendum.”
“That’s fine,” Sabrina says as she pulls Blaine into a hug. “Thanks Daddy!”
It’s an easy evening with Stella and the twins. Blaine decides to order some pizza and put on a couple Disney movies. Stella rolls her eyes but watches along as Moana travels the ocean. He’s so invested in everything that he almost misses Sabrina slipping out the door to the party. “Bye Daddy!” she calls out.
“Bye Sab--wait, come back here.” When Blaine looks up he’s horrified. Sabrina is dressed in the smallest denim shorts she owns, ripped leggings underneath, and a tight black tank top that shows off too much of her belly. “Are you serious with that outfit right now?”
Sabrina rolls her eyes. “What more do you want? I have everything that needs covered up clothed. It’s not like I’m going in just a bra and panties.”
“I know, and I appreciate that. It’s just a little cold for that, isn’t it?”
“I’m walking three blocks. I’m going to have my jacket on for the entire walk. After that I’m pretty sure the Ortiz’s house won’t be set up like the Arctic.” She leans down to put on her Doc Martens that sit in the foyer. “I shouldn’t have to rely on your approval for what I choose to wear when I’m stuck in a uniform five days a week.”
“When you’re under eighteen I think you do…”
“It’s a high school party.  I’m not wearing it to a Broadway show, or to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. You can’t tell me you and Dad--well, Dad alone, I guess,” she smirks, “didn’t wear whatever you wanted that may not have lived up to the elders’ expectations?”
Blaine sighs. “I feel like I should be offended.”
Sabrina reaches up to pat Blaine’s bow tie. “Daddy, you’re forty and you’ve always dressed like you’re seventy-five. But I know that Dad wore a kilt to your first prom. Was Grandpa okay with that?”
“How did…”
“Rachel has pictures of it. Something about savoring a night to remember despite the circumstances?”
Blaine finally relents. “Okay, you’re right. I’m sorry. Have a good night, sweetie.”
She grins and grabs her jacket. “Love you!” she says before she exits through the front door. Blaine pads over to the window to watch her disappear down the street.
He doesn’t think about what happened again until Kurt comes home and accidentally wakes him up. “Oh, sorry,” Kurt whispers.
“S’ok,” Blaine mumbles. “How was it tonight?”
“Pretty good. Audra McDonald and her kids were in the audience tonight.”
“I hate you.”
Kurt kisses him on the forehead. “Hey, you’re the one who gave up theater to be home with Sabrina.”
“Please don’t remind me when you’re meeting Broadway royalty,” Blaine says. He then notices it’s after 12:30. “Shit.”
“What?” Kurt asks.
“Did you notice if Sabrina was home? I gave her an extra hour on her curfew.”
“Why’d you do that?”
“Lily’s sweet sixteen party.” Blaine shifts onto his other side to face Kurt, who is undressing.
“And you weren’t waiting at the door for her?”
“I came to bed after I put the boys down. It was long day at work.”
Kurt pulls a t-shirt and flannel pants out of the dresser. “You poor thing. But to put you out of your misery, she is home. I saw her door was closed.”
Blaine sighs in relief and collapses against the pillow. “Good.”
“I do wish, however, that you had asked me before you agreed. I’m still the kids’ father even if I’m not here as much as you.”
“Sorry,” Blaine says. “It was a last minute thing and I figured at that point you were on your way to the theater.”
“It’s okay.” Kurt climbs into bed and snakes his left arm across Blaine’s midsection. “I probably would have agreed with you if it’s a one-time extension.”
“It was. And I reduced it from her original suggestion of coming home at 1.”
“Father of the year,” Kurt jokes. “Any plans for the morning?”
Blaine snuggles into the warm body of his husband, closing his eyes. “Waffles and bacon?”
“Sounds good,” Kurt says. He sweetly kisses Blaine. “Love you.”
“Love you too,” Blaine replies before he drifts off.
There are few rules in the Anderson-Hummel household. Blaine never wanted the kids to grow up feeling like they had to be “on” every single moment the way he was at home. They have their chores, they have to do their homework, but other than that everything is lax and free.
Except for Saturday morning breakfast.
That’s the time for the family to be together. A good home-cooked breakfast before Kurt heads off to the theater, before soccer games and ballet recitals, and before Blaine loses himself in grading papers or checking his classes’ online discussions gives him a sense of gratitude. Since the Friday night dinners Kurt grew up with wouldn’t work with Broadway, it was a tradition they started the weekend after they brought Sabrina home from the hospital. Even if Kurt has to travel for fashion shows he almost always makes sure he can get a Friday night flight so he can be there.
Blaine finishes setting the butter, syrup, and sugar on the table before glancing into the family room. Caden and Nolan are watching the latest popular cartoon he can’t seem to understand and Stella is playing a game on her iPad. There’s no sign of Sabrina anywhere. “Did you wake Sabrina up?” he asks Kurt.
“I texted her twenty minutes ago,” Kurt replies as he flips the waffle maker over.
“Should I make sure she’s alive?”
“Good idea.”
Blaine shuffles through the kitchen and family room to the stairs, taking them slower than he did when they first moved into the house as age begins to catch up. Even if he’s only just into his forties, Blaine feels it in his knees after chasing four children for the past seventeen years. He’s halfway grateful he didn’t return to the stage after Sabrina was born or he’d probably feel worse.
When he reaches her closed door he gives a swift rap on it. “Sweetheart? Breakfast is almost ready. Dad made waffles.” She doesn’t answer, so he knocks again. “Sabrina, wake up,” he says louder.
Blaine hears nothing. He gives in and turns the door handle, peeking in. The lump under the blankets isn’t stirring. While Sabrina is a typical teenager who prefers to sleep in as much as possible, it isn’t usually this difficult to get her up for Saturday morning breakfast. As long as she makes it downstairs she’s allowed to sleep in on Sundays. He pads over to her bed and shakes her shoulder. “Honey, it’s time to get up,” he pleads.
A low groan meets his ears as the lump stirs. It confuses Blaine. “Are you okay?” he asks.
Hands reach up to the top of the purple comforter to pull it down and Blaine is met with a shock of short, electric blue hair. Green eyes meet his and widen. “Oh my god, where am I?” the owner of said hair and eyes asks in a voice that matches the groan from before.
Blaine’s jaw drops as he realizes--it’s a boy. A boy who, as he cringes while sitting up, is obviously hungover. And this scenario is all too familiar to Blaine as he’s hit with memories. Memories of being this boy, of feeling the after effects of the Rachel Berry House Party Trainwreck Extravaganza, of being woken up by a startled Burt who was expecting Kurt to be in bed.
He backs up and hits something in the doorway, knocking him to the floor. “Daddy, are you okay?” Sabrina asks as she helps Blaine up.
He just looks at her, already showered and dressed. Through clenched teeth he replies, “Breakfast is ready. Your friend can stay to eat, but then he has to leave.” Blaine then walks out, leaving Sabrina’s questions behind.
Blaine is shaking as he makes his way downstairs and back to the kitchen. “Kurtthere’saboy,” he hisses.
Kurt stares at him. “Excuse me?”
He takes a couple breaths to soothe his nerves. “Sabrina has a boy. In her room.”
The spatula falls from Kurt’s hand, clanging on the linoleum. “Excuse me?” Kurt shrieks.
“I know!” Blaine says, bewildered. “And get this--he’s hungover.”
Kurt snickers. “What?” Blaine asks.
“Don’t you think this sounds a little familiar?”
“You don’t think that was my first thought?”
“Hopefully there isn’t a sexual identity crisis involved…” Blaine shoves his husband in response. “Hey, kidding!” Kurt jokes.
They’re interrupted by the clearing of a throat. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Anderson-Hummel,” the boy says, looking marginally better than when Blaine found him. “Sabrina was going to wake me up an hour ago to go home but I didn’t sleep well.”
“It’s fine,” Blaine replies, not wanting to give the boy any feeling of compassion. “We’ve all been there at some point. But I don’t think I remember Sabrina talking about you at all?”
“Oh, sorry. I’m Jack Wyatt.” Jack holds out his hand.
Blaine takes it. “Nice to meet you, Jack. We’re having waffles and bacon if you want to have a seat at the table.”
“Sorry, I can’t have waffles unless they’re gluten free.”
“Will scrambled eggs work?”
Jack nods. “That’s fine.”
As soon as he leaves to sit at the dining room table Kurt glares at Blaine. “He’s staying for breakfast?”
“Did you want me to throw him out right away?” Blaine asks.
“I guess not. I mean, Dad didn’t throw you out when he found you.”
“See? What Would Burt Hummel Do works very well in this situation. Besides, I want to torture Sabrina a little before we ground her.”
Kurt smirks. “What do you mean ‘we’? I have to leave in an hour.”
“I have to do this by myself?” Blaine whines.
“What Would Burt Hummel Do?”
He grabs two plates. “I hate you.”
It turns out Jack is an extremely good kid. He makes an effort to engage all of the kids in conversation (Nolan especially loves his hair and Kurt has to tell him he can’t dye his until he’s in his thirties), he wants to study computer engineering in college, and he’s in a band that does covers of early millennium music, which makes Blaine feel old. Kurt offers to drive him home on his way into the city but Jack refuses, citing that he doesn’t want to take advantage of everything they offer when they weren’t expecting him.
After Blaine convinces Stella to take the twins to the park for a couple hours, Sabrina attempts to hide in her room. “Not so fast,” Blaine stops her.
“Come on, Daddy,” she whines.
“Nope, I said we were going to talk.” He leads her into the living room where she flops onto the couch, crossing her arms across her chest. He sits next on the other end, turned facing her. “Sabrina,” he starts, “in what world did you think it was okay to do what you did?”
She shrugs. “I was being nice. He--”
“I don’t care if you were being nice. You’re too young to have a guy in your room.”
“Seriously? That’s the route you’re taking? You and Dad started dating when you were my age.”
“But we didn’t spend the night.”
“Bullshit,” she spits out.
“Sabrina Ariane!” Blaine barks.
Sabrina curls up tighter. “Sorry.”
“The point I’m making is that Jack shouldn’t have spent the night, especially when we’d never met him before. You’re too young for anything that would necessitate him even seeing your room…”
“Okay, see, I know you’re lying now because Dad told me when we had the sex talk that you two did it when you were a junior--not that I ever wanted to know about your sex life. Besides, we’re just friends. I don’t think he sees me like that.”
“You don’t?”
“His girlfriend dumped him last night,” Sabrina says, staring intently at her chipping nail polish. “And he got a little too into the vodka after that. I wasn’t about to let him drive home, so I brought him here. I figured if the same thing happened to you you’d go out of your way for a friend, right?”
Blaine reluctantly nods. “Can I tell you a story? Without any judgment?”
“Sure.”
“When Jack popped his head out of the covers I actually was hit with a sense of déjà
vu, because I’ve been in the same position before.”
“You mean you brought a guy friend home when he was drunk?”
“Your dad brought a very drunk me home and Grandpa Hummel found me in bed.”
Sabrina’s jaw drops open before she starts laughing. “You have got to be kidding me,” she says through fits. “At least you didn’t get drunk because of a girl though.”
It’s Blaine’s turn to hesitate. “Actually…”
“What?” she screeches.
“Long story short he invited me to my first New Directions party, I had a little too much to drink, and I ended up in a spin the bottle game where I made out with one of his closest female friends.”
“Daddy!”
“I know,” Blaine sighs. “My great questioning phase happened after I came out. I’m an awful gay. And it pissed your dad off so much.”
“How’d you get over it?”
“I kissed her again--sober. And felt nothing.”
Sabrina take Blaine’s hand in hers. “Well I’m glad you straightened yourself out, pun intended.” She squeezes it and drops it to get off the couch. “I’m going to Kylie’s, okay?”
“What? No, not okay.” Blaine runs to the door to block it. “We haven’t discussed your punishment yet.”
“Daddy…”
“You’re grounded for the weekend. I should do longer but it’s spring break. Just promise me no more alcohol and no more boys in your room.”
“Daddy, I didn’t drink last night,” Sabrina protests.
“But you were at a party where it was served,” Blaine says. “And Jack was proof of that.”
Sabrina rolls her eyes. “Fine. No alcohol.”
“And no boys in your room.”
“Even if Jack and I have an English project after the break?”
Blaine nods. “I can’t control what happens up there.”
“Daddy, we’re just friends. We kissed a few times last year and that was it. No feelings.”
The way Sabrina fidgets as she says it makes Blaine know that isn’t the end of her feelings for Jack, and that he’ll likely be in the picture for a while. “Still, any work you do will be down here. Promise?”
She nods. “Promise.”
Blaine kisses her forehead. “Okay. Now go text Kylie before I take your phone.”
She takes her phone out of her pocket to fire the text off, then hands it over.
Blaine isn’t surprised to find Jack sprawled across the carpet when he comes home from work a few weeks later. As soon as spring break ended Sabrina made plans for their project and reiterated them to her dads. “Hey,” Blaine says as he takes her blazer off.
“Hi Daddy,” Sabrina replies, her eyes focused on the English book in her lap.
After checking on the other three and greeting Kurt he finally settles in his office with the door open. Before long there’s a knock on the door. “Excuse me, Mr. Anderson-Hummel?”
Blaine turns around in his chair. “You can call me Blaine, Jack. I know our last names are a bit of a mouthful together.”
Jack grins sheepishly. “My mom would probably disown me if I did that,” he says.
“Country club kid, huh?”
“Upper East Side. Let’s just say when I visit my grandparents I have to wear a wig,” Jack replies, pointing to his now aqua-hued locks. “But I wanted to thank you for your hospitality that morning. I can imagine it was a little awkward finding someone you’ve never met in your kid’s bed, especially after a night of drinking.”
Stifling a laugh, Blaine smiles. “It’s quite an experience.”
“You’re an incredible dad. If mine had found Abby--my ex, that’s her name--or even Sabrina they wouldn’t even have time to grab anything they brought before he threw them out. He thinks because I’m the youngest I need to be more sheltered than my siblings.”
Blaine is floored for a moment. That’s essentially how his own father treated him compared to Cooper, up until he came out. “Thank you, Jack,” he says. “I hate to hear about that though, because from what little I know about you you’re a great kid.”
“I also want to tell you that--well, I like Sabrina.”
Jack stares at Blaine in hopes of a reaction. “Okay?”
“And I would like your permission to take her to the movies on Friday night.”
Blaine inhales deeply. “Didn’t you just get out of a relationship?” he asks.
“We dated for two months,” Jack says. “It wasn’t serious. And I’ve always had a bit of a crush on Sabrina. Or something. It just came full-force after I got home.”
Blaine feels like he’s staring at his own doppelganger in Jack. Granted, it took him slightly longer after the drunken Rachel shenanigans to figure out his feelings for Kurt. “Her curfew is eleven,” he says. “And she’s been talking about going to that reboot of The Breakfast Club.”
“Awesome,” Jack smiles. “Thank you so much!”
“You’re welcome. I trust you with her, you know.”
“I won’t break your trust,” Jack says before he returns to the living room.
Blaine’s barely signed into NYU’s course site when Kurt comes in and leans on the desk. “So when should we start worrying about wedding invitations?”
He groans and drops his head on the desk. “Can we at least get through their inevitable first breakup?”
“As long as it’s only one and they don’t elope.” Kurt rubs his thumb across the back of Blaine’s neck. “I may not have planned our wedding, but I’ll be damned if I’m not allowed creative control over our little girl’s.”
“That may be enough for them to elope,” Blaine jokes.
Kurt huffs. “Fine. God, when did she grow up?”
“Some time in the past seventeen years.” He lifts his head up and stares at his husband. “And it’s only going to get worse with the other three.”
“We’ll make it,” Kurt says. “Just like we make it through everything. Just do me a favor?”
“Hmm?” Blaine hums.
“Don’t tell Jack about your proposal. That cannot be topped.”

🕯️🎈for the ask game!
🕯️how do you think engaging with each other through tumblr, twitter, comments, kudos, creates healthy fandom experiences? How do you deal with that if you’re not a social person/experience social anxiety?
I think it is important to find a space where you are happy and comfortable. They always say "curate your own fandom experience" and that is true. For years, I didn't really "put myself out there" as a writer, but ever since the pandemic I found my way to writing Discords or fandom Discords where others also write, like the CO Discord and The Lima Bean and The Second Breakfast Club. There are also great online initiatives like The Lima Bean (again) and I heard todaydreambelieversfic is making a comeback, and they also encourage writers to introduce themselves yada yada.
And even though I haven't engaged with some of these places in a while, I am always grateful for them because not only do they give me more confidence to put my stuff online (it used to be nerve-wrecking to tag someone for WW/SSS or put something in #self-promo), but it also gives a little community. And I think that is healthy. There is a fun feedback loop.
Like this, for example. I got some moots in my inbox. I woke up to several of these asks and I had a :D moment. At this point it's almost weird to me that I didn't have a little writing corner in my fandom space for years.
🎈describe your style as a writer; is it fixed? does it change?
I think it is fixed, but I do notice that I have a different style of writing for CO because there I mimick Rainbow's style (I don't think I'd ever write first person for any other fic). I do think I have improved, so there is change there. My worst sin is, that when I started out in 2013-2014, I didn't use paragraph breaks. There are some words and sentences that I use a lot, but after I saw a particular positive post about that, I am happy that I do that. (It used to make me anxious before, as in "am I too repetitive?")

The day Elizabeth (Lizzy) May Anderson-Hummel is born is the best day of their lives to date. ‘Their’ is in reference to not only Kurt and Blaine and their entire extended families (Burt Hummel weeps openly holding his granddaughter for the first time), but also Rachel and Jesse.
There’s no question the pair will don the monikers “Aunt” Rachel and “Uncle” Jesse as they’ve become like true brother and sister to Blaine and Kurt over the years. So while not only is Lizzy the first child born into their group of friends, Rachel and Jesse feel more connected to her than, say, if Artie and Tina were to have a child. They’ve never said as much openly but…being Jesse and Rachel? It’s been heavily implied.
Lizzy is spoiled from the start. Kurt and Blaine try to keep the spoiling to a minimum, because as Kurt tries to remind everyone “Spoiled children are nasty as children and even nastier as adults”, but even they can’t help but dote on their little girl.
The foursome’s monthly games nights turn into “Lizzy nights” where Jesse and Rachel come earlier than they used to and the four spend hours just playing with Lizzy before her bedtime.
Rachel and Jesse are there for a lot of Lizzy’s milestones. They’re there when she eats solids for the first time, when she takes her first steps,, and Kurt is on the phone with Rachel when Lizzy utters her first word.
By the time Lizzy is three, she’s as comfortable at Rachel and Jesse’s house as she is at home, and even starts to have sleepovers with the pair.
“These sleepovers will help prepare you two for parenthood.” Blaine jokes when the sleepovers start.
The joke makes them all laugh but none of them know how true Blaine’s statement is until four months later when Rachel announces that she’s pregnant.
Everyone is obviously thrilled with the news, even Lizzy who doesn’t completely understand what it means.
“Where’s the baby?” She asks, looking Rachel up and down as if expecting a baby to magically appear from behind her back.
Rachel smiles, “It’s in my tummy.” She explains, patting her still flat stomach.
The explanation seems to confuse Lizzy even more. But when Kurt and Blaine explain it will be like her baby dolls, she’s sold.
It becomes a little more clear to her as Rachel’s stomach grows and she spends a great amount of time with her ear to Rachel’s stomach, trying to ‘hear the baby’ as she puts it.
“Hey baby girl,” Kurt says, one night, as they are tucking Lizzy into bed, “Daddy and I have something to tell you.”
Lizzy sits nestled in her pink pillows and blankets and smiles up at her fathers sweetly, “What’s up?” She says, making Kurt and Blaine laugh.
“Well you know how Aunt Rachel is going to have a baby?” Blaine starts and Lizzy nods, “Well, how would you like it if…we had a baby join OUR family?”
Lizzy is quiet for a moment, looking back and forth between them, and Kurt and Blaine wonder if she really understands what Blaine said, “Do you understand, love?” Kurt asks, running a hand through her dark curls.
Lizzy nods, but she’s still looking back and forth between her fathers, “You can ask us any questions you like.” Blaine assures and that’s all it seems to take for Lizzy to voice her confusion.
“Do you have the baby in your tummy, Daddy? Or does Papa?” She asks, innocently.
Kurt and Blaine smile. They’ve got some more explaining to do.
— — —
Lizzy’s four years and four months when Nash Barbra St. James is born (“Barbra? You’re going to saddle the kid with Barbra?” Kurt says as he cradles the new bundle to his chest.
“Says Kurt ELIZABETH Hummel.” Rachel emphasizes.
Kurt turns up his nose and says haughtily, “It takes a fabulous person to pull off such a middle name.” He says.
“And my son is going to be fabulous.” Rachel defends.).
And fabulous he is. Nash is an incredibly happy baby who, from earlier than anyone thinks he should, has a smile for everyone. He has anyone he meets wrapped around his chubby little finger, and that includes Kurt and Blaine.
Who that DOESN’T include…is Lizzy.
“Come on, Lizzy Bear! We’re going to see baby Nash!” Blaine calls up the stairs.
“No, thank you!” Lizzy calls from her bedroom.
Kurt and Blaine turn and look at each other at the bottom of the stairs with furrowed eyebrows, “It's time to go, Lizzy!” Kurt tries, shrugging at Blaine.
“I’m gonna stay and play with my dolls.” Lizzy calls, simply.
“What is her deal?” Blaine asks.
Kurt shrugs, “I guess we’ll have to go upstairs and find out.”
Blaine pouts, “I wanted to AVOID going upstairs. Isn’t the point of her being four that she can come to US instead of the other way around?”
Kurt laughs, laying a hand on Blaine’s shoulder and propelling him up the stairs, “Come on, old man. It’ll give you practice for when we’ve got a newborn in the house.”
Lizzy’s cagey about her reasons for wanting to stay home and doesn’t seem to quite understand that regardless of her reasons, a four-year-old cannot stay home alone. Eventually they get her out the door (not without a few ‘Elizabeth May’s being thrown around) and over to Rachel and Jesse’s, assuming she’ll perk up when she’s there.
She doesn’t.
“He smells.” She says sullenly, standing next to the couch where Blaine cuddles Nash to his chest.
Blaine chuckles, “He smells like baby powder and amazingness.” He argues.
“He looks like a booger.” Lizzy mumbles.
Kurt and Blaine make eye contact over Lizzy’s head and Kurt, who is sitting next to Rachel, turns to look at her. Rachel’s face is a mixture of shock and confusion and she also looks like she’s about to cry but that could be pregnancy hormones still wreaking havoc.
An awkward silence ensues. No one really knows how to deal with this tension and Kurt and Blaine aren’t entirely sure how to approach their daughter’s attitude.
Luckily for all of them, Jesse comes to the rescue, intentionally or not, “I mean...he does kind of look like a booger.”
“Jesse St. James!” Rachel shrieks, indignantly, but everyone else in the room is too busy laughing, including Lizzy, the tension broken for the time being.
-- -- --
It turns out that the tension between Lizzy and Nash is apparently not one-sided. He may only be a few weeks old, but when they finally get Lizzy to agree to hold him for some pictures (for which she refuses to smile), Nash wails like his arm is being ripped off.
“He’s never made that sound before!” Rachel says, alarmed, picking Nash back up and pressing him to her chest. Within minutes Nash is calm again, cooing up at his mother.
“What if she’s like this with her own brother?” Blaine whispers on the way home. All the adults assumed Lizzy would eventually warm up to Nash as the night wore on. They were sorely mistaken.
Kurt glances in the the rearview mirror at a sleeping Lizzy and sighs, “We’re just going to have to sit down and talk with her about it. She’ll come around to Nash and she’ll love her baby brother.”
“Well she doesn’t really have a choice when it comes to either of those. It’s just whether or not we’re going to have to keep fighting with her about it.” Blaine sighs, resignedly.
Lizzy’s kicking her feet absently at the breakfast table the next morning, eating her cereal, when Kurt and Blaine sit down with their coffees on either side of her. They look at each other and then down at Lizzy, who seems oblivious to her fathers’ attention; she’s now bopping her head to music only she can hear.
“Lizzy?” Blaine asks and Lizzy looks up with her spoon still in her mouth, “Papa and I wanted to talk to you about Nash.” He starts.
Lizzy sighs as she puts her spoon back into her bowl and she seems older than her four years, “I don’t like Nash.” She says.
Kurt nods, “Can you tell us why?” He asks.
Lizzy shrugs, “He’s not like my dolls at all. You said it was going to be like my baby dolls but he’s not like that at all.”
Blaine sighs, “Well I’m sorry but that’s not really a reason to not like him. I think if you tried, you’d find that you actually really like Nash. He’s awfully cute.” Lizzy doesn’t seem convinced.
“At the end of the day, love, Nash is going to be in our lives for a very long time.” Kurt says gently, “So we need to be nice to him and treat him kindly. Okay?”
Lizzy sighs again and uses her spoon to move her cereal around her bowl absently, “Okay.” She says, softly.
Kurt and Blaine nod at each other, pleased.
-- -- --
As is often the case when children agree to something, especially when it comes to their behaviour, they renege on it almost as quickly as they agreed to it.
Over the coming weeks and months, Lizzy continues to have difficulties with her pseudo-cousin. She refuses to interact with him unless forced, she hides his toys, goes selectively deaf when someone asks her to help with him, and is generally sullen in his company.
Lizzy and Nash’s tense relationship causes a strain in Kurt, Blaine, Jesse, and Rachel’s relationship. They spend more time discussing their children’s relationship than anything else. Their game nights turn into strategy sessions for how to get their kids to get along.
They are continually baffled by the evident hatred from Lizzy and the perceived hatred from Nash (who continues to be unsettled and whiny in Lizzy’s presence despite being a generally positive baby boy).
“Hey! It’s almost baby time!” Rachel enthuses the day before the due date of Kurt and Blaine’s son, walking into their house (that she inexplicably has a key for even though neither Kurt or Blaine ever officially gave her one) with Nash’s carrier hooked in her arm.
“Ugh, don’t remind me.” Kurt grumbles.
Rachel’s smile crumbles into confusion as Blaine rolls his eyes and goes to take Nash out of his carrier. He settles Nash into his arm and bounces him slightly while tickling his tummy just to hear him giggle, “Kurt is stressing because he thinks Lizzy is going to hate her baby brother.” He explains.
“Well all evidence is pointing to the fact that she’s not a big fan of babies in the family.” Kurt argues, gesturing toward Nash, “Imagine what she’s going to do when there is a baby LIVING here.”
“She’ll be fine, Kurt.” Rachel soothes.
“That’s what I keep telling him.” Blaine says, kissing the four-month-old on the head before inhaling deeply, “Oh man I am SO excited to have another baby in the house. Why do babies always smell so good?” It’s a rhetorical question but no one is listening to him anyway.
“While I would love for Lizzy to like Nash more...” Rachel starts.
“Or at all.” Kurt interjects.
“...or at all, you can’t compare her feelings toward a baby that she sees once or twice a week, that isn’t related to her, to her baby brother.” Rachel finishes.
And while neither Kurt or Blaine will admit to Rachel being right, Lizzy absolutely adores her brother when Matthew (Matty) Devon Anderson-Hummel is born later that week. She refuses to let go of his hand when she visits him in the hospital, asks to hold him at every available opportunity, and even OFFERS to help care for him (though she does draw the line at dirty diapers).
Kurt, Blaine, Rachel, and Jesse all heave a giant sigh of relief at her reaction, assuming it means she will also begin to like Nash...
...well it’s not a HORRIBLE assumption…
“What are you doing, baby girl?” Kurt asks, one evening, two weeks after Matty is born, as they get ready to host Rachel, Jesse, and Nash for dinner. He finds Lizzy in the dining room setting out a plate in addition to the five Blaine had set out earlier.
“I’m putting a plate on the table for Matty.” Lizzy explains, simply.
Kurt smiles, “That’s sweet. You do know he’s too little to eat at the table though, right?” He says, gently.
Lizzy gives him what Kurt and Blaine have come to call her ‘bitch please’ look (that usually has them laughing when they probably should be telling her not to do it) and says, “I know that but he should still have a plate. He would feel sad without one.”
Kurt nods, “Fair point. What about Nash? Are you going to put out a plate for him too?”
Lizzy shakes her head, “No.” She says sweetly, “He can sit in the kitchen.”
Kurt’s eyes widen, “Lizzy, that’s not very nice.”
“Our table isn’t that big.” Lizzy says, matter-of-factly, before leaving the room.
Kurt watches her leave with an open mouth and confused eyes. He stands in shocked imbolility for a few moments before making his way to the kitchen to find Blaine.
Blaine’s taking the wine for the evening out of the fridge, Matty cradled in his arm, when Kurt comes in and lays his forehead on Blaine’s shoulder with an exaggerated groan, “Our daughter’s a bitch.” He says, sadly, bringing a hand up to stroke Matty’s curled up fist.
Blaine lets out a shocked huff of laughter, “Ummm wow. Explain please.” He says.
Kurt sighs and recounts his interaction with Lizzy. Blaine pouts his lips thoughtfully, “She’ll get over it.” Blaine says and whether he’s trying to reassure Kurt or himself he doesn’t know, “Maybe…” He muses as something occurs to him for the first time, “Maybe we’re looking at this the wrong way. What if Lizzy is having difficulty with Nash because he...took her spot?”
Kurt lifts his head up and furrows his brow at Blaine, “What do you mean?”
Blaine shrugs as much as he can with Matty in his arms, “Before Nash came along, Lizzy was not only our whole world, but Rachel and Jesse’s too. She had everyone’s full attention. But when Nash came along she had to share it.”
“Nash dethroned her.” Kurt says in awed realization.
“In her eyes, yeah. So her anger at being “dethroned” is directed at Nash as opposed to Matty.” Blaine finishes explaining.
“You’re so smart.” Kurt breathes, leaning down to kiss Blaine’s shoulder before resting his lips there.
Blaine chuckles, “I try.” He says, “Now comes figuring out how to help her get over it.” Kurt moves to put his chin on Blaine’s shoulder, “And just like parenting, I’m sure that will be a breeze of an experience.” He says before kissing Blaine’s cheek as the other man laughs.
-- -- --
Nash is almost three by the time he and Lizzy start to come around to each other. Leading up to that time, a highlight of their “burgeoning” relationship is Lizzy intentionally trying to trip Nash as he’s learning to walk.
“Good job, Nash!” Jesse exclaims holding Nash’s hand as the thirteen-month-old toddles his way around Kurt and Blaine’s living room. The little boy has been getting stronger and stronger each day with his walking and it’s probably only a matter of time before he’s walking completely on his own.
Lizzy’s sitting on the edge of the couch, digging her toes into the carpet, as she follows the pair with her eyes. When Nash gets close, she lets her toes slide against the carpet until they are blocking Nash’s legs, causing the little boy to stumble and then fall.
Jesse, whose head had been turned to answer something Kurt had asked, turns back when he feels the tug on his arm to watch Nash fall over Lizzy’s feet, “Lizzy!” Blaine scolds.
Another highlight includes Nash spitting food into Lizzy’s hair, which unfortunately happens more than once.
It’s his second birthday party when it happens for the first time. He’s hopped up on sugar and excitement and he’s been running around the house like a wild man for most of the day. Everyone at the party just laughs at his antics so he keeps them up.
He’s standing at the coffee table eating chips from a bowl and Lizzy is sitting on the floor next to the couch (with a scowl on her face because she has no interest in being at this birthday party). Without ceremony, Nash leans over and opens his mouth, full of Doritos, over the six-year-old’s head.
The orange mush lands on the crown of Lizzy’s head and she jerks at the sensation. She turns, bringing a hand up to feel her head, before shrieking when she realizes what must have happened.
“Nash!” Rachel scolds.
By the time Nash’s third birthday nears, both sets of parents are out of ideas. They’ve tried everything to get their kids to get along. Blaine and Kurt are blue in the face from the amount of talks they’ve had with Lizzy that always end in her fruitless agreement. They’ve tried timeouts, removal of property/privilege, and even, during a time of real desperation, bribery.
It gets so bad that the two families start decreasing the time they spend together. They go from meeting once a week, at least, to maybe once a month. It makes them sad but they just can’t seem to figure out how to make their kids like each other and their get-togethers are more stressful than not.
A couple of weeks before Nash turns three, the families go to the park together. They’ve discovered that not having the kids in a confined space lessens the arguments (which are epic despite the four year age difference. It’s like Nash’s dislike of Lizzy has overdeveloped his argument vocabulary).
Kurt, Blaine, Rachel, and Jesse are sitting on a bench as their children play: Lizzy is on the monkey bars and Nash and Matty are in the sandbox. The foursome have, unspokenly but mutually, decided that the fight between their children is a non-topic and they are actually really enjoying catching up.
Blaine notices it first as Lizzy jumps off the monkey bars and makes her way to the sandbox. He hits Kurt to get his attention and soon all four parents are watching, tensely, as Lizzy stands at the edge of the box.
They watch as Lizzy looks between Matty and Nash a few times before she shrugs and sits between them. The seven-year-old picks up a shovel and scoops a heaping pile of sand onto it. Both Matty and Nash are holding buckets but it’s Nash she turns to. She wordlessly offers the pile to him and he looks at her for a second before holding out his bucket to her.
She smiles at him and lets the sand in her shovel pour slowly into his bucket. He smiles back before going back to dumping sand into the bucket himself.
For the next ten minutes, the parents look on in awe as Lizzy, Matty, and Nash play pleasantly in the sandbox together - not a single bad thing happens.
And from then on things between the Anderson-Hummels and the St. James’ settle down. There is no evidence of past animosity as Lizzy treats both Matty and Nash like her little brothers and Nash takes to Lizzy like they had always hoped he would.
Kurt and Blaine are tucking Lizzy into bed one night, a few months later, when Kurt mentions as casually as he can, “Hey, love, Daddy and I have noticed you’ve been playing with Nash a lot more lately.” Lizzy nods, “That’s awesome,” He praises, “but we were just wondering what changed. You weren’t his biggest fan for a long time.”
Lizzy shrugs as she snuggles into bed, “He’s not so bad. I didn’t want to fight with him anymore. I have bigger problems to deal with now anyway.” She says.
Blaine’s eyes widen, “What bigger problems are those?” He asks.
Lizzy sighs, “Meghan in my class likes Nolan but *I* like Nolan.” She explains.
Kurt and Blaine stare at their daughter for a second before they turn to each other with wide, panicked eyes. This is the first time Lizzy has mentioned anything like this. They figured drama like this would be years away. They can’t help but wonder if they wouldn’t prefer her to go back to squabbling with her pseudo-cousin…
