Tanz der Vampire St. Gallen - Cast Review
And here is my final St. Gallen post for now. Here I talk about the cast and how they performed the new versions of their characters. Once again, there might be spoilers for the people who haven’t seen the St. Gallen production yet. If you wish to remain unspoiled, turn away immediately. Everyone else, let’s go :D
Graf von Krolock - Thomas Borchert
I kinda grew tired of seeing Thomas perform Krolock everywhere. He’s a great Krolock and has a very fitting deep voice for the character, but I would also like to see something new. I also had the impression that he grew bored with the role...oh boy, was I surprised! Thomas takes a completely different approach to Modern!Krolock than he does with Classic!Krolock. While his take on Classic!Krolock is that of a cold, bored and untouchable vampire lord, Modern!Krolock is completely different. In fact, this was my favourite Krolock rendition done by Thomas. Because in St. Gallen he acts like he actually gives a damn! This Krolock is much more grounded, much more human and much more emotional. During Gott ist tot he angrily looks up at the sky and almost seems like he’s saying “Why did you die and leave us here?” During the end of Totale Finsternis, he looks at Sarah like he’s feeling compassion towards her and doesn’t actually want to bite her in this very moment. And then comes Die unstillbare Gier. He starts off quiet, clearly remembering his human days. Later he howls and screams in utter despair and by the end, he looks like he’s just pissed off with this world and humanity in general. A much more layered Krolock here, and definitely Thomas’ best performance of him in my opinion. This Krolock actually seems like he’s trying to give a damn and fight the vampire inside him. Bravo Thomas, I salute you!
Sarah - Mercedesz Csampai
I have also seen Mercedesz as Sarah before when I was watching the show in Berlin. I liked her Sarah. She is one of the Sarahs who you actually believe to be only 17 years old. And like Thomas, she plays Modern!Sarah different to Classic!Sarah. Here, she knows about the vampires and dreams of being bitten by Krolock. She knows what she wants and will do all to get it. She has no interest in Alfred here AT ALL. In fact, she even seems annoyed with him at some point. She has dreamt of this ball and knows she will get bitten. She is the perfect example of a teenager being lured in by false promises. Some of the higher notes don’t come off as clean unfortunately, but in a way this make her 17-year old role even more believable.
Alfred - Tobias Bieri
I really like this Alfred! He has a good voice and doesn’t look like the typical fragile boy. This Alfred comes across as a bit more masculine. But boy, does he not know how to talk to women. Du bist wirklich sehr nett feels extremely awkward, with Alfred completely lost and Sarah manipulating him to give her the bathroom. But later he also seems very passionate about finding and rescuing Sarah, he clearly has feelings for her. A very good take on Alfred. I would love to see him play him in the classic version.
Professor Abronsius - Sebastian Brandmeir
The BIGGEST surprise of the evening! Before this, Gernot Kranner was my favourite Abronsius. Now he shares the spot with Sebastian. This man is FANTASTIC as Abronsius. He is passionate about what he’s doing, really comes across as smart but also very easily to distract, but also...he genuinely cares for Alfred. A lot of the professors I have seen treat Alfred as an unimportant sidekick...not this guy. The chemistry between him and Tobias was wonderful! They worked perfectly with each other. And boy, AM I GLAD that he became First Cast Abronsius for the Vienna production. He so deserves it! He even got more applause than Thomas as Krolock. Abronsius getting more applause than Krolock is something I have never ever seen before. This alone should demonstrate how goo Sebastian is!
Chagal - Jerzy Jeszke
You can’t go wrong with Jerzy! He was a great Chagal in the classic production and he is a great Chagal here. Modern!Chagal seems a bit more careless and stiff about his daughter, which Jerzy demonstrates pretty well. However, it’s not his fault, but Chagal wasn’t really the highlight for me this evening. But Jerzy did a great job as always and I was glad to see him again!
Magda - Sanne Mieloo
Another big surprise! She had easily one of the best voices. She was also probably one of the tallest people onstage. This Magda is much more vicious and careless. She laughs at Chagal’s dead body, is very sarcastic and acts like a total predator as Vampire!Magda. Definitely a unique and interesting take on the character. I think she even has played Magda in the classic production before. I think she deserves getting another first cast in this role, this woman is amazing.
Herbert - Christian Funk
A much more masculine and aggressive Herbert. He wants Alfred, and he is going to get him. But he also has excellent comedic timing, making the audience love him even more. When Alfred says “The son!” in the crypt, he makes a gesture like he wants to say “Oh my, is he talking about me?” A great Herbert with a great voice and I am glad he gets to play him in the Tour version right now. He deserves it.
Rebecca - Anja Wessel
Not really a big highlight. But that’s because Rebecca is such a small role. But Anja uses whatever she has to get the most out of it. I really do appreciate that. She definitely has a unique Rebecca look, not seeming like a cartoon. This Rebecca is a bit closer to the Finnish version, where she also looks like a normal woman.
Koukol - Thomas Huber
Great Koukol! Thomas has the big advantage that this Koukol isn’t masked away by tons of facial make-up. He can really show his expressions in the scenes and yeah, he does! He also communicates with the other characters more than in the classic version. A great addition to the cast!
Nightmare Solo 1 - Christoph Apfelbeck
What a surprise! I saw him as Artus in “Artus - Excalibur” before, and he was great in this! And he also has a very fitting voice for the Carpe Noctem solo. I was really glad when I found out he joined the Vienna Cast of the 20th Anniversary where he will in addition also cover Herbert. Now that should be interesting!
Nightmare Solo 2 - Philip Hägeli
I can’t really get warm with his singing style. I definitely know that many people sing like this, especially in modern rock songs, but I personally had a throat ache every time he opened his mouth. I really hope he goes back to his former singing style, which is much more open and pure. I know, many like this style, but not my cup of tea.
So yeah, the cast for St. Gallen was pretty solid! Everyone did a great job and if I could see this very cast in the classic production, this would be amazing!

A movement that began with a single teenager distributing homemade fliers outside the Swedish parliament last summer became a global phenomenon on Friday, as students worldwide skipped school and took to the streets to urgently demand that adults combat the perils of climate change. Starting in the South Pacific and moving west with the sun, the protests blanketed grand city centers and humble village squares. Organizers said they were expecting demonstrations in at least 112 countries, in more than 1,700 locations. The coordinated demonstrations were planned as the largest manifestation to date of the Fridays for Future movement, in which students forgo classes each week in favor of something they have said is more important: pleading for action on an issue that will affect every person on the planet, but young people most of all. Judas Iscariot (Timothy Roller) Theatre Magdenburg Jesus Christ Superstar Production 2018
Costume designer: Sebastian Ritschel
Jesus: Tobias Bieri (will appear again in future post)
Costume Notes: Denim Judas! From what I can tell he wears the denim for most of the show and switched to the leather for “Last Supper.” I think his shoes stay the same for the costume switch though I don’t know about Superstar (though I think his black boots work for Superstar so I doubt they would have changed the shoes). His “Superstar” look is just a black sparkly old military-uniform-esque look with golden details.
Production Notes: I think the replacement Judas or Understudy was Christopher Brose (not featured in any photos), who will appear in a later post in the role of Jesus (Theatre Mainfranken).
Short clips of Roller singing available in the YouTube video “Teaser Offener Kanal Magdeburg zum DomplatzOpenAir Magdeburg 2018“ Show clips are also available in the show trailer on YouTube as well.
