Eurovision 2004 - Number 40 - Itchycoo - "Super Mega Nova"

Fresh from Gothenburg's Academy of Music and Drama, three successful singles in 2003, and a break-through in Germany are Itchycoo. They are singer Mia Bergström and guitarist Tobias Gustavsson. They formed Itchycoo after failing to find success with previous bands and, having known each other from Gothenburg's Academy, try to make a go of it as a duo.

Success happened and the next logical success for a pop band in Sweden having a breakthrough year is obviously Melfest. Super Mega Nova is tale of seeking success at any cost, up to and including naked bike riding. For a newish band looking to strike it big, it's uncertain how much of this is autobiographical. At least in the final verse, the realisation dawns that sacrificing your soul for stardom has some drawbacks. The driving pop of the song is scaled back as regret takes hold.

That uncertainty as to whether this new band really would do these things adds an edgy element. It raises a question as to how self-centred this band might be, how much do they really want to be the main characters of Melfest itself. The track is fun, well produced, and is the quintessential pop-rock that normally gets lapped up at Melfest. Yet Super Mega Nova could only take Itchycoo to seventh place of eight songs in Heat 3, a significant number of votes away from even making it to second chance final.

This was their only time at Melfest or indeed any national final. The future lay largely in Germany having made a splash at the 2003 SW3 New Pop Festival beating Daniel Bedingfield and Skin to the newcomers award. Alas their German success didn't last long, they split up in 2005. Tobias went on to join other rock bands, but his main achievement was winning a Swedish Grammy award in 2009 for co-writing Swedish number one hit Jennie Let Me Love You.

We chatted to Nestor vocalist Tobias Gustavsson about their new album, Teenage Rebel and the work that went into making it a reality. We also spoke about their creative progression, not looking to write ‘Kids in a Ghost Town’ Part 2, their ever-increasing popularity, having fun making this music, and so much more.

Nestor - Teenage Rebel

Nachdem Nestor 1989 gegründet wurden und drei Jahrzehnte lang im Winterschlaf lagen, kehrten sie 2021 mit ihrem Debütalbum "Kids in a Ghost Town" stärker denn je ins Rampenlicht zurück und begeisterten die Fans mit ihrem zeitlosen Sound und ihrer unvergleichlichen Energie. Das neue Album "Teenage Rebel" beginnt mit einem fesselnden Intro-Monolog, gesprochen von der dänischen Synchronsprecherin Freya Miller, der eine rebellische Retro-Atmosphäre schafft, die auf das Album einstimmt und die Bühne für den Eröffnungstrack "We Come Alive" bereitet - ein wahrer Knaller als Opener. THE DAGGER is a hard rock/ heavy metal band from Stockholm, Sweden formed in 2009 by Fred Estby (drums), David Blomqvist (guitars), Tobias Cristiansson (bass) and Erik "Tyrant" Gustavsson, who are or have previously been involved in bands such as DISMEMBER, GRAVE or NECRONAUT. After auditioning several possible singers and seeing Tyrant exiting the band, Jani Kataja (MANGROVE, SIDEBURN) joined the fold as vocalist by the end of 2012.  Sitting here and listening to the debut of this fresh new band with the old-school vibes I become quite excited because the retro...ness (yeah I invented that word) feels quite natural and the music really sounds fucking awesome, just like a really great old underground band I just discovered just to tell everyone about them and trade tapes and shit... listening to THE DAGGER I get a very DEEP PURPLE-ish feeling, sometimes reminding me of RAINBOW and sometimes of JUDAS PRIEST. Jani`s voice is hard to describe but it has much of Ian Gillan with some touch of Rob Halford (you have to hear it, it is quite fitting to this already awesome outfit). The overall musical approach is very epic and classic, very much in the style of 70`s hard rock of the bands mentioned above. It seems like a wonder but at first I want to mention that I can hear the bass!!! It is a fringing miracle of epic proportions! I hear the bass and it sound good (it doesn`t take centre stage but it is definitely there to be heard among the other instruments and it really adds to the picture), the guitar is fine too with the right sound to let a riff sound really heavy (SABBATH heavy), the drumming is un-intrusive but very effective and the vocals are just that one thing that would be missing would someone else sing these songs. När tittarna bänkar sig till den sista deltävlingen tror de att de har sett det mesta. Men redan det första bidraget kommer att få dem att spärra upp ögonen.

Nummerkreatören Fredrik ”Benke” Rydman har skapat ett nummer som reda på dagens repetition backstage får produktionen att mysa. Det kliar i fingrarna på erfarna medarbetare att få presentera i det här i tv. ”Benke” låg bakom Mohombis nummer tidigare i år och skapade Måns Zelmerlöws Eurovisionvinnande scenshow 2015.

Många effekter tillkommer på scen, men redan i dag får vi se dansarnas och sångerskan Arvens Latours scenkläder. Dansarna har stora handskar med inbyggda kryckor som förlänger armarna och ändrar den mänskliga anatomin. Samtidigt har de primitiva masker på huvudets ovansida och utför en brutal och djurisk koreografi.

I numrets andra del gör de sig av med masker och kryck-handskar.

– Jag har haft en idé om fyrfotaprincipen, att bli ett djur, och att arbeta med kryckor. Det passade bra in i det här numret, med sina naturteman, säger Benke, som skapat numret.

Med sångerskan Arven på scenen finns alltså dansare och inte bandmedlemmar.

– Vi är ett band egentligen, men eftersom man inte spelar live i Melodifestivalen kände vi att vi inte ville ta in våra musiker, så vi gjorde det här i stället, säger Arven.

– ”Stormbringer” är en kraftig, mäktig känsla som skingrar det mörka och släpper in ljuset. Låten handlar om att växa upp och hitta rätt väg. Det är folkmetal med rockinfluenser: gitarrbaserat, tunga riff och bra riv. Men även även folkmusik-inslag som fiol och mungiga.

Budskap:

– Ibland behövs det en storm för att skingra mörkret och låta ljuset flöda. Förändring kan vara bra. Ur kaos föds kreativitet. Vi ska inte vara rädda för att låta stormen ta lite plats, för det kan komma något gott ur den.

Natural Disasters official expansion launches

Paradox Interactive, a publisher of games* (this asterisk indicates disaster risk). The new expansion for Cities: Skylines from developer Colossal Order. Hence the expansion is titled “Natural Disasters,” now available for Cities: Skylines players. Consequently released to all digital retailers worldwide for Linux, Mac and Windows PC's for $14,99 / £10,99 / EUR €14,99. The new expansion adds a calamitous collection of new features to Cities: Skylines. Including new systems for disaster alerts and response. And of course the disasters themselves. While they can occur randomly. Or triggered deliberately by monstrous mayors who have never liked their citizens. The game has also been updated today with a free Scenario Editor. Allowing all players to design custom game objectives and share their scenarios via Steam Workshop. 2018 World Juniors rosters and key players to watch

The tournament begins Tuesday in Buffalo.

If you needed a warmup to get into international hockey before the 2018 Winter Olympics, the best young players in the world will have you covered at the 2018 World Junior Championship tournament. The United States will be looking to defend its title on home ice in Buffalo after a thrilling victory in Montreal a year ago.

The World Juniors is an annual under-20 tournament featuring junior national teams full of top prospects. It’s a great chance to watch some extremely gifted players in an intense competition as they represent their countries. Even if it’s not quite star-studded like an NHL-backed Olympic tournament would be, the talent level will be high.

And for NHL fans, the tournament is always a stellar opportunity to keep up with the future of the game. Many of the players in Buffalo will go on to become NHL stars. If you want to get a leg up on your friends when discussing the 2018 draft, then following the World Juniors is a good place to start.

With that in mind, here’s a quick look at every team competing in the 2018 World Juniors, along with a key player to watch on each roster. NHL rights are included in parenthesis.

There are a lot of must-see talents on Team USA, including Mittelstadt, Norris, and Yamamoto, but Hughes stands out because you’ve probably never seen him before. The University of Michigan star is a top prospect for the 2018 NHL Draft, and projects as a possible top-five pick. He’s undersized but makes up for it with amazing skating and puck handling. This will be the first chance for a lot of fans to see him up close, which should be exciting.

Team Canada lacks the usual star power you’d expect from the world’s biggest hockey powerhouse, but it’s still a solid roster full of top prospects. Thomas, the No. 20 overall pick in the 2017 draft, stands out given his scorching start in the OHL. The versatile center has 46 points in 27 games for the London Knights after averaging a point per game last season.

Get ready to hear his name over and over. Rasmus Dahlin. It’s a great name for a prospect so talented he’s like the Connor McDavid of defensemen. Dahlin already has a treasure trove of ridiculous highlights on YouTube and he doesn’t turn 18 until April. The consensus projected No. 1 overall pick for the 2018 NHL Draft is a special prospect, and he’ll be a leader for Sweden despite being one of the youngest players on the team. Expect this to be a fun precursor to his leading role in Pyeongchang before he makes his NHL debut next fall.

Russia

There’s little doubt who will be the star player for Russia in Buffalo. Svechnikov is widely expected to be the first forward selected in the 2018 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old has 14 goals in 16 games with the OHL’s Barrie Colts this season, and could be a prime contender to lead the tournament in scoring if Russia can make a deep run. Between Dahlin, Svechnikov, and Hughes, you’ll potentially be able to see the top three draft picks for next year.

Finland

The Heiskanen hype train rolls into Buffalo this week. The Stars’ 2017 first-round pick is already playing a starring role in Finland’s top league at age 18 and will likely be the country’s top defenseman for the 2018 Winter Olympics in February. Heiskanen has elite-level NHL upside, and this will be his first chance to put it all on display for a North American audience.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic boasts a pair of 2017 first-round picks in Chytil and Necas, but its best player may be Zadina, the 2018 draft-eligible prospect who projects as a potential top-five pick. He’s been adjusting to the North American game this season with 46 points in 32 games in the QMJHL, and NHL.com gives him a (likely unreasonable) comparison to Patrick Kane. This could be a breakout opportunity for the 18-year-old.

Denmark

One of just two Golden Knights prospects in the tournament, Rondbjerg will also likely be Denmark’s best player. The 2017 third-round pick is already playing a steady role with the Vaxjo Lakers in the SHL, Sweden’s top league, as an 18-year-old. He has seven points in 25 games this season.

Slovakia

Part of the dying breed of big-bodied power forwards, Ruzicka might’ve gone higher than No. 109 overall in the 2017 draft if he had been playing this well a year ago. The 6’4, 203-pound winger has a team-leading 20 goals and 142 shots on goal in 34 games for the OHL’s Sarnia Sting. He’ll be leaned on heavily on the power play for a team looking to improve upon last year’s eighth-place finish.

Belarus only has one player whose rights are held by an NHL team, so it’s not difficult to pick which player to focus on. Sushko, the Flyers’ 2017 fourth-round pick, is a talented winger with 16 goals in 28 games for the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack this season. He’s not going to get much help in Buffalo, but he’s worth keeping an eye on.

Switzerland

Switzerland is a candidate for relegation by the end of this tournament, and its lack of potential NHL talent is a bit reason why. Nico Hischier is no longer around to carry this group, which finished seventh a year ago. The one guy who stands out is Geisser, a 2017 fourth-round pick by the Capitals who brings a ton of size (6’4, 201 pounds) and a big shot to the table.
