This is Centurian Toad. It has been in the same spot every night for 2 weeks. Not to judge, but I think she is pregnant.

Finding information about pregnant common toads is surprisingly difficult. There is a lot of cross information between frogs and toads. It is very frustrating.

No other toads have ventured across the deck to the toad house since she started hanging out there. Clearly she is a bad ass. I dig that.

Found this little wormy in my garden bed. It was curled up on the soil next to a tomato plant. Shockingly, the garden bed was completely surrounded by netting, so I'm not sure how it got in! Very crafty little guy... Other plants in the bed included a jalapeno pepper, cilantro, and basil. I couldn't find any damage on any of the plants. I tried looking up what kind of bug it was, but I couldn't come up with a solid answer. Possibly a cutworm or armyworm of some sort?

I placed the caterpillar in my nearby native plant garden bed, so I hope it's not invasive!

Yup looks like a noctuid caterpillar! So that includes armyworms and cutworms. I'm afraid I can't narrow it down more! But they do burrow in soil, so it may have gone under the netting. And most of them will feed on a wide variety of plants.

@texas-toadhouse submitted: I want to attract wasps to my yard this spring. Paper wasps in particular - they're my favorite kind of bug! I looked up something like "how to attract wasps to your garden" a while ago and found this. Is the flower color bit true?

It is true, yes. I don't know if it's true across the board for ALL species, but a lot of bees and wasps can't see the color red. That doesn't mean red flowers wouldn't be visited at all, though! They can still see ultraviolet light and smell the delicious nectar :)
