X-Men ‘97 episode 1x3 thoughts! Just wanted to elaborate a bit on some of the stuff we saw in Madelyne’s hellscape, namely the nightmare visions for Gambit and Morph, since it feels like there’s some room to interpret with those two as compared to the other members that have had their inner conflicts explored a bit already or are pretty straightforward.
With Gambit, the vision of Rogue and Magneto does seem to go beyond ‘the woman I love is hooking up with another man’ and hits at some deeper insecurity about himself and his character. The vision of Rogue is calling him out as not a good person, not a worthy person, at least not compared to Magneto. It seems like deep down, Gambit does feel an admiration for Magneto despite their previous status as enemies; he’s convicted, he’s a leader, he’s a savior of mutants, and some part of Gambit ranks himself as lesser by comparison, just a ‘nasty, thieving critter’. Magneto is a hero, and by implication, Gambit is not. That’s kinda sad to think about, since Gambit has helped save the world multiple times at this point and has made plenty of selfless actions in the process, but he has always held himself at a bit of a remove from the team and the cause they’re fighting for. Maybe that’s finally starting to get to him, or maybe has always bugged him on some level but his difficulties with trust have never let him overcome that self-enforced distance. If this is laying the groundwork for some sort of character arc, one where Gambit does seek to become more of what he sees as a worthy man, more of a hero, and whether or not that takes a positive or negative trajectory for him, I’m super interested to see it.
As for Morph... Listen, I've been making Morph x Wolverine jokes just like everyone else, they've been Like That since the OG series, but at this point I'm genuinely and seriously sure that Morph is in love with Logan and that's the core of their nightmare vision. Sure, the obvious terror fuel is their Sinister-based trauma, but listen to what Sinister said to them and the context in which he said it: They just left a conversation where they, Logan, and Gambit were discussing relationship woes, and after Logan ditched them to go check on Jean, they looked bummed and said "and then there was Morph." Left alone. Then the visions start, and Morph gets a very naked Logan posing sexily in the shower. Sure they try to make a very "boys in the locker room" sort of joke out of it, but come on Morph, there is no heterosexual explanation (and I do not say that lightly) for going to bug your buddy in the shower by offering to help him with "hard to reach spaces." Then the Sinister quote: "Always with the jokes, eh, Morph? As if I don't know. As if we ALL don't know." I genuinely think Morph is mega gay for Wolverine and is trying to hide it from everyone badly. They may all be mutants, but it is still the 90s, and just because they all have being a mutant in common with each other doesn't mean they're all on the same page in terms of queerness. Again, if this is the case, it's sad to think about. At this point in the animated canon, Morph and Wolverine make FAR more sense as a pairing than Logan and Jean ever did. Logan never gave up on Morph after they were brainwashed in the OG series, went to the literal ends of the earth to bring them back home, so it's no wonder if Morph caught Big Feelings about it but is scared to actually be honest about them.

You know what would be really cute? The boys teasing Percy about his crush on reader. Telling him he should teach her how to shoot so he’d have an excuse to wrap his arms around her. Bonus would be the girls teasing reader.
writers block rn, so sorry

"No way! You're totally into them! PfffHAAHHA!" Scanlan cackled loudly at the ex-noble, bending over and holding his stomach.
"That- that is absurd. Where on earth did you find that assumption?" Percy's face dusted with blush, swinging his head to the side, avoiding eye contact.
Vax's eyes swayed between the two men in the room, cogs slowly turning in his head. His lips curved into a smile, evidently holding back his laughter.
"You just realized Scanlan? Percy stares at them with heart eyes whenever they're in his view!" Vax stifles a giggle, looking over to Percy, waiting for his reaction.
Percy glares at Vax, still red and embarrassed.
"That.. that is not true." He sighed out slowly, giving up denying it after the statement.
"Yeah right Percival." Vax patted his shoulder, laughing. He pulled Percy down with the weight of his lean, and Percy tumbled forward, but regained his balance by tugging back on the slightly shorter man.
Scanlan wiggles his thick eyebrows and smirks upwards at Percy.
"So whats your first move gonna be lover boy? You gonna wrap your arms around them romantically under the stars or something?" Scanlan mocked and choked a laugh after looking at Vax's growing smile.
"Thats- not exa-"
"Percy! You should do that.. when will we ever get a better chance to fix their aim and for you to make a move?" Vax pulled Percy down to level with Scanlan as they discussed what they planned to make Percy do.
"No. I am not doing that, Vax." Percy pulled away from their circle, stunned.
"Percy," Scanlan piped up. "Trust me, as a man whose slept with like, a million women, this is the perfect way."
Both Vax and Scanlan had evil smiles on their faces, visibly hiding their laughter.
Percy stood up tall, and turned. Vax pushed him forward.
"Don't mess it up!" Vax snickered, watching as Percy hurriedly walked away.

You sat at a table with the rest of the girls. All of the chitchatting about what color goes with what item, what tea was better, and why we should probably keep a closer eye on Grog. (He got in the cookie jar.)
You let out a sigh as you day dreamed about what life would be like if you hadn't joined Vox Machina. Your mind settled on a life in a farm, caring for various animals and crops. You obviously decided you were glad you joined Vox Machina. Such a mundane life was not your style.
Keyleth's head turned to you, and you felt her eyes burn into the side of your head, as you stared into space. You could almost smell smoke from how hard she was looking at you.
"Hm?" You turned to Keyleth, asking her to explain why she was looking at you.
"Something on your mind?"
You now felt the rest of the table's eyes on you, including Grog's. (Who was now sat in a corner for eating the cookies.)
"You know who is really cute?" You smiled, waiting for Keyleth to offer you to continue.
"Who?" Keyleth purrs out curiously, entertaining your statement.
"Percy."
"What? Really? I thought you would have totally said some kind of Noble or something." Keyleth rested her head to her fist, thinking about what you just said.
"He is a noble, Keyleth?" You giggled at her interpretation of Percy. It is easy to forget your close friends are something more when you feel afloat around them.
Pike laughed at your correction.
"Wow, you just know so much about Percy, that's a little creepy if you ask me." Pike giggled out.
"Everyone knows that, though!" You insist, but Pike keeps laughing, calming herself to say one more thing.
"Not Keyleth, though." She started laughing again, Vex following in suit.
Vex looked at you with a smile. See, unknowing to you, she had discussed with Vax in the past on how to get the two of you together.
"Say, why don't you just ask Percy for aim training? You do need it anyways."
You glanced at her with the side of your eye.
"Actually, I don't. But that'd be so embarrassing! What if he holds me or something?"
Vex laughed- "Thats exactly why you should do it! Don't you think that'd just fulfill your little romantic imagination?"
"Aww! That'd be so cute!" Keyleth purred out, smiling like the sun.
"It's not just an imagination, Vex.." You spoke, deflation shown in your voice.
"Then prove it to me, darling." Vex stood from her chair, walking to you, and pulling you out of your's.
You sighed, holding her hand in your's, and looking up to her waiting for her to tell you she was joking. When she didn't respond, you let go of her hand, and walk out of the room to the hall. You fix your posture and take a deep breath.
You march down the hall, occasionally trailing your fingers against the windowsill's ridges. Your shoes clicked against the wooden floor as the wind picked up out side, pushing the curtains inside, flown toward you.
Pushing them out of the way, you walk directly into Percy.
Percy, who is apparently sick, had a red face as he apologized rapidly.
"Oh- I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there." Percy spat out.
"It's okay! I was actually just looking for you." You smile, looking up to him.
"And why would that be?"
"Well, Vex was making fun of my aiming record, and I was wondering if you could help me out because you are the only other person here with a gun?"
Percy laughed, realizing Vex and Vax had set the two of you up.
"Well, I don't quite see why not."
Walking closely by your side, the two of you make a turn down the hallway into the courtyard so he can help you practice aim.
"Why do they look untouched, Percy? Do you secretly suck at aiming?" You giggled, glancing towards him.
"No, I'm just so good at aiming that I never need to practice." He smiled at you, obviously mocking your attempt to poke fun at you.
"Yeah right. You totally suck."
He flicked you in the head and you stumbled, falling behind him. Walking to position you in front of the unmoving target, he puts his hand out to you.
"Well? Where's your pistol?"
Your mouth opened to an 'O' shape, reaching to your pocket and handing him the gun.
He spins the small pistol in his hands, inspecting it.
He stands behind you, towering over your body. His lengthy arms reach to yours, snaking into your hands. He places the pistol into your hand, and reaches for your other hand, placing them together and putting the correct grip on the gun.
"What you want to do is make sure that your right hand is being braced by your left. If you don't, you might as well just be trying to break your wrist. Your right hand needs to stay on the trigger's loop when you're not firing. When you do pull the trigger, make sure you grip tightly on your right hand with your left to avoid dropping the gun."
(A/N - Don't trust my gun advice. I am not a professional, and this is all a guess. All fiction. Not true.)
All you could think about was how close he was to you at the moment. His chest pressed to your back, and his arms wrapped around you gripping the gun with you. He braces your arm as he aims for you.
"See that little line? On the pistol? Thats the line of where your bullet is gonna go. Go ahead and try to hit that target. If anything goes wrong, I will be right behind you to help direct you."
Percy's left hand rested on your hip, and you felt his stare.
You fired, and missed.
"What went wrong?" You spoke with a frown.
His left hand moved from your hip to your shoulder, patting you softly.
"Just your aim was off. Try aiming a little lower."
His right hand moves upward, lowering your arms so it lines up more with the head of the hay-bale target.
You fire again, and this time it hit.
You cheered, happily doing a small dance about the fact you hit a target from such a distance.
"There we go. We'll only be here for a few hours with that kind of luck." Percy laughed at you, watching your posture slouch slightly at the realization that you have to aim practically all day.
Totally not because you're gonna be held by your crush all day long.

Bruce warns Hulk that after the Avengers have caught the escaped prisoners, they’ll turn on him. Meanwhile, Hank Pym works on his prototype Ultron head and Jan moves into the Avengers Mansion.
The Enchantress prowls the Mansion, hexing JARVIS, and assumes Bruce Banner's form. JARVIS issues a warning to Thor that an intruder is interfering with the security, and Thor suggests that Hulk and he patrol the Mansion. Hulk leaves in a huff, and Pepper convinces Thor to go after him to bring him back. Thor and Hulk fight in Central Park.
Nick Fury speaks with Stark about the team and says supports Avengers but people are uneasy with super-powered heroes. Tony is dubious about Fury's claims suspecting Shield really just wants more control in the situation.

Hulk and Banner discuss the Hulk's existence. Hulk rejoins the battle to save Giant-Man. Enchantress fails to regain control of the Hulk and is defeated. but the Executioner manages to escape with her unconscious body by using his powers to manipulate time and space.
After the fight, the Hulk quits, claiming that the Enchantress was right. He leaps away, and the Avengers return to the mansion. The Black Panther is keeping a watchful eye on the mansion. Meanwhile, the Hulk heads towards the Arctic north where Captain America's shield is shown to be trapped in the ice.
Well, I really like this episode. Everyone has been introduced and the team has been formed so so it the characters can finally lean back a bit and interact with each other.
I really love the contrast between Janet and Hank, with Janet's enthusiasm for being a hero and Hank's but science tho. They're both really adorable in this.
This is weird to say but the Hulk and Bruce also have an interesting relationship in this with Hulk animosity but also trust in Bruce. Bruce basically is Hulk's conscience. Unlike the movies these two can interact with each other which adds an interesting element.
Amora get to be pretty cool in this episode. Showing that she is just as sneaky and cunning as the best of them and she gets to use her magic in a fun way in the fight.
Turn of the Rogue written by Greg Johnson and Rick Ungar
The X-men are training in the Danger Room when to Cyclop's surprise he finds that Rogue is part of the simulation. He stops the program and asks Xavier why he added Rogue to the training simulation, Xavier tells him that he added her as an element of surprise, something they will need to get used to on their missions. Scott later tells Jean he doesn't like using Rogue's images as an enemy because he still thinks there is a chance that Rogue may join their side. Mystique overhears their conversation and Darkholme informs Rogue of what happened and tells her that their no chance that the X-men would ever truly want to befriend her.
Later, Jean and Scott were preparing for a school trip, but Darkholme manipulated things to make Jean lose her spot, and Rogue took her place instead. While they were riding the bus, heavy snow caused it to skid off the road and come to a halt. Rogue then suggested riding snowmobiles to caves during the storm, and she even challenged Scott to a race. The teacher gives a geology lecture to students in a cave. Rogue wanders off, followed by Scott. She asks what he wants. He wants to be friends. She demands the truth, asks if she's a target for the X-Men, and mentions the battle simulation with her as the enemy. Scott says she's been lied to and can join them. She refuses and starts to leave. A student approaches, revealing themself as Mystique. She taunts them, shoves Scott off a ledge, and tells him that Xavier is hiding the truth. Rogue confronts Mystique, demanding no more secrets. She uses her power to see Mystique's memories and sees that Mystique was deceiving her into thinking that the X-men were attacking her.
Scott landed on a ledge and Rogue was able to hop down and pull him up Mystique tried to drop a boulder on Scott and Rogue, causing them to fall into the river. Scott saves them from going over a waterfall, but he hits his head. Rogue apologized for what she had done.Xavier, Wolverine, and Storm have been alerted to the danger and fly towards the mountains in the Blackbird to try to find Scott. Scott and Rogue trying their best to avoid Mystique get stuck on a narrow bridge that nearly collapses before the X-men arrive. On the jet, Rogue hesitates to choose sides, but Wolverine assures her that she won't be thrown off. She takes their side and is welcomed by the X-Men. Later, the young mutants confront Xavier about Mystique. Rogue says honesty is important. Xavier promises to be more open with them.
Professor Xavier has a robot of a teenage girl and that's all I can think about. That wasn't a hologram in the danger room Xavier just had a robot of Rogue made and I don't know how or why.
In start contrast to EMH this show so far put emphasis on character based drama. It all been pretty good so far. I'm using on the side of Cyclops is a boring character but changing the settings and making him younger actually helps his character shine a bit. It lets his interactions with the others be personable and giving him that concept of he's growing into his role makes him more interesting.
Mystique can turn into animals in this show and I can't remember if that's a thing she can do in the comics. If so that puts her on the top tier considering this can allow her to fly.
With the bug shake up of rogue joining the X-Men and the reveal of Mystique's identity I'm looking forward to the next episode

The Uncanny X-Men #155 - First Blood
Cyclops is really upset that no one bothered to tell him that his father, Christopher Summers aka Corsair, was still alive. He asks why Storm didn't tell him. She said because Jean asked her not to. Cyclops asks why Jean didn't tell him. Corsair says it's because he asked her not to. They keep arguing and then the Blackbird glows bright yellow. The Shi'ar! They're pulling the Blackbird in with some kind of beam. Soon the Blackbird is captured and on board the Shi'ar ship. The rest of the X-Men are there too! Tons of Shi'ar troops and Gladiator, Chancellor Araki, and Admiral Samédar greet the X-Men. Wolverine is ready to slice everyone up, but the Professor says to put his claws away; he senses that they are in no danger.
The Professor demands to know why the Shi'ar have kidnapped the X-Men. He wants a meeting with Empress Lilandra. Chancellor Araki says that isn't possible because Lilandra has been kidnapped. Wolverine says this is a Shi'ar problem, not theirs. Araki says he's wrong because all evidence points to someone on Earth being behind the kidnapping. Araki wants the X-Men to find Lilandra and bring her back. The team agrees.
Tumblr media
The X-Men, except Kitty and Nightcrawler, are teleported back to the mansion, but the mansion is totally destroyed, see last issue. The X-Men think they will need help to find Lilandra, so they take the short trip over to the Avengers HQ. No one is there except the newest Avenger, Tigra, and Jarvis. The X-Men call the Fantastic Four, but they are unavailable. Jarvis tells the Professor that he doesn't look so good and that he should rest. The Professor explains that he tried to reach Lilandra telepathically, but her captors must have expected that because he was attacked in a psionic ambush and barely escaped.
Back in space, Kitty and Nightcrawler are impressed with how beautiful Earth looks. Kitty tells Nightcrawler that the Professor psychically transferred all the information he has about the Shi'ar to her. She wants to explore the ship...
And on the streets of Manhattan, Ororo and Corsair discuss the past - how Corsair lost his wife, how Scott lost Jean. Someone is watching them. And that someone is pointing a weird alien-looking sniper rifle at them! That someone turns out to be of an alien species called the Brood, and it's name is Skur'kll. Skur'kll wants to capture Ororo and Corsair and take them to the "Mother-Of-Us-All." But someone else named Deathbird (not a Brood) is there too, and she tells Skur'kll not to hurt them. Deathbird says Ororo and Corsair may prove to be a match for the Mother. Skur'kll doesn't care, and he shoots the weapon at Ororo and Corsair.
Tumblr media
Deathbird flies down to, I guess, capture Ororo and Corsair. But a red optic blast knocks her out of the sky. The X-Men have arrived! They try to stop Deathbird, but she gets away. Storm and Corsair start fighting each other and start fighting the X-Men! The weapon the Brood shot at them seems to have them confused. But the Professor quickly telepathically restores them to their right minds. Corsair explains that Deathbird is one of the Shi'ar leading a rebellion against Lilandra.
Skur'kll and more of the Brood start shooting at the X-Men, and they're targeting the Professor! The X-Men fight back! They're able to kill all the Brood, but Deathbird takes the Professor hostage. She takes him to a huge spaceship under a nearby building and when the ship blasts off it causes the building to collapse right on top of the X-Men! Most of the team is ok, but Colossus has been stabbed by a piece of metal! He's dead! And the police show up, holding the X-Men at gunpoint!

i love your deep analysis on xmen characters especially Storm! i wanna know, where would you like to see Ororo's arc go would you like to see her in a new relationship, take on more leadership, maybe see her take some time off and learn about her godhead and family history, i've heard a few people say they would love to see Ro and Forge get closer now that they're older...??? i feel like ororo has been all over the place in the marvel universe helping everyone... but what are your thoughts 💕
I’m glad you appreciate my analysis, thank you for saying so! 😊
Post-DoX, I’d definitely like to see Storm take on more leadership in the X-Men. I really like her in team books, especially when she’s in charge. Some of her most interesting characterization only comes up in context of her being a leader and in seeing what her teammates have to say about her.
With that in mind, I obviously don’t want her to leave the X-Men, but I wouldn’t be opposed if she got a solo book where she did some things that weren’t X-Men based. I’d love to see her connection with Harlem, which was established in Black Panther and the Crew, expanded upon and carried on, so that there’s some continuity in that aspect of her life. I wouldn’t mind a story that relates to her past, whether that’s her mother’s family and her history with the people of Uzuri or her time in Cairo and the relationships she made there.
As for relationships, I’m hoping that she’ll get back together with Logan. Even if that’s not an option, I’m still not a fan of Ororo/Forge. It doesn’t feel to me like it’s a relationship that’s likely to move her character forward. It might be cute for her to have a civilian boyfriend, since as far as I can remember, she hasn’t had one of those before, and the idea of her sitting down to a perfectly normal date with a perfectly normal man is charming to me.
In a world where I run the X-office, I’d like her to be in two different team books and a solo. One would be a standard X-book, maybe the flagship of the line, and she’d be working alongside a lot of her classic teammates. The other team book would be an X-Factor book based in NYC, less about her throwing thunderbolts and more about the team working with and for the community. It could touch on her relationship with Harlem and her history with Callisto and the Morlocks and would be a more grounded look at the goddess. The solo could feature any of the things mentioned above, but I’d really like it to have at least one space arc. I like it when Storm goes to space, both because it’s cool and because it’s always interesting to see a character so tied to the earth taken away from it.
I’d also like a couple of mini-series. One would be a book about her supervising a field trip for a group of students that definitely includes Marisol. They’re probably doing something normal for a field trip, like visiting a science museum, when they find out that there’s a supervillain lair underneath the museum. The kid books of the X-line are usually pretty fun, and although we know Ororo is a teacher, we don’t get to see that as much as we do with some of the other characters.
The other miniseries would be a book where Storm and Beast get tangled up with something magical, and Doctor Strange isn’t answering his phone, and Ororo has magical sensitivity and potential but no training and Hank hasn’t done magic since he was a teenager. Hank is one of my favourite supporting characters for Ororo because Pak did such a good job of establishing him as the one who nags her to follow rules even when she wants to do things her own way. And I think it’d be fun to see two capable heroes out of their element but ultimately capable of saving the day.
I mean, the bottom line is that I’ll be happy as long as they approach her character with the respect she deserves and give her interesting stories and relationships, but those are some of the things I’d choose if I were in charge.
