6: A game that Kon, Jon, the super twins & Jake can play: a game of freeze tag with Kon being it.throughout the city of metropolis, he has to tag everybody within 2-3 hours while the “runners” are trying to stay away from him & doing superhero work; if Kon captures one person, that person will get 1 week from no superheroing, & the more he tag the more weeks extended. If Kon fails to win within the time limit, he’ll take everyone to get ice cream & gets a super-wedgie. Does he mange to win or gets hanged from a street lamp by his pink heart underwear? XD

1) Insulting their costumes when faced with them in patrol, generally saying bad things about their respective families, totally disrespecting Superman and/or the Titans, being a Grade A Bigot of all kinds, and insisting with smugness that Green Arrow’s chili isn’t that spicy; all of them are sure fire ways to get the Duo glaring at someone.

2) In alternate Earths where respectively, Chris would join his Father’s side/ likely usurps his control over the other renegade Kryptonians either way resulting in Earth having said renegades institute a hostile takeover of the Earth while Jake makes a deal to become either The Court of Owls’ ‘Grey Son’ or Deathstroke’s new Apprentice who then takes down the World’s Heroes, all of these have a single common root: Should they say lose their loved ones, best friends, their cities including most of its inhabitants, all of that in one fell swoop to a nefarious supervillain and not enough comfort or reaching out from the other heroes, that’ll break them and their morals become corrupted with the single idea that if they only gone further than they told themselves, tragedies like those can be avoided from happening ever again.

Of course though, for a main (ish) verse, they’d rather cease crime fighting and all sort of super heroics officially before any turn to tyranny or villainy is ever considered.

3) Besides probably who can keep SuperBear for the night as you say when they were smaller, I can also see the Chris and Jon race each other to the bathroom if they both need to go, who gets the last tater tot, who controls the remote for the TV as their favorite shows have the same time slot despite differing channels, and finally who’s turn on the video game it is. About 3/4 times, Jon’s usually the one instigating these tiny feuds due to his stubbornness.

4) Two Up Highs, Three Down Lows, Fistbump, Shoulder Pat, Fistbump, Shoulder Pat and Side Hugs. Its short sweet and to the point

6) Conner barely squeaks out a victory in this game but one measly second before the deadline closes; able to barely get to Jake within the tiniest poke as the latter was flying at all his speed to the Grayson Apartment, just about to each the doorknob when he was tagged.

In spite of this victory though, Conner was a good sport and took everybody out for some ice cream anyways, all on him.

Jhoan Durán #CleatWatch, 2024 Edition

The tracker returns for a second straight year after a delayed start due to the oblique strain, because Duran is still nice to look at and his cleats are still fire. Post is updated with every appearance and I've been adding reference pictures as they become available. This has taken on the vibes of the orchestra on the Titanic but I am nothing if not committed to the bit.

Duran continues to use the same model cleat he's used his entire major league career, the Nike Alpha Huarache Elite 3 Mid, according to the very helpful website whatproswear.com. The Nike Huarache line is very popular among baseball players, and Duran in particular seems to prefer the mid-height model with its high ankle strap.

As I noted last year, players seem to use older or backup gear during spring training before switching to their new custom stuff when the season starts. Poring through photos from Duran's abbreviated spring training, I noticed the northwoods and DR flag cleats from last year, plus the red palm tree cleats seen above, which is probably a spring training-specific design.

4/30/24: Duran's road choice this year is an updated edition of his bicolor cleats but with the colors flipped, navy on the left and red on the right. We'll call them bicolor 2.0. Featuring "Durantula" written across both straps, his logo on the right ankle, his #59 on the left ankle, "God" written on the right toe, and the grayscale portrait on the left toe. He wears these with both the away navy and gray pinstripe uniforms.

The artist Duran works with posts some nice closeup pictures of the shoes themselves on Instagram, so that'll do for now in lieu of any good action shots.

5/3/24: My only complaint about Duran's original flamethrower cleats were that they weren't custom enough, and man did he deliver this year with the flamethrower 2.0. This year he wears them with the home white, home navy, and cream Twin Cities uniforms. The red-yellow flame gradient on the toes is back, as is the solid red heel, but the negative space in between is now black with white sparkles to represent the crowd's phone flashlights during his walkout entrance.

The really fun part is the velocities of his five fastest pitches from last year: "104.4mph" on the left heel, "104.5mph" and "104.8mph" on the right, and "104.6mph" on each ankle strap. Like, what a flex. I love it.

5/12/24: Custom Mother's Day cleats! Most players sport custom pink gear in addition to the modified caps each Mother's Day. Duran went with solid hot pink cleats with red and navy flower patterns, and six different women's names in light pink script on the heels and ankle straps. Wife, presumably mother, and other relatives and/or in-laws, probably?

That's all for now, though Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com literally just wrote a piece on the flamethrower 2.0 cleats, which motivated me to get this writeup out. He also mentions custom cleats for the City Connects (revealed June 10th, debuting June 14th, as announced by the Twins), which is 👀. More to come!

6/14/24: As I was hoping, Duran pitched on City Connect debut night, though he had his flamethrower 2.0 cleats here. Lots of Twins players had custom cleats tonight, including Correa, SWR, and Buxton, but probably not everyone's have come in yet.

6/16/24: Custom Father's Day cleats, paired with the City Connects. These are solid light blue with baseball-themed graphic patterns: baseballs, gloves, hot dogs, popcorn, and "Dad" with heart outlines. Like the Mother's Day cleats, there are seven men's names written on them, this time in white on the outer front part. Brother, presumably father, and other friends/relatives?

Duran's kids also threw out the first pitch to him in the most adorable ceremonial first pitch I've ever seen.

7/7/24: New cleats! I'll call these the cherry bomb cleats because they're all-red, there's fire, and it's that time of year. The white Nike logo across the ankle strap has flame effects, the white inside swoosh logo has a paint drip effect, and his #59 is in white on the heel. Duran's worn them with the cream Twin Cities alts, the home navy, and the home white, so they seem to be a straight replacement for the flamethrower 2.0's.

7/20/24: We have the City Connect cleats! These dropped on Instagram on June 20th, a month before Duran actually pitched in another City Connect game. They're another entry in Duran's fashionable asymmetry collection, with a yellow base and a two-toned blue ankle strap and heel segment reminiscent of a sky-water horizon line.

The left cleat has two-toned blue flames rising along both sides, with "10,000 Lakes" in white on the outside. The right cleat has a detailed drawing of Goku in Super Saiyan Blue mode on the outside, because many baseball players are massive weebs. I mean, hey, Carlos Estevez already does the Kamehameha pose after every save, so why not Goku shoes for Duran.

9/17/24: Duran wore his earrings while pitching for what I believe is the first and only time. Like many players, Duran wears consistent everyday jewelry, in his case a chain and some nice diamond stud earrings. Unlike most players, though, he never wears it in-game, only during practice and in the dugout/bullpen. I always wondered how the logistics of that worked, like does he put his earrings in his pocket before warming up?

9/26/24: After going back to the flamethrower 2.0 cleats for his prior appearance on the homestand, Duran's last outing of 2024 featured brand new cleats, paired with the cream Twin Cities alts. They're all-cream with a black tongue and red laces, easily his least customized regular season cleats since 2022. The cream soda cleats do keep with Duran's overall trend of simpler designs for his late-season gear.

Bonus: Also dropped on Instagram mid-season are closeups of several of last year's cleats, including the first gen flamethrower and bicolor, as well as Mother's Day and Father's Day cleats that we did not see in a game last year.

"I wore a smart suit at our first wedding," Saint muses, flipping through the book of fabrics Eva has sent him. "It was black and the jacket had a pattern embroidered that mirrored my accolades. Where father found it, he never shared." Another swatch-made-page turned, a cream color with a sunshine yellow lace overlay. It was pretty but would clash with anything Osiris wore and that was something he would not do. He smiled to himself, "If I was dashing, Osiris looked like a king. His jacket was longer, almost a tuxedo, meant to call phoenix wind to mind when he moved."

Ikora grinned from her seat, she and Shaxx had been asked to assist. The Warlock Vanguard wondered, "And this time?"

Matter-of-fact he stated, "I wish to be a princess."

"A what," Shaxx choked on his tea.

"I said, what I said," the other Titan beamed. He was unfazed by his friend's reaction. It wasn't every day that the Hero of Six Fronts said he wanted to be a princess.

The Warlock Vanguard's grin grew and she beamed. She'd been the one, at his request, to talk to Eva about this endeavor. The one-time seamstress had balked at fist but then, hooked by an idea, had loaded her down with several fabric and and dress design books. She instructed her to bring them to Saint without delay.

Now, sipping her tea, Ikora asked, "You said you had a design already picked out."

"mmm...yes," he set the fabrics aside, making a mental note to return to them afterward. "This one." Gingerly he picked up a glossy booklet and handed it to Ikora. There was a bookmark between two pages and what looked like sticky notes placed next to a particular dress design.

Saint watched expectantly as she studied the image. "It is too much?"

"No," Shaxx had stood, voice dead serious. He stretched until his spine cracked, and moved to where he could see the gown over Ikora's shoulder. Then, smile wide and voice filled with encouraging approval, "It's perfect! You'll look absolutely wonderful old friend!"

It took Eva some time and several secret meetings with the Titan to get everything just so. Waist cinched and colors matched to the ribbons on his chest plate (and exo frame). She'd said he could wear the suit jacket as well if he wanted, it was in fine condition and had only needed some minor mending. She'd insisted he have it with him since the city was cold during Crimson Days -when the Vow Renewal/Wedding 2.0 was set to take place.

The armor made Saint look far bulkier than normal and it had been a surprise to see how svelte he was without it. Saint was still a large man, tall and broad, but closer in size to Zavala than Eva had expected. The Titans, as a group, were all big men and women and theys, built like walls and towers.

He blushed as much as Exos could. "This feels like the first one," he whispered, "Exciting, frightening, and right all at once." With thoughtful investigation, he found the pocket's she'd sewn in. "I see why these are so popular."

"How do you like it?" She asked, smoothing the ribbons that laced up the back of the bodice.

Saint spun, the skirt flaring out around him in her living room. He beamed, "Like a Princess. Like Osiris will be en rapt."

Eva beamed back him. It was possibly her finest work since Crow's Cloak. Not even Osiris' suit - tucked away in a separate room - could compare to the simple elegance of the dress and the joy of the man wearing it.

Osiris paced nervously.

The ceremony wasn't extravagant, they'd both agreed that would be too much. This was for their friends as much as for themselves. to that end, taking over the garden near the market had almost been too much. He wasn't ready for crowds but half the guardians that worked with Young Wolf - who was Saint's Person of Honor - were keeping the curious away. That meant a melange of titans, warlocks, and hunters had taken up postings throughout the plaza. For a second he spied the ghost Merlin zipping back up to an apartment balcony.

Clapping him on the shoulder as he took his place at front as their officiant, Zavala whispered, "Remember to breathe old man."

"Ha. Ha." He chuffed back, stopping on his assigned side of the altar. Swallowing, he whispered, "I wasn't so nervous when we had our first wedding you know. The city was only recently established then and the Speaker officiated. He had a pair of fancy jackets made for us and a suit for Saint. Felwinter gave me the one I wore. There was a chuppa and we stomped on a glass and during the celebrations several of our friends and students conspired to hoist us up on chairs. I'd seen recordings of Jewish Weddings from before the collapse but never expected it to be such an expression of joy. Or to be so afraid I'd split my skull open."

Nodding, the Titan Vanguard added, "I have a ketubah. Gepetto sent a scan to Targe."

Osiris chuckled. "Of course he -"

Music cut him off.

It was soft and came from everywhere.

The ghosts, likely led by little Maestro, were projecting it. The thrum of strings and trill of wind instruments poured over the space like a babbling creek. Everyone turned to face the little archway that separated the garden and market plazas. One of their ushers opened the doors. Young Wolf and Crow walked down the aisle, side by side and trying not to grin like excited children. Once they reached Zavala and Osiris, the took their posts on either side behind where the grooms would be. Crow had agreed to share Best Person duties with Ikora (she had insisted and Osiris found he was quite fond of the young Hunter).

Speaking of her, Ikora escorted Shaxx down the aisle. She flashed him a grin that Osiris narrowed his eyes at affectionate before taking her post beside Crow. Saint stepped beside Young Wolf and adjusted the small band of lavender wound around the horn of his helmet.

The music dropped.

It became ephemerally.

Everyone stared at the far door, which had been closed behind Shaxx and Ikora. The air in the space stilled. Everyone stood an turned their attention to the doors and the archway.

The music stopped, pause while Maestro sent the song out to the rest of his Ghost orchestra. An old Golden Age orchestral piece began. It filled the garden and the market with a slow but joyous and love filled melody.

Their ushers pulled the doors open wide.

Saint stepped through the curtain shrouded arch and everyone let out the breath they'd collectively held. Their attention was fixed on the titan, moving towards Osiris like a princess. He was practically floating towards him, smiling and blushing and his bright violet eyes were fixed on the old man.

The ball gown dress hugged his exo frame with same expert tailoring and bold lines that the suit had several life times ago. Osiris found himself several shades darker and lips suddenly very dry. Propriety was the only thing that kept him from marching down the aisle, grabbing the larger Exo by the hand and disappearing to their apartment (doors bared and an "out of office" set for everyone). Propriety and Eva Levant, she would have killed them both if they let all of her work go to waste publicly. It certainly wouldn't in private. Later.

He wondered for a moment, under Saint's intent gaze, if his husband had opted for a garter as well.

Worry clouded his gaze and Saint spoke, softly so only Osiris would hear him, "You look unwell my love. You're very red."

"No," he argued, shaking his head furiously. Linking hands with his husband Osiris elaborated, "No, I am struck by the fact that I have laid eyes upon the beautiful man in my life and he has yet again taken my breath away."

My November 2022 toy haul is finally here! I was almost having a little heart attack with this shipment; first due to the costs of it shipping to me. I figured it would be at least half as much as it was, due to the Masterlise Sasuke I got a few months ago. Sadly, Giyu’s box is at least half as wide if not also taller, than Sasuke’s box, so he’s the main culprit for this shipment being so inexcusably expensive. T___T;;; My poor wallet, and all the Holiday shopping I had to do before then... DX Then to make things more interesting, DHL had the great idea of transferring my package to the USPS, which doesn’t deliver to my house. Making it an ordeal and a half to pick up my box, and not have it potentially returned to Japan. Making me see my life flash before my eyes, due to the freaking expensive cost of shipping for this box once only to have it returned!!!! I was able to get it in the end, but the stress probably caused me premature aging, and I’m already an old-fart, I don’t need stress like that in my life, even less at this time of the year... >___>;;; Now I don’t know which courier I’ll be using from now on. DHL is not usually the best choice anyway, but they’ve never f-ed-up like this before...

I pre-ordered the smaller Giyu ichiban-kuji and Eren prize figures from TOM, but because they are kind of slower than anyone else. And perhaps not even a certain thing they’ll get prize figures in stock (ever! young Nier was delayed to March 2023 now! Freaking heck! Good thing I got one from Sideshow at least!). So I got these just in case, as well as because I want to unbox the Eren one, if I do get a second one eventually. I idiotically didn’t see it for pre-order anywhere else, but the one othe store I usually shop from had it in-stock, I just didn’t know. Now I have to wait and see if TOM ever gets it. I am a bit disappointed that they seem to have made his eyes smaller, from the owner photos I saw. I thought the prototype was pretty close to perfect, and far prettier than the PUP version. Oh well, at least it still looks far better than the PUP one, which I do own, so I can complain all I want because I did pay for it anyway.

I’m super happy with the plushies, although I shouldn’t be hoarding those now as well. I do regret not getting the mini version of 9s, but I thought I didn’t want it -- now I sorely regret it! I hope they do a third re-release. The Giyu Potetto is a second one for me to unbox (someday).

Around 5am, you and Reiner were waiting in the living room, each holding a cup of coffee. In the past days you got a call from Colt, asking if you can take care of Falco for a week, he sounded really apologetic and so you reassured him it's not trouble at all.

Apparently him and Zeke had a work related trip to a far away town, being understaffed in that town and all, the situation was dire and they couldn't refuse without their rating taking a huge hit not to mention morally too. But as a compensation, the company promised a higher pay to make their effort worth it.

You didn't notice the repeated knocking on the door till a couple seconds later, lack of sleep delaying your senses.

Opening it, you were met with an anxious Colt carrying his little brother in his arms, still asleep in his pajamas. Zeke from behind him carrying a couple bags and backpacks, he waved to you with a smile.

As Reiner took Falco in his arms and some of the bags too, you carried his Marvel school backpack and a list Colt made for all the things Falco needed and liked. He seemed to put a lot of effort in it, somethings in it you didn't even know yourself.

While tucking Falco in your bed, Reiner couldn't help but express his worry over Colt working himself to exhausting, both mentally and physically.

Yeah it was only a temporary thing till Colt graduates college and finds a stable good paying job, whilst taking care of his little brother as much as he can. He's been carrying Falco's responsibility on his shoulder since the funeral without a twitch or a complaint.

You think back to all the times you saw Colt, most being for mere minutes when he came to drop off the kids or pick them up just as his classes ended and before his shift at work started, barely having time for himself yet he chose to spend that little remaining free time on Falco and his friends.

You sit next to Reiner on the bed, gently brushing Falco's hair away from his face as he's sound asleep. He always looked up to his brother more than anyone else and would never let anyone talk badly about him.

It's like his own personal superhero.

"Do you think he'll be sad knowing he didn't get to say goodbye before Colt left?" You ask, still looking at Falco.

Reiner thinks for a moment before answering, "probably, but won't show it" he secures the blanket more around Falco, "sometimes I wonder who's more stubborn with showing their emotions, Gabi or Falco."

"I'd say Zofia wins the acting Oscar" you turn the lights off on your way out, "wasn't it for Udo, we wouldn't know how she's feeling half the time."

Around 10am, a very sleepy Falco merges out of the dark bedroom. Making his way to sit between you and Reiner on the couch, while carrying a blanket around him.

He leans into Reiner's hand when he strokes Falco's hair while you secure the blanket around him. Seeming unusual quiet, you and Reiner shared a knowing concerned look.

Offering to make him his favourite food for breakfast got a smiles out of Falco, Reiner even let him choose what shapes he wants his sunny side eggs as.

While he went to cook and prepare food, Falco shyly leans into your lap as if testing the water.

Please assure him it's okay to seek physical comfort from you, wrap your arms around him and he'll be embarrassed at first to ask to sit on your lap but will love it afterwards.

Just don't tell anyone about it okay? It's something his parents used to do when he was little.

When he heard about Gabi coming over today, he seemed to light up. While Udo and Zofia have weekend music lessons they couldn't make it till tomorrow.

While looking away, he asked if you could watch teen titans go with him.

The rest of the day went smoothly after that, Falco was a good kid in general and a really helpful and understanding person. He helped you both with chores and even attempted to cook pancakes.

While it came out burned, don't tell him that! He's really worried so please make him know you loved it and it was super delicious.

You and Reiner even took him to the dogs park nearby, he had pet so many good dogs till he couldn't count, even played fetch with one. After that you got ice cream on the way back.

When Gabi finally arrived, full of energy and enthusiastic about Falco staying over meaning she too will be staying over

All hell broke loose, it's like a switch had been flipped and the well behaved good boy Falco you know was completely weoponised by Gabi as she pulled him into her mischiefs

By himself, Falco is a good kid, well behaved, polite and responsible for his age. But with adding Gabi to the mix? They're a force to be reckon with.

You could see that Reiner was trying his hardest to deny that his closest cousin Gabi, was the bad influence on other kids all along.

You know? The one leading you off a cliff that your moms tells you not to follow? The rebellious kid with very strong opinions and the will to fist fight god? Yeah that one.

Apparently, no one gave Falco the cliff talk yet because he seemed far too eager to follow her to the end of the earth and down that cliff, he'd even jump hand in hand with her just to protect her from the sharp rocks under.

Gabi was actually looking forward to Falco staying over, since either way she'd spend a couple of days with you and Reiner whenever her parents are away or are too busy. She can't handle feeling lonely in the house, it's one of the worst feelings she's ever experienced.

It reached a point that Reiner gave her a copy of the keys, just so she could come in whenever even if you were at work. He too didn't like the idea of her being alone in a house all by herself, yet her parents didn't seem bothered at all.

But now she has a friend to spend the time with!

Falco was finding comfort in the fact that him and Gabi are currently in similar situations, while his was temporarily he felt better knowing he wasn't alone in this.

By the end of the the day, they managed to build a pillow fort in your living room. No one allowed to enter unless they're bearing offerings snacks

Around 10pm, when both of them fall asleep inside the fort. Falco hugging a pillow to his chest while Gabi still had a controller in her hand.

Of course Reiner took some pictures, how could he not? Especially with the way Falco's fingers were tangled with Gabi's as she had cookie crumbs around her mouth.

He also sent it to the groupchat Zeke made, reassuring Colt that Falco is having the time of his life whilst also sharing their adorable cousins with the rest of his friends.

The week went by faster than anyone could notice, good times always fly fast eh?

Each morning you and Reiner would walk Falco to the school bus before watching him sit next to Udo, sending him off with packed lunch and waving as the bus went away.

After school the rest of the kiddos will come with him home, keeping him company and helping him with homework too. They'd make sure to play Videgames right after.

Porco actually took over the duty of taking Zofia and Udo back to their houses, let's just say their mothers didn't like him at all, but reluctantly agreed after Reiner assured them he's a close family friend.

Each day around 6pm, Colt would video call him on his work break, sometimes with Zeke and other times alone. Falco would tell him about his day and Colt would praise him for all the good work he's done, he'd even share stories of his own and remind him to brush his teeth and eat his vegetables.

After each call, Falco will be noticeably more...down. can you blame him? He really misses him brother.

Sit next to him and hug him close please, he really needs it but he can't bring himself to ask for it. Soothe away his worries and don't mention it if his eyes start watering, just pull him against your chest and let him cry his heart out.

On nights he's particularly sad, he'd sneak into your bedroom to sleep between you and Reiner. It's something he used to do back when he was little, he can't help but miss his parents.

It makes him feel safe so make sure to keep a space for him in there always.

Please stroke his hair till he falls asleep like his mother used to do each night, and let him lean against you while watching cartoons like his father did.

You also noticed how...dotting the kiddos are around him during these times.

Gabi is more gentle with him, even willing to play the games he wants instead of hers. She always teams up with him and her words whenever they win make him smile.

Zofia shares her food with him, something so scarce. She gives up her turn on the tv for him and even defends his choice in what to watch if the others complain.

Udo is the one making him space on the school bus and walking with him home too. Helping him with his homework and holding his hand whenever he seemed to get sad.

Udo and Falco are a great emotional support to each other, they're not afraid to speak about their emotions to the other.

And naturally they're the most comforting, with Zofia botteling up her own emotions and Gabi wrestling through it, it's the two of them who work as the group emotional support backbone.

Reiner couldn't stop talking to you about how proud he is of Udo when he saw him comforting Falco these days, you couldn't agree more.

By the end of the week, the three kids were surrounding Falco on the couch as they played Mario karts.

Zofia was threatening to throw hands with whoever threw that blue shell at her making her last place, Gabi was too busy securing her first place spot.

Udo was leaving strategtic traps in his trail while in third place, making Zofia even more frustrated as she fell into every single one.

Falco was racing with Gabi in second place, attempting to push her kart or power through to the finish line.

When the black and white line came into view, Gabi and Falco's karts were separate by mere inches, both of them attempting to outrun the other.

And when Gabi managed to get a hold of the first spot for three seconds, a flying blue shell knocked her away. Making Falco the winner as he crossed the line.

To this day, Gabi doesn't know if which one of Zofia and Udo were the cause of her demise, but oh she will find the traitor and they will pay.

After that intense scene, they all shared a bag of cookies she brought from home! It was animal shaped.

The band plays on as The Titanic sinks. And by The Titanic, I mean the NHS. And by the band, I mean healthcare professionals. 

I have never felt so tired in my life, it doesn’t matter how much sleep I get. Every day at work is the same, all the calls blur into one, same description down to the truck. Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, pyrexia, cough, covid positive, covid positive, covid positive. Endless jobs that never needed an emergency ambulance but somehow we got there anyway. Stay at home, you don’t need the hospital, no you are just unwell with corona. Refer to GP, call out of hours, leave at home with worsening advice. Or they’re super sick, but they never look it, it doesn’t look like hypoxia, there’s no cyanosis, how are you speaking to me with oxygen levels below 50, how are you able to talk and move? High flow oxygen, the closest hospital not on bypass please, blue lights, keep breathing. Admission to the ITU, tubed as we leave the resus bay. 

Waiting, waiting, general broadcast, we have 20 calls holding, with additional lower priority, please go green if you can. Sorry dispatch, we’re delayed, waiting for call backs and referrals. General broadcast, cat one, cat one, CPR in progress, is there a truck, is there someone out there? Hello dispatch, we can take it, our paperwork will wait. Patients waiting, patients dying, patients not getting an ambulance fast enough because we have too many calls. Record number of calls across the service, record number of patients attended, record number of staff off sick. Staff member in hospital, staff member in ITU. Obituary. Spend Christmas by yourself because you’re sick. Don’t see another living person in 6 days. When was the last time you had a hug? It’s been a year since you’ve seen your family.  I love my job, I love being a paramedic, I moved across the world to do it. But I have hit my limit and I am so tired. All my patients are covid, and so few genuinely need an emergency ambulance response, they want a check up, they want reassurance, they want medication. So I do their checks, I give them the reassurance, I call their GPs and organise care, antibiotics for the secondary chest infections, I give advice, I clean everything and I go again. I have been exposed to covid more times than I will ever be able to count. I’ve seen the spectrum, I’ve been part of that spectrum. I have been to four deaths in two weeks. For reference, I went to my previous four deaths in 9 months. I took a man to hospital whose son was already on the ITU, the man’s father had just died. Everything is covid, everything is heart breaking.  We don’t have the beds, we don’t have the staff, we don’t have the resources, it feels like we don’t have the oxygen. We are not coping. And I’m beginning to wonder if I am coping. This time last year my country was burning around us. This year my new country is succumbing to a virus. How much more can one heart take? Most of us don’t know when we will be allowed home to see our family, we don’t know when this will be over. Will it ever be over?

I will probably never be able to read a book or watch a movie about a pandemic, real or otherwise. No more contagion fiction for me, no Station 11, it nearly caused a breakdown. A whole chunk of stories I can no longer enjoy. My hands are cracked, they bleed with the slightest bump, my lips are chapped. My mum asked how I was feeling, I told her I knew I looked terrible, she was allowed to say it. Pale, dark rings, spots, exhausted. I looked better when I was at the end of being sick.  Please get your vaccine, please wear your mask, please wash your hands, and stay home, and leave space. I know you’ve had enough, I’ve had enough, we are all over it, we are bored of it, we are tired, we are stressed. But we cannot keep going unless something changes. So if you clap, clap, but please follow the rules.  I would like to see this summer at the beach, eating ice cream and laughing with my friends. I would like to see the spring, cautious, hopeful, I want to be able to visit flower fields and drink lemonade, and hold hands, and hug. I want to be able to go home, and spend time with my family, halfway across the world. I want the world to open up, I want us to see each other again. I want us to live.  The band is still playing at The Titanic goes down. Our audience has left us, the conductor has thrown away his baton and leapt onto a lifeboat. But we are still playing, and we will keep playing until our instruments break.

It wasn’t every day that Marinette would be sitting in her living room watching TV rather than working on a commission. Sitting cross-legged that is, on the couch eating ice cream. A date went wrong, perhaps, but it’s been months since she even entered the dating world.

“Marinette,” She turns the red ladybug kwami, who was snacking on a cookie. “There’s nothing on, maybe you should work on that commission.”

Marinette hums as she thinks of options. Instead of answering she place a spoon full of mint chocolate chip in her mouth. Tikki could only sigh in defeat. This has been her life whenever her chosen isn’t being a hero or in the process of becoming the next Miraculous guardian.

“Tikki,” Marinette picks up the remote and silence the TV. “I’ve been thinking…maybe I should call them. It’s been five years.”

Tikki drops the cookie and flies over to her chosen. The Kwami of Creation did her best to hug the young woman but compared to her small frame at best she could hug her chosen’s cheek.

“You don’t have to, Marinette. What happened then was an honest reaction.” Tikki attempts to comfort, but she knew how much of that day weighed on the designer.

Marinette shakes her head, puts on a smile and kisses Tikki’s forehead. “Thank you,” She whispers lovingly.

Tikki smiles at her chosen with pride. Marinette brings the volume up on the T.V. Nothing appeared to be interested in her to watch.

Just as Marinette was about to get up and leave for the kitchen, a news report caught her eyes. A disaster at a local farmhouse. That’s odd, why would there be w disaster at a local farmhouse. That seems like something out of a horror show.

Rather than ignoring it, she watches intently looking for clues. It wasn’t until a male wearing something similar to Robin’s outfit come into the frame screaming: “The Titans are back, bitches!” on national television.

Marinette drops the empty ice cream carton. The rest of the news fades into nothing, her mind goes blank. She staggers back into the couch, breathing became a challenge. No this was not happening. Not now.

“Tikki,” Marinette breaths, “Did that just happened?” The words felt heavy in her mouth, like nothing made sense.

“I’m afraid so, Marinette,” Tikki confirms.

Marinette lets out an off chuckle as if madness was her only source of sanity. She continues to laugh until they become heartbroken tears. God fucking damn it, Dick.

“I guess I’m going to end a plane ticket.” Marinette sighs after her crazy fit. “If I know Dick like I do, then San Francisco is his next stop.”

“I’m sure everything will be alright,” Tikki says before going back to snacking on her cookie as Marinette walks into the kitchen.

Marinette sets the empty carton down and walks over to the dormant laptop to look at flighting arrangements. Thankfully, there was one an open seat for a tomorrow flight for a cheap cost to.

“Looks like we're going to California, Tikki.” Marinette smiles, purchasing the ticket.

That night Marinette spent her time packing the most important items in her suitcases: her clothes, fabric for commissions, shoes, etc.

Arriving back in California felt like a foreign dream. Years of being away would do that to you. Instead of going straight to Titan’s Tower, Marinette decides to get into contact with her old apartment complex. Let’s give them a few days to settle in before she comes knocking down everything they ever built.  

“It so nice to see you again, Miss Dupain-Cheng.” The landlord greets the young woman, “Are you planning on staying this time?”

Marinette pats on her suitcases, “We shall see,” She grins at the older woman. “Is my apartment still available?”

The older woman shuffles through some paperwork. “Oh yes, actually, you officially own your apartment.”

Marinette gave the woman a confused look.

“A young man came here not days after you moved out and basically paid for the entire apartment, so on the books, your place is the only condo we officially have.” The woman continues.

Marinette bites her lip and thanks the woman. The landlord gives Marinette the new set of keys and wished her the best.

When Marinette enters her apartment turned condo, she could help but cuss out the one person she knew would have the balls to do such a thing.

“Dammit, Dick.” She murmurs setting her luggage in the middle of the living room.

“So, when are you going to see him?” Tikki asks as Marinette started to unpack.

“I don’t know, if I’m planning on staying here longer than what I hope, I might as well warn my clients about potential delays and figure out where I’m going to put everything.” Marinette huffs realizing just how much her online business takes up too much time.

Tikki looks out the window to see that the sun was setting. They have been unpacking all day, and now it was time to rest.

“Well let get some rest, Marinette. You look like you’re about to pass out.”

Marinette yawns, “Nothing that a shot of caffeine can’t fix.”

“No,” Tikki deadpans and flies over to her chosen.

These coming days are going to be a whirlwind of emotions to come.

Valentines 2020: A Celebration of My Ships

So it’s valentine’s day again, and...yeah it’s not too great when you’re single is it? Considering that I’ve already gone through a tub of ice cream...

But, it doesn’t mean I’m a cynic, quite the opposite. Most of my fandoms involves a ship in some shape or form, hell I shipped before I even knew what shipping was, so I’m gonna talk about some of them...the ones that still make me happy and didn’t crash and burn in heartbreaking and frankly insulting fashion (looking at you Homestuck ¬_¬), gotta mention that these are not all the ships I ship, they’re just some of the ones I’m quite consistently high on

New Entries So with new fandoms come new ships...as is the usual formula anyway, though my pattern of watching things is usually with some delay, I only watched Rurouni Kenshin and started My Hero Academia in 2019, I still hold off on Attack on Titan and My Hero Season 4 because if I get in, I get IN. So these fandoms may not be new, but they are new to me Steven Universe is very new to me, I’ve been aware of how good it is and their concepts like Fusion. I like it, particularly Lapis Lazuli I really relate to her, but ship wise the two I really like are the obvious ones; Steven x Connie and Ruby x Sapphire (Garnet)

Garnet is badass and chill at the same time, but when she unfuses we see the stuff that makes me smile, the pda between Ruby and Sapphire is adorable, the little pecks and whatnot softens me up like no man’s business. Steven and Connie also have the mushy dynamic with both of them deeply into each other but still being strong individuals. The love for each other is equally platonic as it is romantic as they gel together, both being strong willed in different ways. The laughter probably gets me the most with both of them, the genuine laughter is so sweet and so realistic it’s hard not to love. My Hero Academia seems to be our next wave of shonen anime and for good reason, it does high notes so well and the cast of characters are vibrant and exciting. I haven’t hit Season 4 yet since I’m waiting till it’s all done to binge so I may be a little behind on some stuff (sadly it’s hard to avoid spoilers, I know about Infinity and Unbreakable). While I do like Deku x Uraraka, Tetsutetsu x Kendo and Eraserjoke but the two that I find most enjoyable are Todomomo and Kamijirou

(artist nonoko135 btw, bit tough to find a single image with both ships) Fairly popular ships in their own right, Todomomo doesn’t get many hints but they are sweet, naive rich kids with their own confidence issues, it also feels like they look out for each other especially after the final exam they did together. With Kamijirou though it’s probably one I favour if I had to choose between the two, simply because it’s a dynamic I really like; she busts on him so hard to mask her enjoyment of his company and he takes it because he feels at ease around her, the best part is when Kaminari goes 0 volts, he makes her laugh and that’s kinda big for Jirou given how self-conscious and stoic she can be. Rurouni Kenshin was always on my list, I have often heard about the Swordsman with a blade that cuts no-one. The anime is a bit up and down, after Shishio it’s just filler, but as documented in my Redemption Arc post it is at its core a great story of redemption for the main character, and the driving force for Kenshin’s redemption is his love for Kaoru

While Sano and Megumi have a unique dynamic hinted to be romantic at times, nothing can really beat Kenshin and Kaoru, she literally became Kenshin’s conscience, a representation of his hope to be a good man away from the shadow of Battousai the Manslayer. It may be your traditional romance of the two wanting to be by each other’s side in danger but it works so well given the kind of danger Kenshin is often in. Kaoru still strives to protect herself and aid Kenshin in a way that doesn’t make her continuously wonder about being a burden and Kenshin does everything in his power to keep Kaoru from pain, physical and emotional, even if it meant leaving to keep her safe. The main part of what makes this lovely is the fact that not only did Kaoru’s influence make Kenshin value his own life once more but after continual torment in his past she still saw him as the person he wanted to be, and welcomed in a new home, a new family he was able to live a life he never imagined he could deserve. The Regulars Our Regulars are the ships I still consistently ship, they’re not very old but they’re still pretty great and they still stand the test of time. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has quite a few ships over its 6 (coming up 7) season lifespan, being the longest surviving MCU tv series and one of the most consistently great shows MCU offered - especially Season 4, some of the best TV was on Season 4. But while Philinda is close, Mack and Yoyo or even Piper and Davis (don’t, I don’t care if you believe she’s a lesbian with the hots for May these are my ships) there is one one ship in Shield you can all rally behind, Fitzsimmons

Even when canon it is a consistent emotional rollercoaster. One of those ships where the writers know you love it and decide to put you through as much pain and emotional torment as humanely possible. But you endure it, because these two smart kids are worth it. They have sweet moments, badass moments, emotional moments and even though they get brought apart time and time again, they still find each other, the universe cannot stop them - and it better end happily for them come next season. Overwatch was a phenomenon when it came out a few years ago, Blizzard may have caused it to have some heavily bad rep but I still look forward to its sequel coming out. Given its large roster and most of the characters’ sexuality and relationship status up in the air, it leaves a lot of room for shipping. I do still love Anahardt, Mercy76 kinda falling due to 76 being gay but I like Gency too, my rarepairs include McPharah and Symmzo but my favourite is actually Meihem.

Now I know, Mei’s only voice lines towards Junkrat are cold, they have differing views in terms of omnics and...due process of the law. But there’s a lot they do have in common; both are quite intelligent engineers having made their weapons by hand, both endured trauma and both love their puns. But even the stuff that make them different can compliment one another. You don’t have to like it, but I do, I enjoy the dynamic of Jamison being so head over heels that he embarrasses himself to try and get Mei’s attention, while Mei softens to the fact that his very nature is warped by his lawless upbringing and that deep down he is an exciting and in his own way sweet guy.  Back to anime, because what else do I do with my day, getting into One Piece was always going to be a long effort, keeping tabs on the Manga does make it easier and I’ve been able to catch up quickly. Ships are shaky territory with One Piece because Oda does make a point of not having romance happen a lot, not to existing living characters at least. But I still have the ones I like; Shanks x Makino, Sabo x Koala, Franky x Robin, Sanji x Pudding, Rebecca x Koby, the list goes on, but my favourite has to be Zoro x Tashigi

May not be up there with the ‘big ships’ of One Piece but I do enjoy them the most. Individually the two are characters I have deep interest in; Zoro is well Roronoa Fucking Zoro, santoryu swordsman extraordinaire, master of nothing happening and will cut you 8 ways to Sunday, but Tashigi is a character I like because she also tries, unlike Zoro she isn’t blessed with 2 years training with Mihawk and she’s at constant arms with this self doubt that as a Woman she won’t be as strong (and probably whoever of influence to her made her believe such a thing), people may get on her back for never winning a fight but she fights strong people without a second thought. But back to the pairing, they have an interesting dynamic; two very similar people on different sides of the law, I don’t think Tashigi continues to chase him simply because he refused to cut her in their fight and I don’t think it’s just her former resemblance to Kuina that gets Zoro so riled up about her, I mean Zoro is usually so chill to side characters to the point where he’s ready to throw down but with Tashigi, it’s different, they bicker but he also came to her aid. I still continue to hope that Tashigi shows in Wano for more Zoro interaction, and to prove herself to fans and to Zoro that she is strong and capable. One of my favourite anime of all time is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, a combination of laughter, tears and deep philosophical character journeys in a 20th century world with the alchemy fantasy element drawn from actual legit alchemical sources. It just hits all the right notes for me, and ships hit right too; I love most of the ships from EdWin, AlMay and LingFan, but like Fitzsimmons there is one ship that stands above even the main characters, Royai.

Mustang and Hawkeye right from the bat have that connection that needs no dancing around, they care for each other but they work together. Like the rest of the ships they banter, argue but always have each other’s backs, to the point that they go into an insane rage at even the threat of the other being hurt. I don’t think anyone can not ship these two, that’s how strong their chemistry is, even if they can’t officially label it as a relationship because of their jobs it’s that line in the sand that everyone knows it, because it’s impossible to ignore. The Old Guard So we get to the oldest ships in my catalogue, the fact that they could stand the test of time is for a long time what shaped me as a shipper. I still ship these to this day so I ship them pretty hardcore Comics is probably the hardest place to ship something, because different writers will try different pairings at the drop of a hat. Even consistent pairings like Spiderman and Mary Jane, Batman and Catwoman, Beat Boy and Raven, Superman and Lois and more can end up being split in favour of Cindy Moon (I do love Silk), Wonder Woman and others. But I can’t ignore the fact that I’ve always loved Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon

I may’ve liked Teen Titans, but I was never on Team Starfire, it’s fine if you are but to me I have always been in with Dick and Babs. Not only do they have excellent banter but they gel well on and off of crime fighting, no matter how many times DC break them apart (like seriously, how many times do you have to try Bruce and Barbara until you realise that it creeps people out?) they always find each other again someway down the line, they are one of DC’s best couples and while they may never get a definitive ending because of the nature of comics, I still love that there’s a relationship of two strong individuals who can stand as equals and continue to keep their charm and wit after years of being together. When I was young, decades ago as it pains me to type, Digimon was the prime competitor against Pokémon’s tidal wave. Its anime had an awesome opening, more characters with some deeper themes and a quicker pacing. While many could quickly connect to Tai or Matt for their leaderlike attitude or Joe and Izzy for their intelligence or Mimi and Sora for their determination, I gravitated towards TK, a child who had room to grow and the greatest of potential, so when the Dark Masters came in we saw one of my oldest ships take form, Takari

TK and Kari’s pairing was popular that it managed to carry on into Adventure 02 and we got plenty of lovely moments in TRI (though they shorthanded both by having Ophanimon quickly fused and Seraphimon - one of the strongest Digimon - digivolve as backup in a Sora episode). 02′s epilogue is of course a sore spot we can hope Kizuna retcons because these two have been through thick and thin and their bond is clear. Even as they reach their late teens and TK has become master of hats and joined Matt’s band, they still hang out, banter and tease but they still are comfortable to hold each other’s hand and be vulnerable with one another too. Digimon may’ve been a contender, but Pokémon was still the clear winner, even to this day it is one of the most popular franchises in the world. The anime may be an up and down slope (current series seems a tad boring, 10 episodes before Ash caught a Pokémon, plus I don’t like that Ash won in Alola and now thinks he doesn’t have to try) but you can never take away the nostalgia, or the ships. I’ve shipped many in Pokémon in various media; Mallow x Lillie and Jessie x James in the anime, Ruby x Sapphire in the Manga, Looker x Anabel in the games (with Emma being their adoptive daughter dammit Looker you could’ve taken her with) among others and from Pokémon comes the oldest ship I’ve ever shipped, Pokéshipping

Before I even knew what Shipping was I shipped this, Misty may also be mostly the reason for my attraction to redheads but that’s neither here nor there. People may not like it, may prefer some of the softer spoken female (or male) companions Ash has had or feel they’ve grown out of it, but not me. I loved Misty’s feistiness and determination but also the fact that she could reign Ash in (sometimes) to make him think things through, as much as Misty was a companion to Ash she was a rival, a teacher and a supporter of his goal, but she also had her own goals which she fought for as well. They may bicker but they have also had tender moments as well and even with Misty’s return in the excellent Sun and Moon episodes they had their chemistry is palpable. To me, Ash and Misty were kindred spirits and the feeling has never changed since. So with another year of Valentine’s Day going the way it usually does, I’d like a moment to thank these ships, and all my other ships I didn’t have the space to mention, for being something that brings out happiness and a soft joy deep within my being, and for all the fanartists and fanfic writers that bring that love to life Happy Valentine’s Day
