49) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about? 

YES. Oh wow, those first discoveries of fanfic. I discovered fanfic through an academic article about Harry Potter fanfic and was all *investigative eye emoji* about it. I read SO MUCH fic, and it was the greatest. My first fic was Telanu’s ‘Tea Series’ (no longer online), one of the first Snarry fics that was ever published. I read pretty much all the Snarry I could find, on Walking the Plank, Silver Snitch, recs from Painless J, the Snarry Reader recs, the stuff on Snape Potter...I resisted Drarry for such a long time but I pretty much ran out of fic and I was still lurking so didn’t know where to go for new Snarry. I had already got into the enemy slash dynamic through Snarry so I tentatively tried out a few fics on Hex Files and various rec lists. My first Drarry was fearless diva’s Tissues of Silver, closely followed by Alaana Fair’s Desperately Seeking Someone.

The thing is, I almost didn’t want to answer this question on tumblr because there are many aspects of early fic which readers today find jarring. Some of the stuff is fascinating, for example looking at where fics took canon before we had a complete book canon, or examining popular tropes like Snape Manor, a read of Snape as from a similar economic background to the Malfoys, in pre-Half Blood Prince stuff, and the way assumptions of class impacted the way his character was written and interpreted. However, sometimes the older classics can be problematised or denigrated for doing things writers today might get side-eyed for. Like any literature, fanfic had certain conventions and approaches that have changed over time, and HP fic has been on the interwebs since around 1999. That’s almost two decades ago. There might be things that would feel jarring to someone reading today who is relatively new to the fandom and used to recent output, but a lot of those early fics, fests and archives helped to build the fandom we have today, working through strikethrough, boldthrough, ff.net deletions, establishing AO3 and so on. It’s all part of the fabric of the community we have now, and I am so grateful to the people who put in place those building blocks so we have this space today.

Good thing, too, as someone's trying to kill him. Not wanting to lose their star witness, the Ministry sends over Super!Auror Harry Potter, who promptly moves into Draco's estate to help keep the Ministry's silver boy safe.
