One of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Final Projects, Modeled After His Guggenheim Design, Sells for $6 Million
The Architect Briefly Stayed in the Connecticut Home While Overseeing the Construction of the Museum.

A Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home in the town of New Canaan, Connecticut, has sold for $6 million—25 percent below its asking price—to an undisclosed buyer. Called Tirranna, the 7,000-square-foot estate, built in 1955, is one of the famed architect’s largest residential projects, and one of his last.
Most recently selling for $4.8 million in 2018, Tirranna is among the higher-priced Frank Lloyd Wright properties on record, as well as one of the most expensive properties sold in New Canaan in the last year. It is one of a handful of Wright properties to enter the market recently, which also includes the Mrs. Clinton Walker House in California, his only oceanfront home.

Tirranna was listed by Coldwell Banker Global Luxury’s Albert Safdie and Marsha Charles, who closed on the property January 22. “It was a rare honor to represent Tirranna,” they said, “a true gem of mid-century architectural history that will continue to provide a Zen-like experience blending nature and comfort to its latest inhabitants.”
Though small in size, the idyllic town of New Canaan became a hotbed of architectural experimentation in the 20th century. It’s estimated that, between 1948 and 1973, upwards of 100 Modernist homes were built in the area by architectural greats who included Marcel Breuer (creator of the Whitney Museum of American Art on the Upper East Side), John M. Johansen, and Eliot Noyes. They were part of the Harvard Five, a group of architects who settled in New Canaan in the 1940s after graduating from the university’s design department. Philip Johnson’s famed Glass House, too, calls New Canaan home. Like Wright, they all emphasized simplicity, functionality, and honesty of materials.
Tirranna gets its name from an Australian Aboriginal word meaning “running waters,” referring to a nearby stream and recalling the architect’s most iconic residential project, Fallingwater in Pennsylvania. The classic Usonian abode features seven bedrooms, eight and a half bathrooms, and a wine cellar converted from a bomb shelter. Tirranna’s interior features Philippine mahogany paneling, Cherokee-red Colorundum concrete flooring, and a clerestory for an abundance of natural light. The architect also provided large windows that look out onto nature. In 1958, an observatory was added above the master bedroom.

The land immediately surrounding the home was transformed into gardens by horticulturist Frank Okamura and landscape architect Charles Middeleer. Okamura is credited with reviving the bonsai tradition in America through his decades-long work at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and his book The Art of Bonsai. A greenhouse, circular pool, tennis court, barn, playhouse, and a one-room guesthouse can also be found on the grounds.
Wright himself briefly stayed in the home while overseeing the construction of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum some 40 miles away in Manhattan. With its semicircular style, Tirranna mirrors the spiral concrete ramp that makes the Guggenheim one of the most recognizable pieces of architecture in the city. The greenhouse of Tirranna was even built using scalloped-glass windows left over from the Guggenheim project.

Right Or Wrong – Two Frank Lloyd Wright Designed Homes!
The most famous architect in American history, Frank Lloyd Wright designed over 1,000 structures, including Fallingwater, Johnson Wax Headquarters and the Guggenheim Museum. Roughly 50 miles north of New York City in the middle of Lake Mahopac on its own island, there is a stunning house cantilevered over the water that has had its share of controversy over whether or not it was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Originally listed in 2012 at $20 million, it is back on the market priced at $9.95 million.
Known as the Massaro House, the original owner of the island, Ahmed Chahroudi, engaged Wright in 1950 to draw the plans of the main house and guest house. When they were completed, Chahroudi realized the cost to build was far over his $50,000 budget, so he had only the 1,200-square-foot guest house built.
The plans were passed on to the next owner, Joseph Massaro, who purchased the island in 1996 for $700,000. Massaro wanted to build the main house but didn’t care for some elements in the plans. The Frank Lloyd Wright foundation required $450,000 to rework the plans and supervise the construction in order to certify the house under the Wright name.
This was untenable to Massaro, so he hired Thomas A. Heinz, an architect-contractor and Wright historian to do the house instead. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation took Massaro to court obtaining a judgement that he was only allowed to describe the main house design as “Wright inspired,” though the guest house was an original Wright.
Built in 2007 on the 10.37-acre Petra Island, the 8,415-square-foot house has four bedrooms and two baths, between it and the guest houses there are six bedrooms and four baths. Also on the property is the original 1950 Wright-certified guest house, a second guest house, tea house, beach, dock and helipad.
Many Wright features are immediately recognized such as the large fireplace in the room jutting out over the water (there are six fireplaces in all), grouped skylights, built-in furniture, close to nature with the house built around and including boulders, and the use of wood throughout the home. Changes that Massaro made were adding air conditioning and radiant heat and the safety feature of chimney caps, which Wright detested.
Massaro also removed a stairwell that ran from the deck to the shore. Wright’s designs would not pass today’s building codes as initially drawn.
Used as a private getaway or for holding events, the island is only 50 miles from Manhattan and can be accessed by car, boat and helicopter. Lake Mahopac is a 587-acre lake to enjoy fishing, boating, jet skis and wave runners with skating and ice boating in the winter. A number of the island’s residents commute to Manhattan.
Margaret Harrington and Monica Webster of Douglas Elliman are the island’s listing agents.

4 Frank Lloyd Wright Homes for Sale (and They’re Awesome)
It’s the 150th birthday anniversary of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and some of his architectural pieces of history are up for sale. We get to do a virtual open house and peak inside four Frank Lloyd Wright homes for sale.
All of Wright’s homes were designed using his theory of “organic architecture.” He wanted his homes to strike the harmonious balance between architecture and nature. The best example of his work is Fallingwater, built in 1935.
Fallingwater, Wright’s most famous architectural masterpiece. Image: Fallingwater
You can pick up one of his properties if you’ve got at least $1 million to spare. Here are four Frank Lloyd Wright homes for sale right now:
1. Stuart Richardson Residence | New Jersey
The home is designed to be hexagonal both inside and out. Image: The Robin Seidon Team
The living room is framed by 15 glass doors. Image: The Robin Seidon Team
This is the most affordable of the bunch. The 1,800 square foot, 3-bedroom, 2-bath home is listed at $995,000. It’s one of just a few of his hexagonal homes. Built in 1951, all the walls inside are angled at 60 and 120 degrees.
2. Sherman Booth House | Illinois
Three stories tall with a rooftop deck. Image: Chicago Business
Lots of glass and windows to enjoy the beautiful garden views. Image: Chicago Business
This one’s located in East Glencoe, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Built in 1916 for Wright’s attorney, it’s Prairie School in design and three stories high with a rooftop deck. This 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom home is listed for $1.9 million. The gardens are beautifully landscaped.
3. Paul and Helen Olfelt Residence | Minnesota
The home’s striking exterior. Image: Coldwell Banker
All the furniture is original and designed by Wright. Image: Coldwell Banker
Located in Saint Louis Park and listed at $1.295 million, this one is a gem. It’s the first time it’s been listed since it was built in 1958 and comes with all original fixtures and furniture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It’s a 3-bedroom, 2-bath, 2,647 square feet home set on nearly 4 private acres that feel like you’re in the countryside. But you’re minutes from downtown Minneapolis.
4. Tirranna | Connecticut
Beautiful property in New Canaan, CT. Image: Houlihan Lawrence

This is the priciest of the Frank Lloyd Wright homes for sale, but it sits above a waterfall! “Tirranna” is the Aboriginal word for “running waters.” The home is set in 15 acres of New Canaan woodland. It features seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, and is listed for $7.2 million. The U-shaped design with glass walls showcasees the stunning gardens, all created by Frank Okamura, landscape architect for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Greenwood Lake Resort Home, New York
Greenwood Lake Resort Home, New York Real Estate For Sale, Orange County Castle, Images
Greenwood Lake Resort Home in New York

The Castle, NY
The Castle on Greenwood Lake in New York is now back on the market at $12.75 million
Location: Orange County, New York, USA
Source: TopTenRealEstateDeals.com
More unique than almost anything else on the real estate market today and expansive enough for family, extended family, teammates and favorite friends, retired New York Yankees star and first-ballot MLB Hall of Famer, Derek Jeter, has dropped the price on his castle-like resort home on Greenwood Lake in New York by $2 million. Previously listed in 2018 at $14.75 million, it is now back on the market at $12.75 million.
Known locally as The Castle and originally built in 1903 by New York Doctor Rudolph Gudewill for his wife, the estate is actually two castles – the master castle with a connected tower and a guest castle.
After Gudewill died, John and Julia Tiedemann bought the castle, where they lived with their 13 children including an adopted son, William Connors. Connors was later to become Jeter’s maternal grandfather. Jeter spent many of his childhood summers at the castle swimming, playing sports and chores.
The Tiedemanns sold the estate in 1996, but when it came back on the market in 2002, Jeter bought it and began a long and expensive restoration.
Greenwood Lake, where the borders of New Jersey and New York join and just 50 miles from New York City, has been a popular tourist destination since the late 1800s attracting wealthy vacationers and celebrities such as Greta Garbo and Babe Ruth. Ruth had a home in Greenwood and spent his free time speeding around the lake in his boat and stopping at Maplewood Inn for a drink or two or three. Always known as a place to spot celebrities, the lake has attracted its share of New York Yankee players and fans.
The seven-mile lake, restaurants and rural atmosphere attract frequent weekend visitors from New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia.
Encompassing 12,590 square feet of living space between the main and guest castles, the Jeter compound includes four indoor kitchens, one outside kitchen and an extra-large, infinity-edged pool. Living areas include six bedrooms, seven full and five half baths, great room, four kitchens, multiple stone fireplaces including one on the terrace, dens, game room, sunroom, formal dining room, office, gym and family room with a bar.
The turret opens out to a widow’s walk, which is duplicated on the guest house, providing beautiful lake and wood views. There are extensive gardens, a Statue of Liberty replica and a four-car garage. Even with a large number of guests, there is always a quiet place to spend some alone time.
With his busy schedule as part owner and CEO of the Miami Marlins, Derek oversees the day-to-day operations of the team that surprised most baseball experts by making the MLB playoffs in 2020 and then knocked out the Chicago Cubs in the first round.
Jeter also manages a plethora of other business interests and since his marriage to model Hannah Davis in 2016, is also a family man helping to raise their two young children. Unable to spend time in his castle on the lake, it makes sense to pass it on to a family who will enjoy it as much as his own family has over the years.
The listing agent is Mary Lovera with Wright Bros. Real Estate, Nyack, New York.
