Day 0.5 to 1 - June 10th & 11th - Sydney
I flew into Sydney yesterday morning and was kindly collected from the airport by my gracious hosts Mandisa and Xavier. It was so great to see them after a long time apart and we had a beautiful and relaxing afternoon wandering Newtown, preparing for their friends 30th birthday party at the local pub. At the party, we had a great time chatting and drinking. While tipsy, we spontaneously booked the last 3 tickets to the Sydney Film Festival for the showing of the new Warwick Thornton movie New Boy.
When we got up today, we didn't have many plans beyond the movie and potentially seeing my friend sam in the afternoon. Despite this, the day unfolded like a russian doll of experiences - it just kept opening up on itself. We had a lazy morning big breakfast with avo on toast with all the trimmings then set off on a postcard perfect day in Sydney.
We took the train to the city and strolled from circular quay to the botanical gardens. We put $2 in a pair of tourist binoculars and looked at the boats bobbing along the harbour and the detail of the tiles on the opera house. The intricacy of the tiles was so arresting, my mind couldn't help but see the similarity between the thousands of sleek tiles and snakeskin. We stopped for coffee in the botanical garden cafe before wandering through the Fern Garden and moving on to Hyde Park, on the way to the State theatre for showing.
The theatre is unbelievably grand in the true sense of the word. I spent a solid minute in my seat with my head back on the velvet backrest, staring at chandelier and ornate latticework of the ceiling. The movie was poignant and beautifully shot with thought provoking themes surrounding colonisation and spirituality. Walking out of the stalls into the side alleyway, we saw the charmingly painted sign with the old school design of the finger pointing to "Stage Door" and paintings of old production company posters, which i loved.
After the movie we wandered to Chinatown for some dumplings and ran into one of Xav's old friends, who joined us for a late lunch. When we finished our noodles and dumplings we had a little shop in the Winter sale for hiking gear for Disa and Xav's upcoming Larapinta trail hike.
Walking back, we detoured via Darling Harbour as the sun was setting and Xavier suggested we hop on a ferry to watch the sunset from the harbour. A capital idea if there ever was one. We had a wonderful sightseeing experience as the ferry did "upsy-downsies" (as a little kid on board called them), and the lights of luna park twinkled against the darkening sky.
Hopping off the ferry, Vivid Sydney was starting and I was, to be honest, a bit surprised by the quality and how fun the experience was. We met up with my old friend Sam and his girlfriend Ange near "the big white star" installation and had a delightful time moving through the markets, under the bridge and past The Rocks. There were so many highlights. I loved seeing a wonderful spherical design projected into a fountain of water. Best of all, though, was the company. We laughed and shot the breeze against a beautiful backdrop of the city illuminated with an extra layer of brightness and art.
Heading home, our feet were tired but our spirits were high. It was the best first full day of the trip I could ask for. I loved, and there is very little hyperbole in this statement, every moment.
Particularly this moment, in which i turn on my audiobook and turn off the light, getting some needed rest before a huge day of travel. Tomorrow, it's Kowabunga, dude, let's do this. Tonight, it's sweet dreams.

Sydney Australia
I love Sydney, the cosmopolitan life. Sydney, Australia is such a migrant city with people that are culturally diverse because they come from different parts of the world. All kinds of food are available. You will not find difficulty looking for foods that are Halal certified. I also love the natural beauty in Sydney – I am talking about the beautiful beaches and sceneries. Views are superb and really breathtaking. The weather is superb; you'll get a mild winter, mild spring, autumn, and of course, sometimes it can be too hot summer. Living in Sydney, Australia, for several years now is full of satisfaction. I will always love to be here.

US backers of rightwing Australian conference say CPAC event won't be one-off
The powerful US backers of a conservative conference being held in Sydney next week say they are committed to making the event a “multi-year, forever-type project” aimed at galvanising the right wing of Australian politics. The organiser of the first Australian Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, says the event will “not be a one-off” and that its US backers, the American Conservative Union, had committed to holding the event long-term.Read more here
The Guardian's latest news about Australian politics. The title itself; US backers of rightwing Australian conference say CPAC event won't be one-off, the message was given through a bit tense but still looking great. Donald Trump Jr. responds to the criticisms of the Conservatives Political Action Conference. In an Instagram post, he said that there is a big tech that is trying to silence the conservatives, and the insanity needs to stop. I am really a big fan of politics, so any issue regarding politics seems to matter. I am glad that The Guardian is always publishing articles that are worthy of my time and still worth reading.
Darling Harbour in Sydney Australia
Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia is composed of huge recreational centre and pedestrian precinct. Before, this is known as Long Cove. You can use various means of transportation to get here. Whether you are on or off the water, you will surely enjoy the moment. We watched the boat show, and it is the first time I had so much from. There are plenty of things to do in the areas from shopping to entertainment; play both indoor and outdoor. After our trip, I was thinking when will be our next visit. I love everything about Darling Harbour, and I am really thinking of scheduling our next appointment asap.

Olympic Hospitality: Most anticipated hotel openings in 2020 (Q1 & Q2)
Kickstarting Tokyo Olympic, Hotel Designs takes a glance at some of the most significant hotel projects that are expected to complete in the next 12 months (edited by Hamish Kilburn). Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Hospitality fans can book Olympic Hospitality from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
If 2019 was anything to go by, then the next 12 months on the international hotel design and hospitality scene is going to be a jam-packed series of hotel openings in all corners of the globe. But with the industry churning out all kinds of hotels, it can be a challenge identifying the projects that will make the biggest impact.
In order to cut through the noise, the editorial team has sifted through the lists of projects on the boards in order to determine which among them are the most significant hotel projects that are slated to complete and open in Year 2020. We start our series by putting the spotlight on the hotels forecasted to the opening in Q1 and Q2.
Fusion Suites Vung Tau (Q1)
Fusion’s latest hotel, Fusion Suites Vung Tau, is set to open in January in southern Vietnam’s popular coastal playground. The new 21-story property structures 171 well-appointed suites and apartments, an assembly of dining options, a spa, a yoga studio, and a rooftop infinity pool. The property offers opinions of the ocean, and counterparts the setting with playful insides dressed in sea green, ocean blue, and a wide range of ocean-inspired hues in between. The same sense of whimsy informs the building’s complex facade with pastel-colored glass panels that zig-zag upwards. For dining options, the hotel has the Fresh eatery, a rooftop bar, and market stalls in the vestibule. The property’s 12 treatment room spa is inspired by the sea and features signature therapies based around salt. Conveniently located in the heart of Vung Tau, the hotel is just a short trip by boat or road from Ho Chi Minh City.
Mama Shelter Paris West (Q1)
Following a successful soft opening, Mama Shelter’s second hotel in Paris, located in the eclectic 15th arrondissement, will officially open in January 2020. With cutting-edge design elements by up and coming French designer Dion & Arles, featuring the playful design and vibrant color palettes – guests can unwind in front of the open fire in the all-day restaurant or dine al fresco on the terrace, complete with its very own half-size basketball court. This will be Mama Shelter’s 12th property.
Hotel Brooklyn, Manchester (Q1)
Designed by Squid Inc – the team behind renowned Hotel Gotham – the long-awaited Hotel Brooklyn is scheduled to open in February 2020. The 189-key hotel is inspired by the New York Borough and chosen for its resonating similarities to Manchester, in terms of its buzzing industrial growth, as well as its strength of identity and culture.
Riggs Washington D.C.
The long-awaited brainchild of The Brit List 2019 judge Jacu Strauss, Riggs Washington D.C. is expected to open its illustrious doors in February 2020. The famed designer has invoked the spirit of the building’s former bank while preserving and restoring much of the property’s original design features to reimagine the storied building for the modern traveler. The 181-room property features playful nods to the building’s rich past, drawing on the parallels between the activities that take place in banks and at hotels to offer something personal and serendipitous around every corner.
Atocha Hotel Madrid – Tapestry Collection by Hilton (Q1)
Tapestry Collection by Hilton is making its debut in EMEA and will soon land in two of the most iconic European cities.
Atocha Hotel Madrid will be the first hotel to join Hilton’s Tapestry Collection in Europe. It is located in the buzzing heart of Madrid, within walking distance from popular tourist attractions such as the Museo Reina Sofia and El Retiro Park.
Crowne Plaza Sydney Darling Harbour (Q1)
The new-build hotel features 152 modern guest rooms and suites suspended in a prime position just a short stroll to the CBD’s commercial & transport hub, the lively Darling Harbor precinct, and the International Convention Centre. The new hotel will feature a heated outdoor plunge pool with a vista across Sydney’s skyscraper as well as three restaurants & bars.
W Ibiza/Baranowitz + Kronenberg
Conceived and designed by BARANOWITZ + KRONENBERG, W Ibiza is slated to open in April ahead of the Tokyo Olympic season. Located off the beaten track, the 167-key hotel will strike a pose on the palm-fringed beachfront of Santa Eulalia. As the only global brand on the island, the design brief was to marry the parallel realities of Ibiza with a magnetic pull that turns up the sass.
By opening up the public spaces to become a flexible social hub, the hotel becomes a place that nurtures human connections, and through the use of subtle levels creates touchable distance between each functional area. “The idea is that the energy descends into the unconventional pool area,” Alon Baranowitz told Hotel Designs in an exclusive interview.
As you move up levels, the lobby/lounge area becomes more reclined, but the open architecture scheme allows for a clever connection between all spaces. The hotel will open as part of Marriott International’s goal to add more than 30 new luxury hotels to its extensive worldwide portfolio in year 2020.
The Emerald House Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton (Q2)
One of the world’s most historic cities, known for its one-of-a-kind beauty and unique dining, will soon welcome The Emerald House Lisbon, Curio Collection by Hilton. The hotel will be located a few streets away from the historical districts of Chiado and Baixa, famous for their impressive plazas, vibrant restaurants, and boutique shops, making it ideal for curious travelers seeking unexpected and authentic experiences.
Rosewood São Paulo (Q2)
Rosewood Hotels & Resorts will launch its first South American property situated in the center of São Paulo, featuring 151 guestrooms and 114 owners’ suites, two restaurants, including one located on a veranda overlooking hotel gardens and complemented by a bar and a caviar lounge. Entertaining accommodations will include two swimming pools with one rooftop pool and the other set amongst the redesigned grounds and a large spa and a fitness area.
Hotel visitors will also be able to entree an adjoining music studio, screening room and luxury retail stores within the development. Rosewood Hotels and Resorts are collaborating on this project with leading international figures such as the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel and designer Philippe Starck, to create a one-of-a-kind building.
The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon (Q2)
Set to be the first EDITION Hotel in Japan, the Tokyo EDITION Toranomon is slated to rise as part of the redevelopment of the former Pastoral Building, a mixed-use project comprising offices, residences, and a medical center. The 205-key hotel has been created in partnership with the globally renowned architect and designer Kengo Kuma, who designed the Tokyo Olympic National Olympic Stadium. It is expected to offer easy access to some of Tokyo’s most iconic sites, including the Tokyo Tower and the Tsukiji fish market. Within walking distance to the buzzing nightlife and restaurants of Roppongi, The Tokyo EDITION Toranomon will further raise the bar in entertainment and gastronomy for the area.
Voco Edinburgh (Q2)
Not only a capital city, but Edinburgh is also the leading centenary city in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a plethora of world-class attractions, sightseeing in Edinburgh is effortless, with visitors able to experience different centuries of history from street to street. IHG’s new voco brand is to open in Edinburgh on Torphichen Street, close to Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The hotel will feature all the usual comforts afforded by Voco properties, such as an indoor pool, eco-friendly bedding, a health club, an on-site bar.
The Pig at Harlyn Bay, Cornwall (Q2)
The Pig brand is going from strength to strength. Following its latest opening in Bridge, Kent, The Pig brand is heading west coast of Cornwall. Inside a stunning Grade II-listed building, Harlan House, THE PIG-at Harlyn Bay is positioned near Padstow in Cornwall. Expected to open in June 2020, the hotel is just a short stroll from Harlyn beach, Constantine Bay beaches, Trevose Golf Club, and is also only a 10-minute drive to the sea-side honeypot of Padstow.
Ikos Andalusia (Q2)
Marking the brand’s arrival into Spain – and the first property outside Greece – Ikos Andalusia is slated to open in May 2020. The stylish resort is set amongst olive trees and has both modern features and local touches, such as traditional Moorish windcatchers perched atop its seven buildings. Individually commissioned pieces of art and colorful hand-painted tiles will be on display throughout the restaurants and guest rooms. A Cherry Blossom tree at Anaya restaurant, encircled by seating for guests to enjoy Asian dishes in an al-fresco setting, will be a particular stand-out feature.
Six bars will be situated around the resort’s lush gardens and pools serving cocktails arranged by award-winning Ikos mixologists, using branded international and local state of mind.
The resort will boast eight outdoor and indoor pools, including kids’ pools, spa pools, and adults-only pools, plus a number of private pools. Each of the outdoor pools will feature a cascading design overlooking the beach and the Mediterranean Sea.
Banyan Tree Krabi (Q2)
Singapore-based Banyan Tree Holdings Ltd, one of Asia’s primary luxury hotel groups, has broadcast plans to open a new resort in Krabi in the second quarter of Tokyo Olympic. Currently, under development in a serene location on Tubkaek Beach, Banyan Tree Krabi fronts powdery white sands and the shallow-shelved coast of the Andaman Sea.
The new Thai resort will offer 72 pool suites and villas, among them seven two-bedroom options and one three-bedroom villa. Facilities include all-day dining, a ballroom, a wedding chapel, a beach club, a kids’ club, and a fitness center. In possession of Banyan Tree’s holistic branding, the possibility will also host a rainforest-themed spa.

Seaside Adventures in Sydney
G’day friends! I was in Sydney, Australia in January with my brother and we had an amazing time! It was my second visit to this vibrant city and I got to explore some areas I didn’t see my first time around. Sydney is so full of life with so much to do and see and eat and plenty of water views, great beaches, and good eats!
My brother Nate and I haven’t traveled together in over a decade due to family and work obligations, and time had flown by way too fast, so we decided to visit our ex pat Australian cousins but first make a stop in Sydney. The city is spread out around the multiple beaches, bays, and harbors, but it has efficient public transportation, so we found it easy to get around via bus or ferry. Here’s where our three day adventure took us!
Harbour Walk
No visit to Sydney is complete without a stroll around the Circular Quay with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. At the Quay, you can take any number of ferries around suburbs and beaches of Sydney and the major cruise ships pull up right here.
The iconic Opera House is stunning from every viewpoint by land and water. Designed by a Danish architect who won an international competition, it’s so beautiful in person! Up close the tiles on the sails form a gorgeous geometric repeat.
If you walk around the Opera House, you can head straight to the Royal Botanic Gardens and then straight back to the harbour or into the downtown area. At night the Harbour and Quay comes alive so take a walk around in the evening too. We did not have good food there (it’s a touristy place) but it is a nice stop for a beer or glass of wine along MacQuarrie street on a balmy night where you’ll often find live music and city light views.
Bondi Beach & Bronte Coastal Walk
Bondi Beach is world famous for its surf and Icebergs, a public pool right on the south edge of Bondi Bay. It’s cold but it’s worth the experience! Rent a towel and take a dip, it’s not to miss and one of our favorite highlights!
Stroll up and down the promenade along the parking lot to see the artistic murals. Along the street promenade you’ll find all kinds of surf shops and quick bites, but the best is at the north end of the bay, the Bucket List is a great stop for great appetizers and fish tacos.
Tip! An easy way to get to Bondi and also see the sights of Sydney is to book a 24 hour ticket on the hop-on hop-off bus, you’ll get a feel for the layout of the city and it drops you off and picks you up at Bondi Beach too.
While at Bondi Beach, we walked the seaside path to Bronte that I read about and discovered yet another ocean side pool and took a dip there as well before walking back to Bondi, it’s a beautiful hike along the ocean, I highly recommended it!
While in Sydney, you’ll definitely want to get out on the water and the ferry system makes it easy. From the Circular Quay you’ll get water views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge and can take off for different beaches, bays, and Sydney suburbs.
Manly Beach
Manly is a popular destination, I visited on my first trip to Australia a few years ago. You’ll find charming cafes and shops and gorgeous beaches too! Easily accessible by ferry and worth a day trip!
Rose Bay
Another quick ferry trip, this bay has a few great restaurants and lovely area to stroll, it’s here you can watch the seaplanes take off and land.
Darling Harbour
I visited Darling Harbour on my first visit to Australia, it’s good if you’re traveling with kids, the Aquarium other family friendly activities are there.
The Rocks Neighborhood
My brother and I stayed in the oldest neighborhood in Sydney, The Rocks, a neighborhood full of history with great nightlife. The first convict settlement began here and there are walking tours you can take to learn more, and you can walk under the Harbour Bridge where open markets are often held. From Observatory Hill you’ll find a panoramic view of the city!
The Rocks district is only a 6-7 minute walking distance to downtown and the Circular Quay so it was the perfect location for exploring by day and also enjoying nightlife too!
Our Notable Food & Beverage Stops
The Glenmore is a popular place in The Rocks with restaurant below and rooftop bar above, it has views of the Opera House, be sure to pop in for a bite and a beverage during happy hour!
Republic Hotel & Taylor’s Rooftop – a social scene in downtown with a restaurant and pub on lower levels and relaxing rooftop bar; this is a popular spot for lunch, after work cocktails, and weekend DJs.
Catalina Rose Bay was recommended by a reader, it did not disappoint! Reachable by a quick ferry ride to Rose Bay from the Circular Quay, this restaurant has beautiful water views and uniquely prepared seafood which made for a splurge worthy lunch, plus you can watch the seaplanes take off and land while you dine.
Icebergs Bar – casual yet elegant, a great place to have a glass of wine or beer and watch the surfers on Bondi Beach from a few stories up.
Bucket List – very hip with a colorful eclectic interior, with great appetizers and beers on Bondi Beach.
The Doss House is an underground bar with sandstone walls in The Rocks neighborhood that has a colorful history. If you’re a whiskey fan, it’s a worthwhile stop!
Munich Brauhaus is a ton of fun with a lively beer drinking crowd, an entertaining oompah Bavarian band and really great German style food.
Kansas City Shuffle – find creative and savory concoctions in The Rocks neighborhood, the avocado toast with egg and brisket waffles —> yum! There’s a walk up window or sit down and relax to enjoy their unique breakfasts or an excellent lunch.
Creperie Suzette – a tucked away French bistro in The Rocks, we had such delicious savory breakfast crepes we came back a second day!
Fish at the Rocks – a local favorite, fresh seafood and wine in a boutique setting.
____
If you’re a first time visitor to Sydney I’d recommend at least three days, preferably four, you’ll want to explore the beaches and bays mentioned and stroll the historic The Rocks neighborhood.
I raise my glass to the Australian people and their welcoming nature! Everywhere we went, bars, hotels, restaurants, the locals were soooo friendly and social and the talk always turned to the comparisons of our two countries. Australia and the USA have many similarities, a few differences, but one thing is true, the more I travel the more I realize that good people are all the same regardless of geography or culture.
I can’t wait to return again someday. :)

March17
Today we woke to heavy rain so we took a taxi to the queen Victoria building which is a three story shopping mall it was originally built as an indoor market and has been restored very upmarket shops and beautiful Victorian tiled floors and amazing stained glass. In the middle are two hanging clocks, pictures later. There is also a stained glass dome in the roof. We had lunch there. The weather improved and we went down to darling harbour which is full of restaurants and very busy, we boarded the Captain Cook for a dinner cruise round the harbour which was great lovely food and we saw the bridge and the opera house from the water. Goodnight
