"Cloud! You're back!"
Tumblr media
Tifa surged to her feet, almost knocking aside the chair she occupied while she took a little break from cleaning up some dishes. There was a little light in her eyes that only brightened for Cloud - and she happily received him warmly, stepping closer as if she wanted to embrace him. But, knowing his desire for personal space, she hesitated.

This place was all fake, somehow. Unreal. Shinra had spared no expense to recreate this town... even hired the actors, paid to live here. The memories were real, but sometimes... lately, increasingly, she began to doubt her own mind. She looked over at Cloud. Her eyes welled with tears, then she looked away.
Her head reeled with his words; he couldn't sleep without her? "Yeah. Hard to sleep in a place that I know shouldn't exist... I know I didn't imagine the flames. The screams. I just.. I can't sleep here alone. They have the balls to take everything away from us, and then turn around and pretend it didn't happen. It's so cruel."
Her eyes burned, and she couldn't help but lean closer to her old friend, her head leaning toward his unarmored shoulder. That felt better. The closeness and warmth of his skin under her cheek.
"I just need... some peace... for once."

[continued from Here]
".... Hm. Not without you there, too." He watched her, wondering just what was going on to have her stay up this late, and away from everyone else. There were a few guesses, but he did not want to think about any of that, right now. Instead, his focus was entirely on her, and he moved to sit right next to her on the tower, glancing over only after a short few seconds. "... Can't sleep?"
It was strange, this feeling. Felt like home, almost, being with her like this, in the same place as all those years ago. Though, every time he'd look at her, now, it sent a different sort of feeling running through him. Enough of a commotion within that he'd have to glance away every time she looked in his direction, trying to act all cool-headed. He leaned back a bit, folding his arms across his chest as the breeze went on by. "Brings back memories, huh..."

[Cloud to Tifa] ❛ i’m not leaving you out here alone. ❜
"Huh?" Tifa, startled out of indulgent reverie, pulled away, looking up. The stars were especially vivid tonight against the curtain of black... and she couldn't remember the last time she had bothered to stop and look at them. Living in Midgar had stolen the wonder from her heart, broken the child that used to love daydreaming about what lay beyond them.
She pulled the blanket around her shoulders. "Hey. It's okay... It's not like anyone is looking up here."
She craned her head up once again, raven dark hair brushed back from her brow, with the occasional ribbon of strands blowing in the wind. The windmill creaked and groaned as it always did, but something about it was wrong. Always wrong. Just like Cloud. It was him, sometimes... but then something was just... wrong.
She had come out here to think several minutes ago, and unbidden, finally alone with her worries, allowed herself to cry. Now he had come out, and she was heartsick to see him. They were going to check out the reactor in the morning; that fateful journey, trekking up Mt. Nibel. So many memories. So much pain. Was Cloud going to be ready...?
Was she?
"Y-You should be sleeping with the others."

It was hard to put her feelings into words. She spent so much of her life locking it inside, keeping her secrets. Keeping her heart guarded from the truth and the disappointment. She eased an errant bang behind her ear, eyes glancing toward him. His words... he sounded so sure of himself, in spite of his doubt. She pulled herself closer. He had never disappointed her.
She tilted her face up, eyes gleaming, before pressing her soft lips to his shoulder.
"Okay..."

Cloud was an odd one to put her mind at ease, considering the mystery and bizarre circumstances that threw them together. They weren't really friends, only neighbors, but suddenly thrown together again... they were close. More and more, she came to lean on him. In times of need, in times of sorrow... she turned to him, knowing that they shared this link. This trauma.
She stifled a sniffle, hoping her tears didn't fall on his skin and make him uncomfortable.
His words poured over her, washing her in soothing reassurance. "I know. As long as we're in this together... we won't give up." She smiled shakily, sliding her fingers around his arm to hold onto it. Her anchor to this place... to the past. To the uncertain future. "Thank you... Cloud."
