at the ocean shore, i stand alone
watching over the sands (and over the waves)
how could you do this to me?
(the cruelest tide, cruelest lie) washes over me
you know, we used to be close and deep in love
before you stabbed me in the heart
the pull to my tide, washing my troubles below
i really, really thought that our love would be true
i really loved you
i'm really, really caught, oh, caught up in this truth
didn't love me too
tidal pull, tidal force
it used to soothe but now it drowns
and the tide goes out, tide goes out
it pulls me down
Okay. So this one is about what happens between Splatoon 1 and 2, specifically the events covered by the Squid Sisters Stories. It uses motifs from Bomb Rush Blush and Tide Goes Out, as well as a cheeky lil Octavio motif at the end.
OKAY I need to talk about my Splatoon headcanon related to the songs Bomb Rush Blush and Tide Goes Out because OMFGOMFG
Let's start from the beginning...
Captain Craig Cuttlefish was in a romantic relationship with someone. Around the beginning of that relationship, he wrote the lyrics to a love song called Bomb Rush Blush. However, when the Great Turf War began, the relationship between him and his partner soured, and lyrics for a break up song were also written, that song being titled Tide Goes Out. Neither songs were finished, only having lyrics and names. That is until...
Flash forward to MANY years in the future, cousins Callie and Marie are going through the grandfather's old things from the war. There they find two incomplete songs. They then decide to complete them.
I know I haven’t written anything for like a week so have this rant about my opinions on some Splatoon songs.
Calamari Inkantation - I love the first 2 versions, it’s just the anthem of Splatoon. The third isn’t bad, but I don’t like that they changed the lyrics (Ik it’s gibberish but you can really tell a difference) Plus, Nintendo released an official lyric video of Calamari Inkantation and it honestly just feels odd to hear something else. 10/10
Bomb Rush Blush - I actually didn’t like this until hearing it quite a few times. Perhaps it was unfamiliarity but I love it now. It’s so energetic to the point it’s like I don’t have mental illnesses when I listen to it. 9/10
Tide Goes Out - I LOVE IT. 10/10 Marie uses a singing technique that we use in certain traditional Japanese styles and it’s such a chill song. I think it’s supposed to be sad but I personally feel like hopping around when listening to it.
Fly Octo Fly - 7.5/10 It’s a good song but isn’t really my vibe. I just think the melody is really overshadowed but extra little things and I don’t really like that style. I know a lot of other people like tho.
Ebb and Flow - Another 10/10. I love how apparent Marina’s singing is and the sparkles Pearl adds to the entire composition. The contrast of the two makes it so perfect. Also, I think what really makes it one of the best songs in the franchise is the feeling of euphoria when you stop the world from falling apart. I can feel the emotions tied into piece.
(I forgot the title of this other one from Splatoon 2. It’s the one where Marina sings then Pearl gets a rap solo part and says “Ha cha cha!” + like a crowd or something chanting.
Anarchy Rainbow - So fucking good. 10/10 What I love about this (and many others) is the cultural diversity within the song. Shiver is Japanese (festival style I think) Frye is South Asian, Indian I believe, and Big Man with his Brazilian Samba. It really makes it feel like an anarchy, where there’s no rules, just freedom.
Fins in the Air - 8/10 I’ve listened to this a few times. Shiver’s singing is spot on, and the combination between Frye’s and Big man’s parts is a really good addition. It’s exciting, what Splatoon is all about as a game.
