ATTENTION SPAN IN CLASSROOMS
As a teacher, I need 5 mins to prep class followed by a 5 min activity to test previous knowledge. Then, I have a 20-minute actual teaching, followed by a quiz/ group activity to recap and final HW instructions.
So, essentially, the 12 min attention span can be stretched to 20 mins by interactive and interesting methods of teaching.
A 30 mins class is neither here nor there, and several classes in toto would only confuse children and make them more restless
(Mrs. Sangeetha Thyagarajan)
🎈🎈
Exegesis:
Now Let’s get into the methodology Ms Sangeetha madam outlined and explore how it can be adapted for different grade levels and subjects.
I’ll break it down based on the context you provided:
1. Preparation (5 minutes):
As a teacher, you allocate 5 minutes to prepare for the class. During this time, you organize your materials, review the lesson plan, and mentally prepare for the teaching session.
2. Previous Knowledge Assessment (5 minutes):
The next 5 minutes are dedicated to assessing students’ prior knowledge. This can be done through a quick quiz, discussion, or interactive activity related to the topic you’re about to teach. It helps activate their existing understanding and sets the stage for the upcoming lesson.
3. Actual Teaching (20 minutes):
The core teaching segment lasts 20 minutes. Here, you present new content, explain concepts, and engage students actively.
To make it effective and engaging:
¹VISUAL AIDS: Use visual aids like slides, diagrams, or videos to enhance understanding.
²INTERACTIVE ELEMENTS: Incorporate discussions, group work, or hands-on activities.
³REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES: Relate the material to real-world scenarios.
⁴QUESTIONING TECHNIQUES: Ask open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking.
⁵VARIETY: Vary your teaching methods to cater to different learning styles.
⁶RECAP AND QUIZ/GROUP ACTIVITY (5 minutes):
In the last 5 minutes, recap the key points covered during the teaching segment. Reinforce understanding by revisiting important concepts. Then, conduct a brief quiz or group activity to reinforce learning. This could be a quick brainstorming session, a problem-solving task, or a collaborative discussion.
⁷FINAL HOMEWORK INSTRUCTIONS:
Conclude the class by providing clear instructions for homework. Specify what students need to do, any resources they should refer to, and the deadline.
Now, let’s adapt this methodology for different grade levels:
🍁ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (Grades 1-5):
• Simplify language and use relatable examples.
• Incorporate games, storytelling, and visual aids.
• Keep activities short and engaging.
🍁MIDDLE SCHOOL (Grades 6-8):
• Build on prior knowledge.
• Encourage critical thinking and discussions.
• Use multimedia resources.
• Assign group projects or debates.
🍁HIGH SCHOOL (Grades 9-12):
• Dive deeper into concepts.
• Encourage independent research.
• Incorporate case studies and real-world applications.
• Discuss current events related to the subject.
Regarding the practice of finishing lessons before December and focusing on revisions and model exams from January onward, it has both pros and cons:
▪️Pros:
• Early completion allows more time for revision and exam preparation.
• Reduced stress during the exam season.
• Opportunity for in-depth understanding.
▪️Cons:
• Students may forget earlier concepts by the time exams arrive.
• Continuous revision might lead to monotony.
• Balancing revision with new learning is essential.
Ultimately, the effectiveness of this practice depends on the specific context, student needs, and the subject being taught. Flexibility and adaptability are key. As long as students are engaged, learning, and retaining knowledge, the approach can be considered successful.

As a crucial platform for players to showcase their skills and catch the attention of national selectors, the competition has not disappointed. The most recent round of matches delivered thrilling contests, match-winning displays, and moments of heartbreak. Rajat Patidar recently grabbed headlines with a blistering 159 off just 102 balls for Madhya Pradesh, dismantling Haryana’s bowling attack. This performance will boost his confidence as he looks to overcome past struggles with consistency. After his 13th first-class century, Patidar aims to build on his red-hot form. Meanwhile, Vijay Shankar, who had been off the radar for some time, made a triumphant return with an unbeaten hundred, helping Tamil Nadu secure a crucial draw against Chhattisgarh. The timing of Shankar’s knock made it all the more significant. Hyderabad’s Tanay Thyagarajan had a dream outing with the ball, dismantling Pondicherry’s lineup and guiding his team to a commanding win by an innings and 50 runs. Using variations smartly, Thyagarajan consistently struck at key moments to register impressive figures of 7/106. In the same fixture, Tanmay Agarwal displayed his batting ability with a stellar knock of 173, that showcased immense maturity. Meanwhile, Baroda skipper Krunal Pandya was in sublime form, smashing a brilliant 119 off 143 deliveries. His aggressive approach not only kept Odisha’s bowlers under pressure but also gave Baroda a crucial advantage in the contest, eventually helping them win. There were a few other stunning batting performances which caught the eye in this particular round of the Ranji Trophy. Himachal Pradesh skipper Rishi Dhawan led from the front, playing a marathon knock of 195 off 318 deliveries, rescuing his team from a precarious situation. The innings was Dhawan’s highest score in the Ranji Trophy, making it even more special under pressure. Meanwhile, Agni Chopra, son of renowned filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, continued his sensational form, smashing his second consecutive double-century against Manipur. Batting at No. 3 for Mizoram, Chopra has shown remarkable consistency and is steadily making a case for closer scrutiny from the selectors. Ayush Mhatre, the young Mumbai batter, also made headlines with a sensational performance. Mhatre notched up his maiden first-class century in style, scoring a commanding 176 against Maharashtra. His knock was filled with flair and maturity, leaving a lasting impression.
