2020: A [Fandom] Summary
2020 was a pretty rotten year, let’s face it, so now I’m safely away from it for good I’m stealing something @gumnut-logic mentioned to me and summarising all the things I managed to make this year!  Let’s start 2021 on a nice positive note... look at all the things I managed to do in the world of fandom!
FANFICTION:
In 2020...
I published 69 works, 66 of which are complete - all for Thunderbirds Are Go
Which came to a total of 268,863 words (Tumblr-only scenes and short stories came to a further 29,764 words which put my grand total up to 298,627!)
My most popular fic on tumblr was Out Patience with 60 notes (wow!!)
My most kudos’d fic on AO3 was Bedtme (Should Not Be 4am) with 62 kudos!
My most favourited fic on FFN was Grounded with 13 favourites!
My longest fic was Long Way From Home, which is incomplete but on 30,902 words published so far (longest complete fic was Grounded on 21,100 words)
(I have not included Tales From The Heart as everything that was posted this year on my blog was written and archived on AO3/FFN in 2017-2019)
FANART:
In 2020...
I posted 12 completed drawings, across 6 fandoms (and across 3 blogs...) - Bleach, D.Gray-Man, Marchen Awakens Romance, Naruto, One Piece and Thunderbirds Are Go
My most popular was “Return of the Dragon” with 114 notes (over a hundred!!! How???)
In conclusion, Tsari has been one very busy bee this year!  Links to everything are below the cut if anyone’s looking for a refresher, or thinks they missed something!
And because I am only human and love validation - if you have a favourite thing I’ve written (or drawn) this year, tell me what it is!  Can just be the  name (although if you want to tell me why that would make my night, I can’t lie), I’d just love to know what people particularly loved :D

A little bit of language in this one. Naughty Gordo :D
For @soniabigcheese cos she started it all with the prompt Gordon and Bedlam.
-o-o-o-
“I’m not being arrested, Gordon.” Virgil ran his hand through his hair and realised it was due a wash. “It’s only an inquiry.”
His aquanaut brother glared at him. “Virg, it’s dangerous. They obviously think you are guilty. What if they decide they want to hold you?”
“It’s the law Gordon. You want me to break the law? Because as soon as I do, then they win.”
His little brother let off a frustrated sound. Virgil had no doubt that if they weren’t flying Tracy Two, Gordon would be pacing. As it was, Grandma had words with him pre-take off just to get the aquanaut to sit in the co-pilot’s seat.
Virgil could appreciate Gordon’s point and if he was completely honest, he was scared. This could be life altering.
Permanently life altering.
But he had to find out what happened and the law had the right to summon him to question his actions.
He had to trust that law. Wainwright and company obviously had an agenda. But even they had to abide by the law, didn’t they?
“I don’t trust them. They want to take us down and they are trying to use you to do it.”
Virgil’s heart clenched. It all came back to him being the weak one, the vulnerability. His hands tightened on the yoke.
Gordon noticed and growled. “God, Virg, you’re not a weakness. For fuck’s sake, you’re the strongest of us all. Don’t fall for their crap. They want you doubting yourself.”
Well, in that case, it was working perfectly. Today had proven that beyond measure.
“Scott will fix this. Pen and Kayo will get the facts. Hell, Virg, you had groupies at the press conference. Did you see how many of them were dressed in green?”
Virgil blinked, his mind supplying his last sight of their supporters as several of them were led away by police. A riot had been averted, barely. Even on the security cam from inside Tracy Tower he could see the fire in that woman’s eyes.
And he didn’t even know her name.
“Jack has a lawyer on it. He’ll get them off.”
Virgil glanced at his brother and wondered when the fish had developed telepathy. Carnelian eyes caught his and his brother touched his arm. “We’ll work this out, Virg.”
Was it a weakness to rely on hope? Scott had stayed behind in Auckland to oversee the aftermath of the conference. They had had their chance to state their side of the story and it did appear that they at least had a few people asking questions.
Scott and Jack had been discussing the possibility of an interview with Ned Cook to follow up the conference...minus Virgil.
As with each time he thought of his conduct on the podium, Virgil groaned internally. All he had needed to do was stick to the script, but no, he’d opened his goddamned mouth and stuck his foot in it.
But the woman who had lost her son in New York, her eyes, her tears, her accusations...god, he had just wanted to help.
Hell, it was what he did.
Of course, the summons had been timed perfectly by the opposition. In front of the press and in a way that added to his apparent guilt.
Grandma had banned him from watching the newscasts.
Tracy Island appeared on the horizon and he had never been happier to see their refuge.
The thought that he might be taken away from the Island suddenly curdled in his belly.
He didn’t acknowledge Gordon, instead starting the approach sequence, checking windspeed and direction in preparation for landing.
The aquanaut had been bundled into Tracy Two with Virgil, Scott wanting nothing more than to get his vulnerable brother out of reach, home and safe. But certainly not by himself. No, military-trained Gordon had been directed to keep an eye on his brother. No doubt, to keep him secure while Scott cleaned up the mess.
They may say he wasn’t a weakness, but they were certainly acting like he was.
As he banked towards landing, Virgil both appreciated his amazing family and wished he wasn’t letting them down.
-o-o-o-
The days that followed the press conference were frustrating. With IR down for the count, four out of five operatives were out of work. This was a situation that rarely occurred and never for this length of time.
Scott returned to the Island with mixed emotions. The eldest had seen to the assistance of their supporters, posted bail where needed and sic’d their lawyers on the charges, paltry that they were.
John had identified the leader as none other than Susie Tedford, Ned’s younger sister. Scott managed to have a very revealing conversation with her, both about her brother and the value she saw in International Rescue. Hers wasn’t a fan club. They were a working emulation. Her small group went out of its way to assist people who had been caught in disasters.
The thing that baffled Virgil as well as his brothers was that the group had never applied for Tracy grant money to do what they did. They’d flown beneath Thunderbird Five radar, giving help, but refusing to ask for it. A hunt by one annoyed astronaut found a trail of good deeds scattered across the planet. The group had geographical divisions, for goodness sake. Each working quietly to help everyone they could.
Scott hunted down the director responsible for grant funding and had some serious words.
Money was thrown where it would be well used.
The cherry on top of the ice cream was the fact Susie was an fully qualified engineer. His brother’s frown at Virgil’s reaction when he mentioned her user name on the nets was justified.
Virgil had been a fan of ‘SturdySue’ for some years.
If there was one thing that he hoped he could get out of this whole mess was to meet the woman who saved lives by designing structures that withstood disasters. If Virgil babbled a bunch of engineeringese at his eldest brother when he asked why, so be it. Scott needed to be flummoxed occasionally.
But this bright spark was only one light amongst so many dark days. The rest of the week passed with no word from Penny or Kayo and Virgil began to despair. The Inquiry was set for the end of the following week. he was hoping to have some proof to back up his assurances that did not rely on his word or recordings. Independent verification was mandatory to get himself out of this mess.
To get his brothers out of this mess.
John continued to refuse to come down. Virgil went up there again, but only managed to get into a shouting match with the man. John rarely yelled, but he was obviously at his wits end. It only caused Virgil to worry more.
And Scott refused to order him down.
Because Scott was exactly the same. His eldest brother was driven, obsessive almost. He lived off every bit of information John could dig up. He had that same passion in his eyes that he had when on a rescue. He was focussed on saving someone.
On saving Virgil.
The launch of ‘World Rescue’ neared and Virgil watched as the world was taught to believe in the initiative and deride the ‘former’ International Rescue.
Gordon was particularly vocal on the matter, reading every report he could get his hand on, determined to find fault, suspicious of everything. His opinion of Wainwright defied the depth of Challenger Deep and he foretold dire results and a repeat of the Sentinel disaster.
Gordon literally hated her guts.
Virgil was of two minds himself. While their treatment of International Rescue was abominable, the idea of the GDF picking up some Rescue slack, wasn’t a bad one. After all, International Rescue would not have existed if there wasn’t a dearth of need in the first place.
As to the quality of the new organisation, well, they weren’t Thunderbirds and far from Tracys.
While there was little information on the equipment that would be used, the choice of a lead Colonel left much to be desired. Colonel Barrett had definitely been involved in the Sentinel fiasco - Gordon had raved for a full half an hour about that when he found out.
But Virgil was one to watch and see and step in when needed. He planned ahead when possible, kept his cool and anticipated when he could.
But no-one could have anticipated the rescue alarm going off on the morning of the launch.
No-one.

Inferno - Re-Review #49
Is this it’s first TV appearance? Yes, it is. The episode that never aired (in the UK) - even in the Series 2 re-runs, due to the Grenfell Tower fire. Now, it is finally being given its long awaited slot- Oh, no, hold fire.
We still can’t (or it’s been decided not to) air ‘Inferno’ in the UK because of the case being in court, being held off by the current situation. I do completely understand that - I’m not unsympathetic in anyway, but - for us fans - this is a gem of an episode that is being swept under the carpet, which is why I’m reviewing it in this series anyway, because it really does deserve it’s place in the lineup in my opinion. (And I’m a little OCD and on’t want it out of order too much so I’m doing it now not later. If they air it after ‘The Long Reach’ I’ll be annoyed)!
Anyhow, this is the first of two reviews for today and we get to start with a lovely tall tower. Now, when has that ever been a good idea? This episode bears similarities to ‘Towering Inferno’ and ‘City of Fire’ (TOS).

Today anyhow, this show of stupidity is all in the interest of breaking a record - because one man can’t handle the fact that someone built a building taller than his. That would be Mr Yost - I think his place in the above hall is aptly given.
“This is the Crystal Spire! The World’s first StarScraper. I designed it to be the world’s tallest structure, then they built a bigger one in Dubai. Tonight, ’m going to raise the  entire building by seven record shattering metres. Trust me, the lifting process is 100% safe.”
Do you know what else they said that about? Moving The Empire State Building in TOS’ ‘Terror In New York City’. We all know how that one ended.
Tumblr media
It did look pretty for a moment there, before you know, all the fires burst out and everything.
“Your job is to make sure those electrojacks hold. If they fail, fire will be the lest of our problems.”
Yeah... we’d have another Empire State incident on our hands and no one wants that. Big Ben’s probably going to fall into the Thames one day as it already is, we don’t need the ‘grand’ Crystal Spire joining it.
“Please, please, save my building!”
Idiot.
“I think you mean save those people!”
I like her already. She can stay.
Tumblr media
Cue acting faces;
Put on your best shocked and worried expressions!
I think this lot nailed it.
Tumblr media
Bravely going where no firefighters have gone before! Putting out fires to save lives, and accidentally getting trapped beneath about eight tonnes of rubble. Not so hooray..
I wonder if Conrad’s brother is one of these firefighters? That would have been a nice touch. Slough isn’t London, but isn’t too far away. It’s not outside the realms of possibility.
“We can’t do this alone. International Rescue, come in. It’s McCready. That offer still good?”
“Absolutely Chief. We’re on our way.”
Tumblr media
Oh the annoying title cards are back interrupting the flow. Someone obviously ‘forgot’ to do an extra bit of animating... again.
Nice little throwback to ‘Move and You’re Dead’ here. Not that Alan’s won anything at this point.
“Make me look cool.”
“We haven’t got all day.”
“Oh, and really heroic.”
“Yeah, sure.”
“And make sure you show how totally good looking I am.”
I feel like this is what Virgil does when he starts painting - he just half listen and answers quickly and shortly.
Tumblr media
Alan is such a poser. Has he ever played Musical Statues do you think? The point is staying still. So I think not. In fairness though, he probably never had a normal styled birthday party.
Tumblr media
“Erherm... International Rescue, we have a situation. Virgil, Alan, we need you both in Thunderbird Two.”
“Alan, you can move now!”
John honestly looks very confused and amused.
Tumblr media
Cue everyone gasping over the arrival of Thunderbird Two. It is a pretty cool sigyht.
“That is one tall tower.”
“Crystal Spire. One thousand, one hundred and twenty five metres, ground to tip. It’s supposed to be some sort of architectural masterpiece.”
“It probably looks a lot better when it’s not on fire. Chief McCready, this International Rescue.”
“Meet me up on the 47th floor and be prepare for some heavy lifting.”
“I was made for heavy lifting.”
Boasting. He does kind of have rights though. He was made for heavy lifting.
Tumblr media
“No way in. But as dad always said. If you can’t find a door...”
“...Make one!”
Tumblr media
Cue badass leap to the other side.
Tumblr media
Cue near dangerous, deadly fall to the possible other side.
Tumblr media
This episode has it all and we’re halfway there!
“How’s it looking?”
“Remember that time you supercharged the barbecue?”
“Yeessh..”
“Bad?”
“My eyebrows have only just grown back.”
I should have guessed Virgil would have music on board, but really that sounded like something Gordon and Alan would listen to and it definitely made me life.
“Ooops, sorry, wrong playlist!”
Tumblr media
Cue secondary fire exploding through the building.
“Thunderbird Two, you okay up there?”
“Yeah. (Nothing a respray won’t fix).”
Goodness Alan, you are never going to be allowed to pilot Two again.
Speaking of pilots, are you okay there, Virgil, you know, just holding that lift above your head to stop it crushing you?
Tumblr media
“I’m sure Brains won’t mind too much.”
I think that means Brains is going to go crazy. Wait until he sees Thunderbird Two. Actually correction, wait until Virgil sees Thunderbird Two!
And here we have another of the best ever entrances to a rescue;
“We’re here to rescue you!”
“Uh, that’s usually my line.”
“Sorry.”
Still doesn’t top Scott and Ned though - in my opinion.
“What’s the evacuation plan?”
“Good question. Thunderbird Two, what’s the evacuation plan?”
“Well Thunderbird Two can’t get close enough. And we can’t really risk breaking the glass with so many people inside. Suppose a really big trampoline’s out the question?”
Yes, Alan, it is! Seriously, have you seen how much the prices have risen since Lockdown? I’m not forking out for one. I mean, I don’t really need or want one, I was just saying.
Tumblr media
Look at that face. This episode was literally just like Expressions of Virgil central.
“Everyone’s looking at me, Alan.”
“I don’t know, we could always... take off the top?”
“Take off the top of the building?!”
“Brilliant idea! Let’s do it.”
“Ok Alan, we’ll give it a try.”
Tumblr media
“Ditch the fire fighting module and come back for us.”
And show the camera how badly you’ve scratched up Virgil’s Thunderbird. Yeah, he’s gonna’ go bonkers.
Tumblr media
“How’s the view?”
“Breathtaking.”
Quite literally if you aren’t careful, Virgil.
We know logically they’ll catch each other, but these shots still get me. They’re pretty cool.
“Thanks Tracy.”
“Don’t mention it. We’re a team remember?”
Tumblr media
Now Virgil’s doing a Gordon, and doing a George of the Jungle impression!
“Ah! What did you do? What did you do to my Crystal Spire!”
Don’t you mean ‘what did you do?’ After all, it was Mr Yost who moved it, and lit it up, and set it on fire...
“Second tallest..?”
That man is obsessed. Let’s move on. He annoys me (although not as much as Fischler, it must be said).
“If you ever feel like a break from flying, there’s always a spot for you on my team.”
“Well, I do have some vacation time coming- Alan! What did you do to my ship?”
“Uh, it’s not as bad as it looks! All it needs is a spot of paint.”
Tumblr media
”Paint: that reminds me... Come on, Alan, we’ve gotta get back and finish your portrait.”
“Just promise you won’t make me look too short! Or hairy! Or give me goofy teeth!”
You’re giving him ideas, Alan.
“Virgil? Virge? Oh man!”
Yeah, already said way too much, and Virgil ignoring you is probably not boding well.
And there’s just about time for the finished painting (as the Grand MAX left it) to end this Review.
Tumblr media
P.S. Virgil definitely has more artistic talent than MAX, sorry MAX! Although in fairness to him, I’m not quite sure that’s the result he was aiming for.

"Itinerary"
For FabFiveFeb - Scott @gumnut-logic
My story changed themes. First it was about exhausted Scott, then another Virgil reassurance story, until it ended up like this, which is a new one for me. So yeah, this is another unplanned story, or as I call it, an immediate short.
And, another OC. Also, back to first person POV.
Prompts: glow, apple
Rated T for themes and language.
[Alan] | [Gordon] | [Virgil, Part 1] | [Virgil, Part 2]
*****
Scott
June... it's a hell of a busy month.
Same things happen everyday. Not the rescues, but some of my tasks are made at the same hour. Goes like this.
0700 hours or earlier, or later. Depends.
Phone alarm rings. Wake up. Check time. Grandma gave me an apple, and there's a note too. It's from Virgil.
Morning, Scott
Grandma says an apple a day keeps you stronger. It's gonna be a long day, bro.
-Virgil
Yep, Grandma is the best.
0710 hours
Morning routine. Wash face, brush teeth, shower, hairdryer, hair gel, etcetera.
0735 hours
Check if there are any calls for help. If none, time for breakfast. A heavy one. Plus Virgil's trusted brand of coffee. It's gonna be a long day. If there are calls for help, perhaps a bagel will do. Have a bite on that apple too.
0810 hours
Reports, reports, reports. My brothers would pass their contributions while I compile them. Even if I'm not involved with the rescue. More analysis.
0900 hours
Almost all of our rescues happen at this hour. If I'm not involved, I'll monitor. Sometimes Brains would show his new inventions to me.
1030 hours
Colonel Casey calls for a meeting with the GDF. Happens almost every Tuesday and Friday. If I'm called to present my reports, well, wish me luck.
If no meeting scheduled, rescues. If none, systems check, or analysis... again.
1230 hours
I've been called again for a rescue, a longer one. Happens almost everyday at this hour. Lunchtime? Perhaps a good sandwich.
1400 hours
Back on Tracy Island. Monitor several rescues. Most of my brothers are at work. Virgil and Gordon are always out at this hour. Thirty minutes later, it's all up to John. Sometimes I would head to the hall and see Kayo at the gym. If she sees me, she would ask me to join in her training. She would teach me a few moves...there goes another punch on my arm.
1520 hours
Thunderbird 1 is go... again! John sends me the coordinates. Looks like this is gonna need some more help, not only Thunderbird 1. Virgil's needed again.
1630 hours
Another long rescue. Or maybe two rescues, or three (it happens rarely!)
1830 hours
Kayo and my brothers will talk about their rescues and note it down. Business conversations are mostly at this hour.
1900 hours
My colleague and one of the agents of International Rescue, Bethany Lloyd, would call. She sends our meeting place. Then I'll get my files, freshen up, and wear a suit. Yes, it's like a date. If it's a club, perhaps a dark casual outfit will do. Dinner with my family, tell them I have to meet one of our agents (tell Gordon it's not Lady Penelope), and Thunderbird 1 is go.
If Beth doesn't need me for the night, it's back to reports again, or systems check. Sometimes another rescue. Then dinner. In the next hours, reports, business and personal conversations, then off to bed.
Let's talk about my missions with Beth as we continue. This happens twice a week.
2000 hours
Beth sends me the place where I could land Thunderbird 1. Meet her at the hangar, head to her car, then she'll take me to one private place where we would have our rendezvous.
2020 hours
The date. Small reports, casual talks, and slight drinking.
2040 hours
Sometimes, someone interrupts our date. Beth needs to solve a case, and I would join her. Tell John about it briefly.
2150 hours
Beth takes me to her apartment in New York. Help her write her report, decode messages if there's a need to do it. Sometimes her cases can be solved in a day or two.
After, we would share a bottle of vodka. I'd go for only two shots, of course.
2240 hours
Reporting and decoding all done.
She gives me a kiss. Sometimes that single kiss turns into a makeout session, if I'm up for it. Back in college we've been teased that we're a perfect match, but we wanted to keep it secret. We've done these sessions before. Yes, she's my girlfriend. I don't usually bring it up when it comes to business, of course. All of my brothers know about this one.
Damn, I'm so weak. I hope I don't drift off.
0030 hours
Oh god, I did.
She had all of my clothes off. Shit, I should be home by now. Tell her I should get going, even though it's already past midnight. We put our clothes back on, get my files, head to her car, and she'll take me back to Thunderbird 1.
0045 hours
John calls again. I have to head home now.
And then he's off to his room in Thunderbird 5.
0055 hours
Shit.
"You said you're going to meet one of our agents," Virgil folds his arms. "What's taking you so long?"
"We solved a case, wrote reports, that's it."
"That's it?" he repeats.
I sigh. "It was Bethany Lloyd."
"I know. John told me. So, was there a makeout session?"
"Virgil..."
"Gordon's going to ask you that question. Grandma's worried about you, Scott."
"I know. Sorry, Virgil."
"You better head back to bed, big brother. Another long day tomorrow."
"You too."
Did Grandma remember I was with my girlfriend?
Small conversations with Virgil, and then he's off to bed.
0100 hours
Head to my room. Finish the last bit of my report about the last rescue before the rendezvous with Bethany Lloyd.
Oh, and I just added glow in the dark night sky stickers on my wall. Alan gave me a set. Beautiful, isn't it? Appreciating his art project.
0120 hours
Energy runs out just in time. Drift off for real.
0700 hours or earlier, or later. Depends.
Phone alarm rings. Wake up. Check time. Apple on my nightstand. Virgil's note. Get going. Cycle might repeat.
June... it's a hell of a busy month.
*****
Wow, I can't believe I wrote this faster than my take on Alan. That's a new record.

Whumptober- Day 21
Day 21: Laced Drink
Fandom: Thunderbirds Are Go!
Characters: Virgil Tracy, Gordon Tracy, Scott Tracy, John Tracy
Disclaimer: I do not own Thunderbirds or any of the characters form the show (or from TAG). I just want to make cool stories :)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scott flung open the door to lead outside of the fifth bar they had searched, the back alley dark and eerie. It was silent out here, which was such a contrast to the lights and sound and sheer chaos that was inside every single one of the bars and nightclubs they had waded through, looking for their wayward brother.
Gordon moved forward, phone in hand and flashlight activated. For all their rescue technology, they had been delegated to using phone flashlights and yelling helplessly for their brother.
He had disappeared after the third bar of their crawl, having been whisked away by a handsome man to dance with. Gordon and Scott hadn’t given a shit;they were happy that Virgil was finally having a good time, was able to relax for the first time in ages.
It had been a stressful time for International Rescue lately, and now that Gordon was fully healed after months of recovery and physio, they had decided to celebrate, the three of them, by going to the mainland of New Zealand and doing a bar crawl/clubbing night in Auckland. The city was alive on the Friday night, with the Viaduct lit up with the lights of many clubs and the sound of many songs.
Even the yachts in the area were flashing with some sort of LED.
They had gotten to their third bar of the night, and Virgil had ordered some sort of fruity drink. Gordon had ordered something similar, and Scott was easy with his whiskey or scotch.
Then Virgil started to chat to some guy, with Gordon and Scott watching from the other end of the bar, giving the guy scores out of ten for different features.
The guy ended up pulling Virgil onto the dance floor, and that was when Scott and Gordon lost track of him.
So here they were now, searching every back alley and dark corner they could to find their raven haired brother. Gordon ran his flashlight over behind the dumpster and let out a gasp. “Scott! Come here, I found him!”
Scott ran over to see how Gordon had found their brother. Virgil was passed out, face scraped up and clothes rumpled, his eyes rapidly moving under his eyelids. “Let’s get him out of here,” Scott said, locking eyes with Gordon before nodding and stepping forward. They shoved the dumpster forward, and Virgil rolled more to land sideways in a puddle.
The shock of the water woke him up and he flung himself up, arms wheeling as he tried to gather where he was. Once his eyes landed on Gordon, he relaxed and almost flopped back into the puddle, but luckily Scott caught him before he did. “Hey, Virge. How you feeling?” Gordon asked, looking down into his big brother’s glazed eyes. They flitted around, trying to take in his surroundings, but unable to settle.
“Scotty, Gords…” he trailed off, eyes locking onto Scott’s cerulean blue.
“Virgil? What happened?” Scott tried, tone firm.
Virgil immediately curled away.
“‘M sorry,” he muttered, eyes flicking down and body moving away from Scott, his once loose muscles forming a tight ball of tension in Gordon’s lap. “‘M sorry, Scotty, ‘m so-sorry.”
Alarmed, Scott looked up at Gordon, and saw mirrored confusion. He glanced back down at Virgil, but Gordon spoke first, and softly. “What are you sorry about, Virgil?”
“Th-that m-m-man. He-he wasn’t n-nice. And he-he made me-me le-leave you g-g-guys, and I th-thought Sc-Sc-Sc-ott-t would be angry, be-because the m-man s-said h-h-he would-d. He-he said th-that-t Scott-t would b-be disap-pointed in m-m-me because I was b-b-being bad.” Virgil was sobbing by the end of it, his tears soaking in to Gordon jeans. Scott was looking down at Virgil with a horrified expression painted on his face. What had that guy done?
“Virgil, I promise you, I’m not disappointed, or angry, or whatever he told you I would be. I am happy we found you and that you’re now safe,” he responded after a few minutes of letting what Virgil said sink in.
Virgil rolled back over to face Scott, his eyes red and cheeks blotchy and tear-stained. “R-really?”
“Really.”
“But V, you need to tell us what happened. What did that guy do to you?” Gordon interjected, turning Virgil’s face so that they were facing each other.
“I-I’m sorry,” Virgil responded again, the hysteria seemingly once again taking control of the man. The sobbing started up again and son he was shaking in Gordon’s lap, viciously shaking his head. “I’m sorry I’m sorry I’msorryI’msorryI’msorry.”
“Hey, Virgil, hey, it’s okay, you have nothing to be sorry for, remember?” Scott reminded him, gently stroking Virgil’s sweaty hair away from his face. Those drugged eyes connected with Scott’s once again and Virgil let out a little whimper.
“He-he pushed me, u-u-up against th-the wa-all. And he-he whisp-p-pered something i-i-in my ea-ar. And then h-he p-pulled m-m-my p-p-p-p”
He can’t go on from there, the sobbing overtaking his words.
But both Scott and Gordon get an idea of what happened.
And there would be hell to pay when they found the man.
Gordon pulled Virgil up so that he was clutching at Gordon’s chest, his legs lying limp behind him. Scott rapped his collar in the sequence needed to activate his comms. “John, I need you to find the guy that gave Virgil his last drink. Maybe an hour ago? Hour and a half? You need to find him.”
“Scott? What’s going on?”
“Please, just find him. He’s… he’s hurt Virge.”

Day 8 - Encounter
After the third day of the Tracy Industries annual general meeting, Scott just wanted to throw in the towel. Sometimes it was too much for him to handle, and the annual meeting was the worst part of being CEO. Three weeks of day long meetings, having to chat with people who only wanted to promote their own self-interest and having to go to more corporate events because he was ‘in town’, all while International Rescue had to struggle on without him.
Scott walked into the bar of the private club; thankful he’s been able to slip out before anyone could corner him. He fell into one of the chairs in a more secluded corner and let his head fall back, gaze fixating on the intricate design on the ceiling. After passing his membership card to the server who approached him, he ordered the most expensive scotch the establishment had. While still staring at the ceiling, Scott removed his tie, slipping it into his suit pocket and undid the top button of his shirt. He unbuttoned the suit jacket and rolled his shoulders back and pulling his arms free, before throwing the jacket over the back of the chair as the waiter came carrying his drink. Taking it with a smile, he took as sip, letting the liquid roll over his tongue before he let it burn its way down his throat. A sigh escaped his lips; this was the only to survive this torture.
Allowing himself the luxury of slouching he closed his eyes and tried to relax. Scott planned to sit like that for a while, taking the occasional sip until all his drink was gone and it was time to order food, as was his usual AGM ritual. He paid good money for the privacy this club gave him; he damn well was going to enjoy it.
“Scott Tracy!? Is that really you?”
Scott groaned inwardly, reluctantly opening his eyes to the intruder. Standing in front of him was an older version of his old school friend Kenneth Robertson, who he had lost touch with when he had joined the Air Force. The man before him was dressed in a good suit but still looked out of place in this high-end establishment, so Scott knew he wasn’t a regular here. He couldn’t help but smile at the memory that popped into his head.
“Yes, it’s me. You’re looking great, Kenneth.” Scott stood up and shook the man’s hand, the shake firm, though Kenneth went a step further and pulled Scott in for a back slap. A little surprised at the contact, Scott sat back down, trying to compose himself, while Kenneth settled into the seat beside him.
“So, what have you been up to since you left school? You went to Yale to major in accountancy, right?”
Kenneth smiled at him, “so you do remember us then! We all thought you’d gone and forgotten us when you joined the force! Yeah, I went to Yale though majored in business management in the end with a minor in accountancy. Remember, Bertie? He went to Yale too, though he majored in mathematics, with a minor in chemistry. He’s currently leading a research group for some big pharmacological company; I can never remember which one. As for me, I’m director of accountancy in my father’s firm, big surprise there. Never expected you to go the same way though.”
Scott gave his friend a small smile. It was true that Kenneth had always been expected to work for his father. The two of them had spoken in depth about it as teenagers, Scott trying to convince Kenneth he didn’t have to follow in his father’s life plan for him. Everyone knew that Scott loved flying and wanted to be a pilot for his own reasons, not just because his father was, and he certainly wanted nothing to do with his father’s business. His father had never expected Scott to take on the business, yet after his father’s accident Scott had felt like he had to become the CEO. He’d already left the Air Force by this point to fly Thunderbird 1 for International Rescue, but his friends didn’t know that. To them he’d left the force to become a businessman.
“Plans changed. I had no choice after the accident.”
“You could have let someone else take the role. There are so many other people who could have done it Scott. You didn’t have to give up what you love, just because felt like you had to take your father’s place.”
Kenneth always had a way of getting to the route of the problem, never beating around the bush. Scott had felt like he had to take his father’s place as CEO. The pressure to become head of the family, head of IR and head of TI had been immense. In his grief, he just took on the burden, accepting that it was his role and forcing himself to learn the ropes.
“I would have let someone else be CEO, if that someone else would have stuck to my father’s vision for the company. Every potential candidate had their own agenda and wanted to take TI to places my father hadn’t wanted it to go. The board are constantly trying to take on projects my father would disagree with and stand in the way of the ones he would have wanted. Only I knew what he really wanted the company to stand for, so it’s my job to keep his legacy alive. I never wanted this, but it’s something I have to do.”
“Damn Scott. You are good at getting yourself stuck with things you don’t want to be stuck with, don’t you?”
Kenneth grinned, referring to the time in school when he mentioned how they could go around the local government run schools and do exciting workshops to their top pupils to help encourage them to apply for the scholarship programme. Only for Scott to end up being the person who, with the help of his head of year, had to plan the whole thing. It did mean he got out of some lessons to do said workshops however he then had to catch up in the evening, which was nowhere near as fun. Thankfully it had been his last year so someone else got the joy the next year.
“Says the one who fell asleep during an engineering class and managed to superglue a spanner to side of his face!”
“Not fair, I was only tired because you insisted on me standing watch while you had your wicked way with Jasmine!”
“Firstly, it was Judith, and secondly, I returned the favour when you were seeing Angela. I just had the discipline not to fall asleep during class!”
The two men moved to a table and ordered dinner, continuing to reminisce about their school days. Kenneth caught Scott up on what everyone was now doing or not doing, while Scott shared the odd story from his Air Force days and the mishaps he’d seen at various functions he’d attended over the years. Kenneth happily showed off pictures of his fiancé and extending an invite to the wedding. Scott brushed it off saying he’d have to see what his schedule was like closer to the time but did swap digital business cards with the man and telling him the best way to contact him was through his secretary. After dinner Kenneth excused himself, wanting to get back to his hotel so he can catch up with his fiancé. Scott paid the bill and headed back to the hotel, thankful that he’d had good dinner company for once.
Once in his suite, he changed into his nightwear and decanted himself another whiskey, thinking over the surprise meeting. Kenneth had been there to meet a high-end client who was member and was flying home on the Friday night. Part of Scott wished he could tell Kenneth that he was living his dream, that flying Thunderbird 1 was better than any plane the Air Force or even the GDF could offer him. Looking at the itinerary on his phone, he could see he was required at a function the next night; a black-tie event with lots of businessmen trying to outdo each other with their successes. Sighing, Scott looked at the business card of his old school friend, half-wishing he could spend another night reminiscing on their schooldays. Sending a quick message to his secretary, telling her to pass on any mail from Kenneth straight to him, Scott decided that maybe, just maybe, be would try to make it to the man’s wedding. His family were always pestering him about not taking time for himself, so maybe this would do him some good.

Happy Christmas
Since @tagsecretsanta works so hard to arrange our secret santa exchange, I thought it was time they got something in return.
So, as with the rest of us they gave me three prompts and the one I choose was ‘Scott and Virgil and kids at Christmas’ so here you go - Merry Christmas and thank you @tagsecretsanta
“Would you want one of these, one day?” Virgil asked.
Scott peered at him in the dim light. Though only sitting against the opposite wall, Virgil’s features were difficult to make out. Scott gave a one shouldered shrug in response, being careful not to disturb anyone.
“Weird.” Said Virgil “I always thought you would make a great dad.”
They had been trapped in this room for nearly eight hours now. A combination of high winds and acid rain had meant it wasn’t safe to take off. The flash flood made it impossible to leave the room. Damage to this mining complex’s communications array made Thunderbird Five indecipherable due to static, at least until the storm passed. It had been a crazy day, not the normal Tuesday.
The only place to seek refuge had been this cramped supply closet. Okay it was large as supply closets went, but still far too small for six people, even small people. Far from the best place to spend the night, let alone this particular night.
“I haven’t really thought about it.” lied Scott.
“Sure.” Scoffed Virgil.
It would have been alright if it was just the two of them - well not alright: it was always tough to be on a callout on the important days – but they could manage. It came with the job and no-one took a missed birthday or anniversary personally. It was the kids that Scott felt sorry for.
They had managed to evacuate all of the miners before the storm swept in, but the children had been holed up in their school room across the camp. Scott and Virgil had barely made it to them before the weather got too bad and there was no way to get them out.
To their credit they had been very brave: comforted by the soothing tones of confident adults who never let their own fear show. Virgil and Scott had been hard pressed to distract them though.
Tonight they should have been in the main compound with their families, putting the finishing touches to the Christmas tree. They should have put out stockings and a plate of mince pies for Santa (plus carrots for the reindeer). There should have been hot chocolate while wrapped in blankets and watching The Muppets Christmas Carol.
That was Christmas Eve, not this: stuck in their school store room with two strangers.
When Scott and Virgil realised they were going to be taking up temporary residence they set to wearing out the four energetic ten-year-olds as quickly as possible. They raided the school supplies without compunction and the room was now full of pictures, Christmas lists, paper chains, garlands, paper snowflakes and origami stars. They used every craft and game in their arsenal to fill the time and stop them all dwelling on what a shit Christmas Eve this had turned out to be.
When the wind had picked up further Scot and Virgil had told the children that it would be most fun –meaning safe – to camp in this small room with no windows. Now they were both trapped with one child sleeping on each side using their legs as a pillow, blankets wrapped tight. Scott couldn’t blame them for taking what comfort they could despite the absence of their parents.
“What?”
“You’re Scott Tracy, you plan everything. Of course you’ve at least considered it.” Virgil said.
Scott frowned. “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with being prepared and I seldom hear you complaining when I’ve bought along just he piece of gear we need.”
“Then what do you think?” Virgil nodded at the forms sleeping on them. “Do you want a family of your own?”
“Well, in theory yes, but practically is a whole different ball game.”
“Why?”
“For one thing we are spending Christmas Eve holed up half way around the world from home, and will do to well into Christmas Day. It takes a pretty special person to be prepared to put up with that sort of crap.”
“Special people do exist though.” Virgil countered, ever the optimist.
“Sure, but first I have to find them, and to find them I have to talk to more than just people I happen to be rescuing at that moment.”
“So take a day off. Go to a club – I’d make a great wingman.”
“That’s not really my scene.” Scott scrunched up his face in distaste.
“Stop seeing problems! We’re solutions people.”
Scott gave a deep sigh.
“I don’t think I could do that to someone, do that to those hypothetical kids.”
“Do what?”  Virgil asked.
“Make them sit and wait every time. We get a taste of it sure, but for every mission, every rescue, they would be sitting at home wondering if this was the time that we were too daring. If this time the problem was too big. If this time someone wasn’t coming home.”
Scott had often wondered if they would be in this line of work if Mom were still alive. Would she be sitting at home right now, checking and rechecking the equipment, waiting anxiously for them to get back in touch? Maybe she would be pacing – she was always full of energy so Scott didn’t know if she could sit and wait. Or maybe she was doing something – cleaning, cooking, painting – anything to fill her hands while her thoughts were far away.
“Or they could be sitting there thinking how proud they are.” Virgil was saying. “I’m not going to say I’m not worried when one of you guys is out there without me, it makes me feel sick I’m so scared for you. But that’s nothing compared to the look on people’s faces when we get them out of trouble. Think of what these guys parents are going to look like when we get out of here.”
“Yeah, that’s the reason I do it, but that’s not good enough to put someone else through it.” Scott told him.
“Thing is Scott, you don’t necessarily get to make that choice for someone. If I manage to get you off the island long enough to run into this special person you don’t get to decide how much they can cope with.”
Scott thought about that, really thought about what it would be like to raise children on the island.  They’d learn to walk along the beaches. He would need to put in guard rails around the pool until Gordon taught them to swim. Maybe John could home school them for a bit  - because he was by far the best teacher – just until they were old enough to spend some time away. Not that he would want them to go to boarding school as such but they didn’t exactly live in any school’s catchment area and he would want them to have meet other kids.  He would teach them to fly, of course, in one of the light aircraft they kept for when a Thunderbird would be overkill. They’d spend time baking with Grandma and drawing pictures of the rain forest. Kayo would tell them stories about hero’s and villains, Virgil teach them the piano, Alan would game with them and Brains would probably make a robotic pet.
In all his musing – now or before – it never occurred to Scott that neither he nor his family would be living anywhere but the island.
“I’ll tell you one thing, no child of mine will be joining International Rescue.” Scott said gruffly.
Virgil laughed, being sure to keep it low and quiet. “That will be another thing that you don’t get to decide. But I’m glad we’ve moved on from ‘it’ll never happen’ though.”
Maybe Mom wouldn’t have been waiting at home. Maybe she would have been out with them. She never once asked someone else for a favour she wasn’t prepared to do in return: maybe this would have been no different. Part of Scott knew that his memories were coloured through the lenses of childhood, time and the firm belief that he had the best Mom ever. But the other part believed that his Mom would be as fearless in the face of natural disasters as she was fighting for the last of that year’s must-have toy.
Yeah, his Mom would have made a great Thunderbird pilot. Scott felt a smile spread across his face at the thought. Virgil looked puzzled, not knowing where Scott’s musings had taken him.
“What about you? See a family in your future?” Scott asked his little brother.
“Yep.” Virgil grinned. “A whole football team’s worth.”
“And maybe that’s something you don’t get to decide” Scott chuckled.
“Probably.” Virgil agreed without any less humour.
“Then maybe we should go out together at some point – meet some people who aren’t scared to death for a change.”
Before Virgil could answer a high pitched beep started to emanate from Scott’s wrist. He moved to silence it as quickly as he could, but one of the children still woke slightly, muttered, and then snuggled in closer.
It was always a challenge to keep up with who was in which time zone. John could tell you who had recently eaten, who had slept or who was three days younger than they should be because they’d crossed the International Date Line too often without even looking up from his coffee. Scott couldn’t do any of those things and had a hard time keeping straight where was day and where was night, so he kept his watch set to island time – a small anchor to home.
The beep could only mean one thing – back on a small friendly island in the middle of a large uncaring ocean it was midnight. It was Christmas day.
Everyone might be fast asleep right now, the turning of the day going unnoticed. As Thunderbird Two was still mid-mission they were probably still awake and exchanging the first greeting and hugs of the day, John giving his virtually for now. Scott wasn’t about to let thousands of miles get in the way of joining in.
“Happy Christmas Virgil. Not how I wanted to start the day.”
“Happy Christmas Scott. Be neither, but ” Virgil looked down fondly at the sleeping forms that were pinning him down. “It could be worse.”

» No Bicycles for Children Under Age 12 on Public Streets - Shanghai International Schools Association (SISA)
The following information regarding bicycle riding in Shanghai is shared in an attempt to be helpful to all its member schools. For safety purposes, the regulations in Shanghai allow for bicycles to be ridden on public streets only by children age 12 and above. This regulation is strictly enforced in Puxi, but is unevenly applied in Pudong. The immediate danger is that families may assume that local protections for bicycle riders may be the same as in their own country, but they are not. It is important to be aware that if a child under 12 is involved in any kind of accident on a public street or crossing, the parent may be held responsible. Sidewalks and bicycle paths along public roads are considered part of the public roads. In addition, as accident insurance is relatively new to China and there are not many precedents with these situations, your own accident or medical insurance company has the right to refuse cover in the event of violation of the local law. We hope that better understanding will result in better safety for younger children.
» Community Bulletin Objectives
The Community Bulletin conveys school and student-related information and supports community, volunteer and charitable organizations. The classified section and driver/ayi notices, are meant as a service to parents. With the exception of sharing information and offers from Concordia's official corporate partners, we do not support commercial ventures or for-profit organizations. The Community Bulletin editors reserve the right to omit submitted content deemed to fall outside the scope of the Community Bulletin.
» Parent Directory Privacy Policy
At Concordia, we are very protective of family information and data. The school emails only information that is important and directly related to the school and student issues. Internally, we carefully monitor what is emailed to parents and ensure it is appropriate. The use of email addresses from the parent directory for non-school related or commercial reasons is a severe misuse of the directory.
» Submitting Community Bulletin Items
The Community Bulletin is a bi-weekly newsletter. Please submit text in final format by Wednesday at noon in Arial font (maximum 100 words or 5 sentences in paragraph form with a headline) to [email protected]. Based on the schedule of the next bulletin, submissions may be included the week they are received or the following week. Any submission received after this time on the week scheduled for publication will be included in the next bulletin in two weeks. Submitted items may run for a maximum of two consecutive publications.

Making the Scene: Traditional Hot Rods & Customs Steal the Show at the 2017 Detroit Autorama
Forgetting for the moment that Motown reached a record high of 70 degrees F on the opening day this year, the Detroit Autorama has been the hot rodder’s oasis amid the snow and usually bitter cold of Motown’s notorious winters for 65 years.
The Michigan Hot Rod Association (MHRA) hosted the very successful inaugural event in 1953 and quickly handed the show’s reigns to Don Ridler, a local promoter. The Autorama mushroomed over the next few years, and ticket sales supported MHRA’s quest to build Michigan’s first official, sanctioned dragstrip.
After Don Ridler’s death, a memorial award was created in his honor, and the first one was bestowed in 1964 to Al Bergler’s AA/C race car, dubbed More Aggravation. In the ensuing years, the Ridler award grew into one of the hot rodding world’s most prestigious trophies, ranking with the Grand National Roadster Show’s America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award. It is awarded only to vehicles that debut at the Detroit Autorama, which guarantees a fresh show every year, with the latest creations from industry legends and up-and-comers alike.
Anyone who’s tracked the Ridler award and the batch of finalists known as the Great 8 over the past few years knows that today’s contenders are cost-be-damned rolling sculptures. They’re gorgeous, inspiring, and flawless. They just don’t have much in common with traditional hot rods. Well, mostly.
There were a couple of surprisingly traditional entries under the bright lights this year, including Great 8 finalists Ted and Colleen Hubbard’s ’30 Ford and—not surprisingly—a Deuce Tudor from George Poteet. The Ridler award was bestowed on a ’33 Ford-based custom rod built by Steve’s Auto Restoration for Marcy and Buddy Jordan.
While the Ridler contenders represent the upper echelon of project car spending, the rest of the vehicles on display convey decidedly more down-to-earth approaches to personalization and performance. It is the quintessential blue-collar city, after all, and that’s reflected in most of the hot rods under the lights.
The Detroit Autorama is definitely a bucket list event. And for those who slog through dark, cold, and slushy winters, it’s a warm respite providing a glimpse of the warm-weather car season that’s not too far away.
By the way, MHRA got their track. The pavement was laid, the timing tower erected, and the venue, which would be called Motor City Dragway, finally opened for time trials in 1957. MHRA board member Bob Larivee was tasked with managing the strip, which was located in rural New Baltimore, northeast of Detroit. In 1959, he founded Promotions, Inc. to promote car shows, which lead to the formation of the International Show Car Association (ISCA) by 1963.
The Motor City Dragway track succumbed to suburban sprawl in 1978, but its roots were in the Autorama that continues to thrive.
Former Ridler winners Ted and Colleen Hubbard were contending again in 2017 with their neo-traditional ’30 Ford five-window dubbed Afterthought. It is a stunner, built on aftermarket, modified ’32-style framerails featuring handmade cross members and custom, scratch-machined wishbones. The blown, Ardun hemi-headed flathead adds to the car’s carefully crafted “as cast” color/appearance theme.
The A-bone artisans at West Virginia’s Hilton Hot Rods gave Ralph and Linda Miller’s ’30 Tudor their characteristically spot-on stance. The chopped body (with a ’32 firewall) rests on a ’32 Ford frame that also houses a Ross Racing Engines–built early Hemi, trimmed with a 4-71 huffer, a quartet of Ford 94-series carbs, and a Vertex mag. Sixteen-inch chromed steelies complete the period-perfect look.
Jeff Knudsen’s true barn-find ’36 Ford Club Cabriolet was found in western Michigan, and the only thing he’s done to it is lower it and add rear fender skirts. It was last repainted probably sometime in the early 1960s, and its original engine was changed to a later flathead, too. “No more changes or updates,” Knudsen told us. “It’s done.”
John Cassiol painstakingly restored and maintains Jim Oddy’s ’48 Austin-based AA Gasser, from locating the same type of Fiat seats used originally to replicating the old Sapphire Mist paint. Power comes from a blown, gas-sipping 392 Hemi. Buffalo-based Oddy found the car on Grand Island, New York, south of Niagara Falls, quickly built a race car out of it, and became one of the East Coast’s fiercest competitors. The car makes appearances regularly at nostalgia drag events.
Don “The Egyptian” Boeke’s ’55 Lincoln Nadine is chopped, shaved, frenched … you name it. It also remains Lincoln-powered. The pearl-yellow paint job features darker fogged highlights around the edges and is complemented by yellow-and-white upholstery. The roof is a very pale yellow with intricate cobwebbing that must have taken ages and a bottomless reserve of patience to complete.
The nose-up attitude of Kevin Doolittle’s straight-axle ’29 Ford pickup D/Gas tribute is remarkable for its attention to detail and the fact that it’s Ford powered. A balanced, blueprinted, and tunnel-rammed 289 helps light off the pie-crust cheater slicks via a 3.90-geared 9-inch axle. The authentic 23-karat gold-leaf graphics were handled by Dick Briggs, while Hillside Hot Rods did the truck’s body and chassis fabrication.
Chris and Donna Schlaff’s Brookville-bodied Deuce highboy makes a big statement with understated and timeless style. The luscious black roadster complemented with red guts sports a BopTop removable convertible top that stows in the trunk. It also runs a Chevy 348 and rolls on polished, 15-inch Real Rodders “small kidney beans” wheels.
Ed Roth would be proud of how Frtiz Schenck’s Baja Bandeeto channels the whimsy of his imagination. Illustrator Jimmy Smith penned the design, and Schenck took it from there. He made and painted the one-off, hand-formed fiberglass body, with a Plexiglas canopy, which rests on a scratch-built chassis that’s home to a VW 1600 engine. The bubble-topped interior is trimmed in white “Big Foot fur,” natch.
Mark “Topes” Thompson hawks his hot rod art out of an old, home-built ’55 Pontiac Starchief-based camper. Its crap-tastic execution belies a surprisingly warm and period-appointed cabin. Check out the artist’s work by searching Topes Art on Facebook.
Designer Brook Stevens, who designed the original Oscar Mayer Weinermobile, also conceived this radically altered ’41 Chevy coupe, which was originally commissioned by an Oscar Mayer exec in 1959. Dan, Don, and Janet Tonielli are the current caretakers, after rescuing it from a barn. Look closely and you’ll the see its long nose, low-slung proportional influence in one of Stevens’ later design projects, the ’62 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk.
The ElDorodder ’32 Ford Tudor was a show car built in the 1950s by Bill White, who was the president of the ElDorodders car club. It wasn’t quite finished when it was shown in 1959 at Darryl Starbird’s show in Wichita, Kansas. White died later that year, and the car went into storage. Vern Gray purchased the still-unfinished hot rod in 2015 and saw it through to its natural, period conclusion. That’s a 390 Cadillac mill between the fenders.
The story on Tommy Wahl’s barn-find T-bucket is that the owner/builder passed on a long, long time ago, and the car simply sat. His widow finally decided to sell it, and Wahl caught wind of it via a Craigslist ad. It is reportedly as-built from the late 1950s, including the ’57-vintage 283 small-block.
The legendary, 89-years-young Gene Winfield held class in Detroit, demonstrating top-chopping on a ’50 Ford.
Silver Cloud was another time-worn show car at the Autorama. Originally built by Doug Mattox in Texas, the ’60 Edsel Ranger was fitted with ’64 Chrysler headlamps, layer upon layer of silver metalflake lacquer, a 331 Hemi, chromed chassis components, and a thoroughly customized, Thunderbird-based interior. The car was even featured in a 1966 edition of 1001 Custom Car Ideas.
In 1953, Chevrolet built the Corvette in Flint, Michigan, and that’s also where the Tini Home camper was built. Weighing only 1,400 pounds and stretching a mere 14.6 feet in length, it’s indeed a diminutive domicile on wheels. And forget about the original engine and trans. This thing is packing its original stove, furnace, and icebox.
With all the black and suede hot rods out there, Rudy Duperron’s ’34 Ford three-window is refreshing for its classic, flame-licked red exterior. It’s a simple yet effective presentation powered by a simple yet effective small-block Chevy.
We didn’t get too much data on Nathan Stewart’s Y-block-powered ’31 Ford coupe but liked what we saw, from the channeled body and Deuce grille to the pinstriped steelies. The louvered visor was matched with a louvered deck lid, too.
There’s a school of thought that a 6-71 blower on a flathead is aesthetically unpleasing and overkill for performance, but it’s hard to argue with the effect of this one on a prepped 8BA. It helps that the huffed flattie is nestled in a vintage ’59 Chassis Research K88 dragster.
Bill Kellogg’s ’glass-bodied Willys was built to suggest a barn-find Gasser, including coating the exterior with 3M spray tack and blowing dust onto it for a permanent patina. The engine is a blown, Isky-cammed 392 Hemi backed by a Turbo 400 that sends torque to a 4.56-geared, spool-equipped 9-inch axle.
Metal-shaping supplier Fournier Enterprises, which also hosts metalworking classes, was on hand demonstrating its products. We happened by when one of its experts took time for more personal instruction for a couple of next-generation enthusiasts. We’ll be looking for their builds in about 20 years.
Chris Evans’ sharp Blue Bayou roadster (BLUBYU reads the license plate) was an AMBR contender at the Grand National Roadster Show last year. It’s an all-steel car powered by a ’54 331 Hemi built with a mix of traditional and contemporary speed parts, like the “Strombergs” on the engine that are actually EFI throttle bodies.
The ’59 Ranchero’s long, low lines make a surprisingly strong foundation for a mild custom, especially when it’s hugging the concrete like Kyle Raetz’s. The 3-inch lowering is complemented by the contrasting color scheme that visually lengthens the Rancho. Note the ’59 Cadillac taillights, too. Under the hood is the original 292 Y-Block.
An Edelbrock aluminum intake draws fuel and air through a sextet of Holley/Ford 94-series carbs to feed the small-block Chevy powering Patrick Hampton’s ’30 Model A.

Career Day (Bit 8)
Bit 1 | Bit 2 | Bit 3 | Bit 4 | Bit 5 | Bit 6 | Bit 7 | Bit 8
Writing at 3am...
Many thanks to @hedwigstalons for the point in the right direction :D ::hugs you::
-o-o-o-
Beyond Io, Scott Tracy took a step forward. “I’m sorry, Ms Kent, International Rescue specifics are not available for general discussion. Alan knows this. Apologies for the interruption.”
There was disgruntled muttering from Alan’s direction.
Neither Tracy seemed to be aware that the entire room was staring at them.
John cleared his throat and eyes turned back to him. “It was cool.” The smile curving his lips was directed solely at Alan.
Anna found herself smiling as the youngest Tracy looked up at his brother and brightened.
This was an interesting family in interesting circumstances, but she could see that the brothers had their own dynamic.
But anyway, they were running late and lunch was fast approaching. Spectacular live feeds or not, Mr Tracy did not want to face a room full of hungry tweens. “Mr Tracy, how did you become an astronaut?”
She found herself again targeted by a questioning eyebrow before he turned back to the class. “I studied hard. If you want to become an astronaut, you need to push your limits. Don’t settle for average, because in space, it won’t be enough. Your life is in your hands and the hands of the people you work with.”
“Who do you work with?” Gemma was waving her hand around above her head but obviously was far too impatient to wait to be asked.
“International Rescue is unique. We are an independent organisation and operate and staff our own equipment. I work with my elder brothers Scott and Virgil. They are both space rated.”
Gemma’s eyes widened as she turned to look at the two men at the back of the room. “They’re astronauts, too?”
John smiled almost fondly. “It is not their preferred environment, but yes, they are both capable space pilots.”
“Do you live in space?” Alma’s eyes were wide.
“Sometimes. Thunderbird Five is an amazing place.”
“What does it look like?”
A brief glance towards the back of the room and John picked up the tablet he had put down to direct the holographic interface. A swipe of his hand and Jupiter disappeared to be replaced by a satellite. A ring spun slowly around a central core, solar panels fanned out like tail feathers and a bright number five graced one end. The word ‘Thunderbird’ was emblazoned down its length.
“This is Thunderbird Five. From here I can respond to any emergency planet wide and beyond.”
Anna frowned at the hologram. It was no where near as clear as the previous display. Perhaps it was being delivered a different way? But then she realised certain parts of the Thunderbird were blurred.
Oh.
“Why is it blurry?” Gemma was sharp and less inhibited by social custom.
“International Rescue demands a certain level of privacy for our safety and the safety of others.” The statement did not invite further questions.
Perhaps it was time for her to wrap this up. “Mr Tracy, thank you so much for coming in today. Does anyone have any further questions?”
Gemma’s hand shot up immediately. “How do you get to work with International Rescue? Would I be able to fly a Thunderbird one day?”
All eyes focussed on John.
The astronaut frowned a little. “International Rescue is currently a private organisation and we are not accepting applications at this time.” John glanced at his brother at the back of the room and Anna watched something pass between them.
“So I won’t be able to fly Thunderbird Three? Even if I work really hard?” Gemma sounded so disappointed.
John’s shoulders dropped just a fraction. “Not currently, but the future is unknown. And besides there are plenty of excellent other craft in service to aim for.”
“What about Alan? What if he wants to become an astronaut? Will he get to fly Thunderbird Three?”
John eyed his little brother, a small smile on his face. “If Alan wants to and works hard enough, yes, one day he might do exactly that.”
A snort from Rory. “A Tracy only club.”
But Anna was distracted by Alan slowly rising from his seat, shock on his face. “I could fly Thunderbird Three?”

Up From the Depths P.2 - Re-Review #33
Look at that scenery! It gets me every time, I will be honest.
“This is Thunderbird One in immediate pursuit of The Mechanic.”
“I’ve got you Thunderbird One. Thunderbird Five is tracking you at a thousand metres and closing.”
“The TV-21... I haven’t seen it since I was a kid. It’s just as cool as I remember.”
“Please use caution, Scott. The Mechanic must be piloting remotely. That means he’s got nothing to lose.”
“Except Dad’s old plane he’s carrying.”
Tumblr media
“Scott, there’s a safe area up ahead. You could knock out the TV-21 and bring down the plane with zero civilian causalities.”
“No way, Thunderbird Five. That plane belongs to us and I’m going to get i back in one piece.”
And that decision causes a load of problems - but had Scott not made that call, the episode would have been quite a bit shorter, and Scott probably wouldn’t have met Ned - and I wouldn’t have been able to write a fic about called ‘When Scott met Ned’, so I’ll go with it.
“Scott, when I designed the TV-21, you’re Dad wanted all the thrust I could give him. That booster is the most powerful I’ve ever built.”
“More powerful than Thunderbird One?”
“Well... yes.”
“Thunderbird One is going down!”
Grandma being able to give Scott those instructions makes a lot more sense now the whole series has aired. When we first saw this episode, I was a little bit like.. explanation please? (Because based on TOS Grandma; she didn’t seem the type to fly). But, it’s okay, they came through and gave it to us.
Tumblr media
“Don’t worry, I won’t let the TV-21 out of my sight.”
We know you won’t John.
“Thunderbird Shadow moves fast and quiet. He won’t hear me coming.”
And another Kayo ‘I can totally manage a solo mission moment’. Yeah, remember one of the last ones? As in the nearly dying part (’Touch and Go’)? Clearly not. Is it just me, or is that getting a little bit repetitive and annoying now? I really found that Kayo had an attitude in this two-parter.
I for one, am very glad Grandma called in some assistance.
“Hello, Dear? Are you busy?”
“Never too busy for you, Mrs Tracy.”
“How would you like a second chance to get The Mechanic?”
“I’d enjoy it more than Parker likes complaining about the weather. Scotland, Parker.”
“Right haway, M’Lady. hOf hall the places to ‘ide hout ‘e picks the rainy hone.”
Parker, I’d like to claim that such might actually be me, down here n the South West coast. Hello, always rains down here... except it’s actually really nice right now. I claim it’s the lack of pollutants affecting the air quality and atmosphere. But’s that’s just one girl’s theory.
Tumblr media
Look at his face, his poor little face. Thunderbird Four really is in a state though...
“What do you think?”
“I think we have a lot of work to do.”
Tumblr media
Scott looks so sad, sat back at his dad’s desk, bless him. Knowing him he’s probably reliving the fact that he failed to get the TV-21 back. He’s always too hard on himself. Anyone else remember the events of ‘Recharge’? Virgil, come give him another talking to, please.
“I get that everybody loves the TV-21, but it’s just a plane.”
“It’s also a symbol of your Father’s determination. Ever since he was a boy, your Father dreamed he’d be the fastest pilot who ever flew.”
“So he and Brains built the TV-21?”
“It was beautiful! Dream come true!”
“Until The Hood crashed it.”
“But he didn’t crash his dream. Your Dad didn’t care about being fastest anymore. He only cared about being first. First on the scene when people need help. First to act when someone’s in trouble. And instead of one ship to do it all, he built five. The TV-21 was the beginning of International Rescue.”
“We need to get that plane back!”
That’s the spirit, Alan!
I’m loving all these scenes on Tracy Island in this episode just to say. Definitely another reason why it makes it into my favorites. It’s an episode which really succeeds in making the boys both human and heroes and I will endlessly love how well written this family was in this two-parter.
Tumblr media
“What’s the situation, John?”
“The Mechanic’s craft has stopped over the GDF’s high security iridium vault. The GDF are responding now.”
Because we all know how well that will go down...
Tumblr media
“All personnel have been evacuated, Colonel Casey. Except one.”
“Well get him out of there.”
“He said he won’t leave. He’s afraid of losing his job. Oh, and he told to say ‘Gladys won’t go either’.”
“What’s his name?”
I think we already know the answer.
“A crewman. Tedford. Ned Tedford.”
“Oh boy.”
Called it!
Tumblr media
“No one’s stealing the world’ supply of iridium, Gladys. Not on our watch!”
That’s right everyone! It’s our favourite gold member of the Rescue Club! Ned Tedford and Gladys!
“Phew, Gladys. I thought we were in trouble there for a second.”
Yeah, Ned you kinda are... See I told you, never leave the GDF to handle things. I bet Colonel Casey is really regretting allowing Virgil to convince her to give Ned a “nice cozy desk job” with the GDF.
I love how Colonel Casey just says “there’s a worker inside” - she knew it was Ned, she could have told them it was Ned - it’s even more comical that she chooses not to.
“It’s never even been tested!”
“Brains, whatever it is, will it help us stop The Mechanic?”
“Conceivably.”
“Then we’ll take it!”
Good choice.
Tumblr media
Maximum Max is a brilliant new development and one I think Alan really loves - it was like giving the kid more video games to play with. And it gave Scott a chain to go and rescue Ned! Hooray!
“It’s game time!”
Yeah it is! And just look at them go.
Tumblr media
In my opinion, this goes down as Scott’s best ever entrance to a rescue.
“It’s International- Arrgh!”
*Has iridium thrown at him*.
Definitely the best entrance.
“Keep your dirty hands off this iridium!”
“Ned Tedford?”
“Oh, it’s you! Sorry about that!”
I think that was meant to be Scott’s line. And the fact Scott can reognise Ned (when we know Colonel Casey didn’t give a name - well, that we heard), means he must have been told a lot by his brothers. Or, that’s the assumption I’ve always made.
“Why am I not surprised? I need you to climb into the airlock.”
“No way! I was told to watch this iridium. I won’t let it be stolen!”
“Uh... it’s already been stolen, Ned. You do realise you’re in space, right?”
I mean, I would hope the floatiness gave that away...
“Hmm... That does explain the floatiness.”
Or apparently not. I am proven wrong. Again.
“But it does not change anything! I’m not going anywhere without this vault!”
And there is another decision that sets the path of the episode. If they could have just rescued Ned and Gladys... I can’t help wondering if they would have stood a better chance at recovering the TV-21, or if it still wouldn’t have made a big enough difference.
“Alan, we’re gonna’ have to retrieve the iridium as well.”
“Scott, that isn’t the mission!”
“It wasn’t, but it is now.”
Always listen to your field commander, Alan, and today that is Scott, and he’s made the call. Whatever you and I may think of it.
Tumblr media
The International Rescue theme played on bagpipes was absolutely wonderful!
“hIt’s been cloned! That’s hone hof the ‘ood’s hold tricks!”
“Where do you think he got it from?”
That is a new one... Another thing to add to the list of connections between The Mechanic and The Hood, because that implies a more long term connection than we might have first thought.
And all I have to say here, is poor hAlice! May she rest in peace.
Tumblr media
“But it’s Dad’s plane!”
“I know, Alan, but it’s not Dad.”
That quote, will always get me.
Remember what The Mechanic said about taking what he wants? Yeah, well he very nearly took Thunderbird Three down with the TV-21.
“Sorry Dad.”
I think he would always have rather had his sons, than his old plane, sad as it is to have been so close.
“The TV-21 was so close!”
“Dad really loved that plane.”
“Ah, in the end the TV-21 was just a bunch of steel and rivets. Your Father would never have risked failing a mission just to save it. What he really loved was us. All of us. His family.”
So, after all that, Thunderbird Four is fixed, and everyone has gathered together (even John) for a bit of well earned family time. Yep, there are hundreds of reasons to love these last two episodes.

At Concordia, we are very protective of family information and data. The school emails only information that is important and directly related to the school and student issues.
