Daily instrument — Mbira

The mbira, also known as the thumb piano and its similar modern equivalent, the kalimba, is an instrument from the Shona people of Zimbabwe 1000 years ago. The mbira has 22-28 metal keys of varied lengths. The keys are attached to a wooden soundboard called a gwariva. Thumbs pluck the metal keys downwards to produce sound. the forefinger pluckes upwards. The mbira was used by the Shona people in ceremonies and for religious purposes.

This is a beautiful documentary. Bela Fleck, arguably one of the greatest banjo players of all time, goes to Africa to explore the roots of his instrument and learn from the African masters.

Some gorgeous music in this documentary, and some mind-blowing musicians.

Tried my hand at replicating the Arcane style for a self portrait. I turned my duraplasty (patch of a cow's pericardium where a piece of my skull used to be) into an external, metallic patch to be more in line with how the prosthetics and body modifications in Arcane look

Hmmm what are some good instruments for people who have small hands, DO NOT have much hand dexterity, and also don't want to get any calluses cus they do fiber arts and fiber arts and calluses rlly do not mix well........ I want to do some kinda music at some point but idk WHAT

For this year's mermay I recreated the glowing billboard of "Chica of the sea" from Fnaf security breach alongside Roxanne wolf (who was originally portrayed as a scuba bothered by a crab) but I'm sure this fits more her character, she would be less ambitious with a friend next this time.

The ongoing rap discourse is really funny to me because like. Music is not a universal language. That's a stupid cliché. People like stuff that sounds kinda like stuff they've heard before because their brains already know how to process it. British people were super racist about it during the whole empire gambit. Now things spread more easily and people listen to a lot more variety of stuff than they used to, but there are still variables by language, region, platform, and, yes, class and race.

So you want to earn discourse points by listening to rap. Cool! Good, even! Expand your horizons! Start with some simple things. But also, you're making the assumption that all black or even non-white music is Black American music, maybe you'd like music from Saharan cell phones, or kalimba, or goto, or...

Maybe you want to earn discourse points by telling other people to listen to rap, and that they're bad people for not doing so. O-kay... but you're also losing discourse points by not considering neurodivergence, because the mental barrier to trying a new music can be significantly higher or even physically painful depending on your divergence.

You can't win the discourse war, guys. And you usually have more luck getting people to try things by being enthusiastic and providing links.
