Hi, I have a question. Are Shadow and Maria supposed to be seen as romantic in canon? I’ve seen that SA2 and their relationship was based on some romantic media and that they were compared to Beauty and the Beast by Sonic Team, but I’m not sure about it. Can I ask you what you think about this and how canon depicts their relationship? I always thought they were siblings so I’m confused. Sorry to bother you.

I promise you that you’re not bothering me at all! This is a very good question. Both English and Japanese gaming manuals have described them both to have a sibling-esque relationship. This means that they’re viewed as siblings and care for each other as siblings. Even the Sonic Channel art that was posted around the time Sonic X Shadow generations came out described them as “long-lost siblings.”

Shadow and Maria 100% love each other. That’s undeniable. They do not love each other romantically. They love each other platonically.
