MIAMI DADE COLLEGE'S 37TH MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL
Tumblr media
By Michael Bustamante & Rafa Carvajal
Tumblr media
The 37th Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival returns March 6-15, 2020. This year, the Festival will host more than 125 films of all genres from 30 different countries. The Burnt Orange Heresy by Charles Willeford will open the Festival at Miami's historic Olympia Theater. According to Director Jaie Laplante, "The film is swanky, steamy and sexy, with Willeford's jet-black, cruelly-ironic humor firmly intact." Jaie also added that "Charles Willeford's classic 1971 art world noir thriller The Burnt Orange Heresy has been updated by director Giuseppe Capotondi and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Scott Smith into a biting satire of the world of contemporary high art and the attendant, controversial role of art criticism that swirls around it – an apt examination for Miami's current major destination status on the international art market."
Other highlights include Miami Film Festival's Precious Gem Award, which will go to Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Ryan; and the Career Achievement Tribute, which will go to Spain's Goya-winning actress Emma Suárez. Finally, the Festival will come to a close with Mucho Mucho Amor, a fantastic documentary film by Cristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch, co-founder and co-director of O Cinema, about the late legend and famed astrologer Walter Mercado. "There will be no better way to wrap up our 37th year of sharing our love for cinema and Miami than with Cristina and Kareem's sharing of the incredible positivity and love that the life of Walter Mercado represents," explained Jaie Laplante.

In this week's issue, we showcase 12 spotlight film selections to preview some of the many outstanding films to be shown at this year's Festival.
Visit miamifilmfestival.com for more information, to view the full lineup of films and purchase tickets for this year's Festival films and parties. Besides exceptional films, the Festival always has a line-up of great parties that bring together cinephiles, actors, producers and directors.
Wire Magazine sat down with Associate Director of Programming Lauren Cohen to find out what she is looking forward to the most about this year's Miami Film Festival.
Rafa Carvajal: What does your job as associate director of programming for the Miami Film Festival entail? Lauren Cohen: As associate director of programming, I work closely with our Executive Director Jaie Laplante to build an overall image and creative strategy for what we want for each edition of the Festival. Miami Film Festival has grown so much in the years since its inception that it's a matter of brainstorming and finding new ways to take it to new heights.
Tumblr media
RC: What goes into programming the film lineup for a festival of this caliber? LC: We receive hundreds upon hundreds of submissions every year, and in addition to that, we go to some of the biggest film festivals in the world to scout out the best films that have already premiered for what we think is a collection of the absolute must-see movies of the year. So it comes down to being highly selective and really honing in on fresh programming angles that we think will resonate with our audience.
RC: What are the main highlights of the 2020 Miami Film Festival? LC: One of the highlights of this year's Festival that I'm most excited about is our fantastic opening night film, The Burnt Orange Heresy, which stars Donald Sutherland, Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, and Mick Jagger. It's the perfect way to kick things off – it's this twisty, sexy thriller and really sharp satire of the contemporary art world, which is something we can all relate to with Art Basel. Plus, it has a local connection, as the novel it was based on was written by late Miami novelist Charles Willeford.
Then there's our closing night, which will wrap up the Festival with Mucho Mucho Amor, an incredibly warm and affectionate documentary on legendary Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado. It's directed by Cristina Costantini and O Cinema co-founder and Miami native Kareem Tabsch, and it's really such a lovely, positive note to end our 37th edition on.
Tumblr media
RC: Tell our readers about the importance of the Miami Film Festival for our community and film in general. LC: Miami Film Festival is all about championing local filmmakers and stories. This year especially, we're so proud to have such a strong lineup for our Knight Made in MIA competition, which features films like Reefa, which tells the story of the 2013 police taser death of 18-year-old Israel Hernandez in Miami Beach; Us Kids, a Sundance documentary about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas student activists who started the March For Our Lives movement following the Parkland shooting; and the world premiere of Michael Tilson Thomas: Where Now Is, an intimate look at the founder of Miami's New World Symphony. These are important stories, and we're excited that Miami moviegoers will be among some of the very first audiences to experience them.
RC: What are you looking forward to the most about this year's Miami Film Festival? LC: There are so many things I'm looking forward to, it's hard to pick… but one of the things I'm most excited for is this year's edition of Knight Heroes, which will feature filmmakers Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), Stella Meghie (The Photograph), and Lulu Wang (The Farewell) in a two-hour, in-person discussion where they'll share in-depth insights into their creative processes.
RC: Can you give us a quick preview of this year's parties? LC: In addition to our opening and closing night parties, we have a ton of great parties in our soirée series this year, including The Confidante Retro Affair at The Confidante's 1930s style Spanish bungalow on Miami Beach; the Chateau Melinda Party, which will feature an ultra Miami vibe at Melinda's; the Toyota Nightshade Mixer, where the historic Jewel Box at YoungArts will be brought to life with street art and Peruvian-inspired cuisine; The India Party at the InterContinental Hotel; and The Directors Party, which will take place in Palm Court at the Miami Design District and will be headlined by The Secret In Their Eyes director Juan Jose Campanella.
Tumblr media
RC: What films are you most looking forward to? LC: Some of my personal favorite films of this year's Festival are Military Wives, The Personal History of David Copperfield, They Call Me Dr. Miami, and White Lie.
RC: Who are some celebrities who will attend the Festival this year? LC: One of our big highlights this year is that we'll be presenting actress Amy Ryan with our prestigious Precious Gem Award celebrating her incredible career – she was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone, and is well known for her popular role as Holly on the show The Office. Following the award presentation, we'll be screening her new true crime thriller Lost Girls, which just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. So it'll be a really special opportunity for fans of hers to be able to see her honored in person and participate in an extended on-stage conversation on her new film!

This Book is a fantastic voyage of Steampunk! The pages hidden between the lovely covers are full of fun and amazingly well layed out projects created, innovated and presented in a wonderfully easy to follow and incredibly well written and thought out style. Go to Amazon
Best Gall Darn DIY book Ever! Go to Amazon
He's #1 For a Reason Thomas Willeford is unarguably the most photographed and talked about artist in the Steampunk Community. It's no surprise that his book is not only beautiful (well it does have Lady Clankington on the cover!)but it also has meat on it's bones. It's the maker's How-To Book and a must have for any proper Steampunk Library. Willeford's step-by-step, cautions and how-to hints are a treasure and we are all the better for his opening the doors of Grimmelore Manor to show us what's inside that genius brain of his. I've been waiting for Book Two! Hope to see that soon. Go to Amazon
I love this book, Steampunk rules! I had gotten into Steampunk, somewhat, a few years ago. The concept always fascinated me as I grew up a Jules Verne and H.G. Wells fan. Their world of ideas was far-reaching, with wonderous concepts of what the future could be like, from a Victorian perspective. It's really remarkable how some of those concepts eventually materialized (portable wireless communication devices, flying machines, trips into outer space, etc.). The world of Steampunk brings much of that awe and wonder in design to our current modern world. It's nice to see the great "days gone by" living in front of us again. Sometimes, we must remember to give respect to our past, and sometimes, that past may have still bee the best or classiest way. Go to Amazon
Great Book ! I you like Steampunk and building stuff then this is for you. Go to Amazon
Exactly what I was looking for, something for a seasoned builder. I started getting into steampunk and wanted a book with some info to make steampunk accessories. This was exactly what I was looking for. It is not for a beginner maker but someone a bit more seasoned. Lots of good into and tips, will be build some of the complicated stuff soon. Go to Amazon
Great projects from a great artist I have made several of the projects in this book, and I love it! There are a few items listed to use, but Mr. Willeford makes it easy to either substitute with something else, using my own creativity, or providing the object. For example, the brass plumbing piece used to make the goggles is difficult to find, so he posted on his Facebook page that he would sell that piece! Also, the cannon on the helmet decoration can be substituted with a different item, or you can find a how-to video on YouTube of Mr. W showing how to make a mini cannon out of a brass rod! How awesome is that! Go to Amazon
Very nice book Very interesting book. Lots of good information and ideas. Go to Amazon
This is it! These are so great! Five Stars Five Stars Five Stars Good Guide, but low Quality Five Stars Five Stars An Authority on Steampunk Five Stars

Oh my: Joe Biden 46, Trump 35?
Oh my: Joe Biden 46, Trump 35? - Hot Air Hot Air Glancing at the headline, you would think this was a dynamite poll for good ol' Uncle Joe.
Tumblr media
Is it? A twice-elected VP famous for his alleged common touch should be doing better than a generic Democratic candidate, you would think. And yet.
Tumblr media
What this poll tells you is (a) Biden has no serious baggage (yet) that makes him appreciably worse off than a random Democrat, quite in contrast to certain other recent Democratic nominees who shall remain nameless, and (b) Trump is in the toilet. Thirty-four percent for a sitting president against a generic opponent is ominous; 34 percent for a sitting president against a generic opponent while the Dow is at an all-time high and the economy is chugging along is really ominous. YouGov is out with a new poll today that also coincidentally pegs his job approval at 34 percent, a new low. He's lost nearly four points in approval since late September in the RCP poll average too. Passing tax reform would help with that by proving that a Trump-led GOP can in fact get things done. But if tax reform collapses and more Republican voters start to feel disaffected, who knows where this ends. Back to Biden, though, as his potential candidacy is interesting for various reasons. One is that he clearly wants to do it, openly regretting that he doesn't hold the top job today. He may be the closest thing Democrats still have to a blue-collar politician with a national profile. He's woke enough for the left and, at least in theory, down-to-earth enough for the Rust Belt. But he's reeeeeally old. He'll be almost 78 on Election Day 2020. All along I've been thinking that that in itself would be disqualifying in a primary, but increasingly I wonder. There are multiple senators older than that who are still on the job. Longevity expectations increase every year. Above all, by the time 2020 arrives, I think Democrats will be so frantic to unseat Trump that they'll tolerate almost any potential flaw in a nominee *if* they're convinced he or she would stand the best chance of winning the general election. They won't care if President Biden serves a month before having to retire due to the strains of old age. Just pick a VP who's ready to step in on day one and win, baby, win. That'll be their mentality. As I say, they'll tolerate almost any flaw in a nominee -- but maybe not quite every one. The reason I said Biden doesn't have any serious baggage "yet" is because his busy-hands problem around women has started to gain some more attention on the left recently, just as Bill Clinton's harassment and alleged rape problem has. Is the Weinstein scandal and its fallout also going to engulf Uncle Joe's already slim presidential chances? Here's Erin Gloria Ryan at the Daily Beast: While Joe Biden has been jokingly depicted as a kooky uncle or Obama's wacky sidekick or Leslie Knope's grin-flashing celebrity crush, he's also got a troubling history of acting weird in public around women who don't seem entirely on board. This isn't just based on whispers or rumors; there are so many photos and clips of Biden looming over, or massaging, or gently nuzzling, or whispering to, or kissing women and girls who don't seem all that into it that for awhile, a few years ago, it was a bit of a meme... Joe Biden's off-putting caresses and whispers are by no means the same thing as what Bill Clinton allegedly did to Juanita Broaderick, or what the Clinton camp did to Monica Lewinsky. But the #MeToo moment, the post-Weinstein moment, whatever you want to call it- isn't about only sexual assault; it's about women standing up and saying that when men do things to them non-consensually, women don't like it. It hurts us. It should stop. As long as Democrats want to be taken seriously when they take a stand against Republicans who commit sexual misconduct, they have to demonstrate that they are equally uncomfortable or outraged when Democrats do it. A Biden candidacy would be a fascinating test of Democrats' newfound commitment to punishing bad behavior towards women by prominent Democratic men. In the end, I think they'll arrive where Ryan does: His handsiness is creepy and problematic but in the end it's a venial sin compared to what Clinton or Harvey Weinstein is accused of. It's not even clear that he does it from a lecherous impulse, as I've noted before. But this isn't the only sexual harassment issue that Biden would face: He'll also be grilled by Democrats on why he didn't support online dispensary Canada Anita Hill more aggressively when she testified before his Judiciary Committee against Clarence Thomas. Biden has already begun apologizing for that episode, knowing how it might haunt him. His saving grace if he runs will of course be Trump, though. Any Democrat bothered by his behavior towards women can always rationalize it on lesser-of-two-evils grounds by comparing it with what Trump has been accused of. It won't hurt him. Here he is a few days ago talking about gun control after the massacre at the Sutherland Springs church. This clip is circulating as evidence that Biden said the man who helped stop the shooter, Devin Kelley, by firing at him with his own rifle as Kelley left the church shouldn't have been allowed to have a gun himself. That's not how it sounds to me. Biden is *asked* whether that man, Stephen Willeford, should have had a gun but his answer seems to address whether *Kelley*, the murderer, should have been allowed to. Notice how he starts talking about crazy people buying weapons. That's Kelley, not Willeford. Whether he misunderstood the question or deliberately didn't answer it, judge for yourself. Joe Biden says that the man who stopped the Texas church shooter should not have been armed. pic.twitter.com/pY3hBHPHuX -- Ryan Saavedra ?? (@RealSaavedra) November 14, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Steampunk Projects for People with Limited to No Skillsets (Like Me)
5.0 out of 5 stars A great beginners book for steampunk projects! Having already purchased his previous book I was wondering how this book would be. It has projects aimed at either younger readers (teens or smart pre-teens) and/or adults with limited skills. (his previous book is more adult types of projects ... as far a skill sets) It is well worth the money and a valuable book in my collection. I've been collecting "parts" and one of these days will actually make something.Rather than work with real leather he shows a way to make imitation leather that is quite believable for projects that will not see heavy use. Instead of real rivets he shows you how to use paper fasteners to get the same effect. There are complete patterns in the back of the book to help you along, and (of course) complete instructions for the non-technical among us. Some of the projects will need to be re-sized if made for an adult. As a "starter book" for steampunk projects this is an ideal choice. Go to Amazon
5.0 out of 5 stars Great maker book Steampunk Adventurer's Guide is geared to a wide age range, which makes sense since Steampunk attracts a wide audience, including kids. The chapters are tied together with an adventure story (Phil Foglio is involved in that part) that draw you into an alternate history world based on steampower. You might think the projects wouldn't be of interest to adults, but you'd be wrong. It delves into making goggles, nerf gun conversion, armor, and much more -- all sorts of projects of interest to Steampunks of all ages -- but made accessible to younger minds as well as adults -- all without being dumbed down. This is an excellent introduction to the world of making. The discussion in Chapter 2 and various bits of commentary throughout the book on materials and tools are useful not for just Steampunk projects but could easily be applied to other types of projects. The instructions are clear and the hints invaluable. I've always appreciated people who were willing to explain not just how, but why. There's also some nifty stuff at the end of the book, like the measurements conversion table, as well as reading and viewing recommendations for folks who are new to Steampunk and would like to learn more about it. Definitely a worthy addition to the library! Go to Amazon
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! A fun read, with lots of good projects for kids! We were somewhat disappointed that the wings won't actually let your child fly (we'll miss that one, but hey, we have two more!), and it turns out that fueling the rocket pack is very difficult to do safely (oh well, one left but he's our fav anyway), but overall the projects are fun and the boys...er.. boy loves his new gear. Thanks! Go to Amazon
4.0 out of 5 stars Nice but . . . I have to admit that when I first got this book I was disappointed by the choice of materials ( foam and adhesive tapes ) for the projects presented.I had previously bought Thomas Willefords "Steampunk Gear, Gadgets, and Gizmos: A Maker's Guide to Creating Modern Artifacts" which features projects made mostly of metal, leather, etc.On reflection I found my initial assessment unfair as the two books are aimed at different age groups. "Steampunk Gear, Gadgets, and Gizmos" is written for an adult audience and the skills and tools required reflect that."The Steampunk Adventurers Guide" projects are tailored towards a much younger adventurer and would be great projects for a parent to build with their child. The book is written as a steampunk adventure story and the project instructions are inserted into the book whenever the young adventurers build the gadgets to help them in their quest.Nice book for the younger steampunk fan who likes to build stuff.
