greetings vintage shoujo manga fans!

something I have wanted to do for a while now is create a database / wiki which documents as close to every single pre-1990s shoujo as possible, as every english-language manga database is severely lacking in this regard... and I have started it! however, because this is a giant project, I need to inform as many people who may be interested in contributing as possible. I have created a Miraheze wiki to host the content, and am very slowly adding the information I have accrued to the pages. (Its completely bare bones right now, I'm basically just testing things)

Please comment or message me if you have any interest in helping out with this as I want to spread the word as much as I can! If it's just me editing I'll literally never add everything at this rate lol.

wh0 is the best OC youve ever created hand down and like a total list of all OCS

I wanted to wait to answer this until I had a digital artwork completed of every OC that I have, bc a lot of them I’ve only ever hand drawn (my favorite ,, I love me some good pencil to paper art)

But , I figured I’d be waiting forever, bc with so much going on, and so many other drawing projects I have in the works, this ask would be long forgotten until I saw it in my inbox months down the road and went oh fuck me ,, I forgot to do that.

Sooo , to answer the first part of the question, I don’t think I have a ‘best OC’, because I literally love all my sweet babies so much. They all have their beautiful qualities, and all have their lil garbage ones. They’re all such well rounded characters HHHH, and I want to squeeze them all to death in my arms in one giant group hug.

They would probably hate/fear me if they ever were actually in my presence because, well, I’ve put all of them through some pretty fucked up shit. Some worse than others LOL.

I will now compile a list of all my OC’s.

Later, I will be adding drawings of my darlings, as I so please, in whatever order, because I really want to try and make my tumblr more of a space for my OC shit. If I could someday get asks directed towards specific OC’s of mine,,,, that,.. would be a dream come true .

hi ok i need to prefacew by saying that i saw this post and the autism consumed me insantly and i couldnt think about anything else for hours other than finding out what shoujo artist this is meant to be emulating, if anyone specific at all.

i feel like most ppl in this fandom mildly aware of any of the year 24 group's* works would be to assume this is either keiko takemiya (kazeki) or riyoko ikeda (rose of versailles)'s art; just because here those are probably the most well known artists/works - theres been some kazeki fandom crossover and ikeda's by far the most well known in general anime circles

*thats the name critics gave the highly influential group of shoujo manga artists in the 70's that helped establish shoujo genre tropes and expanding the themes and subjects of many stories by including more complex elements like politics. they also all had similar artstyles, making figuring out if this is meant to emulate someone specific incredibly difficult.

and i think those are def. justified - esp. riyoko ikeda's you can REALLY see marie antoinette in lizzie here, and i feel like another part of this is ciels stupid fucking 1790s ass outfit - but i want to talk about 2 others because. i like 70s shoujo art.

ok this is why i made this part of the post because ryoko yamagishi's manga shiroi heya no futari is credited with cementing a lot of tropes in the yuri genre and i think thats really interesting. and i can sort see her style in the eyes and the frills are imo the closest to lizzies dress here

it could also be possible and much more likely yana was just trying to create a general "early shoujo" style and mashed all the artstyles together ?? riyoko ikeda was for sure the main influence here tho

Ok but hear me out....The Secret History is a 1970s shojo manga

So I’m kinda joking here but actually I’m kinda not like The Secret History is actually structurally identical to a 1970s shojo manga, like:

- Takes place in an vaguely 20th century academic setting for rich people and is equal parts about aestheticizing the setting and exposing its dark side - Hapless and relatably dopey protagonist transfer student stumbles into a cool club of older, mysterious students and uncovers staggering levels of fucked-up interpersonal drama between them while also crushing on all of them?? This is literally just the plot of The Heart of Thomas - Hightly Internal psychodrama about murders happening at a school which snowballs tragically because of the absolutely heinous interpersonal dynamics of the main characters, as well as the individual psychological houses of cards they’ve built based on their impressions of each other - All characters except for the protagonist are either Darkly Handsome or Otherworldly And Blonde and dress in exceedingly sumptuous 1970s fashion - Obsessed with the question of Beauty, and exploring the dissonance of juxtaposing elegant Romantic aesthetics and the ugliness and violence of interpersonal relationships - Undeniably homoerotic in a female-gaze sort of way, but its queerness is never really unpacked (definitively queer characters end up dead and queer-in-subtext-only characters end up in straight relationships)

Like this book could straight up have been written by Moto Hagio or Riyoko Ikeda.

Idk what my point is here. Maybe it’s that the dark academia people and the shojo manga people should be talking to each other more and realize that they are actually on about the exact same shit. Maybe it’s that I want a shojo adaption of The Secret History. Actually, if I had a billion dollars, I would purchase the comic adaptation rights to The Secret History and give them to Moto Hagio just to see what she would do with them. I want to live in that world.

the next week goes by and this kid has told all of his friends that i have a crush on him???? that i was like flirting (even though we pretty much only talked about the assignment)  and he thought it was embarrassing on my part????? and everyone is asking me about it and it won’t go away

eventually i had to pull him aside after class and be like. look you need to stop telling people i’m into you because i genuinely think you’re a douchebag

Drowned Dreams: Part 2, now with Basket Fish, Dancing, and Blue Eyes

Continuation from my previous post! Let us now meet the lovely Basket Fish. He's...quite the guy.

I can never get over how LoM has genius character designs (the concept of Jumi? Amazing, and each individual is designed and written so well).

And then you literally have a fish in a basket with legs and he's named Basket Fish.

And he's a noveau rich jerk who loves looking down on people,

I love this game.

Oh, and according to the art book, Art of Mana, character designer Nao Ikeda made his character as a concept of a half-human character. She also finds it funny they just named him Basket Fish lol. According to her notes, though, Basket Fish is actually a hermit crab-type creature that took over the basket as a sort of parasite, which sounds kind of gross.

Oh, and I'm not joking about the "with legs" part. He has them. (insert the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon screenshot here).

Or more like he's got a pair of admittedly nice looking boots to walk with.

Unfortunately, Basket Fish is even more horrible than you think he is with being a creep to Revanshe, and the game does not shy away from it.

Poor Revanshe.

But she comes in helpful with her charms a bit later.

After the whole deal with Basket Fish happens, you can poke into Inspector Boyd's business some more, and he finally reveals what's he's doing.

Unfortunately, he's off the mark as always, asking about persons with blue eyes, and suggesting Thoma might have them will move the plo on.

Episode 4 of the anime is titled Sapphire if I'm not mistaken, so anime-only Mystery Blue Jumi, who's probably the Blue Eye, is also a sapphire Jumi.

I'm still really stoked to see they revisit this quest in the anime and give a face to a Jumi who we don't even get to know.
