Richards' Last Charge:
Followed by a small mounted group of his most faithful men, the young king (he was only thirty-two years old) charged headlong into the enemy lines, Swinging his ax, he bore down and killed Brandon, Henry's standard-bearer. Before him loomed the gigantic figure of Sir John Cheney. A single blow unhorsed the powerful knight. Richard's right arm seemed strong enough to cut his way clear through to where his opponent stood. On his left arm , his "weerish, withered arm," he bore his heavy shield and with it also he controlled the wild course of his maddened steed.
It was a magnificent effort and almost brought the leaders face to face. But the king's handful had thinned behind him. He stood alone at last and fought singlehanded against the Lancastrians who now swarmed about him. His armor broken, his ax limp with his weariness, he went down under the blows of his enemies.
Nothing in history excels this mad exploit of sheer daring. -----

Must we reiterate that Fire & Blood is the account of what occurred during the Dance of the Dragons from two awfully different perspectives, NOT what truly happened. It is up to the interpretation of the reader and thus, the show runners, to change who, what, where, why, and how. That is the beauty of Fire & Blood. That is how GRRM wanted it to be.
Written by GRRM himself, April 25 2018.
"I do want to stress… indeed, I want to shout… that FIRE & BLOOD is not a novel. This is not a traditional narrative and was never intended to be. Some of my fans have objected to the term “fake history” that I’ve bandied about in past blog posts and announcements in reference to “The Princess and the Queen” and “Sons of the Dragon” and the like. Very well; let’s call this one “imaginary history” instead. The essential point being the “history” part. I love reading popular histories myself, and that’s what I was aiming for here. Not historical fiction, not fantasy, no… but something more akin to Thomas B. Costain’s monumental (and wonderfully entertaining) four-volume history of the Plantagenets. (But with dragons. Did I mention the dragons?)
So: not a novel. Everyone clear on that?"

My favourite part about the narrative around Matilda that GRRM chose to base Rhaenyra's on, is how she bided her time until Stephen's administrative mismanagement turned enough sentiment against him, and basically crossed to England shouting, "I'm really good at administration!"
Anyways, that's why you'll never convince me of those headcanons that aren't even really supported in Fire and Blood that Rhaenyra was incompetent or unprepared to assume normal Crown duties.

If we’re getting into Doylistic stuff wrt the Doctrine of Exceptionalism, my issue is the implausibility of it working. Are the people of Westeros really just that sheep-like? No clergy stepped up to point out how they’re basically just shills for Jaehaerys, or the self-serving nature of his doctrine?  Where is the Domingo de Guzman, the Thomas Aquinas, the Athanasius of Alexandria, the Bernard of Clairvaux to rail against the throne preaching heresy?  Is the setting we have been previously show really the kind of place where people accept a change to their religion, contradicting everything their latest religious authorities have been saying, when said change is preached by a woman who was one of their anathematized persecutor’s partners-in-sin?
This looks seriously like Benioff and Weiss levels of “narratively it made sense, because we wanted it to happen” plotting.  This is like Brandon Sanderson writing a legislature voting to throw away their power to teenage protagonist executive, because a couple of legislators arrive late and we have the following exchange of dialogue: Newcomer A: “What motion are we (vot)ing on?”
Debating legislator: “An important one”
Newcomer A: “Well I suppose I’ll (vote) for it then.”
Newcomer B: “As will I.” (These four lines are verbatim, except I substituted “vote” for the actual word {stand} used in the book, which has the same meaning in that context.  This was actually written by an adult human being)
Debating legislator: “Argh! That’s a majority! We have just surrendered all the legal methods for opposing a tyrannical executive officer, as well as handed the same official unilateral control over foreign policy.”
Brandon Sanderson: “Now my teenage protagonist can go on to rule better than any of their grownup predecessors and no one can obstruct them with reasonable differences of opinion or nonsense like checks and balances! Now my readers will see why they are a truly great leader.”
GRRM, trying to avoid working on WoW: “Well, I’ve basically exhausted all the inspiration from Costain or Druon, maybe I will read a Brandon Sanderson book... Well, shit. If he can do it, why not me?”
Following on the question about Jaherys I's worst decision: why specifically would you chalk the Doctrine lf Exceptionalism as a bad decision? It did achieve the intended purpose of settling the disputes with the Faith, right? Or a I missing something?
I don't really think it did. Given the drubbing that the Faith Militant took, and Jaehaerys's ability to propose a compromise in exchange for becoming Defender of the Faith was what really settled the disputes with the Faith, not necessarily the Doctrine of Exceptionalism.
Anyway, I think the problem with the Doctrine of Exceptionalism is when it was proven wrong. The Doctrine largely debunked itself when Darling Daenerys died of the Shivers, which should have sent the Faith into a bit of an uproar as the doctrine that rationalizes the marriages seen as an abomination is proven to be incorrect. Honestly, it should be causing problems even further down the line with marriages like Aegon IV to Naerys, since now the Targaryens aren't riding dragons which is part of the basis of the Doctrine.
That might be me overthinking it though.
Thanks for the question, Inquiridor.

The Last Love, by Thomas B. Costain. In which chubby, grumpy, ex-emperor Napoleon falls in love for the last time on St. Helena. Fantastic book, friggin’ loved it. Also, I hope y’all can appreciate how long it took to get a semi-nice shot of this. Those plants are fidgety little monsters.
