I will add that even though we know A LOT about extinct animals, there are obviously many exceptions. Some species only have a few partial fossils found so far, meaning we know some but not a ton about them, and sadly many many extinct species simply aren’t known about as we haven’t found fossils of them yet.

However! We are CONSTANTLY learning and discovering more about history, extinct animals included. Just because we don’t know everything, does not mean that we don’t know a great deal more than Hollywood and social media would lead you to believe.

Some amazing resources that I personally enjoy watching to learn more about palaeontology and cool animal facts in general (as a casual enjoyer, I have zero academic experience) are a few YouTube channels:

Lindsay Nikole (she’s doing a series called history of the world as we know it rn, it’s awesome, but she makes other stuff too):

Seven days of science series by Ben G Thomas (there are several sibling channels listed on their page, they’re all cool)

PBS Eons (their shorts are very good, and their long form videos are even better)

And History of the Earth (amazing documentaries, worthy of the history channel BEFORE it went to shit)

For non-extinct animals, Real Science is really fun! They’re what got me into marine biology and the reason the octopus is my favourite animal. Also they taught me that pudge ones are cool as fuck. If you like engineering, they also have a sister channel for that linked on their page.

Less specialised, but SciShow has some great episodes about this kinda thing as well! Hank Green and his team are awesome.

And while I’m at it, if you’re also interested in the Human Fossils (aka archaeology and anthropology), Milo Rossi from Miniminuteman is where it’s at! He’s got some great stuff in his channel, super fun, and knows how to do commentary/reaction/debunking videos without being outright mean and instead just sarcastically informative.

I submit to you that the most iconic feature of any animal is either unlikely or impossible to fossilize.

If all we had of wolves were their bones we would never guess that they howl.

If all we had of elephants were fossils with no living related species, we might infer some kind of proboscis but we’d never come up with those ears.

If all we had of chickens were bones, we wouldn’t know about their combs and wattles, or that roosters crow.

We wouldn’t know that lions have manes, or that zebras have stripes, or that peacocks have trains, that howler monkeys yell, that cats purr, that deer shed the velvet from their antlers, that caterpillars become butterflies, that spiders make webs, that chickadees say their name, that Canada geese are assholes, that orangutans are ginger, that dolphins echolocate, or that squid even existed.

My point here is that we don’t know anything about dinosaurs. If we saw one we would not recognize it. As my evidence I submit the above, along with the fact that it took us two centuries to realize they’d been all around us the whole time.

forever obsessed w the fact that in bh lore vampires do actually die and stay dead for a short bit and then come back wrong. something that sadly never really gets elaborated on but that i find deeply fascinating bc it is implied that they remember the afterlife! which is such a cool and insane nugget of lore to give ur vampires like hello. also the implication that it scared the shit out of them, or at least out of mitchell..... can we talk about it!
