Hi, I know you’re a fan of namjoon so I wanted to ask your thoughts on this ring thing? I’m kinda new and assumed all these namjoon is married with kids stuff were a joke. But some people seem to totally believe that. I mean where he’d get the time to see a partner and kids is beyond me but who knows? Anyways I was looking at some of their recent pics and he doesn’t wear it all the time - which if it was a couples ring - wouldn’t he? I thought maybe he would only wear it if they were appearing on Run or Korean shows, but he didn’t have it on for either of the new shows they’ve been on recently, as they may not have been as widely watched. I mean I guess it’s none of our business - but I’m trying to rip of my delulu hat for making me think Seokjin gave it to him 🙈

Hi anon, I hope you don’t mind that I’ll combine my answer for you with my answer to another ask since I feel like they fall into the same kind of category, as in people taking things too far and/or blowing things out of proportion. And, coincidentally, both have something to do with rings.

I’ll start with your question though and give you another example that followed a very similar trajectory as the omg namjoon is married with kids because ring narrative/theory. Some months ago, Namjoon posted a few pictures on twitter and among them was a picture of him with another guy wearing a green sweater. His face though was covered. At first ARMY didn’t think much of it, but then, eventually, someone started a joke that “remember that sweater Joon wore for BV4? The guy is wearing the same one, what if that's his boyfriend?” and it went viral.

It started out completely harmless with hundreds of positive and funny tweets made in good humor, no one taking it that seriously knowing that we’d never find out even if it were true. But, as the jokes started to simmer down, everyone had their laugh, the next wave came in and this one decided that this isn’t a joke at all but serious matter. Quickly this harmless fun turned into a witch hunt of “ARMY” trying to figure out who the guy might be, if he is Namjoon’s mysterious friend that once sent him a coffee truck with custom drawn designs on it, perhaps the same one with whom Namjoon already once posted a picture sitting on this garden porch swing type thing, some even trying to prove that the guy is either Seokjin (in which case, what would be the need to cover his face?) or Florist Isaac whom they met during that one RUN episode.

The ring thing followed a similar story. It was once a harmless joke based on the fact that Namjoon wants to have kids one day, so some made jokes about what if he’s already married but we just didn’t know etc. But very quickly that got out of hand as well, going as far as people claiming the little girl in his pictures which he posted around his birthday or something is his daughter (even though it was said it’s probably the child actress from BTS WORLD) and that him making jokes (during a BangtanB while trying on glasses before their MOTS7 press con) about his child being able to read/write hangul at a very young age wasn’t jokes at all but solid proof of the fact that he is married with a child (despite the fact that he would’ve had to have gotten married and his wife pregnant not long after their debut for the timeline to even work out somehow which makes it seem even more ridiculous). This even went as far as people spamming the comments during this vlives with questions about it, flooded his selcas on twitter with questions and “jokes” and, again, attacked anyone who told them to stop.

In all of this, watching it happen from the sidelines as someone whose bias is Namjoon, I was confused why these particular rings (which I don’t even think were the same ones each time) caused such a reaction. The members have all worn so many different rings over the years, on all fingers, sometimes even like eight at the same time, and yet it wasn’t until 2020 and their KBS interview after their first BBH100 #1 that things went bonkers. All because Namjoon decided to take the ring off before they started filming or something.

In all of this I see two things that make me wonder:

When would he have the time to find a girl (since same sex marriage is not a thing in Korea) with whom he would have enough time to befriend her, trust her (considering who Namjoon is, that one is a major thing), fall in love, date and be together for a few years, and then get married? From Seokjin we know they have maybe two or three days off a month and work at least ten hours a day on their BH regulated schedules. Add to that the time they spend in the studio working on music outside of schedules, gym time, a few hours of sleep, and perhaps a few scarce hours of free time to (in Namjoon’s case) go to a museum or ride his bike, does that really leave enough time for romance (with an outsider) that leads to marriage (and a child)?

Is age 26 at the height of their career really the time for marriage? Even more so when you are someone like Namjoon, the leader of the world’s biggest group with more responsibilities than we can likely imagine as outsiders. Sure, he said he wants kids, but he can still have those in his thirties, he can also get married in his thirties, after all, life does not end once you hit thirty despite what some teens believe.

Lastly, I actually think that if it were true, Namjoon, or really anyone from the hyung line, would be the ones who wouldn’t have to hide it, at least not when compared to the maknaes. You could argue that “it would threaten their career” but would it really? Perhaps if the ring were from a man (some namjinists did make jokes that it’s like his promise ring from Seokjin or whatever, but it was all in good fun, nothing more than that), then yes, but connected to a woman? That one member from EXO also came out and said he’s getting married because his fiancé was pregnant and all it did was cause a few fansites to close and a handful of people to “protest” in front of the SM building.

Little correction about my comments about that EXO member, though even with this my point still stands:

From what I read online, he his fiancée and later wife, and his child were harassed, threatened and stalked to the point where he enlisted early just to give his family some relief. We all know there are people like this in every fandom and I know BTS would be aware of these things, so they’ll be extra careful.

Would there be delulus like this who’d go crazy if Namjoon were to say “ARMY, I’m (getting) married”? Of course. Would it ruin BTS’ career? I seriously doubt it. Do I think Namjoon would actually come out and say it if it were the case? No, but not because it’s bad idol etiquette or because BH wouldn’t allow him, but because people are insane and who knows what they would do.

It’s the same with times when people argue “I wish X ML members would just say he has a girlfriend so the ship wars would end” without taking into consideration the girl’s safety and the fact that a partner different than the one X member is shipped with has never been that big of an obstacle for some before. Just create a conspiracy theory about the company forcing this upon them and voila problem solved. We’ve seen that before when the tattoo scandal happened, and people thought JK might be dating that tattoo artist and therefore it would mean he isn’t in a relationship with Jimin or Tae.

Whatever happens in the members private lives, it is safer for all parties involved if it stays private, even more so if their romantic partners were non-idols, or non-celebrities, or another member.

Now onto the second ring question:

Now this one, I was curious if we’d get an ask about this, even more since, if you’re a reader of our blog, you likely already know what I’m going to say.

Let’s start where you usually do—at the beginning. The day of the vlive coincided with what T*ek*okers have decided on is T*ek*ok Day, based on how supposedly some years ago this was the day Tae and JK named their subunit like this. I tried to find where exactly this happened, as in in which piece of official content, but I couldn’t find anything except for a screenshot. Anyone have a clue or a link?

Side note: T*ek*okers love using the “ship” naming as proof that not only are they real but also proudly showing it off by giving themselves a name but continently forget that they are not the only ones who gave themselves subunit names. After all Jimin and Namjoon named themselves MiniMoni, or Yoongi and Jimin who are MiniMini, Namjoon and Seokjin calling themselves RJRJ last year, or that one vlive with JK, Jimin and Seokjin where they also put together their names the way you build ship names. At the end of that vlive Tae, thanks to come prompting from the chat, named their trio vsope, so does that mean they are a romantic ship now too?

If you were watching that vlive as it was happening, and decided to look at the chat, then you know what was happening. For those who did not, basically the chat was flooded with comments about T*ek*ok Day, asking where JK is whom Tae loves, where his boyfriend JK is, congratulating Tae for T*ek*ok Day etc. Basically shippers took their shipping into a space where it doesn’t belong, into a space where the members can see it, and therefore purposefully broke one of the shipping rules (I even saw some tweet about how they were proud of themselves for literally spamming the chat with T*ek*ok comments which is so wrong, and I mean that regardless of which ship we talk about). In between those were the usual other comments like speak English or say hello to XYZ or say XYZ in whatever language, and very few comments that actually reacted to what the members were doing on screen. Like when Tae said he didn’t shave, instead of telling him that it’s fine, which it is, it’s his face after all, some decided to tell him he should shave more often, basically telling him what to do, which he saw and read out. Great job.

But all the madness came to a “climax” when Hobi was reading comments and among some other ones read out T*ek*ok, just the word not the T*ek*ok Day ones, and unfortunately we all knew he wasn’t reading out the Korean word for Thailand, which sounds the same though it is spelled a little differently. In that moment all hell broke loose. Focus cams of Tae’s facial expression in that moment went viral among shippers, most of course claiming he looked so happy, while other non-shippers claimed he didn’t look happy at all. It’s a micro moment so I won’t get into it, who knows what Tae thought in that moment and what his facial expression meant and if it even had any connection to the word and Hobi reading it out loud at all.

Because he read that comment, Hobi was basically crowned the new leader of the T*ek*ok shippers (I thought that role already went to Jimin?) and twitter basically had a meltdown.

As for the ring, I know this is something a lot of ships have, with romantic connotations according to their shippers, so I was curious how these rings supposedly look like in T*ek*ok’s case and if they even match the ring that Tae wore in the vlive. If it would, fine, if not, well…

If it’s not clear from the picture, the “supposed couple” or friendship rings are very delicate and thin, and sure enough I did find a lot of pictures in which both Tae and JK wore them, usually at different times, I will admit that. But the ring Tae wore during their vlive recently was much thicker and had some kind of design on it, therefore it’s a completely different one. Sorry. Why he wore it, if he bought it for himself or received it from someone, what emotional connotation to may or may not have, those are things we won’t know anything about unless he would tell us, so there's no point in speculating.

“Many say it was a Tk*ok day (?) And all three emphasized it” now this is curious to me since I watched the vlive as it was happening, and I didn’t see that at any point in the vlive. Sure, Hobi read that one comment, but if 95% of comments were about that, I wasn’t even surprised by it. Perhaps he thought that it would get people to stop? Perhaps he just read whatever comments his eyes landed on? Perhaps something else entirely? We have no way of knowing it so there is no point in trying to fixate on it. But besides that, they were talking about many other things and having fun making their smoothies, decorating them and just having a good time together with each other and with ARMY.

So, this way of presenting the vlive basically comes down to shipper perception, confirmation bias, and simply, almost, rewriting history.

Rings do not determine who your best friend is (according to a quick google search, wearing a ring on your index finger simply means friendship or self-esteem/authority), after all many of the members have rings either from each other or ones that match, like Namjoon buying Jimin a Cartier ring for his birthday a few years ago which Jimin proudly wore since it’s really pretty, or pink and blue rings (there are several different ones, actually) that Namjoon has worn with Seokjin in the past (which fits into the Namjinist pink and blue agenda), or the rings Jimin and JK have together according to their shippers, and many more. Jimin and Tae have a whole plethora of matching jewelry in form of necklaces, rings, bracelets, even contact lenses (as in wearing one of each pair to match each other), some which were chosen by their stylists and others they bought themselves for themselves (which are all conveniently “forgotten” by those who ship either big ML ship). Though we’ve seen that even with clothes given by their stylists they were still the ones to choose their own accessories, like Namjoon choosing a pair of glasses from a whole box of different ones, or the members choosing rings from two big boxes before going on stage.

Tae himself said, on multiple occasions across multiple years, that Jimin is his best friend, even his one and only best friend, and that he’s the one he likes most which he even proclaimed on national TV. As long as Tae doesn’t say that this has changed in the last, what, two weeks and suddenly JK is officially his new best friend, those who claim otherwise are basically nothing but shippers pushing a narrative that willfully ignores Tae’s own words. Just like they ignore and twist his Weverse comment about how T*ek*okers should get out of their imagination. What doesn’t fit is ignored or adjusted until it does fit.

Lastly, sure enough, Tae really was happy during that vlive but I’m fairly certain (though neither you, them or I will ever know for sure, we’re not in Tae’s head) it had absolutely no connection to T*ek*ok Day, something shippers created and not Tae and JK themselves, seeing as Tae has been in a very good and happy mood for a few months now. Whatever makes him so happy, I truly hope it’ll continue making him happy and I wish shippers (and solo stans) would stop trying to force a reason (which fits them) upon his emotions.

I know it’s easy to get confused by how loud shippers are online, especially as young ARMY (in this case both ARMY who are young age wise but also young in the sense of being new to the fandom), but shipper opinions, in many cases, are just noise, and also noise twisted and skewed a certain way to suit them. If you kept to OT7 spaces on the day of that vlive, no one really paid attention to the ring, most were annoyed by and furious at the shamelessness of the shippers in the comments, and tried to just focus on how fun the vlive was instead.

I’ve been thinking, as I always am, about the 90s and how we got here from there

And one thing I thought about was the figure we used to have of Your Granddad On The Internet - who would include you and all your brothers and sisters and parents on long e-mail FWD: chains about things that were transparently false on their face, frequently conservative-themed, frequently in ALL CAPS

Because apparently such a critical mass of people on the internet had that exact experience with their exact grandfather that it was a trope. Which brings up two points:

1) “People circulating viral conservative misinformation to their family and friends on the internet” is not a phenomenon of social media, it was there well before

2) Though these people were on the internet, ubiquitous on the internet even, they weren’t of the internet. Little or none of it was made for them and there was a hegemonic Internet Culture that recognized them as outside it.

So what was really going on? Well, let’s try to define the issue by subtraction.

It wasn’t just that he was a granddad - there were STEM professor wizards who’d been on USENET since the early ‘80s, or grey ponytail hippies from The WELL or whatever, and not only were they part of The True Internet, they were its founders.

It wasn’t just that he was out of it, on a tech or social level. Maybe your dad was wasting your inheritance chasing his brilliant day trading hunches, maybe your mom was going on Focus on the Family forums to complain about TV shows treating homosexuality as just another way to live. Probably they were both Eternal September AOLers who would ask you troubleshooting questions revealing an astounding ignorance of how computers work and somehow expect a useful answer that respected that absurd model.

But if they weren’t part of The True Internet they weren’t really rogues against it, at some level they got how you were supposed to interact with the internet - you found the site or community that corresponded to your interest and pursued it there. If anything their posts and e-mails too formally followed letter-writing structure, and they may have made dumb or tautological arguments in support of their points but they had the sense they were supposed to make arguments.

It wasn’t just that he was obnoxious - the notion of the “troll” dates to USENET at least, as someone who says things to get a rise out of people, or to bait them into wasting time rebutting something. To “own” them, basically. And annoying or not, this was accepted as part of what the Internet is, one of the signal features of its culture, really. But even when you weren’t sure if Your Granddad On The Internet actually believed something he sent you or just passed it on to signal what side he was on and how fiercely, he wasn’t trying to “own” you, he REALLY WAS on that side, he wanted you to associate him with that position, and ideally join him.

It was probably at least in part being retired and having spare time and no other social outlet, back in the day going online meant going to a specific piece of furniture in a specific room of your home when no one else was using the computer and spending maybe 3 minutes just getting online, it was something you blocked off time to do. The young generation could just come home from school to the cul-de-sac and get online for lack of anything else to do, the parents’ generation was too busy to have enough uninterrupted time to become Extremely Online?

The thing I’m really wondering about is class. What was the cost of being Online back then? Say a new computer and modem every 4 years at around $2400 (Grandpa sure wasn’t building his own, but then he didn’t have to keep upgrading video cards either), $40 for an ISP, ideally $10 for another phone line? That’s $100/month, or alternately $50/mo and the ability to make $2.5k purchases on demand. And the kind of senior citizen who, in 1998, lived separately from his children, could swing this, would think to swing this, has multiple agemate peers and children’s households who did swing this, was a particular group. “Middle-middle” class AT LEAST and probably higher, probably went to college back when only 10% of people did.

BUT that doesn’t make sense. My theory is that this used to be a more marginal behavior on the internet, but if it’s gotten more common since the late ‘90s I don’t think it’s because the Internet has grown more full of wealthy old patriarchs since.

So instead how about this theory: the internet in general was pretty wealth-marked in 1998 (far more than we realized, with our American mythology of universal white suburban middle-classness and “global village” Internet mythology) BUT, of people who were more wealthy in 1998, the most likely to NOT have internalized upper-class practices were the grandfathers from the “Silent” or “Greatest” generations before the postwar “mass middle class”. Our parents were beavery professionals who settled into the suburban cocoon, we knew we were destined for glory (or at least selective colleges) from birth, but THEY were socialized into some pool hall, street gang, farmhand, enlisted man kinda culture where boldness of assertion counted more than patient derivation from shared principles.

And if the Anglophone internet is ::gestures:: like this now maybe it’s cause it’s less of a professional-class preserve? The dividing line maybe being smartphones where “people on the internet” went from “people who specifically spend $X/mo on it as luxury” to “people with telephone service”? That’s a real possibility, that for all the “Global Village” stuff the wondrous effect of the ‘90s internet was to create a cultural space that was MORE gatekept by wealth and education.

If all rumored relationships were true, then Rose Quartz’s frontman Jett Blackwell would be a polygamist. Within only the past two weeks, he’s apparently been in a relationship with Georgia Lane, Beckley Byers, and a ‘mysterious hand’ (no, not his own). Those rumors enough are carrying his entire band. To elaborate, some have been speculating that Jett and Georgia are getting back together after Wayfinder (last week’s news!), even going as far as to say that the mysterious hand is Georgia’s. They all want to know if there’ll be any confirmation on Georgia’s upcoming album… but this isn’t promotion for her. On the other side of the spectrum, people are churning rumors that perhaps Jett and Beckley are getting back together. The two have exchanged flirty tweets and have sent each other pictures no one else has seen (again, no, not that kind, although it would make this a lot more entertaining). Others think that hand belongs to a mystery woman. We personally think that’s just for aesthetic.

Seeing how Ethereal’s only been around for a little over a year, they might want to change their name to Ephemeral if they’re already having breakup rumors. It seems that Better Now is trending for every reason except their music. Where is Better Now 2? We see you two in the studio a lot but we don’t see any singles being released. Maybe the two are too preoccupied now in their new relationships, #gezra and #kori, to continue with their careers? After all, Ezra has been spotted all over town with his new girl, Gemma Clarke, that there is no time for him to be writing music. I’d say at least we have frontwoman, Sweets Mori, but she’s busy off “not dating” Afterparty’s own, Christian Kelley, that we’ve hardly ever seen the two bandmates together anymore. You’d think we’d be focusing on Gemma Clarke’s upcoming album, right? Wrong. The focus of the week, or weeks, has been Gemma Clarke’s relationship status. (Where’s Alison Bechdel when you need her?) It seems she and Better Now drummer Ezra Grey have been getting to know each other pretty well, and by pretty well, we mean not even subtly hinting that they’re a couple in public. Anyone who thinks speculation is worth it is sorely mistaken. Anyone who thinks ‘confirmation’ is needed is very similar to Jared (can’t read, possibly 19). Sure, the Snapchat story wasn’t even close to a giveaway, just Gemma banging it out to BN. However, when you’re practically practicing PDA in front of a bunch of photographers and posting photos of yourself with that same person everywhere, if you’re not a couple, things just get weird. Anyway, she has an album coming out.

Yes, we’re talking about when a drunk fan took it upon themselves to do a meet and greet of their own in the form of pulling our pop princess off the stage and into the crowd, resulting in Carisi having to go to the emergency room for checkups. Guys, we know some times people do things they regret when they’re drunk, but don’t pull people off stage! Especially if you’re not even cute, do you see the type of guys Bella gets? She doesn’t want your Coors beer drinking ass. Okay, that’s enough from us about the situation, but just know that we’re #TeamJacob all the way and we hope that Carisi regains her crown as #1 soon.

A/N: I promised this a while ago, but this fic somehow got away from me and turned into something very different from my original plans (and had to be split into two parts). I hope you enjoy it anyway.

You changed your relationship status to: "Single."

JJK posted a status: "Still lovely, sparkling, and attractive even after all this time."

You rolled your eyes. Typical Jungkook and his cryptic updates on his secret SNS. Your phone buzzed again and when you read the comment from his fellow member, Seokjin, you burst out laughing.

Seokjinnie commented on JJK's status: "You meant me, right?"

Almost instantly, Jungkook replied.

JJK commented on JJK's status: "No hyung... after all this time, you're just old."

Snorting, you finished brushing your hair, keeping it loose instead of its usual ponytail for a change, and headed down for breakfast. Your older roommates, Saren and Mayu, were already at the table; Saren setting the dishes on the table, and Mayu reading the news on her phone while drinking lemon water. When the former saw you, her animated giggling brought out that elusive dimple on her cheek.

"Guess who liked your status, sweetie?" Saren singsonged as you sat at your usual place on the square table, adjacent to both of them.

Shrugging in what you hoped was a nonchalant way, you reached for the teapot. "287 people."

Saren lightly slapped your hand away. "It hasn't steeped yet." She sat down, steepling her fingers under her chin as she peered at you. "287 people. Including one Jeon Jungkook."

"Ooh..." Setting her phone aside, Mayu raised a teasing brow at you. "The fated ex-boyfriend from the goukon."

You pouted at her. "You don't believe in fate."

"I don't. But Saren does. And I think you do too, being the closet sap that you are." She smirked.

At a loss for a good retort, you turned your attention to the food: bacon and eggs, but there's also green salad, and a single bowl of rice. "Is that the leftover rice from last night?"

"Yeah, I didn't cook new rice for today," Saren admitted, fluttering her lashes. "Won't the guys have a concert here soon? I need to diet so Jinnie will fall in love with me! So that means... you're the only one who'll be eating rice in this house."

"You don't need to diet to make anyone fall in love with you," Mayu affirmed. "But if you're determined to lose weight, not eating rice works for me."

You looked at Saren askance, but said anyway: "Do well." At that moment, your phone buzzed with one new message.

JJK: "Hey, our group will be in Tokyo tomorrow, how about we do lunch? My treat. :)" Y/N: "Tomorrow isn't a good time." JJK: "It's just lunch, Y/N, it's not a big deal. ;)"

When you looked up from your phone, both Saren and Mayu were watching you; Saren clasping her hands and tittering, and Mayu smirking. "Is it Jungkook? It's him, right?" Saren chirped.

"What did he want?" Mayu asked.

Serving yourself bacon and eggs, you kept your eyes on your plate to avoid their inquisitive stares. "He said they'll be in Tokyo tomorrow and said we should have lunch."

Saren's squeal had you covering your ears, sure that you had ruptured them. Mayu didn't even wince, used to her best friend's high-pitched voice by now. Recovering from her fit of excitement, Saren stopped bouncing in her seat and picked up the teapot, serving you and herself tea with demure motions. "Aaaaand, what did you say?"

You swirled the tea in the cup, watching avoiding their stares again. "I said tomorrow was a bad time."

"Noooo!" Saren wailed, grabbing your shoulders. "How will you reconcile if you don't meet? And how will Jinnie and I fall in love if we don't meet through you?"

"You fell in love a long time ago, it's Seokjin that's the problem," you retorted, none-too-tactfully.

Mayu tried to give you a stern look but ended up chuckling. "Have some pity on our dear sempai."

"Aren't things going well with you and Yoongi? It would make more sense for you to help out Saren with this one, since you're her best friend and actually dating Seokjin's fellow member and roommate." you pointed out.

"Yoongi and I have made a pact to stay out of this matter," she explained. "We're both too bullheaded and it would be a mess if we got involved."

You hemmed and hawed noncommittally in response, sure that the real reason for that pact was because Yoongi didn't want to push his roommate to a woman he wasn't interested in and Mayu didn't want to disappoint her best friend with her being unable to help in the matter. "Anyway, it's not like they actually have time for that lunch, they'd just be sneaking out before the concert and won't be proper company."

Saren grumbled and dumped half of the leftover rice in her plate. Both you and Mayu reproached her with narrowed eyes. "What happened to your diet?" you asked, prying the bowl off her hands before she could decide to eat the rest of your rice.

"Well, Jinnie will be arriving tomorrow, so it's not like dieting now would make a difference, won't it?" She smashed an egg into the rice and munched on two strips of bacon at once.

(Nine months after the breakup)

Jeon Jungkook, AKA your idol ex-boyfriend, was the very last person you expected to see at the goukon. The second-to-the-last people that you expected to see were his eldest group members, Seokjin and Yoongi. And yet all three of them were sitting there with their junior manager, Dongwook, who greeted Saren as she dragged you and Mayu into the private room of the bar. When all the participants were seated on the long table, introductions began with Dongwook gesturing at Saren, saying: "Teacher, please go ahead."

"Hello, I'm Sakurazura Saren. I'm an academy lecturer. When it comes to dating, I hope to find a 21st century prince." She bowed her head once, eyes darting towards Seokjin, and blushed. Everyone clapped politely, while a few of the women sighed at that idealism. Flustered, she nudged Mayu a little too hard, earning a glare.

Mayu addressed the room with a breezy confidence you couldn't help but envy. "Ishii Mayu, NGO worker and currently studying for the bar exam. My rules for dating are very simple--no artists, actors, or musicians--but I'm always on the lookout for worthy exceptions." There was a snicker and she raised an eyebrow at the offending party, but Yoongi blinked at her in a show of innocence, and somehow managed to lead the clapping and raise his sake cup at the same time. Mayu then nodded at you to go next.

"Well, I'm, uh... Y/N. I'm not looking for anything in particular right now..." you murmured, and the room erupted in discontent grumbling at your insipid proclamation, so you forced yourself to perk up and exclaim: "Surprise me! I just want to experience something new." Everyone clapped at that addendum and you almost rolled your eyes at the pretense of it all.

After the rest of the women finished with the introductions, it was the men's turn. Without being prompted, Seokjin began: "I'm Kim Seokjin whose handsomeness goes viral." Girlish squeals of delighted agreement rang in the room, including one from Saren. "My ideal girl is someone cute with puppy-like charms and definite wife material whose specialty is cooking." At those words, Saren and Mayu exchanged meaningful looks; the latter giving the former an assuring pat on the arm. "Next!" He patted Yoongi's shoulder.

"My name's Min Yoongi and if I were to describe myself, the most appropriate term is 'musical genius...'" he drawled, his gaze sweeping across the women's side of the table, who all held their collective breaths, to finally rest upon Mayu. "I guess you could say when it comes to dating, I'm exceptional enough to break your rules for." She raised her eyebrow at him again, in challenge this time.

"Jungkook." Your ex-boyfriend declared, angling his chin and smirking, succeeding in taking away the breath of every woman in the room. "I'm not looking for anything at all. Because I know my fated one will find me." You didn't think that was much different from the first part of your introduction, but for some reason, his declaration was met with more enthusiasm.

To decide the couples, two sets of numbered lots were laid on the table, one for the men and another for the women. "Shouldn't we start with number one?" Mayu waved her lot.

"Here." Yoongi raised a hand.

"But..." Seokjin glanced down at his own lot and frowned. Wordlessly, Yoongi snatched Seokjin's lot and tossed it along with his own at the floating candles centerpiece, where they both caught in flames. When he stood up and offered a hand to Mayu, she took it with an amused smirk.

The pairings continued until Saren held up her lot with both hands. "Number four."

Yoongi nudged Seokjin who only gawked at him, but when he gestured at the burnt lots on the centerpiece, Seokjin said: "I guess that's my number." Saren looked like she was one held breath away from swooning as Seokjin sat next to her. He inclined his head at her, but she had barely bowed back when he turned back to the table to watch the rest of the pairs.

As luck would have it, both you and Jungkook were lucky number eight. Grinning at you, he patted the seat beside him. You made no move to stand however, so he himself rose and pulled over a chair to sit next you. "Of all the goukons, in all of the districts, in all of Tokyo, you walk into--"

"It's not that weird a coincidence," you cut in. "Saren works at an academy and your manager Dongwook is one of her students, and he organized a goukon so she invited her roommates and he invited his charges. Hardly fate."

"It's still quite the coincidence. You moved to the largest city in the world to start your degree anew, and you just so happened to move into the same apartment as Saren, who just so happened to be teaching our manager, who just so happened to drag me to this goukon." he insisted. "I didn't even want to come, you know?"

"I didn't want to come either! Saren just wouldn't take no for an answer. Also, you should've protested to us getting paired up, considering that we're..." you glanced around to make sure that nobody was listening and dropped your voice into a whisper. "... Exes."

"Nah." He shrugged. "Jin and Yoongi know about you now."

"They do?" You gaped at him. Jungkook had been incredibly paranoid about keeping your relationship a secret while you had been dating.

"Yes. And I don't want to ruin the mood..." he glanced over his shoulder at the now opened sliding doors of the room, and at the bar where Yoongi and Mayu were standing. The way he leaned over her and her inviting pose against the counter emanated attraction and flirtation.

You grumbled under your breath, sure that Mayu would kill you if you interrupted that.

"But if you'd rather be paired with Jin instead, be my guest." The two of you then looked at Seokjin, who seemed a bit discomfited by Saren's blushes and the way she dealt with it--by continually pouring him drinks and feeding him snacks. "I don't think he'd mind."

"Nevermind." you mumbled. Saren's starry-eyed awkwardness might be overwhelming for Seokjin right now, but you knew just how sincere she was once she has decided to bestow her affections. Despite her awkwardness, you hoped he would be able to see that.

"Good. Because among everyone here, you're the one I want to spend time with." Jungkook winked at you.

You rolled your eyes and looked away.

"Still lovely, sparkling, and attractive even after all this time..." he murmured. As he observed the mounting flush on your cheeks, he smirked and cocked his head towards wide glass windows and the luminous view of the tower. "Tokyo Tower, that is." You mentally scolded yourself for getting all excited for nothing. And yet Jungkook's smirk morphed into one of his shy, sweet smiles. "But I know a place with a better view..."

Right after the goukon, Saren, who was so dormant as to be dead online, very publicly changed her relationship status from nonexistent to "Single," in hopes that Seokjin would do the same, but he never did. He did, however, post several pictures of the fancy cocktails from the bar and a few shots with the women from the goukon, including Saren, much to her excitement. Jungkook posted some quote about the red string of destiny, and you had to take a small break to tell yourself not to think too much on it.

And yet you also received a message from Jungkook.

JJK: "Why Tokyo of all places?" JJK: "Rather than to forget, did you come to remember?" Y/N: "Don't get ahead of yourself." JJK: "I was just curious. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"

Despite your dismissal, Jungkook notified you that he would be over for brunch the next day with Yoongi and Seokjin. Dongwook would cover for them so they can sneak out right after landing, risking his job for 'true friendship between men.' Saren prepared a lavish spread of the occasion: there was the usual bacon and eggs and rice, but there was also karaage, bulgogi, strawberry cheesecake pancakes, two fancy variants of tamagoyaki, fresh fruit platter, and the real overkill--baked stuffed lobster.

"Isn't this too extravagant?" you asked teasingly, though you were also voicing a very real concern. "I've never seen you shower this much attention--or any attention, really--on any other man."

"It's because it's Kim Seokjin," Saren explained. "I've never met anyone who was my ideal, but now that I did, I want to pursue him wholeheartedly."

"Well, I'm glad you're trying your best." Despite Mayu's words, you could detect a hint of strain in her supportive declaration. "No matter what the result, you won't have any regrets, right?"

"Right!" Saren nodded, her dimpled smile so winning that you couldn't imagine how a man could resist when faced with that.

But of course when the guys arrived, her face stiffened into a nervous, wide-eyed grin as all of you sat around the dining table. "I hope the food is to your liking," she asked, too anxious to eat.

"It's good, thank you," Yoongi said.

"You're an amazing cook." Jungkook assured her. "And this lobster, Seokjin really likes this. Right?"

"Right!" Seokjin agreed. "You're fit to be married." To your ears, it was an offhand compliment with Seokjin's trademark flirtatiousness, yet Saren beamed like the moon emerging from the clouds, obviously taking it to heart. Too bad he was too busy with the food to appreciate the view.

Jungkook grabbed a big clump of bulgogi with his chopsticks and topped his rice with it. "In fact, you should give him the recipe to your bulgogi, yours is much better."

"Hey!" Seokjin protested through a mouthful of lobster.

You quirked a corner of your lip at Jungkook gratefully and pushed the platter of fluffy tamagoyaki towards him. Keeping his eyes locked on yours, he served himself three pieces. "You remembered that I prefer fluffy tamagoyaki."

Shrugging, you grabbed more chocolate chip pancakes--more to occupy yourself than out of hunger. "That's not strange. I'm not a forgetful person."

"I can't help but be glad," he said. "It makes me think that you might remember other things as well. Promises made. That place."

You were at a loss at how to respond--it was still rather surreal for you that you could hang out with Jungkook and the older members as his ex-girlfriend, or that Jungkook was pulling these moves that could almost be considered as making the moves. Fortunately, Seokjin's phone blared and he put on speaker a panicked Dongwook who begged the three of them to hurry to the concert venue and save his neck. Saren insisted on packing bentos, so Yoongi and Mayu took the opportunity to slip away for some private time. Saren caught Seokjin before he could step out the front door and handed him a bento which was met with polite thanks. She gave one to Jungkook as well before scurrying with the third bento to Mayu's room.

You saw Seokjin hand off his bento to Jungkook, however. "There'll be food at the venue too," he said by way of explanation and headed outside to start his rented car.

Jungkook noticed you staring and approached you. "I'm sorry we have to rush off like this."

"I'm used to it," you said, matter-of-factly.

Yet Jungkook flinched as if you had slapped him.

(Three months before the breakup)

"Are you sure this is okay?" you asked, gazing up at him in worry as you led him through the tree-lined walkway across the park, walking towards the illuminated Tokyo Tower in the horizon.

"You should've thought about that before asking your idol boyfriend to sneak out the night before a big concert," Jungkook snorted. When you pouted at those words, he enveloped you in his arms, both of you slowing to a shuffle. "It's fine, Y/N. Besides, the older members always said that secret dating is part of the idol experience."

“There are certain topics that are high-performing within a breadth of articles. One key element of us growing was that we had a high authority domain, but we had no content. A key element was just nailing the publishing element and the keyword research, publishing and everything related,” said Ballarini.

“On day one beyond traffic, we didn’t know what was converting. We didn’t know what was actually driving customers. We pretty much had to carpet bomb a bunch of topics hoping that this was going to work. Slowly, we were getting content to rank, drive traffic and drive customers. [Then] we were refining topics and writing more about topics that were performing. I guess we kind of iterated this process at scale. Now we have 10+ people that are working on editing and publishing content. We have SEOs that look after these operations,” said Ballarini.

Why does TransferWise devote so much effort to organic search?

“Organic search is not necessarily the channel that can give you very fast and immediate results. But, at that time we understood that it was important, so we decided to invest for the long-run. Even when it comes to content, we are very focused on the long-term. Every investment that we do, we judge performance and payback on a 12 to 24-month basis, and then we iterate against those financial constraints. You need to have conviction around doing this for a good amount of time before you actually see results. The first 12 to 14 months of producing all that content, it wasn’t looking as rosy as it is now,” said Ballarini.

How did you persuade your company leadership to apply so many resources to organic search and content over such a long timeframe with few upfront results to justify the expenditure?

Ballarini advised that all the departments at TransferWise operate independently, so no justification between subordinates and superiors was required. That said, the company has financial constraints and thought was applied to not burning through money for the sake of doing so.

It wasn’t as though there were no upfront results. It was more like the first six months of results were looked at with a casual eye, and then they wrote subsequent articles using the well-performing aspects of the first batch. At this point, analysis of historic content has given them enough insight to expect x-growth based on article-type-x.

What characteristics do your most successful articles have? Are there commonalities in article length and keyword choice? How do you decide which topics to cover?

“At some point after starting and testing various topics, you get to some confidence around various topics and the impact of those keywords. That was one way that we used to prioritize.

You correctly mentioned we published last year, I think 1,300 articles in 5-6 languages. Obviously, the more we scale globally the more we can leverage insights from the English-speaking market. That is relatively easy.

When it comes to keyword research and topic research … most of our content team … [has a] background … [from] our customer support teams. They know the product quite well. Equally, we tend to work with teams to figure out use-cases that our customers [seek] …

To answer your question regarding the length, we don’t have very strict rules in that sense. Obviously, all our content is long-form-ish written content. We write a lot of guides to educate people on various financial decisions that they need to make. We let the editors and writers decide based on the topic and then [they use a] leveraging tool like SEMrush to expand on related keywords and expand on topics in a way that we find the best tool for that given series of articles.

We probably look at length and type of content by topics and series rather than saying everywhere on the blog needs to be 1,000 words or 2,000 words. That doesn’t necessarily make sense. We have series of content that perform really well with not too much content. There are other topics where we need to write exhaustive guides on “how-to-do.” Especially if you’re filing taxes abroad, you eventually want to get it right. [In those cases], we need to get someone who is an expert on the subject matter and get them to write really exhaustive content in that sense,” said Ballarini.

Seven iron-clad methods to drive traffic to your website

You’ve written and published an awesome blog post, and now you’re waiting for that website traffic to start pouring in?

Well, I hope you’re comfortable because it’s going to be quite a wait.

While the benefits of content marketing are well-known, they are well-known to everyone. Blog posts, case studies, and white papers are published left and right (four million pieces each and every day, actually) so getting through the clutter can be difficult.

How do you get noticed in such an oversaturated environment? You master these two important skills:

Writing educational, engaging, and timely content, and

By working hard on driving traffic to your website.

I’ll assume that you know how to write engaging content (if you don’t, this article could help you) and focus here on seven methods of driving traffic to your website.

Some are conventional (like social media and email) but it’s the unconventional ones that I hope you will put to good use. Ultimately, it’s a mix of both that will help you generate a steady stream of website traffic, and I hope that you’ll find some of the ideas here inspirational enough to try them out.

Conventional methods to drive website traffic

1. Organic Traffic (SEO)

Organic search engine traffic is the Holy Grail of website traffic.

Most authority sites in your niche get the bulk of their visits from organic Google searches but this is an important traffic channel for every type of website (see screenshot below – 12% traffic from organic is nothing to be scoffed at for an ecommerce store).

Here are a couple of evergreen tips for you to keep in mind when writing content and doing SEO for your website:

Keyword research – Spend some time learning how people search for content in your niche. Identify keywords that you have a chance to rank for (long-tail keywords with low competition, for example), and write content around them.

On-page and technical SEO – Work on your headings, keyword density, meta descriptions, load times, and similar. Most importantly, make your content engaging, informative, and fun to read. For more on on-page SEO, check out this guide that we published recently.

Backlinks – Backlinks are the votes that other websites cast that tell Google that your content is worthy of that top spot in the search engine results pages (SERPs). They can occur naturally but you don’t want to depend on it – make sure you have a couple of backlinking strategies up your sleeve whenever you publish a really good piece of content.

2. Promotion on social media platforms

Social media is dominating the web, and if you’re not there promoting your content and your website, you’re missing out on a very important source of website traffic.

Depending on your niche, you’ll want to consider (at least) making an appearance on the following social media platforms:

Facebook – Set up your Facebook business page as soon as possible, and start working on growing your base of followers. Regularly publish your content here but make sure to cross-post to other relevant groups and pages on Facebook. Instagram – To interest your Instagram audience, you will need to become a visual storyteller (think infographics and beautifully designed images). Since Instagram doesn’t allow links, get creative and use your bio section, Instagram Stories, and IGTV video descriptions to drive traffic to your website (for more details, read this Instagram traffic generation guide from Tailwind).

Twitter – This is a very cluttered and noisy social platform but it’s still great for sharing bite-sized pieces of your content. Use a post scheduler like Buffer, TweetDeck, Hootsuite or others to get several tweets out automatically during the day. On Twitter, it pays to be provocative, funny, and on time (think about hijacking trending topics and hashtags) if you want people to click on the links you share.

When using social media to drive website traffic, the most important thing is to make sure that you’re on all of the platforms where your target audience(s) tend to hang out.

3. Email marketing

Marketing your content and your offers to a curated list of people who have already expressed an interest in what you have to say is a no-brainer, right?

To drive traffic to your website using your email list, consider the following:

Send out a newsletter regularly, highlighting your recently published blog posts, unique tips and tricks, or special offers.

Segment your list and send special reminders to different subsections when you publish something that might be of particular interest to that group.

Add social media buttons to your email blasts so that your subscribers are reminded to follow you on your preferred networks. Encourage them to share your newsletters with friends either via social networks or by forwarding the emails.

4. Slack communities

Slack is a tool that teams use to communicate but it’s also home to Slack Communities where like-minded people hang out. Even if a group has only 1000 members, a lot of them will be active at any given time, which means that your potential audience will have a chance to see and interact with your link in real-time.

How to do it

First, find Slack communities that fit your niche.

Note that you will quickly get a feeling whether or not Slack is the right traffic channel for you – communities mostly revolve around marketing, tech, business, SEO, and similar digital topics (check out this list of great SEO Slack communities from Ahrefs).

Don’t get discouraged if you’re not in marketing: photography, writing, design, web dev, community management – if you publish content in any of these niches, you’re golden.

When you find a community that interests you, send a request to join.

Here’s some advice on how to use Slack to drive traffic to your website (without getting booted out of a community on day one):

Introduce yourself and let people know what it is that you do, and what you expect from joining the community.

Don’t just spam your links everywhere – answer questions in full, and only add a link to your content if it adds context and details to your answer.

If a question has a weird angle (not exactly something you talk about in your content) but it’s related to a piece of content you’ve written, consider updating the post and then answering the question and adding your link.

Slack communities are searchable. If your comments are particularly valuable, you can expect other users to share them with newcomers from time to time. Because of this, even older comments can yield a small trickle of website traffic from time to time.

5. Blog and forum comments

Blog comments may not be a very reliable SEO link building technique, but they still work for traffic generation.

How to do it

First, look for blog posts related to your content. Pull up recent articles by clicking on the “tools” box on the search result page.

Copy the URL of interesting posts to a spreadsheet (do the same with interesting forum topics). Keeping these links in one place helps you build a database of sites in your niche for future reference.

The key is to make thoughtful comments and only link to your content when it’s actually relevant. Try to add real value to the blog post with every comment that you make.

Each blog comment may only drive a few visitors to your site. But, if the post goes viral or sits on Google’s page one for a long time, that’s enough to get a steady stream of visitors to your website every month.

6. Appear as a guest on popular podcasts

Podcasts are huge – around 51% of the US population has listened to one or more in the last few months. Somewhere around 35% of them listen to the entire episode once they start it.

This means that podcasts are a great opportunity for savvy marketers.

And, what’s best, you don’t even have to record one, you can simply pitch your ideas to hosts of existing podcasts to try to secure an invite to a future episode.

How to do it

Do a quick Google search – just type in “top [your niche] podcasts” and go through the list while recording URLs (and requirements to guest star) in a spreadsheet.

Craft an interesting (and personalized) pitch, and send it to the host, outlining why you should be invited to star in one of their future episodes.

When appearing, be informative, interesting, and educational. But, above all else, be shameless when promoting your content and your website. Answer questions thoroughly but don’t be shy about adding “By the way, you can read all of this on my blog, which you can access if you visit [your website]”.

Ensure that the episode description mentions your name clearly, as well as links to your website and some of the more interesting pieces that can be found there.

7. Use QR Codes to drive traffic to your website

QR codes (or quick response codes) are another great, but a severely underutilized way to drive traffic to your website.

By placing a QR code on business cards, flyers, and posters (and even your Facebook and LinkedIn pages), you give people a quick way to access your website. All they have to do is scan it and their phone will open up any URL associated with the code.

How to do it

Use a free QR code generator to create a unique code that people can scan. Add a general code that leads to your website to your Facebook and LinkedIn profiles.

If you’re visiting a conference or a meet-up, consider adding content-specific codes (meaning, the ones that link to a piece of content on a specific topic) so that people scanning them land on something that will feel a bit more personalized and tailored to them.

Closing note

Driving traffic to your website is an 80/20 game – 80% of your traffic comes from 20% of your actions. Once you have enough data to determine where that 80% of traffic is coming from, it will be easy to ramp up your efforts in that area. But, to get there you will have to experiment with both conventional and unconventional methods of driving website traffic.
