"The Clouds: A Timeless Satirical Masterpiece"
Aristophanes, through his timeless play "The Clouds," brings forth a riveting blend of humor, wit, and social commentary that transcends the boundaries of time and culture. William James Hickie's translation beautifully captures the essence of Aristophanes' original Greek comedy, allowing readers to revel in the satire and thought-provoking insights that remain relevant to this day.
"The Clouds" is a bold and imaginative critique of the intellectual and moral climate of ancient Athens, presented through the lens of the eccentric Socrates and the establishment of the "Thinkery." As readers embark on this comedic journey, they are treated to a sharp exploration of the conflict between tradition and innovation, philosophy and practicality.
The play unfolds with Strepsiades, a debt-ridden farmer seeking refuge from his financial woes, enrolling in the Thinkery to acquire the skill of persuasive argumentation. Here, Socrates, brilliantly portrayed as an airy intellectual consumed by abstract ideas, takes center stage. The ensuing dialogue between Strepsiades and Socrates is a testament to Aristophanes' genius in blending humor with intellectual depth.
Hickie's translation preserves the linguistic nuances and comedic elements, allowing readers to appreciate the clever wordplay, puns, and innuendos that make Aristophanes' work a literary treasure. The humor is sharp, and the satire biting, as Aristophanes fearlessly mocks the intellectual elite and challenges the societal norms of his time.
Beyond its comedic brilliance, "The Clouds" serves as a mirror reflecting the perennial tension between the pursuit of knowledge and the practicalities of daily life. Aristophanes raises thought-provoking questions about the responsibilities of intellectuals, the consequences of unchecked innovation, and the delicate balance between tradition and progress.
In the hands of Hickie, Aristophanes' wit shines through, making this translation an accessible and enjoyable experience for contemporary readers. The characters come to life with vividness, and the dialogues resonate with relevance, inviting readers to reflect on the timeless themes presented.
"The Clouds" is more than a mere comedy; it is a literary gem that challenges societal norms, questions authority, and invites introspection. Aristophanes' bold satire, combined with Hickie's adept translation, ensures that this play remains a captivating and enduring piece of literature that transcends the ages.
"The Clouds," of Aristophanes skillfully translated byWilliam James Hickie is available in Amazon in paperback 10.99$ and hardcover 18.99$ editions.

This Blessed Thing
This is a Very Long Post. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about identity. About how it may change as we age, as we emerge into our society, as we redefine ourselves, as we learn more about who we are or about who we were meant to be. This will be a very self-indulgent post, because it’s entirely about me. In this post I’m going to talk about my own sexual identity; if this isn’t your jam, that’s…

I think people would be more aware of the workings of autism/ADHD if They Might Be Giants had a catchy song about neurodivergence.

??? that was surprisingly down on yourself how come??? not a lot of experience drawing hyper?
Oh, no no no! That's not being down on myself! Here's my brain-thinkery:
I don't think my style lends itself well to it, which isn't a bad thing. Not everything looks good in every style.
I don't have a lot of experience with it, no. I'd actually have to practice to make something I'd be happy with.
People are often VERY PARTICULAR about things they find attractive, meaning it's potentially less about "Dan draw good", and more about "I have THESE SPECIFIC SPECIFICATIONS about what I want the results to be!"
Just number three again for emphasis, because seriously, people will have NOTES on that sort of thing. "Too big!" "Not big enough!" etc. The preferences can be fierce!
I both would and wouldn't want the shirt covering the results. I don't think the shirt should be successfully covering anything, or resized that much, in that situation, and I think it would look fake. HOWEVER, I ALSO don't want to draw and share an outcome in which the shirt isn't covering the results. So *I MYSELF* would have notes for myself that I would disagree with. Somehow.

a list of my favorite spy school funny moments/quotes
- “What the heck are powdered nutgalls?” Chip asked. “It’s what you get after riding a horse at high speed for an hour,” Mike grumbled, gingerly adjusting the seat of his pants.
- Jemma Emma Dilemma
- “Or Agent Kumquat,” Chip added, and then both of them cracked up.
- Alexander glared at him, still smarting from his insult. “See if I ever buy you campfire treats again.” he said, and then stormed out himself.
- “Not necessarily. I could like them as a friend.” “First of all, you don’t have friends.”
- “Parcheesi?! I loooove Parcheesi.”
- “I lost the arm and the leg, but not the eye.” “Oh, how’d you lose that?” “A bug flew into it.” “Uhh, you don’t lose your eye if a bug flies into it.” “You do if it’s your first day with a hook.😒”
- “Although believe it or not, Nefarious actually got off easy. According to his file, his folks named his little sister Placenta.”
- “If there’s one thing I know, it’s women.” Murray exclaimed.
- Now that he had transformed into Hot Murray,
- “How good is your vision?” Mike asked. “It’s off the charts,” Erica replied. “I eat a lot of carrots.”
- “Supposedly the guy was a big jerk, and the peasants all rose up against him and burned him alive, and now his ghost roams the property, looking for a… fire extinguisher or something like that.”
- He was at the base of an extremely tall elm tree, speaking into a radio microphone and seeming far more lucid than usual—although the moment he saw Chip and Jawa, he went right back into his doddering act. “Skip and Yaya!”
- “Dad, I’m going to need you to act like you have no idea what’s going on.” “What?” Alexander asked, confused. “I don’t understand.”
- “Wow! Our pool at spy school didn’t have water slides.” “Really? What did it have?” “Bacterial contamination.😕”
- “So, this girlfriend of Mike’s…is he super into her, or just kind of into her?” “He’s mentioned marriage. 🙂”
- “I think plenty!” The principal said defensively. “My mind is a constant whirlwind of thinkery!”
- “Erica!” Alexander gasped, mortified this had happened in front of so many people. “We do not spit on our grandfathers in this family!”
- Paul Lee leaned close to me and whispered, “Has he uh..uh…had some sort of, um, brain injury?” “No.” I replied. “This is how he was born, I think.”
- “Erica! You’re driving on the wrong side of the street!” “I’m not driving on the wrong side.🙄” Erica argued, gunning the engine. “They are!”
- Chip pegged him in the face with another pair of boxers. “Warren, stop playing with my underwear, you pervert.”
- “Now? Here?” “National security is at stake.” “It was at stake this morning when I was having waffles in the cafeteria. We couldn’t have discussed this then??”
- “All these men are itching for a fight. And since I’m the alpha male here, they’re going to come for me first!” Alexander said. “The alpha male.?🤨” Catherine asked, amused. “Yes! It won’t look good for them to attack women or children, so they’ll attack me first!” “And me.” Murray seconded nervously. “I’m definitely the beta male here!”
- “Neither does Jawa. Why aren’t you suspicious of him?” “Jawa’s a freak of nature. You’re just a freak.”
- “Hey! Where’s my breakfast?” The woman socked him in the face. Murray reeled backward. “Okay! No tip for you!” He said, then collapsed on the floor, unconscious.
- I quickly replaced the skull and wiped my hand on my shirt. “This is sooo not how I wanted to spend my first day in Paris.” OKAY DRAMA QUEEN?
- “West Virginia?” Claire Hutchins called from a few rows up. “I thought that was all strip mines and inbred hillbillies.” “You heard wrong.” Chip shot back. “As you can see, there’s plenty of wilderness here. And the locals are far less inbred than the royal family.”
- “Do you not care one wit for your country?” “No! I care many wits for my country!”
- “What have you done?!” He screamed at us. “What have you done?!” “Well, it’s obvious,” I said. “We’ve blown up a rebel minivan.”
- Murray sighed. “I know you’ve got issues with Ben because he turned you into half the man you used to be.” (About Joshua)
- “Talk about being heavily armed.” Mike said. (Also about Joshua)

I can only speak for myself but socializing as an autistic person became so much easier when I realized that most people often want to stay light and superficial in terms of the content in day to day conversation, and I would default to get deep in My Thinkery™️ in order to deeply connect and share thoughts and perspectives with someone
and something like the significant consideration and thought I do all the time, can be percieved as almost a type of emotional/mental labor that is only proper to exert for certain people who are already pretty emotionally close or familiar with one another, and if this is an everyday person, that urge to go deep in conversation with anyone and everyone made some people uneasy because we don't "know each other like that"
And some people don't care to "know people like that" and would rather stay acquaintances with someone over being deep genuine friends for whatever reason, and this is a reflection of them their motivations, and not being able to make friends because you are being perceived as overly familiar with a day to day person doesn't mean you've done anything wrong, deep and meaningful connection is food for the soul, and some people just don't have an appetite

Pretty obvious in hindsight that a society of sapient beings who make other sapient beings and have to care for them would go on to make creationist deities with paternalistic mores and rules concerning What Is Good For Them.
#personal#ppl tend to downplay philosophy and thinking in general as a symptom of 'a lack of chores' at least where I live#could not be me - most of my arguably pretentious Thinkery (tm) happens while cleaning our place
