“But I’m not going to eat it all myself, it would be a waste of resources!” 

Knuckles’s eye twitched. “So help me, kit... if you don’t just eat the goddamn granola bar-” 

“Watch how you fucking talk to him,” Sonic said from across the room. He sat on top of a crate, heel tapping aggravatingly fast as he tried to wait out their captivity. He’d been fidgeting and moody ever since hour two– but now that it was approaching night time, his old short-temperedness was starting to resurface. ...Case in point. 

"Talk to him how?"

Tails swiveled his head between Sonic and Knuckles.

"You know." Sonic fidgeted, avoiding eye-contact and staring up at the ceiling, like it pained him to say the next word. "...Language."

“Since when do you care?” Knuckles said – bewildered. 

Sonic huffed and laid his head back against the crate. 

Knuckles shook it off. “Like I said. We already decided. It's the only food, but you’re the youngest. You need it so you don’t grow up malnourished or whatever. So just eat the fucking bar, kid, stop arguing.” 

“Watch it,” Sonic snapped again. 

Tails’s ears went back, looking between Knuckles and Sonic, across the room. He started to fiddle with his tails, anxiety building the more his two older friends argued.  “I just think it’d be the most efficient if we split it in thirds – even by size! Knuckles, you’re the biggest, so-”

“We already decided we’re not fucking eating it, Tails,” Knuckles said. “It’s all yours. Go wild. Just stop fighting us on it, it's fucking annoying. You don't need to turn it into a whole goddamn thing.” 

Sonic, though, blinked one eye open, looking surprisingly irritated. Not just because he didn’t have much room to run, either. “Don’t cuss at Tails.”

“All I said was it’s his shit to eat, not mine, and that he can stop fucking arguing-” 

In an instant, Sonic had gotten up and crossed the room, now inches from Knuckles. Posture tense and annoyed. Tails intentionally grabbed his big brother's wrist and nudged Sonic back. If there was one thing (and one thing alone) that could de-escalate a fight, it was Tails hovering too close to whatever Sonic was annoyed at. 

He could still be annoyed at Tails – and he definitely was right now – but he wouldn’t risk hurting him. 

Knuckles, knowing this, shoved at Sonic anyways. “You cuss in front of him all the fucking time, you sanctimonious blue asshole. What’s your problem?” 

“You’re swearing at my baby brother and you think I’m not gonna react?” 

“...And?” 

“At. My. Baby. Brother. There’s a fucking difference and you know it.”

“Wh- you ungrateful little shit, I’m taking your side and agreeing he should have the only goddamn food we have-”

“You didn’t need to tell him it was all there was!” 

“What, like I’m supposed to pretend we’re just drowning in supplies? I’m not delusional and I don’t think he’s stupid enough to believe it even if we tried.” 

“You’re still supposed to try, you asshole!” Sonic shoved forward. “Stop being a dick to Tails, it’s not his fault we’re in this mess-”

“I’m blaming you actually, dumbass. He doesn’t need a knight in shining armor, no one’s fucking mad at him. What he needs is a decent fucking dinner. Congrats on that, by the way. Guardian of the year.” 

Sonic’s face went from irritated to absolutely pissed. 

Tails, at this point, stepped directly between the two, trying to make a placating gesture. “I really think we should just split the granola bar-” 

In unison, Sonic and Knuckles snapped, “We’re not splitting the fucking bar!”
