I will never forgive social media for its glorification of mental illness. Pop psychology runs rampant on these platforms, and so many people are claiming labels that would've had you lobotomized 60 years ago, all for the sake of feeling special. You're not "soooooo OCD"—you just like keeping your desk organized. You don’t have BPD—you’re 15 and going through your first breakup. You’re not clinically depressed—you’re sad.
By adopting these labels without fully understanding what they mean, you're further stigmatizing actual mental illnesses, making them seem alien, disturbing, and wrong.
Yes, I get that talking about mental health on social media can help some people recognize issues they need help with (and I'm not saying we should stop talking about mental health all together). But when the baseline for something like bipolar disorder becomes "sometimes I’m sad and other times I’m happy," how do you think it affects people who genuinely suffer from this debilitating condition?
Claiming you’re bipolar because, like any other human being, you experience emotions actively contributes to labeling those who truly have the disorder as “crazy.” I’m so beyond tired of this.
