OMG Cole died?!????????!!! See this is why I hated that show, they drew me in with the concept of seeing different POVs but when they killed off two of thosePOVs & centered on Noah they lost me
I’ve been saving this until I got on my laptop, but then kept forgetting so I’m gonna rant using my phone.
So with S5, two storylines took place, one in the present day - or at least a little bit into the future, which focused on Noah and Helen. Then the second storyline is set decades into the future and focused on an adult Joanie Lockhart and Cole is dead in this storyline.
Now here is for the ranty bit. This season just further shits on Cole, Alison, Cole and Alison AND Ruth Wilson!
First of all, Joanie Lockhart is just an unlikable character, her personality seems to be defined by the fact that Alison “killed herself” when she was a kid. She barely shows any emotion about her dad. And her storyline is about her trying to find the truth about Alison.
She is the one who learns the truth about Alison’s death and confronts Ben, who threatens her and scares her and makes the police believe that she’s a mental patient of his.
Then they shit on Cole/Alison’s relationship and Cole himself. When Joanie tells Noah that Alison was murdered, Noah is all Cole was right he always thought she was murdered because he’d never leave Joanie. And Joanie tells Noah that Cole told her that Alison killed herself, that he tried to save her but he couldn’t and that they are better off without her.
Fuck that made me mad. Cole should have learnt the truth and would not give up believing that she didn’t kill herself.
Oh and to top it all off, the show ends with Ben getting away with killing Alison. No Justice is served. And fuck Sarah Treeme, the EPs — they said the reason that Alison didn’t get justice for being killed was because it “wasn’t their story to tell.” Fuck that. This whole show is your story, at no point is it not their story, they introduced and made the decision that she would get murdered. It was THEIR story. And I don’t care what anyone says but the only reason Alison never got justice was because it was a big Fuck You to Ruth Wilson.
Now, let’s move onto the Helen and Noah stuff. Fuck. I’ve been saying for years that this has become the Noah show, that the EPs have had a massive hard on for Dominic West and Noah Solloway since S2, it was cemented by S3 when that French LI got a POV — Autymn has heard me say this for years. And this season was clearly all about Noah once again, but this time trying to redeem Noah and make him worthy of a happy ending.
But it fails. He still gets a happy ending. One he doesn’t deserve. Noah is still unlikable throughout the season and only gets a little bit likeable in the last few episodes but it feels so forced. He’s still an asshole in S5 and nothing can erase the past 4 seasons of assholery.
And the ending is BS, making Helen and Noah endgame. They are a toxic ship, bringing out the worse in each other. Noah doesn’t even deserve Helen and the writers must hate Helen if they put her back with Noah. Honestly it’s just bollocks because Helen’s entire arc throughout the show is about her never actually moving on from Noah, while Noah just remains being an class A fuckboy.
Oh, and they described Cole and Alison as a doomed fairytale. Fuck now. That bond that they had was too special that there was nothing doomed about it because they always would have ended up back together. They had the more interesting history. Meanwhile Helen and Noah literally had no bond apart from being addicted to each other.
The Affair is just about rich white privilege. Rich white assholes. I mean after the first two seasons, the show started to focus less on Cole/Alison, Alison THE FEMALE LEAD, The Lockharts and focused way WAY more on Noah, Helen and The Solloways. The most unlikable parts of the show.
I’ve never seen a show where the writers and EPs are so disconnected with the fans and what is popular with audiences.

Okay @fictionxlover Why should I bother with the final season of The Affair? First they kill off Alison, now Joshua Jackson isn’t returning as a series regular. Like I get it because he’s tied to Alison way more than Noah and Helen. But they have basically removed the superior and stronger part of the show to sastify their Noah boner which the audience doesn’t have for their resident fuckboy and Helen who is overrated as fuck since S1, when everyone but Josh got recognition for their work.
RIP The Affair. Should have finished after the first season.

do you think louisa is involved or too obvious?
I never thought that Luisa was involved. But then I went online and lots of people seem to think or want Luisa involved. Probably because they don’t want Cole and Luisa together and are Cole/Alison shippers. But here is the thing, the police have ruled that Alison died by suicide and that she drowned. We also know that she has suffered from depression since her son died. But it is still possible that Luisa could be involved. She could have argued with Alison, said some stuff about Joanie to tip her over the edge since earlier the season she wanted to take Joanie away from Alison so she can make a case to stay in the country by using her mental health against her and the fact that she abandoned Joanie and passed her off as Noah’s in her early years.

sweetchelseamae replied to your post: “The Affair just needs to reboot itself and focus on Alison and Cole because...”
Same. I only care about Cole and Alison’s story! I hate the first episode was all Noah basically.
Thank you! I’m so happy I’m not the only one! I haven’t been in the Tumblr tag for The Affair since Season 1 because I remember checking it and I loved Cole but it was all about Alison and Noah, especially Noah. There wasn’t a lot of Cole love. So it’s nice to see people love (and ship) Alison and Cole and their story.
I think the general audience when the show started, had this massive hard on for Noah (even though I never had it) but as the show went on, Noah really turned into this unlikable fuckboy and a lot of the audience don’t like him. The only people that do are the showrunners and writers. It’s ridiculous like Season 3 was basically about him when they gave that French chick who is clearly only Noah’s love interest and not integration with the narrative as a whole, her own POV.
Honestly, the show is a mess. Season 1 still remains the best season even though it doesn’t do great things for my Colison(?) heart. Because at least S1 was concise. I just have a lot of issues with the show, especially because the showrunner boasted after Season 1 that they had a three season plan for the show. Like I understood why. Season 1: The Affair, Season 2: Trying to move on, Season 3: Eventually moving on from The Affair (Whether that meant Alison and Noah or Alison and Cole reuniting or meeting new people). But them continuing clearly shows that they are trying to milk it for all its worth.
I just...Like this is the order of their priority...
Season 1) Noah, Alison, Helen then Cole. Season 2) Noah, Alison, Helen then Cole. Season 3) Noah, Helen, French Chick, Alison then Cole.
I can’t judge with Season 4 until I’ve seen it all. But... Noah, Helen, Alison, Cole.
It’s telling how low and underrated Joshua Jackson is by the writers when he was the only one to not get recognised for his work in Season 1.
The direction this show is heading. Alison and Cole need to reunite, I need flashbacks or fanfics on their past.
I need more shirtless Joshua Jackson.
Helen and Noah either need to reunite so they can be toxic together offscreen and destroy each other - of they need to end them and let Helen escape Noah’s web and be happy. They are toxic and not in a good way, not in a dramatic, entertaining way.

The Affair just needs to reboot itself and focus on Alison and Cole because I don’t give a fuck about Noah - the resident fuckboy that the writers just ridiculously love (It’s like Julie Plec’s love for Damon) and Helen, I just don’t care. I’m all for her to find happiness but a lot of her scenes are connected to Noah so I lose interest.
Tumblr media
I only watch it now for Cole, who I always thought was underrated since S1 and Alison because I fell in love with their history and lifestyle in S1.
