Tuesday Typings
I came back from the North American Science Fiction Convention with so many books. Notes on costume stuff, one giant costume todo list, and recent reads/watches as well.
Books acquired recently
The Archive Undying, Emma Mieko Candon, 2023, bought
This is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, 2020, bought — finished and enjoyed
The Sng of Achilles, Madeline Miller, 2012, bought
Translation State,, Ann Leckie, 2023, bought
Francis: The People's Pope, Ted Rall, allegedly autographed, 2018, bought
The Stars Like Dust, Isaac Asimov, 1996 paperback printing, gifted
The Courier, Gerald Brandt, 2016, free pile
Alliance Rising, C. J. Cherryh and Jane S. Fancher, 2019, free pile
Foundryside, Robert Jackson Bennett, 2019 Broadway promo printing, free pile
Mica, fille de Transyl, Michèle Laframboise, 2012, free pile — I do not read the French; this is going on a gift pile for a Francophone friend
To Climb a Flat Mountain, G. David Nordley, 2009?, bought after the author gave me an answer to a worldbuilding problem
Burning Days, Glenn Grant, 2011, free
This Virtual Night, C.S. Friedman, 2021, free
To Each This World, Julie Czerneda, 2022, free and signed
The Complete Smoke Trilogy, Tanya Huff, 2019, free
She Who Became The Sun, Shelley Parker-Chan, 2021, free
All of the free books are from Pemmi-Con; half are from DAW Publishers who were really, really generous.
Recent Reading and Watching
This is How You Lose the Time War surprised me with the identity of the Seeker; mid-book I thought there might be another operative tailing them, or a Purple child, or a third side to this war. That last prediction was quite close!
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - Bande Dessinee Episode: 0 wasn't particularly thrilling, but I value it because it fills out the characters of Full Frontal and Angelo Sauper, and how the Zeonist public sees things before the initiation of the Third Neo Zeon War, aka The Laplace Incident.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been good through season 7; I ned to track down season 8 to see if they later appearance of Ashoka in Star Wars Rebels makes any sense.
Legend of Galactic Heroes: I have finally finished this. RIP to a legend, but we all knew that the death flag for the last person to die was waved at the end of the third season. Rubinsky's end was also fitting: reflecting of how he was no longer part of the plot, he was also no longer part of politics. His last gasp felt irrelevant, and really was.
Pacific Rim: The Black is a 3dcg film that's reminiscent of RWBY and Dragon Prince in style, but with the same Ramin Djiwadi soundtrack, and some neat twists that really delve into the fridge horror of the setting. But this is a kids' show, so there's little blood, the decapitations happen out of frame, and the heads don't roll too far. Episode 7 has a nice "it's dangerous to go alone; take this" moment.
Computing
A 2.1A powerbank is not enough to stably power a Pi 1 B+ with a 4.0" square Hyperpixel Touch display and a wireless keyboard. Big Sad. Next question is if a PiSugar 3 battery controller will work with a Pi 1 B+ or if I should splurge $75 on a Pi 4 for this device.
I'd like to have a mobile compute terminal that's smaller than a 13" laptop, but still has USB ports. Scrollwheel and a button to toggle the OSK would also be nice.
Primary nonwork laptop's keyboard continues to degrade; It's becoming a desk item. Its degradation is the primary driver of the new palmtop development.
Actually, wait, I have a spare CM4 from a StereoPi 2 device. I could use that, with a compatible breakout board maybe. Or I could test the Hyperpixel screen on the Stereopi board directly. Then I'd have a 4" touchscreen mated to a … 5" wide board? Well, it'll at least let me test some things, like whether the CM4 works for this use case. Bonus dual cameras is a questionable bonus.
Crafting
KInda burnt out on crafting, tbh. Last two weeks were full of crunch before Pemmi-Con/NASFiC, which netted me a "Judge's Choice in Novice Class" award and "Best Use of Modern Tech" in the Masquerade competition.
Next up, over @glowingskull, I plan to post rundowns of the stuff I made, and maybe some shapefiles, but there's a lot of work left in this costume and I plan to redo large parts of the headgear.
Because, let's be honest, the post-con todo list for that costume is basically:
Better photographs?
Write up the project
Print off a holder for these parts, because I'm retiring them to mount on the wall
Redesign snout, again, to remove grilles and double-thicken all the parts
Resculpt temples and ears of skull
Put a visor in the eye holes
Eye-lights in visor?
Enclose head: back of skull, ventilation, neck sock
Redo the flame staff's camera monopod mount attachment point for durability (may require welding?)
Sculpt a model for the chestpiece, so it's plastic instead of foam
Sculpt a model for arm bracers
And then on top of that I also want to:
Document the Servicer outfit
Sew on a Masonic patch for the Servicer outfit
Build some DIY NVGs for use in costume projects like this one
Write up the Baba Yaga's Hut costume which won Best In Show
I think my next costume goal, after the revised Turaga Vakama, will be an Earth Federation Space Forces officer uniform, so I can give the planned "WTF is Zeon" lectures in character.
The next head goal will be a Deinonychus head with articulated jaw, which requires advancements in augmented reality. Need to get the StereoPi working, or ditch/sell it and switch to paired NVG monocles.
Music
I think it's time for Pacific Rim soundtracks. Pacific Rim: The Black sounds somewhere between the Pacific Rim movies' soundtracks and the tense violin work from the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ and Jude Law, soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Not particularly Australian, unfortunately.
Lego Stuff
Gotta merge the two submarine kits, and build the Emperor's Throne Room that I won at pinball at Pemmi-Con.

can i suggest screwdrivers with whipped cream Smirnoff? i drank about a million in the early pandemic bc u simply cannot taste the alcohol there either
Thursday again: overheating edition
I am trying not to go out during the day because it's like, 115 or something and records are being broken and such. Admittedly I wouldn't have realised that if the radio hadn't told me
Listening
The "old British musicians" roulette wheel is still on Madness. I don't think that Can't Touch Us Now is actually a good album, cos it's distinctly half baked, and yet the stray scraps of songs that are there are just profoundly catching. Very patchwork quilt, really.
youtube
Reading
If QC isn't letting us in for a Marten/Clare/slimegirl trio I will eat my cowboy hat.
(given the rate at which QC storylines move, it's not like anybody can call me on this in the next decade).
Drinking
This week's aid to composition is brought to you by Smirnoff screwdriver. it's orange! it doesn't taste like booze! where has this been all my life?
(and yet I'll be trying something different next week because. Uh. novelty. Still, I could do lots worse.)
Gaming
My ill-fated Fallen London alt has gone bankrupt trying to keep up with the monetary demands of Light Fingers. So it goes.
The main finally got to the Creditor storyline, which was groovy and well written and I would be feeling good about, if certain technical changes hadn't just made it incredibly annoying getting to Nightmares 7. I kicked the Manager's ass during Heart's Desire tho, so I'll write this off as him deliberately avoiding me. Ugh.
Writing
Novel word count clocking in around 25000 or so? I gotta consolidate versions at some point, but. effort.
Oh and this Fourth Doctor thing 😁
#now that a specific medication is a little better wrangled i can cautiously drink again#bc my tolerance is Completely fucked now i got WASTED in New Orleans off one and a half fairly light cocktails#TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND WORDS GODDAMN#the tuesday again no problem expanded universe and spinoffs

Is "last monday of the week" a reference to anything in particular?
Nothing in particular, I just like trivial truths, although I'm a franchisee of the weekly roundup post organization "Tuesday Again No Problem Expanded Universe and Spinoffs" which includes such gems as the Untitled Wednesday Library series, Monday Late Night Magic, in lieu of a commonplace book and of course Tuesday Again No Problem.
So I suppose it's a reference to the concept of giving something a name.

Last Lunesday of the Week
Not much to say here. Trying to ramp down on crafting and ramp up on writing.
Reading:
Still chewing away at Princess of Mandalore, which has acquired editors (fifty chapters in!) and mostly manages to have standards-compliant English, aside from odd tense choices. The plot also continues to be interesting: a Mandalore-focused retelling of the Clone Wars, with bonus jumpchained Japanese Salaryman.
I finally gave up on reading @val-and-isaac via the Tumblr website while logged out on a phone, and threw it into my RSS feed reader.
Not much else, really. Chowing down on Princess of Mandalore is taking a lot of time.
Watching:
Disappointed to see that Star Wars: Ahsoka has no more episodes left this season
Chewing away at Kino's Journey, in the sub, just as a background-noise thing while making dinner.
Probably going to start rewatching Gundam Zeta next month, just for the aesthetics.
Writing:
NaNoWriMo starts later this week; I'd like to get at least one more chapter of Gundam Iliad written by the end of the month. But I am a Planner, not a Pantser, and so the big blocker at the moment is "what order are the scenes in"?
Crafting:
Paused the Frogpad keyboard project because I am no longer staring down a period of obligate onehandedness.
Still fiddling around with the cyberdeck project's hardware, but I'm at the point where display-driver issues are probably going to force me to rebuild it with a different display, meaning a different CM4 carrier board, meaning a different case.
Working on Version 2 of my Turaga Vakama costume, aiming for something that doesn't hang off the front of the face like a limpet. Have a revised snout for the Huna ready for a print, and as a test I'm going to do some light papercraft as the base for this mask. If it works out well, I might try to do it in sheet metal. Won't *that* be fun to get through airports?
BPNVG cameras have shipped, so sometime this winter I'll get started on a set of dislocated camera/screen pairs for use in costumes where eye cannot see straight forward.
[redacted Halloween project that is too IRL to be posted here]

tuesday again 8/31/21
what a dreadful august
listening another double song week babey, making up for lost time. my dearly beloved best friend recommends media maybe twice a year if i’m lucky but her recs are always on fucking point.
crucible by sleigh bells was described to me as “a scrub brush to the brain but in a good way” and yes!!! very good song to drive around and let wash over you.
youtube
toes by glass animals was described to me as “makes me feel like a pretty bitch”. this is a slinky little thing about The Island of Dr Moreau. due to being partially deaf and glass animals’ love of drawing out all the vowels in their words to their fullest length, i am rarely able to comprehend their lyrics. i am simply Vibing with this one
youtube
reading The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty. while unpacking, i remembered reading and liking this when it came out but could not remember why until i read the first few chapters again. small-time magical hustler trying to do the least amount of harm to her neighborhood while making the most money possible off rich fucks accidentally heats up a centuries-old magical cold war. at some point i will acquire the other two books in this series and become a person who like, follows recent scifi/fantasy publishing again
watching stress-watching s/tar wars r/ebels, which i did not keep up with when it was on the air. whales but weird are always and forever the best creature/beast concept. you cannot change my mind. i’m only halfway through s2 so a cooler creature and/or beast may show up but i think that’s pretty unlikely
playing bounced off the terra nil demo pretty hard. the interesting premise (rebuilding a devastated ecosystem, bc i have a pathological need to Fix Things) was not enough to get me over the hump of a genre i generally don’t vibe with (strategy/city builders/make the number go up in the most efficient way possible). also, this demo is a little rough. the tutorial and prompts are unclear at best. they have all the pieces, just no signposts. and i think this game will take the fuck off among a certain subset of people (it helps it’s already got pretty strong interest and they’re doing all the “right” things to promo it), but it needs a lot of quality of life and general clarity improvements. that’s the point of a demo, to get this feedback from your audience and really nail your gameplay loop before everything is too set in stone, especially for strategy-ish games that need a lot more iteration before they exit early access. devolver games tend to spend a little longer in early access, so even though this looks pretty polished i would estimate late 2023/early 2024 for a “full” release/non-early access build and would expect an early access version for like ten bucks next spring (earth day would be a good day to release an early access version of this). hope they do well, Free Lives seems like a neat team, not a game for me. so it goes. image yoinked from their steam page
making yee hop. i really really love cross stitch patterns by pixel artists bc they use color and shading in really fun ways. there’s usually a lot more “confetti” or single stitches of a color that aren’t anywhere near “sister” stitches of the same color, but imo it’s worth it. this static image looks like it should be a three-frame gif gently bobbing up and down as a page header somewhere

everyone please welcome our newest member!!! your letterman jacket will be arriving by a team of carrier pigeons whenever they get there

listening
im back in locked tomb trenches, listening to "locked tomb podcast" w amy and mel + "one flesh one end" w baily and kabriya, ive re-read up to...about chapter 22ish in gideon so im listening to the episodes up to that point and then gonna read up to the next episode's chapter and listen as i go!
music-wise, listen, shriekcast did the movie review of twilight and they are absolutely right that soundtrack is banging. so paramore decode has been up on the lists. also the over the garden wall soundtrack because tis the season, and the newest sammy rae & the friends singles are jams!
reading
as mentioned in listening, re-reading gideon the ninth rn. delicious.
watching
the new watcher haunted place series! ryan and shane's dynamic is the same as in buzzfeed unsolved and it's like watching a comforting hug. they're so delightful. currently halfway through the hull house one.
youtube
playing
got back into sky: children of the light! it's such a cozy game and i love the soundtrack
making
life drawing monday, i also got some pumpkins from the corn maze on saturday and i want to set up a still life to paint!
BONUS: what delights have i experienced this week?
walking around - went to a corn maze on saturday the 22nd, damn that corn sure can maize! truly bizarre. they had a sandbox for kids except it was full of corn kernals and when we walked by it there was a group of children gleefully burying one of their own in corn
fellowship - last tuesday 10/18, my roommate gave a public science talk at a local bar so i went to that, and then hung out with friends til midnight (which was when the bar closed and also when the night ticked over into the next day, i.e. her birthday)
deliciousness - many things! at that same bar someone bought my roommate a "jungle bird" which is a very tasty mixed drink. in metaphorical deliciousness i got a haircut friday and it feels great.
goofing - probably the corn maze?
transcendence - quantum midterm went pretty well!!! i understand quantum!!! gaslighting works!!!
amelioration - hmm probably life drawing again
coitus - n/a
enthrallment - n/a
wildcard - went on a cool house tour before the corn maze of this place, they kinda hustled us through but it was still super neat. descendents of the original owners still live there so there were large portions of the house that were off limits but wowie. also the guy outside who was giving architectural background for the building said the topmost attic/widows walk was empty inside, basically just for looks/vibe of the structure, and i thought "damn just like building houses in minecraft"
#SHABBOSPOSTING charms me no end#the DELIGHTS section is so good#this post is like a big box of tiny fancy assorted candy#the tuesday again no problem expanded universe and spinoffs

Last Monday Of The Week
I have decided to throw my hat in the ring to join the Tuesday Again No Problem Expanded Universe And Spinoffs, you can blame this on @girlfriendsofthegalaxy. It is a weekly Something where I summarize The Week. I’ll figure out the format as I go along but I’m probably going to start by lifting the original directly. This is primarily to encourage me to do more things each week, and to supplement my personal diarizing. I like to see this not as being before the original Tuesday Again, but instead the last thing in a week that starts on Tuesdays.
Listening: A lot of things but I’m going to link to this hilarious Loadshedding Playlist by @beccaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh. I contributed a handful of track suggestions. South Africa has rolling blackouts right now so here’s a collection of songs about light, electricity, and darkness to keep you going the next time your electricity is out.
Reading: Finished Le Petit Prince, the Michael Morpurgo translation. This one goes under books I should have read when I was 15, which weirdly puts it in the same class as Evangelion. It’s short and economical but not in a minimalist way, more in a to the point way.
Also started The Illiad, the Robert Fagles Translation. I have a hard time reading books with difficult text, even if I’m interested in the contents itself, because I have to stop dead and look up words or comprehend meanings a lot, which often leads to my ADHD ass getting distracted. Reading non-science academic-ish writing still weirds me out, just a little.
Watching: Started the new Lupin series on Netflix, a modern Arsène Lupin adaptation. It’s pretty good, watching it with my parents so we’re using the English dub rather than the original French. Compelling enough story with good reveals and I tend to go “oh he’s gonna do the thing” a minute before he does the thing which is a good sign. Every second scene feels over or under-exposed which is weird, not sure if that’s just me or not.
Playing: I haven’t played Horizon Zero Dawn in weeks so I restarted since I wasn’t too far along anyways and I had totally forgotten what was going on. What a pretty game. Still mad that I watched that letsplay and spoiled the extremely good twists and reveals of this story! Gah!
Making: I made bread! Specifically Durban Naan, a sweetened spiced loaf. Recipe and more details in this post.
I have NOT made much progress on my embroidery project from hell, I will endeavour to do that when I watch YouTube Bullshit more this week.
Bonus Computers Slot: This slot intended for Weird Software Bullshit I get up to. I’m still planning on retiring KDE in favour of i3 but KDE software is still very good. The build of KSysGuard from OpenSUSE Tumbleweed has a really easy to uses dashboarding tool that lets you make nice high-information displays like this:
There’s even the option to monitor the KSysGuard daemon of another machine over the network, which I imagine could be very useful indeed.

tuesday is BINGO night
hello! long time reader of @girlfriendsofthegalaxy 's tuesday again no problem series and spinoffs, first time poster! i've wanted to do try this for a while and apparently today is the day!
format is subject to change. because i really wanted a fun name for this series and this is funny but not ideal. i don't even play bingo…
Best thing of the week: started a play by post ttrpg game with my partner! we're using the system dark heresy
musIc: king gizzard and the lizard wizard - catching smoke
youtube
makiNg: i have been crocheting! i am a beginner and i've been doing basic amigurumi patterns that i find on youtube and random blogs when i google free patterns. it's incredible how many things people will make into little plushies! i have scrolled past multiple crochet fried chicken buckets. i've been proud of some of these attempts (rose, whale, totoro) and i've frogged one or two (lumpy mouse) but i am most delighted by my attempt at following a polar bear pattern that turned into connetticut clark.
i have made him shorts.
Gaming: mini metro! the mobile version. i've played mini motorways before but mini metro just plays better somehow? it's just the right sized bite of optimization fun for me. i started playing a bit over a week ago and it's been fun seeing my rank on the daily levels go up from bottom 30% to bottom 45%
loOking: watching spy x family with my family, and i really love the animation for the opening and closing credits with the different art styles. no further thoughts right now but it's good vibes.
free space: i'm excited to try keeping this up! i want some way to track the passage of time, because now that i'm done with school i want to make sure i'm regularly engaging with things that i like or at least think are interesting. but this can't be too high effort otherwise it will stop... we shall see how this evolves over time. for now, i got a BINGO this week!
#tuesday again no problem#the tuesday again no problem expanded universe and spinoffs#hi! i hope you don't mind that i tagged you for this first post!#i really enjoy your series#bingo night blogging#Youtube

i feel like with Celestial Mechanics their relationship was so much more Fraught (the class difference, the age difference, the employee/employer relationship) i bought the very slow feeling things out as we go relationship but 1) i was way more invested in this book as an astronomer and 2) waspish widows is a good hundred pages longer (according to my paperback copies) so i think you’re very correct in that waite’s given herself more room to fuck around in that may not always feel like it’s needed? her longer book protags sometimes feel more on the ace/demi end of the spectrum, which is a marked contrast to her novellas that are mostly setups for some imaginative p/orn. man i gotta fuckin finish waspish widows and read the THIRD of hers in this series, hellion’s waltz
in lieu of a commonplace book
saturday, jan 15, 2022, 5pm pst — sunday, jan 16, 2022, 10 pm pst
what is a week, a month, a new year? a silly little series of days
head full, many thoughts, most of them about television! spoilers for star trek : discovery’s season 1
reading not a ton to report, on the book side of things. i'm trying to reduce the number of ao3 tabs open on my phone by deliberately finishing and closing things, which has meant some trips down memory lane (81 chapter yuri on ice fic from 2018, we meet again), and in so doing have been neglecting the vacation reads i packed for myself. on the brighter side, i've joined a couple of storygraph reading challenges for 2022 and am looking forward to the exploration these will require-- the one book i have started and been making progress on so far this year is olivia waite's the care and feeding of waspish widows, which i would highly recommend so far!
(can't say a whole lot for the cover design, though.)
waite's previous wlw historical romance, the lady's guide to celestial mechanics, established a pattern which she follows again here, so both protagonists have a distinctive hobby/occupation/craft, in this case 19th century printing and bee-keeping, and this gives a lot of rich detail to the books themselves before you even get to the steamier dimensions. also liking waspish widows for the fact that both of our leads are in their forties!! and are a certain amount of jaded and/or world-weary! i'll say this for it, though, that while i totally buy the budding tenderness between the two protagonists, and while i'm excited to have the discussions of law, politics, art, beekeeping, etc., we're like 40% into the book and so far it is...not especially erotic. the introduction of 'oh these characters are attracted to each other' has felt...sort of arbitrary? i feel like i had this problem with celestial mechanics too? have i just been spoiled for published romances by the better slow-burn fan works i've been lucky enough to find? will definitely keep reading, however.
watching more thoughts on star trek: discovery, **spoilers for discovery season 1 ** one of the lessons i've had to learn watching picard and discovery this past month, is that i didn't keep up with star trek especially well post-voyager. or to put it another way, i was raised on next generation and there's just no escaping the fact that it shapes my tastes to this day. so it's been a strange revelation (though it probably shouldn't be) that...each decade or so makes the star trek of it's own tastes and sensibilities. and these are not the same, today, as they were when tng or ds9 were being released. these newer star trek series (so far; in the early eps of disco season 2 there has already been a palpable shift that gives me a lot of hope) feel like they want so badly to be star wars, to have galactic-level conflict (literally the Klingon war… a literal star war) and the highest of stakes in addition to gleaming surfaces and acrobatic fight scenes, and it's just...i stop caring when the scale is too big, because it feels (ironically!) cheaper than if we were fighting over 100 lives, or ten. i miss the philosophizing, i miss the holodeck, i miss the various characters' personal logs as a story-telling device— I miss planet-or-weird-nebula-of-the-week.
(god she's incredible. what can't she do. i'm living for her hair journey. i'm living for her eyes.)
they're s l o w l y reintroducing some of these things, in the midst of the lens flares and occasionally super clunky dialogue (disco writers may i introduce you to...the subjunctive? or like, dialogue that isn't largely exposition?). maybe it's the delivery, i feel like almost everyone is unnaturally stilted and it only works for sonequa martin-green bc a) michael's vulcan upbringing and b) she's a motherfucking artist and steals every single scene. (something i noticed in Picard, too, was a different level of, dare I say, naturalism in some of the deliveries: people with stage training, Michelle Hurd and Anthony rapp and even Patrick stewart sometimes, bless him, are just…the reads are different, and it’s enough that I was able to say to myself ‘hmm I bet MH has a theatre background’ and then check imdb and be correct). but like, i was pretty skeptical of a lot of choices made in the conception of this klingon war story line, i found the tardigrade / spore drive slightly ridiculous while appreciating that they were introduced for Plot Reasons. I got very heavy doctor who vibes from the alternate universe stuff and was seriously debating whether they'd jumped the shark with the introduction of nega!georgiou (as good as michelle yeoh is), before the reveal that lorca had been nega!lorca the whole time, which was kind of beautiful— it made every objection i'd had to lorca and his jingoism/willingness to sacrifice personnel and longterm success 'for the war' fall into place (though a lot of the ‘for the war’ attitude from other characters, cough ash tyler cough, remained a bit grating). also michael's whole speech in the last episode about holding to starfleet's principles made me stop and consider whether i was wrong and the show had actually had me right where it wanted me the whole time. ugh. ** end of spoilers**
i also have now watched episodes 1-7 or so of the cdrama the wolf/ lang dianxia (2020), and while obviously i began watching and have continued to hold out for xiao zhan's appearance (according to imdb he was in ep 1 somewhere, but i missed it and won't be going back to rewatch any time soon in an effort to get to his proper introduction faster), it is a valuable experience in other ways. i'm really loving li qin as the main female character, she is not only extremely beautiful but has the same command of all her incremental facial movements that i admired xiao zhan for in cql, so ma zhaixing as a character is obviously built of several tropes, but lq is imbuing her with this humanity at the same time... also this show like. passes the bechdel test. also i like how it has evolved its own concept a few times already? i thought it was going to be A Certain Way at the beginning, and then it time-skipped, and now we're doing 'arranged marriage' trope stuff, and...yeah, it's something i'll keep watching. xz better hurry up and get here though. also i looked this show up on Wikipedia and was immediately spoiled for something so rip me i guess, never actually investigate these things you should know better. 😔 poster slaps, though.
listening one of the drains on my mental health while visiting family is that i don't have control of the aux cord as much, so to speak. when i realize this, and start carving out time to listen to my own tunes (volunteering to cook solo, going on long walks and not inviting others, etc.), things inevitably improve. but the song of the post is still a moody one, i love the instrumentation's build and energy and i also love the fact that it's written from the pov of a real character. I had the refrain ‘cause I’m not in the right state of mind’ playing in my head on repeat for a lot longer than is probably healthy back in dec; it was relatable at the time.
youtube
playing conversely, one of the real joys of being with my folks is the chance to continue our epic, decades-long scrabble clash of the titans. last night my dad played ‘zoomer’ on a double word score that garnered a tidy 50+ points, a personal best of his and the high score of the game…until I put ‘quiz’ off of his ‘z’ tile with that ‘q’ on a triple. 66 points. still feeling untouchable. /hairflip
making got some oil pastels (but like, the kids version) for Christmas and have begun playing around with them, which is fun. the texture is very pleasant, even if the actual consistency isn’t probably that high. making my bff a little portrait of her dog (rough sketch below), which I may post if it turns out to be anything.
working on I got an offer to do a guest-lecture in a course at my institution called ‘the Celtic book’ and, meeting with the instructor on Friday, I got all excited about topics I could cover and maaaaaay have seriously over-promised. The lecture’s on Tuesday and I played hooky all weekend so tomorrow is about prepping some slides and prioritizing what I actually need to say, versus getting sucked into rabbit holes and wasting time on trying to decide if the white book has been quietly rebound?? since the 2018 digitization?? (celticists please @ me it’s bananas)

Last Monday of the Week
More checklist weeks! [Previously]
Reading and Watching
Finished Eighty-Six; found it to be good. Contemplating building a juggernaut in Lego, because that's really what the Rahkshi dorsal armor is for, right?
Started watching Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, since it's one of the Gundams that I haven't seen yet. I was flabbergasted to find out that the organization "Blue Cosmos" from the renowned Worm fic Trailblazer wasn't from Ward or obscure Worm WOG, but is in fact something from SEED.
Need to start reading an acquaintance's draft novel, for feedback purposes.
Computing/Crafting
In the extended project to make a portable pi computer using whatever scraps I have laying around, I'm now up to case revision 19, backplate revision 7, knob revision 3, and three emails deep in a warranty claim on the screen which seems to have gotten something loose. :(
Still haven't figured out the knob drivers yet; been hung up on more pressing issues like the screen and having a usable case.
The project is usable, but it's making me think about filesystem synchronization across computers. There's at least four distinct clusters of content I'd like to sync, and not all of it works well with Git. Maybe just version-control the things that aren't binary blobs, and push/pull the rest from a remote drive?
Might start a redo of the Vakama mask, too. Having to marry it to a 3M 6200 makes things awkward and face-heavy; I want to make a construction helmet attachment or something.
Writing

housekeeping: i want to make it 100% clear i do not own the concept of a weekly roundup and anyone is free to do one, the “tuesday again no problem expanded universe and spinoffs” tag is just a handy organizational tag for me.
but if you do decide to start an instance of this concept please tag me so i can see

Womp Womp Wednesday
Today's a checklist-making kind of day, and a checklist-ticking kind of week. I know what I want to do; just need to do the things.
[previously]
Reading and watching
Started watching the anime 86 Eighty-Six on a recommendation from the Terra Ignota Discord server. It's a neat story with good visuals, even if the animation is at times quite CGI. Everything that has been foreshadowed has paid off, which is quite good writing. I'm up through S1E10, so there's a little way yet to go.
UKLG's Gifts is neat as an episodic novel; this provides some inspiration for how to handle a longer-form narrative story that I wasn't sure would fit in a continuous day-by-day format like that used by, say, the Discworld novels.
r/r/'s group read channel has taken a turn towards shipgirl fic, so I'm reading a bunch of that. Presently reading Salvage, Sarcasm, and Submarines, which is the author's first fic and boy does that show in the writing quality. But despite the weird POV flips, the grammar and punctuation errors, and the atypical decision to personify the ship-faeries, I'm enjoying the story. The author clearly has an arc in mind, and knows the setting. Plus the premis is just fantastic: a nuclear submarine Abyssal rogue.
Computing/Crafting
I found my 3A powerbank, so the "Square Pi" project I mentioned last week is a go. I've replaced the pokey Pi 1B+ with the best available Pi in the house: a CM4 mounted to a StereoPi v2 carrier board. Testing with a HyperPixel 4 Square Touch worked great (well, with the Debian image, not with PostmarketOS). I've removed the cameras, and am fabricating a case. Currently on print 10. I don't have reference models in Blender for the StereoPi v2, and that makes modeling hard.
Maybe it'll be in usable shape by this evening; maybe not!
Writing
This is a to-do list, covering the next week-month-year-ever:

Skeleton We're Gonna Sit Here And Drink Beer Until We Understand Women T Shirt
I am a Skeleton We're Gonna Sit Here And Drink Beer Until We Understand Women T Shirt big fan of Rashida Jonesand whatever she wants to pursue I think that 95 is one of those movies you hear is debate about all the time on the shelf what 80s movies what movies of all time should be rebooted what should never be touched 95 is a great comedyand I think it is so right to be remade for another generation for application by the why the original story is original stories are so special she so we went to just do not hearing society what better example of something to worry is complementary to the original members were Darren came in your face when now actually was okay with me because my schedule in the rain the original most of the original mistake as he served a purpose in this movie a fair purpose where to start drawing or we really need new characters Barringer just wink winkand I want to be like if another is because I can award show was but all three of them reunited I think for for some sort of award to a standing ovationand celebrating the three women that were 9 to 5and it’s like they can still play a meaningful part in this theory is the potential for me only one junk I think the concept is brilliantand brilliant for this time Rashida Jones working on something like that yet is almost like the decrease of the article reflect what we see on screen where you have a trio younger women being mentored by the original gas Rashida Jones working with Pat Resnick the creative the whole thing is this something that speaks to you exactly how they progres I am a little nervous about the whole link we remember that part from the first of the kind of being overwhelming the fresh take will be to pull off mainly because I do have so much a severity even creative time of the original in your Jane finally when I having great success in breaking Frankie sexy refined chess I think in terms of vans still being on their game still being funny still being wickedand knowing what Sharpand Lexmark but give me the confidenceand I think also working with Rashida Jones who is very smartand can even get as much credit she deserves a writerand creator put offand unconsciously happenand Rashida Jones growing up eight Odyssey in the public eye being that the daughter Quincy Jonesand and seeing Hollywood from a very young perspective she might actually be the best choice for a reason to do a reboot because she seemed the evolution of the evolution of Conley in there just one of the reasons why she is such a talent J is there is or something to my theory that you have to get better at making reboots where it’s like anything you studied incomeand you see what we’ve done better with Ghostbusters Hathaway rebooted that better to where maybe this movie 510 years from now really betterand more careful about how we go about making reboots you you just sent you study the pasty study game film except by now was okay is as it took so long so much game film but you she’s not she knows from the insideand again we see M Ghostbusters you all will give it has to try but I think there’s a precedent setand then we watchand we saw how you just shall been Bill Murray shall be in Danette brain is like that’s not what you should’ve done this I think she knows how to do it Rashida Jones can do no wrong she is brilliant she skimmed her commute timeand is amazing any Tribeca’s wanted great shells out so for her to take a classic comedy like thisand like you said Lily Tomand Jane Jane Fonda are doing amazing Grace Frankie this is a recipe for success already built in the southern that is no wrong if they anything goes wrong this is not in Rashida’s aunt at all is a somebody to set hey how this might the studio how about you just do this without our control but if what she writes this to write a script that make us againand Dolly Parton cameo somewhere slid in like me to stop forcing is just slated somewhere it all works you need a viewing of the greatest comedies of all that ignited fires up in my favor office comedy ever is office space you look forward to the McColgan psychotic there in a very soon for Nassau patriarch I think they 9 to 5 the reboot is get a Odyssey modernize what the office workplace is going to be like if he had three younger ladies are taking the center roll anybody got any testing options you want to throw out the right now could be one of the appearing those things that she easier or works on creatively backpack just thinking in terms of other creative forces you could be able to handle addressing the current climateand having a funny flask when you take great Amy Poulenc if they were pushing watchesand just talking about things are happening all those instances in which opposing the Golden glovesand this is almost Rashida Jones a chance to do a similar in a movie formatand life and Donna Blank in handwringing yes so works like a perfect that same similar type of life she had dilated as 1000 I like the color I I enjoy pitch perfect movies for what they are but I think it too often rebel Wilson has been put into one box I think that this could be the kind of vehicle that would get her out ofand B herself a little bit more but I would also pare her with Tiffany had a fun activity has is such a a comedic force to be reckoned with right now I would love to see them to keep away from thisand it may not be a popular opinion take the tenantand I say that the table is being shoehorned into things of a rough night everybody was always to be amazing with her I thought you the best part of a rough night the same as what is the major problem what are my little gnome is likely the best like you can with the best part of the Ghostbusters remake Tuesday was between herand Leslie Jones is either one of them in this movie but is one of those that you know you orderand if she’s but if you’re mechanicaland I’m gonna be happy with it but she does cause a divide among standard it’s a weird thing yeah this see that is likely there’s their secret is enjoyed everybody enjoyed girl strip right we dislike they were laughing a lot he has is still a lot of the same but everybody’s great you have actors like Amy can you comes on screenand it’s like some people overand some people hereand I simply don’t get angry you are talkingand went over talking on the were talking about it it’s really up to you guys were 11 chat room cast the new 9 to 5 treatmentand will book all Rashidaand Pat Resnickand let him know who you guys is a common right now or on YouTube after the fact you will hear from you guys are next story is Chris Hemsworth is known as Thor we decided to write Rockwell does appear he is going to be the lead in the new man in black spinoff as recommended by spinoff has been through many iterations of been a lot of rumors about what this will or will not include load could be a team up with 21 just happening just yet but Chris Hemsworth is being I to play the lead in it now family what they would like to have is Chris Hemsworth a black femaleand then an older person whose kind mentoring these two young ones apparently is to take place in the same men in Black universe as the original movie so are not totally rebooting it were just ushering in a new generation of people in black J Washington is that the right way to read this for youand don’t because everybody was concerned they were to skip over doing thisand go straight to the cross of which one to gentry so I’m fine with this I’m perfect because I gave you ushering this new generation especially after many blackberry a lot of people it was devised that was a very slim movie like I like Josh Brolin but then again it didn’t was negativeand better beginnings acolyte Wilson could not stand that movie I say I cannot say there was some gorgeous diehard in my defense will with it Chris Hemsworth has proven he is a comedic force when he is allowed to do what he wants to doand you can do it welland if you going to do thi I can’t similar with aliens we’ve already seen what he does not go back to writing is interacts with Cerner in the very beginning at the red rock is hysterical so expand that in taking the you know is we don’t know if he’s an established member MIB if he becomes like the Will Smith as character where he’s draftedand he has to find us out to be problem with this for here for this one Chris hazards with The play Thor it made sense on its ear because of how well he’s he’s blotted Jack okay calland then we seen in Thor it’s like he’s putting his batteries as Guardian he doesn’t know really how our language or colloquialisms work but he still funny he is still able to be funnyand then you put it in a movie any that as part of our with vacation or you get this even Ghostbustersand got some good lines in SOI like Chris Hemsworth deleting that also being comedic however he does has not hit at the box office away from the Marvel movies like I think he should. Without any clothes onand like the guy that youand Yoko had everybody or invited people to come into the bedroom while you were there we held a bed in fatigue a bed in for peace exactly what you do those things what what Iand and I don’t ask you that because I want to engender some flip response from you but what is that game for you as John Lennon or what is a gain for the cause of peace in the case of the bedand for you to do some like that Yokoand I when we got togetherand decided whatever we knew whatever we did was gonna be in the papersand up when it’s original is all so and so gets mad whenever people like us do is gonna be in the papers so we decided to utilize the space we would occupy anyway by getting married with a commercial for peaceand also a theatrical eventand a theatrical event we came up with in which utilize the least energy with a maximum effect was to work from badand wobbly that they had was a seven day press conference in bed by the past for the first day they fall to the door to get. The cuts in that city 1 billion kind New York and it’s become a disaster your reaction to this whole deep on the police after madness is going on the country well it’s ridiculous and we should do the opposite of the funding we should help the police more they have been taken gets up and take it out and it’s it’s very sad that we talked to the governor if you look at Oregon and and you look at what’s going on out there were willing to Alpena we need is supposed to call and say please send out but you know honestly that 10 000 great law enforcement people there really they can take care of it themselves but we be glad to send in the National Guard and solve the problem like we did in Minneapolis we solved that problem in one hour after they arrived we can do it in Portland so easy we can do it in Chicago a little more difficult it’s a different kind of a problem one is anarchist and the other people to go around indiscriminately shooting everyone and themselves
