when they've got interpreting spiderman noir under a specific cultural lens at the function [picture of me going insane]
I cant help myself.. what can i say. And since you've mentioned some research going on behind the scenes.. do you have any fun interpretations? Or even anything fun about the 1800s!
OH HI
Hm. I don't have anything as fun as historical dancing, but I suppose this does give me the excuse (thabk u) to blab about Noir's childishness.
(wow putting this under the cut bc it got longer than I thought it would LMAO)
I think what a lot of people (including Noir's contemporary writers and yes even the spiderverse interpretation) fall for when trying to read Noir's character is the imitation of his idea of what an adult is, that he hides behind. Like Noir's persona is incredibly exaggerated. He's playing pretend. Look here, he's practicing.
A lot of his persona as Noir is imitation! Imitation of his uncle, of Urich, of the violence he's been exposed to. He's running around in his uncle's old uniform. Fundamentally misunderstanding WHY his uncle had been ashamed of it and his role in the war.
And then he goes ahead and steals Urich's alias because it sounds Cool (which is such a teenage thing to do jesus christ).
But like that imitation of The Adult isn't something that's limited to that exaggerated persona that Noir encapsulates. Peter himself is trying So Hard to be grown up and tough and responsible that it loops back around to him being a brat who would try the three guys in a trench coat trick. He even gets beat up for it when trying to defend his aunt. And I mean I've posted about him being a brat.
About how he looks at Urich as a Prime Example of what a strong and knowledgeable adult is (which is part of why he reacts so volatile in response to Urich showing he's not exactly as morally righteous as himself, he's wounded and let down). Whiskey? Whiskey sounds like someone Mature and Cool would drink, I'll have it too. And then proceeds to throw his drink at Osborn and laugh about it. The illusion was broken for me then.
But well it's not broken for everyone. I mean like obviously I poked at the contemporary writers, but I'm more talking about the other characters in the narrative. Mainly Urich and Felicia.
Urich taking Peter under his wing isn't entirely under the motivation to nurture Peter. I think it Becomes that, but he's really envious of that kid. He wants to see him lose that hope that he once had (ruh roh the opposite thing happened, being around the kid made YOU more hopeful Ben. Guess you gotta be good. Hope you don't die now).
Urich really is exposing him to an extremely harsh reality, and taking him places where adults are typically only allowed. He's letting Peter get a glimpse into what it's like, which will eventually enable Noir's tool of violence. All these tests will accumulate into what Peter thinks someone powerful and strong can be and do.
Then his problematic relationship with Felicia (writers I'm malleting you for this). He's clinging to her adulthood and the safety she represents, and he's young but she sees some adult strength in him. I mean she trusts him with the blackmail Urich gave her, which she really. Shouldn't, even if that's what Urich wanted.
Anyway, strength is something she's been consistently drawn to her in her partners. Strength to feel as her own. Even if it's to hers and others' detriment. There's also a part of Peter that's drawn to Felicia because Urich was. He's still honing in the good parts of Urich he wants to be.
I think the one person in the narrative who doesn't fall for it? Is Aunt May. You could argue it's just her being naturally motherly, but for someone who was about to be eaten alive she's pretty frank with Noir. I think she can see that that violence and exaggerated grittiness comes from someone inexperienced and young. Even if she can't consciously recognize the similarities between Noir's persona and Peter's protectiveness of her. I don't think she wants to see that. I actually have a short comic script about that, but it probably will never see the light of day.
Ugh he's like a cat puffing up to scare away a predator. It's fake!!!!! It's all fake!!!!!! He gets intimidated by JJ, he never ties his shoes, gets powers and then immediately guns to beat the shit out of Osborn, sings about the sandman when he's getting his face bashed in, crawls to Felicia all pathetic and sad, and he made a costume to run over roofs at night in.
And it's funny how he's forcing himself to grow up, but also really sad because all the things he's being exposed to is already forcing him to grow up. He's witnessing things no kid should ever see or experience.
Then there's the time period to consider. The aftermath of WWI, being in the midst of the Great Depression, and WWII just around the corner. He's faced incredible hardship and is going to continue to face so much hardship, and he's going to mature faster than he ever should have. It should have made him crash and burn Hard when he became an adult, and to me he still does because I'm ignoring everyone after ewaof LMAO.
As for my research on the 1800s NY that's for my own spider iteration run I'm working on, so not too related to Noir until I reach the 30's :3
Hope that was satisfying!!
#tw grooming#critter talks#asks#the moots#fool!!!!!!#spider man noir#character analysis#abt the research like logically I know the typical new yorker isn't gonna know abt the specificities of the original dutch colony#and intricacies that the boom of industrialization had on lower class communities#but it's less about that and more of digging my hands into the Soul of NY#because NY is so Intertwined with any spider#so I'm starting from the Very beginning and digging my way up. man y'all were a hot mess#it's really fascinating though working my way through documentaries and books. the list is long and the dent I've made is about an 8th ASDF#anyway MAYBE y'all will see spiderman undiscovered one day...ask me abt it again if y'all like miles being a detective w a shoulder demon#for now it's me my 55 of world building slides several character note docs and a to read list of about 20 books long#would like to go to NY citay one day & oogle at the stinky subway draw some storefronts and people watch but thats not in the budget rn#also trying to look for movies n shows that aren't exaggerations of the culture so if anyone has recommendations DO @ me please#wanna do her justice bc I care about her#ALSO FOOL I'M SO SORRY FOR TAKING A DAY TO ANSWER#had to get my thoughts togther

I think I've said a couple times that seeing too much radiosilence angst made me want a fluffier qpr version, but tbh I still want all of the angst; it just needs to be framed as eventually leading to a happy ending.
alastor and vox hating each other is thematically inevitable. I am in love with the fake enemies trope; I tried playing around with that, but there is no universe where these characters are remotely close to canon and actually like each other lmao. I think it needs to be more "vox pretends he only hates alastor and alastor pretends he doesn't care about vox but they actually both understand that they really had something and destroyed it because of mutual differences." like, symbolically, it's old vs. new, right? and alastor is good because he values what worked in the past and cares about artistic integrity but bad because he refuses to see progress or accept change; vox is good because he's innovative and ambitious but bad because he's tacky and too profit-driven. that dynamic has way too much potential for us to skip the part where they grow to see the good side of each other's perspectives while keeping their own identities intact.
AUGH the angst would just be too good; vox and alastor kind of being on the same wavelength at first when they weren't too far apart era-wise, alastor not really taking his ambitions seriously and finding them entertaining, vox actually caring at first about making TV as a legitimate creative endeavor and them connecting over a love for entertainment ... but eventually vox gains power, he starts getting distracted by money and takes shortcuts, he stops creating almost completely because it's easier to make contracted souls do it instead. alastor's cute plaything (that maybe was actually interesting to talk to and had good ideas ...) becomes this tacky capitalist that he can't manipulate as easily, so he gets bored of him. vox is so happy when he finally becomes an overlord; alastor is gonna be so proud! only for him to realize that alastor never saw him that way. alastor never actually liked him, did he?
cue them getting mad at each other and starting a feud that is much more comical on the outside than it is privately. vox is still a little confused and very much in pain ... he knows his own flaws but his greed has too much of a hold on him to make him actually change for alastor (vox: I'll do anything! just tell me what to do, what to change, and I will. please just stay. alastor: would you give up your company? power? money? would you stay with *me*? vox: ...). alastor is disappointed and tries to make it seem like he really had no affection for vox, but those memories of drinking together on sunday nights, listening to how excited vox was about a new invention ... maybe, in the very back of his mind, he realizes he misses that. that he feels left behind.
#a lot of fandom discussions I've seen on their breakup is very focused on alastor's aroaceness or just alastor not wanting to join the vees#and I love all of that!#but I think there's aspects of digging deeper into what these characters' perspectives MEAN that we could get more mileage out of#also this is just stuff I'm interested in cause I think about it when it comes to art/movies a lot#actually come to think of it this is very relevant to hazbin#the way it manages to be popular and innovative despite starting as a 2D indie animation with characters made by a teenager#augh I just have feelings about artistic integrity being sacrificed for profit but art also needing popular approval to exist at all#and the way we need to find a compromise between them#THEY NEED TO FUCK SYMBOLICALLY#hazbin hotel#meta#my meta#hazbin hotel alastor#hazbin hotel vox#radiostatic#radiosilence

one thing i really liked about i saw the tv glow (spoilers btw) that i dont know if i was able to articulate right away was how it positions the viewer in the same feeling of ambiguity that owen is suffering, basically the whole time.
we dont find out any answers about tara (i assume is her name) after she leaves and we're left to wonder if she was right, in the sense that the film makes you puzzle out precisely how literal its being. we know emotionally that she is. but in an up to this point mostly realistic setting, how can that be true? when what she is asking is so terrifying, is certain death? what are we as viewers supposed to take as fact?
all of these internal questions i had as i was watching are mirrored in owens experience of the story. the only difference is that i'm asking what the movie is saying is true, and owen is searching for concrete answers in their actual life.
i could find the screenplay and pore over it and go back through every frame and still not ever find a Yes or a No in the text. similarly, owen finds no solution no matter how constantly they think back to their feverish brush with authenticity in high school. the show that inspired them is left devoid of the intrigue they once saw in it. media can show you a potential way forward, but it will not make this decision for you.
'there is still time' is a shot from before the timeskip, left 20 years back from the end of the film. by the time the movie was over, it left me wondering about what the text was saying--is there still time? even now? was that assurance a relic from a time before owen trapped themself further into routine? does it even matter that they still have static buzzing in their chest if they then close it back up and pretend it isnt there?
the movie doesnt tell us. it cant tell us. we, like owen, are left adrift within our own horrifying, conscious agency over the question.
we have to find out if its too late on our own.
#i saw the tv glow#i Really like this movie its so fun to think about#i think i like it more now for mulling it over than i did right after viewing. id be interested to catch it again i think#TONS to dig into i can tell#meta

Hey, has anyone who's seen I Saw The TV Glow seen any good articles/posts discussing the themes of femininity/womanhood or specifically transfeminity in the movie? I want to read some analysis from that perspective but most of the analysis I can find is taking the approach of like, "transness" as an all-encompassing experience (or even from the experiences of trans men and non-binary people) & I think I'd really like to read something specifically focused on that aspect considering the protagonist is transfem herself
#i saw the tv glow#scenes like owen's unwillingness to appraoch his father & the whole dynamic of discovery through a 'girls' tv show with the pink opaque#present a really interesting narrative abt feminity specifically but i cant find anyone digging into it#like the situation here is that by searching i saw the tv glow transfem i found 3 people come out as transmasc which like. congrats king bu#im dying here. i guess most people who think theyre cis men arent really gonna watch a movie with a reputation for being transgender#two more things: the movie is absolutely about being autistic as well but its about being trans AND autistic theres no interpretation of#this film that ignores that. you can't say this is 'about autism' this is about being a trans woman with autism#& also interesting themes of infantilization w/ transitioning presented as a childish idea by society via pink opaque being a kids show#isabella buried in overalls#self-discvovery during a sleepover#much to think about#ANYWAYS rambly tags over#transfem#trans woman#<--- is this the tag ppl use. hello

sometimes i think about how wild a mw2 movie would be if they just dropped soapghost right in the middle with no warning or marketing. like imagine it being beat for beat the exact same, it’s your typical military action movie, promoted as just another military action movie then after they get to the safe house, ghost has to patch up soap and he’s still out of it, overwhelmed by the betrayal and everything he’s seen and ghost needs to ground him and keep him in the present, to remind him that he’s alive and safe so he kisses him and they have sex. the tantrums and the rants and the “ReAl sOLdiErS aRen’t liKe ThAt”, god i can taste it and it’s delicious
#theres never any talk of a relationship or sexuality crisis its just this moment of humanity and comfort to bring soap back to himself#real any time you need me by thirteenbullets vibes#theyre not the type of men to have something as normal as a relationship#theyre just everything to each other they know that and its enough#ghost can be such a complex character if you let him#this guy whos rejected his humanity has buried himself and become a ghost#willingly digging himself out of the grave to stop soap from digging his own#like how are there not more explicitly homoerotic military movies that actually pull the trigger (heh) on the homo part of the eroticism#you know how if movies have even a hint of queerness they wring it out for every drop of respresentation they can get#theres a hundred articles and its mentioned in every interview and it all journalists ask those actors#imagine it being a complete secret and everyone expects just a typical action movie#then boom battle buddy gay sex#like if it were a male and fenale character you would see that scene coming a mile away so why cant it happen with two guys#just doing it is the only way of normalising it#i still see men saying they act like brothers which is denial so strong even egypt is impressed#but imagine the general public expecting this manly man military movie then getting hit with the alone mission flirting and denying it#then getting smacked in the face with tender wound care and grounding love making initiated by the edgelord they were using as a self inser#coming out of my cage and ive been doing just fine.txt#soapghost#ghostsoap#ghoap#john soap mactavish#soap cod#simon ghost riley#ghost cod#cod mw2#we’re a team. ghost team

ok as someone who doesn’t really care for musical beetlelands (don’t get me wrong i understand what the appeal is and it’s a fine ship)
i LOOOVE what u r saying about movie beetlelands. something about that dynamic just sounds… chefs kiss. thanks for opening my eyes
THANK YOU!!!!!! I'm so glad you agree and I am going to rant about movie Beetlands now
Okay first of all, Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin are both 6'0, and Micheal Keaton is 5'9, so........ the icky man is shorter than both of them /pos
I'm going to be real I think Moviejuice is a real shitty guy, he was alive in the 1300s so I'm sure he's misogynistic, womanizing, homophobic, transphobic, etc. But just like the other two juices I still headcanon him as pansexual and genderfluid. So, the beetlands relationship would force him to face those biases. (I also headcanon the Maitlainds as T4T and bi because I am cringe what did u expect)
Speaking of biases and generally being a mischievous and evil creature, I know that Barbara would put him in his place and no way in hell would he not listen to a beautiful women if she told him what to do. He'd try to convince the Maitlainds otherwise but he absolutely loves being bossed/dragged around because he is sick and vile and silly.
I love movie Maitlainds so so so so much like, Barbara seeing Delia talk about changing their house and going "I'm gonna get her." THEY'RE SO FUNNY and so madly in love they make me sick..... like the scene where they were sitting on the couch and the phone was ringing but everytime one stood up to get it the other pulled them back and they smooched while giggling like ARE YOU KIDDING ME.
Ummmm also *because* of that I also like the idea of Beetlejuice being the recipient of that affection... listen he would have to earn it first but also I can't stop thinking about that evil creepy icky guy being faced with cuddles and kisses and pretending he doesn't like it because he's totally above all that and love is for losers. But *also* relationships totally are NOT unfamiliar territory for him he's like super experienced totally wdym.
He would be a cool weird uncle figure for Lydia hjahxjaodbabdjcjejahcjsofbsbsbajcjajdhakrhcbabd and Lydia would make him realize he's genderfluid sorry I don't make the rules
I NEED TO BEAT HIM UP GRAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He would like it.
I hate that thing guys so much horrible character I get no enjoyment from his stupid face and I totally don't think about him 24/7 mhm yeah.
#Oughhhhh#beetlejuice#keatlejuice#moviejuice#beetlejuice 1988#beetlands#movie beetlands#beetlelands#movie beetlelands#why are there so many different spellings of the same ship name#I'm not ok#graghh#I don't think he would go soft exactly#I think he'd be just as creepy and mischevious in that relationship#he would just be more comfortable giving/receiving affection and#sharing the unpredictable and vicious sides of himself that he normally conceals unless it benefits him in some way#I need to dig around in his psyche

from the moving picture world magazine, november 1920
transcript under cut
transcript:
Buster Keaton Disregards Birthday to Finish Film
Buster Keaton spent his birthday working before the camera in the closing scenes of his fourth two-reel comedy, "Neighbors". Buster is serious in his occupation of making people laugh, and a long October day in California was coming to a close before the nimble comedian remembered that it was the occasion of his twenty-fifth anniversary, but he refused to doff his makeup and comedy clothes until the last scene was "shot".
That evening, however, Buster was the guest of honor at a birthday party given by his parents, Joseph and Myra Keaton, in their residence in the Hollywood picture colony. The elder Keatons and Buster made up the famous knockabout comedy team of the Three Keatons in vaudeville.
At Buster's birthday party the entire personnel of his studios, from Lou Anger, business manager for Joseph M. Schenck, down to the office boy, Luke McGluke, was present. Other guests were Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, the Metro stars, Viola Dana and Alice Lake; Shirley Mason, Miss Dana's sister; Lew Cody and Bernard Durning.
#more stuff from my camera roll! i had a couple of articles#i think like three of them? so yeah i'll post/transcribe them all#also please appreciate these posts#i just had the screenshots of the articles in my camera roll so i had to dig through the internet archives to find the original sources 😭😭#buster keaton#joe keaton#myra keaton#roscoe arbuckle#viola dana#alice lake#lew cody#bernard durning#silent movies#silent film#1920s#old hollywood

When my interest shifts from one to another I don’t start disliking/hating the old one
It just slips into being dormant until something inevitably triggers monkey brain about it again
#for instance! I am likely going to be annoying as shit once professor layton nwos comes out!#I do have old PL ocs to dig out to redesign#two of them survived past my PL interest! (cateyes and Naro)#but the rest faded into obscurity#namely Abigail and Cosmo#I kinda dodged getting SUPER back into lmk when the last season came out#but that’s because I caught covid 0.2 seconds after I watched it JGSHFKFH#I’m trying to think of more recent ones#trolls!! is one of them! I DO still love those movies#but I have a huge dislike towards my own ocs for them so?? bramble is likely dead unless I give him a major redesign#(where he would not be a troll anymore)#uh… psychonauts! I have exactly one (1) psychonauts oc and it’s a sona#I would likely only get back into that if I decided to replay the games or they made a 3rd game#currently ace attorney owns my brain! and I am!!! struggling with making fan art for that JGSHFJJD#I feel like I’m not allowed because I’ve only ever played up to the second game#I don’t know who apollo justice or trucy wright is#I only have knowledge of phoenix’s disbarment via osmosis#who the fuck is godot. why does he throw coffee at phoenix.#i dont know

the ending of i saw the tv glow fucked me up because in a meatphor sense she's going to spend the rest of her life in misery because she was too afraid to embrace her true self. her happy self. and in a literal sense she's LITERALLY being buried alive which is like top 100 fears of mine and the fact her inhaler stopped working which is like. the sign that she's losing oxygen kept me up at night. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAA
Ourgh yeah the burying alive is. Fucked up if real! But personally I've said before but I do see the ending as not Great but at least hopeful, I think even if she doesn't accept herself right away she's going to at least try to like, find people who can help her, because she is screaming for help at the end, even if no one responds. And that's much better than suffering in silence. At least, that's if you assume her life outside the Pink Opaque is real in some way, which tbh I do. I think even if she were to bury herself like Tara, it wouldn't perfectly put her in Isabel's body, and she wouldn't be young again. Idk I'll say that I think the world of ISTTVG is supernatural and sitting within unreality rather than full fantasy, and neither The Pink Opaque or "Real Life" is fully true. I think they blur together one way or another
#ISTTVG spoilers#I saw the TV glow spoilers#This is heavily theoretical but I think Tara sorta. Didn't choose the best option. I think the MC was too afraid but Tara was too#Idk. She was too ready to basically die for what she thought was the truth. I think the idea of the MC being Isabel FROM TPO is not the bes#Like. Movie message as someone who has been deeply fixated on things + specific characters to the point I was filtering almost all of my#Thoughts through them. So I think the best case is for the MC to understand how much she wants to be Isabel or wanted to be#And let herself feel that without shame while also becoming her own person. Does that make sense?#I think the ending is less her losing air underground and more just. The breaking point of something. And I do think Mr melancholy is uh#Doing some shit in both realms but maybe not specifically the way the show plays out? Idk I have thoughts but they're a mess#Also I wonder if someone could say something about the moon being traditionally feminine and the villain being a masculine form of the moon#Tho the man in the moon isn't like a new concept I still think there's something worth digging into there but Idk enough to do it myself lo

I like working in silence
TV is terribly distracting, same with YouTube videos. Even if it's something I don't necessarily find interesting I end up getting Sucked In. Music is less distracting, though I'm finding myself listening to new (to me) music vs my typical go to as it's not as mentally imprinted. I am VERY serious about my daydreaming to music and I tend to cycle through the same scenarios or animation ideas like a pathway of sorts when I've become familiar with a song.
sewing and crochet are very hard to do without my entire concentration, though I find drawing to be less "painful" to multitask to...yet here we are crocheting during a movie
#melloof#idk what anyone here is gonna do with this info but hello#I'm currently watching a documentary on Depeche Mode#this movie is making the 80s look fucking amazing btw#I rarely watch nonfiction from this decade but maybe I'll dig around for some more music documentaries cus wow the fashion and the Vibes

grabs the microphone....hello...everyone...I'd like to show you my pride and joy....Hal Jordan.
Btw don't mind how it looks, I'm still figuring out how to work Clip Studio Paint (VERYYY WEIRD). So these are test drawings yummyuymym
Barry: "Heyyy <33" (While also doing the worst winks throughout history. Barry Allen CANNOT wink, only when he's acting cocky.)
Hal: "Bar, We've been dating for 5 years. Hiii <3" (Dear GODD he's so bad at flirting...I need him)
This drawing is an example of Barry before getting with Hal. Iris showed him one of those extremely corny romance movies (I am such a fan of them and I have an entire list of those movies) and then he started daydreaming one day at a JL meeting because the members were talking about movies (they got off track and Bruce had to clear his throat to get their attention).
I also got reminded of the song 'Just Some Guy' from Dead End Paranormal Park and went WILD. You could guess where this is going.....looking over to HalBarry and grabs them
#UHHHHH FUCK#speedster ramble#my art#dooddddddlleee??#hal jordan#barry allen#halbarry#VERY MUCH HALBARRY RELATED WHO AM I KIDDING#i am normal about them SOOO HARD (no I'm not...)#iris for sure digs those corny romance movies but NOT those hallmark movies...no#more like Serendipity (i fucking love that film....ITS SO???#the most useless headcannon i have is Iris being a huge fan of movies containing cusacks and she loves dragging barry to the movies#minor mention of iris west here#mostly in the tags#green lantern#dc
