Hi ! For the not from the us ask game, could you do 4, 10 and 24 ?
Thank you for the ask <3
4. favourite dish specific for your country?
Tumblr media
Fisherman's soup (Halászlé)
It's a typical christmas soup here made from carp or catfish, and depending on which part of the country you live in, it's served with noodles OR bread. I prefer it with noodles AND bread. There. I said it.
Depending on taste and the type of hungarian red pepper you use, it can be mild or really spicy too. But also this is a dish you can ruin multiple ways and the result is often decided at where you buy the fish. It's on my bucketlist to learn how to make this dish but first I need to learn how to prepare a fish for consuption and I'm still scared of that. .___.
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
The amount of time I want to yell GECI (slang for cum) in the tags!!!
It can be used for various situations, you can call - but not recommended unless you are friends, and sometimes even then it is considered rude - people that, you use it as conjunction, dramatic interjection at the end of the sentences, or when you want to emphasise something. Depend on context it can be used for positive interjection too but not in formal situations, of course. It's similiar when you use "fuck" in english, you can use it quite creatively. Because of its derogatory nature personally I don't like to use it in smut unless it's for dialogue and dirty talk.
Here is some example.:
Gecire fáj a fejem. - I have a big headache. (EDIT: I accidently quoted Echo here in english and I'm laughing my ass off, him saying something like this XDDD)
Takarodj a gecibe! - Get the fuck out of here!
Geci, nézd már azt a csajt! - Oh fuck, look at that girl!
GECCCC!!! :DDDD - Your cat has the zoomz on, misses a jump and in their really clumsy way of holding onto something, they make the whole living room descending into pure chaos.
I just looked into the origins of the world and... holy shit it used to be petname for the name Gergely (Gregory)??? XDDD I think the verb-form "gecizik" existed before using it as a derogatory noun, in the context of "a person who pesters someone", so definitely not someone pleasant to be around.
My other favorite form of swearing when you don't say a single swearword but curse people to the other end of the galaxy. My Commander Fox is very much like this actually, only he curses you AND swears a lot, but I just don't have the adequate vocabulary in english to translate the energy well. :((( No unhinged chaotic Fox for the fandom. :((((
Thank your coming my very important hungarian language lesson, I hope I represented our people well. :DDDD
24. what other nation is joked about most often in your country?
Hmm... I really have mixed feelings about this question due to our recent political affairs and how our country transformed into it's very worse self in tha past decade. I don't think our country has the right to make joke of the "rotten west" when we are the cess-pool of Central-Europe with our armchair fascist dictator. Those aren't even jokes anymore because people are complete serious about them and it makes it even scarier.

"It's about American media drowning out native language media all over the world, and workplaces requiring the English language in your repertoire more and more. It's about proper translations and foreign language dubbing of films disappearing because "everyone speaks/should speak English anyway." All of this is leading to the deterioration of native speaker groups of languages worldwide."
This reminded me of that video these greek voice actors posted a few years ago
youtube
Basically, what they're saying is that they have raised a few generations, and now they are losing their jobs
The thing with Greece is they don't really dub stuff. Never. ONLY CARTOONS.
I've been hearing of other countries watching stuff -literally any kind of movie- in their language and I'm like YOU CAN DO THAT?!
Greece only dubs cartoons or movies/shows that are FOR KIDS literally nothing else
Anything else is subtitles
And the thing is we had GOOD translations
Pun, jokes, places and people translated to match OUR COUNTRY stuff we knew
Barbie shopping at Kolonaki is one example I can think of
And yeah it's late I can't think much go to Neverlander's yt channel I'm sure he has a video about good jokes in translations
OH WAIT My favorite the para pente reference on Meet the Robinsons, when the translators (or maybe the VA for that one) completely changed something bc hey, this is funnier here, and they were right
The problem is, some translations stopped being good enough, and my generation grew up, and watched stuff in English bc English is cool and greek is cringe
So after consuming English media for too long, greek seemed awful to a lot of people
And I know some people were being overdramatic for no reason
Example: I put on Scooby-Doo to watch with a friend, he went "EW NO ITS IN GREEK. CRINGE. I CANT. I WOULD NEVER SEE IT IN GR- *realizes when he was watching Scooby-Doo as a kid he wasn't speaking English and he was watching on greek television and didn't have much of an option* oh wait I have. Ok whatever🙄😒"
LIKE MY BROTHER IN CHRIST- CHILL ΑΛΛΙΩΣ ΘΑ ΣΟΥ ΒΑΛΩ ΤΗΝ ΤΥΠΙΣΣΑ ΠΟΥ ΧΑΝΕΙ ΤΟ ΚΑΠΕΛΑΚΙ ΤΗΣ ΣΤΟ ΠΟΡΤΛΑΝΤ SCOOBY-DOO IS FINE
And if we all end up hating the translations for no reason they're just gonna make them worse since the only people who care are 5 year olds
At this point ppl don't even give a chance on translations
Or greek media itself, I remember when I recommended Maestro in blue to my friend she was mad it was greek, sure that it was gonna be awful
She liked it.
"Ew it's greek I won't go near it"
Why? A lot of people are like that. Why?
We speak in greek, communicate and all but your internet experience is full of English
And also texting, I would be lying if I said I didn't have greek friends who ONLY text in English for some reason and then I feel weird about texting then in greek so we communicate in English on the phone like foreigners
Also back to the translation thing "I can't read a book in greek I won't understand it" <- person with the most greekish islandish accent I've met that got an 11 on the English Panhellenic exams👁👄👁
I got a 17.7 and let me tell you I do hold Google translate near me when reading in English
The thing is, maybe the translation wasn't good?
I cringed at TBDATE for using the word "κριντζαρω" but it'd be a lie if I said my generation isn't using that word
DO NOT LET SOCIAL MEDIA TURN YOU INTO AN AMERICAN

Bridging Cultures: Expert Strategies for English to Malayalam Translation
Languages are very important for helping people from different countries talk to each other and understand each other in our linked world. English to Malayalam Translation is a great example of this because it brings together a world language with a lively regional language that has a rich literary history. But it takes more than just switching words to make a version that is correct and responsive to different cultures. Here, we’ll talk about how experts turn translations from physical tasks into ways for people from different cultures to meet.
Understanding the Nuances: Why Literal Translations Fall Short
The beautiful thing about language is that it can express more than just the basics of thoughts and feelings. Malayalam is hard to translate because it has its own grammar system and puts a lot of stress on rhythm and flow. A direct translation from English can often get things wrong by:
Losing Subtleties: There are different ways to say things in English and Malayalam. If the text is translated directly, it might lose some of its subtleties, making it boring to read for people who speak Malayalam.
Missing Cultural References: Languages are deeply connected to the groups that speak them. If jokes, metaphors, and references that are unique to English society are translated word-for-word, they might not make sense to people who read in Malayalam.
Grammatical Mismatches: Malayalam and English sentence order are not always the same. Malayalam lines that are too close to the original English word order can sound strange and not natural.
Building Bridges: Strategies for Effective English to Malayalam Translation
To close these holes and give people a real Malayalam experience, translators can use a variety of useful techniques, such as
Context is King: Before starting to translate, it’s important to fully understand the background of the original text. This includes the target, the goal, and any culture parallels. With this information, the translation can pick the best Malayalam words and phrases that will connect with the audience.
Equivalence over Equality: Translators shouldn’t try to match words for words; instead, they should aim for practical equality. This means coming up with Malayalam phrases that have the same effect and meaning as the English text. You could think of it as catching the “spirit” as well as the message.
Embrace the Flow: Rhythm and flow are very important in Malayalam. A good translator should pay attention to the rhythm of the original text and try to make the Malayalam version sound like the English one. To do this, you might have to rearrange words, pick synonyms based on how they sound as well as their meaning, and use Malayalam’s large vocabulary of expressive verbs and adjectives.
Embrace Creativity: When there is no straight Malayalam word or phrase for an English term or idea, skilled translators don’t hesitate to come up with something new. They could use existing Malayalam proverbs or metaphors that mean the same thing, or they could come up with their own words that are culturally acceptable and capture the spirit of the original text.
Research is Your Friend: Technology can be useful, but you still need to do a lot of study. To make sure that scientific words and cultural references are translated correctly, it is important to use dictionaries, glossaries, and subject-specific tools.
Embrace Collaboration: When working on big projects together, interpreters and experts in the subject can be very helpful. This makes sure that the translated work correctly conveys the intended meaning and uses the right terms for that field.
Beyond Accuracy: The Power of Culturally Sensitive Translation
Being true isn’t enough to make a translation truly powerful. Cultural awareness is very important to make sure that the translation work hits home with the Malayalam audience:
Preserving Cultural Identity: Authentic versions make sure that more people can read Malayalam literature, poems, and other cultural gems without losing their beauty or meaning.
Accurate Information Dissemination: Making sure that knowledge is available in many languages helps people understand each other better in a worldwide world. Correct versions make sure that people who speak Malayalam get correct information that fits their culture.
Building Bridges of Empathy: Translations that are sensitive to different cultures can help break down walls and build understanding between them. We can better understand how people from different backgrounds think and feel if we know how language works.
The Future of English to Malayalam Translation
Working together is the key to the future of English to Malayalam Translation. Even though machine translation tools are getting better all the time, they still have trouble with the subtleties and idioms of human language. Translations that are both effective and respectful of both cultures will be made possible by skilled interpreters who have a strong knowledge of both languages and cultures. New technologies will also help with this. They will help people understand each other better and make the lives of both Malayalam speakers and people who want to learn more about Malayalam culture better.

1. what are 3 things you’d say shaped you into who you are?
first and most important thing would be learning english at the age 12... because it truly opened so many opportunities it's crazy. being able to access the information from such many international sources and to read the points of view of everyone who too can speak english really broadens your horizons for sure. especially when you're from a rather small country :') not to mention all the books that are either extra expensive to get here or there are simply no translations available..... so yeah learning it so early was literally life-changing
second one.. or rather someone is my philosophy teacher from high school. at that time i saw a lot of myself in him and it gave me a much needed peace of mind that ppl like me can truly live the life that gives them happiness. philosophy was his true life passion and his lectures were filled with so much emotion and excitation, it was really freeing to see him talk so openly about something he loves and being madly respected by us for it. his second love was exactly one particular mountain range which he called his lover and hearing him talk about it too was wonderful... and he loved working with teens and was the most respectful adult towards them i have ever met, plus his honest curiosity towards what we think and wanting to truly understand what we mean were a very good lesson for learning patience and respect for others even if u think at first they're talking bullshit. i could talk abt him for hours so let's just summ up that seeing an adult aspie being happy and content with his life really gives you hope for the future when you're an angsty teen haha
three hmmm the plague dogs. especially the movie because i still can't bring myself to actually read the book ending [*] but the ending is one of the reasons why i find it so important <3 because this book/movie shaped a lot of my art preferences and art is important for me sooo... it has just the right level of anthropomorphication, dogs don't behave like they're literal people put into canine bod, as it sadly feels to me in most of the media, but there's this nice blend of dog and human way of thinking and perceiving the world. very interesting! the characters' relationships, the way snitter's hallucinations are described in the book, voice acting in the movie... and the ending feels like a perfect tragedy for me, meaning that i really can't see their fates ending in any other way they end. and i love a good tragedy haha, all enormously inspiring when it comes to creating my own works too <3
17. name 3 things that make you happy
1 dogs always forever.. my own dog, all the dogs i've ever known and formed a relationship with, learning about them in any way, observing them irl and on the vids other people take and share, talking about them, everything <333
2 birch trees, the amount of happiness i feel each and single time i see them is incomparable ;;❤️ i need to hug a birch really soon or i'll go crazy and i'm not joking
3 nature simply and living in city after many many years by the forest and meadows and in the quiet really made appreciate it even more. i've seen people calling it "small" joys in the "mundane" but for me it's truly big and special. rays of sunlight, the grass, the wind, the animals, everything... anything you can experience with any of your senses. if i had to define the meaning or the sense of my life it's experiencing as much of nature as i can <3 nothing heals more
38. fave song at the moment?
youtube
there's even a decent translation, would only change "not so much" into "so little" just for it to sound better, the meaning is the same. it may be corny or whatever, i didn't find such themes very personal in the past but a war in a neighboring country changes many things in one's perception of the world. it somehow comforts me these days :)

1/27/2023 DAB Chronological Transcription
Genesis 43-45
Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible Chronological, I'm China. Today is the 27th day of January. Welcome. So great to be here with you today. Today we continue on in our story, a very heated story. What is going to happen next? Well, we continued on today with Genesis, chapters 43 through 45 and this week with in the Common English Bible.
Commentary:
The famine. Yeah, no joke when Jacob is saying, this is too much for me. This is a great story of reconciliation and redemption through the ward. And the heart posture that Joseph has is so impressive to me and so inspiring and encouraging because he has been enslaved, he has been a prisoner wrongfully. And now he is over charge of the harvest and the plentiful. And in this time of famine, which was a great stressor on all those surrounding towns and countries, and he is put in charge of this, which is a very big deal. I don't even know the equivalent of how he could translate that in today's time, but he's got a really big job. And all of this is because his heart has been faithfully with the Lord and I'm so impressed by that. But then how he's handling his brothers, not just one who's done him wrong, but ten who have done him wrong, and ten men, and then you reveal yourself to them and his responses, don't be too hard on yourselves because what you meant for evil, actually the Lord used it for good. I don't know how many times I've had that heart response. Do something much less on the scale that he has experienced. And so that encourages my heart to move into a place of forgiveness and quick forgiveness. And I think sometimes we, yes, feel your emotions, and I'm not sure what emotion he felt, but he was weeping a couple of different times. And so you can tell that he's overcome by emotion and what emotions those were, I'm not sure, but I feel like we could all have some pretty solid guesses. But then for him to say, don't be too hard on yourselves. I know that you meant this for evil, but the Lord used it for good. And now I'm in a place where I can make sure that you guys are taken care of and make sure that our father's taken care of. And again, that is the forgiveness heart motive. His heart is rooted in forgiveness and it's not in this. I'm going to let you suffer. I'm going to let you I'm going to give you this silent treatment. I'm going to make you feel my wrath. Walk on eggshells around me. I feel like sometimes you're like, okay, I'm going to forgive you in like three years or in like 30 minutes or whatever. And I'm not sure that I believe that. The Lord has said hate. We are called to forgive, forgive each other as Christ Jesus has forgiven us. And in some parts of scripture. It says that if we don't forgive, our sins aren't forgiven. And so I think the timeline of how we forgive is important. I used to think maybe it wasn't, but okay, I'm going to forgive you eventually, but not right now. Whereas Joseph here, he's feeling his emotions. Like, I'm learning the art of regulating your emotions and to do the breathwork and to really feel what you need to feel, kind of let those emotions pass through your body and regulate back to yourself and then to make decisions or talk after you're back to being regulated. And so I feel like Joseph going and stepping aside for a second and feeling what he needs to feel and crying and getting it all out and then coming back and then having these discussions feels like very similar to regulating your emotions, coming back and then being able to have a sound mind to respond with. But anyways, I'm learning that. I'm seeing the value in it and watching how differently conversations go when you respond from a regulated response. And I think that these are psychological, therapeutic practices, but I think that if the capital C Church can really grasp hold of these things, we know so much about ourselves and realize that the Lord is in those things as well. And he's not asking us to do things that he wasn't willing to do, but also that he wouldn't give us the tools to learn to do, if that makes sense. Because sometimes we can say through gritted teeth, I forgive you, or we can say, I forgive you, and it doesn't really do anything. Or we're like, waiting for forgiveness to come on, like an emotion that takes over our body, and we're like, oh, I don't have to do any hard work, I just forgive, like, hallelujah, which I feel like can happen. I've recently experienced that where I was like, yeah, I feel like maybe I should have what's the word I'm looking for? Like a grudge. But actually I just release you. I just release you. I forgive you, and I'm moving on. And I was kind of like, okay, I wasn't expecting that. I was expecting to be upset for a little bit longer, but I think so. I think that sometimes it does happen, and I think other times we have to actively choose to forgive and to release and yeah, I don't know. I just think that there's a lot to learn in the forgiveness realm, but also a lot to learn and how to regulate ourselves. And so I'm learning the art of, like, deep belly breathing. Just a quick how. I mean, if we're if we're going to heal our bodies through, like, mind, body, spirit, then we can't neglect the body, right? Like, we can pray for a sound mind and renew our mind, but then we also need to do some practical things, too, is personally what I believe. And so if we do like, deep belly breathing that helps regulate our levels of serotonin, because there's more serotonin in our gut than there is in our brain. And so those neurotransmitters have to be firing at all cylinders. And so it's just important that we kind of have the whole picture. And I think once we have the whole picture, we realize that we're actually not crazy and realize, oh, there's just a missing step here. And so I don't know how those two fit together, but I feel like the host here was inviting me to sharing that. So I think if anything, let's take a few deep belly breaths. And so this is a good practice that I have been doing. If you put your hand on your stomach and put one on your chest, and then you can take like a deep breath and feel your stomach pull in. Like if you inhale, you feel it pull in and then exhale through your mouth and you can feel it expand. And really what that does is you're focusing on your breath. And when you focus on your breath, your mind can wander, but just gently bring it back. And when you focus on that, you can feel a difference in how centered you are versus a charged response to things. And so if we can practice this a few times a day, but then especially in those situations where it's like, oh, here's all ten of my brothers, here's my revenge. I'm selling you, I'm selling you, I'm selling you, I'm going to slaughter you, I'm going to blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, you again. I think that he responded because he had a solid relationship with the Lord and he really understood who the Lord was. But then I also think he did some practical steps of regulating his emotions before he responded. So I think that that is something that we miss, we overlook, and there's value in it. So take a few minutes deep belly breathe, and then we'll pray.
Prayer:
Father, I thank you that you know us, you have created us in Your image and you have called us good. And God, I pray that the words that Joseph spoke would reign true over ourselves, not to be too hard on ourselves, whether that is something that we receive over ourselves or something that we extend to others and that we would just be reminded that sometimes what man means for evil, the Lord works out for good. He intends for good. And I thank You, Lord, that you are the only one who can redeem you're, the only one who can restore you're the only one who can save. And so I pray that we would grasp that, that we would know that truth and that we would carry that with us. I think there's so much authority in the understanding of that. And I also pray God, that when we have those scenarios arise, because they will come. There may be one that happens later today. I pray that we would remember our breath, that we would remember our breath work to be able to pause and to invite you into the moment and just to focus on our breathing and remember that we are called to renew our mind and to renew our spirit. But we can't do that on our own. We have to ask you to do that. And I thank you that you're always willing and you're always able. And so I just thank you for this story, those little things that remind us that you are a God who cares. You are a God who knows his people and what they need. And I thank you that even just the little details today of the story, even Joseph having a moment to grieve or to cry or to process, to feel what he needed to feel and then come back and respond, god, I thank you that there's so much wisdom in that. And so Lord, I pray that you would remind us the value in the pause before the response. Lord, I just thank you for your word and it's in your name we pray. Amen.

Community Prayer Line:
Good morning DABC. This is TN and NC. First time I'm calling this year. Just like everyone else calling in. Thousands of us have been welcoming all the new members on the DAB and the DABC just want to say you've come to an awesome ministry. It's not just a podcast, it is a ministry. And you hopefully will remain a part of our family because we love all of you. We want to hear your prayers and we do pray for everyone. I just heard Tony and suffix call and I've been meaning to let you know that I had posted on Facebook DABC praying for someone else. And someone responded to me thinking I was you because my name is Tanya also. And of course, you know on Facebook you got your full name. But in any event, please know that I and many others are praying for you, praying for your family also. Heard you ask for a special prayer for Cameron. Certainly pray for all of your family and all of our children and grandchildren who are in college because I have three. Praise God. We've heard a lot of heart wrenching prayers already this year with a lot of circumstances that just aren't to the best. But then all of a sudden we get to hear from God, small and Peter, which gives us a kiss kiss and a lightness within the prayers. God bless all of you. Stick with this. Remember, you are to pursue God. As long as you have breath, you will never arrive, but you will always be able to learn and grow. God bless each and every one of you and you will hear from me again. I think this is my fifth year coming up in April. So to God be the glory for that and certainly for all of you. Thanks, Brian, Jill, China. Love you madly. Amen.
Good morning, DABC. This is Tonya calling from Suffolk. Today is Sunday, January 22. I just want to give you guys an update on my son Cameron finances for school. I was asking for prayer. He attends Norfolk State University down here in Norfolk, Virginia. And I'm just going to say God is great, he is greatly seen. Praise. All things have been worked out for the glory of God. My son finances has been taken care of for this semester. Even his housing is just covered 100%. So once again, I just wanted to give you guys an update and I had no doubt that God would not do exactly what he said he would do. And once again, as trust and believer in just going forward his rest of the years while he's in college that God has already opened up doors, he will be overflowed with abundance finances to allow him to continue his studies in school. And I just want to let you guys know he is going for psychology, he wants to be a counselor and also he's working on his bachelor's right now. When that's complete, he wants to pursue his masters. So once again, I thank you guys so much for the prayers and I just love you all. Just continue being covered. You guys have a wonderful day.
Hey DAB family, I am begging you to stand with me in prayer. I have recently become aware that my good friend, I'm going to call her Taylor, has been a victim of sex trafficking. And the more I learn, the bigger and more horrific it all becomes. This is apparently human trafficking prevention month and yet I have never heard a single mention of it anywhere. So I'm asking the DAB community to please, please pray against this evil. Pray for deliverance, pray for safety, for protection. I know what's going on in my community. Most people are completely unaware and yet it's just horrible. So pray for spiritual freedom, pray for protection, pray for changed hearts and please pray for my friend and for me. Thanks.
Hi. DABC family. This is Sarah. I've been a part of this community since China started it. I think this is the 6th year, if I'm counting right. And I really loved the mother daughter tag team the last year. And no all enjoy it again. I don't call in hardly ever, but I am indeed prayer and intervention. My husband and I have known each other for nine and a half years and been married for just over six. He battled bipolar and depression and it was something that, before I met him, I had never experienced firsthand in this way. Not firsthand through him. For the most part. It had been pretty even keel, pretty easy. There were moments here and there over the time, but not bad. But the last six months have been a true challenge for him and in turn for me. Just not knowing what to do, how to do it, what to say, when to say it, how to say it. Anytime we try to discuss it, I just ask questions out of I don't understand and it turns into a fight. He's trying to work on getting different medications because whatever he's been taking is not working. His anxiety is through the roof, which is making me extremely anxious as well. And we just need prayer. We have to go to his daughter's wedding in Australia in two weeks and both of us are on edge about the thought of that. Please pray for us, family. Thank you.

Ok I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I'm just now copying your Norwegian Bella AU into a text translator, and if you don't already have 50 people in your inbox demanding a translation then shame on ALL OF US because this is glorious! And while Google Translate does have a certain charm (it translated "piper hun ut" as "she beeps") I'm curious to see how you'd put it in English.
Troquantary is referring to this post. In which Bella doesn't speak English.
Fun fact, you're the only one who's gone into my inbox to request this. I was so sad, had the translation half-written and everything, but I was too proud to beg. So thank you, Troquantary, for popping this ask.
As for the dictionary fuckups, sounds about right. I made a few typos, too, that made Google Translate suffer even more. (Such as managing to mix up "henne" (her) and "hendene" (hands), resulting in Aro patting Bella instead of clapping his hands. Poor Google.)
Also, there are a few cultural references and language things that would be lost in the translation, in an attempt to keep them I included notes clarifying things.
Some things, like Aro and Carlisle's very old man way of speaking, are easier said than done to translate, you'll have to bear with me there.
Additional notes are that I added a few things to this version, many of them because translating is hard, but a few because while translating I thought "oh you know what would be much funnier-" and then wrote that.
Alright, without further ado:
When Renée left Charlie she did not go to Florida, she went to Oslo. And she went all in to make her daughter a true Norwegian, hiring Norwegian nannies and making sure never to speak English around the child. Since transatlantic flights are expensive, little Bella Swan rarely got to visit her father, and as such she never did learn what should have been her native language.
She quickly forgot what English she did have in favor of Norwegian, with the exception of words like “Yes”, “No”, and “I’m Bella”.
The few trips she took to visit her father were all the more awkward than in canon since she couldn’t play with the Black kids. Let not the blame fall upon Charlie: he took Norwegian classes and speaks conversational Norwegian. He can’t speak to Renée, because her Norwenglish is incomprehensible even to Norwegians, but he can communicate with Bella.
Not that he’s had a lot of chances to do so.
Bella makes it to seventeen years old, she’s in second grade at Handels* and is a major outsider among the preps there, and then Renée marries a handsome skier**. Together they shall travel the continent all winter to participate in as many skiing races as they can, and in the summer they’ll take gigs at Hurtigruta to see the coast.
*“Handels” is the nickname for an Oslo high school infamous for its pupils being rich and beautiful blonds who are going to be CEOs when they grow up.
**Skiing as a sport is huge in Norway
***Hurtigruta is a famous ferry that travels across the Norwegian West coast
Bella, who sucks at skiing and is too young to work at Hurtigruten, takes the hint.
With dread in her stomach and dictionary in hand she goes to her father in America.
Where she doesn’t speak the language.
Faen.
Charlie gives her a car, and I wish this meta was set in the present because I could have joked about electric cars and the automat only driver’s license*, but Twilight is set in 2005 so I can’t. The car part proceeds without drama.
*An increasing number of Norwegian youth take the driver’s license for automatic cars only, and we’re the country in the world with the highest percentage of electric car purchases.
School is worse than in canon, because she is now a thousand times more sensational than if she was merely the new student. She is from another country! All of Forks keels over with excitement.
To make matters even worse, our girl doesn’t understand a word of what people are saying.
She is too awkward to let them know she doesn’t know English. It’d become a thing, and they might think she’s dumb. To be fair, it’s not good that she’s been through primary, secondary, and now a year and a half of high school and still sucks at English.
So she nods, smiles, mumbles “Hi, I’m Bella” to the new faces, and blushes heavily when anybody says anything.
People assume she’s shy. That’s a bit boring, but oh well.
She has her biology class with the redhead hottie she noticed during lunch. She watched him and his family, they were fascinatingly pretty, but she doesn’t know anything more about them. Sure would have been great if she could have asked the tiny girl (was it Jess?) about them.
Biology proceeds as in canon - Edward badly wants to eat the delicious girl, but fortunately doesn’t.
She runs into him in the office when he tries to switch to another biology lesson, but she has no idea what he’s saying so she only has the suspicion that this somehow concerns her. Which is still uncomfortable, but Bella is probably the problem here. The hottie surely can’t be.
He’s missing from school for a week, Bella finds that weird.
He returns, and to her great horror he starts talking to her.
“Hello”, he says.
Bella dies inside. He’s too handsome!
"I'm Edward Cullen," he continues, and ok, she got that. The hottie is called Edward, that’s good to know. She’s not sure she caught that last name, though, Köln?
He says something else, it’s gibberish to Bella even though she’s concentrating, and at the end there he says “Bella Swan”.
She gulps.
"I'm Bella Swan," she confirms and nods. That should be correct. God, she hopes it’s correct.
He smiles a crooked, boyish smile. She’s awed. She didn’t think it was possible to be so beautiful.
He says something else.
Bella didn’t catch it.
She blushes even harder, she hasn’t been more embarrassed in her life. Here he is, the most handsome guy in all the world, and she has nothing to say to him. Literally, they don’t speak the same language.
She should tell him.
It’s one thing to chicken out of telling the town she doesn’t speak English, but there’s something different about Edward Cullen. He deserves the truth.
But...
He’s the most beautiful person she has seen in her life. He is American, too, so the odds of him knowing Norwegian are microscopical. If he finds out she doesn’t understand a word he says he’ll stop talking to her, and selfish as she is she doesn’t want that.
So with a slightly guilty conscience (but not enough to fess up) she contributes to the conversation with enough words and smiles to pull through. "Yes", "No", "Thank you", and "That's nice".
He is surprised by several of these answers, but instead of giving her odd looks and losing interest he grows more invested in the conversation.
Class ends.
The next day the near accident happens, and he saves her. She is stunned - dear god, did he just pick up a whole car? After teleporting across the parking lot..?
Soon she’s in the ER, and more than a little bit stressed about that fact since she knows the Americans have a terrible healthcare system.
She hopes Charlie has an insurance.
An insanely beautiful man walks into the ER, and Bella is shocked. He is just as handsome as Edward and Edward’s lunch friends!
He introduces himself as Carlisle Cullen, and Bella can only assume this is someone’s older brother. Possibly related to the blonde girl.
He smiles at her, says something, and she answers, "I'm Bella Swan."
He frowns.
That must have been the wrong answer, then.
His hands return to investigating her scalp, and to her great surprise he switches to perfect Norwegian, "kjenner De* noe ubehag når jeg holder her?" Do you feel any discomfort when I touch here?
*De is the Norwegian polite pronoun for “you”. Du = thou = the French tu, and De = you = the French vous. These polite pronouns went out of use in the 1980’s, save for when addressing royal persons, and would be considered antiquated in 2005.
He hurries to add, "Norsk lærte jeg i... fjor sommer. Det var et nettkurs." I learned Norwegian… last year. Online class.
"Hvilket da?" Which one? Bella asks, because Charlie needs to hear about this. The doctor has beautiful, if slightly outdated, pronunciation.
The doctor’s smile turns uncertain. She gets the feeling there’s something he doesn’t want to say. "Husker ikke," I don’t remember, sier han etter en litt vel lang pause.
That’s a shame. And weird.
"De hadde hellet med Dem i dag, som ikke ble truffet av den bilen." You were lucky today, not getting hit by that car. he then says, noticeably changing the subject.
"Det var ikke hell, det var Edward," It wasn’t luck, it was Edward, she replies sharply.
The doctor definitely looks uncomfortable.
She continues, "Han krysset skolegården på et blunk, og plukket opp hele bilen. Jeg så det," He crossed the schoolyard in a moment, and picked up the whole car. I saw it,
The doctor laughs. "Om han kunne det hadde nok gymkarakteren hans vært meget bedre. Nei, frøken Swan*, jeg beklager å si at det høres ut som at De er litt omtåket. Det er helt normalt ved hjernerystelse." If he could do that, his PE grade would be a lot better. No, Miss Swan, I’m sorry to say you seem confused. That’s normal with concussions.
*Addressing a young woman as “frøken” is even more outdated than using polite pronouns.
Why does Bella get the feeling he’s lying?
She’s discharged.
We’ll jump ahead to her trip to La Push - that trip uneventful, since Jacob knows she doesn’t speak English. They stick their hands in their pockets and stare at the sea.
The next day she’s shanghaied to Port Angeles, because apparently she said “Yes” at the wrong time when talking to Jessica (Turns out Jess’s name was Jessica!) and accidentally said yes to a day trip to Port Angeles.
Like in canon she wanders away from the others, and as in canon she is nearly gang raped. And again as in canon she is saved at the last moment by Edward.
He buys her dinner, and she can’t believe her own luck- and misfortune. A date with the most handsome guy on the planet (hence the luck) and she can’t say a word to him (hence the misfortune)!
He says things to her, lends her his jacket, and really this is it for Bella, she’s peaked, life can’t get better than this.
(That’s a lie, it would be better if she spoke English.)
He’s so amazing.
She’s gotten pretty good at navigating conversations with him, so she nods and aha’s her way through.
In his car on the way home the tone takes a more serious turn.
He asks her about something, and it’s a serious question, that much she’s gathered. She answers in the confirmative.
He is silent.
Did she say anything wrong?
(Edward, on his end, just asked if she knows what he is. She said yes, so calmly, not even a trace of fear in her.)
A few days later he takes her out on a walk in the woods.
He shows her a meadow in the woods, and when he steps into it he lights up in the sunlight.
Bella is in shock.
She knew there was something different about him, but- holy cow. This guy isn’t human.
Is she dating a god?
She stumbles into the clearing after him, and they spend a day together where he says things, and she can barely hear any of it (nevermind understand it) because she’s so distracted by how pretty he is.
The next day he takes her to a house in the middle of nowhere. She doesn’t want to guess that this can be where he lives. Surely gods don’t live in houses?
He shows her inside the house, and introduces her for Dr. Cullen and a lady with a name she doesn’t catch.
Bit weird that these two are acting like a couple of parents, they’re far too young and divine for that.
Edward shows her around in an old-fashioned office, and she doesn’t know what to make of i when she sees a painting of Carlisle. Edward launches into a long story when he sees her watching it, unfortunately she doesn’t catch any dates or artist names. At one point she heard the word “suicide”, though, and that’s not good.
She doesn’t get much out of the story.
The baseball game doesn’t happen because Bella didn’t pick up on what Edward wanted and didn’t realize she was being invited to a thing. They spend the afternoon watching a movie instead.
The relationship continues, impeded slightly by communication problems, but she’s mostly able to cover those up.
Until her birthday comes around.
She gets a papercut.
Jasper lunges at her. Edward throws her into a glass table, and then everyone is leaving.
Carlisle is kind enough to switch to Norwegian when he’s stitching up her arm, perhaps remembering the last time she was his patient. "Jasper har ikke vært på dietten vår så veldig lenge." Jasper hasn’t been on our diet for very long.
"Diett?"she asks. She’s never seen Edward eat anything. She wasn’t clear on what the Cullens ate, honestly she thought they were above such things. She was thinking maybe photosynthesis. The knowledge that they apparently eat food astounds her, but diets?
"Dyreblod istedenfor menneskeblod," Animal blood in stead of human blood, Carlisle clarifies.
Whachasay?
Carlisle gives a slight smile. “Jaspers liv som vampyr fikk en brutal start." Jasper’s life as a vampire got off to a brutal start.
...
Vampire?!
Bella’s missed something here.
Oh dear lord, oh fy faen, she has missed something.
“Åja”, uh huh, is all she can say, and suddenly she’s very aware of the fact that she’s sitting there with a bleeding arm.
And Carlisle.
Who is a vampire.
Over the course of the following conversation Bella makes a host of discoveries.
Edward has been a vampire this whole time, and he’s a telepathic vampire. Whether Bella should be a vampire too or not has been a matter of hot debate, but due to religious reasons Edward doesn’t want that.
Carlisle also brings up how Edward died of the Spanish flu.
"Jeg var under den oppfatning at Edward fortalte deg bakhistorien min?" I was under the impression Edward told you my back story? Carlisle asks at one point, and Bella just has to ask very nicely if he’d be so kind as to repeat it.
Turns out the guy is nearly four hundred years old.
Jaha.
Jahahaha jaa ha.
That’s… a lot.
She wanders out of the house in shock, and hardly notices Edward’s strange behavior over the next couple of days.
One day he picks her up at school, and takes her behind the house.
That works out.
He’s a vampire, but he never hurt her. He is endlessly beautiful, perhaps easier to love now that she knows he’s not a god. He’s her Edward, and that’s suddenly easier now that she knows.
They can still be together.
But now that she knows this about him, it’s about time he knows something about her as well.
It’s time to finally be honest with him.
So when he opens his mouth, she opens her mouth as well, but she doesn’t get any further than to “Edward-” before he launches into a monologue.
She’ll have to wait until he’s done before saying her piece. It’s a bit embarrassing, but it doesn’t seem like he intends to stop talking anyway.
And what he’s saying seems to be serious, so it’s probably best to let him finish.
Edward concludes his monologue by kissing her forehead. Then he disappears.
Where did he go?
A big unsure, Bella goes back to the house. She’ll just have to wait until he gets back.
She doesn’t know what to think when Charlie returns from work and tells her the Cullens have all left.
Oh, god.
Edward must have found out she doesn’t speak English.
She made a mockery of him.
He has every right to leave.
Knowing this doesn’t make it any easier to live with.
Bella sinks into a depression.
The hallucinations begin, as in canon, though Hallusinward speaks Norwegian. Thank god for small mercies.
The friendship with Jacob (dictionary in hand) blooms, as someone has to help her see those hallucinations.
The cliff diving happens, and Alice shows up. Bella’s not sure what this is about, but she has gotten good enough at English to know that something bad happened, and Alice wants them to do something.
She’s a bit surprised to find herself on a plane to Italy, though.
Alice tells her to “Run to Edward” and ok, she got that, actually.
So she saves Edward.
After that she’s taken into the sewer, which turns out to house dozens of vampires.
Bella, Edward, and Alice are received in some kind of hall, where an unusual vampire has quite a bit to say. She understands some of what he’s saying, at least the part about “la tua cantante”. She knows a bit about Italian, see, so she knows that he’s talking about a song now.
She wishes she knew the context.
At one point he takes her hand, and appears fascinated by it. She wonders if he’s a palmreader. Not very vampirey, but what does she know.
He asks her a question.
"Yes," she says.
Saying yes has gotten her this far, after all.
But when he lights up and claps his hands together, and Edward and Alice stare at her in shock and betrayal, she knows she must have said the wrong thing.
The two are dismissed from the room before Bella can do or say anything, she’s just listening to Edward make a racket outside in the hallway.
Not good.
The unusual vampire brings her further down in his sewer palace to a basement, and she is given comfortable clothes to wear.
This is getting terrifying.
The vampire leans towards her - and she chickens out.
"Jeg snakker ikke engelsk!" she squeaks. "Non habla ingles!" I don’t speak English.
Han stanser, og ser forvirret ut. "Que- Hva behager*?" I beg your pardon? spør han etter et øyeblikk.
*A very formal, and slightly outdated (you can use it, but people will think you’re putting on airs. And they will be right) way of saying “excuse me?”
Sobbing, Bella tells him the whole story, from how she didn’t want to be the weird kid in school to how she’s now somehow in Italy without knowing why nor what she just agreed to.
When she’s done the vampire starts laughing.
"Dette forklarer jo en hel del," This explains quite a bit, ler han. "Men, kjære Bella, jeg er redd det ikke endrer noe." But, my dear Bella, I’m afraid it changes nothing.
He tells her that she has agreed to serve him and his army of undead warriors into eternity.
Well fuck.
"Du skal få slippe det, når du ikke visste hva du samtykket til - men skjebnen din forblir den samme. Loven er loven." You’re released from that promise, as you didn’t know what you agreed to - but your fate remains the same. The law is the law.
After a moment of silence, during which she looks terrified, he hurries to add, "Vi har en lov. Du må bli en av oss." We have a law. You must become one of us.
A law that Bella Swan has to become a vampire?
People are finally speaking Norwegian, and Bella is still lost. And it’s too embarrassing to keep pestering this poor, polite man with questions.
So she nods.
He gives her a glittering smile, and bites her.
When she wakes, Aro offers her an English course. A language course that, naturally, leads to her staying in Volterra. Why not learn a few more languages while we’re at it, dearest Bella?
Some time later Edward breaks into Volterra to save his Rapunzel, only to barely recognize her now that she’s a vampire who says things. Lots of things, she talks all the time now. WHAT DID ARO DO TO HER.
Too mortified to admit that she never spoke English, Bella claims she’s been brainwashed.
Aro is having too much fun to correct her, and the whole sad affair sets off a regrettable flood of rumors.

The doorbell sound is a recording of Yoongi imitating a doorbell. He’s such a meme. Ceci n'est pas une pipe.
Seemingly, he teaches himself a new recipe every week. To perfection. Yoongi is very particular about sticking to the recipe and wielding his kitchen tools in the right way. He collects knives, olive oil, and still hates cutting onions.
He separates sleep time, work time, and couple time as the holy trinity. For each, he switches his mood.
Blushes easily no matter for how long you’ve been together.
Establishes his own radio show where he DJs at one point.
Yoongi keeps an extreme track on the garbage schedule. He knows exactly what is due when. Separating the trash is a must. That includes sorting out fake friends trying to get between your relationship. Your social circle as a couple is extremely deliberate.
Yoongi deems himself a terrible host for guests. Unless Hoseok is there to drag him out, it's true he rather stays in the kitchen or at the barbecue preparing the menu courses rather than making small talk. He leaves the hospitality bits to you, however you want to go about it.
What he lacks in conversing with guests, he makes up in bed, God is absolutely fair.
He sings and hums pretty often and has his own vernacular of extraterrestrial uwu noises. It's an alphabet that you have to yet decipher but it's incredibly cute.
Self-made paintings everywhere around his house.
Yoongi hasn't gone clubbing since grammar school. The most he does is going to a restaurant at lunch with very close friends. And always in a work context. His private life is so secluded from everything else and paparazzi just don't spot him anywhere, Dispatch thinks he must live abroad.
Very well, he does consider his big ole house a separate country. It's a living organism with a studio, gym, trophy room, small-size basketball court, and vastly equipped kitchen. A home theater as well, he likes American movies (like Inception) and Korean action genres, and you can stream whatever you fancy in there whenever you like.
Yes, he has underwear with cute little bears on.
There's even a little pond in the backyard. Yoongi, Pisces he is, likes fishes after all. Sometimes he sits at the edge of the 'Little Ole Min Lake (LOML)' and stares into the water for literal hours with his chin parked on his palm.
His fridge is so high-tech and futuristic, even Yoongi is rendered clueless by its AI sometimes. The washing machine, too.
Yoongi watches RuPaul’s drag race. What did you expect? He finds it so humorous.
Owns lord knows how many comic collections.
Favorite holiday destination: New York.
Christmas is basically 50% you unveiling new music equipment to him in the garage and Yoongi almost fainting at the sexiness of it. The other 50% is spent holding hands and orgasm after orgasm until the new year since you loose track of time.
Goes on long rants why he’d marry you again every weekend.
Making you presents is his specialty. Always accompanied with a hand-written note. He writes a lot of things by hand for you in general. Texting, basically never. Always on paper.
No sex without a blanket and socks on. Yoongi gets cold very very easily and just doesn’t like showing skin. You buy him a heated blanket for his birthday, he even uses it in his studio chair.
Chronically addicted to making out.
Matching black outfits and glasses.
Laughs at even your worst jokes or phrases you didn’t expect you even uttered.
Yoongi owns the phoniest, most secretive-looking black car ever and nobody knows about it. Even he forgets he owns it, in fact he genuinely acts like it just doesn’t exist. Hilarious. And that guy has a level 1 Korean driver's license. Which allows him to drive trailers and busses and fucking trucks, and construction machines, let that sink in.
It's really a genius curse. Yoongi being put to the test will always deliver but he won't choose to execute his full skillset if he doesn't have to. Well, pragmatic. He's not as phony as he thinks he is, which is even more hilarious.
He uses that behemoth of a car so scarcely because he'd rather have things delivered to his doorstep and he's stingy with gas. Also, he doesn't like traffic and driving because of the traumatic shoulder accident and his tendency to space out. Translation: You drive that thing... that monster... it really is an impressive, fast, and scary machine.
If someone devious ever even remotely manages to invade his privacy and get past the doubly-installed security system, he has enough money to deal with it no matter what.
If it concerns your privacy, he's a red belt. And owns Jin's number if a taekwondo master is required. Jimin's if it needs someone with kendo skills.
If Yoongi needs someone to go on a complete rampage, Jungkook lives just down the block. He can sprint to Yoongi's bunker I mean mansion within 45 seconds. 30 if it's very urgent. 20 if the reward is an instant ramen splurge with Yoongi's black card.
He has a sexy, glamorous sword collection hanging on the living room wall anyways, so. Who the hell is dumb enough to mess with him and his expensive lawyer in the first place.
But just in case, who knows... Yoongi settles matters shruggingly, anonymously, and with cash and he's too exhausted for violence, but don't underestimate his deter-min-ation and network for emergencies. Also, he is Agust D after all.
He will bonk a naughty burglar or kidnapper across the head with a wooden cooking spoon or take him down by throwing a basketball if the situation requires it. Damn, his reflexes are so fast, a feral cat in motion. So, lean back and sip on your drink of choice. Things are cared for.
If Yoongi is the one being kidnapped or a highly skilled stalker invades the property at night when he's fast asleep (nothing can wake this man during certain hours, strong REM right here): Don't forget that honeyboy is a Dodgers fan. There are signed baseball bats everywhere in this damn house.
In that sense, your parents visiting you here for the first time thought you were an undercover thug couple. Not to worry mom and dad, you both just like sports very much okay.
Yoongi walks around in all black clothes and the rooms are all seemingly dark. Even if you live together, you don't know his skin care routine. It's clear to you he's some sort of vampire.
Since Yoongi always forgets to remove his makeup, you made it a habit to wipe it down when he's about to pass out. He won't lie, he enjoys that kind of affection.
Holly is your resident child. You're essentially a family.
He insists to tackle this by himself, Yoongi sees his therapist monthly. Not shifting responsibility is something he's stubborn about and he pours his emotions into writing. You will do conversation about deeper stuff, but he says it's mostly up to him and his own mind. He dislikes burdening you or opening up too much and it's something to respect rather than force him about. If he wants to share a thought, he will. It doesn’t mean he can’t trust you or sucks at communicating (we know that he’s direct). Yoongi simply can’t put that much pain in such few words nor should you alleviate it for him.
Calls from the manager faze Yoongi as much as Jimin is bothered by gravity. If he’s busy kissing your body slow mo, who the hell dares to disturb his worship.
This man had so many let-downs and interpersonal catastrophes in his life, he's super discerning with people. Because he rolls that way, during their first meeting Yoongi uses his psychology certificate on your friends. You see him squint at them, he listens very closely. After they pass the vibe check aka meow radar, he befriends them, too.
Yoongi doodles Grammy trophies everywhere to manifest them.
Yoongi shaves his legs.
All the sex toys he’s ever bought are black. Gotta vibe in style.
He spends ridiculous amounts of time in the studio but he's yours for the remainder of the night, breakfast, and he makes a lavish lunch and dinner.
Um, consider his head parked between your legs. The Hongkong line was not a joke.
Doesn’t mind you squishing his cheeks whenever and for how long you like.
Every other weekend he gets flowers, vouchers, and gifts — not because of fans, they don’t know where his house is, but because he donates so much.
Namjoon often drops by and cleanses the area with his crystals.
Yoongi is a photography major so you can ask him to take professional, ceiling-high black and white shots of you.
Feeding each other food lovingly. Man, this guy got lips.
He set up a library just for you, in the exact historical aesthetic you like the most. Send him the link to any book you want, it's basically in the online shopping cart already. As I said, he wants to make you presents like every week.
Sometimes he sits on the other end studying English videos and vocab while you read. And yes, he's already 95% fluent but pretends being merely intermediate. He knows technical terms even native speakers have never heard of.
He collects pajamas and earrings.
Swears on the phone.
Namjoon being the horniest member is a cover-up story. Yoongi masturbates almost unreasonable amounts of times, by himself and in your arms when going to bed. Not gonna lie, it’s a sight to see his hands at work. He’s almost equally obsessed with fingering you once you ask him.
Yoongi was the one asking you to move in and almost had a nervous meltdown before meeting up with you to tell you just that.
He’s the little spoon and of course a sleeping burrito to hold tight.
Finds you equally attractive in any state or styling. Yoongi practices what he preaches, he always reacts the same and says the same.
Jams out to outrageous beats Namjoon sends him by dancing in the studio. You walk in on him every time. Was embarrassed at first, now you dance along.
Has bought you a life-sized Yoongi pillow and customized you a giant Shooky to hug when he’s not at home over night.
Owned a wine cellar until he quit drinking. Turned it into a piano room instead.
Only you know Yoongi has a serpent and dagger tattoo.
Scrubs the bathroom religiously.
The house smells like restaurant food and his extravagant perfumes half of the time.
Sometimes he has to remind himself he’s married to you and not his coffee machine. He shall be forgiven. You can’t complain that he doesn’t love you enough, nor is he ever not adorable when drinking his latte.
Never wears short sleeves. It can be scorching and he’ll wear a jacket.
Tell him and the cap stays on during sex.
He grows his hair out and puts it in a low bun. The bangs remain.
Yoongi has installed the most fire-proof building in the entire city it seems. That he wanted to be a firefighter when he was young definitely shows. Figures the house has to be protected from heat: His blasting studio music and Yoongi himself are just way too sizzling.
Still melts into a puddle when you kiss his nose.
Couple sunrise watching.

NO THIS POST IS NOT A DISCUSSION FORUM. EITHER KEEP SCROLLING OR VIBE WITH THE REST OF US
I thought I had already been clear on what my stance was on the matter, but after today I feel like I need to yell it off the top of my lungs. I SUPPORT ROETVEEG PIET AND BLM. LISTEN TO BLACK VOICES AND ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR WRONGS.
(Information about the Dutch holiday and why it’s racist under the cut! includes extern sources and images!)
Summary
Sinterklaas is a Dutch tradition that starts at the first Saturday after 11 November and ends at 5 December. A figure called Sint Nicholaas comes on a boat from Spain to the Netherlands to celebrate his birthday on the 5th with his little helpers, the Zwarte Pieten. The Zwarte Pieten give candy to the kids and on the 5th kids get a gift from Sinterklaas.
The Racism (Black Pete)
All sounds fairly innocent, until you see what the Zwarte Pieten look like.
Tumblr media
These are the traditional Zwarte Pieten (it translates to Black Petes btw). These individuals are usually played by white people and are purposely darkened to black with red lipstick, black curly hair and sometimes golden earrings. I have always been told the dark skin was to represent “soot” from the chimneys, however, up until recent years there was no effort made to actually appear as smeared. In fact, a lot of effort was put into making sure not a single speck of light skin was visible because that could ruin the illusion. (the illusion being, hiding your identity behind blackface.)
These characters are also played to be playful, hyperactive, carefree, happy to do their work and often praise Sinterklaas himself. Which are all traits often depicted alongside the “happy slave” stereotype from way back when and the S*mbo stereotype.
other racist depictions are also on display in stores and houses (often on display near a window for kids to see) in the form of little Black Petes, most of them resembling the G*lliw*g. (first image is a common window prop during Sinterklaas, the second image is the racist G*lliw*g)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This very outdated depiction of black people only really started being questioned in the early 2010′s. However, support for questioning Black Pete only started to become somewhat acceptable around 2016/2017... And even then the public has been largely Pro Black Pete until 2020, after the Black Lives Matter movement also started to become a valid topic of discussion in the Netherlands.
The Transition
Between 2010 and 2020 a lot happened since Black Pete officially got taken into question and talk about whether or not Black Pete should be changed started to become a genuine topic of discussion. When the question first rang, the majority of the Dutch folk were against the change. I was against this change as well. I think I should note that I was around 13 at the time and it is a very common phenomenon for kids to mimic the opinion of their parents and teachers. But this indeed a genuine opinion I had at some point and I acknowledge that with full responsibility.
The main reasons everyone was against this change was because we did not see it as racist and were convinced the “goal” with this movement was to entirely remove Pete from the holiday or remove the holiday as a whole from the list.
Tumblr media
I would also like to note that the Dutch folk’s opinion on what is and isn’t racist is very outdated as well. (As I write this now in 2020 it is still not a whole lot better but around the 2010′s it was definitely worse.) As this topic gained attraction, jokes about black men having huge dicks (the m*and*ngo stereotype), “watering the Africans” and much more were made to me and other people regularly enough to be normal or at the very least, were seen as a bit of a cheeky thing to say. And despite being a multicultural country, Asian people were still referred to as “Chinese”, Native Americans as “Indians” and Islamic women as “Penguins” as well.
But back on the topic. As the years went on, more and more protests against Black Pete gained attraction and by now parents started to use these protests as another reason to be against the change because “they are ruining it for the kids”  White parents would also start to praise the word of their 1 black colleague/friend for being against the change as well.
When the topic started to become more prominent, people made the attempt to change the Black of a Black Pete to another colour. This created the short lived bizarre creation of Rainbow Pete. (also seen in the picture above)
Tumblr media
Rainbow Pete was a very short lived idea and was considered weird by many. However, I personally do believe this was an important step in the transition. Rainbow Pete took the depersonalisation tied to Black Pete and quite literally, showed its true colours. It’s ehhh hard to explain what “A Pete” is in English. But growing up I never considered them as human, nor were they ever explained to me as ACTUALLY being human. They are just described as a Pete, and a Pete is all they are. They aren’t people who can have other jobs in Spain or can travel the world to find something else to do. They are a Pete, and therefore they will always be with Sinterklaas in Spain, making toys for us, giving us candy and then going back to Spain with Sinterklaas again.
And that’s why I think this odd colour change was so important. Because by making them green or blue or pink it properly showed how ALIEN Petes felt. Like a whole other species. It tied a certain uncomfortable environment to the depersonalisation and after it’s short lived appearance, Soot Smudge Pete was a much easier step to make
Tumblr media
Soot Smudge Pete, or in Dutch known as Roetveeg Pete, is the most recent and most inclusive variant of the Petes. This Pete only requires a few dark smudges to mimic actual soot and can be played by all races.
Tumblr media
in 2018/19 Soot Petes started to become more present in the official parades, which a lot of parents were rather disgusted about. I personally think this is the period in which a lot of people just straight up outed themselves as racist, actively being against “White Pete” and actively longing for the “Real Petes” to return. Even with these Petes slowly becoming more popular, it is still not safe for most people who are against Black Pete to discuss the matter with Pro Black Pete individuals in this time period. Pro Black Pete individuals (often family or coworkers) more often than not become very heated when the topic arises and I cannot say I’ve ever seen the same attitude from people who are against Black Pete.
Present Day
In 2020, thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, it has become way more socially acceptable to support Soot Smudge Pete. Parents who are still Pro Black Pete are still vocally voicing their disgust every time Soot Petes are present instead of Black Petes and much like what happened to me back then, their opinions also seep through onto their children. With these people still present in Sinterklaas spaces it also sadly occurs they press their believes on Soot Petes by giving them too much soot and still giving them a black, curly wig.
However, with the way things are going right now and the positive, multicultural depiction present in the media, I believe we are finally on our way to a more positive environment for kids of all kinds of backgrounds!
Afterthoughts
Tumblr media
This whole post sparked after I dealt with a nasty situation myself while playing a Soot Pete at my old Elementary school. I really wanted to play this role to tie a more positive view on Soot Petes with all the parents creating such a negative environment around the Sinterklaas times and thought I could take matters into my own hands. However, I was Sooted up by a Pro Black Pete mother and thus, nearly got as dark as my brown hair. (besides that I also have gender issues and despite the school knowing I’m called Josh, put me in a dress outfit,, but that’s a more personal issue) I was able to wipe most of it off by the time the kids came in, but not without sharing some discouraging words with my mother, who told me to “just suck it up”.
It’s really important to me for people to know how Bad stuff like that still is in this country and I just... don’t understand why people would still support Black Pete after all this time. These people are either friends, family, or just kind people I know and love who around November open their mouths to say the most vile things and create such a sour situation for everyone involved. And after Black Pete is proven to be racist time and time again, still supporting it... It makes me wonder if this has to do with pride more than anything.
No one wants to be called a racist, but is it really that hard to acknowledge some of the shit you said and did was just plain wrong to the point that you’re taking your opinion to new extremes and decide to die on a sinking ship..?
I’ve said racist things. I have compared the curly black hair of a Black Pete to black classmates. I have compared Black Pete to black classmates. I have joked about them not needing to be face painted to be just like Black Pete. I have made those connections and I’m ashamed I did. But you do what you can to deal with it and become better for those around you. You listen to black voices, support black artists and black businesses and become better as a person. We need to start acknowledging how much our society is actually structured to belittle and undervalue black people and you can’t do that when you’re THAT far up your own ass.
phew... anyways. Black Lives Matter! Don’t use tradition to defend racism! Fijne Pakjesavond!!

So, Boku No Hero Academia World Heroes' Mission is finally on my country’s cinemas, and now that I’ve finally watched it, it’s time for my thoughts.
Tumblr media
(Spoilers ahead!)
Let’s start off with the fact that I’m rewatching the movie, but this time it’s someone’s recording of it. Finding it might have taken me a while, but I am the master at finding pirated content.
My thoughts:
Izuku’s new suit man, I love it.
That intro tho, now that’s perfection.
Rody’s English dub. I never watch the dubs of anything, but I found a recording of the English dub so I’m rewatching this while I write. The point is, I already love his dub.
The fact that Izuku couldn’t catch up to Rody for a while is ridiculous.
Bones is trying to do way too cool scenes, to just realize that they don’t have enough budget to make them look good, but they don’t care so we end up with this, some scenes that look crappy to be done by animation studios, but wonderful if they were fanmade.
May I propose Midoriya Izuku as the best Spider-Man? My man caught his Gwen Stacy/MJ on his first try! /ref
Todoroki is seriously like “Break your phone and run away. I don’t care if you actually killed someone. Just run”. Or at least that’s how I’ll always interpret it since I saw a post about that.
Izuku seriously just went all Light Yagami there by sending that secret message.
“Cafetería Callejón” huh. So this actually does take place in Spain? I thought that article I saw was a joke or an exaggeration, granted, I didn’t read it, but still! (Later in the post I’ll talk about where the movie actually takes place).
Tumblr media
Rody. My guy. Best big brother ever.
That scene in the cave was the moment in which I realized, “god. I’m gay. I’m way too gay. I’m too gay for this two.”.
All of that thing about how Rody doesn’t like heroes because they never go to the place in which he lives, therefore he believes that all of them do it for the fame pissed me off. Not because I don’t agree, because he’s entirely right, but because I’ve been writing a fanfiction for a while about that idea, and now I’ll no longer make the fanfic that makes the reader go “damn, I never thought of it that way”, because canon now said so as well :/. I mean. I’m glad that they said it, but dude!
While doing the rewatch, I found out that what the dub and the sub say are different things. Sure, that’s to be expected but one stood out to me. While Izuku introduces himself, in both he says some variation of the same thing: “but my hero name is Deku”, Rody answers and says essentially the same in both the (oficial) Spanish sub, and on the English dub: “Deku. That’s easy to remember”. And while in the Spanish sub he says “yeah, that’s how I like it” (or something along the lines of that. The point is that he says that that’s the point), in the English dub he says “yeah, it’s growing on me”. So are my suspicions about Izuku not actually liking being called “Deku”, and slowly getting used to it true? GO ME! YOU FIGURED IT OUT!
I remember how much I loved whatever Rody wrote on that piece of paper he left to whoever he got the van from, but on this video version I’m watching it’s unreadable, so I can’t quite comment on in.
English dub’s “first person to break her heart gets KO’d (yes, I did have to google that word)” is the second best thing I’ve ever heard in a BNHA dub, and probably in any other dub.
(If you are curious, my favorite thing that I’ve ever heard in a dub is the dub for Latin America of the movie BNHA Two Heroes, in which Bakugou tells Todoroki, and I quote, “¡A un lado, copia de Zuko!”, which essentially translates into “Out of the way, copy of Zuko!”. I still can’t believe this is canon.)
Unrelated to it all, but I absolutely hate how they pronounce “Izuku Midoriya”.
Oh, right, this isn’t a romance movie about two guys running away from the country to live together in the middle of nowhere, I forgot that this was an action movie /hj. But in all seriousness, this isn’t your average BNHA movie, it’s too different from the other two. Not complaining tho!
Rody, why are you so much like one of the characters in my WIP fanfic? You are ruining all my hard work love! /nm. No but really, he is so much like that character. Older brother, “I have to work even though it makes me miserable”, “anything for my siblings” kind of vibe. Oh no. No I must include Rody in said fic. How do I even do that-
My girl just kamikazed herself. Jeez. (“Kamikazed appears not to be a word, but that ain’t gonna stop me!)
There’s just no reason for Iida and Aizawa not to be fighting. Honestly, there’s no reason for Mina, Aoyama, Koda, Hagakure, Aizawa, and Iida not to be out there, but even if I love them all, the fact that most of them aren’t out there makes sense. Those last two still make no sense tho!! Mirio gets a pass on this.
Godzillo!! You are back my beloved friend!!!
Toshinori, they also did you dirty man. Let this man have his protagonism! (Oh come on! How is it that the same language that made “thingies”, “ko’d”, and “defenestration” a word doesn’t have a word for “protagonismo”?! Even the Spanish language has it for god’s sake!)
Tetsutetsu’s hero name is “Real Steel”. His costume says “FE”, as in the element’s atomic symbol. Oh come on.
Salaam. I have no words to describe him so you’ll get the fandom’s wiki: “Salaam is a brown-skinned man with a two dimensional appearance, similar to human representations in ancient Egyptian art.”. A two dimensional appearance. I still haven’t gotten over this.
Those frames of the bad guy on top of all those dead heroes is so cool. When I find a better version of it, I’ll stitch all the frames together and make a wallpaper.
I’ll never stop finding it ridiculous that suddenly everyone wants a quirkless world. I get it, it isn’t everyone, but still. I find it so unlikely that so many people agreed and joined Humarise. Another thing I also find ridiculous is how 20% of people are quirkless, dude we know three quirkless people by name.
After comparing it with a map, I’ve found out that neither Otheon or Klayd are located in actually existing places of the world.
Tumblr media
Unrelated once again, but I can’t get over the fact that Burnin’s hair is still. When I was reading the manga, I pictured it as a constantly moving fire in her head. Imagine how disappointed I was when I watched the anime.
Ah yes, battle scenes. Which means that now my brain will stop paying attention. Can’t I just focus on what I’m watching? Nop! You’re gonna be thinking about Encanto songs in its Español Latino dub.
All throughout Bakugou’s battle, the only think I could think about was “just use your arm grenade things”. Also, I did not care about that battle enough for it to be shown that much.
And on the other hand, I truly wanted to see Todoroki’s battle more. Yeah sure, I’m not a super Todoroki fan like others, but I like him and that underwater battle was something I’d like to see.
I still don’t quite get Mister Bad Guy’s (the villain, aka Flect Turn) quirk.
Rody catching Izuku right before he falls. Oh I love this bastard.
English dub Rody has the amazing ability to somehow make me laugh on serious moments. I don’t remember what either versions of him said, but English dub version called Mister Bad Guy something like “Blue guy” and I find that hilarious.
Izuku, my child, you didn’t realize that Eddie Soul was Rody’s father?
Aaaaand my son Rody got himself shot. FU-
Can I just point out that I’ve been doing this since before 8pm and it’s currently 11:01pm.
In both my rewatch and in my first time watching I spaced out during battles, to the point in which I still don’t know how Bakugou got a bloodshot eye.
Why is it that in every BNHA big fight someone will always end up shirtless?
Todoroki, how haven’t you drowned? Tell me your secret. Also, you can’t fight fire with fire, just make a chunk of ice and make the heat from the fire melt it into water, I have a feeling that that’ll do something useful.
And Izuku turned Super Saiyan Blue again.
United States World Smash is too overpowered.
Those last like 53 seconds lasted around 6 minutes and 12 seconds.
Recovery Girl kissing Bakugou is such a mood.
“Although if I had died stopping those bombs, I would have become a total legend!” “That’s a morbid thing to say”. God do I love this two.
Pino crying while Rody tells Izuku about how it would be better for everyone if he just stayed home. THIS. TWO.
Pino’s celebration dance.
Iida running to Uraraka and Izuku. Oh I love this trio.
UA’s Big Three get their own image. Good for them! Don’t they all just look lovely?
New chaotic trio, Cementoss, Present Mic, and Eraserhead.
I need an HD version of that handshake between Toshinori and Izuku.
Oh the Soul siblings. They have no reason to be that cute. Also, even though the version that I’m watching while rewatching the movie cuts before it is shown, that drawing of Izuku, Todoroki, and Bakugou (was Bakugou actually in it? I’d guess that he is, but I only remember the first two) is also wonderful.
To finally end all of this, Izuku and Rody are gay, that Todoroki scene in which he comes out and fights against the guys with the helicopter (the part with the crazy camera angles) looks fanmade, Rody’s English dub is wonderful, Rody has destroyed all of my WIP fanfiction as he is way too similar to the protagonist but this just makes me want to add him into the story, Aoyama should have been sent to fight in France like come on-, having timers in movies always ends up making a mess (especially since when I first watched the trailer, I thought that those 2 hours would be real life hours as the movie was most likely gonna last 2 hours and a bit more), the whole idea of Humarise is ridiculous and now I want to read quirkless Midoriya Izuku fanfiction with it, I forgot multiple times that this was an action movie, I have the attention span of a newborn puppy, Todoroki is an undrownable being and therefore, a god, and at this point I’ll create as many words as I please.
I give this movie an 8 out of 10.
I spent like 4 and a half hours on this.

Bridge the Gap: Mastering English to Telugu Translation
Over 120 languages make up India’s linguistic environment, which looks like a colorful patchwork. Over 80 million people speak Telugu, making it one of the most important languages in the country. However, the language hurdle can make it hard for many companies and content makers to reach this large Telugu community. In this case, English to Telugu translation is very helpful because it makes conversation clear and strong.
Why Telugu Matters
Telugu is the official language of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and a lot of people in nearby states speak it too. It has a long history of literature and a digital area that is growing quickly. By turning your content into Telugu, you can reach a huge audience that is interested in what you have to say.
Think about what would happen if your marketing tools, website content, or even social media posts were read by people who speak Telugu. Research has shown that people are more likely to trust and be interested in information that is written in their own language. You can talk directly to your audience when you translate from English to Telugu. This helps people trust each other and bond more.
Beyond Words: Cultural Nuance
To translate something well, you need to do more than just change the words. To translate from English to Telugu, you need to know a lot about both languages and the cultures they come from. A good translation can get to the heart of your message and make sure it hits home with people who speak Telugu. This includes interpreting quips, jokes, and humor correctly while keeping the tone and style of the original text.
Human Expertise Meets Technology
The rise of machine translation (MT) tools has changed the field of translation in a big way. These services that use AI can quickly translate big amounts of text. However, human knowledge is still the best way to handle important material that needs to be accurate and sensitive to different cultures.
Both machine translation (MT) and human translation (HT) work best when they are used together. Machine translation (MT) can do the basic work of translating, and then human translators can make sure that the result is correct, takes into account cultural differences, and flows naturally in Telugu. Professional translation services from English to Telugu are based on this combination of technology and human knowledge.
How to Find the Right Partner
There are a lot of translation services out there because the need for English to Telugu translation is growing. But picking the right partner is very important if you want your translated material to be good quality and useful.
Experience: Try to find a service that has done English to Telugu translations that went well in the past.
Expert Translators: Make sure that the team has qualified speakers who know a lot about both languages and the topic at hand.
Cultural Sensitivity: To make sure that texts are correct and suitable, the service provider should show that they are very aware of regional differences.
Technology Integration: When a service provider uses the power of machine translation (MT) while putting human control first, they can produce quick and accurate texts.
BUILDING BRIDGES, BUILDING SUCCESS
English to Telugu translation services are very important because they help people talk to each other and create a place where your brand and the Telugu audience can share experiences. Remember that accuracy is very important as you start your journey to connect with this ever-changing market. If you pay for professional translation services, your content will really connect with people, which will open up a lot of doors for your brand.
In Conclusion
Language is powerful because it can bring people together. English to Telugu translation can help you talk to a lot of people and close the connection gap. You can make your material more useful and achieve success in the Telugu market if you have the right translation partner by your side.

Yes, it is wild, and it's what confused me last year, when I was trying to find some info! The first time we heard of Sam being involved, it was a kind of a wishy-washy article that was not sure what it was reporting (something about Sam filming in Paris what is 'believed to be a TCOMC adaptation'). Then there was that article that sounded like it was translated from Italian to English by a bot that I did not trust at all (and that turned out to be right) and then on one of my google searches, I found another article that said that there was going to be a TCOMC adaptation and that a French actor would play the title part. I thought, ofc, why would a British guy play a French hero? As @jesstasticvoyage can tell you, I didn't believe that it was true, that he was really playing Edmond Dantes. I had a real Crisis last year and thought that maybe I should not continue being a fan anymore (bloody DJATS), and there was no news coming about any new Sam project (Bagman was filmed shortly after DJATS). Although he did have that beard (that his dad joked on twitter was for a ZZ Top tribute, lol), which strongly indicated prison-era Edmond Dantes. So anyway, then about this time last year Variety finally confirmed it and the other adaptation with the French actor (who as you know is Pierre Niney) was a French language film.
You see I thought it was too good to be true. I read the book for the first time more than 20 years ago in my home country and while I forgot a lot of details, it always stayed with me. I meant to read it in English, but the length was intimidating. I finally picked it up a year ago bc of Sam getting the role. I should have trusted the universe and I should have trusted Sam! In my defence, I suffer from anxiety. Anyway, enough about the history you didn't ask for, I'm not sure how it came about that there are 2 adaptations of the same book, I thought Mediawan, the French media company was involved with both, but I'm really not sure bc I don't really understand these matters, but I once imagined that somewhere along the line there was a divorce and one half took the French film and the other the English-language series. Probably just a coincidence.
As to whether I'm afraid - no! Not at all! Abundance mindset means Both Is Good. One is a film and the other a series, so they should be judged differently anyway. I've seen the film and it's great, Pierre is amazing and I hope he wins awards (and actually seeing him all thin and emaciated after 4 yrs in Chateau D'If brought to mind Sam, who is just as dedicated to his roles)--although, as an adaptation it does not quite deliver and makes some questionable choices. But as a film, there's little to complain about. It's true that there is probably more pressure on Sam's series, bc they have the runtime to cover the whole book, which Pierre's film, albeit 3 hours long, could not do (and nobody expected it would).
I mean, with any adaptation, there's always anxiety. The one that I most worry about is Haydee (she is, apparently, a 'brave and empowered woman' *shudder*) and who knows what ideas they get. IMDb lists about half the cast, from this we can deduce the second half (except Caderousse, Andrea and Bertuccio, whom I cannot deduce), but if they can have 'Jacopo's Brother's Wife', surely they must have them too.
As the book's saying goes, wait and hope!
You know what would be cool, if Sam Claflin and Pierre Niney, the two latest actors to play the Count of Monte Cristo, did a photoshoot together.

❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁ ❁
It was 2 minutes to 7am and I was late for school. Running to put on my warm sweatshirt and getting ready psychologically to go out in a cold weather, I grabbed my keys and tried to lock the door almost dropping my backpack on the floor. It was almost summer, but my town wasn't disappointed in having very cold mornings and hot afternoons.
"Shit," I murmured as I kicked the door, insisting that didn't want to close it. "Why hasn't my mom called someone to fix this thing yet?" I spoke to myself and finally managed to close it hearing a click. Coming down the stairs practically running, I closed the small gate and strode down the street.
I lived with my parents in a town called Kingston-upon-Thames, in a tiny two-bedroom house, very close to the school. You just need to walk about 4 blocks and voilá, I could already see the entrance gate and the familiar faces of the gringos. I was in the last year of high school, just turned 17 and I was born in Brazil, but grew up in London, when my father had to move because of his work, when I was only 6 years old. Obviously we weren't rich, my father worked with woodwork, and my mother currently worked in a small flower shop in the city center. But when my father received an offer to move to another country, he didn't think twice. Learn another culture, a new language and still earn some good money? An offer that cannot be refused.
The first time we arrived it was very strange, only my father knew intermediate English and my mother and I obviously did not know a single word. But we quickly befriended a family that lived on our street: the Osterfields. Jenna and Carter were the parents of two children: Harrison, the same age as me and little Charlotte (newborn at the time). Harrison and I immediately became inseparable, and he became like a brother to me and our families became one.
Obviously with him, also came nothing more and nothing less than: the Holland family. Nikki and Dom had 4 male children, one my age: Tom, Harry and Sam twins, 3 years younger and Paddy who was born 2 years later. So the family just grew, our parents became best friends, and me, Harrison and Tom became an unbeatable trio. There was no Y/n, without Tom and Harrison and vice versa, we're always together.
We went to the same school since always. As Haz lived only a few houses below mine, we meet and go together and Tom, who lived on the other side of the school, met us at the gate every day.
I went down the street and saw Haz sitting on the wall in front of his house, fiddling with his cell phone with a earphone, as soon as I approached he raised his head and smiled.
- Finally, I thought you aren’t going to class today. - He said getting up and giving me a kiss on the cheek.
- Good morning to you too Haz. - I said laughing and hooking my arm on him, while we went down the street. - You know that now that my mom is working on the other side of town she leaves early and then I have to wake up by myself, which is clearly a problem.
- Sleepyhead, - he said and I playfully tapped his arm while he laughed.
- Well, i'm, what can I say? Sleeping is the best thing in the world. - I said. - Did you do the history homework?
- Wich history homework? - He stopped suddenly looking at me in shock.
- Harrison Osterfield, you are not going to tell me that you forgot the work that I talked about it every day for almost a month. - I said putting my hand on my waist scolding him.
- Well ... I completely forgot. - Haz said scratching the back of his head with the face of a stray dog. -I was busy decorating the lines from the play.
- Wow Harrison, that way you will fail and then you'll  came crying to me.
- Ok mom, sorry! But was it for today? Can I copy it and give it to you later?
- Ok, but just this time, and do me a favor to exchange practically all the words I used or i'll be in trouble. - I said taking out my briefcase, while he held my backpack and I handed him my work.
- I love you... - he said giving me back my backpack and hugging me, kissing my head afterwards.
- And I don't love you at all, bummer. - I giggled and we rounded the corner of the school.
Tom was already leaning against the side of the gate with his backpack between his legs, talking to a guy who was doing theater with him and Harrison. He was laughing at something, wearing a black hoodie, his hair was a little messy under his hood and his nose was slightly red from the cold. For some reason my stomach did some flips as we approached.
Harrison and Tom were very handsome, there was no denying it, they were half nerds, half bad boys (in the sense of forgetting to study for the exam or not doing their homework once in a while), they did theater, they were nice and got along very well with girls since they started puberty. As for me, I was the nerd who was always concerned about grades and getting into the journalism college, I didn't always have excellent grades, but they were enough to pass or impress the professors when I felt inspired. I wasn't popular, but not a completely ghost too, because being best friends with the boys ended up calling attention in some way.
The only boyfriend I had was a guy named Steven, and also my first kiss, to at age 15, but we broke up last year. Steven was cool, but we had different views on things and use to think about completely different futures, so we thought it was best to broke up. And since then I'm alone and very well, thank you.
But since I broke up with Stev, for some reason I've started to have some weird feelings for Tom. Weird in the meaning of being shy around him, with whatever he does, or whatever words he exchanges with me. Which is ridiculous, because he's my childhood friend, and I never felt any of that with Haz, so why with him I feel? I always saw Haz as my brother, but with Tom it's different, and I never understood why.
Anyway, here I was with my heart beating faster and faster as we approached. As soon as we got close, Tom waved goodbye to the guy he was talking. He grabbed his backpack off the floor and patted Haz on the back, kissing my forehead afterwards, which I immediately feel my cheeks burning with embarrassing, but no one realized.
- Hey mates! Finally! I thought you weren't coming anymore.- he said as the three of us went through the gate towards the school.
- The madam here, was the one who ended up sleeping too much, I was also waiting a long time.- Haz said and I rolled my eyes, making Tom smile.
- I understand Y/n, I also love sleeping... By the way, I said I was waiting a long time, but actually I just arrived. - He laughed - Your mother started working on that flower shop, right?
- Yeah! She started today, so I'm still getting used to waking up just with the alarm without my mom pulling me from under the covers by my hair.- I replied and they both laughed.
- Which class do you guys have now? - Tom asked as we went up the stairs to the first floor where the class rooms were.
-Math- Haz said, rolling his eyes. - Actually, I really have to go, because if I show up a second late again Mr. Jones will kill me. - he said giving us a brief wave and running to the opposite side.
- I have philosophy, thank God, one of my favorite subjects.- I said raising my hands to the sky as a joke and Tom laughed.
- Wow y/n, I thought your favorite subject was biology and English.- he said and I stuck out my tongue, but feeling a little warm inside, these subjects were the ones we had together.
- Anyway, see you later? I have physics now unfortunately.
- Yeah, I'll be at our new favorite place. - I giggle, it had been a week since me, Haz and Tom found a perfect place to stay during the break, which was on the back of the school, on a hill next to a tree, where we had a full view of the students down there. It was perfect, because the warm morning sun was shining and we'd be left on the ground gossiping and watching what others were doing.
- See you there shortie. -Tom said kissing the top of my head, giving me a wink and leaving towards his class room.
- Look who's talking. - I said loudly for him to hear and he showed me his middle finger from a distance, laughing at my face.
I turned around smiling and headed towards my class. The first two classes were normal, nothing new, I was still a little sleepy, so I ended up almost sleeping in the second geography class, where I was almost kicked out by Mr Wilson, who let It pass this time. The alarm hit indicating it was break time and I thanked God, practically running to stay out in the sun.
I grabbed my phone from my pocket and my headphones, hitting play on Radiohead's Subterranean Homesick Alien song and walking outside. I saw Steven with his new girlfriend Lily right on the way out, they were talking, hugging each other and looked very happy, he saw me and gave a smile from a distance where I reciprocated. Our break up went very well, without resentment, which made me happy.
I walked up the small hill and saw Haz and Tom already at our meeting place. Tom was lying down looking at the sky while Haz was sitting propped up in the tree.
- Did you guys miss me? - I said sitting next to Haz.
- Yeah, we were even thinking about how we could handle living without you y/n- Haz said and Tom chuckled.
- I know you two love me. - I said shrugging.
- In fact, we were arguing when you're going to have a new boyfriend. - Tom said and I froze.
- And who said I want a new boyfriend? I asked raising my eyebrow.
- We know you y/n, you starting to have your head in the clouds lately, always retweeting couple things and posting romantic songs, I can see that you're falling in love again.- Tom said, still looking at the sky.
- I agree. - Haz said taking the side of my earphone and putting into his ear. - She's even listening to Radiohead! And you always listen to Radiohead when you're in love. - I gave them a sarcastic laugh and pulled the earphone of his ear turning off the music making Haz laugh.
- You guys are idiots, I'm fine alone thank you, I just want to focus on my studies from now on. - I said and they both made a "hmm" in unison, making me roll my eyes.
- Actually, we were discussing where we're going to celebrate my 17th birthday tomorrow.- Tom said changing the subject, turning his head and covering the sun with his hand to look at me.
-Tomorrow is your birthday?- I asked pretending to be surprise and Tom rolled his eyes playfully.
- I know you two always look forward to my birthday, because you love me and want to surprise me.- he said and Haz and I laughed ironically. - But Marcos offered his house, because his parents are traveling, so we could make a cool party there! So I was thinking about calling the theater people and some of our friends like Julian, Tuwaine and etc, maybe getting some drinks too... - Tom said sitting down and cleaning some leaves that were stuck on his hoodie.
- I think it's a good idea, I'm not much of partying or drinking, but with you both I always have fun.- I said and Haz rested his head on my shoulder.
- Good to know we make you happy Y/n. - Haz said and I giggle patting his head.
- So we meet tomorrow? You guys want to stop by my house so we could go together?
- Actually, I have to go to my granny first, so I'll go from there.- Haz said and Tom gave him a thumbs up.
- Y/n you can go? Around 7pm it's ok?
-Of course Tommy. - I said and he smiled at the nickname.
- Okay, I'll wait for you at 7pm and I'll send you the address, mate.- he said to Haz as we got up listening to the bell ringing indicating the break was over.
- Deal!- Haz said.
- Deal. - I also said as we went down back to class.
The last classes were history, the subject I had with Haz and he returned my homework, assuring me that he had changed the words. We spend the whole class sending notes talking about nonsense and making jokes. Haz and I were pretty good at sending notes without the professor seeing.
But I confess I was puzzled by what the boys had said earlier, how did they have the impression that I was in love? I wasn't, was I? Was I showing too much that i had feelings for Tom? I don't know, I just know that the whole story had left me with immense anxiety.
The class was over and I said goodbye to Haz, because he had theater with Tom and I didn't have any extra activities that day. The only days that i had something was on monday, tuesday and thursday, when I have a school reinforcement to improve my notes to enter college. Which was a relief, since I had to run to the mall to look for a gift to give Tom for his birthday. I had been looking for weeks and I didn't find anything interesting to give to my best friend. Best friend isn't it? Nothing more than this...

The City of Romance
Summary: On Spencer’s mandatory leave, he plans a trip to Paris, France where he meets an unforgettable face.
A/N: I got this idea during my language class. Please excuse my terrible French, I am still learning. This might be 2 parts? Maybe 3? I’ll figure it out. Anyways if you have any ideas for this or other requests let me know!
Italics: Translation French to English.
This is more of an introduction <3
Part 2, Part 3
Check out my masterlist here!
Tumblr media
For as long as you remembered, you had stayed with your mom in France during summers and worked at her café. Specifically her café in Paris. It was a dream. She made lots of business and your family was already pretty well off. You met lots of people working this job, however one seemed to stick out to you.
“Bienvenue! Que puis-ie vous offrir aujourd’hui?”  “Welcome! What can I offer you today?”
“Sorry, I don’t speak French.” You smiled at the tall man in front of you. He was handsome and seemed kind but nervous.
“No worries. Welcome, what can I get you today?” He seemed relived at the fact you spoke English. You would’ve too.
“Can I get a coffee, 2 boxes of macarons, and 3 chocolate croissants?” You smiled and typed in the order on the computer on the counter.
“Of course. Will that be all?” He smiled and nodded. “Great. Your total is 24.50.” He handed you the foreign currency and you started to make his coffee and box his treats. “Here you are. Have a great day...”
“Spencer. You too,” He looked at your name tag, “Y/N. I should be on my way, I have a flight. Bye!” You smiled and waved.
The rest of the day you couldn’t get that boy out of your head. You were a little disappointed that he would have already left France but the thought of visiting your uncle made it better. You stayed with your mom in the summer and your dad the rest of the year. After he passed, your uncle had promised to take care of you while you were in America. You were a grown adult but that didn’t stop him. Even 3 weeks later, as you boarded the flight, you couldn’t stop thinking about Spencer. What did he need 3 chocolate croissants for? You need the delectable treats you brought for your uncle. He was going to meet you at his work and asked you to bring something for him. You couldn’t bring something just for him though, so you brought something for all of his team. You had never met his team but that didn’t stop you. They were his family, so they would be yours too.
He met you downstairs on the ground floor after you got through security.
“Bella!” You smiled and basically ran to hug him.
“Uncle David!” He squeezed you tight.
“How was Paris? And your flight?” You giggled a little.
“It was beautiful as always. You have to come visit me and mom some time. My flight was weird. Not in a bad way, I just met someone I guess and, never mind. How are you?”
“I’m good. I think coming out of retirement was definitely a good idea.” You both talked all the way up and all the way to his office.
“Oh, I totally forgot. I brought you guys some stuff from the café. Mom started working with a local bakery and their macarons are just perfect. And don’t even get me started on the croissants.” You pulled out the boxes from your bag and placed them on his desk.
“I know just the person who would love some of these. Come on, I will introduce you to her first.” You smiled and followed him to a dark room with a wall covered with monitors.
“Wow.” In such a dark space sat a bright colored blonde. Her outfit had lots of fun colors and her hair was curled. Her makeup and earrings were fun and exciting. Everything about her radiated good energy.
“Rossi what’s- And who is this beauty next to you? Hoping she’s not wife number 4.” You laughed.
“This is my niece Y/N. Y/N this is Penelope Garcia our technical analyst.” You held out your hand.
“It’s great to meet you Penelope. I heard you like pastries?” You held out a box and her face lit up.
“I love them! Ok wow, these look amazing, where are they from?” Her smile was huge as she looked at the croissants.
“Actually they’re from Paris.” Her jaw dropped. “My mom owns a café and bakery in Paris France. I’m just here during the year for school.” She is still stunned.
“Well wow. I don’t know what else to say. Wait yes I do. Thank for these!” You smiled.
“Of course. If you ever need some just tell David and they will be sent to your front door.” She held her arms out for a hug which you gave her.
“Alright, well I am going to take Y/N to meet the rest of the team. Bye Garcia!” She waved as you two walked out.
“I like her. She’s very fun. Not boring like you.” You joked. You saw a group of people standing over by a counter and that’s when you saw him. The man from the café. “Long time no see.” He was a little confused when he heard you, but when he saw you he understood.
“Oh hey Y/N. What are you doing here?”
“I’m just visiting my uncle. So this is where you were rushing off to then?”
“Yeah.” You saw a small smile creep on his face. It wasn’t a lot but you noticed it.
“Woah let’s slow down here pretty boy. Rossi, who is this?” You stared over at the man next to him. He was tall with a strong build and holding a cup of coffee.
“This is my niece Y/N. Y/N this is Derek Morgan, Emily Prentiss, and I guess you already know Spencer.” You nodded.
“Yeah, yeah I do.” They all stared at you both positively bewildered. “Oh, uh he came by the café I work at. He got a bunch of macarons.”
“Wait, you work where those came from?” The lady who was apparently known as Emily.
“Yeah, my mom owns it and I work there during the summer. Speaking of.” You pulled out a smaller box filled with cookies and macarons. “These are for you guys.
“Thank you gorgeous. I guess we may have to thank Spencer then for introducing us to these.” You giggled softly.
“I guess you will.” Your phone rang and you noticed the caller ID to be your mom. “Sorry. I have to answer this real quick.” You walked a few feet away before answering. “Salut maman!” “Hey mom!”
“Salut bebe! Avez-vous atterri?” “Hi baby! Have you landed?”
“Quais. Je parle en fait aux collegues de David. Puis-ie vous appeler un peu?” “Yeah. I’m actually talking to David’s colleagues. Can I call you in a bit?”
“Bien sûr. Je t'aime.” “Of course. I love you.”
“Je t'aime aussi. Au revoir.“ “I love you too. Bye.” You hung up the phone and headed back over to them.
“Well genius what did she say?” You laughed as you walked back.
“He wouldn’t know.” They all gave you an odd and ashamed look for asking him.
“She’s right. I don’t know French.”
“Spencer Reid. You have an eidetic memory and went to a new country and didn’t learn French?”
“Well I learned a little but I didn’t really need to learn any. A lot of the natives knew English.” You nodded.
“He’s right. And it was my mom, she was asking if I landed.” Suddenly another blonde woman popped over. JJ. You had met her before by accident. Last time you came to visit you had a late flight in and so when you came by David’s house he was having a dinner party but everyone had left except her. She wanted to get to know you and you got coffee. “JJ!”
“Oh my goodness Y/N! What’re you doing here?” She pulled you into a quick hug.
“I’m staying with David now for school because of what happened.” She gave a sympathetic smile.
Your father had passed away from a house fire. He was a bit older and already had health issues so the smoke inhalation was too much and he sadly passed.
“That’s great. How’s school been going?”
“Pretty well. I take some extra courses during the summer so I am looking for a job currently because I have everything I need done.”
“What career are you going into?” Derek questioned.
“Teaching. Specifically elementary because I can’t stand teenagers. They do not hold back, and as great as some of them are, I want my kids to be able and come see there first or kindergarten teacher years from now. I think I may have found a school around here but they haven’t gotten back to me yet.” They all nodded. “Well I was going to get some coffee if anyone wants to come along.”
“Reid why don’t you go?” Derek was patting him on the break to try and convince him to.
“Uh sure. If that’s okay with you of course.” You smiled.
“Of course. Let’s go I guess.” You walked with Spencer out to your uncles car that he so kindly lent you for the time being. He kept your car at his mansion so you wouldn’t have to worry about it. “Where should we go? I don’t normally come down here with David so I don’t really know a ton.” You asked as you got into the drivers side.
“There’s a little coffee shop not to far from here.” He gave you the directions as you drove. When you got there you ordered a coffee and a sandwich. Truth be told you were starved.
“So what degrees do you have?” He sipped his coffee before answering.
“I have a PhD in math, physics, and engineering as well as 3 BAs.” You jaw was 6 feet under. You assumed he was smart but damn.
“Wow. That’s... Impressive.” You laughed softly.
“Yeah. What about you? You said you wanted to be a teacher.”
“I have a bachelors in elementary education and one in special education. That is more so I can be more inclusive in the classroom. Honestly it’s pretty smart to get one because all children learn in very different ways. Like me, I loved reading when I was a child but I learned better by listening and looking at pictures. Some children think noise is distracting or that bright fun colored pictures are so we have to think about all of them and not just the majority. So far I have found a lot of different teaching methods to cater to all students. It’s really interesting. Sorry I’m rambling aren’t I? I do that when I get excited.” He chuckles and shakes his head.
“Don’t worry about it. One time I told a detective that it’s safer to kiss instead of shake hands.”
“Ooh. Yikes. Don’t tell that to kids though, they will run around kissing each other and get some kind of disease I swear.” Conversation flowed easily between you both. You both took turns rambling while the other listened. It was comforting to have someone who actually listened and could understand you when you spoke a mile a minute.
He couldn’t help but think the same. Most of his friends had teased him over his facts. You listened and asked questions. You didn’t cut him off or laugh. You were actually interested as was he when you spoke. You talked pretty fast but he managed to keep up. Before you realized it was no longer 1:30. It was 4:15. You had talked with him for hours and it only felt like minutes. You texted your uncle that you would just wait in the car for him but when Spencer got out you felt like you had to do it.
“Wait! Spencer!” He stopped and spun to see you running towards him. “Would you like to go out for dinner sometime? Maybe this weekend if you’re not on a case?” His smile was blinding.
“I love that.” You exchanged phone numbers.
“Perfect. Hopefully see you this weekend.” You placed a quick kiss on his cheek before running back to the car. He felt weak in the knees and thought he might collapse right then and there. Luckily he kept himself up until he got to the office. He was so excited and while he may not be religious, he prayed there wouldn’t be a case.

JayTim + 42 from the Dialogue Prompts + SPACE AU, pretty please?
I… hope this counts? Technically, it’s not IN space. Though Tim would like to be.
“You’re mad, Tim,” they said. “Stop trying to speak to aliens,” they said. “You’re wasting your life.”
Hah.
Tim has a… set-up.
What’s the point, he figures, in sending waves out to space where they might be heard in a hundred years, when you could just try to contact the aliens already on Earth? After all, if intelligent life is out there and capable of interstellar travel, and if humans haven’t noticed them yet, then said life must be hiding itself.
It stands to reason that these aliens must then be communicating among themselves in a form that’s inaccessible to humans. So Tim sat down and build every stupid crazy thing he could think off—unusual wave frequencies, smell transmitters (bad idea), hormone secretors… anything. There are forty devices stashed in his room, and he’s not crazy.
Because one day, space talks back.
“Koriand’r, what’s the name again for the thing—the strip around our waists that helps people not be naked? And why do I need it?”
Tim whirls around. It’s one of his Hail Mary machine—a radio frequency so fucking impractical, no one would ever use it.
Apart from an alien, apparently. Cause that question cannot have come from a human. Right?
“I’m not Kori-whatstheirname,” Tim says, trying to sound chill. “But it’s called a belt. We need it because our clothing is factory-made and not tailored to fit; and also because it’s not acceptable to be naked anywhere but some beaches in Germany.”
A long pause, then the voice replies: “You’re human.”
“Yes. Please don’t hang up. My name’s Tim Drake. Are you an alien?”
“Uh.” There’s another pause. “I… guess? I’m not from Earth.”
“Oh, awesome!” Tim is out of his seat and leaning forward, he’s that excited. “Wait, you speak English?”
“I have a—a device that can mimic your languages.”
Tim nods. “So like what Google Translate wants to be in another five years.”
“…I suppose.” A pause. “Actually… can you tell me—who or what is a ‘google,’ exactly? I figured out it’s one of your gods, but what do they do, exactly?”
“Oh boy, you just opened a whole new avenue of philosophy. I guess it could count as a god? Not in the religious sense, though.”
“I’m not a boy,” he’s immediately corrected. “I’m a Hzewf.”
“Okay. Okay.” Tim bounces back on his heels. “How about this? I explain Google to you—I’ll even throw in social media, if you want, but please don’t ask about Reddit, nothing can explain Reddit—and you tell me about the Hsev.”
“Hzewf. Okay.”
They talk. When the alien has to leave, Tim’s reluctant to agree—but the next day, the line crackles to life again.
“You’re a good source,” the alien says. “We… can keep talking. If you don’t mind.”
The alien’s name is something like j—more guttural sounding than Tim is used to, and with a long pause after—ay—or rather a pause i/j. Tim looks up various phonetic alphabets and dubs him J-a’i.
The Hzewf have a different variety of gender expression, so the two debate pronouns, and J-a’i decides that ‘he’ will do just fine. He’s addressed as that on a daily basis, anyway, and has never minded. He draws the line at being called a man, though.
What he is, though, is a total anthropology nerd. He wants to know everything about humans—that’s why he’s here, after all. Koriand’r, it turns out, is another alien from another planet he just met by accident. Apparently, she’s settled down and found love, so J-a’i tries not to bother her too much. The belt thing was a total emergency question.
And now, he has Tim.
It’s fun. Tim likes having a secret, a good one, for once. Every night, they talk. No matter how shitty his day is—and most of them are—at the end of it, he can speak with J-a’i and feel like somewhere out there, someone understands.
And then, one day, there’s a knock on the door. Tim briefly entertains fantasies about the men in black before checking the surveillance camera and seeing an alien instead.
Oh well. Alright then.
He opens the door and ushers the visitor in. “J-a’i, I presume?”
The other being looks relieved when he hears his voice. “Tim.”
“The very one.”
Okay. Tim kinda thought J-a’i would be smaller. Tim’s used to short jokes, but having to crane his head back like this feels ridiculous.
“I need to hide,” J-a’i says, looking very serious. Tim would like to return the expression in kind—this is probably a very stressful and dangerous situation for an alien in hiding, and he should give it the proper gravitas—but he’s so happy.
“So you came here?”
“My masking device broke,” J-a’i explains. Ah. That’s why he’s so… uh… colorful. Tim’s really digging the red stripes, though. “I… I had nowhere else to go.”
“Come with me.” Tim leads them to a cupboard, and then opens the secret door leading down. “You never know when you need a bunker.”
“You—“
“Well, do you need to use it or or don’t you?”
“I have finally found a being whose paranoia matches my own,” J-a’i says. He does get into the bunker, though.
“So what now?” Tim asks when they’ve settled down.
J-a’i shrugs. “I’ll probably have to leave.”
“Go to another country?” Tim asks, already mentally mapping out his visa applications.
“Another planet. Home, I think, at least for a while.”
Oh. Right. What do Hzewf visa applications look like? “So we need to get to your ship.”
“Yes.”
“Okay. You left it in Lake Michigan, right? That’s about twelve hours by car. Oh, but,” Tim looks at J-a’i and his very much not human appearance, “should probably only travel in the dark. Luckily, there’s a lot of that in winter. We’ll give your pursuers a few hours, and then I’ll go pack. If the coast is clear, we can leave tomorrow night. What’s the weather like on your planet? Should I bring shorts?”
Instead of an answer, though, he gets a surprised stare. “You’ll come with me?”
“Well, duh.” Tim snorts.
…wait. Uh. Maybe this is too much? J-a’i is self-admittedly desperate to show up here. Just because he didn’t have an alternative, doesn’t mean he wants Tim to invite himself along. None of this stuff is as exciting for him as it is for Tim, and with the bad experience the other creature has recently made with humans—
There’s an expression happening on J-a’i’s face that stops his panic attack in its tracks. Hope. Hope that’s painful because you’re sure that whatever it is you’re being offered will get snatched away from you.
Tim recognizes the emotion for what it is, because he knows it so well.
“Are you sure?” J-a’i asks. “We’d be going to space—“
“J-a’i,” Tim interrupts, “I’ve been waiting to hear these words all my life. Literally. All that’s missing is a kiss and we’d be in the final scene of the Hollywood movie of my dreams.”
“Kissing is that thing you humans do, right? To express affection and/or lust?”
“Yes.” And because Tim’s a fucking sap who has spent too many hours listening to the voice on the other end of a radio: “When we love each other, too.”
J’a-i considers that. “Well. I… wouldn’t be opposed, either. Though I don’t understand how it relates to space travel.”
Tim nudges his shoulder and grins. “Hey, we can work up to that. Tell me some more about your spaceship?”
J’a-i’s whole face lights up when he talks about his ship. Tim’s heard it in his voice before, but it’s pretty awesome to see it in person. Also? He’s sitting next to an alien, talking about spaceships.
Hell yeah. Space, here Tim comes.
(I’m taking prompts until the end of the year.)

Tips for not ruining your trip to Greece
Coronavirus and Medical care
First of all, if you can, it’s better to postpone your trip to Greece for another year. (For the year 2021). Sorry to start my post like this but let me explain. It’s likely you have another corona variant than the locals and if you infect them, their vaccination will be for nothing and they will have to pass more months of a super strict, borderline fascist lockdown. Also... you might be infected with another variant. If you MUST come, please wear a mask at all times and keep distances! (The same goes for Greeks who want to visit other countries).
Tourism is great but too many tourists will get the country back to square one pandemic-wise. If our healthcare system gets overloaded, a tourist won’t get sufficient healthcare either if something happens to them! I mean, our healthcare system is still overloaded due to corona patients so... I don’t know if it’s a good move to come here right now. In case of emergency, I am not sure if you will receive fast or proper care.
Generally, it’s good to know some stuff in Greek about your condition because half of Greece doesn’t speak English. Doctors are likely to understand the condition in English (because most of English health words come from Greece) but I’d say be prepared for good measure. Write your allergens and conditions in Greek on a paper in your wallet and hand it to someone if you need them to know. Learn important words such as “medicine“, “sick“, “It hurts” etc. (or have them written down somewhere. The important thing is that you can say them or show them to Greeks).
You can ask me if you can’t find the translation of some phrases and don’t how you pronounce them. Avoid the Erasmian pronunciation. It was made so foreigners can learn Greek easier, but it sounds alien to Greeks and it’s not likely it’ll help you.
Protection from the elements
I don’t understand how half the globe thinks we are a tropical place or a dessert and then they don’t prepare at all for a tropical place or a dessert when they come here in Summer xD At least being over-prepared would help! So...
Don’t come in Summer??? Yes, I know, it sounds stupid but you really don’t have to come in the peak of tourist season. Coming early May, June, September and October (where the sea is still warm) will get you a good tourist experience with less crowds and heat. If you are disabled and/or easily overwhelmed, avoiding the peak season will probably do you good. You can come any month really. We have different places for different seasons. All it takes is five minutes of googling.
If you come from a less sunny place (no matter your skin color) make sure to always wear more sunscreen than usual!! If the sun is up, always wear sunscreen when going outside - don’t forget your face and nape!!
Avoid going out at 12:00-16:00 and don’t stay under the sun too long! If you catch yourself being outside the hours 12:00-16:00 GET INSIDE no matter how alluring the sea or the pool looks. A sunstroke can rob you of 2-3 days of fun and waste your money.
If you are light skinned, red skin indicates your skin is hurt. (You’d be surprised to learn how many people don’t get it). Cover the red part and don’t continue going out in the sun for long. The rest of your skin is going to become red and peel soon if you don’t take care. If you are out, have the red part very well covered! Moisturizing creams help red skin a lot.
Wear a hat, it only helps! (it can make a small difference when it comes to sunstroke) Also, it’s better to *cover* your skin to protect it from intense sunlight! (no matter your skin color) Don’t be fooled by the heat and start going around in your swimwear for hours!
Swimming doesn’t protect you from the sun! The water reflects the sunlight and you can get even more damage! (Usually people have half of the body out of the water and that’s where the light hits).
When the light starts getting quite low prepare for mosquitos. Mosquito repellent sprays, creams and candles, as well as mosquito nets on the doors and windows, are your friends! Avoid getting near to bodies of sweet water.
Drink lots of water frequently! Take many bottles with you in a bag, I am not joking. Observe your urine to see if it’s darker than usual - if it is, then you need to hydrate more, no matter what you feel you are doing. Don’t drink *frozen* water (just mildly cold, “δροσερό”). Frozen water is not as refreshing and helpful as you think. It can also hurt your neck and lungs if they get exposed to frozen water constantly and make them irritated and swollen. (Lungs get cold because of the water going down near them. It’s rare, but it happens)
Make sure your alcoholic drinks are safe! Ask the locals if any place is notorious for serving adulterated alcoholic drinks and better avoid getting cheap alcohol from the kiosk (unless the kiosk has a stock of a reasonably priced sealed bottles of a certain brand you trust. But then again... still be hesitant).
For your wallet health
Do all the above to avoid sunstrokes and dehydration or say goodbye to your free days and money :P
Exchange homes with a Greek for a month. There are some programs which do that. If you are that type of person, this solution might work for you. You even can stay with your Greek friends for some days, if that’s possible for them.
You don’t have to go to an island. We have plenty of places that are just as gorgeous and more merciful to your wallet. If you want to go to an island, there are some cheaper ones. And, even though each island has a unique history, lots of islands have similar environment and aesthetics.
Avoid tourist traps (trust me, you’ll be attracted to them, even Greeks get attracted there and then regret it :p)  and search the area for other restaurants before sitting somewhere. For cheap but qualitative food use the supermarkets, your local bakery and cooked meal restaurants. (Try ordering from sites like efood.gr and deliveras.gr)
For souvenirs spend money on something that you can’t get in your country. Don’t get a cactus souvenir on a plain pot and say “I got that from Greece” because it won’t show and nobody will care xD Buy something more... obvious. (Ok I don’t mean you have to buy a shirt that says “GREECE”, something more subtle, if you like :p)
You can probably find the same souvenir for cheaper in another less popular tourist area (or even in the shop ten meters down the road!).
