Culture and Translation - S01 E06

This is a bit of a weird episode, in that it feels like not much happened. Because Skam España switched a few things around, it seems like episode 6 shouldn’t be the episode in which to hang out with the characters for a while before shit goes down. But one thing that got me hooked to Skam almost straight away was the way you got to “hang out” with the characters even in small, drama-free moments, and this episode has a couple of clips I really like.

CLIP 1: Monday blues

Es que le metiste un corte (You were razor sharp with him): “Meter un corte” is really hard to translate. It basically means to be really cutting with someone when they aren’t expecting it, in a way that shuts the conversation for good. Which Amira did, over and over, but the dude wasn’t getting the hint.

I do think Nora feels a little bad for the guy, but only because Nora is extremely empathetic with everyone in the world, to the point where it’s surprising when she’s not empathetic.

Viri is a great liar. We will come to find out much of what she says in this scene is a lie, but she has no tells. This is why I think the Selena Gomez shoe line thing was Viri teasing the girls, because she broke character almost immediately. If Viri wanted the girls to believe it, we can see here that she would’ve managed.

Nora’s shirt says, “No means no.” ‘No es no’ was first a slogan for an awareness campaign, promoted by several Spanish city halls, which aimed to curtail sexual abuse and rape during local festivals, such as Sanfermines. There’s also an Axel, Soledad song. And it has of course been slapped on all sorts of merchandise. Like shirts!

The sides of the mirror are tagged with graffiti, by the way.

And also, Eva and Nora are late for first period! They end up skipping it entirely.

CLIP 2: Lucas has feels; Eva’s are stronger

Eva and Lucas are listening to Molly Svrcina’s Fallen Angel. I think the point of the song was lost in how incredibly random the song is. This is a song Lucas recommends Eva listen to. It’s about Lucas, not Eva. Lucas is trying to give a hint to Eva about himself, but Eva’s too focused on the Jorge drama.

While this clip dropped during recess, Eva skipped school. Not sure if Lucas did as well, though.

It’s Viri who shares a birthday with Paris Jackson, as I already wrote in the post for last episode.

Alejandro Reina does a nice bit of acting with his eyes at the 5:22 mark. Lol, Lucas is so fucking tired of the Eva/Jorge drama carousel.

Y tú me caes de puta madre (“And I think you’re fucking great”): Lucas is not just saying that he thinks Eva’s great. He’s saying he really fucking likes Eva (as a friend, that is!).

Es que sigo enfadada (“‘Cause I’m still upset”): This is a sentiment that will be expressed often this week by Eva, Jorge and Lucas. I’ve seen subs that translate it “enfadada” as “angry” and it’s not wrong, but I feel Eva and Jorge are both more upset than angry during this week. Your mileage may vary, though!

CLIP 3: Ship wars

Cullera: Cullera is a beach city in the Valencia region that has been taken over by tourists (or guiris, if you will!). There are some nice sights, but people visit for the beaches. Many Spanish familes own some sort of apartment by the beach, but Cullera is a step up from the usual, which is Torremolinos. A hint about Inés’ parents’ economic status! Cullera means “spoon” in Valencian language, by the way.

Easter break: The 2019 Easter break runs from the 12th of April to the 22th. Coincidentally, there are some rumors that s2 will premiere after Easter break 2019.

Tú no te líes, que el viaje importante es el de Mallorca, ¿eh? (Okay, but don’t lose sight of the important trip, the Majorca trip, huh?): A closer translation would be: “Don’t get sidetracked, the important trip is the Majorca trip, okay?” Which is actually a shorter line, so we should maybe change that, lol.

Que parezcamos ahí dos lapas como estas parejitas que están por ahí (For us to look like two barnacles like those couples you see everywhere): The literal translation would be, “for us to look like two barnacles like those couples that are around,” but that sounded like shade towards Eva and Jorge, who are also broken up this week. It’s not meant as shade, and in fact Eva has no reaction to it, so I reworked it.

Viri’s economic background is hinted through her confusion with job titles. In Spanish, she doesn’t remember if Alejandro’s father is a “director” (which could be translated as director, manager, and even principal, but also CEO) and “directivo” (executive or CEO). I settled for initials salad.

There is a bit of dialogue at the end that was cut from the episode version. The girls present their final arguments in the Viriandro vs Aleviri debate… which ironically, foreshadowed the Norandro vs Alenora shipname wars. It appears as if most of the fandom has settled on Norandro, at last.

Viri: It’s that, it’s like a Greek god.

Cris: What are you, Voldemort or something?

Viri: It’s like, it’s funny because it’s like a Greek god, like Viriandro is a Greek god sort of name. Yeah, it’s super neat.

Cris: It’s a gladiator name, dude!

Almost totally off topic linguistics note: The girls use the English loanword “ship” in the fandom sense. The verb had obviously crossed language lines in fandom spaces years ago, but it became part of mainstream Spanish culture (yes, really) when Operación Triunfo became big last year, and everyone was shipping couples from the show. The interesting part is that Spanish speakers came up with two declensions for the Spanish form of the verb: “yo lo shippeo” (I ship it) and “yo lo shippo” (again, I ship it). People who had been in fandom longer leaned towards “shippeo” (and so do I!), so I find it aesthetically pleasing that the girls favor that declension.

CLIP 4: Eva shoots his shot. It doesn’t go well.

I was certain Jorge’s secret would have to do with one or both his parents being unemployed, so at the time I made note of the fact that one of the apartments he walks by is up for sale. It’s the reddish orange sign at the 10:06 mark.

The song that plays at the end of the clip is Zahara’s El Frío, but it has been edited. These are the lyrics that have made it to the clip: “I didn’t expect that the one who started all the fires would also be the one to put them out. How did you let the cold inside you, it has destroyed everything.”

CLIP 5: Speederman

This has to be a change from my high school years. I did the Cooper test in 3º ESO (the equivalent of 9th grade in the US) and never had to do it again through high school.

More info on the Cooper test, in case you care. Not only was I not tested on a standard 400 m tartan track, but we were also not trained to perform it properly. Ah, high school PE!

Venom premiered in Spain the 5th of October. This clip dropped the 19th of October.

Yes, that is actually how we pronounce Spiderman in Spain.

I love that Nora is into Viri saying she loves anything that has to do with saving the world. Nora is so earnest, lol.

¿O qué vas a hacer, tía? ¿Quedarte en casa llorando? (“Or what do you have in mind, dude? Staying at home, crying?”): Another translation could be, “Or what are you going to do, dude? Stay at home and cry?” but I went with the line in the subs because I thought it flowed better.

Cómo jode que te dejen, ¿eh? (It sucks to be dumped, doesn’t it?): “Sucks” is a lot less charged than “joder,” which is the word Inés actually uses. I guess you’d have to say “fucking sucks” to get the intensity across. You’ll have to make do with Inés’ line delivery.

CLIP 6: Ride of the Valkyries

As it turns out, Alba Planas is also a fan of og Skam, so I’m going to pretend Eva’s string of sorries is also an homage to Tarjei’s delivery.

This scene was shot right outside of Cine Paz.

Pero no me seáis pavas (“But don’t be silly”): Viri says “pavas,” which is hard to translate. Essentially, Viri’s afraid the girls are going to embarrass her in front of Alejandro, either unintentionally or (not unlikely given this group) intentionally. I.e. they’re not going to behave maturely in front of him.

Madre mía (Good heavens): Okay, so I already talked in the post for episode 5 about the way Amira uses interjections that aren’t swear words, and this is an example of it. “Madre mía” literally means “mother of mine” and it’s basically meaningless as an interjection. What matters is the tone you add to it. In this case, Amira’s impatient that the girls are getting distracted chatting about whatever, instead of going into the theater. I don’t love “good heavens” as it has Christian connotations. On the other hand, “geez” feels too short for how impatient Amira sounds.

It took me a while to realize this, but this clip actually has an og equivalent. This would be the clip where Vilde notices William and Sara hooking up, and looks devastated. Skam España chooses to go about it in a totally different way, with the girls backing Viri up as they walk in.

CLIP 7: Tout le monde veut devenir un cat

Sí, hija, sí (“Yeah, girl, yeah”): Jorge actually calls Eva “daughter,” lol. Much like with tío and tía, we might call anyone “son” or “daughter.” I’ve even caught myself using it on my own parents! If I have the right info, this is also common in Latin American countries, except they use “mijo” and “mija,” instead. “Hijo” or “hija” is more affectionate than “tío” or “tía,” although, much like with “madre mía,” it’s used to express a variety of emotions. Here, Jorge is dismayed that his chocolate romance went awry.

Pretty sure those are knockoff peanut M&Ms. Most likely from the Spanish grocery chain Mercadona.

The song that plays at the end of the clip and through the credits is Bely Basarte’s Mariposas. You can find a translation here.

Tomás Aguilera, who plays Jorge, has managed to be almost impossible to find online. However, his instagram bio makes reference to the French version of the Aristocats song Everybody wants to be a cat. It’s adorable.

The girls talk about the Zaorejas random again, Cris notes that he looked young enough as to be in ESO, or MSE, Mandatory Secondary Education. MSE runs through the equivalents of 7th to 10th grade in the US.

Whoaaa, I can’t believe I actually finished RH:PC. All in all, I had some great fun, I mean it was like meeting up with an old friend to chat over a warm cuppa tea…

Here are a shitload of some thoughts I had while playing the game, embellished with dumb gifs because I have the maturity and attention span of a fifth-grader.

FYI, the original ending is like, one of my favourite ending in all the history of jRPGs. Yeah, no kidding. I love the bittersweet feel to it, how it shows Stocke’s growth as a character and how heartbroken his friends are over him having to die for their sake. Most of all, I love that the source of the problem is not addressed (because it just can’t be addressed), but that everything ends up going in the right direction anyway because of SCIENCE! and because the right people are finally in the right places, just as that kind of situation would go in real life. And, uh, confession time, but the final bit between Heiss and Stocke made me bawl like a baby… I mean, the former shot up to become my thrash son problematic fave solely by the strength of that scene. It made me write a fanfic that’s about the length of the sixth Harry Potter book, y’all. That’s some serious shit, I still can’t quite believe it.

So, as you can all probably tell, the thought of them changing that ending… yeahhh, not gonna lie, that was me:

I knew they could not make me like the ending more, because it was already perfect in my humble opinion. So with that in mind, I made the deliberate choice to go in with lowered expectations and in a way, it… worked? I didn’t get that salty about any of the new stuff, mostly because I felt the extended ending and the parts with Nemesia couldn’t ruin anything for me since the core of the game - the heart of what made the DS version works so well - was still there, just a bit more gussied up by those gameplay tweaks and that fancy voiced script. Even when there was something I found dumb or badly executed, I didn’t get annoyed, I just went ‘oh, okay, whatev’ and continued to play. Because I still loved those characters and that ‘verse and it made me happy to be able to experience it again.

(Wait, no, I’m lying, there’s actually one thing that made my blood boil. The fanservicey bits are garbage, and I’ll be glad when the sort of creepy-ass mentality that gets us that moe crap will finally be gone. There, it’s off my chest now.)

I mean, even the art style grew on me, eventually (except for a few select female characters who looked like they were zapped by a moe ray… *beleaguered sigh* oh my poor Valkyrie, what have they done to you?) And in the cases of Marco and Heiss, I actually like their new portraits better! PC!Marco’s got some really cute expressions and PC!Heiss… well, PC!Heiss seems less like the kind of guy who drowns kittens as a hobby. I can almost buy that Raynie trusted him at some point in her life (…almost).

The voice work was quite solid too and that, uh, surprised me?? I even like the English dub better than the Japanese version! Rosch, Stocke and Heiss’ VAs did great jobs imho and I developed a sort of fondness for Gafka and Raul’s voices as well. Raul really sounded like the kind of guy who needs ALL THE CAFFEINE to deal with the sheer amount of shit going on around him, and that made me feel for the guy. You and me both, Lieutenant General… you and me both…

Other than that, here are a few things that made me lol/sigh/feel the feels in no particular order:

- Raynie’s got a new sidequest and it doesn’t have anything to do with her (still kinda badly-written) crush on Stocke?! A sidequest that actually addresses her PTSD??! Atlus, you blew my itty-bitty tiny mind here, you managed to remember that she had a life beyond being Stocke’s love interest!

- At the same time, why is Marco’s possible history about Mimel again? Why couldn’t it be about, oh I don’t know, his past, of which we still know nothing about?? Also, Sonja’s quest could have been about her brobro, you know, what we got instead was a bit… cringeworthy, what with those Stay-in-the-Kitchen overtones. C’mon, Atlus, plz.

- Everybody seems to hate the bad end where Fennel explodes because Stocke gave him a whack, but I love it. It was so, so dumb. It wasn’t as beautiful in its sheer wtf factor as Simmering End, but it was trying, definitely.

- Speaking of Simmering Fury… I’m just gonna leave this here:

Yeah, that speaks for itself, I think.

- Finally, we get the opportunity to beat the crap outta Dias and Selvan! …while they’re riding… giant… mechas??? This should not work, but it did for me (...why???). Also, Noah’s Pope mecha, lord, Noah’s Pope mecha, with his silly little Pope hat! I guess someone on the development team felt the original game needed more mechas.

- In general, Dias and Selvan’s heel-face-turn is the only one I can buy out of all of the new redemption arcs we’ve gotten. Since it’s shown even in the original game that they were acting out of a real desire to make their country better (well, all according to their own definition of better, which is not, uh, everybody’s definition of better), I can get that once confronted with the evidence that they’ve played right into the hand of some homicidal nutso, they’d change their tune. They’ve actually managed to put all the pieces together and find out Heiss’ real identity! ...it didn’t save them in the end, but I’m still proud of my boys.

- Protea willingly turning away from a life of sin, on the other end…

I get that they were trying to give more nuance to an admittedly thin character, but, uh, could they have found a more efficient (read: less OOC) way to make her more sympathetic? Her change of heart comes a little… too abruptly, in my taste. If it had been a gradual thing, I think it would have gone better. Hell, if they wanted us to feel sorry for her, they could have pulled a Cersei Lannister and shown us the less rosy side of marrying a royal for the power it brings you. Sure, money and prestige are all fine and dandy, but is it worth the cost of losing your agency to an asshole husband with control issues? Ask Cersei how it went for her…

- On Hugo’s side of things, myeahhh, I understand what they were going for, but again, it came a little fast? At least this time there was a little foreshadowing and some foundation for his heel-face-turn… still, the fact that his faith in Noah was genuine is nice and all, but, uh, I dunno, I feel like he was too far gone off the deep end at that point for a complete change in attitude? Dude went on fire and smiled.

- …but I like what they did with him in that possible history, where he mended his ways because he caused Noah’s death by being his usual asshole self. It could have been a good way to build up some sympathy for him if we could compare and contrast this ending with the one he originally got… that way, we could be sad seeing how that he did have the potential to be a good person but chose instead to chase after the trappings of power, discarding what made him a precious disciple in Noah’s eyes…

- Speaking about Noah, I think his whole arc had some good ideas, but I would preferred it if they added a little more build-up leading up to the reveal that he’s extended his lifespan with Thaumatech? Maybe have Stocke wonder why this Noah looks like he’s so young while his Noah is an old man? Have a few citizens comment on how surely, their prophet must have been blessed by a divine power since he’s aged so little over the years? I dunno, really… Still, I like the idea that he’s gotten tired of the way his people depend on him without ever trying to stand on their own. No wonder he’s all, ‘peace, homies, Noah out’ when you save him in the main timeline. It fits in nicely with the general theme we had in the original game of Alistel having to grow as a country by stopping using their faith as a crutch.

- As for Heiss’ ending, well, it does make me lol that’s it’s all about him being:

More seriously, I’m kinda worried for Stocke’s sake? Poor boy is never going to have a moment of peace, is he? Then again, this new-and-improved Heiss seems oddly… cheerful? And… happy?? You guys, he nearly apologized to Stocke for messing with his memory!!! …well, nearly, he’s not ready for such deep self-reflection, y’all. And now I’m wondering how the rest of the party felt about him still being around. I’m almost surprised Raynie didn’t try throwing him off Nemesia’s boat in the last chapter. I would have cheered for her.

…man, I almost feel a plotbunny coming on, hmm.

Anyway, I feel like they meant for his survival to be heartwarming, but I’m, uh, just freaked out on Stocke’s behalf, tbh. Heiss really needs to give Precious Nephew some space. Somehow, though, I don’t think this will be the case… as Gravity Falls would put it, Stocke’s life is Heiss’ soap opera, after all.

…poor, poor Stocke…

So, I watched bits of “Season 2″ of English dub LWA on Netflix...

Keep in mind, I only watched one full episode (Episode 18) and kind of just skipped to the important scenes of 17, 19, 20, and 22-25. I didn’t watch episode 14-16 and 21 (you’ll find out why I didn’t watch this one later). Spoilers under cut.

Ya’ll already know the subs were fucked up, so I’m not really gonna get into that.

They changed “it’s your belief in yourself that makes up your magic” into “believing in yourself is your magic.” So...that’s better? I guess? It’s certainly a lot less of a mouthful. “A believing heart is your magic” still sounds way fucking better, though.

They changed some of the pronunciation of the spells, which I can understand. It’s probably just a translation thing or it was to make things easier for the VAs. (Also, Metamorphie Fasciesse as “Metamorphie “Fosciesse” is completely understandable because Fasciesse, when said quickly, can sound like “facist”).

Really didn’t appreciate them spoiling Episode 18 by saying what Akko drew for the Stanship. Like...that’s what made Ep. 18 so epic and funny. We didn’t know what the hell Akko drew up, so when the fucking mech came out, we were all like, “OH SHIIIIIIT!!!”

Akko’s VA kind of forced Akko’s enthusiasm a little too much in Ep. 18, imo.

Oddly enough, Diana’s VA was...a lot better. She did quite well in Episode 20 when Diana is showing Akko the family library. I still think she doesn’t really capture Diana’s “oujo-sama” tone, but she did much better. She even used a fancy word here and there, though could’ve used more since that just fits Diana’s personality and upbringing more. But definitely an improvement from “last season.”

Amanda got better, too, surprisingly. She wasn’t great in the first half, but she’s a lot more tolerable now. Guess I got used to it?

Croix was actually pretty good. There were a few times when I thought it sounded weird, but overall, the VA did a good job. (BUT WHY CROY THO)

BUT CHARIOT.

OH MY GOD CHARIOT.

I’M SO SORRY.

Listen, I know Japanese dubs are also exaggerated because hey, they’re still voice actors! You gotta exaggerate shit in order to get your acting across.

So obviously, things are actually really cheesy-sounding in Japanese dubbed animes much like how the English dubs are really cheesy-sounding.

But at least the original was able to capture a sense of protectiveness over Akko and a tone of hostility towards Croix in a believable way!

The dub just...OVERLY EXAGGERATED IT.

I don’t even know what her VA was trying to go for!

It just sounded so forced!

Not just in Episode 15, but in all of the episodes!

It just sounds so forced and awkwardly delivered!

This is why I couldn’t bring myself to watch Episode 21! It’s such a heartfelt, tug-at-your-heartstrings episode, and the scene between Akko and Ursula at the base of Wagandea is so touching and wholesome.

SO I COULDN’T BRING MYSELF TO WATCH IT

BECAUSE IF THE EMOTIONAL SCENES OF 15 AND 22 SOUND WEIRD WHAT THE HELL IS 21 GOING TO SOUND LIKE

I decided to only watch LWA in Japanese from now on, and if I’m using Netflix to do that, I’ll just play it in the background when I’m doing work or something.

Oh, Andrew is still my favorite in terms of English dubs. His VA did great, and he actually still sounds like an 18-year-old, unlike his Japanese VA who makes him sound like he’s in his 20s.

Q: Firstly, please tell us about your impression on the songs when you first listened to them.

Midorikawa: When I first listened to Fortissimo of Fluttering Wings, I thought, “Oh, this time (the key) is low.” I thought maybe all but Murase-kun’s opinion got through, but it turned out it was a slip up. In the end, the finalized key made me go, yeah, this is how it should be (laugh). There’s no way it would change so drastically all of the sudden. But it’s also because I’m already so used to the songs from the first series, the finalized key gives out more of that fine vibe after all. So I thought, well, I guess I have do my best (laugh).

Q: Then how did the actual recording go?

Midorikawa: Unlike the first series, I was the first member to go into the recording. In the first series, I was the last and the fact that I had to follow up the others put me on a pressure. So this time I guess I’ll take advantage of the opportunity (laugh). I can experience this feeling of “Everyone, I’ll leave the rest to you!”

Q: Please tell us the appeal of each song.

Midorikawa: I really like the lyrics of both songs. Just like the first series, the lyrics take the content from the game, which is great. I bet everyone will enjoy the songs by connecting the dots. But the lyrics can’t simply write out the content – it has to establish itself into proper lyrics of a song. I think that’s wonderful. Also, I cracked up a bit at the line “Hibiki wataru kassai o” in Neo Sanctuary. Wataru isn’t the one who sings that line, but if that’s the case I wanted them to let me sing it instead (laugh). Speaking of Eichi’s lines, “fine (the end)” [1] has a nuance of a spoken line, and indeed it felt like Eichi had to do the job for this one (laugh). As for myself, it was a line I was looking forward to sing as well, and I hope it can please everyone.

Q: Ensemble Stars has been extending its reach through appearances in various kinds of media. Could you promote the series to the readers who have not yet been exposed to it?

Midorikawa: I think there are times you may think his true feelings are still somewhat unclear. I wonder if it will be addressed in the future event stories. No matter what people say, I like my own character the best, so I want to really treasure those who are giving their support. I also think if a villain isn’t worth defeating, the protagonists and the others won’t shine so brightly, so I thought I should also reach the very limits of the evil (laugh).

Q: Please give a message to the fans who are looking forward to the release!

Midorikawa: There’s a long time between the excitement of knowing a CD release is planned until it’s actually released, so the heat of that excitement may be cooling down, (laugh) but thank you so much for waiting! But to make up for that, I hope you’ll enjoy listening to it, and it’ll make me happy if you can tell me your thoughts no matter how small it is. So please give us your support.

Q: Firstly, please tell us about your impression on the songs when you first listened to them.

Eguchi: Fine has released two songs. But this time I love how you can feel the beat in the songs, so I was looking forward to singing them. They are good songs that won’t lose to their predecessors, and I enjoyed listening to the demo. If you have been following fine’s stories, the lyrics will take you on a ride, so I think that’s something you can enjoy.

Q: Then how did the actual recording go?

Eguchi: Unexpectedly, fine is a unit that has a lot going on. So if I were to get more in-character and put too much emotion into every single line, it may be a bit dangerous (laugh). Things such as his carefreeness, or how much Wataru’s character should be put into the singing are what I think about every time, including this time. The previous series was fun with its circus theme and the like, and I think the entertainer side of Wataru was able to be put under a spotlight. But this time, rather than to entertain, they’re singing about themselves and they value things such as fine’s established situation and feelings. In that sense, the ‘flavoring’ may not be that strong this time.

Q: Please tell us the appeal of each song.

Eguchi: The lyrics in Fortissimo of Fluttering Wings talk about the importance of comrades and their wish to move forward with everyone. At the end of the first chorus, there’s a line “Now let’s go, with these friends” [1] which feels like fine is brought together and I like it. As for Neo Sanctuary, I was the second to record after Midorikawa-san, and in the chorus before climax, Midorikawa’s solo line, “fine” that was read as “the end” [see Midorikawa’s t/n #1] left a deep impression – it was really wonderful. Combined with Midorikawa-san’s way of singing, it’s a really awesome part!

Q: Ensemble Stars has been extending its reach through appearances in various kinds of media. Could you promote the series to the readers who have not yet been exposed to it?

Eguchi: Story-wise, I wonder what fine’s charm is? I mean you can say they’re the roots of all evil (laugh). I think the way you can enjoy fine is how you follow them along with the story, as you ask yourself how they ended up that way. For those who had only recently taken interest in Ensemble Stars!, I think you’ll be able to find all sorts of fun if you follow the story. If you listen to these songs again after that, you may have a different point of view. Wataru’s charm… On the surface, he seems carefree and you can’t tell what he’s thinking, but I also think you can’t really see his core. I think the gap between his outside and inside is his charm. I hope someday there’ll be opportunity where I’ll be able to act out that part of him.

Q: Please give a message to the fans who are looking forward to the release!

Eguchi: I think those who listened to fine’s songs in the first series were able to have a lot of fun, but this time we also have wonderful songs. I really want you to look forward to them, and I also can’t help but look forward to the finished product. They’re songs I can recommend with pride, so please check them out.

Q: Firstly, please tell us about your impression on the songs when you first listened to them.

Hashimoto: Firstly, the song names are so cool! Apparently the name “fine” also means “the end” in music term, so I thought it’s very like them to have “Fortissimo” this time, following “Symphonia” from last time. Fine’s image is the color white, but Neo Sanctuary has a dark image and you can see its coolness that has a slight edge to it. This song was a bit unexpected, but the moment I knew fine can also bring out coolness like this, I was looking forward to the recording.

Q: Then how did the actual recording go?

Hashimoto: The vocal balance in Fortissimo of Fluttering Wings is nice, but in it there’s also an atmosphere that is brought out from the relationship among the four members, which is something I kept in mind while singing. In the parts “We are not alone | We chose the irreplaceable present | These are new wings that fly across the new sky” [1] and also where everyone sings together at the end, I could also feel they’re saying, “Let’s go with the four of us!” – I hope I was able to show that in my singing. I was also thinking of bringing out lots of cool points in Neo Sanctuary, but after listening to Midorikawa-san’s “fine (the end)” [see Midorikawa’s t/n #1], what I was thinking didn’t matter anymore (laugh). It was just so cool, there’s nothing I can do about it! Even when I listened to the demo tape, I tried to predict how Midorikawa-san would handle that line, but after actually listening to it, you are struck with this addicting feeling that surpasses even that of taking pictures with a side peace sign! It’s really wonderful.

Q: Please tell us the appeal of each song.

Hashimoto: In Neo Sanctuary, it would be the parts before the chorus like “It will no longer be shaken by anything | This story that was made | It crosses the glittering rainbow” [2] and “Our hearts still refuse to lament | This resounding applause | We will accept it with all we have.” [3] I think these parts show what fine is pursuing. You can picture the scene of fine accepting the resounding applause with all they have. I thought lines like these may be what they’re after, and I like it quite a lot. As for Fortissimo of Fluttering Wings, it simply felt like I was the one who sang, and it felt nice. The line “I want to burn the scene into your eyes” [4] felt so good to sing! At first it was just [Yuzuru] and Tori, but after that the four of them sing the line together. Yeah, it’s so cool, isn’t it? (laugh) It felt good being able to head out with style with everyone.

Q: Ensemble Stars has been extending its reach through appearances in various kinds of media. Could you promote the series to the readers who have not yet been exposed to it?

Hashimoto: Yuzuru’s position is a butler, but as a member of fine, I intend to act as him so that fine can shine brightly. Fine members get along, but there’s this peculiar sense of distance. Wataru and the young master like Eichi way too much, and when Yuzuru is with someone other than Tori, he basically becomes a bit more modest. When he’s alone with Tori, he would say terrible things, but when the four of them are together he’s back being a butler, so I mean, it’s a mysterious relationship. But, if they have something in common it would be how everyone inclines themselves towards Eichi-sama. So please witness Eichi-sama’s mesmerizing coolness! Also, recently I have started to feel Yuzuru’s sensuality. I’ve always loved moles under the eyes, and top that with how much the cards exhibit the menacing atmosphere! I think Yuzuru is in charge of fine’s sexual appeal (laugh). But when he’s together with Tori, he shows his cute side and shows so much love, so I want you to observe that kind of Yuzuru too. It would be great if everyone can understand Yuzuru’s character.

Q: Please give a message to the fans who are looking forward to the release!

Hashimoto: The world of Ensemble Stars! is expanding, and I believe there are many things to look forward to such as anime and stage adaptations, and the second series of the CDs. First, I’d like you to purchase the CD and listen to it until your eardrums are torn! (laugh) This time we have cool songs, so I think you’ll be able to see a different side to fine. I’m looking forward to it, and I hope all of you feel the same. Please give us your support.

Q: Firstly, please tell us about your impression on the songs when you first listened to them.

Murase: When I sang in the first CD, I remember they were really cool songs, so this time I was looking forward to singing the new songs as well. As for the two songs, it wouldn’t be surprising to have either one as the A-side. The tempo is nice, but it’s still very like fine. They’re really cool, and I was enchanted by them.

Q: Then how did the actual recording go?

Murase: I kept in mind to sing with fun, carefreely and untainted. I’d also treasure the feeling of “the four of them are having fun working together.” I’d heard much of the background to Neo Sanctuary. While I thought it’s going to be difficult, I tried to sing giving out a wafting feel of a ruler and with more power than usual.

Q: Please tell us the appeal of each song.

Murase: In Fortissimo of Fluttering Wings, although it’s not my part, I think its appeal would be the line in the second verse: “Surely, next time we can use different means | To wish for a future.” [1] Fine is not a ruler anymore, but it seems like they have found something else. It has a bright melody that points towards the future, and it’s overflowing with hope. In the midst of that, I could feel that they are looking at the future with positivity. As for Neo Sanctuary, I guess it would be “fine (the end)”, after all! [see Midorikawa’s t/n #1] Of course from when I looked at the lyrics, I thought, “Ah, ‘the end’ came up” and it already left an impact at that time. But when I listened to Midorikawa-san’s singing, it’s right before the last chorus; it’s the most climatic part. So it left a really deep impression. It’s a spoken line, so it’s a great contrast to the part that followed. Sound-wise, it’s also a cool part.

Q: Ensemble Stars has been extending its reach through appearances in various kinds of media. Could you promote the series to the readers who have not yet been exposed to it?

Murase: Tori is overconfident, but he also has a careless side, and there are people who would keep him in check. He would put his energy and do his utmost best in all sorts of things, and I think that hardworking side of him is his charm. I think he’s a boy who will look adorable when getting bullied, so I hope you can enjoy his interaction with characters other than fine members as well. Fine has a strong impression of it being Eichi-san’s unit, doesn’t it? (laugh) Tori adores him very much, and there are also others who are also the same, so I feel his existence is a must in this unit.

Q: Please give a message to the fans who are looking forward to the release!ine

Murase: This time, we have songs that are cool with cool tunes, and bring out the feel of the characters and the personality of the unit. Please look forward to them as you wait for the release.

I don’t hold miles, Kerry, and Grey in a high regard when it comes to their writing abilities. At least, when it comes down to writing a serialized show like RW/BY.

Considering the number of times where you attacked the writers, specifically Miles, and the amount of misinterpretation and blatant bashing and manipulation of facts, everyone who cares knows this and knows you’re biased as fuck against them so your words hold as much weight as a feather here.

Look, the Chorus Trilogy of RvB was good. Sure, it had some questionable bits (Like pretty much putting Felix in nearly every episode), but it was still enjoyable. We got to see Doc again, We got to see F.I.L.L.S/Sheila again, and Tucker’s sword-key was used for a plot point.

It was good.

Notice how Dudebalde’s one question part example isn’t the question of how Doc came back, how O’Maliey manifested, how Miles wouldn’t stop throwing in characters but concerns screentime concerning a character voiced by Miles. AKA that is a rehash of “Jaune too much screentime” And this equally bullshit considering Felix is one of the main villains and is always in the company of the other villain thus for the villains to have a presence in the story, Felix HAS to be in the episode.

Camp Camp was enjoyable. Yeah, the Hitler jokes got old in that one episode, and there were some other questionable things in there (like how some characters are portrayed, and forced to give sympathy to despite having not earned it), but it was enjoyable. I could laugh at that Romeo and Juliet parody sequel, and Nikki’s fourth-wall awareness.

It was good.

Again, the example doesn’t work, this time because you’re questionable example doesn’t have a specific instance so how would one improve on it. You were able to give a specific albeit totally incorrect example above and now you give a possible correct but too vague example here. The two definitive wrongs and you used them both in succession. Jesus.

Chibi had a lot of episodes that were either hit-or-miss. Regardless, season one had a lot of episodes (more than the first two volumes combined if you don’t count WoR). Still,the Jaune asking Weiss thing got old in Volume 2, and there was no way that it could become likable just by putting it in a comedic setting. But there were some enjoyable bits. Like those comic adaptations one, and Yang’s training montage.

It was good.

Anything concerning Jaune you have no right to argue in due to your massive bias against the guy and the guy who voices him as well as your inability to remove personal bias from your analysis. And again. your description of RWBY Chibi being hit or miss doesn’t work because that’s comedy as a whole (Being hit or miss by nature) thus useless as criticism. And now you’ve screwed up again, both times and in quick succession. Ugh...

But RWB/Y is the first time the writers have to make something with original characters, that isn’t episodic orcomedic.

They aren’t in their comfort zone.

You’re wrong on two levels. One, RWBY is classified as a Dramedy like Red Vs. Blue and thus has comedy in it so your comedic point is invalid.

Two: Red Vs. Blue stopped being episodic back in Season 6 with each episode either setting up or progressing the current plotline in a serial manner. And by your own admission, they did a good job on Chorus. So your episodic point is invalid.

They have nothing to follow, and this is why I dislike Volume 4. It just felt like nothing was planned. Four Relics? - Thrown in there to make it look cool (despite the fact that this idea was a cliché for so long, that it’s probably written in stone), and Jaune’s unnecessary upgrade (Seriously. He just sacrificed defense so that way he could do two side swings, two diagonal swings, and one overhead swing; as compared to the single sword that could parry, stab, and do many more things that a great sword could not.).

Well, this is hilarious as fuck.

1. Acting like nothing was planned despite the fact that this season WAS the planning season thus it is BUILDING the plans. Not to mention the pacing in this Volume was better than the previous Volumes which had a more steady stream of plot progression and character progression than before. Meaning this Volume was probably planned out, especially since Monty planned teh outline of RWBY with the writers as well so that’s crap.

2. Surprise, Jaune is getting bashed here! Not only is the upgrade only shown in the final episode of the Volume and said episode didn’t have Jaune as the focus no matter how much whining is made thus we haven’t seen the full extent, not only does it make sense to give Jaune the tactician the ability to switch the style he has between versatility and defensive to power and offense thus giving his team the edge in whatever they need at the time but you are arguing the practicality of a greatsword in a world of sniper scythes, shotgun gauntlets, pistol whips, rifle javelins, purse Gatling guns and so on!

3. And this is the funniest thing: You have not said a word about the Maidens despite the fact that it is confirmed that the MAIDENS were thrown in because it was cool and the relics are CONFIRMED to be planned originally, thus you completely missed the mark.

Nothing feels as if it was planned, and that’s why this Volume felt like Dawn of Justice. People wanted it. People were hyped for it. But it just didn’t live up to the hype. Yang’s complex character arc? - her nightmares and panic attacks are never mentioned after she gets her prosthetic. - Look, I get that animation is hard,and that it takes effort. - Y’know what isn’t hard? - Having a character just talk.

No, it’s just like Volume 1 and 2: Build up to a climax. Does this mean people should judge RWBY entirely on Volume 1 alone despite the fact that RWBY is a continuous story? Because this is equally foolish.

And has it not occurred to you that maybe this show made by a small company using new software, without their main animator and a limited amount of time while producing another show (chibi) and mentoring a new writer on a much older, more well respected show (Red Vs.Blue) And thus they don’t have all the time in the fucking world to do this. Apparently not, or it did and your realized you couldn’t bitch about it so you ignored it.

It’s becoming increasingly obvious that the writers are running out of ideas as to how to progress the story. Hell! They had to make Ruby state why she’s doing this journey when the audience already knew why she was doing this journey. We don’t need to be filled in on what we already know. It simply felt as if it were filler designed to give Ruby extra lines to remind us that she’s the main character.

Or, here me out, Ruby was telling other people why she was going to Mistral and thus informing the people or it was a recap style in which Ruby was restating it to ease the audience into it. I don’t know because you conveniently don’t bring up a specific instance or quote!

Also, running out of ideas huh? Are you sure that’s it and it’s not, I dunno, Volume 4 being build up thus the purpose of the Volume was to set things up for Volume 5 and not to advance the plot that far, considering the focus was on character interaction, character development and world building.

I want the show to get better, I really do. But the writers have no intent on listening to any criticism, and their lack of communication with the VAs shows that even they have some issues with how the writing is going. If they had explained to them as to what was going on, they could have offered some advice as to how to write their character.

- But they don’t. In fact, Arryn had to issue an actual apology for voicing her concerns as to how the character she was chosen to voice was acting. I don’t know if it was her own choice to do so, or if it was the writers that made her do it, but regardless, not even the voice actors know what’s going on.

Well, they have no intent on listening to criticism from people whole, manipulate facts and attack them and they have every right to do so. Even if the criticism is actual criticism and not attempts to control the show for their own agenda, the writers can still choose to rebuff criticism if they feel it isn’t needed. And considering Miles seems to be a frequent practitioner of self deprecation, if he feels it’s going alright, I’d give him a fair chance.

And you want proof you manipulate the facts? you said Arryn was apologizing for what she said on Always Open when the Twitter post is about her clarifying what she meant, which is stated to be an apology to try and make the writers look bad through the image of forcing Arryn to apologize which, as a concept, is stupid considering Arryn doesn’t work on Rooster Teeth, has other voice acting jobs and they can’t fire her because she’s a main character VA meaning if she was being mistreated as you say, she can speak up and teh writers will have to do as she says.

They get no input. They don’t get to voice their opinions about how the script is being written. It simply feels as if they’re just there to look pretty and voice the characters.

While the writers get to have all the glory of writing such an epic storyline that could do with some improvement.

Mind proving that? Mind showing us a video or tweet or anything that says they have to say the lines exactly as they are written? Because you apparently ahve never heard of ad libbing where a Voice actor can just make up or change a line on the spot, which is very much a possibility. Proof? One of the most iconic and defining lines of the horror movie villain Freddy Krueger (”Welcome To Primetime bitch!” is an ad lib so it’s entirely possible. Especially since you would need to animate everything AFTER the lines are recorded to properly sync the libs. Hence why english dubs in anime are either shit or new mouth flaps are added.

Like I said before: I’d like for them to plan out at least three volumes in advance to at least, show that they have a plan and that they aren’t shoehorning new things to make the show sound ‘cool.’

It would alleviate some concerns.

Like a certain animator who constantly threw in shit because it was cool, either spoiling plot points or character moments or bring a character in too early or completely fucking over the established universe and rules? Yeah, nice try there, unless I see a post you made criticizing Monty, I’m assuming bias against the current writers.

Also, would it kill them to hire more writers instead of spending that money on one-shot actors? - Seriously, am I the only one who has a problem with this? - All that money, WASTED! Just so they could say that they had TeamFourStar and Funimation actors in their show? - It just doesn’t feel worth it.

Like at all.

No, you are not. I actually agree that was a waste of money and could have be used better. However, this still doesn’t excuse the fact that you have manipulated the facts, lied several times and used manipulative language to try and get the readers to hate the writers. Even this point, the only one I agree with, is pretty tainted considering that Monty wasted money getting Jen Talyor to voice Salem, the main villain and not some random randos.

This was just a giant bitch fest against the writers and I advise you to shut up or learn to make criticisms that aren’t the result of misinformation and bias.

Persona 5 - A Review

I should probably preface this by saying that the screenshots I’m using for this review are not my own, since Atlus has extremely strict policies about sharing footage of this game; PS4 Share features are completely unusable. The ones I do have, I got off of Google.

I should also probably mention that this is my first Persona game; I never played the previous titles, so I’m not biased towards the franchise in any way and I had no idea what to expect going into it.

I was originally pretty iffy about getting this game, despite my love for JRPGs. I think I was a little worried about the micromanaging aspects and the deadline system. After Lightning Returns, I sorta avoided games with deadlines and limited time since I didn’t want to deal with the anxiety that comes with it. I like playing games at my own pace, and I also like to completely see EVERYTHING a game has to offer, and games with a limited time system obviously means you’ll have to miss out on certain things unless you follow a strict point-by-point guide that somehow lets you do all the things. From what I saw of this game, it seemed like it would be stressful having to manage social stats, relationships with people, a school life, etc, all while being a magical thief that literally steals hearts.

So yeah, this game was definitely an impulse buy for me and, truth be told, I don’t regret it for a second. I got totally taken for a ride.

The first thing you should know if you plan on playing this game is that you need to have a lot of free time on your hands. This game is such a time sink that I basically lost track of the days. Once you’re in, you are IN. You immediately become attached to these characters and basically live out your life as this unnamed protagonist, raising various social stats such as knowledge and charm to name a few, maintaining strong bonds with the people around you, tackling high school life including getting pop quizzes and doing exams. It can be pretty overwhelming the first time around, at least probably if you’re a newcomer to the franchise like me. I even got a game over very early in the game cause I procrastinated too much and was met with the deadline. I overestimated how much time I actually had to do the stuff I wanted to. It takes a while to get into the groove of this game, but once you know where everything is, you start planning what you want to do, which skills you wanna develop and people you want to spend time with. It can be a lot to deal with, but it does feel rewarding when you max things out and learn to become more efficient.

The story, for a JRPG, is pretty impressive. You play a regular young Joe Shmoe who got unfairly tried for standing up to a shady powerful man and is now labeled a delinquent. He gets sent under the care of a cafe owner for probation and becomes a student in Shujin Academy where he ends up stumbling upon some weird shit, forms friendships with various other young misfits and they form the Phantom Thieves, a group of kids who seek to change the hearts of criminals and horrible adults so they’ll grow a conscience, own up to their horribleness and redeem themselves. That’s all I want to say about the story since I don’t want Atlus to sue me for posting spoilers. But like I said, I was extremely impressed by the story in this game, especially being a JRPG. I say that because, let’s be honest, JRPG stories are normally very predictable and endlessly cheesy. Of course, this game has those moments where it’s so clear how Japanese and Anime the game is from how the characters speak and whatnot, but there were a lot of points in the story where I genuinely had no idea what to expect and certain plot twists I didn’t see coming.

Not to mention pretty much all the characters were very interesting and likable that it’s so easy to form attachments to each of them. Well, except for the protagonist, of course. I’m not sure what it is with JRPGs but it’s very often in games like this where the protagonist is completely mute and not even the slightest bit interesting. Maybe it’s so that it makes it easy for you to put yourself in their shoes, but I was never a fan of that. I prefer protagonists that have their own voice and distinct personality, so I personally wouldn’t mind if more Japanese games started taking a page from Western games when it comes to this kind of stuff rather than just have milquetoast, blank protagonists. That’s one gripe I have in regards to the story elements. Another big one is how empty and meaningless a lot of the dialogue choices really are. Oftentimes you’d see two or three options that basically consist of different versions of saying the same thing. And as far as I can tell, the options don’t really have any lasting effects either. If you’re a dick to somebody, they won’t remember you were a dick. A lot of the options also give you the illusion of choice; the game makes you think that there’s a decision to be made when really there’s only one outcome anyway. These things are basically my biggest problems with the game; it lacked weight when it came to the protagonist and the dialogue system. (Oh yeah, you also can’t be gay, which I was a little salty about but eh, I guess I’ll let it slide. It probably would’ve been too much to expect anyways.)

But enough of that, let’s get to the good part; the combat system. You have no idea how much I adore turn-based combat in JRPGs. I haven’t had this much fun with a JRPG since World of Final Fantasy and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, which are pretty similar to Persona 5 now that I think about it. I loved the hell out of the combat in this game and also the Persona collecting and creating. It did a great job of teaching you how everything worked and letting you differentiate between the skill types, Persona types, etc. Unlike the real-world aspects of the game that overwhelmed me, I was able to digest the combat system pretty quickly. Fusing Personas to create new, more powerful ones is also a lot of fun, I find. I could spend an hour or two just in the Velvet Room alone fusing and strengthening Personas, filling up the Persona Compendium (gotta catch ‘em all, after all). So yeah, honestly I don’t think I have anything bad to say about the combat system. It’s extremely enjoyable and easy to get used to.

By the way, I have to say that this game is one of the most visually intriguing games I’ve ever played. Stylish is honestly the perfect word to describe it as a whole. Everything is constantly moving and the transitions between battles especially are just cool as fuck. The dungeon designs and especially the Persona designs are something to behold. It all just looks sooooo damn good. I’m always so excited when making new Personas cause I can’t wait to see what they look like. I also get very excited whenever it’s time to go to a new dungeon--or Palaces, as they’re called in-game. Each one has its own unique setting and theme depending on the person in charge of it. It was all just so.... cool. I know I sound lame right now, but I swear to god I don’t know what else to say about it, I was just so thoroughly impressed by this game’s style and aesthetic.

Oh yeah, and I rarely talk about the music in games, but the soundtrack meshes perfectly with the overall look and feel of the game. I found myself humming and singing along to the songs after a while, and they got stuck in my head afterward. As far as the English voice acting goes, I also liked it for the most part. Of course there are some cringey parts, that comes with the territory, but overall I think the VAs did really well. I think I recognized a couple of their voices, too.

I spent around 80 hours in my first playthrough of the game, and with all the stuff that carries over from that save data to a New Game+, my experience with this game is far from over cause there’s still so much I haven’t seen from it even despite the amount of time I’ve spent on it. It is a HUUUGE game with a lot of content, so you definitely have to keep that in mind before buying.

I think I’ll give this game a solid 8/10. Next to World of Final Fantasy, I think this is the best JRPG I’ve played in a long while. I do have some problems with it, and it probably isn’t for everyone; if you’re not really a fan of JRPGs then I’m not sure how much you’d enjoy it. It’s not as action-oriented as, say, Final Fantasy XV, so if you’re looking for something more FFXV-ish then it would probably be wise not to get this game. But if you love turn-based combat, monster collecting and micromanaging the life of a high-schooler, this is right up your alley. All I can say is that this won’t be my last Persona game, that’s for sure.

This morning I rear ended someone on the freeway. The car I hit (a big work van) has little to no damage, none we could see. My car (2007 Toyota Prius) is very smashed in the front. Pedestrian was hit by my car while crossing a road located within a private property (a community college) in Brampton, Ontario (Canada) 2. I was in no position to clearly see the pedestrian in advance as the pedestrian suddenly appeared from behind the huge pile of snow on the side of the road. The pedestrian was walking from the parking lot and came onto the road from a blind spot. 3. I was driving at 30kms/hrs and saw the pedestrian just before I hit the pedestrian. 4. The pedestrian was NOT using the designated pedestrian crosswalk but was jaywalking on the road in attempt to cross the road. 5. I applied brakes as soon as I saw the pedestrian on my way but the pedestrian got hit by the time finished applying the breaks. I think my car came in contact with the pedestrian when the car had almost stopped possibly causing the minimum impact. Pedestrian seemed to be all right (not injured) but was slightly in pain due to the hit as my car hit her in the thigh. She did not fall down and was still able to walk (but was crying due to the shock) 6. I called 911 (both cops and ambulance) and they didnt charge me with offence. 7. The Police Officer concluded that it was not my fault after he confirmed with the witnesses that I actually tried to stop the car and that the pedestrian was jaywalking and not using the pedestrian walk for cross the road. The police accident report makes no mention of my fault. 9. Despite repeated phone calls to them, they never called me back as their examiner was on holiday. Then when we finally agree that a price of 500 for my car in January 08 and that took some haggling, the cheque never and so I started chasing them down in early February. I am then informed that I did not disclose a speeding violation on my application and they would have to listen to the tapes of my applying to verify this. Again this took several weeks, and I again had to pursue them for an answer to which they then said I had applied on the internet so no record of a phone conversation. The internet application was misleading, asking for what I believed was 3 years worth of offenses. I've only ever had 2 speeding offenses in my entire life - both speed cameras, just over the limit. The first was at 6 a.m. and I passed a bus pulling over to stop and as I passed it got flashed. The second on the day I found my dad had days to live and I was rushing to catch a flight, and as in both instances was doing 42 mph in a 30 mph zone for a very short period. Nonetheless, I was speeding and paid my fines. I wrote to the insurance company and apologised for not telling them of the other speeding ticket from 4 years and 9 months earlier as I forgot about it. But I admitted it, and apologised in writing. Then then came back to me saying that there would be additional premium to pay before I would get paid for my car. Well, its October 08, and I finally got a letter from the insurers saying they are not paying me as I failed to pay the additional premium requested and they were not going to renew my policy. I have never been asked even after repeated letters to them how much the additional premium was, and what I should do. No replies. I have asked for my car back which they agreed to pay for, and now they state there is nothing they can do, and it is their final decision. I went to the financial ombudsman and unbelieveably DID NOT get a reply from them. I've even spoken to one of their survey staff who tells me that they are incredibly busy and it was probably put aside and not dealt with. I'm at a total loss as to where I stand and how to pursue this without spending more than the accident and car was worth. I've written to their data protection officer and obtained copies of all documentation pertaining to this, so by their records can verify all this information quite clearly. Finally, I maintained my cool with them at all times. Never once did I raise my voice or become unprofessional with them. My questions are: 1. Can I legally request my car back as it has never been paid for? 2. Were they taking money for policy on a car they knew that through mileage alone, they would never pay for loaner car, or to have repaired? 3. This has meant over 30 letters and more phone calls than that to deal with, and rarely do they call you back or reply at all. Can I claim for this time and distress? 4. Am I totally wasting my time? SO I FINISHED THE GAME AND…

It was…umm…wow, I don’t even know what to say. My mind’s kind of on overdrive even though I decided to wait a few hours so I could slow down a little but I’m still…wow. THAT TRIAL. I’m an incoherent mess right now.

Well I’ll start with Junko because I don’t know where to begin with Hajime. I’ll leave him for last because I’ll probably end up babbling about him the most.

JUNKO’S BACK AND BETTER THAN EVER. Seriously, she is the best. I love Junko so much. I’d never, ever want to meet someone like her in real life of course and I think she’s a terrible person in every sense of the word, but she is such an entertaining villain and I love her so much. Seriously, she is one of the best villains in the history of villains. Her design’s great, her voice and the way she talks is great, her fourth wall jokes are great, turning into a gigantic version of herself and getting a 3D model is great, her plan is so crazy, so Junko, I just have to love it. She’s such a fantastic villain and I don’t know how future games will ever be able to beat her. She’s a good villain, but she doesn’t make me want to root for her and it’s still satisfying as hell to beat her. Junko’s great. She’s probably the one who “improved” Hangman’s Gambit considering how unfair it is. I sure felt tons of despair whenever I played it. The ONE thing I didn’t think the creators took advantage of was her saying she could imitate the characters’ friends’ personalities. She could have just started talking as their friends just to mess with the characters. Chiaki when she’s talking to Hajime, Peko to Fuyuhiko, and so on. Maybe it would need more time or something so they weren’t able to do it, but I’d have really liked seeing that. She’s already emotionally tormenting them. Why not a little more? It would have been nice to see.

Akane was…the longer she was one of the survivors, the less I tolerated her. I might just be bitter because some of my favorites were killed off but she’s just not entertaining. I can’t even remember her name half of the time. Sigh, she could have so easily been Ibuki…

Kazuichi was likable. I’m sure if I did more free time events with him I’d have definitely enjoyed him more, but I liked him. Nothing too much stands out about him, but there really isn’t too much to dislike or even say about him for me. I think the most I remember about him is the bear trap teeth and “Are my words being displayed on a screen right now?!” Trial six got meta.

I liked Sonia too, more than Kazuichi. She was by far more entertaining than him, and actually did stuff. I got a kick out of her being a weeb. I’m glad she was a survivor.

Fuyuhiko didn’t die, and I’m happy. That means he can show up again and that’s good. Unless I’m forgetting something, he was the only survivor to have a character arc so it makes sense why I’d get attached to him. I’ve talked about him before so I won’t go too much into him.

Never did I think I would be so happy to see Makoto. Ever. He always seems to shine at the endgame, huh? Seeing Byakuya again makes me wonder why I missed him. Geez, he’s such a jerk. But it’s okay because Kyoko! Kyoko’s the best and seeing her again made me really happy. I’m sad there was no Toko but I’ll live. She was referenced in the epilogue so I’ll take it.

Nagito’s still nuts, except now that I know more about him, he’s somehow even more crazy. He hacked his arm off just so he could have Junko’s arm? What the hell? Like, wasn’t Junko crushed to death? How does that even work? Of course that’s not even scratching the surface of what other people did to her crushed-to-death corpse. I think I’ll just avoid talking about that, though…

And finally, HAJIME. OH, HAJIME. YOU’RE THE REASON I WAS LEFT STARING BLANKLY AT MY COMPUTER SCREEN WONDERING WHAT’S GOING ON.

When you said Hajime’s voice actor really shone late-game, holy crap, you really meant it. I am so glad that I decided to play the game with the English dub (other than not having to read the Nonstop Debate text flying around). I wouldn’t have been nearly as affected by hearing Hajime’s breakdown with just words on a screen. I’m not saying his Japanese VA is bad at all, but it’s more effective when you can understand what’s being said, y'know?

Just imagine finding out that you’re arguably on par with pretty much evil incarnate. His breakdown was just so bad, the final portion of the trial was dedicated to it, which was definitely a good choice. In fact, the climax of his character arc was given more focus than the climax of the game. And I liked it. Seeing him just completely shut down was…I don’t know how to describe it. It was unnerving, in a way, I think is one way to describe it. It makes you think that him and Nagito are probably more alike than he wants to admit. Or, at least, pre-game Hajime was a lot like Nagito. Both were willing to go to drastic ends to become “useful”, and that was what killed them in the end.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Izuru Kamukura was an invented person put in Hajime’s brain, right? He was never a person who died then his personality was reinvented then slapped on this random high school student? I kind of got that from Junko’s line of “Izuru Kamukura 1.0” but I want to be sure.

I really have no idea what else to say about him because there’s so much that can be said. I’m sure words will come to me in a few days when I’m able to properly digest everything. And, I don’t know, watching Danganronpa 3 over the weekend.

But I think the biggest tragedy out of all of this was Hajime losing all of his monocoins. I wasn’t even able to spend all the ones I had collected. It was over 500, I think. All the things I could have bought…

OH, AND AGAIN WITH THE EPIC FORESHADOWING!! In the first game it was a random PhotoShop mention, and in this game it was the characters talking about these plot twists about mystery novels where the detective or the protagonist turns out to be the Big Bad all along. The foreshadowing in both of these games is absolutely amazing and I love it. Hajime’s (or rather, Izuru?) not just the villain of his game, he’s one of the main villains in the entire series.

I have a few questions, though. How did he not revert back to Izuru when he helped shut down the game? How did all the other survivors not completely revert back to their Ultimate Despair selves? Why did his hair randomly change color? I get it was because if they did, the game wouldn’t exactly have too much closure, but I don’t really get it. I’ll probably go back and replay the sixth chapter again at some point, but I’d like to hear your explanation(s) for it first.

I don’t have much to say about the plot because I think I mostly said it all with Hajime, since he’s so closely tied to it.

So yeah, this game was amazing. Yeah, I liked the gameplay better in the first game, but everything else is just so fantastic, it doesn’t even matter because I loved everything else about it so much.

Man I never even thought of Junko pretending to be the deceased students. Makes me sad she actually didn’t. But yep, I was happy to see her return (only because I felt she worked well here too. I wouldn’t want her to become like Ganondorf and always be the final boss). She does an epic job of breaking our cast down one by one. And lol, yep, that’s a good explanation why Hangman’s Gambit it so much worse! She’s doing it to drink our tears.

Haha, I’m glad you like the survivors more than me. Agree with you about Akane, but Kazuichi’s Sonia-stalking became way too much and Sonia’s always just kind of been there for me. Hajime and Fuyuhiko were the only ones I liked.

Lmao Byakuya comes back and you go right back to hating him! But I’m glad you liked Makoto and Kyoko’s cameo!

Nagito just really loves and hates Junko. Junko was crushed, but I honestly believe that Nagito’s luck just preserved enough of her body for him to hack her arm off.

HAJIME IS A FANTASTIC CHARACTER AND A PRECIOUS BABY. NOW YOU TOO HAVE BEEN ENLIGHTENED.

JYB is so magnificent in Trial 6, it’s one of my favorite performances ever. The pure agony in his voice is heartbreaking. And it’s really what cemented Hajime as my favorite protagonist (that and the revelations of Trial 6 in general). Like, he wanted to be special so much he sacrificed his humanity for it, only to have a hand in destroying the world. That would shake up anyone!

Right, Izuru Kamukura, the one you see in Chapter 0, is an entirely new persona who was only ‘born’ when Hajime went through the surgeries. There was a predecessor, the founder of the school–that’s who Junko is referring to when she says “Izuru Kamukura 1.0″. He’s long dead and has nothing to do with Izuru Kamukura, result of the Hope Cultivation Project.

There was even more foreshadowing in DR0, the novel I suggested reading! It’s where Izuru first gets set up. Interestingly, some of what is revealed there contradicts some of what Junko claims about him here. Take that to mean what you will.

Who says he didn’t revert to Izuru? :) He’s got every talent, I’m sure Ultimate Actor is in there as well…

Okay, serious answer, the power of hope/friendship/belief in yourself is why he and the others are okay. They basically woke up with their memories of what happened in the simulation and their real memories, and they decided to do what Chiaki said and make their own future. Basically, sheer will is why they can fight back against despair. Cheesy, but they deserve it.

Why did his hair go from brown to black, or black to brown? …I really have no idea. He might have dyed it back to brown, but I don’t know why it changed color in the first place.

I have three things to say about watching Danganronpa 3 (looking forward to your thoughts on that too)! First, the episode order is Future 1 -> Despair 1 -> Future 2 -> Despair 2 etc. Don’t watch all of one side first, stuff that happens in the other arc will get spoiled that way. Side:Future covers Makoto and the DR1 cast after the events of SDR2, while Side:Despair shows how the world (and the SDR2 cast) fell to despair.

Second, contrary to playing the games in English, I’d suggest watching the subbed version first. This is because the dub, while not bad…is hilarious. It’s so hilarious it loses some of the serious emotion. It’s like an Abridged series (I’m not joking). It’s worth a watch, but second.

Third, there is an episode of Side:Future that references the events of the gaiden game Ultra Despair Girls, so it’s recommended to have some knowledge of what happens there. If you’re too impatient to play it, you can get away with watching the cutscenes on Youtube.

I’m glad you loved this game so much, and congrats on beating it! Sorry the gameplay never became your thing, but like you said everything else is just so, so good. It’s still my favorite to this day.
