Colin Firth's Wet Influence
I've said this before, but this bears repeating because holy shit y'all
(Intro here, data and graphs here)
When I first started noticing how often Colin Firth got wet I questioned, was it because of Pride and Prejudice? Did the decision to put him in a wet shirt in 1995 alter the course of his career?
Tumblr media
Well, NO. My hypothesis was wrong. He had five projects in the ten years before 1995, including Valmont which also put him in a wet white shirt. He already had an established career in wetness. Pride and Prejudice didn't influence him.
Instead,
Colin Firth influenced Pride & Prejudice
Tumblr media
Before 1995? ZERO wet Darcys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After 1995? MOST Darcys get wet! I watched 19 post 1995 adaptations with a Darcy character, and 13 of them got that Darcy wet. That's 68%! In at least two where they didn't get wet, they alluded to it!
I don't have stats either, but I've read >650 P&P adaptations and even in a non-visual medium, it's a trope to get Darcy wet.
Colin Firth’s trend of getting wet is so powerful it permanently altered the public perception of a 200 year old character
And! Now there are homages!
Tumblr media
So. You know. You'll never be able to unsee when a character gets wet now. You're welcome!

Hi, I'm the rotomblr multiverse cataloguer. I'm here to figure out how many universes are connected to rotomblr and who lives in which one. After this there will be a list of them and their inhabitants, once I start acquiring data.
I have tried, but I can't find any better way of showing the graph than just having the obsidian files automatically added to a repository on github. I'm sure I've seen at some point that there is a way of showing the graph there too, but I can't find it now that it's connected. If I do, I'll change it, but for now you have to download it and place it in an obsidian vault if you want to see the graph and be able to click the links to get directly to the note they say they go to. Ignore the plugins installed if you do that, just delete the folder, none of them are used in the graph.
((Also, I didn't say it before, but pelipper mail and magic anons are on, but I will ignore magic anons if they go against what I want to do with the character (I don't think it will happen often, but still).))
Here's what I look like:
Tumblr media
Log of the changes and whatnot under the cut:
//@whys-rotomblr-hub for anything related to this or any other of my characters.
Ok, apparently github doesn't allow people to see private repositories, I should have checked that yesterday instead of today, but gitfront should fix that by allowing people to see, even if it means having to manually update the view, because I think that's one of the things it can't do. It should all be working now.
Added README.md to the repository to explain it a bit better.
Added CONTRIBUTING.md and made the repository public. I don't know why I kept insisting that it had to be private, as I see no actual reason to not make it public. I will update the gitfront thing to reflect this so people that look at it there know. Now, it should always be updated (every ten minutes).
Added a lot of tags so it's easier to search for some specific type of user, like those that research the multiverse or those that can timetravel.
Organized the universes in two folders, so it's easier to look for those that have or don't have rotomblr.
Organized the accounts and characters folders with a folder for every universe.
Added links to the blogs in their corresponding nodes.
//Added tags for the mains of those running the blogs

Nope now it’s at the point that i’m shocked that people off tt don’t know what’s going down. I have no reach but i’ll sum it up anyway.
SCOTUS is hearing on the constitutionality of the ban as tiktok and creators are arguing that it is a violation of our first amendment rights to free speech, freedom of the press and freedom to assemble.
SCOTUS: tiktok bad, big security concern because china bad!
Tiktok lawyers: if china is such a concern why are you singling us out? Why not SHEIN or temu which collect far more information and are less transparent with their users?
SCOTUS (out loud): well you see we don’t like how users are communicating with each other, it’s making them more anti-american and china could disseminate pro china propaganda (get it? They literally said they do not like how we Speak or how we Assemble. Independent journalists reach their audience on tt meaning they have Press they want to suppress)
Tiktok users: this is fucking bullshit i don’t want to lose this community what should we do? We don’t want to go to meta or x because they both lobbied congress to ban tiktok (free market capitalism amirite? Paying off your local congressmen to suppress the competition is totally what the free market is about) but nothing else is like TikTok
A few users: what about xiaohongshu? It’s the Chinese version of tiktok (not quite, douyin is the chinese tiktok but it’s primarily for younger users so xiaohongshu was chosen)
16 hours later:
Tumblr media
Tiktok as a community has chosen to collectively migrate TO a chinese owned app that is purely in Chinese out of utter spite and contempt for meta/x and the gov that is backing them.
My fyp is a mix of “i would rather mail memes to my friends than ever return to instagram reels” and “i will xerox my data to xi jinping myself i do not care i share my ss# with 5 other people anyway” and “im just getting ready for my day with my chinese made coffee maker and my Chinese made blowdryer and my chinese made clothing and listening to a podcast on my chinese made phone and get in my car running on chinese manufactured microchips but logging into a chinese social media? Too much for our gov!” etc.
So the government was scared that tiktok was creating a sense of class consciousness and tried to kill it but by doing so they sent us all to xiaohongshu. And now? Oh it’s adorable seeing this gov-manufactured divide be crossed in such a way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is adorable and so not what they were expecting. Im sure they were expecting a reluctant return to reels and shorts to fill the void but tiktokers said fuck that, we will forge connections across the world. Who you tell me is my enemy i will make my friend. That’s pretty damn cool.

Colin Firth (Part 2 - THE DATA)
You can read my intro here.
When I ran the data, Colin Firth had 90 acting credits on IMDB (in 40 years! The man's been busy!)
I wanted to set some parameters, so I excluded anything where the overall project was under an hour of runtime.
Tumblr media
(DVD bonus content, short films, one off TV episodes. You'll notice Crown Court is over an hour, but as a one off TV episode, I excluded it as well. PS it was his first onscreen appearance, as a baby face cop)
I also excluded anything where he has <5 minutes of screentime.
Tumblr media
(The record might be the 1987 Secret Garden, where he's got about 90 seconds. Honestly forgot I was watching a Colin Firth film until he showed up right before the credits)
I also excluded this
Tumblr media
because dear god, no thank you I didn't want to watch that shit (I'm only partially kidding. I'd watched literally everything else so I watched this one too, it wasn't that bad)
This left us with a very respectable 76 films that I tracked data for!
SMOKING
The highest percentage of what I tracked was whether he smoked.
Tumblr media
(sidenote, check out that 10 year period where he had TWENTY FOUR PROJECTS)
I assume this is common for anyone who made films in the 80s or 90s, when smoking onscreen was more prevalent. Out of curiosity I broke it up by when the film was set, because he does a lot of period pieces, and found that yes! Things do taper off as the public perception of smoking changed.
Tumblr media
(I was very broad with what I considered a "period piece", mostly because I didn't start making this powerpoint until 10pm the night before I presented, because that's who I am as a person) The numbers didn't show for actual movies, but in the 2000s there were only 2 movies where he smoked, out of the 19 that he filmed. Probably because it shifted to instead of everyone or cool kids, only villains and bad guys smoke.
INFIDELITY
I also tracked infidelity, separating out whether his partner was unfaithful to him, or whether he was the one to be unfaithful or help a committed person be unfaithful.
Tumblr media
These percentages are of all his movies. He gets cheated on 15.8% of the time, poor guy.
GRIEF
Did you know that in a quarter of his projects, he explores grief?
Tumblr media
I determined that there were two main types of grief - the death of an intimate (mostly a partner, occasionally a family member), and wartime PTSD.
But that's not what you're here for. I know you. You wanna see how often he got
WET
Tumblr media
THIRTY PERCENT. That is almost every third project!
I separated it out where the water goes on him (rain, shower, fountain, fire hose) or where he goes in the water (ocean, pond, lake, bath). A Single Man is special, because there's a scene where he's in the rain, and a scene where he's in the ocean (and in the credits, he's floating nude underwater, just saying).
That seems like a lot! I don't have any comparison data (yet, waiting for my brain to embark on another unhinged project) but that seems like more than other people.
I have one more point to share with y'all

If you're feeling anxious or depressed about the climate and want to do something to help right now, from your bed, for free...
Start helping with citizen science projects
What's a citizen science project? Basically, it's crowdsourced science. In this case, crowdsourced climate science, that you can help with!
You don't need qualifications or any training besides the slideshow at the start of a project. There are a lot of things that humans can do way better than machines can, even with only minimal training, that are vital to science - especially digitizing records and building searchable databases
Like labeling trees in aerial photos so that scientists have better datasets to use for restoration.
Or counting cells in fossilized plants to track the impacts of climate change.
Or digitizing old atmospheric data to help scientists track the warming effects of El Niño.
Or counting penguins to help scientists better protect them.
Those are all on one of the most prominent citizen science platforms, called Zooniverse, but there are a ton of others, too.
Oh, and btw, you don't have to worry about messing up, because several people see each image. Studies show that if you pool the opinions of however many regular people (different by field), it matches the accuracy rate of a trained scientist in the field.
--
I spent a lot of time doing this when I was really badly injured and housebound, and it was so good for me to be able to HELP and DO SOMETHING, even when I was in too much pain to leave my bed. So if you are chronically ill/disabled/for whatever reason can't participate or volunteer for things in person, I highly highly recommend.
Next time you wish you could do something - anything - to help
Remember that actually, you can. And help with some science.
