Exploring New Jersey with Charter Bus Rentals: Your Ultimate Travel Solution
Tumblr media
New Jersey is a state brimming with diverse attractions, from the bustling cityscape of Newark to the serene shores of Cape May. Whether you’re planning a corporate event, a family reunion, or a fun group outing, charter bus rentals offer a comfortable and convenient way to travel around the Garden State. Here’s why opting for a charter bus rental in NJ can be the best decision for your next trip.
Why Choose a Charter Bus Rental?
1. Comfort and Convenience
Charter buses are designed with passenger comfort in mind. Spacious seating, air conditioning, and onboard amenities like Wi-Fi and power outlets ensure a pleasant journey, no matter how long the trip. For larger groups, charter buses provide ample room to stretch out, making your travel experience much more enjoyable compared to cramped cars or crowded public transportation.
2. Cost-Effective Group Travel
When you’re traveling with a group, coordinating logistics and splitting costs can be a hassle. Charter bus rentals offer a cost-effective solution by providing a single, all-inclusive price for transportation. This can be more economical than renting multiple vehicles or purchasing individual tickets for trains or planes, especially when factoring in parking fees and fuel costs.
3. Stress-Free Planning
One of the biggest advantages of charter bus rentals is the ease of planning. Professional bus companies handle the details, including route planning, traffic management, and schedule adherence. This means you can focus on enjoying your trip without worrying about navigation or logistical challenges. Additionally, experienced drivers ensure a safe and smooth journey, giving you peace of mind on the road.
4. Flexibility and Customization
Charter bus services offer flexibility in terms of itinerary and route. Whether you want to visit iconic landmarks like the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, explore the historic streets of Princeton, or enjoy a day at the beach in Asbury Park, your charter bus can be tailored to your specific plans. Customized travel routes and schedules allow you to make the most of your time and explore at your own pace.
Popular Destinations to Explore in NJ
1. The Jersey Shore
The New Jersey coastline offers beautiful beaches and vibrant boardwalks. A charter bus can take you to popular destinations like Atlantic City, with its casinos and entertainment, or the charming seaside towns of Cape May and Ocean City.
2. Historic Sites
For history enthusiasts, New Jersey is rich with historical landmarks. A charter bus can transport your group to sites such as the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in West Orange or the Revolutionary War battlefields in Morristown.
3. Urban Adventures
Newark and Jersey City provide urban experiences with great dining, shopping, and cultural attractions. A charter bus can make it easy for groups to explore these cities without the stress of city driving and parking.
4. Natural Wonders
Explore the natural beauty of New Jersey’s parks and reserves. From the hiking trails of the Delaware Water Gap to the scenic views of the Palisades Interstate Park, a charter bus can get you to these stunning locations comfortably and efficiently.
Booking Your Charter Bus Rental
When booking a charter bus rental in NJ, consider factors such as the size of your group, the amenities you need, and your itinerary. Reputable charter bus companies provide a range of options from standard coaches to luxury buses with additional features.
It’s also wise to book early, especially during peak travel seasons or for large groups, to ensure availability and secure the best rates. Don’t forget to ask about special offers or discounts that may apply to your trip.
In Conclusion
Charter bus rentals are an excellent choice for group travel in New Jersey. They offer comfort, convenience, and cost-effectiveness, making them an ideal solution for various occasions. Whether you’re planning a corporate event, a family outing, or a fun day trip, a charter bus can enhance your travel experience and help you make the most of your time exploring the Garden State

Ida’s aftermath (1440) The death toll from Hurricane Ida rose to at least 60 over the holiday weekend, with more than half of the victims coming from the Northeast. At least 27 people were confirmed dead in New Jersey, 17 in New York, and five in Pennsylvania, with a number of isolated deaths reported up the Mid-Atlantic. As of this morning, 13 victims have been identified in Louisiana and two in Mississippi. Assessing the storm’s weeklong path of destruction from the Gulf to Massachusetts, analysts estimated Ida caused as much as $95B in total damage and economic loss. More than half a million customers remained without power in Louisiana, mostly in New Orleans and surrounding parishes, as of this morning. Out in the Atlantic, Hurricane Larry is expected to strengthen into a Category 4 storm, but is not currently projected to make US landfall.
Powerful earthquake near Mexico’s Acapulco kills at least 1 (AP) A powerful earthquake struck near the Pacific resort city of Acapulco on Tuesday night, killing at least one person and causing buildings to rock and sway in Mexico City hundreds of kilometers away. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7 and was centered 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) northeast of Acapulco. The mayor of Acapulco, Adela Román, said in statement to the television news outlet Milenio that “there is no really serious situation” so far and no reports of casualties. “There are nervous breakdowns; people are worried because there have been aftershocks,” she said, adding that there are “many gas leaks in many places” as well as some landslides and fallen walls.
El Salvador first country to make Bitcoin legal currency (BBC) From today, businesses in El Salvador will be obliged where possible to accept the controversial blockchain-backed currency as payment as the country has just become the first to make Bitcoin a legal tender. Millions of people are expected to download the government’s new digital wallet app which gives away $30 (€25) in Bitcoin to every citizen.
Bolsonaro’s Supporters Rally (Foreign Policy) Thousands of Brazilians took to the streets across the country today, answering—and protesting—a call by President Jair Bolsonaro for a popular show of force as corruption investigations, lagging poll numbers, and the reemergence of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, have weakened his position ahead of the October 2022 presidential election. A September 1 poll shows Lula trouncing Bolsonaro by double digits in a one-on-one matchup. Those election polls pair with recent polls showing more than 50 percent of Brazilians say the Bolsonaro government is bad or terrible, although those that say his administration is good or excellent has held steady at roughly 25 percent.
Venice prepares to charge tourists (Reuters) From a control room inside the police headquarters in Venice, Big Brother is watching you. To combat tourist overcrowding, officials are tracking every person who sets foot in the lagoon city. Using 468 CCTV cameras, optical sensors and a mobile phone-tracing system, they can tell residents from visitors, Italians from foreigners, where people are coming from, where they are heading and how fast they are moving. Every 15 minutes, authorities get a snapshot of how crowded the city is—alongside how many gondolas are sliding on the Canal Grande, whether boats are speeding and if the waters rise to dangerous levels. City authorities are preparing to demand that tourists pre-book their visit on an app and charge day-trippers between 3 and 10 euros to enter, depending on the time of the year. Airport-like turnstiles are being tested to control the flow of people and, should the numbers become overwhelming, stop new visitors from getting in. Potential visitors are sceptical. “It brings the wrong tone in me when I hear that I have to pay entrance just to see the buildings in the streets of the city” said Marc Schieber, a German national in Venice for the current film festival. “I think it is probably a new way to generate money.”
Lukashenko continues crackdown on opposition (NYT) Belarusian opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova was found guilty Monday of conspiracy to overthrow the government in Minsk and sentenced to 11 years in prison after a closed trial. Kolesnikova is one of the key opposition figures jailed in Belarus after protests ignited in August last year over presidential elections rejected by opposition activists as rigged. President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994, launched a violent crackdown on the protests, jailing hundreds of the regime’s opponents.
Myanmar resistance movement calls for nationwide uprising (AP) The main underground group coordinating resistance to Myanmar’s military government called for a nationwide uprising on Tuesday. The National Unity Government views itself as a shadow government composed of elected legislators who were barred from taking their seats when the military seized power in February. The group’s acting president Duwa Lashi La called for revolt “in every village, town and city in the entire country at the same time” and declared what he called a “state of emergency.” The country has been wracked by unrest since the military ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, with a low-level insurrection in many urban areas. There has been more serious combat in rural areas, especially in border regions where ethnic minority militias have been engaging in serious clashes with the government’s troops.
Forget Tiger Moms. Now China's 'Chicken Blood' Parents Are Pushing Kids To Succeed (NPR) They schedule their children's days in 15-minute increments. They scour online forums and swap tips on the most exclusive tutors and best sports coaches. Some even buy second homes next to the best public schools. Forget Tiger moms. These are China's jiwa or "chicken" parents, who are known for their attentive—some say obsessive—parenting style. The term is used to describe aggressive helicopter parenting, and comes from an unproven Chinese medicine treatment dating back to the 1950s, in which someone is injected with fresh chicken blood to stimulate energy. Jiwa parenting culture, a relatively new phenomenon, is now in the crosshairs of Chinese authorities. At a time when the government wants to see families having more children and raising more future workers, it fears that hyper-competitive parenting pressures—combined with the meteoric growth of China's private education sector, now worth billions—are deepening inequality and discouraging couples from having larger families, a priority of the country's new three-child policy. As more parents complain about the burnout brought on by jiwa culture, there's concern that the financial and emotional toll is making many reluctant to have a second, much less a third, child.
Singapore trials patrol robots to deter bad social behaviour (Reuters) Singapore has started trialing robots to patrol public areas and deter poor social behaviour in its latest effort to further augment its strong portfolio of surveillance tools. Ranked one of the safest countries in the world, Singapore has put two autonomous robots on trial to detect bad behaviour such as flouting of COVID-19 safety measures, smoking in prohibited areas and the improper parking of bicycles, Singapore’s Home Team Science and Technology Agency said in a statement on Sunday. It said the two patrol robots, named Xavier, are equipped with cameras that can detect bad social behaviour and trigger real-time alerts to the command and control centre. The agency said that during the three-week trial, the robots would be used for surveillance and displaying messages to educate the public on proper behaviour. Singapore’s home affairs minister, K Shanmugam, said in August the city-state aimed to have more than 200,000 police cameras by 2030, more than double the current number of cameras deployed.
3-year-old boy found after 3 days’ lost in Australian woods (AP) A 3-year-old boy wearing a sweat shirt and diapers was found sitting in a creek and cupping water in his hands to drink on Monday, three days after he was lost in rugged Australian woodland. Hundreds of people had been searching for Anthony “AJ” Elfalak, who has autism and is non-verbal, since he went missing from his family’s remote rural property near the village of Putty, north of Sydney, late Friday morning. His father, Anthony Elfalak, said AJ had been bitten by ants, had diaper rash and suffered abrasions. “It’s a miracle,” the father told reporters after he and his wife, Kelly Elfalak, were reunited with their son.
US-built databases a potential tool of Taliban repression (AP) Over two decades, the United States and its allies spent hundreds of millions of dollars building databases for the Afghan people. The nobly stated goal: Promote law and order and government accountability and modernize a war-ravaged land. But in the Taliban’s lightning seizure of power, most of that digital apparatus—including biometrics for verifying identities—apparently fell into Taliban hands. Built with few data-protection safeguards, it risks becoming the high-tech jackboots of a surveillance state. As the Taliban get their governing feet, there are worries it will be used for social control and to punish perceived foes. “It is a terrible irony,” said Frank Pasquale, Brooklyn Law School scholar of surveillance technologies. “It’s a real object lesson in ‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions.’”
The other Afghan women (New Yorker) Anand Gopal traveled to rural Afghanistan to meet women living under Taliban rule, whose voices are not often heard in international media. “Unlike in relatively liberal Kabul, visiting women in these hinterlands is not easy” since they don’t typically speak to unrelated men, Gopal writes. Many of those he interviewed seemed to prefer Taliban rule to the US-led occupation. “To locals, life under the coalition forces and their Afghan allies was pure hazard; even drinking tea in a sunlit field, or driving to your sister’s wedding, was a potentially deadly gamble,” Gopal writes. “What the Taliban offered over their rivals was a simple bargain: Obey us, and we will not kill you.”
Israel searches for 6 Palestinians after rare prison break (AP) Israel launched a massive manhunt in the country’s north and the occupied West Bank early Monday after six Palestinian prisoners tunneled out of their cell and escaped from a high-security facility in the biggest prison break of its kind in decades. The escape marks an embarrassing security breach just ahead of the Jewish New Year, when Israelis flock to the north to enjoy beaches, campsites and the Sea of Galilee. The prisoners appear to have gone into hiding and there was no indication Israeli authorities view them as an immediate threat. Israel’s Army Radio said 400 prisoners are being moved as a protective measure against any additional escape attempts. The radio said the prisoners escaped through a tunnel from the Gilboa prison, just north of the West Bank, which is supposed to be one of Israel’s most secure facilities.
Zuma on parole (BBC) Former South African president Jacob Zuma has been granted medical parole for an unknown illness. Zuma has been in hospital for the past month, where he has undergone surgery and will reportedly remain there until he has been discharged. The 79-year-old is serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court at Estcourt Correctional Centre. Zuma turned himself in to the authorities in July after being sentenced for failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency. The unprecedented jailing resulted in violent protests and looting by his loyal body of supporters. He also faces a separate corruption trial, which is due to resume on 9 September. The Democratic Alliance party criticized the parole, saying it’s “entirely unlawful and makes a mockery” of prison regulations.

CANTLON: BRUINS BEAT PACK 6-3 WIN DIVISION TITLE
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings MARLBOROUGH, MA - Providence scored six goals over the second half of the hockey game and defeated the Hartford Wolf Pack 6-3, and captured their second consecutive Atlantic Division title Thursday afternoon The Wolf Pack closed out the abbreviated AHL 24 game regular season with a record of 16-9-1-0 for 29 points, and Providence concluded the year with a 15-6-2-2 record for 34 points. Just before the game the Wolf Pack lost two-thirds of their top line in Justin Richards and Tim Gettinger and top forward Jonny Brodzinski because of injuries and suspensions. So, head coach Kris Knoblauch had to creates several new line combinations for their all-important regular season finale. The Wolf had built a 2-0 lead nearly halfway through the second period before the Bruins rallied on Hartford. The Wolf Pack in the first period as defenseman Zach Giuttari took a pass from Anthony Greco launched a shot at the net that was blocked in front. Still, the puck went right to Patrick Khordorenko, who whistled a hard wrist shot from 30 feet out that sailed over Bruin’s goalie Dan Vladar blocker pad and into the back of the net at 13:49 for his fourth goal of the season. The Wolf Pack had solid chances in the first period Mason Geersten early in the period and Ty Ronning had three quality chances early, a powerplay bid midway through the period and late in the period that Dan Vladar denied each one. Ryan Dmowski (Old Lyme/Gunnery prep) is playing just his fifth game of the year, and first, since his birthday was denied with 2:55 left in the first. Adam Huska did his best in stopping all shots he faced, including Robert Lantosi twice, Urho Vaakanainen, and Jack Studnicka. In the second period, the Pack went up 2-0 as captain Vincent LoVerde too raced in from the right point, took Patrick Khordorenko’s backhand pass off Paul Thompson’s rebound, and caught Loverde perfectly in stride as he fired his first of the season into the net at 6:17 The Bruins rallied as first Pavel Shen at the right point sent a tape-to-tape pass to Ian MacKinnon, the Bruins heavyweight who zipped a hard wrister short side past Adam Huska at 12:36 for his first goal of the year. Providence struck 60 seconds later and tied the game at two. The Pack’s Zach Giuttari wraparound clearing attempt on the right-wing boards went past Auston Rueschhoff, and rookie Edwards Tralmaks stopped it at the left point sent a low, accurate shot toward the net Huska made the save. The puck was at Huska’s feet, and the Bruins Oscar Steen had inside position on and jammed home his s goal of the season. The momentum had shifted like the wind of a Texas-sized thunderstorm. The wind carried Providence the rest of the game. The Wolf Pack had a chance to take the lead late and deflate the Bruns balloon, but Ty Ronning hit the post with 2:44 to go on the right-wing from 10 feet out, falling backward. A goal there might have made a difference. The ensuing play back up ice the Bruins scored the dagger shorthanded goal. Tommy Cross (Simsbury/Westminster Prep) made perfect outlet to Samuel Asselin who dished a pass to Jack Studnicka who then maneuvered through center ice entered the Wolf Pack zone. Then fed Vaakanainen the puck and he fired a low wrister stick side past Huska at 18:02 for his first of the year and a 3-2 Bruins lead they never lost. In the third period, the Bruins scored three more and pulled away from the Wolf Pack. James Sanchez made an early clear of a puck in the blue paint area, but persistent Providence Edwards Tralmarks worked the puck off the apron of the back of the net to keep the play alive. The Bruins expanded the lead to a two-goal margin just 2:03 into the period as Tralmarks put a solid shot on net Huska made the first save Oskar Steen skating by tap the loose puck underneath Huska for his fifth goal at 2:03. Then Curtis Hall Yale Bulldog was the recipient of a pass by Pavel Shen, who had stripped the puck from rookie Will Cullye and Hall used Patrick Sieloff as screen and fired his first pro goal by Huska at 9:47 for a 5-2 lead and the Wolf Pack could start warming up the bus. Then Samuel Asselin completed the second half of the game Bruins power surge smacking in a rebound of a Jack Studnicka shot in front and for his eighth goal at 14:38. The Wolf Pack last goal of the season came off the stick of Quinnipiac grad Alex Whalen with his second of the season shorthanded at 18:48 as Paul Thompson forced a turnover and Whalen had an empty net to shoot at as Vladar was stuck behind his net. NOTES: --Due to injuries suffered last night in the Rangers brawl filled loss to Washington and the Rangers playing in Boston tonight 40 minutes from Marlborough Tim Gettinger, Justin Richards and Jonny Brodzinski were recalled by the Rangers. Sadly, no Wolf Pack player day/night doubleheader. -Tyce Thompson (Milford/Salisbury School), after a two-point game against Wilkes Barre/Scranton, is recalled by New Jersey. LINES: Newell-Sanchez-Ronning Thompson-Khordorenko-Greco Rueschhoff-O’Leary-Geersten Dmowski-Whalen-Cullye Raddysh-Taylor LoVerde-Skinner Giutarri-Sieloff Huska Wall THREE STARS Jack Studnicka Providence Dan Vladar Providence Samuel Asselin Providence HONORABLE MENTIONS Patrick Khordorenko Hartford Pavel Shen Providence Urho Vaakanainen Providence SCRATCHES: Francois Brassard was the lone scratch for the game Gabriel Fontaine (upper-body injury season-over) NOTES: -The Wolf Pack scoring race the recalled Morgan Barron, who scored his first NHL goal last night against Washington, finishes top with 21 points as the 8th best in AHL rookie scoring, tops among rookies in powerplay goals with six, which is second-most in the AHL, where he is tied with multiple players. Ex-Pack Vinni Lettieri of the San Diego Gulls second in game-winning goals in the AHL with five. Lias Andersson of the Ontario Reign is tops with three shorthanded goals. NOTES: -As expected, the AHL Board of Governors (BOG) in a conference Zoom call approved Vancouver’s relocation of its AHL team to Abbotsford, BC starting in the fall, and New Jersey relocates Binghamton to Utica and will play as the Utica Comets in October at the Adirondack Bank Center not as the Devils as expected. Utica announced a new 10-year agreement with New Jersey and planned to open their season on October 17th, marking the 34-year anniversary of the first time AHL hockey was played in Utica. According to Abby News, the Vancouver Canucks have entered into an agreement in principle on a five-year agreement to run the Abbotsford Centre. They will be paid a $750K-C to run the building, with the city be responsible for capital maintenance and repair costs. The first AHL Abbotsford team, the Heat affiliated with Calgary, had a supply fee deal and, after five years, was paid by the city $5.5. million to exit the deal halfway through. Expect Binghamton to play in either the ECHL, FPHL or go dormant in the fall. -The league did not deal with the potential of the name and logo change in Bridgeport to become the Bridgeport Islanders. They may drop the Sound Tigers name and logo as their original 20-year lease and marketing setup expires; that was done by the late owner Roy Boe. Boe purchased the dormant Beast of New Haven franchise 30 days after it was mothballed, paying the Carolina Hurricanes the 2 million dollar franchise fee they required. He also signed a 20- year 20 million dollar lease in which he reneged on. Then was forced to turn the franchise over to the late Islanders owner Charles Wang instead of the non-compliance with non-payment of his required affiliation fee and numerous commercial debts with local vendors and sponsors plus employees that had accumulated in the first three years of ownership. The franchise values are now between $10-$12 million dollars. No news on a new lease arrangement at the Webster Bank Arena now run by OVG, but the team will likely stay there and a new deal will more than likely be announced sometime later this summer. -UCONN men's hockey head coach Mike Cavanaugh announced the team captains for the 2021-22 season. Seniors Carter Turnbull (Nanaimo, British Columbia) and Jachym Kondelik (Budejovice, Czech Republic) have been elected the team's captains for the upcoming season. At the same time, classmates Marc Gatcomb (Woburn, Mass.) and junior Roman Kinal (Waterford, Mich.) will be alternate captains. “I am so honored to have been chosen as Captain this year by my teammates. I believe this is the best group of talented guys we have had yet, and I am excited for the opportunity to lead this team to a championship this year,” said Turnbull in a press release. This will be the second consecutive season the Turnbull will wear a letter on his jersey for the Huskies.  The senior served as an alternate captain in 2020-21.  Turnbull played in all 23 games last season and was second on the team with nine goals.  He finished the season with 13 points (9g/4a) and generated a team-best 95 shots.  During his three seasons in Storrs, he appeared in 86 games with 23 goals and 21 assists on the ledger. Jachym Kondelik expressed his gratitude for the announcement. “I think being named a captain is a huge responsibility and an honor, especially because it is something that is being chosen by my teammates and coaches.  I think we have a great group and that everyone on this team will be a leader in certain ways.” Kondelik, the big 6-5 forward, is UConn’s top-returning career scoring leader, having piled up 71 points in 91 career games as a Husky.  He has scored 16 career goals with 55 assists and is a +7 over his three seasons.  This past year Kondelik was second on the team in scoring with 22 points coming on four goals and a team-best 18 assists in 23 games, and after the season, he was named to a Hockey East Third Team All-Star. Marc Gatcomb, a versatile big forward, will be a big part of the leadership quartet for a full college hockey season next season. “I am honored my coaches and teammates have given me the opportunity to represent the University of Connecticut at this high standard. I’m grateful to be alongside three great leaders and excited to get things started this fall.” Gatcomb, like Turnbull, took the ice for all 23 games this past season, finishing the year fifth on the team in scoring with 12 points, posting six goals and six assists.  Over his three seasons, Gatcomb has played 88 games and has 25 points on 14 goals and 11 assists. Roman Kinal, who has battled through injuries twice in his collegiate career at UCONN, seems a perfect fit to have a letter on the left side of his jersey. “It’s a huge honor to be chosen as one of the captains by the coaching staff and my teammates. With a team full of leaders, we have something extremely special here at UConn. I’m looking forward to getting back on campus to compete for a national championship.” After being forced to miss all of the 2019-20 season due to an injury, Kinal made his return to the Huskies defensive unit this year and finished with six points (1g/5a) in 16 games and was a +6 for the season.  His lone goal on the season provided the game-winner in a 2-1 win on the road at New Hampshire.  He has played in 50 games in two seasons with 13 career points (2g/11a) and 49 blocked shots. -In other state college hockey news, long-time Quinnipiac assistant coach for the last 13 years Bill Riga was named the new head coach of the Holy Cross Crusaders (AHA). Former head coach David Berard stepped down in April and was named the associate athletic director for men’s and women’s hockey at Providence College (HE) on Monday. Berard, a Rhode Island native, is a PC alum academically and athletically was a UCONN assistant in 2012-13 during their AHA years under the late. A year before, Mike Cavanaugh was hired. ‘No intercourse, no violence, just a chortle’: mixed emotions in Cornish village as Doc Martin ends – The Guardian
Featured Post in Water Filter India dot com - Water Filter India
The solar shone and the Atlantic glistened as a whole lot, maybe 1000’s, of Doc Martin pilgrims wound their approach down the steep lanes to the Cornish harbourside.
They sought out the spots in the fishing village of Port Isaac that characteristic in the lengthy-operating British ITV comedy drama sequence and took selfies exterior the homes and outlets they knew so properly from the present.
The fortunate ones – it was extraordinarily busy – managed to get a desk in the waterside pub the Golden Lion, reworked into the Crab and Lobster for the drama.
This autumn there’s additionally a contact of melancholy, a sense of the tip of one thing in Port Isaac, which has been the setting for the present – and arguably its greatest star – for the perfect a part of 20 years.
The makers have introduced that the programme, which first aired in 2004, is coming to an finish. Cast and crew will arrive in Cornwall in the spring, as lengthy as the Covid disaster permits, however then no extra. “I just think we’ve sort of done everything,” stated Martin Clunes, who performs the cantankerous GP.

“It is sad,” stated Dorothy Tong, from Fife in Scotland, who was taking in Port Isaac as a part of a September tour of Cornwall. Land’s End was disappointing. “A bit tacky. But Port Isaac has lived up to expectations. I’ve seen all the Doc Martin episodes. I’ll miss it when it’s gone.”
Gary and Helen Court, from north Wales, have been equally enchanted by Port Isaac. They drove all the way down to Cornwall by way of one other spot used as a set for an additional tv favorite: Highclere Castle in Hampshire, higher recognized to followers of historic drama as Downton Abbey. “We like a bit of escapism,” stated Helen.
Port Isaac resident Dave Morgan, a retired police detective, was to be discovered main a guided Doc Martin tour. He has appeared as an additional in eight of the 9 sequence filmed to this point.

Morgan is proud to have beenpart of it from the beginning, enjoying one of many panel that interviewed the Clunes character for the job of GP in the fictional village of Portwenn.
He additionally as soon as had a line and recites it proudly: “Wadebridge? I haven’t got a car”, throughout an episode when the village surgical procedure was below risk (Wadebridge is a city eight miles from Port Isaac).
“I think the show works because there’s no sex, no violence. It’s just a laugh,” he stated.
Morgan’s tour was very detailed. He identified the fudge and ice cream store that doubles as a pharmacist, a home that featured in an episode in which a villager had a seal in the tub (“I don’t know what the fuss was, we all have a seal in the bath”), even the general public bathrooms the place Doc Martin carried out an examination of a affected person with “trouble down below”.
Tumblr media

Of course, the village existed earlier than Doc Martin. Morgan additionally highlighted a spot the place John Wesley preached and the road the place fishermen used to boil bark to make a preservative for his or her nets.
Nor does he shrink back from a difficult situation. The recognition of Cornish seaside villages like Port Isaac has led to an inflow of second residence house owners.
Morgan stated he was the one everlasting resident left in his avenue. Doc Martin’s home, which could possibly be a beautiful household residence, is a vacation let. Most locals have moved out of the center of the village and dwell in much less picturesque homes on the hill above.
There may be little doubt that Doc Martin has introduced cash to Port Isaac. Coach excursions for American vacationers pause in Bath, Plymouth – and Port Isaac. One store, May Contain Nuts, has cabinets full of Doc Martin souvenirs – key-rings, mugs, fridge magnets. A farmer’s area turns into an overspill automotive park.
Tumblr media

Roy Speakman, a 73-year-outdated carpenter, was working on the village corridor. He is employed on the present as “standby chippy” when filming takes place. “There are some militants who think it’s a bad thing for the village but it brings in money and jobs.”
Some of the worldwide income of the present are donated to native causes, such as a stairlift to assist folks with disabilities get into the corridor. “They do a lot of good.”
But there are critics of the circus Doc Martin has created.
John Collins, who runs a fish service provider’s in an outdated pilchard-curing cellar, stated it had achieved little for his enterprise. “The visitors have a cup of tea and a scone. They don’t come and buy fish from me,” he stated. “The crew and cast are good as gold but they block the streets up. It’s hard to get deliveries out when they’re here.”
He doesn’t consider the present’s finish is close to. “They’ve been saying that for years,” he stated, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Fuerteventura. Sun, sea & sand. Pt 2.
Written by Rosie
If staying in one place isn’t for you there are plenty of car hire places around Caleta, but it’s worth noting that some can come with hidden fees. Asking a receptionist at a hotel, for example, can be handy as they have local knowledge of the better (and cheaper) companies to hire from. One car hire for a full 24 hours cost me a mere £30 and I was asked to return the Vauxhall Corsa with the same amount of fuel that I had received it with. But I was told I could go anywhere on the island except for Cofete. More on this later...
Puerto Del Rosario is north of the airport and an easy drive to reach. As Fuertaventura’s capital it can be very busy and not many tourists can be seen in the centre compared to other towns. A number of chain shops, food outlets and unique to the island places can be a great location to pick up some more interesting souvenirs and the bonus is that parking around the island is completely free, so there is no rush to hurry your shopping!
Hiring a different car we decide to upgrade to a 4x4 (with some unfortunate hidden fees as we had booked online). Happily, we were given not the SUV that was advertised, but a Mitsubishi Outlander which had a little more off-road capability. Deciding one day to take a tour of the island, we started off by heading south.
Taking a detour from Casillas De Morales to Tiscamanita I tired some off-roading which was actually more of a real road as most of the tarmac roads are relatively new due to the tourist trade. It’s worth remembering that some hire companies don’t cover driving off tarmac roads, so its always worth asking before you go. The local roads tend to be little more than a trail in the dust and we followed one rocky road that would lead us past some inactive volcanoes. It was at this point I found that my travelling companions didn’t like being away from the tarmac which caused some upset. Whoops! But the views were worth it.
Tumblr media
It needs to be noted that such roads can be very rough to drive over, and unless you are a driver that has done such driving in the past, has lots of experience and is a confident diver, these roads are not recommended as getting stuck in a hire car can probably land you with a big fine from the rental company!
Finally crawling our way up the last slope we reached tarmac (which left my travel companions relived) and we head through Tuinje, past Tarajelejo and the Oasis Wildlife Zoo at La Lajita and through Costa Calma. Costa Calma is another popular tourist town, but the drive from the airport directly down the highway can be quite long and the locals can be quite speedy trying to avoid the tourists which can lead to some hairy moments! A transfer coach or taxi is definitely recommended if you don’t want to drive on holiday.
Sadly we didn’t stop at Jandia on our journey around the island as I had been told that Jandia has some of the best natural beaches around the island and that Playa de Sotavento de Jandia is very popular.
Driving past a few more towns we finally hit Morro Jable and parked up, stretching our legs and taking a little walk around. Talking only a brief walk to the beach at Punta del Matorral O de Morro Jable we found a few windsurfers but as the wind was good for them, it kicked sand up from the beach so it wasn’t long before we returned to the car. Carefully following both the road and the sat-nav, we finally found the sign we had been looking for just off the FV-2 highway. Cofete. This car hire company had said nothing about the mysterious place, so we thought we’d give it a shot.
Oh my. The tarmac road quickly gave way to more loose rocks, the kind you find lining railways. The car slid on corners and some locals, or those braver than I, overtook us and tootled along at a happy 25+ mph. If I recall, we stuck at about 15mph to be on the safe side and occasionally slowed to 5mph on some of the sharper turns. The views of the sea on our left were almost unreal. A deep blue sparkled as far as the eye could see and the air con in the car was most welcomed as the sun blazed down on our car. Reaching a junction there were two options, continue west to pass Puerto de la Cruz and reach the tip of the island where sits nothing but a lighthouse and unspoilt views, or turn north toward Cofete. We went north. A steady ride and a snake of a road twisted up the mounts with few barriers continued until we reached the mountain pass at Punto de Vista sobre Puerto de Montaña and I decided to take a quick selfie. I wasn’t expecting the monstrous winds that whipped fiercely through the pass though! I could barely stand at the little car park and my friends laughed as they sat comfortably in the car. The views over the North Atlantic from the towering mountains may have been impressive but they were just as nice to experience through the car window.
If I thought the drive to that point was awkward, I was in for a shock. With the mountains on one side and steep cliffs to the other, I hugged to the mountain wall on my right and dared not to glance at the severe drop just feet away from the car. Oncoming traffic in the distance was easily seen snaking its way around the road and several times we stopped and waited for them to pass us. I dread to think of trying to squeeze past one another on a more narrow stretch or worse having to reverse to a safer spot. Finally levelling out we arrived in Cofete. A shanty town filled with locals relying on their own little community rather than driving into the town and cities constantly.
There is one small cafe in the village that takes cash only and I presume they have toilets but I cannot be certain as we didn’t visit the cafe. Instead, we had packed a small picnic to take with us as we were unsure about finding somewhere to eat, and luckily we have strong bladders!
Parking up by the beach we grabbed our belongings and headed for the water but one small curiosity caught my eye. A cemetery on the beach! (Pictured below) Cementerio del Cofete is mostly hidden under small sand dunes but its a small, quiet place nonetheless.
Tumblr media
If you are not driving, there is also a fairly frequent bus that runs from Morro Jable to Cofete and stops at the car park near the cemetery. There was also a regular 4x4 convoy of white Land Rovers that accessed the village and I believe they are part of a tourist day trip. So it’s worth keeping an eye out for that!
The beach itself spans for miles and slips away from the mountains into the North Atlantic. It's certainly not a spot for swimmers as the waves unbuffered can be quite large and strong. Paddling in the shallows as the water laps the beach is welcomed enough and the beach is a perfect place for sunbathing provided you have good sunscreen applied. Being such a difficult place to arrive at, we found the beach had barely anybody on it and we sat alone for hours enjoying the sun and sea. With the beach facing out to the west, I can only imagine watching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean, but the thought of driving back to Morro Jable along the Cofete road at night is not for the faint-hearted.
Tumblr media
A little history lesson: Villa Winter (pictured in the distance in the photo below) sits on the mountain slopes above Cofete and was built by a German engineer during WW2 and some of the 'roads’ around Cofete were laid then too. Some conspiracy theories state that with Fuertaventura being so close to both the African coast and Spain, it made a prime spot for Nazi boats and that the engineer responsible for the building was a sympathiser. It is easy enough to walk or drive to the villa, but as we were unsure if it was a residence we decided to politely keep our distance.
Tumblr media
Returning back from the beach we had unfortunately found the mid-day sun to have baked the sand and we ended up doing some peculiar towel-hopping and running across the beach as we had left our shoes in the car! The drive back along the mountain road was no different and with the sharp drop now on ‘my side’ of the road, I had opted again to wait at a few passing places and have the more experienced bus drivers and excursion groups pass me than trying to slip past one another in tighter spots. Finally reaching beautiful smooth tarmac one more, we took the scenic route back to our apartment turning north at Costa Calma through La Pared and along the FV-605.
Here I would also like to mention a very worthy place to visit via car. Among the mountains on the FV-605 road itself as it meets the FV-618 you will find at a small lay-by. Parking here you can hike the steady climb up the mountain top to Mirador Astronónomico, a natural observatory! In the day it offers wonderful views over the sun-baked mountains and at night you can read star maps etched into the stone-work and on information boards. It’s an easy enough place to reach on foot but trainers or other footwear (not flip-flops and sandals) are recommended. Eagerly studying the weather I found a night where no clouds were in the sky and one friend and I (the other opted to stay behind) drove at midnight to the observatory. Sadly the weather is a fickle thing and we saw nothing aside from clouds sailing through the darkness. Next visit to the island we will try again!
Continuing on past Pájara, Tuineje again and on the highway this time to Tiscamanita we stopped eventually at Antigua and took a walk around. Wanting to see a typical Spanish church we tired the doors of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora but found them locked and realised that it was siesta time. Grabbing a quick Spanish style lunch at one of the few open bars (sadly I can’t recall which) we then headed back down the FV-413 to Caleta De Fuste. An avid traveller could drive the entire island in a day, but to take in all the sights would be a very hasty stop at each location.
Another day we deiced to take the road north to Corralejo which we found more of a cooler climate than the south of the island. Coming up the FV-1A highway we passed through Paque Natural de Corralejo, the natural sand dunes. While being an extremely scenic spot and convenient to pull over at the roadside for some snaps, it seemed all the other tourists had the same idea and hordes of people stood around taking group photos, selfies and photos of the sand dunes themselves. We didn’t stop.
Most of the Corralejo is centred around the docks and there are lots of places to eat and shop. My favourite being Cebra Culture located at The Bell Tower, Local 44, 35660, which is filled with some beautiful bohemian pieces of clothing and accessories. They also have a shop in Puerto del Rosario. Walking the streets and taking in the local culture we hopped back in the car and drove past a spectacular sight: Volcano Bayuyo. We put it to a vote if we should take the half-hour to one hour climb to the top but we decided that we were too exhausted from that days antics and we would try it another time.
All in all, Fuerteventura is a wonderful island, with plenty of beaches and things to do all year round, fantastic scenery and it features lots of great nightlife and a friendly atmosphere as well.
------
Pros: The island is an UNESCO nature reserve, constant pleasant winds that cool the air, lots of beaches, great scenery, plenty to do.
Cons: Can get very quickly sunburnt without realising, can get very busy with tourists, not a lot of easily sign-posted public transport, hardly any English speakers outside the main tourist areas.

Arplis - News: Great seat, so-so service: A review of KLMs business class on the 787-9 from Amsterdam to Toronto
TPG Rating
80 100
Pros
Beautiful, comfortable seat and bed; ample options for inflight entertainment; greatly improved lounge at Amsterdam airport.
Cons
Slow, disjointed meal service.
16/20 Ground Experience
26/30 Cabin + Seat
12/15 Amenities + IFE
15/20 Food + Beverage
11/15 Service
Dutch flag carrier KLM is a major presence in the U.S. and Canada, with year-round flights to Amsterdam (AMS) from 14 cities. It sends across the Atlantic pretty much all of the airplane types in its long-haul fleet: the Airbus A330 and Boeing 747, 777 and 787. The last one is the only one offering business class with direct aisle access for all seats, while the other types feature configurations with seats in a 2-2-2 layout.
Its a much different story on the 787s, which began joining the fleet four years ago and sport a 1-2-1 configuration in business class, with seats laid out in a reverse-herringbone pattern. On paper, its a totally competitive offering across the Atlantic, at least in terms of seat.
KLM is also a member of SkyTeam, the alliance that includes Delta Air Lines, so flyers can earn and redeem Deltas SkyMiles on all flights, as well as Air France and KLMs own Flying Blue miles.
For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.
Weve reviewed KLMs business class before several times, including the classic upper-deck experience on the 747. Every time, we found it to be a good, but not great, way to fly at the front of the plane.
What would we find in 2019, which also happens to be the 100-year anniversary of KLM, the worlds oldest airline?
Booking
The Flying Blue program has become complicated lately, but youll be able to navigate it easily using our guides. You can also get Flying Blue miles by transferring points from Citi ThankYou Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy.
When we found a great award fare from Amsterdam to Toronto (YYZ) for 45,375 Flying Blue miles plus $226.15 in taxes and fees, we went for it without hesitation. We value Flying Blue miles at 1.2 cents each, making this a transatlantic flight in business class for $750.65. You can pay a lot more in coach!
On the KLM app, I was able to select my seat in advance not my meals, unfortunately and I was off for one of the cheapest premium-class Atlantic crossings of my entire frequent-flyer career.

Amsterdams Schiphol Airport is one of the easiest airports in Europe to navigate. Connections are a breeze compared to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) or London Heathrow (LHR), getting there from the city is easy with plenty of trains and the airport itself is well designed.
When I arrived at the departures hall at 2:40 p.m. for the 5:35 p.m. departure to Toronto, I found the check-in area and departure gate already displayed on the monitors.
Biz-class passengers and elite members of the SkyTeam alliance could check in using a separate gated area, indicated by the SkyPriority logo.
Tumblr media
Within this area were both traditional, staffed desks and self-service kiosks, useful if you dont have baggage to check. KLMs institutional blue color, with accents of Dutch orange, appeared in tasteful touches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite having already checked in on the app, I got a paper boarding pass from a desk employee you never know when you might need it. Then I used the priority access to security and the departure gates, clearly indicated within the gated area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a quick and painless security and passport check, I was out in the departures area, headed to a duty-free shop for the delicacies I always make sure to bring home from the Amsterdam airport stroopwafels, salty licorice, Gouda cheese and then to one of the KLM lounges.
Tumblr media
Even without lounge access, I would have had plenty to see and quiet areas to sit in. Schiphol is a nice airport to be in if you dont have lounge access. Its also a quiet airport, with no announcements on loudspeakers.
Tumblr media
TPG contributor Eric Rosen has reviewed in depth the renovated KLM Crown Lounge, one of the two at AMS (the other one is within the area restricted to flights within the European Unions passport-free zone.) Eric explains in detail what you can find there, but I can sum up my time in it with one word: Wow!
This was a far cry from the cavernous, rather boring space it used to be. It had been completely transformed into a large, world-class lounge.
Tumblr media
Immediately upon entering, I could see things had changed from my previous visits.
Tumblr media
As befits the name, it now had lounge chairs. And much, much better food options, including an la carte restaurant on the second floor, called Blue. (Too bad it was not free, unlike the food and drink in the lounge.)
Tumblr media
I spent a delightful hour exploring, and liking, the buffet food and the decor. Another reason to pick a transfer at AMS over other European gateways.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Monitors in the lounge included a mention of how long it took to walk to a specific gate. Armed with that knowledge, I could maximize my time in the lounge and timed my arrival at the gate just four minutes before the start of boarding, long enough to admire the beautiful blue 787-9 that was to fly as KL695 to Toronto.
KLM names its 787s after flowers, and this one, a year-old Dreamliner, was called Tulip. How much more Dutch can you get?
Tumblr media
Priority and general boarding lanes were clearly marked, and nobody was crowding the boarding area. At 4:50 p.m., boarding began right on time.

KLMs 787-9 has 30 business-class seats, in a single cabin. The longer 787-10 has 38.
It was, even at first sight, a huge improvement over the 2-2-2 biz classes of previous KLM birds. The reverse-herringbone layout and that particular seat type have been around for years, but in KLMs incarnation, they exuded quiet elegance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, as is usual on this aircraft: No window shades! 787 windows are dimmed electronically, with the touch switch under them.
Tumblr media
The inflight-entertainment screen swiveled out with a press of the blue button to the left.
Tumblr media
Headrests were adjustable in height and angle, and had adjustable wings. The seatbelts had airbags, as happens more and more in premium seats.
In the lie-flat position, the 22-inch wide seat turned into an 81-inch bed. Though a mattress pad for sleeping was not available, the bed offered enough space in the footwell to move comfortably. The only thing I didnt like about it in bed mode was the clunky airbag belt, and the pillow could have been firmer, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When sleeping under a blanket or comforter, fasten your seat belt over it. That way, if theres turbulence and flight attendants come to check if youre buckled in, they can just take a look and not bother you and youll make their job easier, too.
Tumblr media
The armrest on the aisle side could be lowered with the blue button. Flight attendants asked passengers to keep them in the lowered position for takeoff and landing.
Tumblr media
It would not have been possible to store large electronics like laptops or tablets anywhere other than the overhead bins, but the closed storage cubby next to the IFE remote was ideal for wallets, phones and other small items. Headphones for the IFE were hanging in it from a hook.
Tumblr media
I especially liked the clever mirror inside the door, in classy KLM blue.
Tumblr media
An international power outlet and powered USB outlet were under the armrest by the window, with a sign indicating their location.
Tumblr media
The tray table extended from the same armrest with the press of another blue button. It was a bit small, but still OK for a 15-inch laptop, and once extended it could slide forward, letting the seat occupant get up during meal service. This is a key element that not all airlines get right; for example, Virgins swanky new Upper Class forces you to stay seated when the table is out and a meal is on it.
Tumblr media
The seat controls were intuitive, and I didnt see any other passenger have to ask a flight attendant for help figuring things out. From the top, the four buttons are: slide seat forward and back, bed mode, seat back up and overhead light.
Tumblr media
Besides the overhead light, which could be controlled from the remote too, there was a reading light built into the seat. Two adjustable air-conditioning vents were above the seat, the latter a feature not found on all aircraft. (Some European airlines, like Lufthansa, are notorious for keeping cabins far warmer than what Americans are used to.)
Tumblr media
The bathrooms were more or less normal, save for a KLM classic, the Delft-house decorations. Theyre found all over its branded materials, and even on the escalator to the Crown Lounge.

As customary, I found pillow and comforter already on the seat, and headphones in the mini storage locker. Amenity kits were distributed later.

The amenity kit by Dutch designer Jan Taminiau, featuring the colors of the Dutch flag, was distributed to each passenger just after flight attendants closed the overhead bins prior to pushing back from the gate. It had the basics for a long-haul flight: socks, toothpaste and toothbrush, eye mask and earplugs, moisturizer, lip balm and a pen useful for immigration forms.

More toiletries were found in the two bathrooms exclusive to business class, which were spotless throughout the seven-hour, 40-minute flight. Hair gel, body mist and hand-and-body lotion were a limited edition by Rituals for KLM. Besides the pillow and comforter, I didnt receive any other amenities like slippers or pajamas.
These KLM aircraft feature crisp, 16-inch screens, with about 250 movies to watch in at least 14 languages, and a gorgeous moving map: this was a good IFE, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
The Wi-Fi internet disconnected a few times, but was otherwise quite usable. I paid 18 euros ($20) for the whole flight, a much better deal than the other choice of 8 euros ($9) for one hour. (If you just wanted to send or receive text messages, that was free.) The Speedtest app kept timing out, but the internet was fast enough for videos, albeit with some buffering.
Tumblr media
The headphones supplied by the airline were of the fairly rare three-prong kind, with OK not outstanding sound quality.
Tumblr media
The beautiful 3D moving map could also be loaded on the smaller display in the remote, which retained full pinch-and-zoom functionality.
Tumblr media
The cockpit-view function is increasingly popular in IFEs, and for aviation geeks its a delight every time. After our takeoff on schedule at 5:45 p.m., I followed on the screen our climb from sea level straight to our initial cruising altitude of 36,000 feet in 25 minutes which happened in near silence, despite my position just in front of the righthand engine.
Tumblr media
The flight unfolded entirely in darkness. In late June, say, the views out of the window would have been spectacular, one long sunset seen from the edge of the stratosphere, but in early November we flew at night from start to end.

Dine on Demand
Are you even flying on a Dutch airline if youre not offered a Heineken? Of course not, and a can of the national beer of the Netherlands was on the tray that a flight attendant brought down the aisle as boarding finished. There were also Champagne, orange juice and water. (Incidentally, the two stripes on the flight attendants sleeve identified her as a senior cabin attendant in the KLM rank insignia system.)
Tumblr media
At my seat, I found a menu and wine list, with the KLM logo inside a Delft-porcelain motif. The airlines Champagne may have been a midrange Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rserve, but its taste in graphics was impeccable.
Tumblr media
On the wine list, I noticed a cocktail described as a special lighter, crisper version of a Negroni, with Dutch genever (a typically Dutch kind of gin), chosen because both KLM and the Negroni were born in 1919. When the drinks cart arrived at my seat, half an hour after takeoff, I asked for it, with a small bowl of nuts and sparkling water.
The nuts should have been warm and the drink in a wider glass, but those are minor quibbles to have at 36,000 feet, and the Negroni-ish was indeed lighter and crisper than the original, a true pleasure.
Tumblr media
For dinner, I could choose among two appetizers, three entrees and two desserts. For the appetizer, I had tomato soup over the other choice, salmon and spicy mango with hazelnut-cucumber-pepper-and-mango dressing.
All three main courses featured potatoes, in an apparent nod to a classic Dutch staple food. My choice was panfried cod and Dutch prawns with herb potatoes, roasted sweet potatoes and broad beans in a mussel gravy. The other two entrees were miso-marinated chicken thigh with carrots, potato puree, Brussels sprouts in an orange beurre blanc sauce; and beef stew with red cabbage, potatoes and cornichons.
For dessert I could have a cheese plate blue cream cheese, Klaver Roem and Leerdammer Caractre, all Dutch cheeses, served with crackers and grapes or sweet bites: brownie with ganache, a chocolate-caramel tartlet and a lemon cheesecake with raspberries. I went with the cheese, and a glass of New Zealand riesling from a simple, five-wine list. It also featured a Chilean chardonnay and three reds: a grenache from France, an Argentinian malbec and a South African shiraz.
Things sounded promising on paper. But when dinner service began, they went awry.
The galley ran out of the salmon appetizer for everybody who wanted it, and flight attendants proposed alternatives to at least two passengers. This happens, I said to myself, no biggie. Space on board is limited, and not everybody gets their first choice on every flight. In any case, I had the tomato soup, which was very good, and though the salad was a bit wilted, it came with a zingy beetroot dressing that was as cheeky as the salt and pepper shakers in the shape of Dutch clogs.
Tumblr media
But then I waited 30 minutes between the appetizer and entree, and the flight attendant assigned to my aisle got confused and thought I had ordered the chicken, not the cod.
They hadnt loaded enough cod anyway, he said, seeming a little confused about what was going on in his galley, but after some inquiry he turned up one stray cod entree for me. And good thing he did, because it went beautifully with the riesling.
Tumblr media
The silverware had pretty inlaid handles, and the carts were ornamented with the same motif as the menus.
Tumblr media
With dessert, the flight attendant brought around a box of chocolates in the shape of, you guessed it, Delft houses. I had two, and I could have had more. They were excellent, and so were the cheeses. By the time I was done with all of it, though, it had been a 90-minute dinner, and when your flight is under eight hours and at night, you may want a service flow that maximizes sleep instead of time spent eating.
Tumblr media
A half hour later it was lights out in the cabin, when we were already nearing the southern tip of Greenland, four and a half hours out from Toronto.
Ninety minutes before landing, after some sleep, it was time for the second meal service. The appetizer was a sweet-potato salad with white cheese and pomegranates, followed by either a cheese quiche or an Angus beef burger with cheese, and then by an apple pie. The meal was served with pepper jelly and deep-fried onions on the side. I got the burger and a Coke, which proved to be a good choice. And the apple pie that followed was perfectly warm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
KLM did not let me go hungry. It wasnt top-quality, but it was perfectly competent airplane food, in abundant amounts.

Turndown Service
Would you like a house, Mr. Riva? the flight attendant asked me after the last dish had been removed from my tray. On any other airline, I would have thought that a weird question, but in KLM business class it could mean only one thing. It was time for the distribution of the miniature Delft porcelain houses filled with liquor, which the airline gives away as souvenirs to business passengers.
The one distributed on KL695 that day wasnt any old house, either.
Its the house where our king and queen live, he said.
According to the booklet that came with it, Huis ten Bosch is the residence of King Willem-Alexander, Queen Mxima and their children. Thats the very king who occasionally moonlights as a KLM pilot, but there was no royalty at the controls on my flight: His Majesty is qualified on the Boeing 737, not the 787.
Tumblr media
That very nice interaction with the flight attendant and the story behind the Delft house ended the flight on a high note for me, but overall, the service was OK, not great. There were moments of slight confusion during meal services, and dinner lasted way too long.
Overall impression
You dont need to be an aviation enthusiast to see how pretty this 787 was on the inside and out, and even a casual flyer notices the Dreamliners smooth, quiet ride. Add a very good biz-class seat, and you have the makings of a very nice Atlantic crossing.
Tumblr media
Coming off the flight on a cold night in Toronto, I reasoned that Id just flown in a better biz seat than most Delta One seats, certainly better than any Lufthansa seat short of first class, and on par with the best seats offered on KLMs sister airline, Air France. It would just have needed better service to compete for greatness. That said, you would not be disappointed if you redeemed a reasonable number of miles for KLM biz class on the Dreamliner.

Middling hard product on this aircraft, and the cabin was kept far too warm.
TPG employees are no strangers to doing crazy travel-related stunts. Hawaii for 12 hours? Yep. Singapore for even less? Absolutely.
However, I recently embarked on one of my crazier trips since I started working here just over three years ago. As the trip grew closer, my parents and friends would ask, “Where are you going again?”
And I’d reply, “Bogotá, via Madrid.”
Cue the blank stares.
Basically, the goal for this trip was to review Air Europa’s 787-8 Dreamliner. We hadn’t reviewed the Spanish airline since TPG himself flew its A330 between New York and Madrid. Since then, though, the airline has grown quite a bit, and taken delivery of new Dreamliners in the process. Currently, the airline has a mix of the -8 and -9 variants, and each version features lie-flat seats in a 2-2-2 arrangement up front, though it’s an … interesting … inward-oriented product that objectively isn’t as good as its hometown rival Iberia, never mind some of the world’s top carriers.
However, the airline recently shared plans to equip its forthcoming -9s with a much more competitive 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone product, similar to what you’d find on airlines like Air France on (some of) its 777s and 787s and Royal Air Maroc on its new 789s. Once the newest -9s with the latest biz product enter service, we’ll definitely be there to review, but on this trip, we were focusing on the -8 to see how it stacks up — and to see if it surpassed the wholly underwhelming experience TPG had way back in 2011.

Booking
When we began looking for flights to book, we noticed that there were reasonably priced fares that included a segment in business and in coach (review coming soon!) from Madrid (MAD) to Bogotá (BOG) and Lima (LIM). I’d been to Peru before, so I decided that I’d spend the weekend in Bogotá. But, I figured that I might as well review some more products on this trip, so I ended up making things a lot more interesting by booking three separate tickets that would allow all of this to happen:
A round-trip economy ticket from New York-JFK to MAD (already flown) and then from MAD to Paris CDG to New York-JFK (upcoming)
A round-trip ticket between MAD and BOG with one segment in biz and one in coach (already flown)
A round-trip ticket business-class ticket from MAD-CDG-JFK (already flown) and then from JFK-MAD (upcoming)
Tumblr media
Basically, I’m crazy. But, hey, this is what we do, right?
As Air Europa is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, a good place to start searching for award flights is Air France-KLM’s FlyingBlue program, which is probably the best engine for searching SkyTeam availability. However, FlyingBlue doesn’t maintain an award chart, meaning you can’t count on redeeming miles at a fixed rate for flights. I did a search on the site for some of Air Europa’s flights between its base in Madrid and the US cities it serves (New York-JFK and Miami) and found one-way business-class tickets for as little as 59,000 miles on select dates, though more commonly they were hovering around 70,000 to 100,000 one-way. You can expect to pay around $65 in taxes and fees when you book award tickets through FlyingBlue.
The benefit of booking through FlyingBlue, of course, is how easy it is to amass miles in the program. It’s a transfer partner of all three major transferable points currencies — American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou — so even if you don’t have enough points in one account, you can combine points from the various accounts in order to acquire the FlyingBlue miles necessary for booking the flight you want. If you’re short miles in any of these accounts, you could sign up for a card like The Platinum Card® from American Express, which is currently offering 60,000 bonus points after you make $5,000 in purchases in the first three months of cardmembership. Depending on your travel dates, it may not get you all the way to a ticket, but it’ll certainly get you close.
Since we paid cash for this ticket, I was eager to add my Delta SkyMiles number to the reservation so that I could earn MQMs and MQDs for my trip. Tragically, though, I made a critical error. I booked my round-trip Air Europa ticket without double checking which fare classes I was purchasing, and when I called Delta after noticing I earned 0 miles for the trip, I was kindly informed that the business segment had booked into the “O” class, and economy into the “P,” meaning I wasn’t eligible to earn any miles at all for the trip. SIGH. You’d think that after three years in the biz (get it?) I wouldn’t make mistakes like this, but, alas, I am merely human. I guess that’s what I get for trying to be clever and flying all the way to Madrid to pick up a discounted business-class ticket to Bogotá.

I arrived in Madrid earlier on the morning of my Air Europa flight, but since Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport  is so close to the city, I decided to take a 20-minute Uber ride to meet TPG senior writer and Madrileña Lori Zaino for a quick meal in the city before hopping back across the Atlantic (though this time around I’d be landing in South America). My flight was scheduled to depart at 3:15pm, so I showed up at Madrid’s Terminal 2 around 1:30pm.
Tumblr media
Things were quiet when I arrived, so I was able to drop my bag and made my way through the VIP security line in under 10 minutes.
Tumblr media
Flying SkyTeam out of Madrid means that you don’t get to hang out in the iconic terminal that Iberia and its Oneworld partners call home. T2 is still clean, relatively bright and has plenty of shopping and dining for those with time to kill.
Tumblr media
AirEuropa doesn’t have its own lounge in Madrid but rather uses a third-party lounge, called Sala VIP Cibeles, for its business-class passengers. This lounge also happens to be in the Priority Pass network, so even if you’re flying economy, you can access the lounge if you have your membership credentials and a boarding pass for same-day travel.
Tumblr media
In total I spend about an hour in the lounge — I had just eaten a full meal in Madrid and was feeling the effects of my red-eye flight the night before, so I stuck to water and walking around the lounge so I wouldn’t fall asleep in a chair and miss my flight to Bogotá. The lounge was bright, open and airy, but it was quite crowded (it emptied out toward the end of my visit) and was essentially one giant room, so it got loud — and very warm.
Tumblr media
It did, however, have interesting features that gave it extra oomph. Take, for example, the wide and varied selection of wine and cava — this was Spain, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or the outdoor deck — perfect for planespotting if you’re me, or tanning and smoking if that’s your thing.
Tumblr media
I went back inside and took a look at the food selection. It was nothing special, but I did think everything was presented nicely, and employees replenished selections often.
Tumblr media
As a Priority Pass lounge, Cibeles was great. There was plenty to eat and drink, it was clean and even had a lovely outdoor space. As a business-class lounge, though, it felt a little bit crowded and just very large — it felt like the Delta Sky Club at JFK T4, which I firmly believe isn’t up to a business-class standard, especially with American and United providing top-notch lounges for premium flyers.
Eventually, I couldn’t take the heat, so I made my way to the gate in hopes of cooling down a bit. I arrived to a crowded gate area, as a Saudia flight to Jeddah (JED) was boarding next to our gate, and there wasn’t a ton of differentiation between the two areas. Things calmed down once that flight was boarded, and just a few minutes later, gate agents appeared to start our boarding process.
Tumblr media
Business-class passengers were called on board after those who needed extra time, though we were met with a traffic jam in the jetway, and it was apparent gate agents weren’t aware that no one had even gotten on the plane yet because the line kept building up behind me. After what seemed like an eternity (really it was only a few minutes), I was aboard our Dreamliner.

My first impression of the cabin was that it was quite small and intimate — similar to the feeling I got when I flew Korean Air last year and Xiamen Air before that.
Tumblr media
The seats themselves were arranged in an all-forward-facing 2-2-2 configuration across four rows.
Tumblr media
This specific product, though, is fairly uncommon and a new one for me. Each seat faced slightly inward, so passengers were oriented toward each other. It was basically the same seat that Royal Air Maroc chose to use on its 788s, though the seats on RAM are staggered in the sense that one seat is higher than the other within the same pod, and Air Europa’s were on the same level.
Tumblr media
On paper, this kind of configuration is outdated and not competitive, but the cabin was just about half full, which meant that I had a set of two seats to myself — as did just about everyone else.
Tumblr media
I was seated in 2G, an aisle seat in the middle section. I wasn’t able to score a window seat because I booked fairly close to departure.
Tumblr media
It didn’t have a ton of storage. There was a bin behind the headrest that I used for my passport, wallet and phone, and then a shelf below the inflight-entertainment screen and a cubby under the footrest where my shoes went. When I wasn’t using them, I stored the blanket and pillow on the seat next to me.
Tumblr media
On the left side of the seat were the universal AC outlet, USB port, headphone jack, privacy divider, seat controls, reading light and IFE remote. The USB port wasn’t working for me, so I dug out my charging “box” and plugged it in to the AC outlet, which charged my phone quickly.
Tumblr media
Each of the 22 seats was about 20.5 inches wide and when fully flat offered a bed of 78 inches (6 feet, 6 inches). There was a mattress pad, too, which frankly shocked me (in the best way possible). I was able to get comfortable with no issue, but after a while I got really warm with both the mattress pad and the duvet — there were no individual air vents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Business-class passengers had access to two lavatories — one in the front of the cabin and one in the back. Predictably, the rear one was also used by economy passengers, so sometimes there were lines. They were about as standard as they come, though the front lav did have a few amenities.

When I got on board, I found a large pillow wrapped in a fabric bag, a pair of mediocre headphones, a blanket and mattress pad wrapped in plastic and an amenity kit.
Tumblr media
The amenity kit fabric had a chevron design I actually liked quite a bit — it reminded me of a cozy sweater.
Tumblr media
Inside, I found a pair of socks, an eye mask, earplugs, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a comb and various creams and lotions that would ensure I stayed moisturized and fresh for my arrival in Colombia.
Tumblr media
I found the IFE system to be generally intuitive, and the screen itself was sharp.
Tumblr media
The seat felt quite far from the screen, so even though it was a touchscreen, I preferred to control it with the provided remote, which also had a small touchscreen built in to help control the system.
Tumblr media
I especially liked playing with the globe from my seat with the remote.
Tumblr media
The selection of movies and TV shows wasn’t particularly extensive, but I found enough content to keep me occupied while I wasn’t working or sleeping.
Tumblr media
The Wi-Fi situation was a little less pleasant. It worked — and quite well at that — but it was ridiculously priced. It cost 22 euros (about $25) for a 100 MB plan. I wanted to be able to stay in touch with the ground, as I was flying for most of the US work day, but I ran through 100 MB in a matter of minutes. So I ended up buying two more packages — spending almost $70 in the process — in order to just stay kinda, sorta connected intermittently.

Before this flight, I truly had no idea what to expect from Air Europa’s catering. Long story short, I was very pleasantly surprised. Just reading the menu got me excited — it seemed to me that the airline really wanted to present unique dishes with a Spanish tilt. Cabin service started shortly after I sat down. I was offered a choice of cava or orange juice, and went for the cava, which I was a big fan of. In fact, I asked for another glass before we even pushed back from the gate, and the flight attendants were happy to give me a refill.
Tumblr media
We experienced quite a bit of turbulence on our climb out of Madrid, so the start of the meal service was delayed, but it was no bother, since we had plenty of flying ahead of us and it was a daytime flight.
First, FAs came around to take orders for another round of drinks. I asked for a still water and a Diet Coca-Cola. When they came back with my beverages, they also asked if I would like some sushi. This took me by surprise, as it was nowhere to be found on the menu, but I happily accepted their offer. I also got a bowl of potato chips, which reminded me of Spanish bars that serve tapas with each drink. The sushi came with a seaweed salad on the side, and I thoroughly enjoyed it — it wasn’t of the quality that you’d find on, say, Japan Airlines, but it did the trick.
Tumblr media
After the sushi course was complete, flight attendants returned to take orders for the starters and main course. The starters on the menu included: red and yellow cherry-tomato salad with duck breast, mozzarella and pesto; and cod rillettes with paprika mayonnaise, olive oil and salad.
Since these were distinct dishes, I thought I had to choose between the two, but when I asked which was better, the FA told me that I would be having both. OK, cool! I’ll take it! Then she told me that I got to choose between a pineapple, lemon and ginger detox juice (no, this wasn’t a trendy Downtown New York City cafe) and a pumpkin-and-orange soup. I chose the soup. I frankly was blown away by the quality and taste of the food — everything was fresh and packed with flavor. Even the cod rillettes, which I was initially skeptical about, turned out to be quite delicious when paired with the provided crackers.
Tumblr media
I was already getting full at this point, but it was time for the main course. I had the choice of: grilled Iberian ham with mushrooms, cream sauce and sherry vinegar; grilled sea bass with roasted leeks, grilled mushrooms, peas and mashed potatoes in a wine sauce; and eggplant and scamorza panciotti with a cava sauce, Parmesan cheese and chives.
I wanted to have the Iberian ham dish because, well, Spain, but the FA told me they were out of it, which was sort of shocking to me given how empty the cabin was. The pasta was my second choice, and they did have a dish for me. It did not disappoint, either. It was gloriously rich — more than enough to put me into the mood for a nice nap.
Tumblr media
At this point, I was so stuffed that I had to refuse dessert, which involved both a selection of cheeses and a caramel and coffee cake.
After a lovely nap, more work and movies and about two hours before we were scheduled to touch down in Bogotá, it was time to eat again!
The evening snack consisted of a selection of fruit, crudites with black olive tapenade and then a choice of either chicken breast with roasted baby potatoes and broad beans or a prawn curry with seasonal vegetables. I chose the chicken and found it to be just as good as the main meal I’d had several hours earlier. I loved the presentation, too — the chicken dish was served in an adorable miniature Dutch oven that had some real weight to it. And the fruit and crudites were presented in a way that made me think that I was in a cosmopolitan cafe in New York or London, not on board Spain’s second airline.
Tumblr media
Overall, I was blown away with the menu options, presentation and quality of the food. I really wasn’t expecting any of it, and it left with me a great impression of the airline. Even a simple thing like midflight water bottles was made cool with a carton of boxed water instead of the regular plastic bottle.

I found the service to be excellent on all fronts. The flight attendants were attentive, generally on the ball, friendly and patient with me as I spoke to them in Spanish. They knew it wasn’t my first language, but were happy to see me putting my years of classes and study abroad into practice. They were eager to chat, and it genuinely felt like they were enjoying their jobs and serving the customers.
Overall Impression
I really had a great first flight with Air Europa. Despite a wholly average experience on the ground, Air Europa impressed me. The business-class hard product may be middling on the 788, but the rest of the experience stood out. It wasn’t because it was over-the-top luxe — it certainly wasn’t — but friendly and relaxed service, unexpected amenities like a mattress pad and delicious food presented in a fun and totally different way made me a fan of this airline.
Tumblr media
Air Europa isn’t an airline that can rest on its laurels like any of the other major European carriers. It has to set itself apart somehow to attract business that would normally go to Iberia, Air France, Lufthansa and many others. Once it takes delivery of the new 789s with a very competitive hard product — in some cases much better than its peers — I have no doubt that this quirky airline will continue to grow and win plenty more fans along the way.

Growth in Halifax pro sports scene a good sign
Soccer players from around the region hit the turf on Thursday, trying to turn their soccer goals into a new reality.
But the new team joins three other professional sport leagues in the city.
More than 100 hopefuls were sprinting, weaving, and hoping to earn a call back to Friday's try outs.
“We said don't leave anything on the bench, put it all out there,” said David Clanachan
Commissioner of the Canadian Premier League.“Because we've got coaches right from across Canada, representing all the teams, looking at and evaluating talent, so there’s a distinct opportunity here.
The Canadian Premier League is soccer's newest outlet in Canada.
There are seven teams across the country, including the Halifax Wanderers.
This time next year, the city will also welcome a professional lacrosse team, as the national league expands to Halifax.
But instead of crowding the market, officials say more teams means more choice.
“The more events we have and the more sports and entertainment we have in this city, the more vibrant this city feels,” said Carrie Cussons, the president of Scotiabank Centre.“For folks, especially young families and people that choose to want to live here, I think it's great to be able to have those sorts of sports and entertainment offerings right here in Halifax.”
And through all of this, Maritime football is still working towards a CFL team in the region. They say as support for one team grows, it actually increases support for other sports.
“This is a region on the move,” said Kristan Hines, spokesperson for Maritime Football Ltd.“And from a CFL perspective, we know the league wants to be here, we know the players want to play here, we have the population and the fan base to support a team.”
But first, teams need players, some as young as sixteen.
Mykeo Parker-Christmas is still in high school, but he's hoping to nab a spot on the home team.
“Playing for my home city would be one of the greatest things,” said Parker-Christmas.
The Halifax Wanderers should begin playing in April, while lacrosse fans will see their first matches in December 2019.
