#The changeling. (Emilia)

“If you’re gonna keep staring at me, I’ll have to charge a fee.” Emilia said, glaring at the stranger watching her. She didn’t do anything so it was likely they were just surprised to see a blank changeling, but it didn’t make it any less annoying to be stared at.

When I talk about the clan and I mention kids, the clan takes in runaways and kids with no where else to go. Sometimes toddlers, usually teens but there are a lot of young adults. Elwin may be a trash can but he is protective of the younger kids and has rules with dire consequences about how they should be treated.
When Alya was in the clan, she was in charge of caring for the younger kids but now Thyme and Emilia do it in shifts.
Elwin won’t get violent with children. He might snap at them but he will apologize to them for it cause he’s “just stressed” once they’re teens they lose that protection from Elwin’s anger. He won’t directly harm them but he’s not as “nice”
He will hurt the teens if they try to escape the clan especially if they stole supplies. He’s more likely to yell and release them as long as they haven’t stolen from the clan but he might beat them before they go.
The kids fear him but try not to show it and trust Thyme and Emilia to keep them safe.
Thyme plays a motherly figure to them that Alya used to fill while Emilia has that sisterly vibe. She (and Alya) will take blame for something a kid did to keep Elwin from getting pissed off.

2024 Reading Wrap
I read 41 books in total in 2024 which wasone above my goal! They were all fantastic.
(Disclaimer: I'm aware that some authors on my list are problematic with their views. I became aware AFTER reading them or I was aware and bought them at a very discounted price to minimise any funds that go to them. Reading IS and always has been political).
What i read:
Geek Love by Katherine Dunn
The Changeling by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley
Poor Things by Alasdair Gray
Crazy to Leave You by Marilyn Simon Rothstein
The Backbone of the World by Stephen Graham Jones
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield
Welcome to Our Hillbrow by Phaswane Mpe
Well by Lisa Kron
In the Dreamhouse by Carmen Maria Machado
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (reread)
In Between Two Worlds by Steven Cranston
Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
Upgrade by Blake Crouch
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
Tangerine by Christine Mangan
The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
These Infinite Threads by Tahereh Mafi
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
The Wicked King by Holly Black
The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black
All This Twosted Glory by Tahereh Mafi
Part of Your World by Abbey Jimenez
Twilight by Stephanie Meyer (reread)
The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Legendary by Stephanie Garber
Finale by Steohanie Garber
The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe (short story)
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
Weyward by Emilia Hart
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
The Ghost Woods by C.J Cooke
Nightwood by Djuna Barnes
Brainwyrms by Alison Rumfitt
Ness by Robert Macfarlane and Stanley Donwood
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
The Inmate by Frieda McFadden
Spectacular by Stephanie Garber
The Christmas Tree Farm by Laurie Gilmore
I thoroughly enjoyed each of these books (because I will DNF if I'm not enjoying it ngl) and rated quite a few of them five stars. However, I do have my favourites:
5th : Well by Lisa Kron
This is a 'well' thought out play that had me inteuiged from the start. It reflects on illness through a neighbourhood of people and different characters, specifically character Lisa's mother. It's funny and reflective and a big recommendation! What i really loved about this is the creativity of it. Creating this through the form a play creates an interesting idea on a stage, rather than on a page! I also just had a lot of fun reading it.
4th: The whole Caraval series by Stephanie Garber
A young adult series that follows two sisters who decide to join the game of Caraval. It's a young adult series so a nice, simple read. It's perfect for resting your brain and escaping from reality for a little while, which is exactly why I loved it. The characters were fun and it was filled with magic, something I need after a hard semester. Not only this, but also how fast paced each book was! It was such a fun and easy going read!
3rd: Poor Things by Alasdair Grey
I love this book so much and genuinely think the film did not do it justice! Please, if you can, READ THIS BOOK. Based in Glasgow, McCandless befriends scientist Godwin Baxter, who saves a woman's life after she jumped from a bridge. What i really loved in this book is the medical/scientific illustrations, which usually reflect on something in the chapter. I also loved the reversal of gender roles and how the book raises the question 'where does a story really begin?' Also the ending was a masterpiece (and completely different from the film. BETTER than the film) (I'm not hating on the film, it's a great movie, but a horrible adaptation).
2nd: In the Dreamhouse by Carmen Maria Machado
A real life story from Machado's life. Her experience of abuse in a lesbian relationship and her reflections. What makes this book great is the structure- she writes in second person narrative whilst writing about the abuse, and first person when talking about herself BEFORE the abuse. This was such an incredible read, yet not very enjoyable due to the themes. Her formatting is genius and puts us in the situation. Literally. She uses a 'choose your own adventure story' as a chapter to make the reader experience everything with her. Her use of chapters in general is fascinating and is why this book is 2nd on my top 5 list. Specifically the 1 page chapter 'dreamhouse as epiphany'. Such a hard hitting page that really makes you reflect and close the book for a few minutes. I could talk about this book all day.
In the Dreamhouse was fighting for top spot but my heart just really feels that there was a series above all else. I was hyperfixated for months (and still am) and wouldn't stop yapping about it. It's plot twists had my jaw hanging. The characters had me laughing and sometimes panicking for them.
My top book (series) of 2024 was The Cruel Prince/Folk of the Aire series!
These books have such a chokehold on me. The end of part 1 in the 1st book had me gasping. My eyes were traveling back and forth across the page so fast and I really couldn't put the book down. I had to force myself to stop after The Queen of Nothing, rather than going onto The Stolen Heir, to try calm my obsession down a little. The politics in this book are incredible and well thought out. The drama was so well written and Black really was good at the twists and turns of the book. I never expected half the things to happen!
Also, Jude may be my most favourite character i have ever read. She's so cool and clever. Kinda crazy too but that's why she's such an interesting character. Cardan's character development is amazing too and his back story made me feel so genuinely sorry for him. All the other characters are so good and well written too. Theyre so diverse in personality. Just overall, this series was a big wow and I am still obsessed.
So that was 2024! I'm not setting myself a book goal this year, even though I found my 40 quite easy. It's unecessary pressure on myself! I have a busy year ahead, but so many books to read, so I'm just going with the flow. I can't wait to read more new books as I have fantastic ones up on my shelves waiting for me to pick them.

Hey! Hows your game going? Mine just did the first 2 bits of the interactive tome and loved it and next session is the Dinner!!
I’m so glad to hear it! We just finished the second bit of the Interactive Tome and it was pretty crazy. Kick your players’ asses at the dinner. Turn that social pressure up. Reveal knowledge Strahd couldn’t possibly know about their backstories. Hurt them.
How Our Game Is Going
The short answer is: bad.
The longer answer is that the Tatyana PC (me) went to Ravenloft for three days in exchange for Strahd sparing the life of our bloodhunter, who then subsequently got himself killed by trying to stop Leo from being taken (and likely re-killed) by Strahd. We met the Abbot who wanted her soul. Not good! Our changeling got a new eye from the Abbot. Very cool!
Our druid/fighter changeling is spying for Strahd and went along with my PC to get some cred from Ravenloft for being able to convince her to go + is also pursuing a romance with Rahadin. We both switched to our backup characters because my DM wanted us to both play, still!
Highly recommend making a backup for all Tatyana PCs. HIGHLY.
So I am once again playing Emilia! Been convincing Kasimir that she can be fixed (she cannot) and convincing Victor that his tenure as Baron of Vallaki is super temporary (it is not).
She’s supposed to be Frankensteining Dmitry Krezkov’s wife back to life but she had a breakdown after finding out her actual parentage so consequently, Kasimir’s got her on a leash so she can’t be Dr. Malpractice. Their relationship is becoming so sad. I’m suffering so bad.
Blood moon next session, though.
#asked and answered#campaign summary#questions about the sorority!#thanks so much for asking this. I was frothing and hoping someone would ask.

Now I’m curious what the deceased would have been species wise in MLP.
//Well, if you want the quick versionswith the characters that I missed,
Hiroko would be an Earth Pony just like her son.
Haiji would be a Unicorn, but have a broken horn in place of his broken arm.
Chinami would be a Unicorn because she's got that Rarity sass.
Mikado would a Changeling.
Kazuomi would be an Earth Pony.
Shinitani Yozora would be a Pegasus.
For the UUV, Ayumu would be an Alicorn, like Hajime, Marin would be a Seapony, Mikoto would a Dragon, Aruma would be an Earth Pony, Mitsunari would be a Unicorn, and Kego would be a Griffon.
Yui would probably be a Unicorn.
Emilia Feng would be a Changeling.
Seishi Yodogawa and Zen Katagiri would both be Pegasi.
The Monokubs would all be robo-ponies or whatever.

I do have something for this, actually! In the World of Darkness setting, vampires are... not quite definitionally opposed to fae, but they're definitely not buddy buddy. The stasis of vampires, their unchanging nature, is basically metaphysical poison to the fae. This means that getting their current human vessel turned into a vampire is one of the vanishingly few things aside from cold iron that can permanently kill them, and produces one fucked up vampire besides. They don't appreciate this, for obvious reasons. For the vampire's part, fae are irritating, chaotic, problem-causing little shits and can also throw fire around like it's confetti. There's a lot of variation by Clan, from the Toreadors often moving in similar circles and politely ignoring or playing ball with them, to the Ravnos occasionally hunting fae for sport and suffering exactly the consequences you'd expect for that.
In my particular case, I have Alva. Alva is a vampire. Allegedly. She's fucking weird by vampire standards, and that is in no small part due to the fact that when she was a very young vampire, unguided by anyone having explained shit to her, she wound up by some old standing stones practicing Auspex, and met a rather odd soul. They talked, danced around the point for a bit, and it turned out she worked as a therapist. They actually hit off quite well, and she served as a very helpful anchor for the general mess of new vampire life. They'd meet up a few more times, and eventually Alva rolled her very first Aura Perception on her. This rolled a botch. Which lead to Alva, a raging bisexual in life and increasingly so in death, to misinterpret the rainbow-tinged aura of a fae as flirtatious intent. A while later, Emilia learned about this, and in true fae fashion, ran with it.
Things... developed from there. Whether they got better or worse is honestly subject to viewer discretion! Neither of them particularly care though. This has wound up with her developing the Code of Honour merit specifically due to her exposure to Emilia and fae conduct in general, and she'll be permanently Enchanted (the WoD method by which a fae can pull a non-fae partially into their side of things) soonish, after this months-long, slow circling courtship/political clusterfuck. She's likely to shift off to a sub-road of Humanity as her governing mental framework due to this too. And overall, she is very much winding up, ironically enough, like the old changeling stories. She's like most vampires. The basis looks the same. But there's something off about her, a tilt of a few degrees in perspective that doesn't fit with them anymore. A little spark of madness, treated like a treasured gift. She wouldn't have it any other way.
Stuck on the idea of vampires as a kind of reverse fae, or like someone's twisted, perverse attempt at moulding humans into fae.
They're repelled by liminal spaces.
A vampire could never enter fairyland, not just because they'd never be welcomed, but because most of the usual entry-ways are naturally barred to them.
They can't cross running water. They can't be seen in mirrors. They will wait forever at a crossroads, unable to pick a direction to go in. They can't even step over a thresh-hold unless there is absolutely no ambiguity about whether they are welcome inside.
They crave human blood, iron and salt, but are repelled by herbs and plants. They are supernaturally prevented from harming you unless the rules of hospitality have been invoked.
A fairy may replace your newborn child with something unnatural and ever-hungry. A vampire will do the same, but with your grandmother's corpse.
The fae are typically associated, even in stories where they're the bad guys, with flourishing and purity. Vampires, even in stories where they're the good guys, are typically associated with decay and corruption.
The fae turn ancient human burial mounds into fancy halls for their courts. Vampires take ancient human castles and let them grow mildewed and cobwebbed, exchanging the beds for coffins, turning them into burial places.
Fae don't tend to live among humans, but can generally pass for them with relative ease if they so choose. Vampires nearly always live among humans, but tend to find not revealing themselves a huge struggle.
I can't think of many stories I've read where fae and vampires even exist in the same universe, let alone ones where they actively interact. I feel like their enmity is almost more inevitable than that between vampires and werewolves, however.
The rivalry between vampires and werewolves is, essentially, the rivalry between two apex predator species who share a territory. (Even in stories where the werewolves aren't actually hunting humans.)
The vampires hate the werewolves because the werewolves interfere with their access to prey. The werewolves hate the vampires either because they consider themselves aligned with humans (the prey species), or because they are also predators and the vampires are competing with them.
By comparison, I think there's some story potential in the fae finding something genuinely creepy and uncanny valley about vampires.
They're immortal, like them, but also dead. They can be beautiful, like them, but that beauty is something they actively require humans to sustain. They like to inhabit beautiful and ancient ex-human dwellings, like them, but they actively work to make those places dark, damp and empty.
Fairies who are unflappable in the face of all sorts of Otherworldly monsters, can look an eldritch horror in the eye(s) without blinking, and have never been phased yet by any human, but will recoil from even the weakest vampire.
Vampires who hate fairies just as much, but in a more envious way. The way that the creature for whom immortality is a curse is bound to hate the creatures for whom immortality is an eternity of sunlight and laughter.
Maybe their touches burn each other. Maybe vampires can't stand physical contact with anything so alive and vital. Maybe immortal fairies become ill from too much exposure to the undead.
Maybe they fight over the human population when their territories overlap. The fairy need for servants and people to make deals with, competing with the vampire need for thralls and blood to drink.
Just… fairies and vampires. We need more stories about them interacting.

Fun fact number 4
I’ve had Alya and Emilia’s character arcs planned since before the blog existed. They were characters I made when I was gonna try to play D&D but my attention span made it impossible for me to play so I sidelined them before deciding to write them instead.
Elwin and Thyme’s stories also have been fully planned since before the blog, the only difference being that Thyme was going to bea bit more of an asshole in the D&D campaign (still less than Elwin but they would be more or less okay with his violence) and I mellowed them out and gave them morals and their own plotline to struggle with.

Campaign sketch. Here there be spoilers!
Our changeling druid is spying (though the party doesn’t know this) for Rahadin and pursuing a romance (the party DOES know this) with him. The Festival of the Blazing Sun culminated in this scene, in which Emilia asked where Kit, the changeling was. They scoffed and walked away, trying to get into the room the party shared before Emilia, a half dusk elf, decided to suddenly and wildly attack them as a treat. She downed Kit in one round before the rest of the party neutralized her.
When we left off, Emilia had agreed to work with Kit tentatively because of common goals, but she made everyone sit in the morality of having her do so—which is hilarious because I think she’s the most immoral member of the party. I’m fairly certain Kit now has it ABSOLUTELY out for her and that she won’t be the last female dusk elf for long…
On the other hand, Kit is such a fabulous player character that I hope we can redeem them through the overwhelming power of love and friendship from places other than Ravenloft. Not Emilia, but everyone else can. It should take a while since Kit’s pretty entrenched, but I think it can theoretically happen.
