Glad you liked it! It makes me really really happy that it had a positive impact on a few people. I kinda cringe looking back at it, it was full of spelling mistakes and inconsistencies and really odd narrative choices (holyyy shit the fig tree motif that was supposed to be a core thing was poorly brought up and feels so out of place reading back) but it was my first attempt of actually writing character dialogue and an overarching story. TikTok is EVILL I can’t believe how shitty I felt about myself due to a few comments saying it was mediocre like yeah duh it was my first attempt writing something that wasn’t an essay for school! Of course it wasn’t perfect!!! Why is it a crime to not have professional level work for a hobby. That app is super cruel to beginners, the “art lore” stuff there that’s just bullying kids for being bad at anatomy is super malicious. But despite that scrambling to post videos during lunch in the middle of a noisy cafeteria while also prepping for a math test is memories I cherish lol. It’s kind of annoying that I think the thing I’ll be most remembered for are my characters that I developed as an edgy teenager since I’m not really planning on sharing more of my stories publicly but it makes me super thrilled that people found value in it. Okay okay sorry I’m rambling I just get excited when people willingly read my work. It makes me feel like a 5th grader discussing my warrior cat ocs during recess again. I started working on this project back in December so the artstyle might be a bit wonky despite my efforts to keep it somewhat consistent lol. Studies got in the way but Sun & Moon brain rot remains strong.

OK, SO the bug thing is not technically canon to the series. It's based on my own headcanons for fairy biology, but i do have justifications for it!! Fairies have very strong shape-shifting abilities, so it would make sense that the form they show to humans isn't necessarily their true form(not to mention extreme that mimicry is very common in insects). And you want to know the visible traits almost every fairy has in common? Being very small with Insect-like wings.

The fact that their humanoid form isn't their true form in actually confirmed in the show! Cosmo and Wanda are revealed to look like biblically accurate pseudo-angels in the museum episode. (I say pseudo angels because the Flaming Sword of Eden is only debatably sentient and I don't think is considered an angel. Ophanim are also debatably not angels because they don't have wings (sorry for the angel tangent I like angels))

So wouldn't their true forms be angelic then? Well, yes. But I like bugs so. Also I have more headcanons to justify myself. I like to think that they have both a true-true form (incomprehensible to the human brain, probably exists mostly in a dimension invisible to us, that looks how we imagine biblically accurate angels), and a fairy form (which is visible to humans but is naturally very insect like and tends to scare people). So, in order to interact with humans, they have to learn to shapeshift into a humanoid form but will occasionally slip if they get too relaxed/aren't careful, hence the mandibles coming out when he yawns!

The reason they struggle so much more with human forms than the animals or objects they typically turn into is that, well, they aren't trying to convince those animals or objects. The more human they try to look, the harder it is to keep up convincingly. If you turn into a really uncanny squirrel, only other squirrels will notice. If you turn into a really uncanny human, they form a lynch mob and burn you at the stake.

HEAR ME OUT ever since this song released it reminded me of Copia and Sister at their absolute worst, their most toxic, their most horrible state. They never fixed anything, they spiraled, they hate each other but they love each other. They ended at their absolute worst.

She infantalizes him, she doesn't let him pull out of her grasp ever, he's nothing without her, he isn't ready to tackle life without her. He's too naive, too weak and sensitive to be anywhere but right beside her. But then she gets angry when he gets sensitive, he's supposed to be a man, he's supposed to lead and be strong and independent.

She doesnt give him genuine affection, she doesn't hug him or hold him, it's all an empty display of superficial motherly love. And he hates her, he hates her for not being a mother to him, but he also hates himself for even feeling this way, because at least she gave him something. At least she didn't push him away completely.

And then when she dies he's relieved but he's also devastated. She's never really gone, he will be tied to her even after he's dead, she will always find him and will always decide for him. And what is he even without her? He never wanted to be like his parents. He despises his father and is forced to fill his shoes as Papa. He despises his mother and is forced to fill her shoes as Frater Imperator. And he's always ashamed when he mourns his place in the world and griefs the parental love he was never allowed to have.

I have absolutely no artistic ability to speak of, but for every song in Epic there's an animatic that lives in my brain and I wanted to ramble about some of the moments I visualize when I'm listening

In Open Arms, the lotus eater who says "scary cave" grabs onto Polites's leg when he tries to leave. Polites scoops it up as he sings his refrain the last time and hands it to Odysseus. On the line "there is so much guilt inside your heart", Odysseus looks down at the lotus eater in his arms and it briefly flashes to the baby from Just A Man

In Wouldn't You Like, Hermes essentially makes a bunch of shadow puppets to illustrate his points. On "she can conjure up a monster that'll grind you to the bone" he conjures an image of Scylla (both as foreshadowing and as a reference to the fact that Circe was the one who transformed her) and on the second "you can be hurt" he conjures an image of Polites

In Legendary, when Telemachus sings "trying to win the heart of my mom but she is standing tall" he passes the room where Penelope is unthreading the shroud and she winks at him. When he sings "and I could fight them if I was half as strong as you" he passes by Odysseus's bow to pick up his own, and he spends the rest of the chorus shooting at phantom monsters while Athena's owl looks on

In God Games, Athena finds Aphrodite in a room of statues connected by red strings. When she sings "claims to love his mother but let her die of a broken heart", she dissolves the string between Odysseus and Anticlea. When Athena sings "he was busy fighting", she illuminates the strings tying Odysseus to the statues of his crew, but when Aphrodite responds, "more like busy spiting the cyclops", she makes them all fade again but the one connecting him to Polites. When Athena is fighting Ares and he mocks Telemachus, a string blazes to life between her statue and his, and when she sings "and tell your lover that a broken heart can mend", she creates another string to tie her to Odysseus

Also in God Games, Hera and Athena approach Zeus's throne arm-in-arm, and when he sings, "you dare to defy me, to make me feel shame" he glares at Hera, knowing what made her decide to release Odysseus

Epic: The Musical X Life Series AU (this is just a list of who would be who, because your girl can’t draw to save a life)

It started with a ‘ wow I can kinda see life series Lizzie and Joel singing a Penelope and Ody song in the life series’ and now I have a new AU that I can’t draw because I dropped art and resigned myself to make animatics in my head instead.

(Take a shot every time I use vibes as reasoning and every time you think I’m coping over the end of wild life and epic)

Odysseus = Joel

It just fits, also I thought of Joel and Lizzie when thinking about Penelope and Ody so here we are. Also I want Joel to have his beard from last life start to grow over the course of the musical.

after jimmy (polites) dies, instead of wearing his tie around his head, we wears one of Jimmy’s canary feathers.

Penelope = Lizzie 

I mean if Joel is Ody, it just makes sense. Also idk the characters feel similar (according to my brain, which usually can’t be trusted).

Zeus = BigB

vibes. Pure vibes. Also I liked the BigB watcher theory and it just works here so give him watcher wings and eyes for this. Oh and in the horse and the infant make him talk to Joel using a jack-o-lantern that appears and disappears and Joel moves around.

Eurylochus = Grian

bad boys. That’s it, that’s the reasoning. Could see him singing luck runs out cuz of watcher lore (TM)

Polites = Jimmy

bad boys and tell me you can’t imagine life series Jimmy singing open  arms.

Athena = Gem

It’s just perfect. Also gem and Joel duo in wild life. Also warrior gem.

Aeolus = Skizz

Skizz has the whole angel thing going on and angels are in the sky. My logic and reasoning is amazing guys.

Poseidon = Etho

They’re obsessed with each other in every universe. Also I had Etho as Zeus at some point but then I remembered Poseidon existed.

Circe = Pearl 

Specifically red life Pearl with her Cloke. She’s gotta have the Cloke guys think of the vibes, give Pearl magic.

Hermes = Bdubs

Life series Bdubs and hermes are the same person. The vibes are there and they are strong.

Tiresias = Scar

specifically last life scar. There is a mysterious wind that follows him around that makes the Cloke flow dramatically behind him.

Telemachus = Martyn

Idk what my reasoning here is I think it’s just vibes again. Also I want to see Martyn fight ren.

Antinous = Ren

I wanted to see Martyn fight ren. Also specifically 3rd life red life Ren for the design.

Calypso = Jimmy 

it’s just Jimmy again except like genderbent. It would be funny.

Apollo = Scott

purely vibes.

Hephaestus = Mumbo

Aphrodite = Impulse

ANIMATION BREAKDOWN PROCESS OF THIS LETS GO (Sorry for any grammatical errors!)

SCRIPT/STORYBOARD: (you can watch here)

Now THIS. The script was very weak because I wanted to board immediately, so it started strong then fell off at the end (also generally I'm not a stronger writer, which haha fics my beloved). Now I know this, spending more time simmering with the script will genuinely only 1) stronger compositions for storyboards 2) it will be so much faster to board. Like I can board fast, but I can board fast AND well if I sit with the idea a bit longer. This will be a massive running theme how I like my shots earlier rather than further in.

side note I LIKE PANEL 11 A LOT, I just feeI didn't translate it well enough into animation which sucks because its a pretty panel and you get a softer moment from Olrox which I found was important to get across.

Also at some point, the 180 rule (which keeps characters on like one line behind the camera... not sure if I worded that right) gets broken and it bugged me for AGES but decided I had to just move on LOL.

These are my thumbnails b4 I go to animatic/cleaned storyboards which are SO MESSY (I'm a lot better at annotating my thumbs now LOL). The original prompt was top service blood bag x powerbottom vampire and i don't think i portrayed that well enough throughout BUT i think the intro did a good establishment. Which fun fact, this was scrapped but there was actually 20 seconds of Mizrak eyeing Olrox "What is it like? Blood?" Then Olrox leans down and commences the thigh glide.

These backgrounds are a mix of texture-bashing (walls/floors) along with some good ol' painting materials from scratch. Also, these are olddd and I can do a lot better yay, but was a good test to see how to make a consistent-ish scene.

I'll be super upfront how I don't like most of it AHHA. From starting this in July to posting this in September, I've improved a lot since then.

Since this was a bit ago, I don't remember too much but I remember going ham onto learning material from Dong Chang and animation servers. However in all honesty I think this was only really applied to the earlier shots. I got super frustrated with my "slow speed" so I tried to jump ship and do cleans super early on, which like lets be honest- pumping out two rough anims a day with uni on top is not slow idk what I was on about. This ended up giving me MORE work during the line/colour stage PFFT because I would end up correcting my mistakes in my roughs. Like Myst stop, this is for fun and you're learning, please take it easy LOLOL.

COMPOSITING:

Working on compositing this time around was slightly different, and I'll also admit it is not my favorite composite I've done (and again, I like my earlier shots then my later shots). My after-effects layers looked insane keeping track of the highlight glows on their clothes BUT it definitely paid off. Skin tones however were SO DIFFICULT (mostly in part to the fact I decided to experiment with how I approached it, so it definitely skewed how I worked with this)

I also definitely struggled between the dreamy look and keeping it clean and crisp, and while the dreamy blurred aesthetic does work in some cases, I opted out for the sake of clarity.

Beloved edge light my friend. It's making me learn SUPER late into it how I probably should have planned out a third shadow pass since edge light at the point is a crutch and I think planning it out ahead would get nicer more precise shadows LOL.

Because I brain rotted so hard for this animation I actually commissioned two people to help me work on this! I'll briefly talk about their stuff but please check out their work!

MUSIC: Astralbardkeep

Due the fact I don't have voiceactors, and I had a very specific vision in mind, I decided to go "you know what, let me be super self-indulgent". I had a lot of notes and inspirations for the music, BUT i wanted to have Olrox's theme from the original games peek through, which you will notice happens at the bite AND at the end.

This might've seemed overkill, but this friend of mine is very talented at making graphics/typography to suit the requirements of each individual project. (Also a secret ploy to make him make nocturne fanart /lh). So that entire end bit, he illustrated it along with that title, in which the themes I bestowed him were Mucha and Gothic art.

Suffice to say this was supposed to be a compare and contrast between the animation I did in February, and while I may not quite find this body of work up to my normal standards, it substantial amount of improvement, which is the most important thing here! With the ten billion other things in my life going on, I can only be happy with the progress thus far :D
