One of the loveliest sculptures I think I’ve ever seen. And it was made thousands of years ago in the Neolithic period.
‘The Sleeping lady’ 3300-3000 BC unearthed from the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum and now on the National Museum of Archeology in Valetta, Malta

can't believe I've never talked about my favorite bit of ancient greek history I've learned so far-- namely that in archaic Athens, which at the time had relatively few written laws, there were apparently so many people getting found in flagrante dilecto in the temple of Zeus that they actually put in a law forbidding sex on the temple grounds

Hives under Thebes
Against the walls of the Thebans Far as the serpents give sight Good night to the hollow nymphs sleeping Good morning to mirrors of fright.
Seven black gates, since the Theban King ruled with his scepter of teeth, To the grates of the night were departed And wine-lymph was dried in the street.
The cracks in the land filled with people, The people now filling with sand, And the cracks in the cracks lull the brood Asleep in the shawls of the land --
The hive builds a castle from nothing, The human still bows to the shell, And the mind in the brood chuckles sweetly, Old stories have nothing to tell.
Still the burrowing queen of the Thebans Remembers old Cadmus alone, The craft for all ages Survives the old sages, And we bury truth in the stone.

hey, can we talk for a second? it’s about your girlfriend. yeah, she’s great. no, yeah, I agree. It’s just that… she seems really devoted to you? Like really devoted. Almost as if you were the sole, fragile line mooring her to the shores of humanity. No, that’s not romant—ugh. Listen. Me and the girls, we’re worried you might be the last good thing to happen to her and that were some tragedy to inevitably befall you, she would tear the gods from their thrones and dye the infinite western seas wine-dark with their ichor. Do you think you could introduce her to a new hobby or something? we don’t want to have to argue over what color “wine-dark” is supposed to be

Because it is roman ancient law
useless ancient roman law facts
if you call someone to witness and they refused to show up, you are legally entitled to stand outside their house and scream, but only every third day
you can sell your son into slavery once or twice, but after the third time he doesn’t have to put up with that shit anymore
no wailing allowed at funerals
also you can only have ONE funeral per person, don’t get greedy
if your neighbor’s tree has a branch hanging into your yard, you can legally cut down the entire fucking tree
however, if some of your neighbor’s fruit from his dumb tree falls into your yard, he can legally come into your yard to snoop around get it
if you call someone to witness and they’re too sick or old to get to court themselves, you have to provide a cart for them to come in, but it doesn’t have to be, like, a nice cart if you don’t want it to

Love this! and, love to see a the citation of the original quote! Small clarification though: the Oresteia is an ancient Greek play by Aeschylus. You're referencing/quoting Anne Carson's 2009 translation (here it is side by side with a 9 other versions) ^_^

I've been seeing that quote go around and while making this I think I managed to track it back to "An Oresteia" by Anne Carson

was doing some research (again) on Eileithyia Cave for the Dancing Ground and this book on the site came up in the search results and absolutely Wrecked me
Tumblr media
Eileithyia was a childbirth goddess and her shrine is full of votives themed around babies, family, and pregnancy and this one on the cover seems to be of a woman in labor. But like, it looks exactly like a modern water birth?? Even the person behind supporting her? And like the way she's got her arm back to touch them uuuuughghghgh I'm feeling Unwell about this fucking figurine you guys
