This might just be a *me* thing, but I do find it kind of fascinating that almost every Feminist Greek Myth Retelling seems compelled to flatten Helen into a two-dimensional basic-bitch with no guilt or remorse for her actions despite the fact that self-loathing for her own beauty, a feeling of a lack of agency in the face of Aphrodite's whims and a complicated affection for and loyalty to both the Greeks and the Trojans are all major characteristics of hers in both The Odyssey and The Iliad. I'm sure this has nothing to do with the dynamics of modern feminism and patriarchy whatsoever.

let鈥檚 take a minute to talk about hecuba. hecuba, who saw her own husband die, hecuba, who鈥檚 daughter was cursed for not wanting to sleep with a god, hecuba, who had to wait days to get back the body of her favorite son, hecuba, who went from being queen to being a slave within a matter of days. hecuba who lost everything and everyone important to her and not being able to do anything about it.

Nothing like my usual posts but I just finished Babel by R.F. Kuang and I鈥檓 in a book hangover so I need something new to read.
If you know any books with gay characters, murder and dark academia vibes, or similar to the books I usually post about drop the title in my ask box pls.
(I also like historical fiction, thrillers, fantasy and occasionally romance, so if you have any favourites on those genres drop them too)

Quote
It was one of those moments that I think everybody experiences - and they don't have to be dramatic - when things begin to change; and you know there's no point ruminating about it, because thinking isn't going to help you understand. You're not ready to understand it yet; you have to live your way into the meaning.

Drums, pipes, trumpets, the rhythmical pounding of swords on shields- to the fighters, this music meant honour, glory, courage, comradeship . . . To the crows, it only ever meant food. They didn't care who won or lost; their day always ended well.

I felt as I used to do, as a very young girl, that the wind was the breadth of a god filling me with life.

Book review: The Women of Troy & The Silence of Girls by Pat Barker
Tumblr media
Rating:
The Women of Troy: 3猸愶笍
The Silence of Girls: 3猸愶笍
These retellings won't please everybody. Everyone has their own opinion/version and, after all, the Iliad is also one side of the story. And lately we've had many different versions from the female point of view.
In this case, both books tell us the story of Briseis. In the first book she tells the story from before, and right up untill the end of, the war of Troy; in the second one we have the aftermath of the war, and how everyone is handling it, or being handled with.
Briseis is our narrator, but sometimes we have the male point of view, although she tells every female story. And as such, through their silence she releases their pains.
