The US Ford Lima Engine - Like a Euro Ford Pinto, But Better @Stav-Tech
Great article, fully agree as worked on the UK version of the Pinto back in the day. I actually owned an import Ranger truck equipped with the Lima, far better engine. A ~900bhp 2.7ltr Ford Lima. Yes In the UK and Europe, the Ford Pinto was about the most popular Ford engine to tune in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, and to this day powers loads of fast road and race cars. The Pinto has spawned…

Nikola Tesla’s Thoughts On the Soul and Life After Death
Tumblr media
Tesla’s reasoning are the thoughts of a practical man of science, who has not only conducted experiments, but deep mental consideration to the question of immortality. Tesla was destined by his parents at an early age to enter the clergy, but the inventive genius, inherited from his mother, took him into the realm of science. Most of his life was spent in deep meditation to the question of the soul and life after death. His conclusions on the subjects will most definitely not run parallel with most others, but are indeed food for thought.
Here are 6 quotes made by Nikola Tesla:
1. When a child is born, its sense organs are brought in contact with the outer world. The waves of sound, heat and light beat against its feeble body, its sensitive nerve fibres quiver, the muscles contract and relax in obedience—a gasp, a breath, and in this act a wonderful little engine, of structure, is hitched to the wheelwork or the universe. Left to itself the engine stops; it has no power to draw energy from Nature’s inexhaustible store.
“The little engine moves and works, changes size and shape, performs more and more varied operations, becomes sensitive to more and more different influences, and now there begins to manifest itself in it a mysterious force. It becomes capable of responding to stimuli of a more subtle nature and of drawing, for its own use, energy from the environment. Gradually the engine has been transformed into a being possessed of intelligence, which perceives, discerns, does like others of its kind.
“The experiences multiply, the knowledge increases, the discernment becomes keener, the human being responding to the faintest influences, is awakened to the consciousness of Nature and its grandeur, and in its breast there is kindled a desire to imitate Nature, to create, to work itself the wonders it perceives.
”But the exercise of this power does not satisfy the mind, which rises to still higher, undefinable perceptions, not of this world, and inspired by them the artist, the inventor and the man of science give expression to the longing of the soul.
(“Shows How Men Of The Future May Become As Gods.” NEW YORK HERALD . December 30, 1900.)
Tumblr media
2. “That an aggregation of impressions, thoughts and feelings having no materiality, and vaguely designated as mind, or soul, should be substance susceptible of quantitative determination is altogether too absurd for discussion.
“The change however, which takes place in the human body during its awful transition from life to death is a great subject for scientific investigation which may possibly lead to important results. If the experiments of Massachusetts physicians are to be at all seriously considered, it is only in this respect.
“I could not help being struck by the fact that men of a scientific caliber sufficiently large to undertake measurements requiring the greatest delicacy and skill, should not be correspondingly resourceful in devising the apparatus for the purpose. A scale responding to the weight of one tenth of an ounce is not a fit instrument for weighing the human soul.
“It is not less astonishing that such trained observer should have overlooked a trivial cause responsible for the seeming lightening of the body. I use this term designedly, for accepting the exudations which have been taken into consideration there was no loss of substance in death.
“When the rigor mortis sets in there is an increase of volume for various reasons. Just to give a rough idea I shall assume that the living body, weighing a hundred and sixty pounds, had filled a space of three cubic feet. The air in a sick room may weigh about fourteen ounces per cubic feet. Half an ounce of the air would consequently occupy a space of sixty-two cubic inches, and that would be only one percent of the original volume of three cubic feet. As will readily be seen, a very slight general deformation of the body, scarcely perceptible, is adequate to explain the puzzling observation. The sudden tipping of the scale demonstrates nothing except the coarseness of the instrument. Had the balance been very sensitive, owing to the resistance of the air, the platform would have ascended slowly.“
–Nikola Tesla
(“Scientists Doubt The Human Soul Was Weighed.” New York World, March 17, 1907.)
Tumblr media
3. “Since time immemorial the most profound thinkers have tried to lift the veil that hides the beyond. I have read thousands of volumes of literature and thought for years in the hope that I might get some kind of evidence to show that death is not the end. But all in vain. To me the universe is simply a marvelous mechanism, and the most complex forms of human life, as human beings, are nothing else but automatic engines, controlled by external influence. Through incessant observation I have so convinced myself of the truth of this that I cannot perform any act or even conceive a thought without locating at once the external stimulus that prompted it.
“A forceful argument in support of the existence of a creative agent is made of the law, order and harmony perceptible everywhere. But it must not be forgotten that Kant’s reasoning and conclusion in this respect are irrefutable. According to this philosopher, the conception of fitness has been created in the speculative mind of men, which thus admires a miracle wrought by itself.
“Granted a planetary system, it is absolutely inevitable that in the course of eons such organized beings as we are will evolve. The cooling of the hot masses results in a precipitation of water, and under the influence of the sun’s rays heliotropic action takes place and life is started. Through chemical and other agents and continuous adjustment complex mechanisms come into being, and these ultimately develop into structures of marvelous complexity with capacities of response to the faintest stimulae from the environment.
“When we realize this as a fact we begin to grasp the great idea of Buddha–that self is an illusion. Indeed, we are nothing but waves in space and time which when dissolved exist no more.
“There is this to be said, however, that science without hope is not satisfactory, and unless one has some ideals he cannot achieve happiness. The religious is the most lofty ideal, and it seems that the great reformers who, ages ago, laid down rules of conduct were right in their conclusions that a peaceful existence and a continued onward march of man on this globe is essentially dependent on the conception of a God.
“I have read Mr. Burbank’s statement in which he expresses an opinion shared by most natural philosophers, but one must not be too rash in contradicting the conclusions reached by countless men of genius who spent their lives in endeavors to ascertain the destiny of the human race. A single individual, however well informed and capable, may be partially unaware of if not utterly blind to evidences of a certain kind, which might be quite sufficient for others. This is the reason why I am distrustful of my own findings. Possibly Mr. Ford, who I understand is accepting old traditions, may be closer to the truth than such men as Burbank and myself.
“I have searched during many years for some process or means to test the possibility of future existence by scientific experiment, and I have devised one, which, to my great disappointment, has failed. But perhaps some more skillful experimenter might succeed if I suggest to him the course. To put it briefly, it is this:
“Our bodies are composed of molecules of various elements, harmoniously united. Do these molecules retain any after-effect when the body is dissolved? To ascertain this take, say, two molecules of hydrogen from the body of an individual and also one molecule of oxygen. Furthermore, provide another molecule of oxygen taken from some other body. Now place the two molecules of hydrogen so they can combine with the oxygen, and if they prefer that molecule of oxygen with which they were previously united, then reincarnation is proved. For, though it may take ages and ages, ultimately the molecules which constituted that body will get together again, just as in a vast city individuals from a distant land finally meet and establish close contact.”
(“After Death — WHAT?” Lima News, Lima, Ohio, March 14, 1926.)
Tumblr media
4. “We are all automatons obeying external influences. We are entirely under the control of agents that beat on our senses from all directions of the outside world. Being merely receivers from the outside, it is a very important question how good the receivers are—some are sensitive and receive accurately. Others are sluggish and their reception is blurred. The individual who is a better machine has so much greater chance of achieving success and happiness. An individual who is an offender of law is a machine in which one or another organ has been deranged, so that the responses are no longer accurate.
“There is no chance in nature, although the modern theory of indeterminacy attempts to show scientifically that events are governed by chance. I positively deny that. The causes and effects, however complex, are intimately linked, and the result of all inferences must be inevitably fixed as by a mathematical formula.
“I also absolutely deny the existence of individuality. It took me not less than twenty years to develop a faculty to trace every thought or act of mine to an external influence. We are just waves in time and space, changing continuously, and the illusion of individuality is produced through the concatenation of the rapidly succeeding phases of existence. What we define as likeness is merely the result of the symmetrical arrangement of molecules which compose our body.”
“How about the soul - the spirit?” he was asked.
“Ah,” he exclaimed, “but there is no soul or spirit. These are merely expressions of the functions of the body. These life functions cease with death and so do soul and spirit.
“What humanity needs is ideals. Idealism is the force that will free us from material fetters.”
(“Tesla Seeks to Send Power to Planets.” New York Times, July 11, 1931.)
Tumblr media
5. “One of the most fundamental and also one of the saddest facts in human life is well brought out in a French proverb which, freely translated, means:
‘If Youth had the knowledge and Old Age the strength of doing.’
Our condition of body and mind in old age is merely a certificate of how we have spent our youth. The secret of my own strength and vitality today is that in my youth I led what you might call a virtuous life.
"I have never dissipated. When I was a young man I understood well the significance of that old French proverb, although I doubt that I had even heard it then. But I seemed to have a clear understanding while still young that I must control my passions and appetites if I wanted to make some of my dreams come true.
(“Tremendous New Power Soon To Be Released.” By Carol Bird. Charleston Daily Mail, Charleston, West Virginia, Page 40. September 10, 1933.)
6. “To me, the universe is simply a great machine which never came into being and never will end. The human being is no exception to the natural order. Man, like the universe, is a machine. Nothing enters our minds or determines our actions which is not directly or indirectly a response to stimuli beating upon our sense organs from without. Owing to the similarity of our construction and the sameness of our environment, we respond in like manner to similar stimuli, and from the concordance of our reactions, understanding is barn. In the course of ages, mechanisms of infinite complexity are developed, but what we call “soul ” or “spirit,” is nothing more than the sum of the functionings of the body. When this functioning ceases, the “soul” or the “spirit” ceases likewise.“
(“A Machine to End War.” Liberty Magazine, February 9, 1935.)

Slow Car Fast vs. Fast Car Slow: An Experience via /r/cars
Slow Car Fast vs. Fast Car Slow: An Experience
TL;DR: Fast car slow more fun than slow car fast. Jimmies rustled.
Though not as often parroted as it used to be on here, perhaps due to the ever increasing performance of cars across the board, "I'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" is one of the most common mantras of r/cars, second only to Miata Is Always The Answer (M.I.A.T.A.) Last week, I got a taste of both back to back and would like to share my perspective.
Let's start with the slow car. The 1988 Ford Mustang LX. How slow can that be? Well have you ever heard of the 2.3 Lima engine, probably most famous by the Ford Pinto? Yes, that Ford Pinto. This isn't the EcoBoost 2.3 we're talking about. This two valve iron pig wheezes out an anemic 88hp. With the free-er flowing exhaust and intake we might by up to a whopping 90hp on a good day. Slow car? Check.
bUt ThAt'S nOt A rEaL sLoW cAr, It'S hEaVy AnD cAn'T hAnDlE.
Maybe in stock trim, but not this particular one. It's far from heavy. The stock weight comes in at around 2700lbs. But this one has been carefully slimmed down. By which I mean it was missing a whole lot of stuff when we I bought it. Not much interior to speak of, no luxuries, and even the modern trend of no spare tire. Last weigh in it was just a hair under 2500lbs, no driver, so we're in NB/NC Miata weight range. Now for the handling. It's anything but stock there as well. It's got the benefit of a whole lot of upgraded suspension parts, mostly secondhand from my other Mustang. It's biggest weakness is it's still running a 4-link rear. Not quite the certain death and turning radius of a Nimitz class carrier people would make it out to be, particularly at this power level.
But enough about this heap. On to the driving. It's everything the cult of Miata worships. That engine has anything but a broad torque curve. It's gutless below 2500 RPM, and thanks to its archaic design runs out of steam by 4500 RPM. It's that skinny, asthmatic kid in your gym class that gets out of running the mile, begging for his inhaler. And with that narrow power band, you have to be very conscious, and really hammer it to keep it there. It reminds me of driving an old 2-stroke Detroit Diesel. Just like the old saying about those Detroits, the first step to driving it was to slam your nuts in the door to get you good and pissed off so you would flog the piss out of it just to get anywhere. With that total lack of power it was a momentum car. You had to carry speed with you as much as you could (and not just for corners, but for any hill larger than a speedbump for fear of rolling back down.) So you really had to wring it out and push it in every corner just to keep up your speed. With the stiff suspension and graciously wide 225s on it, it stayed planted. You sure didn't have to worry about overpowering it coming out of a turn, as even mashing the throttle to the rusty floorboard (weight reduction, right?) wouldn't emit so much as a chirp, even on a wet road. There was much more tire than there was power. And so, true nirvana of slow car fast was achieved, working an underpowered, light, well handling car through the turns.
...and I fucking hated it. It was novel at first with this car, giggling as I floored it, feeling like outright abuse. It was that same Beavis and Butthead laugh of doing something you weren't supposed to be. But that feeling soon faded. It felt like a chore. I shouldn't have to work this car so damn hard just to get somewhere. It wasn't fun. Angrily mashing the accelerator, slamming through gears, running a racing line through corners, then you look down and...I'm only doing 25 mph? What the hell? I felt like I accelerated and shifted more than a Fast and Furious chase scene. And even when you're on your A game, giving it everything it's got, Eurobeat thumping in your ear, you're still liable to get your doors blown off by an impatient Camry, or cyclist. Not one of those Tour de France give me all your steroids types either, little Suzy with her streamers on her handlebars and training wheels will blow past you. You briefly contemplate holding your jacket out the window as an impromptu sail. And it's so pitifully underpowered, yes you can push it to the limit [80's music intensifies] but it's so much damn work to get it there. Granted this might be partially due to the suspension set up and more tire than it needs in this case, but everyone talks about how euphoric it is to have a car that just sticks to the road like that. I find it incredibly disappointing. It never feels that wild or dangerous. It's like driving a go-kart at a birthday party, but there's none of the gifts and heat lamp warmed greasy pizza that comes with it.
After all that frustration, I had to jump over to the fast car; the 00 Mustang. Yeah, yeah, yeah...another gutless pig that can't handle, right? Not this one. There's no engine from an economy car known for erupting into a ball of flames. Instead it's a thoroughly built all aluminum DOHC V8, with a screaming roots blower atop it. But that was never enough. That blower is fed by twin Nagasaki noisemakers for a rather tame 15psi in street trim that will be discussed here. That's more than enough for that fast car feel. But don't think that handling hasn't been addressed. This one is even more decked out than the 88, complete with a fully independent rear suspension and a whole lot more tire. This car is the antithesis to the slow car 88. Not only does it boast such a potent powertrain, but it's got a full interior and then some, a true decked out street car, worthy of sailing carrier escort missions with the U.S.S Challenger, tipping the scales above 3800lbs. Though weight distribution has been carefully managed, with lots of components relocated rearward to offset the Shanhai Spoolie-bois up front.
You get in this thing, and it instantly wants to go. Even letting out the clutch is a different experience. With its power and tall gearing it leaps out to 15mph almost instantly. There's no stopping it. It is just pure hate. If the slow car is a Pomeranian, a little angry under just the right circumstances, but ultimately non-threatening because you can yeet it into the next zip code, then this is a Belgian Malnois, straining at the leash, barking, razor sharp teeth gleaming in the moonlight, just begging to be set loose and eviscerate the road ahead. You have to lean back and put your weight into it to hold them back, the leash cutting into your wrist, and they're restrained for now...but just barely. ...or instead of all those flowery words, I could use a language you'd prefer, memes. It's the nice, soft SpongeBob versus the ripped, Rambo SpongeBob one.
Most of the driving is rather pleasant. Driving city streets are fine. In fact you barely need any throttle. It's nice and smooth. There's no lugging it, the power is there all the time. You can putter along nice and easy. It's relaxing. There's no frustration of having to work it hard. Now part of the whole argument is that you never get to use the power of a fast car "slow", or on average streets. But that's a lie. Driving it on the exact same routes as the slow car there are little opportunities here and there. Overtaking cars, on ramps, or just plain getting up to the speed limit from a stop light. And holy hell is it a totally different experience. When you let go of that leash, all hell breaks loose. The power is there across the entire rev range. It's not as violent as a roots blower or big block car. You don't get whiplash, but you get slingshotted to speed. Your knuckles are white as you grab on tight and hold on for dear life. Even if you romp on it barely above idle, already rolling, that red tach needle screams up as the tires spin. Not pizza cutter all seasons like the slow car either; these are 315 drag radials. You don't even really notice them spinning, just the sensation of the back end skating around like an ice rink. You might make it into another gear or two before hitting the speed limit, but with that tall gearing it doesn't take much. And it's so fast. You blink your eyes and you already have to be on the brakes. It's the opposite of the slow car. You're not asking how you're only doing a certain speed, you're shocked that you're already doing a certain speed. How did that happen? You have to slow it down, the engine burbling and crackling as it revels in its evil work, a mechanical maniacal laugh.
Now at this point you're probably taking a sip of your smug-a-cola and thinking "See? That proves my point. Slow car fast is always fun because you can push it hard, and fast car slow is only fun for that split second." After this I'm thoroughly convinced of the inverse. The slow car fast is never fun. It's infuriating. You have to work it hard and you never really get a reward out of it. With the fast car, even if you limited it to 5% throttle, just cruising around nice and slow, it's more enjoyable. Even if you limited it to just one 50% throttle blast up to the speed limit, that second or two is infinitely more enjoyable than a thousand miles of winding roads in a slow car.
I'm prepared for the disagreement. I know I'm in the church of the slow car fast, where Mazda died for our sins, where we live by Jinba Ittai and the altar is adorned by a golden Miata. The trinity of slow car, handling, and manual transmission is symbolized by the holy rotary Dorito, and we make the sign of the manual shifting in an H-pattern as a blessing. But I'm going to be down the road at the church of fast car, with blackjack and hookers. You can spot it by the burning E85 pentagrams.

Alphabets - the Cockney Alphabet, the NATO Alphabet and the new Home Office-Approved Alphabet for the new millenium.  This has been around for some time and thinking of new entries or updating old entries can be quite entertaining. S used to be "S for Williams" (Esther Williams) except that you have to be over 60 to remember who she was. It could have been updated to "S for Rantzen " except that you have to be about 35 to remember her reliably. It is mostly Cockney (A for Horses, L for Leather) except for the Z in this alphabet. This replaced "Z for a light breeze" or, in a similar vein, "Z for Zodiac". A for Horses B for Mutton C for Miles D for Kate E for Brick F for Lump G for Police H for Consent I for Novello J for Nice Time K for Restaurant L for Leather M for Cream N for Lope O for the Wings of a Dove (O for the Rainbow) P for Relief Q for the Loos R for Mo S for you, you can take it in the other room T for Gums U for Me V for Espana W for a Quid, guvnor? X for Breakfast Y for Mistress Zee for Moiles (Somerset version

My dad had a "special alphabet". He was a Liverpudlian/Londoner. The alphabet started:
A for horses (hay for horses)
B for mutton (beef or mutton)
C for (the) islanders (Seaforth Islanders)
D for dumb (deaf or dumb)
E for you or me (either, pronounced eth(f)er)
F for vescent (effervescent)
I can only remember one more and that was
L for leather (hell for leather)
Can any one remember more?

Frank LaCavera and his hour glass collections

Frank LaCavera and his hour glass collections By  PEOPLE STAFF June 05, 1989 12:00 PM Like the sands through the hourglass, so are the days of Frank J. LaCavera’s life. LaCavera, a 70ish retired electrical engineer, lives in Cleveland in a house that is filled with reminders of the temporal — more than 300 one-of-a-kind hourglasses that he has designed and made in the last 32 years. Each is set on a marble base with the hourglass in a wooden frame, and the whole is adorned with whimsical decoration. “I only do this stuff when inspired,” says LaCavera. “It’s like magic.”

Frank LaCavera hourglass Among the inspirations that became hourglasses are: Castle and Dragon, which includes a tiny steel dragon next to a tiny castle, set on a piece of amethyst, all inside a crystal ball; Pluto, with the hourglass perched atop a spaceship; and Ribs, which includes a plastic pig under glass, reclining in a centerfold pose. LaCavera took up his hobby when he was looking for an hourglass to decorate his study and found out that the closest thing he could buy in Cleveland was an egg timer, so he went into business for himself. He had to invent the machinery and instruments, including one to remove static electricity from inside the glass and another to determine the proper size of the hole between the two halves of the hourglass. (His hourglasses are accurate to 14 seconds an hour.) LaCavera has sold only a few hourglasses over the years (they run from $89 to $1,500), but he prefers to hang on to his work, which now fills the modest three-bedroom frame house he shares with wife Phyllis on the city’s west side. Phyllis thinks the world should see more of her husband’s hourglasses. “Work this beautiful,” she says, “should be out there where people can enjoy it.” Hourglass maker Frank LaCavera filling 12 of his hourglass bulbs w. sand as he prepares to time test each piece that he will use in his ornate hourglass creations at his workshop in home. A new law which takes effect Friday repeals the antiquated statute which shut down taverns, bars, and other liquor along with the state's monopoly retail voting hours. All will be open Nov. 2, including the state which in the past have given their employes the entire day off although bars and restaurants usually let the booze flow again an hour after polls closed, as the old law per- mitted. Rep John A Galbraith, R-69 Moumce, sponsored Ihe new law, calling the old one "archaic He said the days are gone when people "voted publicly and sat under the trees passing the jug around. No one tries to buy votes with whisky anymore." Galbraith got little help from his Republican colleagues as his bill squeaked through the Democratic House 55-39 and Senate 17-15 Restaurant and bar owners who claimed the law unfairly penalized their businesses lobbied for him, and may have helped convince Gov. James A. Rhodes who signed the repealer without comment. The 52-year-old Galbraith said despite the lobbying, the bill represented his "personal conviction that the old law was out of date Ohio was the only one of the 10 largest states which continued to have such a prohibition." Rep Alan E Norris, R-27 Westerville, whose hometown claims to be the "birthplace of prohibition" and remains dry. carried the House opposition. He said he felt simply that "people should be sober when they vote." He said it wasn't a moral issue with him, but felt the old law "was good for more than 100 years" and was needed to help protect the integrity of Ohio's election process. Frank LaCavera and his hour glass collections The election day liquor law is among five taking effect this week, 90 days after being signed into law by the governor. Other new laws: take away the authority of county and townships to enact zoning ordi- nances affecting oil and gas operations, per- mit senior citizens to take courses without credit or tuition at state universities when space permits; bring health district subsidies under _0hio Public Health Council regula- tions, and exempt delayed gram contracts held bv farmers from the state intangibles tax on stocks, bonds, and other securities. Carter recalled as pious preacher LOCK HAVEN, Pa "He knocked on doors asking people if they needed Jesus Christ as their per- sonal savior. He never breathed to us he was a politician." Mrs Robert Farwell was reminisc- ing about Jimmy Carter. She remembered him as the evangelist who eight years ago trumpeted Christianity in this central Penn- sylvania town. It was in 1968 that Carter visited the Lock Haven area as a member of a six-man team of Southern Baptist laymen attempting to start a second Baptist church. "He was the most humble and com- passionate man my husband and I ever met." Mrs Farwell, a widow of six months, said recently in a tele- phone interview. "He was a man who really loved the Lord Jesus Christ You could feel it every minute you were around him." The Baptist laymen remained two weeks, working in pairs and visiting 10 to 15 homes a day. Support for a se- cond Baptist parish grew and even- tually a new church was established. For a time the new congregation was led by a divinity student from Texas, but he left. A permanent pastor was never found and the con- gregation dissolved and the new church closed. "He always wore a business suit." recalled Mrs Farwell, who lives in Flemmgton, near Lock Haven. "We knew he was a distinguished person. as the volume of ship- building However, the em- bargo of 1807, caused by the war between Great Bri- tain and Napoleon, ruined the Ohio shipyards for a time. Four years after Robert Fulton invented the steam- boat, the first such craft was seen on the Ohio It was the New Orleans, built at Pittsburgh, which went down river in 1811. It had a speed of only 12 miles an hour, but that was enough to mark the beginning of the end for the flatboat and barge lines which had en- joyed all the trade until that time. The steamboats made travel safer and cheaper as well as faster, thus adding much to Ohio's growth and prosperity. Carolina dams lose to scenery WASHINGTON (AP) After a four-year legislative fight, a bill to save a scenic stretch of the New River in North Carolina from being inundated by power- generating dams is likely to win congressional approval this year. The House passed the bill Tuesday by a 311-73 vote and sent it to the Senate, which approved similar legislation jn the last Congress. President Ford has announced he would sign the bill. Every major environmental group in the country has backed the measure to save the 26.5-mile stretch "It looks like we will finally get it through this said Rep Ken Hechler. D-W.Va one of the long-time supporters of the New River legislation. The measure would bar the two-dam Blue Ridge Pro- ject of the Appalachian Power Co. The Federal Power Commission has approved the project but construction has been delayed by court appeals. Rep. Paul Simon, D-I11, who has taken a boat trip down the river, said it is a wonder of nature that should be preserved for posterity. "If any of you have a chance to take that trip, then I don't think you'll ever vote against this he told his colleagues. "God took 100 million years to create this river. Let's keep a power company from destroying Hechler said. He cited the statement by geologists that the river is the oldest in the Western Hemisphere.

You would think print advertising is void of innovation today, but that is actually not the case.
In fact, many brands are finding new ways to merge the digital and physical world through magazine and newspaper ads.
What Is Print Advertising?
Print advertising is a form of advertising that uses physically printed media to reach potential customers. Print ads were once the standard format for creative advertising. But as more advertising dollars are allocated to digital outlets, print advertising is seen as an expensive, untrackable media format.
To give you a sense of how businesses today are incorporating print advertisements into their digital strategy, we’ve collected 15 print advertisements that’ll make you rethink the word “traditional.”
15 Interactive Print Advertisements That Are Still Innovative Today

Nikola Tesla’s Thoughts On the Soul and the Afterlife
1. Tesla’s reasoning is the reasoning of a practical man of science, who has not only given laboratory tests but deep mental consideration to the question of immortality. There is a deal of the esthetic about Tesla, and as he talks his deep-set eyes seem to be looking into the far distance. Born of a Greek church clergyman, in Smiljan in Serbia, it was intended that the young Tesla follow theology as a profession, but the inventive genius, inherited from his mother, took him into the realm of science. But all his life–he is now 68 years old–he has given deep thought to the question of life after death. He has come to no hasty conclusions, and his remarkable statement might be said to be a brief summarizing of years of thought.
–Nikola Tesla.
“After Death — WHAT?” Lima News, Lima, Ohio, March 14, 1926.
“Scientists Doubt The Human Soul Was Weighed.” New York World, March 17, 1907.
3. “Ah, but there is no soul or spirit. These are merely expressions of the functions of the body. These life functions cease with death and so do soul and spirit.”
“What humanity needs is ideals. Idealism is the force that will free us from material fetters.
–Nikola Tesla
“Tesla Seeks to Send Power to Planets.” New York Times, July 11, 1931.

The Jamboree Season Has New Feeling in New Decade
When the 2019 season came to a close on the jamboree tour, everyone was wondering exactly what Bonnier Corporation had planned as the new decade was nearing.  The season saw many changes over the several months that saw Lima, Bloomsburg, and Indianapolis host events.  Some things looked promising, while others were a struggle.
At the same time, no one could have predicted the unprecedented change that the entire nation faced when the COVID-19 pandemic was officially announced.  What was a great start to an entire monster truck season suddenly came to a sudden halt.  Trucks were in trailers, stadiums were empty, and shows canceled.
As the nation came to grips with a new way of living, even if it was temporary, the wonder of whether the roar and power of the monsters would return kept lingering.
Bonnier Corporation was not going to yield, especially since their season does not begin till mid-June.  At the same time, the company itself has gone under an entire overhaul.  New personnel are in place from the previous season, including a new sanctioning body.  WHR Motorsports oversaw the infield competition for the monsters, tough trucks, and mud bogs.  But, just recently, Bonnier Corporation announced that it would be USAC overseeing the infield action beginning in 2020.  Having experience on dirt and with off-road competition, this is an entire new venture for USAC.
In doing so, they are incorporating some new things for the infield, including new layouts.  The first show alone has a layout that has never been seen at any jamboree.  Along with that, not only will there be the usual mud pit, off-road course for the tough trucks, but now there will also be a mega truck course for teams to run.
The monster truck racing competition will run the same course as the mega trucks, but also has a lot more options in the infield for their freestyle competition.
As always, the hope is to have a tough field of drivers that will not only race one another hard, but fair, and also put on a show for the crowd when it came time to turn loose in freestyle.  Many of these drivers have not even been in their trucks since early March when the show slate across the country came to a halt.  Drivers are eager to get back behind the wheel, not just for the sake of the fans, but also for themselves since they have to knock a little rust off.
The pandemic has made it a rough few months for the country, and having some type of normalcy could be something everyone could use right now.
So who is going to be hitting the track, and tearing up dirt, when the season officially kicks off?  Here is the 2020 lineup for the General Tire Monster Truck Thunder Drags:
Raminator:  Mark Hall 2020 Ram Power Wagon Shows Attending:  All
One of the major staples of these shows has been some HEMI power, and this year is no exception.  Last year, Mat Dishman poured on the power when he put the Raminator body on his chassis and let loose on the field.  In doing so, he appeared in all but two final rounds all season, winning five of those appearances.
It was one of the most dominating seasons of any Ram truck in recent memory, and he did so after declaring that he was stepping aside from the full-time grind of monster truck action.  He left on a positive note, and even comes by the shop to do some vinyl work for the team.
This year, Mark Hall is bringing his chassis to compete against a strong field of competitors, and is doing so with an entire new Ram body.  As has been tradition with the Hall Brothers, when the real-life trucks get an upgrade in looks, the monster version soon follows.  This year, the team trucks are stocked up with the new 2020 design Rams, and being the leader of the pack for the Hall Brothers, Hall’s truck is standing proud with the new 2020 Power Wagon stance.
Whether he can, or will, equal the success of his then-teammate, will be to be determined.  However, the HEMI power will be tough to beat, something many a competitor has discovered over the years.
General Tire:  Kurt Kraehmer 2020 Ram Rebel Shows Attending:  All
Carrying the title sponsor of the Monster Truck Thunder Drags is a challenge for anyone, but to be called upon to do so as a rookie driver adds that much more pressure.
In 2018, that was what Kurt Kraehmer was tabbed to do when he took over as the lead man in the General Tire monster truck.  Although nervous, he felt confident.  Three years later, he’s shown he can handle the responsibility of carrying such an important name, while also promoting a popular brand of tire.  Kraehmer has become a competitor that when one lines up against in racing, they have to be extremely alert as he’s very quick on the lights.
His freestyle performances have gotten stronger as his experience grew, including many opportunities last season that saw him drag the wheelie bar across the gravel and point the nose of the truck to the sky.  Although one of those wheelies resulted in a rollover, one that initially scared Kraehmer’s wife, Davi, but he recovered and came back soon after to perform a full freestyle as if nothing had occurred.
Kraehmer spent the shortened first-quarter schedule with Feld Entertainment, taking home a few skills challenge victories, and that alone showed that in his short time driving, he’s become quite the wheelman.
The General Tire body is going back on his chassis once more this season, and seeing how much he’s progressed will mean this year could be an enormous one for the young driver.
Xtreme Diesel:  Dave Radzierez 2018 Ram Heavy Duty Shows Attending:  All
Hoping to bring a little smoke to the show, this time for more than just one, is what many consider the original “Diesel Dave” in the XDP team with Dave Radzierez.  After spending a couple years running an alcohol engine in his machine, Radzierez made the swap back to a newer designed, common-rail Cummins power plant.
This newer engine yielded less smoke, better throttle response, and actually an opportunity to run indoors.  But, it also proved to be a hard engine on parts…outside of the engine.
The chassis, drive line, and transfer case among others were being broken left and right, and even Radzierez admitted he was taking away power not for performance, but to try and save parts.  It was far too much than even he anticipated.  Entering 2020, it appeared Xtreme Diesel was going to be doing a few performances during the winter tour, but then Radzierez got an opportunity he could not pass up in taking the wheel of Bigfoot #21 on the Toughest Monster Truck Tour.
All the while, he knew his truck was looking to potentially get a major upgrade.  Radzierez was looking to get a new chassis for the new season, one that could handle the power of the new engine, and all the components it takes to make it run.  His current truck has been competing since 2012, and he outright admitted it’s run it’s course.  As to what kind of chassis he’s looking into, he wants a more modern one to handle the abuse he knows he will put it through.
If that becomes a reality, without a doubt, the jamborees will certainly get…Xtreme.
Bad Habit:  Joey Sylvester 1979 Ford F-150 Shows Attending:  All
It’s been a few years since any truck on the jamboree tour has sported a classic style body, as the last was Tim Mente’s Storm Damage that ran a classic Chevrolet square body.  This year, a classic look is coming from one of the newest, and some say most sleek, trucks to come out.
A world-record holder in his own right, it will be the jamboree return of Joe Sylvester in his entirely new Bad Habit Ford “dent side.” The last time Sylvester ran any jamboree event was back in 2007, his second year as a driver, and to say he was a newcomer was an understatement.  But since then, he’s set a world record not once, but twice, before taking a break from the sport on a full-time basis in 2014.
During his time away, Sylvester spent a lot of time running late models and sprint cars in Ohio and western Pennsylvania, before finding his own niche, or nest egg, in a sense when he opened up his coffee shop, High Octane Coffee.  With three locations in eastern Ohio, he is feeling confident in a stable future.  But the itch, and the desire, to be at the wheel never left.
It was 2013 when Sylvester set the world record for the long jump in his prior Bad Habit truck, but this new piece that he debuted last year in Las Vegas is one of the most incredible pieces to come out in recent years.  The classic body with the black, orange, and purple accents stands out among many machines, and every bit of the truck has his own touches, from paint to welding, right down to the smallest details.
Sylvester spent a few weekends already at the wheel of his new machine, but the pandemic brought his winter tour to a halt, and also forced his cafes to go from a dine-in option to strictly drive-thru.  Yet, he is ready to unleash his Ford on his competitors, while also showing the fans that he is quite the barista.
His return to the jamborees will be a lot different than his first experience.  In fact, everyone should be a bit worried.  He has a bad habit, and a heavy right foot.  Could prove key in close races.
Stinger Unleashed:  Zane Rettew 2020 Ford Raptor Custom Shows Attending:  All
It was 2017 when fans last saw a bit of a sting at the jamborees, as Zane Rettew had his then-Stinger 3.0 in attendance.  One year later, that chassis ultimately got a bit of a retirement, when he decided to invest in the parts that he felt would help him compete against the more modern chassis, and more modern competitions.
In the last few years, his field of trucks has expanded from a two-truck operation into a four-truck field of strong equipment.
This year, Rettew invested in an all-new chassis, similar to what Sylvester is running, and has shown to be extremely strong, although not many shows have come for him to compete.  The Stinger chassis he ran in 2018, it is now the one his wife drives (more on that in a bit).  The chassis he ran last season is becoming a new machine, set to debut later this year.  Although he did have to use it as a substitute when he new truck had to go in the engine shop.
The new Stinger Unleashed is the sixth truck in the Stinger lineage, and it looks as though this one is going to last a while.  Rettew is ready to get back to the jamborees after having a strong showing three years ago, this time with an opportunity in equal equipment to his competitors.
Hopefully no one gets stung in the process.
Pretty Wicked:  Lindsey Rettew 1978 Ford Bronco Soft Top Shows Attending:  Bloomsburg, Indianapolis
As mentioned above, Rettew’s team has expanded in vast numbers.  His Stinger 2.0 chassis has become Master of Disaster, one that has been used in a steel wall stunt last year.  The 3.0 chassis has been sold, and Zane’s old chassis is now becoming the new Bearly Tame truck in the stable.
As for the first Stinger Unleashed, that chassis is still running strong.  But now, his “better half” is the one in the seat, with her own identity.
Lindsey Rettew debuted as a driver last winter, and fans even had an opportunity to decide on what her truck was going to be.  The fans decided on a very appropriate name, especially for what was coming, Pretty Wicked.  The truck had to have some pink in it, and the new wrap certainly had some additions.  But, the truck was getting a look all it’s own.
The body went old school, but with a twist.  Although the nose replicates the dent-side Fords made famous in the 70’s, the actual body is instead a soft top Bronco.  The truck was an immediate hit among adults who love classic trucks, and kids who love bright colors.  It’s been seven years since the field of trucks had a female driver, dating back to Michelle Simpson when she drove Chalkboard Chuck.
It is certainly going to make for a “Pretty Wicked” experience this summer.
Samson:  Rick Steffens 2008 Chevrolet Silverado Shows Attending:  Lima
It is not often that a historic name gets to return to a series that in a sense helped make it’s name.  However, for one weekend, that opportunity will take place.
It was 1999 when the Samson name was last at any jamboree, and piloted by now Hall of Fame inductee Dan Patrick.  One year later, the name was not seen at many of the jamboree shows, and by 2001, was not on the lineup list anywhere.  All the while, Patrick campaigned the same truck that he had been running since the mid-90’s, with it’s powerful engine and still utilizing the rear cantilever suspension that he developed back in his time with Bigfoot when he was involved in developing Bigfoot #8.  He ran that chassis through 2008 when he upgraded his own truck to the newer edition PEI chassis at the time.
That truck is still running today, but has seen a couple new shoes at the wheel.  After Patrick retired, his daughter, Allison, took over driving duties for a while.  But as her career took off elsewhere, it was Rick Steffens taking over the ride, and showing that the Samson arms are still as strong as ever.
He showcased that this winter when he ran the Europe Hot Wheels Tour, as Samson for a few months became the Tiger Shark, and showed even with new skin, the truck was just as strong as ever.
For one jamboree, the Samson machine is getting a chance to showcase the strong arms and power is still there, and could be playing spoiler with a historic name.
The only uncertainty with this season is timing, as all three jamborees are in different states, and each state is trying it’s hardest to reopen it’s economy, and activities for all citizens.  The pandemic has shuttered all kinds of entertainment, but the hope remains that all three jamborees will be happening as scheduled.  The sanctioning body has stated they will work to ensure all three events take place.
It’s a new era for the jamboree, with a new layout for the infield competitions, and a new crew to oversee the action.  The time has come to move away from the pandemic, and get ready for some power.
2020 4-Wheel Jamboree Schedule
A&A Auto Stores 4-Wheel Jamboree Summer Nationals:  July 10-12
Bloomsburg Fairgrounds-Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania
O’Reilly Auto Parts 4-Wheel Jamboree Fall Nationals:  September 18-20
Indiana State Fairgrounds-Indianapolis, Indiana
O’Reilly Auto Parts 4-Wheel Jamboree Ohio Nationals:  October 23-25*
Allen County Fairgrounds-Lima, Ohio
*With the state of Ohio under stay-at-home orders through the end of May due to the pandemic, Bonnier Corporation moved the Ohio 4-Wheel Jamboree Nationals from it’s original dates of June 12-14 to late October.  This is the second time in the last 15 years a jamboree has been moved from it’s original dates.  The previous time was the Bloomsburg jamboree in 2006, as it was moved from its normal July weekend to August due to flooding.  All tickets that were sold for the June dates will be honored for the new weekend, and all participant registration will roll over as well.
Fans that are unable to attend the new dates, refunds will be issued.

De Villiers / Von Zitzewitz lose more than 4 hours
The Dakar Rally is known for the twists and turns it dishes up every year, and Stage 3 of the 2019 event delivered its fair share. On the positive side, Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Nasser Al Attiyah and navigator Mathieu Baumel drove a near-perfect stage to post the second-fastest time on the day, and take over the overall lead of the rally.
Al Attiyah / Baumel finished the 331 km-long stage just 03:26 behind winners MINI’s Stephane Peterhansel and navigator David Castera, who completed the dune-laden test in 03:54:31. It was a stunning performance by the Qatari master, and clearly showed the power of the Toyota Hilux in the thick Peruvian sand.
“The stage today was extremely difficult,” said Al Attiyah after reaching the bivouac in the Peruvian town of Arequipa, some 460 km from the finish of the stage. “We crossed many big dunes, and in my experience, this was one of the toughest stages I’ve seen on the Dakar.”
The stage certainly proved to be a tough one for Toyota Gazoo Racing SA’s Giniel de Villiers and navigator Dirk von Zitzewitz. The pair set good times early in the stage, but disaster stuck near the 172 km-mark when they hit a rock (hidden in loose sand). The impact destroyed the sump guard of the Toyota Hilux, and cracked the sump. As a result, they lost all oil pressure, and were forced to stop in order to save the engine.
“We knew that we’d had a big hit,” said De Villiers after finally making it to the bivouac in Arequipa. “So, we kept a close eye on all the systems, and it wasn’t long before we knew we were in trouble. We stopped and tried to affect our own repairs, but in the end, we had to wait for assistance.”
The result was a time loss of four-and-a-half hours, which was bitterly disappointing given the strong start De Villiers / Von Zitzewitz had had during the opening stages. De Villiers Von Zitzewitz wasn’t the only crew to lose time today. Yesterday’s stage winner, Sebastien Loeb and navigator Daniel Elena (Peugeot) were the first car into the stage, and managed only the 11th-fastest time on the day. Last year’s winners, Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz (MINI) lost even more time after damaging the front wheel of their car.
“For now, all we can do is to keep racing,” said De Villiers. “Yes, we’ve lost a ton of time, but the Dakar is never over until it’s over. We’ll keep pushing and supporting our teammates.”
This includes Bernhard ten Brinke and navigator Xavier Panseri, who took to the stage as the third car on the road. Running so close to the front made navigation tricky, costing the Dutchman and his French navigator some time as they got stuck in the same ditch that cost Sainz three hours. Despite this, they had a clean run and set the 7th-fastest time on Stage 3. This represents a time loss of 31:45 to Peterhansel, but at the same time puts them in 7th in the overall standings, just 25:21 off the lead.
“It was a day of mixed results for us,” said Glyn Hall, the Toyota Gazoo Racing SA Team Principal, after the stage. “Of course, we are extremely disappointed with the time that Giniel and Dirk lost, but we are also very pleased with Nasser and Mathieu’s performance. Bernhard and Xavier did a great job today, and are well-placed for tomorrow’s marathon stage.”
The marathon stage is one of the Dakar Rally’s biggest challenges, as crews have to complete the stage – and return via the next stage – without any support from their technical crews. This means that all spares and equipment needed to repair and service the cars need to be taken along on the first part of the Marathon, and only the driver and navigator are allowed to work on their car.
“I usually get grey hair during the marathon stages,” continued Hall. “And I’m sure this year will be no exception. Our Toyota Hilux has a great reputation for reliability, but you can never be certain that all will go well.”
This year’s marathon stages are Stages 4 and 5, which will see the crews race off to the southern Peruvian town of Tacna on Thursday, January 10th, before returning to Arequipa the following day – for a well-deserved day off.
Stage 4 is 351 km in length, and will again comprise mainly sand and dunes, with some rocky river beds in between. Stage 5 will bring the crews back via a 450 km-long stage, and is sure to play a pivotal role in the outcome of the race.
The bivouac at San Juan de Marcona will move southwards to Arequipa for Stage 4. The race will conclude with Stage 10, bringing the crews back to the Peruvian Capital of Lima on January 17th.
