Opened in 1868 as The Theatre Royal, it was initially used as assembly rooms and a library until it was taken over by Yates' Wine Lodge a year later with the ground floor becoming a bar with the upper floors becoming a cinema.
As a theatre it has been known as the Tivoli Picture Theatre and Van Beine's Theatre although most people alive today will refer to it as Yates' Wine Lodge.
It survived until 2009 before the whole building was destroyed by fire, it was then left as an eyesore for all visitors to see until 2018 before work commenced on the new Premier Inn building we have today.

The Muse Euterpe, ca.130/150, white marble, 148x81 cm
Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid Inv. E000037
This marble statue and other seven more were unearthed in about 1500 in Hadrian´s Villa at Tivoli, where the decorated the stage of the Academy Theatre or Odeon. They were made at the end of the reign of Emperor Hadrian (c. 130 AD), by two Roman worshops, reproducing Greek models from the second century BC. In about 1670, they were acquired by Queen Cristina of Sweden (1626-1689) and exhibited in her palace in Rome. They were later acquired by Philip V and reached the Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia) in 1725. (Museo del Prado)

over the last year, my city has lost our 37-year-old flagship indie radio station (KDHX), our 46-year-old progressive independent news publication (riverfront times), our 105-year-old multi-cultural, international community street festival (Festival of Nations), our 100-year-old beloved movie theatre (The Tivoli), and now a community deli that has been in business for 47 years (Mom's Deli). my fucking heart hurts, man. there's not going to be anything left for the community at all at this point.

James Cruden was born 28th December 1915 in Govanhill, Glasgow.
Not a name you will know, but some of you might have known him as Jack Milroy, many more though will be more aware of Jack, as Francie to Rikki Fultons Josie.
As teddy boys Francie and Josie, Fulton and Milroy became comic institutions, igniting their careers, Francie was the naïve and gullible foil to the sardonic Josie (Fulton). Strutting on to the stage dressed in a drab wig and an outrageously tight red “teddy boy” suit, Francie would win laughs before he even opened his mouth. Then, in a heavy Glasgow patois, Francie would react with histrionic horror at Josie’s “carryings-on”.
As a child, he harboured ambitions to become an actor and joined several amateur dramatic societies. During wartime service overseas with the Black Watch, he saw Noel Coward entertain the troops at Chittagong.
On demob in 1947, Milroy got bookings in small theatres, and after being spotted in Carnoustie by a talent scout he was booked for the Tivoli in Aberdeen.
In 1949, he met the singer Mary Lee, who would become his wife in 1953. The two formed a musical and comic double act, performing in Belfast. As a solo act and in pantomime, Milroy packed Scotland’s variety theatres for 50 years. Mary sadly passed away last March at the grand old age of 100.
The double act of Francie and Josie made the transfer from stage to TV – turning them into Still Game’s Jack and Victor of their day. They went on to rub shoulders with everyone who’s anyone in Scotland — Jack also discovered a 16-year-old Janette Anderson — Wee Jimmy Krankie in the making along the way.
Workaholic Jack had a massive heart attack in the mid-1980s. That was followed by another in the late 90s when he needed to have a pacemaker fitted. He gave his last ever performance at the Pavilion in the same year, he passed away on February 1st 2001 of heart disease.
I've chosen an auld Hogmanay clip of Jack and his wife Mary
