Nimona 🤝 Call of the Bone Ships
Depicting a gay couple where one of them literally cut off the other one’s hand/arm bc of conflicting senses of duty, and then never having them properly talk about it later

Me with Joron Twinner, my all time beloved.
if a character means enough to me i will truly never stop thinking about them. i just retire them into a little back room in my brain and periodically bring them out to stare at them under a little light

best books of 2022 countdown: honourable mention #13
The Bone Ship's Wake- R.J. Barker
The earlier books in this series, as I said in all my reviews of them, were very solid fantasy novels. There was a good amount of innovation, blended well with some classic fantasy elements and it was nice to see some fucking diversity for once. This book, however, elevated the whole series. The plot, which had been building up over the course of the trilogy, really came into its own and led to a fucking spectacular ending. The characters developed fully in such a satisfying and interesting way to see. This ending did the whole series justice and then went above and beyond. Also I got properly emotional at the end. The epilogue felt unnecessary though.

I find idioms derived from scripture to be particularly fascinating. They seem to have this extra weight to them. One of my favorites is “out of the mouths of babes” which speaks to the surprise of wisdom coming from unexpected sources.
The phrase’s origin is a particularly funky translation of Psalm 8:2: “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, That thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.”
Such evocative phrasing. It *almost* paints a picture.
Anyway, it’s Thursday.
See you soon.

It's you!
You come from a family of nobility and are the only child. You grew up with doting parents, your mother very nurturing and your father very iron-fisted.
You are the heir to the family fortune and your father's company--a shipping company in charge of transporting imported and exported goods across the water. How boring.
You would rather spend your time learning more about what always served as your backyard--the sea. You grew up hearing tales told by your mother and the house staff that the sea was once filled with giants, but over the years reports and sightings had dwindled significantly.
You always felt drawn to the sea, especially after an encounter you had as a child with two mer pups.

it just really breaks my heart that most of the discourse has to focus on dying children in order to humanize palestinians as if fully grown adult human beings don’t also deserve your attention, empathy, respect, and care

There’s a certain level of like… “I can’t think about failing” that the rebels have to deal with because if they fail, thousands of their people will die, but sometimes they just get hit with it, like when Darius realizes that Hunter, a minor who’s guardian not only knew but planned this, has a real sigil and he’s going to die if they mess up.

me at my bookstore job to the 27th young adult straight edgy fantasy romance to come in this month
#full disclosure in case this blows up somehow because of booktok or something - IT'S NOT JUST BOOKTOK CRITICISM OR HET ROMANCE CRITICISM#this is me getting annoyed about the fact that the genre itself is oversaturated with too many of the same cookie cutter plot#girl in magic land meets guy and they hate each other but they don't really!!! but their love grows over the tides of the kingdom's war.....#<- THIS PLOT RIGHT HERE. I'VE SEEN FIVE SEPARATE AUTHORS DO THIS#and again - to clarify - it is NOT just booktok with this oversaturation issue#regular fiction is oversaturated with WW2/victorian era romance dramas - where the plot is good! but then A GUY SHOWS UP#AND THE WOMAN MUST MAKE A CHOICE..... TO SUPPORT HER CHILD OR LEAVE BEHIND HER OLD LIFE etc etc WE GET IT. FUCK.#and it's not just fiction too!!! the charts are oversaturated with crime novels in general right now#granted - most of them are good and try to be original - however there's just too many in the main chart#i won't list all of them to prevent drama - but in two past 'six new chart topper' deals - four were crime#and they haven't sold well. even bringing in popular authors didn't help them sell well#there needs to be a shake up. i don't want to be elitish or snobbish - PEOPLE CAN 100% WRITE WHAT THEY WANT#everyone's art is unique and beautiful because they did it#and they have the freedom to do so#but writers nowadays are falling too much into keeping with trends that it's actively tiring out consistent readers#write your fantasy novel - but lean into the worldbuilding. write your world war novel - but elaborate outside the characters.#write your fiction or crime - but try to vary up the beats of the plot to surprise readers more#stop trying to cater to what you l they want and what works - try and surprise them with something new and unexpected.#anyways rant over. i can talk about this for ages but i won't. but i could#spark talks about nothing of relevance#clip from the shadow the hedgehog rtfd 👍 thank you devil. from bible.

Prompt: writing well-wished to one another f.t. Childe Shoutout to: @chaoffee!!
Tumblr media
Wood crackles in the background and a warm orange hue from the flames in the fireplace illuminates the room in a welcoming way. Outside, snow dances from the clouds down to the ground where they land in a sea of white. And while it had been lively in the living room only a few hours ago, everyone has gone to sleep and you’re alone with the letter in front of you.
Your boyfriend, Childe, was as complex as you expect him to be. A young harbinger with a soft spot for family and his lover. His personality had many layers, and so did his life. That much was evident, because while he was away in Inazuma—carrying out a mission in her Tsaritsa’s name, he still took the time to send you and his siblings heartfelt letters.
The corners of your lips curl up into an adoring smile at the thought of it. Even oceans away, his love for you and his family was like the irresistible pull of a tide. Nothing could ever stop him.
And now you sit in the empty living room of his childhood home, reading the words on the paper over and over again.
He writes about the things he has seen, promises to return with many gifts to make up for the lost time, and ends the letter with well wishes. The majority of it is a variation of ‘I miss you; I love you; you know that I love you, right?’ and you can only imagine how clingy he’d be when he returns (not that you mind. You miss his hugs after being separated from him for months).
You pick up your writing utensil and your own paper. While Snezhnaya remains unchanging, ever so white, and his family close as ever. You still write about the daily habits of it all. Never missing your own well-wishes at the end, and sending off the letter with a kiss.
