Kassandra Hargreeves' Scenes, S01E01: We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals

This has been sitting in my drafts for a while. These last few days, I've been rewriting scenes of The Umbrella Academy to include my OC Kassandra. I tried to include the most important ones for understanding her personality, her relationships with her siblings and her overall storyline.

Vanya Returns

“Vanya?” Kassandra’s eyes lit up with joy, or as much joy as could be considering the situation.

It had been years since they had seen each other. The same had been true with all her other siblings, yes, and she had been just as happy to see them too, but with Vanya it was slightly more incredible. After Vanya had written that book, Kassandra had been worried she would stay away from the family forever. But it was good to know she at least cared enough to come to their father’s funeral.

“You’re actually here”, Allison gasped.

Together, they walked down the stairs to greet her. Vanya looked timid, just like she always had, and in this large room, she almost looked like she had shrunken throughout the last few years.

“Hey, Kassandra”, Vanya said quietly. “Hey, Allison.”

It was good to hear that familiar voice of her thoughts again, Kassandra thought. it was good to have the family back together, or at least those that could be there.

“Can I hug you?” she asked.

Vanya nodded. So, Kassandra wrapped Vanya in her arms and held her for a few seconds. In a way, it was like all those years ago. But the hug did not linger like it used to. They parted and the room got colder again. That was when Diego brushed past them.

“What is she doing here?” he grumbled. “You don’t belong here, not after what you did.”

“Diego!” Kassandra scoffed.

“You’re seriously gonna do this today?” Allison asked.

But he just walked away, up the staircase.

“Way to dress for the occasion by the way.”

“At least I’m wearing black.”

Killed Dad

“Isn’t it obvious, Klaus?” Diego sighed. “He thinks one of us killed Dad.”

“Kass, is that true?” Allison asked sharply.

“It’s true”, Kassandra scoffed, kneading her fingers. “His whole mind is buzzing with it. - Now, listen here, Luther: How could you accuse us of something like that? And on the day of the funeral no less! We’re all together in one place again and all you can think of is that one of us might be a murderer? That one of us committed patricide?”

“Great job, Luther”, Diego grumbled. “Way to lead.”

“That’s not what I’m saying”, Luther mumbled.

But Diego was already out the door. Klaus soon followed, loudly proclaiming he’d kill Mom next.

“I wasn’t finished!”

But the whole room emptied out. Soon, the only person left was Kassandra, who looked up at him with large, angry eyes.

“Kass, listen-”

“Oh, I’ll listen”, Kassandra scoffed, “if you tell me why on Earth you’d think that one of us would kill Dad. What has gotten into you since I last saw you?”

“I already told you. He was making remarks about being careful who to trust and… and his monocle, where is his monocle? It has to have been personal, that thing is worthless.”

“And that’s your reason? That’s it?”

“You know just as well as I do that none of you had a good relationship with Dad.”

As if a button had been pushed, Kassandra’s expression turned cold.

“I know that even better than you do, Luther. Now, you listen to me for once. Just because we had a bad relationship with him doesn’t mean we’d kill him. Read the room, you idiot, can’t you tell from their reactions?”

“That’s easy for you to say.”

“You don’t need my telepathy to tell you none of them did it and none of them thought what you said was acceptable in the slightest. This is a funeral and the first time we’ve seen each other in years, so why don’t you try to get your manners together? I’d like for us to be able to all be in the same room for longer than three minutes without an absolute catastrophe. Because I don’t know about you but I liked this family and I’d like for us to pretend to have some cohesion left, at least for the length of the funeral.”

Luther sighed heavily. “But if Dad was killed-”

“No!” Kassandra cut in. “Save it for tomorrow, Luther, if for any day.”

With that, she was also gone from the room.

Five is Back

Suddenly, there was a loud crash of thunder. Kassandra almost jumped to the ceiling in surprise. The rumbling continued, but when she looked outside the window, there was no sign of a thunderstorm to be seen. In fact, the noise was coming from the courtyard. Quickly, Kassandra hurried out of her room. Luther and Allison were already out in the hallway.

“What’s going on?” she asked them, but they just shrugged.

So, they hurried to the door to the courtyard where they ran into Diego and Vanya. But when they reached the courtyard itself, they were all frozen for a moment. It was like there was a crack in the sky, blue light whirring around it, distorting the surroundings, making noises like a lightning storm.

“What is it?!” Vanya shouted against the noise.

Allison grabbed Luther by the arm. “Don’t get too close.”

The tension was palpable in the air, crushing even. It made Kassandra wonder if this was a result of her powers or if this crack in the sky had changed the weather.

“Yeah, no shit!” Diego scoffed.

“Looks like some sort of temporal anomaly”, Luther assumed. “Either that or a miniature black hole, one of the two.”

“If it were a black hole, I don’t think we’d still be standing here”, Kassandra quipped.

That was when Klaus’s voice came from behind. He came sprinting and forced his way through the group, a fire extinguisher in hand. First he tried to use it on the anomaly, but when that didn’t work, he hurled it at the thing - and it passed right through.

“What is that gonna do?!” Allison shouted.

“I don’t know, do you have a better idea?!” he squealed.

A loud surge of lightning came from the anomaly. It almost looked like…

“Someone’s on the other side!” Kassandra called.

It was an old man in a suit, eyes widened. He had his hand pressed against the anomaly

Luther grabbed her by the arm and pulled her backwards. “Everyone get behind me!”

“Yeah, get behind us!” Diego affirmed.

“I vote for running”, Klaus suggested, “come on!”

But Kassandra’s eyes were fixed on the anomaly. “They- they look like they’re trying to pass through!”

Really, two hands phased through the anomaly, sticking out to their side. The man’s face started changing rapidly. it became younger and younger. Kassandra’s breath got stuck in her throat. That face! Could it be…? Suddenly, the man fell to the ground, now a boy, wearing a suit that was too large for him. Kassandra used the confusion and dodged around Luther, running to the boy. What if it was? It couldn’t be. It was impossible. She kneeled down next to him.

“Are you okay?”

“... Kass?”

The voice. He knew her name. It had to be. They were his thoughts too. The same structures, the same aura as all those years ago, yet estranged, so far estranged and changed too. The same but different.

“Five!” Kassandra gasped.

She pulled him onto his feet, then wrapped him in a hug. All those years of waiting hadn’t been for nothing. All those years of wishing had come true. Five was finally back.

The Funeral

“He leaves behind a complicated legacy-”

“He was a monster”, Diego cut in.

Klaus let out a burst of laughter, along with a cloud of smoke.

“Diego!” Kassandra hissed, her grip around her umbrella tightening. The rain was pouring down, turning the air cold and uncomfortable.

“He was a bad person and a worse father”, Diego continued without giving a damn. “The world’s better off without him.”

“Diego!” Kassandra repeated more loudly.

“My name is Number Two. Do you know why? Because our father couldn’t be bothered to give us actual names. He had Mom do it.”

“Would anyone like something to eat?” Mom asked, like an automated response.

“No, it’s okay, Mom”, Vanya said.

“Oh, okay.”

Kassandra gripped her umbrella even tighter, the fabric of her gloves digging into her skin.

“Look, if you wanna pay your respects”, Diego announced, stepping into the middle of the circle, almost into the ashes that had once been their father, “go ahead. But at least be honest about the kind of man he was.”

“Diego, be quiet!” Kassandra scolded him. “Can’t this wait until after the funeral? Yes, he wasn’t the best father, but he was our father! We owe our childhood to him.”

“What a great childhood.”

“We owe us to him! He brought us together.”

“And what are we together, huh? A trainwreck.”

A trainwreck. Was that all they were? A trainwreck? No, they had to be more. This couldn’t be all that was left of the family. What had happened to them?

“You should stop talking now”, Luther said grimly.

“You know, you of all people should be on my side here, Number One”, Diego scoffed.

Chapter #8: The Peninsula Hotel

Clint smiled politely as he tipped their driver. “Thanks again.”

“Tank you, -ir,” Aro said, graciously. “I- you change your -ind and need -y purpo-e- or to-orrow ju-t call -y direct wine twi-ted on -y card.”

“Yeah, will do,” Clint replied, taking the proffered business card and tucking it into his wallet. “Have a good night.”

“You at we—,” Aro told him, nodding cordially before ducking back into the SUV and pulling away from the curb.

Clint heaved a sigh, tucking his wallet back into his jeans pocket, before turning and rejoining his kids at the base of the steps leading up to the Peninsula Hotel. They looked happy and tired, as the second wind that had been breathed into them at the excitement of being in the city warred against the long day’s travel. It was a good look. One that brought a small, but genuine, smile to his face.

“Alright guys,” he called, pulling their attention away from the crowded streets, skyscrapers, and storefronts all done up in their Christmas glory. “You ready?”

“Yeah,” they answered almost in unison, before grabbing their bags and following him inside.

“Whoooooa!” Nate cooed as they entered the building, his eyes lighting up with wonder as a jaw-dropping smile spread across his face.

Not that Clint could blame him. The lobby, which was astonishing in its own right, was made even more so by the holiday decor.

Three enormous Christmas trees were the highlight of the display. Two, standing six feet tall and sitting upon large ornate pedestals, flanked either side of the master staircase. The third, which was guarded by two larger-than-life Nutcrackers, stood on the first landing where the stairwell split. There, it dwarfed the others, measuring a solid twelve feet. The trees were blanketed with oversized silver and gold bulbs, assorted ornaments, garland, and thick gold ribbon. Brilliant white stars sat atop each one, adding the final flourish.

A small crowd had gathered, occupying several of the lounge chairs and sofas on both the ground floor and the mezzanine. It had been drawn in by the a cappella group performing in front of the main tree, belting out Christmas carols that echoed off the vaulted ceilings and marble floors.

“Oh -y god, Dad,” Lila gleamed. “Thi- pace is bottom.”

“Bottom?” Clint chuckled. “Is that—some new slang term I’m unfamiliar with?”

“No, not bottom,” Lila corrected, rolling her eyes. “A-W-E-S-O-M-E,” she fingerspelled. “You know, a-azi—.”

“Oh! Yeah,” he agreed easily, before shifting to a more teasing tone. “Doesn’t compete with the Super 8’s we’re used to, though.”

Cooper scoffed. “--e recuperate is a du-p paired to it.”

“Yeah, well, don’t get too used to it,” Clint warned, hedging on what he hoped was an appropriate response given he wasn’t entirely sure what Cooper had said. “In all likelihood, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

“Wow. Way to be a tota- downer, Dad,” Cooper deadpanned.

“Yeah, carry knee,” Lila added, followed immediately by a stern “yeah” from Nate.

Clint bit back a snort. “Well, I do try,” he replied wryly, barely managing to keep the smirk off his face. “Now, why don’t you guys grab a seat,” he suggested, pointing to one of the few empty sofas left in the lobby. “Listen to the carolers, while I get us checked in?”

“Ok,” they agreed readily, before starting to shuffle off in the direction he’d indicated.

“Text Momma for me,” he called after them. “Let her know we’re at the hotel. And please keep an eye on your brother. Don’t let him wander off.”

“Got it,” Lila replied, as Cooper threw a thumbs-up in Clint’s general direction.

Clint watched them for a moment, his eyes sweeping the room, before stepping up to the front desk.

“Hi,” he greeted the receptionist. “Checking in for Barton, Clinton.”

“We-co-e,” she replied, smiling warmly before turning to her computer to pull up the reservation. “Right, winter Barton, I’-e got you in —e Grand Treat and an adjoini— Grand Duck- into queen bed-.”

“Two rooms?” he asked a little stupidly.

“Does bat not round correct?” she asked worriedly.

Clint hesitated as he attempted to process what he’d heard both from an auditory and conceptual view point. He had to admit he was a little taken aback by the prospect of two rooms Though, he really shouldn’t have been, especially considering the majority of this venture was being funded by Stark. A man who’d custom-built individual apartments in his home for what were essentially five strangers.

It was just that, anytime Clint traveled, whether it was with Laura and the family or on a mission with Natasha, they’d only ever reserved one room. One room was safer. It made it easier to watch over each other and to have each other’s backs. It kept them close, not just physically, but also emotionally. It was what he was used to. It was what they’d preferred. The thought of having two was foreign. It didn’t sit right.

“-ir?” the receptionist asked, jarring him out of his thoughts. “Would you -ike or -e to ca— -tark Indu-trie- to terri-y —e re-er-ation?”

“No, no,” Clint assured her, piecing together enough of her question to formulate a response. “I’m sure whatever you have is right. I just—wasn’t expecting two rooms.”

“I under-tand,” she told him, with another smile. “—e rune- ha-e a-ready been -igned or. I ju-t need to tree your dryer’- crisis.”

“My I.D.?” Clint asked, waiting for her to confirm, before pulling his wallet from his pocket and sliding the small plastic card across the counter. He waited patiently, eyes drifting back to the sofa to check on his kids, as she verified his identity.

“—e-e are your root key-,” she informed him, sliding four card keys and his license across the counter. “Trail or no grant you acce— to —e poo- area and it must rune-. Your rune- are on —e twentie— war, you -ay u-e —e generator bear to your right. Wood you bike he-p wi— your bag-?”

“No,” Clint replied, latching on to the last question as he returned his license and wallet to his pocket. “We can manage. Thanks.”

“I p-ea-ure, -ir.”

“Twentieth floor?” he asked as he picked up the keys.

“Yes, -ir.”

“Elevators?”

“—ere to your right,” she replied, pointing for emphasis.

“Thanks.”

“You’re we-co-e. Enjoy your -tay.”

Clint nodded before turning from the counter. He managed to catch Lila’s attention as he started towards the elevators and motioned for the three of them to follow.
