I fucking love the Protomen. Act 2 always gets a lot of love, but I love Act 1 so much.
There is so much heat and anger and anguish and desperation and struggle in Act 1 and I just fucking melt into it.
I could loop The Stand (Man or Machine) forever.

Keep Quiet (The Protomen)
They say: (This city)/This city (She's been dead)/She's been dead for years now (For years now)/For years now (For years now)/So death is (So death is)/Not something (Not something )/Not something that scares me (That scares me)/That scares me
"Joe, the protagonist of act 2, has grown up under the oppressive regime of Dr. Wily. He's grown up under the false prosperity, under the implicit threat of robot violence. After over a decade of that, he decides to do something about it, driving off into the night, luring the robot that tracks dissenters after him. He ends up facing it in an alley, staring down the specter of death that's haunted him his entire life. This song is that moment. And then he manages to 'kill' the machine, and realizes that it's not the end. There will surely be more, and even if he's free for now, everyone else he's ever known is not. The final robotic chorus is enforcing that oppressive regime's hold, foreshadowing the struggle and loss ahead."
Good Kid (The Lightning Thief)
And no friends,/And no hope,/And no mom!/... She's taken away.
"When I went through my musical phase, this song lived in my mind rent free. The short silence after Percy yells "And no mom!", Just. AMAZING angst potential for any animatics"
Poll Runner: I never read Percy Jackson or anything, but the musical is FIRE. This song is especially sad, Percy just found his place, and feels like he's about to lose it all over again, which reminds him of all he's lost, and how he feels like a screw up for being kicked out of so many schools, his breakdown culminating in his grief over the loss of his mother. And yes, it's absolutely perfect for projecting onto OCs

Thinking fondly about how one of my first attempts at writing for other people was a review of The Protomen's Act 2 for my school paper in 12th grade.
Can't wait to see my kid do the same for Act 3 in ten years! 🥰

so about those OCs 👀 let’s hear it
AAAAAAA I LOVE YOU THANK YOU
okay so the three I have been thinking about most often recently are Aluna, Shannon, and Mateo. The three of them are a little (cyborg) Found Family living in a cyberpunk-esque dystopian city-state.
Aluna (24, she/her) is the sunshine of the group. She sees the best in others to the point of naivety, is the most curious and courageous, and she has a strong sense of justice. Aluna becomes the leader of the resistance group against the android military force keeping the city-state's dictator in power. She takes an older sister/mentor role with Mateo.
Shannon (27, she/her) is the black cat of the group. She is cool, independent, and often holds people at arms length. She was the first act of resistance against the city-state's leader, beaten close to death by the robot army, and then manipulated by the leader to command the army when nobody stood beside her. Aluna is the one who helps her realize she does not have to stand by the leader's side, and helps the new resistance group. She is fiercely protective of Aluna and Mateo, and takes on a more caretaking role with Mateo.
Mateo (16, he/him) is loud, competitive, and can come across as abrasive and cocky to hide his insecurities. He is quick to anger, but quick to forgive those he loves. He is the most recent cyborg, being groomed by the dictator to take Shannon's place as his commander. He first met Aluna and Shannon by fighting them, but he has a change of heart after capturing them. He sets them free and runs away with them, switching sides.
This plotline is heavily inspired by Act 1 and Act 2 by the Protomen, which I highly recommend listening to if you like 80s inspired rock operas.

Not sure if you'd like my taste in music, but on the off chance you find something you like, here's some songs for the reboot, both for the lads and just the general vibe of Limbo City:
-The Protomen (the band). A couple of their albums, namely "The Protomen", "Act II: The Father of Death", and "This City Made Us".
Songs I liked specifically:
1. "The Hounds" from the Act II album. I know for the reboot it'd probably fit best for Bob Barbas, since he's the big information demon, but personally, I always liked it as Vergil's villain song instead- if he ever came back and decided to just wreck Dante's life after the events of the game, I mean. It's got a nice personal element to it that Dante and Bob just don't have, but Vergil and Dante do/could. That and it's catchy as hell and if Vergil ever decides to try and set himself up as the new demon king of the human world, my dude deserves a good villain song for it.
"There is a flame that I've been fanning
There is a fire waiting to catch
There is a hell that has been building from the moment we first met
If there ever was a time
If there ever was a chance
To undo the things I've done
And wash these bloodstains from my hands
It has passed and been forgotten
These are the paths that we must take
Cause you and I, Tom, we are men
And we can bend and we can break
If you think that you can run
If you think that you can stand
Well, you forget who turned this city on
You forget who plugged this city in!"
2. "Keep Quiet" (Act II), "Light Up the Night" (Act II), and "Hold Back the Night" (This City Made Us album) for Kat and Dante and the Order. The first two are more hopeful, the last one not so much, but it could fit, depending on what you want to write. Gonna throw in "This City Made Us" song from the album of the same name, too, just for the general vibe of Limbo City under Mundus. And maybe even after him, tbh, again, depending on how you wanna do things.
3. "II B: Unrest in the House of Light", "III: the Will of One", "IV: Vengeance" from "The Protomen" album, for general Sparda family drama vibes, specifically their beef with Mundus and, eventually, each other.
Songs for reboot Dante specifically:
-"Lost Boys" by the 69 Eyes. It fits better with the Lost Boys (1987) movie, but fuck it. I like the general Goth rock vibe for Dante. Mostly because of that costume of his that looks like it's inspired by Eric Draven from The Crow (1994), because I love that movie and that costume (it looks good on him!), so he can have this, as a treat.
-"Remedy" by Cold.
-"T-Rex" by K.Flay.
-"You're Not Alone" by Kissin' Dynamite.
-"Dead Inside" by Younger Hunger.
Oh I'm a big fan of music! Incase you are interested, here's some links to my Way Too Many DmC Playlists (also here's my main playlist tag) This is a compilation of what I call my 'essentials' playlists for the reboot trio, they're sort of a sampler platter for their larger playlists. And this is a compilation of all of my playlists for the Reboot Trio (I'm almost done with a set of playlists for a general DmC Reboot Vibe as well)
Anywho carrying on, I haven't heard any of these before so I'll need to check these out more in depth! On cursory listen I'm liking these so far! I also support more villian songs for Vergil (my favorite for him is Flickers by Son Lux )
I also love the Dante/Crow parallels, it's a little detail I love in the costumes but also just kinda like Dantes whole vibe.
My personal all time favorite song for Dante is Sleep Patterns by Merchant Ships which I realize is an odd choice (it doesn't even really sound like most of my Dante playlists or even the rest of Merchant Ships discography) but something about it is very quintessentially reboot Dante to me

the protomen: european tour part 2
hope rides alone
Tumblr media
It is the year 2023. Robots still control the airwaves, keeping the cogs in the slowly corroded propaganda machine forever turning. People live in fear and poverty as the obvious tory-dictatorship further beats the lower class down.
from out of the mists of industry, they appear.
This isn’t just commentary on the current state of the UK…
But once again, they are your hope. They are your salvation.. THEY ARE:
Tumblr media
THE MOTHERFRACKIN PROTOMEN!
after having the concert postponed for a year due to covid. the protomen returned to these shores with one goal in mind: to bring the thunder!. Sadly, K.I.L.RO.Y. was nowhere to be seen this time round. however, his presences was felt, just the same. instructing us to once again fight with them! opening strong with three tracks off the yet-to-be-released ACT3, the band knew what they were doing. whilst it was the same old show musically, they felt more cohesive this time round, despite sir dr robert bakker's absence. we have J Rock Harding Jr. to thank for stepping in.. i think? I could be wrong. starting with "hold back the night" the band reminded us we wouldnt fight alone. carrying a strong message that heightened the feelings of the french at the gig in paris 8 days before. in a sense, the band could have been the spark to to set paris ablaze. following on, with my personal favourite, they performed no way back. a fantastic track that i personally think should've been saved for at least halfway through the set. the set soon took a turn with a new cover: Shadows of the night by pat benatar... brilliantly performed despite the crowd not knowing it fully. I think this is due to pat not being a big thing in the uk during the 80s.
Tumblr media
finally, upon hearing the usual suspects of breaking out, keep quiet, and light up the night, we all prepared ourselves for the fall. the crowd roared. then, came that fierce, powerful reminder that hope rides alone. the big reveal: the encore- they played a new track: THE FIGHT!. There has been alot of speculation about the events that happen in act 3, no-one really knows for sure if its the final album or if there is more to come. i hope so. the fight is some of the best song writing the band has done since no way back and keep quiet. so im going to wait until further info has been dropped to say anymore. for now, they are going to end it, the way they've always ended it- Due vendetta. i dont know when the band will grace theses shores again... but when they do. I will be there.
