413: Marlene Rosenberg on jazz education and the changing gig scene
It was great to chat with Marlene Rosenberg for the podcast! Marlene is a Chicago-based jazz bassist and educator and is one of the most active players in the local scene.
More About Marlene:
Marlene Rosenberg has emerged as one of the most talented and multi-faceted bass players on the scene today. She has played professionally throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America and Japan, performing with innumerable jazz luminaries, such as Kenny Barron, Frank Foster, Stan Getz, Albert “Tootie” Health, Joe Henderson, Marian McPartland, Cedar Walton,Wallace Roney, David “Fathead” Newman, Monty Alexander, Kevin Mahogony, Frank Morgan Frank Wess, Joe Williams and Nancy Wilson, to name a few. Her stylistic range encompasses everything from traditional Big Band to intimate experimental ensembles.
Rosenberg was featured on the recording of the Ed Thigpen Quartet entitled “Easy Flight.” Thigpen believes, “What makes Marlene special is her strength and depth of understanding of music. In a world of clones, she has managed to emerge as her own person with her own sound and feel… her time feel is steady and swings like mad.”
Rosenberg, who grew up in Illinois, began clarinet studies at the age of ten and took up the electric bass in high school, playing in the jazz band. She began acoustic bass in college at the University of Illinois, where she received the Smith Memorial Women’s Scholarship in 1977, and the University of Illinois Bass-Violas Scholarship two years in a row. Well versed in both the classical and jazz aspects of her instrument, she performed with the University’s main symphony orchestra as well as the prestigious U of Jazz Band, the top of six bands in University of Illinois, and a Masters of Music in Jazz Pedagogy from North western University in June of 1999.
In 1985, Rosenberg received an National Endownment of The Arts Jazz fellowship grant, which she used for intensive private study with Ron Carter, Hal Galper, Milk Richmond and Jim Mcneeley. In Addition to her versatility as a bassist, Rosenberg has developed a keen interest and capability in the performance of ethnic music. She has performed and recorded with the Balkan Rhythm Band, which focuses on traditional music from Yugoslavia, Serbia and Greece. Her enthusiasm for the drumming and dance of West Africa has promoted study with master drummers from Ghana as well as participation in an African drumming group in Chicago.
Rosenberg has worked with numerous modern dance troupes, improvising on both bass and percussion. All this experience have added an extra dimension to Rosenberg’s Jazz work giving it a rare depth and range.

Paul David Wilson
Paul David Wilson (born August 30, 1952) is a songwriter, composer, conductor, and music producer. Most of his professional life has been devoted to music, including composing for radio and TV commercials. He became the president of a start-up record label begun by Frank Thomas, who was then the starring player on the Chicago White Sox baseball team. Wilson suffered a massive and debilitating stroke when he was 46 years old. Due to the terribly limiting effects of aphasia, a common but complicated and severe post-stroke condition, he was for a number of years unable to communicate without great difficulty. His fight back to full functioning has been a decade-long challenge that, although largely successful, in many ways still continues.
Biography
Early life
Paul David Wilson was born in Chicago, Illinois. He was third son to father, Herbert, a classical tenor vocalist and choir director who taught elementary school and retired after becoming a vice-principal of the school. Paul’s mother, Odessa, was a child prodigy who grew to become a concert pianist and choir director. She was accomplished in a variety of music genres, but due to her commitment to God, only performed certain styles of music. Paul’s early lessons on piano came from his mother, and he grew up absorbing the classical and gospel music of the choirs and vocal ensembles his parents directed.
While still of pre-school age, Paul began composing simple songs and by the time he began primary school had learned to musically notate the songs he composed. At age 12, Paul began organizing "street corner" vocal ensembles to perform his songs at parties and selected school functions. At 13, he discovered the flute and it soon became his major instrument. Paul attended James H. Bowen High School in Chicago. In Paul’s fourth year of high school, a friend, Arlene Johnson, persuaded him to run for class president. He was elected Senior Class President of Bowen in 1970.
He remembers the day when he was a still-young teenager and "my mother dragged me to a seminar on how to create commercial jingles." The presenters were Dick Marx, whose young son would later become a pop music star known as Richard Marx, who was then Chicago’s most prominent master of music for Radio and TV commercials, and Dr. Thomas Fabish, the concert master of DePaul University’s music department. The presentation involved a big band, top-notch singers and a film. Even as he listened, Paul was thinking, "I could do that."
Inspired by Primous Fountain III, a young composer at DePaul University, Paul enrolled and majored in music composition and theory. He studied music composition with Dr. Leon Stein, Dr. Phil Winsor and Darlene Cowles, while taking flute with Philip Seeburg and Joseph Kainz. In 1973, he was one of 20 music students from around the U.S. selected by Ron Logan of Walt Disney Entertainment to participate in a professional "work experience." Paul remembers it as one of the major highlights of his college career. He wrote at that time in August 1973:
During his study at DePaul, he founded, performed in, and composed for many ensembles and often organized concerts and productions that featured works by him and others. In his senior year, Paul was honored by inclusion in "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges" and graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in music composition and theory.
Career
In May 1974, while a senior at DePaul, he landed part-time employment at "Star Point 7," a music production company founded by Chuck Colbert, a producer/musician with a jazz-rock band, American Breed ("Bend Me, Shape Me"). Paul started this "job" as an unpaid go-fer, answering phones and doing basic clerical chores. After two months, Paul was eager for a chance to show what he could contribute and saw the situation as an opportunity. "Chuck and his writing partner had parted ways and he needed someone to help finish a project. I was around and available and had the skills. I had to ask him, what are you waiting for?" Once Paul had called attention to his talents, Colbert began using him as a composer and arranger.
A short time later, in the Summer of 1974, Paul met a young musician who was just completing his military service, Danny Leake. At the time, Danny was a talented songwriter and electric guitar player, but would later become one of America’s foremost recording studio engineers and one of Paul’s closest and most frequent collaborators.
In the Fall of 1975, Danny played a significant role in Paul’s life by introducing him to Ian Levine, a producer and songwriter, who was a celebrated member of the European black music fan base known as the Northern Soul scene. In 1975, while working with Ian, Paul composed, arranged and produced for Dance, R&B and Northern Soul recording artists, in the course of which he traveled in the U.S. and England. One of the Levine’s artists, Evelyn Thomas, scored a chart hit with her first single, reaching the UK Top 30 in 1976 with the single "Weak Spot," and "which was (co-written and) arrangement by Paul." As the writer, Neil Rushton, wrote in a review which appeared in Black Echoes, "Paul put the incredible zinging, scurrying strings in "Your Magic Put A Spell In Me" performed by [L.J Johnson Ian Levine] for Ian Levine productions and also served as the songwriter and arranger for the "1976 Disco classic, originally sung by James Wells, called "Baby I'm Still The Same Man."
Despite the success and trans-Atlantic travel he was experiencing, Paul still lived at home with his mother and father. One day in early 1976, while diligently making "cold calls" from his parents’ basement in hopes of drumming up some fresh music opportunities, Paul found himself talking to Jerry Butler, a fellow Chicagoan who was already well known in American soul music. Butler had (with Curtis Mayfield) been one of the original founding members of The Impressions and then established a long later career as a celebrated solo artist. That lucky phone call not only gave Paul a chance to meet Butler, but soon led to the opportunity to work with him on a few projects, including three albums "Suite For The Single Girl", "It All Comes Out In My Song" (title song) and Thelma (Houston) & Jerry for the Motown label. Subsequently, Paul and Butler they produce an album on Dee Dee Sharp-Gample with Philadelphia International. Billboard said, "writer/co-producer Paul Wilson’s "Invitation" is a regal, touching trumph that alone would have made for worthwhile album." In 1981 with "Breaking and Entering" / "Easy Money," from Sharp-Gamble's album "Dee Dee", Paul’s production spent four weeks at number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart and Dance Chart Billboard.
Burrell Communications Group, LLC
After two years of working with Chuck Colbert and learning the myriad business-related details one must to be successful in commercial music production, in 1976, at age 24, Paul founded Herschel Commercial, Inc ("I just named it Hershel Commercial, Inc. because it rhymed, he notes) with Maurice Earl, Arlene Johnson and, later, Bruce Montgomery. His first client was Chicago-based Burrell Communications Group, LLC, founded by Tom Burrell. Although Anna Morris, the creative director of Burrell, thought Paul might benefit from a little more "seasoning" before going out on his own, he proclaimed with great certainty, "Look, I’m ready!" Now, as impressed with his confidence as with his talents, Morris awarded him a package of several arranging spots to produce for Coca-Cola. The tracks featured Kitty Heywood, a sweet-voiced soul singer who had already performed on a number of albums as well as commercials. Once produced, the spots were enthusiastically received, both at the ad agency and at the client. Paul was soon creating and producing a long list of memorable and award-winning spots for Burrell and many other ad agencies, often working with such established artists as: Phyllis Hyman, Lena Horne, Anita Baker, Midnight Star, Walter Jackson, The Dells, Peabo Bryson, Ada Dyer Vickie Winans, Tramaine Hawkins, The Bar-Kays, Valerie Simpson, Joshie Jo Armstead, Millie Jackson and Rufus Thomas.
Also of note is the score Paul composed for a television film "Happy Birthday, Martin" sung by Joshie Jo Armstead, which is on permanent display at the King Center in Atlanta.
Leo Burnett Worldwide
In 1977, a chance meeting at a barbershop brought Paul to the attention of Don Richards, a young vice-president and account executive at Leo Burnett Worldwide, Chicago’s largest and most celebrated advertising agency. Richards had been hired to facilitate Burnett’s efforts to identify promising new African American staffers and suppliers, so he was ready to talk business even on a weekend trip to his barber. On hearing the young composer’s story, Richards handed him a card, saying, "Call me… next week." Paul made sure he called Richards. That meeting was most fortunate for Paul and for Herschel. It set them on the path to success and helped establish their reputation with even the biggest and best clients, which included such major brand names as Kraft, Quaker Oats, Campbell Soup Company, United Airlines, Kellogg Company, Coca-Cola, Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, Anheuser Busch, Busch Entertainment, Disney-ABC Domestic Television, Mars Incorporated, Alberto-Culver and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions (Oprah Winfrey). In 1980, People magazine, they featured an article on Paul. The title was "Lookout. A Guide To The Up And Coming."
Paul says, "To be successful, you have to be a chameleon. You're paid to do a job, not to be a conscience." Paul wrote and composed many memorable TV and Radio music spots during the commercial phase of his career. Some of the many highlights include; "I Wanna Pop, I Wanna Shasta" for Shasta Beverages, "Sweet Talker, Betty Crocker" for Betty Crocker, "Mmm, Ahh, Ohh, Pop ‘N Fresh Dough" for Pillsbury. "Until 1981, I was known for lavish, heartwarming arrangements," says Wilson, who is a classically trained flutist with degrees in composition and orchestration. "Then I had a hit with "I Wanna Pop! I Wanna Shasta!" and suddenly I was the rock ‘n’ roll guy, the king of the synthesizers." Paul won a prestigious CLIO award for his arranging work on the McDonalds commercial "Makin’ Music."
Calling Me Home, Chicago
In 1985, Paul scored a true "crossover hit" when a song he’d created for Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau and composed both lyrics and music featuring Lee Montgomery "Calling Me Home, Chicago," a song written for a $10 million state tourism campaign, became so instantly popular that it was released as a single and sold through area record stores. Jan Zechman of Jan Zechman Associates said, "For Chicago Tourism, our advertising agency asked six local composers to create a musical centerpiece for our campaign. We expected the competition to be fierce. It was not. One airing of Paul's musical vision was enough to win him the job, and to help us create one of the most memorable and successful tourism campaigns in Chicago history. I believe in the power of words, but the power of Paul's music, his notes, proved mightier than any pen on this day." That song is widely regarded even today as one of the true "classic" songs of Chicago.
Ruth L. Ratny, the owner of the magazine "Screen" and editor, she wrote, "Among the most memorable for the Illinois Department of Tourism, are the unforgettable "Calling Me Home, Chicago." State tourism director Lynda Simon says isn’t surprised that Wilson was able to write words and that went a long way towards popularizing the agency’s first major television campaign. "He’s a very talented and creative person," says Simon, "and he’s a joy to work with."
Recording and live performance
In 1987, because of his desire to re-enter the record business, Paul (with attorney Linda Mensch) discovered and produced a new artist, "Nikki." Eventually signed to Geffen Records, the debut album entitled "Nikki" was released in the summer of 1989. One song, "Notice Me" was a hit, reaching #21 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #11 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, bringing Paul honors from BMI as writer and publisher of one of the most performed songs of the year.
In early 1989, Paul was called on by noted choral conductor Nathan Carter to orchestrate Robert Ray’s "Gospel Mass" for a joint performance of the Morgan State University Choir and the Detroit Symphony. Also in 1989, Paul was appointed conductor/artistic director for a concert series entitled "Classic Black" (Executive Produced by Valarie Norman). The first concert was given at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall in April 1990.
Paul wrote:
Un-D-Nyable Entertainment, Inc.
In 1997, Wilson accepted an offer from Frank Thomas, "The Big Hurt" the star player and home run hitter of the Chicago White Sox, to serve as President of Un-D-Nyable Entertainment, an independent record label. Paul agreed to run the label in partnership with Thomas.
Their initial release was a CD single entitled "3-5, The White Sox Got’em Open Up Wide," with Frank Thomas featuring D. Stoy. Paul discovered and signed Dejah Gomez, a precociously talented 14-year-old singer and songwriter, and hired Cleo Powell, who had an established reputation locally for recognizing and nurturing talent, as the label’s A&R Director.
In 1998, Wilson hired Jun Mhoon, accomplished both as a musician and an executive at A&M Records, as Executive V.P. General Manager and Maurice White, formerly with Columbia Records, as Promotion Director and Jon Smith, Studio Manager. He also signed Entourage (James "Slique" Adams, Floyd Massey, Eric Wade and Irone Guyton, a R&B singing group), rapper Ant-Dub and STRONG, an R&B group that was a family of five brothers. He then secured the services of songwriters/producers, Jack & Earl and George Claiborne. He soon formed an alliance with the music distributors, Navarro.
In late 1998, Wilson produced the debut CD for Dejah Gomez ("Dejah") and Entourage ("The Fall Backs of a Playa") and matching videos for the CD songs and a CD single title "I Can’t Hide" featuring STRONG. In December, a single "When," by Entourage, they charted on Billboard. Soon, both Dejah Gomez and Entourage were starting to "take off," but, in January 1999, just as the action and excitement was building for his young record company, Paul Wilson suffered a stroke.
Health
On January 2, 1999, the stroke left the active and energetic 46-year old composer, producer and businessman suddenly and seriously disabled (CT). The doctors revealed that an ischemic CVA of left MCA with hemorrhagic transformation. Paul was told he’d have to accept lasting and severe restrictions on his ability to verbally communicate, due to the post-stroke condition known as Aphasia.
Aphasia is the inability to speak, read, write or understand speech. Wilson was hospitalized at West Suburban Hospital Medical Center in Oak Park and Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Subsequently, he went through rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Willowbrook, where he met Edie Babbitt, M.Ed. who now works with Leora Cherney, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Northwestern University Medical School, doing aphasia research.
Paul wrote:
In need of a restful setting for his recuperation, Paul and his wife, Terry, relocated to Maui in Hawaii where they lived for five years. Paul eventually found and studied with Dr. Walter Tokishi, a speech therapist, but the scarcity of expert medical support to help him overcome the limitations imposed by his aphasia was still a drawback of living on Maui. In 2005, he returned to Chicago, where he began an intensive rehabilitation regimen, fiercely determined to resume his musical career.
Personal life
Paul has six brothers. They are: James Warren (classical/gospel organ, piano), Herbert Liston (Acoustic/electric bass), John Oland (vocalist), Mark Andrew, Steward Franklin (B-3, piano). One brother, Mark, died when he was an infant do to heart complication.

DACC Liberal Arts Division Presents a Music Event!
Altered Sound Duo (Nick Fox, Percussion and Chris Murphy, Saxophone) Tuesday, February 6; 7:30PM Bremer Conference Center Theater FREE Admission
Altered Sound Duo is committed to promoting contemporary repertoire for saxophone and percussion. The duo formed during the spring of 2017 and has performed throughout the Ohio region. During this inaugural tour, the duo will perform at universities throughout Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. As advocates for new music, the duo hopes to commission innovative and virtuosic works for saxophone and percussion.
Chris Murphy is a saxophone soloist and music educator living in Bowling Green, Ohio. Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, Chris received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina with a Performer’s certificate and the Master of Music in Saxophone Performance from Bowling Green State University. He has received honors and award from MTNA and NASA, and was a winner of the Bowling Green State University Concerto competition and the Douglas Wayland Chamber Music Competition. He has played as an alto saxophone soloist with the Dick Goodwin Jazz Band and has performed as a guest musician with the Presbyterian College Wind Ensemble, the Bowling Green State University Wind Ensemble and Orchestra, the Defiance Community Concert Band, as well as the Augusta Symphony as a saxophonist with Melissa Manchester, and the Dearborn Symphony with Linda Eder.
Nick Fox is an active percussionist and teacher, currently pursuing a DMA in contemporary music at Bowling Green State University. Fox received a Master’s degree in percussion performance from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He has studied with Dr. Daniel Piccolo, Dr. Gregory Beyer, Tobie Wilkinson, Dr. Patti Cudd, and Michael Mixtacki. In addition to teaching and solo performance commitments, Fox is a founding member of the percussion quartet Landlocked Percussion, this group focuses on prominent contemporary chamber works. In 2014, Trevor Saint and Fox formed the percussion duo Undue. This project has lead to the commission of three new works and a Midwest tour including performances/masterclasses at seven universities. The following year, Fox organized his solo tour debut including six universities and several arts clubs. Fox has had the opportunity to perform with many influential artists, such as Jan Williams, Greg Beyer, Stuart Gerber, Tim Munroe, Shara Nova, Dal Niente, Erik Griswold, and members of the JACK Quartet. Fox has been awarded grant funding to assist with the commissioning of new works, transportation to music conferences, and summer music festivals such as New Music On the Point in Vermont. As a committed new music activist, Fox has expanded the percussion repertoire through commissions/collaborations with composers Matthew Burtner, James Romig, Jeff Herriott, and Christopher Burns, just to name a few. Fox organized a performance of Gerard Grisey’s Le Noir de L’Etoile at the 3rd Annual New Music Gathering and looks forward to a possible performance at this summer’s festival in Boston.

The Musicians Behind the Orchestra
By Kiera Hufford, contributor
A preview of Jazz at Lincoln Center, performing on the Flynn MainStage October 6 at 8 p.m. Tickets and information are available at flynntix.org.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) boasts that they’re “made up of 15 of the finest soloists, ensemble players, and arrangers in jazz music today.” And while there’s no denying that bandleader Wynton Marsalis—who started playing trumpet when he was 12, studying at Juilliard School when he was 17, and is now a world-renowned trumpeter and composer—is incredible, just how impressive are the rest of the members?
First, there are the saxophonists: Walter Blanding, Victor Goines, Sherman Irby, Ted Nash, and Paul Nedzela.
Blanding joined the JLCO back in 1998 and has been playing the saxophone since he was six. Blanding was performing regularly with his parents by the time he was sixteen, attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts, and had his 1991 debut release Tough Young Tenors was considered by many as one of the year’s best jazz albums.
Goines received his Bachelor of Music degree from Loyola University in 1984 and his Master’s of Music from the Virginia Commonwealth University in 1990. He has been a member of JLCO and the Wynton Marsalis Septet since 1993, with more than 20 recorded albums and more than 50 original works under his belt. Along with playing in the JLCO, Goines is currently serving as the Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at Northwestern University.
Irby was a member of JLCO from 1995 to 1997. While he was in high school, he played and recorded with James Cleveland—a pastor, pianist, singer, and composer who was widely regarded as the “King of Gospel.” Irby went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Clark Atlanta University and joined Johnny O’Neal’s Atlanta-based quintet in 1991. In 2001, Irby created the Black Warrior Records label, named after its first release Black Warrior, and has served as Regional Director of the JazzMasters Workshop since 2003.
Nash currently serves as a co-leader of the Jazz Composers Collective. Both his father (Dick Nash) and his late-uncle (Ted Nash) were well-known jazz and studio musicians, so it was only natural that Nash himself followed the jazz path—but it wasn’t until he was 18 that he became known in the jazz world, moving to New York and releasing his first album. Nash’s album Portrait in Seven Shades was released in 2010 and was the first composition JLCO released that featured original music by a member of the orchestra other than Marsalis.
Nedzela is JLCO’s baritone saxophonist and is regarded as one of the top baritone sax players of today. He studied alongside famous baritone saxophonists, received his Bachelor of Arts in mathematics in 2006 from McGill University (where he graduated with honors) and received his Master of Music degree from Juilliard in 2008. He’s played with renowned artists and ensembles, including George Benson, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Dianne Reeves, and Frank Sinatra, Jr.
Then we have the trombonists: Christ Crenshaw, Vincent Gardner, and Elliot Mason.
Crenshaw joined the JLCO in 2006, and they later premiered his composition God’s Trombones. He started his music career on the piano at age three, but decided to try his hand at the trombone when he was eleven. In his young adult life, Crenshaw received his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance (with honors) from Valdosta State University—where he was also awarded the Most Outstanding Student in VSU Music Department and College of Arts—and received his Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Juilliard.
Gardner settled on the trombone when he was 12, but not before trying his hand at a variety of other instruments (saxophone, french horn, piano, violin. He even sang.) After completing a world tour with Lauryn Hill in 2000, Gardner joined the JLCO. In 2009, the JLCO commissioned Gardner to write a 60-minute suite entitled The Jesse B. Semple Suite, which was inspired by Langston Hughes’ short stories.
Mason has been with the JLCO since 2006 and is co-leader of the Mason Brothers Quintet alongside his brother, Brad. When he was four, Mason initially started lessons on the trumpet—but it only took him three years to switch over to the trombone. He was performing at venues at age 11, focusing on jazz and improvisation, and eventually left home at age 16 to enroll at the Berklee College of Music on a full-tuition scholarship. He’s currently working at Northwestern University as the Jazz Trombone Instructor.
The trumpeters: Ryan Kisor, Marcus Printup, and Kenny Rampton.
Kisor has been with the JLCO since 1994. He first discovered the trumpet at age four, and his passion continued from there. He won first place at the Thelonious Monk Institute’s first annual Louis Armstrong Trumpet Competition in 1990 and studied at the Manhattan School of Music with trumpeter Lew Soloff.
Printup, unlike many of the others, first experienced music through the gospel his parents sang at church (as opposed to picking up an instrument). He attended the University of North Florida on a music scholarship where he won the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet competition. He met pianist and mentor Marcus Roberts in 1991 and in 1993, Roberts introduced Printup to Marsalis, opening the door for Printup to join the JLCO.
Rampton is a more recent member, joining the JLCO in 2010. He performs with the Mingus Big Band and The Mingus Orchestra—among others—and is the leader of his own sextet. He performed at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2010 with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. He was recently hired by Sesame Street as the trumpet voice.
Carlos Henriquez is on bass.
Henriquez discovered music when he was young but didn’t begin playing bass until he was enrolled in the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program and studying at LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts. He’s been a member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the JLCO since 1998; however, his first encounter with the Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) was in 1996 when he was part of the LaGuardia Concert Jazz Ensemble, which took first place in the JALC’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival.
Ali Jackson plays the drums.
Jackson has been with the JLCO since 2005, currently performs with the Wynton Marsalis Quartet, and leads the Ali Jackson Quartet. He was the recipient of Michigan’s prestigious Artserv Emerging Artist and was selected as the soloist for the “Beacon’s of Jazz” concert at the New School Jazz at Lincoln Center University. Jackson studied at the New School University for Contemporary Music where he earned his undergrad degree in Music Composition.
And Dan Nimmer is JLCO’s pianist.
Nimmer’s musical interest began by studying classical piano, which eventually transformed into an interest in jazz. He played alongside saxophonist and mentor Berkley Fudge and studied music at Northern Illinois University. One year after making his move from Chicago to New York, Nimmer became a member of the JLCO and the Wynton Marsalis Quartet.
The JLCO has a knack for bringing impressive musicians to the stage and has even more musicians lined up on a substitute roster, in case someone is unable to make a show.
Whether you’re a jazz-lover or otherwise, JLCO at the Flynn is sure to be an amazing experience.

IHEARIC VIDEOS: A Cover of Philip Glass, A Wind Trio, and Some Funk https://ift.tt/2GvOYAF
Thanks to Justin K Comer for providing information on who the musicians are. The week we present three shorter videos from the IHearIC YouTube channel. The first is a live of "Knee Play 5", a song from Philip Glass's opera, "Einstein on the Beach". It features Jared Fowler on keyboard and Megan Karls on violin. Unfortunately, we don't know who the speaker was. "In 2011 Jared Fowler completed his master’s degree in String Performance under the direction of Volkan Orhon. From 2009-2011 he held the position of Teacher’s Assistant for the Jazz Studies program, and maintained an active and varied performance schedule inside and outside of the university. Jared collaborated widely in many genres performing in live-sound installations, Brazilian jazz trios, and onstage with the Des Moines, Dubuque and Waterloo Symphonies. "In 2009, Jared initiated the IHearIC concert series, a fast-paced show that presents performances by UI music students and local musicians. In 2011, the project was awarded an Iowa Arts grant funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. "Currently based in Los Angeles, Jared works as the Instructional Assistant of Music at the LA Harbor College. You can learn more at: www.jaredfowler.com/" - from his page on the University of Iowa Double Bass Studio website Jared Fowler on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/jaredfowler "Megan Karls delights in her fifth season with the Cascade Quartet and as Principal Second Violin of the Great Falls Symphony. "Marjorie began playing the clarinet at the age of 11. Growing up in Central Florida, she studied with the principal clarinetist of the Orlando Philharmonic, who remains the most influential person in shaping her musical career. "Marjorie earned a Bachelors degree in Music Performance from University of Florida, a Masters degree in Music Performance from Northern Illinois University, and is currently pursuing her education further at the University of Iowa where she is a Doctoral candidate and the graduate teaching assistant. She also works at Oaknoll as a recreation aide." - from her page on the West Music website "Oboist and English horn player, Meghan Woodard is an active freelance performer and teacher in the greater Philadelphia area. She currently teaches oboe students at Temple University, Haverford College, and Bryn Mawr College. In November 2015 Meghan was a featured soloist with the Temple University Wind Symphony, performing the Concerto for Oboe and Wind Band by Lukas Foss (arr. Rhoads)—a piece that she also edited for a new edition with PeerMusic Classical. Meghan was also a founding member and manager of the Philadelphia-based woodwind quintet, Federal Winds, whom she performed several unique concerts with in 2016 as part of the 'Project Stream Grant' awarded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. "In the orchestral world, Meghan has recently performed with Symphony in C, the Wilmington Ballet Orchestra, and the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra. Previously, Meghan was a member of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra in Cedar Falls, Iowa from 2012 to 2013; before that she performed as Co-Principal Oboe with the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra in Norwalk, Connecticut from 2009 to 2010. She has subbed with orchestras in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Connecticut, and New York since 2007." - from her page on the Fine Art Music Company website "California native Dr. Stephanie Willow Patterson is a bassoonist with a passion for collaboration, outreach, and contemporary music. She is the Assistant Professor of Bassoon at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University and the Principal Bassoonist of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Columbus, GA. As a member of the Enid Trio, she performs across the country, reaching out to young musicians to share their love of innovative music and education. She has previously taught at Wichita State University. "Stephanie performs and teaches at the Festival Internacional de Música Colonial Brasileira e Música Antiga in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, and is a founding member of the Woods, Winds, and Willows Chamber Orchestra. She has been invited to perform at the Fairbanks New Music Festival, the Sonorities Festival in Belfast, Ireland, the IHearIC music series, and the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Bassoon Symposium. She has been a member of the Wichita Symphony and Wichita Grand Opera, the Fairbanks Symphony and Arctic Chamber Orchestra, and has performed with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony, Orchestra Iowa, and the Quad-Cities Symphony. She has also performed with the Iowa City Jazz Vespers group and the Wichita-based free-jazz Bodo ensemble. "Her primary bassoon gurus have been Professors George Sakakeeny, Nicolasa Kuster, Scott Oakes and Benjamin Coelho though she has also dabbled in improvisation under the direction of jazz bassoonist Paul Hansen, and studied in St. Petersburg, Russia with Igor Gerasimov. She holds degrees in music and Russian language from the Oberlin Conservatory and College, Wichita State University, and a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Iowa... "Crossing genres with performances in costume, she has performed Michael Daugherty’s Dead Elvis at the Wichita Knob Festival at the FischHaus art gallery, and In Freundschaft by Stockhausen for bassoon-playing teddy bear. She has performed in Carnegie Hall, on the busy streets of Moscow, on the pedestrian malls of Madrid, in the gilded Kappella hall in St. Petersburg, inside a medieval church in Prague, for low-income afterschool programs in Alaska, with Pierre Boulez at the Kunstmuseum Luzern, atop a gallows at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, in a room with speakers on all sides and below the audience, and in the mountains of North Carolina." - from her home page Home page: https://stephaniewillowpatterson.com/ Stephanie Willow Patterson on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/stephanie-patterson-7 The Enid Trio on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Enidtrio/ "reldnips and Mr. Ting met as music students at the University of Iowa. They both had a deep passion for music, but the traditional musical curriculum had been leaving them with a stiff neck like a bad night of sleep. Their first venture was beginning a funky group called The BBQ Mansion Brass Band. The group was successful but only lasted for one semester. Meanwhile, both had been working on music on their own. reldnips was writing raps and making beats. Mr. Ting was making synth fueled dance tracks. After one summer break the two knew that they had to collaborate and form a single effort. The goal of the group is to create music that's funky and danceable, driven by an inescapable groove. They bring a unique sound to a contemporary style with the use of trombone and sousaphone. By incorporating effects, the duo turns these traditional instruments into tools for funking and grooving into the future of contemporary music styles. If it's not fun, what's the point?
