0083 Rebellion is doing a really commendable job at being a fix fic for Stardust Memory, its honestly kinda impressive

the "who should pilot the Gundam subplot" is way less annoying, Monsha's first appearance isn't him being a sex pest and he's actually kinda competent, Nina's connection to Gato is actually foreshadowed, Kou isn't recklessly stupid with his Gp01 adjustments in space thing, etc...

plus the art is really good so I'd really recommend this manga if you want to see the Stardust Memory plot done with more finesse and the advantage of 20/20 hindsight

Finished Stardust Memory. I don't have much to say on it other than "cool animation". Kou fucking sucks and I really don't get the Nina hate other than dudes being mad she cucked Kou or whatever. It was cool to see the circumstances that created the Titans and getting to know personally the kinds of people who'd join them but it unfortunately did not make it enjoyable to watch Monsha be a whiny creep for the entire series.

I really can't get over this. Athrun asking Cagali if she brought a dress because he doesn't think she is taking her political role seriously despite the fact her title is "Chairman" and she is dressed like a business executive... thats some Bernard Monsha shit. Gundam SEED has a scene where Cagali princess carries him in her mobile suit cockpit to safety during the final big and the second he gets out he turned into MONSHA?

I am working out alone now during the week, so I decided while im on the treadmill or bike or whatever i'll finally start Gundam SEED Destiny.

There isn't a lot to say so far other than how notable traditional gender roles are pushed in the first episode (Athrun telling Cagali she needs to wear dresses instead of pant suits to be taken seriously as a governmental leader, the insistence on calling her a princess when her title is Chairman, Stella falling into Shinn's arms breastfully) which I can't help but feel like are ratcheted up from UC. The UC writers had a lot to say about Gender for sure, but at times it felt more like a conversation than a declaration.

The Impulse gundam is pretty cool. I am undecided on the new Zaku design. The other new gundams look dumb as hell.

It seems like the first three episodes (i am midway through episode 3) are one full battle which would be.... A choice. The battle choreography seems okay though. I cant compare it to SEED though cause I watched SEED in 2018. For better or worse I am in for the long hole. I pray to god that someone as interesting as Flay shows up.

Oh god, Reiko-san (from Kapuki shop) looks so fricking cool in that all black outfit! Kimono is a monsha, a type of woven-patterned silk gauze, paired with an amazing black antique obi depicting glorious botan/peony (unusual color for this pattern). The touches of white add just the right amount of balance, amazing styling!

All black kimono outfits (including black accessories like juban) is traditionally only worn for funerals. I’ve touched it several times here, I am so glad to see it more and more in fashion looks!

TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT

Developed using captured Zaku IIs, the Zanny was one of the first mobile suits developed by the EFF prior to Operation V. Its development was harshly underfunded and suffered from technical issues, resulting in a bucket of bolts with a shoddy design and high failure rates during testing. In the end, it was mainly used to train early feddie mobile suit pilots, and develop newer MS from it.

In the Thunderbolt version, the Zanny was still developed by the EFF using captured Zaku units, but its design differed, looking more like a fusion of a GM and a Zaku.

EQUIPMENT

It was lightly armed, with a head-mounted 60mm vulcan gun and a 120mm cannon that was a modified version of the Ball's.

HISTORY

(I could not find anything for it's history in the original, but I did find some for the Thunderbolt version, which is what this'll cover)

The Zanny was used by the EFF in the Thunderbolt manga, though they also provided it to the allied South Seas Alliance, who used it to recover dead/wounded soldiers and their MS from the battlefields. A large number of them were used to defend the South Seas Alliance's territory, a few of which were equipped with flotation equipment to traverse water.

LEGACY

It was presumably a stepping stone in the Federation's mobile suit development history, though nothing points at it leading to anything in particular or being developed into anything else. As far as I can find, it doesn't have any variants or successors.

It appeared in the SD Gundam G Generation games and Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation Code Fairy.

Weirdly enough though, in the ONA version of Thunderbolt, the Zanny is instead known as the SRf-06 Dahle, having a similar design with a purple color scheme and a slightly different development history. In the ONA, its a South Seas Alliance suit, instead of a feddie suit being provided to them. It was the SSA's mainstay MS, developed from salvaged parts during the OYW due to a lack of funds (Explaining how it still has GM and Zaku design principles), and its weapons also included those of the GM and Zaku, those being a machine gun, a Zaku Bazooka, a heat hawk, a beam saber, and a shield.

I firmly contend that Cima is one of the four good characters in 0083 (which I hate so goddamn much mostly because the love triangle is dumb and I hate everyone in it for being either dumb or an asshat and it's gotten in the way all four separate times I've tried to watch it) she's great, Squad lead gramps is also great but [spoilers] and wussy blonde friend x giant mechanic women is delightful and 3000x better than Kou, Gato & whatsherface angsting in circles like they're 17 instead of 20-40

For the most part I agree!! Cima’s got a large amount of depth you wouldn’t expect based on her first appearance, South Burning (WHAT A COOL NAME!!) is one of the few actually rational and levelheaded people on the Albion that tries to get things done, I’ve always been a sucker for Kai-like characters so Keith is still entertaining, and I’ll go for any female character that isn’t designed to be conventionally attractive by anime standards, and that includes Mora and Cima.

HOWEVER, as much as I harsh on 08th and 0083, I’m mostly okay with most of the characters in them since they still mostly succeed in their roles. Delaz and Gato are evidence of how deeply Ghiren’s (and mainline Zeon) rhetoric and propaganda has penetrated into the Zeon remnants’ consciousness, and Uraki is a wonderful example of a Gundam protagonist really not coping with all the stress that entails. But yeah, there’s a lot of problems in 0083, including how characters like Nina and Monsha are unreasonably irrational, on top of weird pacing and focus thanks to the different writers and directors.

Cima comes out on top in any case, though. I don’t care if Gato is popular for the meme, Cima’s my Big Favorite of 0083.
