The Lift > an elevator/elevators
Inanimate Object Characters List | Entry: 45
I'M SO GLAD THAT I CAN DO THIS MOVIE NOW.
Okay, I could seriously write a WHOLE ESSAY about how much I love this movie and why. In fact, I have done that before on other social media, but I will spare you from the immense texts here.
Similarly to The Brave Little Toaster and Cars, though a little later on and more indirectly (because at that age, I wasn't allowed to watch it, due to the inappropriate scenes - so I had only looked at fragments of the movie at first), this movie has been part of my childhood.
And The Lift is undoubtedly the best thing the Dutch have made. (I'm Dutch, by the way, so I'm very proud of this.) Thank you, Dick Maas.
Character: homicidal elevator(s?)
Movie: The Lift (1983)
If I had to change anything about this movie, I'd remove the inappropriate scenes (because it delayed the time when I saw this movie start to finish and it really wasn't necessary for the movie's storyline anyway), I'd only let the middle one actually kill people (the right one suddenly killed a person, too, but I liked the middle one being the sole culprit better - it was more menacing somehow) and that first group of people? They should have died! Then my dear elevator would have had a higher kill count than some human killers in movies! I'd be so proud of it... *wipes away a tear
By the way, both this movie and Christine were made in 1983.
1983 must have been the year of absolute brilliance.

CW: Lift Horror. Imo, if you're not into lift horror, don't watch this clip, or the horror film The Lift.
#me watches films#The Lift#Luckily it's impossible to be scared when people are speaking Dutch#One of my favourite things about this film is how the subtitles often translated 'lift' as 'elevator'#Even though they were just saying 'lift' and we could hear them saying 'lift' and the movie was called 'The Lift'

I was rambling on the issue of museums and human remains and how certain populations are more likely to have their bodies put on display to be gawked at and then went "well I guess the Pompeii casts were of Europeans. there are bones in there right?" and Googled it to make sure, at which point I confirmed that yes there are bones in there, but more interestingly DNA testing revealed that a cast of an adult holding a child everyone assumed was a mother and child were, in fact, a man and a kid entirely unrelated to him. Honestly that's more moving to me. Maybe they were connected in a way other than blood, but maybe a stranger saw a child when the world was ending and thought the one thing he could do was hold them.
#or maybe he was the babysitter. idk#crack open a pompeii cast like a kinder egg and there's teeth in there#now personally if people wanted to put my bones on display I'd be cool with it#maybe I'll decide to donate myself to science idk. I don't want to be used to practice face lifts though...#writing in my will 'if someone wants to have my skull on their bookshelf that's fine. put a candle inside it'#why this

| NLRP #37 | Favourite inanimate object characters
Last week, while looking for more entries, I came across this Reddit post that asked what our favorite character is who's a sentient object and of course, I had to reply to a question like that. |B)
I got way too many favourites in this catagory of characters. I eventually decided to pick two of the most obscure The Brave Little Toaster characters: the stove that appeared in the junk shop and the entertainment complex in Rob's mother's house. Each of those two are "special" to me in their own funny way. I also chose Grem from Cars (though there are MANY other Cars characters I love, too). And the elevator from The Lift (that's why the movie is in my top 3 favourite horror movies, obviously). Later, I decided to further expand that list with Electrode and Klinklang. I've been downright OBSESSED with all of these characters. Naturally, all of these (except the Pokémon) are from media that are my favourite media as well.
To give them some recognition and appreciation, I thought I'd share that list with you guys here, too. Now I really want to know who y'all's favourites are, so if you want, do let me know in the comments. :D
---- FAVOURITE CHARACTERS ----
ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX (The Brave Little Toaster)
UNNAMED STOVE (The Brave Little Toaster)
GREM (Cars 2)
UNNAMED ELEVATOR (The Lift)
ELECTRODE (Pokémon franchise)
KLINKLANG (Pokémon franchise)

Characters: Entertainment Complex, unnamed stove, Grem, unnamed elevator, Electrode, Klinklang

Shared here today by Matthew Boroson on Facebook. (ETA: Gaining inspiration from other authors is great. Lifting passages and avoiding giving credit isn’t.)
Tanith Lee was the first woman to win the British Fantasy Award for best novel, for the second book of the Flat Earth series. She died in 2015. You can buy Tales From the Flat Earth here and here .
#neil gaiman#tanith lee#I had no idea#this has made me even angrier#and also clarifies a few more things for me#anyway I thought you’d want to know#eta: inspiration is not plagiarism — the problem is not that he was inspired by other works#most good authors are#the problem is lifting passages#and the other problem is not crediting inspiration where it’s clearly due
