Digital Noise Episode 320: That Fist of Legend Man Wright is Nobody's Fool DIGITAL NOISE EPISODE 320: THAT FIST OF LEGEND MAN WRIGHT IS NOBODY’S FOOL This is a weird episode of Digital Noise. Mainly because we have not a single horror film to talk about. Sometimes it just shakes out that way. But Chris and Wright do discuss that period piece version of Top Gun movie that… Read More »Digital Noise Episode 320: That Fist of Legend Man Wright is Nobody’s Fool read more on One of Us

Jet Li as Chinese folk hero Fong Sai Yuk (1993).
Li starred and produced Fong Sai Yuk, and the sequel Fong Sai Yuk ll (also 1993) after he left the mega-popular Once Upon A Time In China film series. (He would return for the final entry, Once Upon A Time In China And America, in 1997).
Fong Sai Yuk allowed Li to play a younger, more mischievous character than Wong Fei Hung, the hero of the OUATIC franchise. Li's playful, comedic side - which was much on display throughout much of his earlier work - was on full display here.
But the films did not lack for martial arts action. The fight scenes are fast-paced, breathtaking, and very entertaining. The films' director, Corey Yuen, won a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Action Choreography. The films were also box office hits in Hong Kong, and are still very popular.
The films have also been released with the titles The Legend and The Legend ll. They are well worth the effort to track down and watch.

Sorry if you've answered this before but I did search your blog and nothing showed up for me. But I was wondering if you have any favorite fight scenes from movies and tv shows? Like physical fight/combat scenes that actually blow you away by how good they look? Where it doesn't look too choreographed and even though it's stylized, it still looks awesome? For me personally, kdramas take the cake for best fight scenes, and one of my hands down favorite fight scenes of all time was from bloodhounds ep 1 when woo doo hwan's character had to fight to get to his mom. Like I was truly in awe watching that scene, I couldn't believe my eyes haha. Would love to know your favorites and/or thoughts on fight/combat scenes :)
Ooh yes! So. I grew up with martial arts movies, my cousins loved Jet Li so a lot of my favourite fight scenes are from the movies I grew up with
Twin Warriors/Tai Chi Master
Tumblr media
Fist of Legend
Tumblr media
Once Upon A Time In China
Tumblr media
Fong Sai Yuk
Tumblr media
and then when I was a bit older and started watching them on my own, I still had affection for Jet Li so:
Romeo Must Die (and I loved Aaliyah??)
Tumblr media
Cradle 2 The Grave (with DMX??)
Tumblr media
Hero (although I was really more watching for Zhang Ziyi)
Tumblr media
speaking of, Michelle Yeoh vs Zhang Ziyi in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? ICONIC
Tumblr media
and speaking of Michelle Yeoh, Magnificent Warriors
Tumblr media
House of Flying Daggers
Tumblr media
I'm always going to love Morpheus vs Neo in The Matrix
Tumblr media
The Bride vs Crazy 88 in Kill Bill
Tumblr media
can't bring up Kill Bill without bringing up Lady Snowblood
Tumblr media
My favourite John Wick fight scenes are in chapter 2
Tumblr media
and I do like a good shootout scene. I remember thinking The Town was so mid and did not understand the praise that movie got, I still don't, but it had good shootout scenes
Tumblr media
LA Confidential
Tumblr media
Heat has one of the most iconic shootout scenes too
Tumblr media
The Bourne trilogy actually has some pretty good hand to hand combat scenes, one of which actually got claps in the theatre I was in

The once and future Wong Fei-hungs!
Vincent Zhao, as the Governor of Nine Gates, battles Jet Li, as Fong Sai-yuk, in this behind-the-scenes look from Fong Sai-yuk (1993), aka The Legend. Note all the visible wires needed for the flying "wire fu" fighting.
Jet Li had just left the Once Upon A Time In China film series, after portraying real-life martial arts legend Wong Fei-hung in the first three films.
Vincent Zhao was the actor who replaced him as Fei-hung that same year, starring in OUATIC lV and V, as well as a 20-episode television series.
Li returned to the role of Wong Fei-hung for the last time in the last film of the series, Once Upon A Time In China And America (1997).

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938, Michael Curtiz, William Keighley)
The Legend of Fong Sai-Yuk (1993, Corey Yuen)
Today I present a pair of action-packed tales of legendary folk heroes. Not only are both Errol Flynn and Corey Yuen playing famous folk heroes, but these films would help solidify their own legendary statuses. Revel in the lavish pageantry and stunning fight choreography.
