乔家的儿女 The Bond | Review

The last couple of years I totally changed my taste for dramas. Maybe because what's happening to the world right now, but I switched from loving slice of life dramas to only consuming wuxia and xianxia and all those kind of fantasy chinese stories, becoming completely unable to truly enjoy some more realistic stories, specially from China. But in the last couple of months, there's been a few production that really were able to catch my attention, one being "Crush", wich I already talked in another post, other being "The day of becoming you" even though I don't know if it fit in the "realistic" genre, but neither of them has amazed me more that the story of the Qiao family.

《乔家的儿女》 (lit. The children of the Qiao family) it's a 36 episodes chinese drama from 2021 based on the novel of the same name by Wei Xi (未夕). It follows the life of the Qiao family, from 1977 to 2006, when the eldest brother, Yicheng, being only a 11 years old, had to take the responsability of raising his younger sibling after their mother's death and the negligence of their father, who only cares about himself.

Story

There's a few thing I want to talk about. For some people this kind of stories may be slow or "boring", but let me tell you there's nothing to worry about in that aspect. We get catch at the very beginning by this family's dynamic: a family where the mom has just died for giving birth to their 5th son, where the father thinks their children can fend for themselves, and the 4 children (and one newborn) that sometimes don't have too much to eat.

How can we not get attached or at least get concerned by these kids wellbeing? Seeing how an eleven years old boy had to raise his sibling, having to confront in multiple times his father to give them money to survive, and how later having to become their father figure, even when they were already all adults, make me really anxious but at the end of the day very pround of Yicheng.

The characters are very well wrtitten. The sibling have very distinct personalities: Yicheng the protector one, Erqian the sensitive one, Sanli the down to earth one, Simei the free spirit and Qiqi the shy one. The writters take those traids and they keep their characters loyals to them, but that doesn't mean there is no character development, quite the opposite, every one of them chages a lot during those 30 years, but in a way that's believable. The develompment is according to their expiriences, their traumas and archivements. Their development doesn't feel like is for the convenience of the plot.

They also provided us with down to earth relationships. In the real world, for most mortals, you don't meet your partners in an accident, or when meeting your childhood rival or any of those cliché scenes that are overly use in dramaland. Your partners end up being your classmate, your coworkers or the friend of your friend, and you built a relationship before falling over heels for that person and, even so, those relationships can fail. Mariage is not the end of the road. Different goals in life, family's relationship, affairs, and the memories of past lovers can ruin those relationships and this dramas show you that that is okay, and that you can heal, forgive and keep going on with your life.

Acting

What can I say? the cast was perfect. You really belive every line the actors and actress say... and sometimes they don't need to say nothing at all to get their emotions. Even the kids outshine some actors out there.

But for me, who undeniable shine is Song Zu'er, our little Qiao Simei. This girl truly expressed every single emotions. There is an scene in episode 29 you can pinpoit the second her hearts breaks in half yes I'm quoting Bart Simpson but it defenitly applies for that scene.

OST

The instrumentals for this production is on the softess side. The tracks never distract you from what happening in the scene and that is because all the emotions are well displayed by the actors, the music doesn't need to be on the spotlight.

Now, on the other hand, the songs. I was a little bit sceptical about the songs, in part 'cause it wasn't a genre I was used to, they needed to work for a story that covers 3 decades, but a few episodes in and I was in love with some of them, specially Wild Bird 《野鸟》 by A RUN 金润吉 and Blank 《留白》 by Juno Su 苏诗丁. It really hurts me that the last one is not on spotify because IT'S BEAUTIFUL.

Technical aspects

Can we appreciate attention to detail the production team put in this drama? Like I said, this story covers 30 years of the Qiao family and of course places like the main room in the Qiao house change... but it happens so gradually that you don't even notice at least is a very obvious change that the characters bring on, like buying a new TV or a new refrigerator, otherwise you are completly oblivious until the change in the room is too big to go unnoticed. Or the meals, you can see how their meals start to get better as the sibling start to work.

Is facinating to see the change in the city, the offices and the tecnology, specially the phones, how many memories were triggered by those ringtones!

Also, the color grade was so warm, giving us that nostalgic feeling that the whole production tries to make us feel, archiving it beautifuly.

Final thoughts

乔家的儿女 The Bond is a very realistic story with a very nostalgic feeling about the bond some sibling built over the years out of neccesity, but also out of love. We can see how they overcome difficulties with time and efforts, and how love and life is not always rosy, but is also not as bad as one tend to believe. We can heal and go on with our life no matter what.

COMO ES SU DÍA A DÍA EN ABOBO?

Una vez que ya sabemos que es NO ES PENSAR, ES SENTIR, una vez que ya sabemos que es Costa de Marfil, Abidjan y El Barrio de Abobo, nos gustaría presentaros como es el día a día en su vida.

Nos encontramos con una realidad muy sencilla y clara, un matrimonio, 55 niños, una cocina, un aseo y dos habitaciones diáfanas en un amasijo de chabolas, casas bajas...

Aquí es donde transcurre su día a día en cuanto a lugar de “descanso”. 

Ellos se organizan los trabajos en base a la edad de los niños y se dividen en grupos.

• Sus trabajos son: Recogidas de botellas de plástico (niños mas pequeños), lavado de coches (niños medianos), transportar maletas (niños medianos y mayores) y los fines de semana unos se desplazan a la obra (niños mas mayores) y los niños mas pequeños y medianos van a las huertas a recoger plátanos pasados para venderlos y los que sobran, llevarlos a casa. Estos cinco trabajos son lo que les permite comer en su día a día. Tres de ellos entre semana y dos en fin de semana. 

Un día en la obra supone unos 1000 Francos CFA, el otro día os mencionábamos que un euro, son 656 Francos CFA. Lo que hace que intenten ir a trabajar en cadena para conseguir 10 ó 12 euros si van 10 niños a trabajar todo el día.

Pero hoy vamos hablar de lo que allí pudimos vivir allí, para que os hagáis una idea.

Se levantan entre las 4 y las 5 de la mañana para intentar ir a lavarse por turnos y tomar un vaso de leche en polvo o agua con café. Cuando es domingo, desayunan pan duro, que les dan en las tiendas( es el pan pasado de toda la semana) antes de tirarlo. Ellos, lo disfrutan como un manjar.

Tras ello se van a realizar su primer entrenamiento a las 6 de la mañana porque su energía no se la da el comer, sino el fútbol (saca lo mejor de ellos). Después de terminar ese entrenamiento se marchan a trabajar, cada uno en lo que ese día le haya tocado, con el objetivo de volver a casa sobre las 17:00 más o menos con todo el dinero que haya podido conseguir en su caso o comida en su defecto.

Tras llegar a casa sobre las 18:00 suelen realizar el segundo entrenamiento del día en el bosque (ahora por el corona virus), en la playa o en el terreno que utilizaban previo al Corona virus.

Una vez que terminan el entrenamiento se van a lavar de forma progresiva al cubo de agua (habitualmente como producto de la lluvia)  si el agua escasea... no hay “ducha” ya que el agua ante todo, es considerada un elemento necesario para cocinar, pero supongamos que hoy es un día con suerte y tienen agua para las dos cosas...tras esa “ducha” se dirigen a realizar la única comida del día que llevan a su boca de forma oficial para afrontar el descanso de los guerreros. Prefieren comer por la noche, para que el hambre, no se interponga en su sueño.

Edmond y su mujer son las personas que se encargan de dar acogida a estos niños huérfanos y abandonados, junto con tres adultos más que les ayudan en las labores de entrenar a los niños y  de que nadie les pueda borrar esa sonrisa. Ellos son sus ángeles de la guarda y quienes les otorgan la opción de poder estar “protegidos” de alguna manera.

Nuestro, vuestro objetivo será poder ofrecerles la posibilidad de comer, lavarse y estudiar de forma regular, durante todo el curso escolar 2020-2021 y que “solo” tengan que trabajar los fines de semana.

WHAT IS YOUR DAY BY DAY IN ABOBO?

Once we already know that it is NOT TO THINK, IT IS TO FEEL, once we already know that it is Ivory Coast, Abidjan and El Barrio de Abobo, we would like to introduce you to what day-to-day life is like.

We find a very simple and clear reality, a marriage, 55 children, a kitchen, a toilet and two open rooms in a mess of shacks, low houses ...

This is where your day to day in terms of "rest" takes place.

They organize the works based on the age of the children and divide into groups.

• Their jobs are: Collecting plastic bottles (younger children), car wash (medium children), transporting suitcases (medium and older children) and on weekends some go to the construction site (older children) and Smaller and medium-sized children go to the orchards to pick up past bananas to sell and those that are left over take them home. These five jobs are what allow them to eat on a daily basis. Three of them during the week and two on the weekend.

One day at the construction site is around 1,000 CFA francs, the other day we mentioned that one euro is 656 CFA francs. What makes them try to go to work in a chain to get 10 or 12 euros if 10 children go to work all day.

But today we are going to talk about what we could have lived there, so you can get an idea.

They get up between 4 and 5 in the morning to try to take turns washing and having a glass of powdered milk or coffee water. When it is Sunday, they eat hard bread for breakfast, which they give them in stores (it is the last bread of the week) before throwing it away. They enjoy it as a delicacy.

After that, they go to their first training session at 6 in the morning because their energy is not given by eating, but by soccer (it makes the best of them). After finishing that training, they go to work, each one in what that day has been, with the aim of returning home around 17:00 or so with all the money they could get in their case or food in its defect.

After arriving home around 18:00 they usually do the second training of the day in the forest (now because of the Corona virus), on the beach or in the field they used prior to the Corona virus.

Once the training is finished, they will be washed progressively in the bucket of water (usually as a product of the rain) if water is scarce ... there is no "shower" since water is, above all, considered a necessary element for cook, but suppose today is a lucky day and they have water for both ... after that "shower" they head to make the only meal of the day that they officially bring to their mouths to face the rest of the warriors . They prefer to eat at night, so that hunger does not get in their sleep.

Edmond and his wife are the people who take care of these orphaned and abandoned children, along with three more adults who help them in the work of training the children and that nobody can erase that smile. They are your guardian angels and they give you the option to be "protected" in some way.

Our objective will be to be able to offer them the possibility of eating, washing and studying regularly, throughout the 2020-2021 school year and that they "only" have to work on weekends.

Une fois que nous savons déjà que ce n'est pas de penser, c'est de se sentir, une fois que nous savons déjà que c'est la Côte d'Ivoire, Abidjan et El Barrio de Abobo, nous aimerions vous présenter à quoi ressemble la vie quotidienne. On retrouve une réalité très simple et claire, un mariage, 55 enfants, une cuisine, des toilettes et deux pièces ouvertes dans un désordre de cabanes, des maisons basses ... C'est là que se déroule votre quotidien en termes de "repos". Ils organisent les travaux en fonction de l'âge des enfants et se répartissent en groupes. • Leurs tâches sont: la collecte de bouteilles en plastique (jeunes enfants), le lavage de voiture (enfants moyens), le transport de valises (enfants moyens et plus âgés) et le week-end, certains se rendent sur le chantier (enfants plus âgés) et Les enfants plus petits et de taille moyenne se rendent dans les vergers pour ramasser les anciennes bananes à vendre et ceux qui restent les ramènent à la maison. Ces cinq métiers leur permettent de manger au quotidien. Trois d'entre eux en semaine et deux le week-end. Un jour sur le chantier, c'est environ 1 000 francs CFA, l'autre jour, nous avons mentionné qu'un euro représente 656 francs CFA. Ce qui les pousse à aller travailler en chaîne pour obtenir 10 ou 12 euros si 10 enfants vont travailler toute la journée. Mais aujourd'hui, nous allons parler de ce que nous aurions pu y vivre, afin que vous puissiez vous faire une idée. Ils se lèvent entre 4 et 5 heures du matin pour essayer à tour de rôle de se laver et d'avoir un verre de lait en poudre ou d'eau avec du café. Quand c'est dimanche, ils mangent du pain dur pour le petit déjeuner, qu'ils leur donnent dans les magasins (c'est le dernier pain de la semaine) avant de le jeter. Ils l'apprécient comme une délicatesse. Après cela, ils vont à leur première séance d'entraînement à 6 heures du matin parce que leur énergie n'est pas donnée par l'alimentation, mais par le football (ils en tirent le meilleur parti). Après avoir terminé cette formation, ils vont travailler, chacun dans ce que ce jour a été, dans le but de rentrer chez eux vers 17h00 environ avec tout l'argent qu'ils pourraient obtenir dans leur valise ou de la nourriture. son défaut. Après leur arrivée à la maison vers 18h00, ils effectuent généralement la deuxième séance d'entraînement de la journée dans la forêt (maintenant à cause du virus Corona), sur la plage ou dans le champ qu'ils utilisaient avant le virus Corona. Une fois la formation terminée, ils seront lavés progressivement dans le seau d'eau (généralement comme un produit de la pluie) si l'eau est rare ... il n'y a pas de "douche" car l'eau est, avant tout, considérée comme un élément nécessaire pour cuisinier, mais supposons qu'aujourd'hui soit un jour de chance et qu'ils aient de l'eau pour les deux ... après cette "douche" ils se dirigent pour faire le seul repas de la journée qu'ils apportent officiellement à leur bouche pour faire face au reste des guerriers . Ils préfèrent manger la nuit, afin que la faim ne s'endorme pas. Edmond et sa femme sont les personnes qui s'occupent de ces enfants orphelins et abandonnés, ainsi que trois autres adultes qui les aident dans le travail de formation des enfants et que personne ne peut effacer ce sourire. Ce sont vos anges gardiens et ils vous donnent la possibilité d'être "protégés" d'une manière ou d'une autre.
