Technically this is a Roscoe Arbuckle film (Charlie is in it as a referee for approx. 2.5 minutes). But like others (Tillie’s Punctured Romance - Marie Dressler was the star) once Charlie attained worldwide fame, to cash in it would appear they were Chaplin starring vehicles.

I haven't been this emotionally moved/impacted by a fictional character in a very long time... one of the absolute best I've seen in cdramas, ever

Let's also talk about the people around Gao Qiqiang who are there and utterly loyal to him because of what he did for them in the past.

Qisheng, own brother first, but also for whose sake he first stepped on the path that led him to the end he got.

The Tang brothers, bullies at first but after the Xu Lei incident, forever Qiqiang's men.

Shuting, who only trusts two men and marries one of them.

Chen [x]mo, who also only trusts (the same) tqo men, who was given Qiqiang's old life and whose daughter becomes Qiqiang's.

And then there's the other stuff he does, not entirely out of self-interest: the kindergarten he opens and keeps open until working parents return, providing the kids with three free meals and transport back home.

The old age home with round the clock care, and community for the olds.

Sure, it turns out that these places are available only to a certain category of people - Gao Qiqiang doesn't operate selflessly - but he has thought about what is required and fills that need effectively.

Not everyone is silent about his crimes because they're afraid to speak.

God I love this character.

I think the reason why An Xin works really well as a character is because he is supposedly this two-dimensional propaganda picture, the personalisation of values approved by The Communist Party™️; but personality wise, he's very similar to the crooks he fights against.

An Xin is charismatic and acts jovial. An Xin is stubborn to a fault. Unwilling to change for anyone. An Xin is self-righteous, and certain of his own superiority. Time and time again we are told, that his behavior, his ethics, his worldview is the only correct one, and An Xin judges hardly the moment someone stray's off the approved path. An Xin is distrustful. He is smart, and always looking behind his back. Because he thinks himself smarter than everyone else, he is incapable of truly trusting anyone. It might seem like he betrayed someone else's trust, but no! Actually he just knows better. He always knows what's good for them, even when they don't. An Xin cold and calculating. Willing to throw anyone under the bus for his goals. He is capable of great cruelty. He enjoys fearmongering, and manipulates people's emotions with no hesitation. An Xin is a hypocrite. He is very vocal against nepotism, but uses his connections whenever he deems fit. He hates having his hands tied by regulations, and gets out of then whenever he can, but when others do this, it's betrayal of the police force.

But it's fine. It's all fine and forgiven, because An Xin only uses these skills for GOOD! An Xin does not have to question his gut feelings! Because he knows what are the true values! Loyalty to his Party! It's fine, because An Xin is willing to submit all his wants and needs for a higher purpose. This is probably not the intended reading of the creators, but god, is it a terrifying one.

Conclusion: Fantastic character! A+ 💯💯 i fucking hate him
