Pre-Joseon Sageuks: a Biased and Incomplete List

So, as promised way earlier, a post on pre-Joseon sageuks that I’ve either watched or plan to watch so am aware of them. I am sure there are others but here is what I got. Obviously my takes on them are subjective blah blah blah.

Jumong - arguably the Daddy of all Traditional Sageuks, this one ran for over 80 episodes and had insane ratings. It follows the rise of the mythical founder of Gogureyo tho it takes fantastical elements of his story and changes them for historically plausible ones. It’s very long and very meaty and politics/battle heavy and has a large cast of complex characters (including pretty nifty women and a LGBTQ supporting OTP) but it is anchored by the incredible performance of Song Il Gook as the titular character as he slowly but believably grows from nothing to a hero if at the cost of losing his marriage.

The King of Tears Lee Bang Won - this is basically a half and half beast as (you can tell by the title), it’s set in the last days of Goryeo and early days of Joseon. The time period covered is the same as in My Country and Six Flying Dragons, but this is the most traditional take of them all, even more so than 6FD. Not a single pretty face in the cast (tho Joo Sang Wook is a mighty fine man, emphasis on “man”), this is for the real fans of traditional sageuks. I enjoyed it a lot but if you want to check out pre-Joseon sageuks but have mainly watched youth sageuk stuff before, you should probably start with another drama on this list.

The Great Seer - set in the reign of King Gongmin, the last proper king of Goryeo (his son King U is technically the very last but there are questions as to his status), this is for those of you who want to watch Ji Sang in a sageuk. It’s centered around seers but don’t expect mysticism, this knuckles down to politics.

Shin Don - hi there, another story set in the reign of King Gongmin! From the title, you can tel it centers heavily on the powerful monk who ruled for the King at one point. This has been on my to-watch list forever because this appears to devote a decent chunk of its time to Gongmin X Noguk and I am dying for a proper drama for those two. This is from 2005 so if you do watch, keep that in mind in terms of visuals etc. That cast is lit!

Bicheonmu - this is sort of cheating because it’s pretty much set in China but it involves Koreans so. It’s a drama take on the same story told in a pretty awesome movie. Tragic love, battles, young Joo Jin Moo etc. i am very fond of it. This said, find and watch the Chinese version, Korean one was shredded.

The Iron Empress/Empress Cheon Chu - set in Goryeo, this was another of women ruler centric dramas that had a mini popularity peak in late 00s/early 10s (a trend I wish continued.) it got overshadowed by Queen Seonduk but by all accounts is a solid drama. It’s on my list but I haven’t watched it yet.

The King’s Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang - by the writer of The Rebel and My Dearest. Have I got your attention? Another woman centric ruler tale set in Baekje. Yes, there is a love story. That cast is great, to boot. I have started and liked what I’ve seen but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Before you look at the ep number and faint seeing the number 108, keep in mind that the eps are half an hour long so it’s an equivalent of a normal 54 ep sageuk so if you can watch eg Empress Ki, you are good with this.

My Country: The New Age - Lee Bang Won but make it gay. OK, I kid, sort of (not really) but this is smart and passionate and heartbreaking. If you want a wide scope or lots of politics, probably not a take for you (Six Flying Dragons is RIGHT there), but if you want an intense, emotional tale, come right in!

Six Flying Dragons - to me, this is THE drama about Lee Bang Won. It’s smart and emotional, deals with politics and has heart. It has a large cast of characters I got invested in, OTPs that will blow your mind etc etc.

Faith/The Great Doctor - if you are a fan of old school shoujo like Red River, Basara or Fushigi Yuugi, this or Moon Lovers are your best bet on this list. A time traveling tale with other fantasy elements about a modern day plastic surgeon who ends up being kidnapped into Goryeo during the early days of King Gongmin’s (hi!) reign by a tormented, oath bound warrior played by Lee Min Ho at his hottest (and playing historical General Choi Young. Do RPS at your pleasure), this one is one of my all time favorites.

Seodonyo/Ballad of Seo Dong - I am actually currently watching this one tho I haven’t been posting about it. Set in both Baekje and Silla, this is an angsty love story with a side of politics. It’s filmed in 2005 and looks accordingly but if you don’t mind dated visuals, this is pretty great!

Emperor of the Sea - set in Silla and Tang, this was a huge hit and deservedly so. Our protag is a slave and gladiator and a great naval hero. This is grim and smart and epic. It’s from 2004 so once again, if dated visuals are no-go, skip, but if you want a great story and performances, this has your name on it.

The Kingdom of the Winds - an epic cursed prince narrative, our ML (Song Il Gook at his sexiest) rises from abandoned prince and slave and abused assassin to general, royal and king, sparing time for an angsty delicious love story with an enemy princess. This has serious sageuk bits AND the best shoujo tropes in the business, plus enough whump to keep anyone happy.

Gye Baek - Lee Seo Jin, another sageuk stalwart, stars as the title character in this tale of a Baekje commoner, war slave and general. This is grim but glorious.

Soldier/God of War - this is a traditional war-centric sageuk and grim as hell. Another slave to general tale.

King Geun Chu Go - this is on my watch list; it’s about a warrior king of Baekje. Haven’t seen it but heard good things.

Ja Myung Go - smart and unrelentingly tragic, featuring Jang Ryeo Won and Jung Kyung Ho as doomed lovers and Park Min Young in an evil role, this is great and has deeply flawed characters in the very definition of doomed by the narrative tale.

Arthdal Chronicles - this is obviously a fantasy but the tale of prophesied twins, magical priestess, wars and mysticism is clearly set in a pre-Joseon in terms of aesthetics world.

Alchemy of Souls - like Arthdal this is pure fantasy but also like Arthdal, a lot of its styling is pre-Joseon so on this list it goes.

Moon Lovers/Scarlet Heart Ryeo - ok I think if people have heard of only one drama on this very long list, it’s probably this one. Modern time traveling heroine ending up during the reign of Goryeo’s King Taejo, in the middle of his sons’ fight for the throne, having an epic but doomed romance with shoujo catnip tortured bad boy Lee Jun Ki.

Shine or Go Crazy - if you want a more historical take on Moon Lovers succession fight but still with plenty of hotness, angst and doomed romance, come right in. This baby stars Jang Hyuk, so you know it’s bound to be good. I actually started it and enjoyed it but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Fun fact: while Moon Lovers was hugely popular internationally, domestically Shine or Go Crazy (they aired around the same time), did much better.

The Legend/The First King’s Four Gods - for a long time this was my favorite kdrama of all time and is still probably in my top 10. Ignore the odd first episode, the rest is perfection. Expensive and wonderfully written, this was Bae Yong Joon’s last drama before he retired to rest on his pile of money (if you are young, you probably don’t remember what a big deal he was, bigger than all the Hallyu stars nowadays put together. He basically was singlehandedly supporting the kdrama industry at one point), but what a worthy way to go out. It’s an epic Goguryeo fantasy tale of a prophesied prince coming into his own, with such amazing characters and relationships and OTPs and battles and points about destiny versus free will. It is everything and I kinda want to rewatch now.

The Blade and The Petal/Sword and Flower - ostensibly a star-crossed Gogureyo love story, this really is more about politics. It’s a mixed bag. The visuals are insane but Uhm Tae Woong, while always solid in modern dramas, is out of place in a sageuk (in QSD Kim Nam Gil stole his thunder; there is nobody to do so here but that doesn’t help him.)

Queen Seon Duk - probably the most famous entrant into female power sageuks, this was a mad hit and centered on the titular character’s rise to power and fight for the same with her female nemesis Mishil. If you want love stories, angsty fighter Bidam propelled Kim Nam Gil to stardom as he stole the leading man mantle from Uhm Tae Woong.

Empress Ki - currently rewatching this. It’s set in the waning days of Goryeo but takes place mainly in Yuan. Still, the FL is Korean and a lot of the story revolves around one of her suitors’, a deposed Korean king, attempts to get his land back. As you can tell by my rabid posts, this is a great drama - politics, romance (I ship FL and the Yuan emperor like mad), murder, dysfunction and everything good.

Hwarang - it’s so brain dead it might as well be a brain-eating amoeba in drama form but it did give us both Park Hyung Sik and Park Seo Joon before they made it big in drama world. It’s terrible tho, stay away.

River where the Moon Rises - I have such a love/hate relationship with this drama - I loved the beginning, with our tormented assassin heroine slowly being warmed by the loyal rustic ML with his own trauma. And then Ji Soo’s bullying scandal happened and he was replaced by Na In Woo, aka the actor I like least from any country in all my close to two decades of watching dramas. I tried but I simply couldn’t and I am still mad. This said, if you don’t share my NIW allergy, it’s probably worth a watch.

The Great King’s Dream - if you liked QSD and can’t get enough of the period but want an even more traditional tale, you can do worse than this drama. I liked what I saw but this baby is 70 eps and lacks Bidam so I peaced out. Maybe I will get back to it sometime, but probably not.

Jeong Do Jeon - as you can tell by the title, centers on JDJ and the last days of Goryeo. Not really my bag (time period been done plenty in other dramas and I don’t have that much interest in JDJ) but supposed to be solid.

My Only Love Song - a short silly mess but still probably better than River (which tells the same story) because it doesn’t have NIW.

King Gwanggaeto the Great - 92 eps. I can’t!

The King Loves - delicious love triangle (that goes ALL ways), angst, prettiness, a side of bodyguard romance. What’s not to love in this Goryeo tale?

Sword, bow, and horseback riding for the first time

A “Monstrous Newcomer” in a career-making, historical drama debut

In 2016, in the movie “Master”, Woo Do Hwan played the role of Lee Byung Hyun’s subordinate. Even though he appeared onscreen for just three minutes, he left a strong impression, attracting attention. Since then, he starred in “Save Me” (2017 OCN), taking on the nickname of “Monstrous Newcomer” and setting out on a brilliant career path. The next step he takes will be his first historical drama “My Country” (2019 JTBC).

Tackling a historical drama is an ideal chance for young and promising actors to grow; they have a rare chance to study in depth with multiple superb veteran actors over the long filming period. Woo Do Hwan did not miss this opportunity. His new work “The King: Eternal Monarch” (2020 SBS) leverages 120% of what he learned from “My Country”, and his popularity is surging.

--What kind of work is ”My Country”?

WDH: Each of the characters clash with the others for the sake of their personal convictions. This drama depicts their love and friendships. The country they are each reaching for … in a way, you could say they seek the same goal. Everyone wants a country in which they can live happily, but each person has a different path to that goal. This work skillfully depicts the conflicts that arise in the midst of this.

--Please introduce the role that you play.

WDH: Nam Seon-ho is an illegitimate child born to a family of nobles (yanban), and he has suffered greatly because of his birth. The poor guy is only able to relax his guard and laugh when he is with Seo Hwi (played by Yang Se Jong) and his younger sister Yeon (played by Jo Yi Hyun). However, even under such circumstances, he holds onto his ambitions. He doesn’t want other people to experience the same kind of pain that he has endured, so he strives to become the right-hand man of Yi Seong-gye (played by Kim Young-cheol), the future founder and king of the Joseon Dynasty. However, it doesn’t go as expected and I end up in opposition to Hwi, my dearest friend.

--What things did you pay attention to when creating the role?

WDH: Since it’s a period drama, it was difficult to get used to the way of speaking and tone of voice. It took me a while to get the hang of it. Now  I have the opposite problem, I’m doing my best to shake off the historical tone (laughs).

--The gorgeous hairstyles and clothing were a sight to behold.

WDH: Honestly, at first I thought “Long hair probably won’t suit me…” (laugh). So early on, I participated in many concept meetings and tried out different hairstyles. Even with long hair, there are many different hairstyles that can be made, such as wearing with armor or tying it up. I collaborated with the director to choose the most suitable style according to the situation in the drama. I was able to try on as many outfits as hairstyles, but I really enjoyed being  able to wear the special costumes such as the armor and the inspector’s garments; things we normally don’t get the chance to wear.

--How did you practice horseback riding, swordsmanship, and archery?

WDH: Before filming started, I studied martial arts for about two months. Filming lasted nine months, so in total I was focused on this work for a whole year. While filming action, it’s important to skillfully capture the scene, but the most essential thing is to not to get hurt. For that reason, the cinematographer, my co-stars, and I always had to be in perfect sync. It took time to match movements for the sword fights.

--You became the topic of much discussion when you revealed your magnificent physique in a waterfall during the opening of the drama. What are your secrets for managing your fitness?

WDH: I train on a regular basis. If I only started working out when I knew there were going to be scenes with skin showing, it’d be stressful trying to build up my body in a short period of time for shooting. After all, I don’t know when or where I will have to strip down for a scene! (laugh) Usually I play a lot of soccer, and I’ll go to the gym to train if I have time. If I take care of myself properly as a habit, then I don’t need to worry if my body looks good or if I should put in more effort during acting; I can just concentrate on my performance.

--Was the director’s reaction a good one?

WDH: He was extremely happy, hahaha. They keep trying to make me take my clothes off, so I was like, “Come on, give me a break!” The road to the filming location for the waterfall scene was rugged and steep and it was incredibly cold; it was the most difficult scene. Se-jong even said “I never want to go into water that cold again”.

--A lot of viewers said that “Nam Seon-ho is the most pitiful man in the world.” How do you personally feel?

WDH: I wanted to present Seon-ho as a tragic figure, so I was glad that the audience saw him the same way; it encouraged me to put in even more effort and I worked hard to build up his character. Seon-ho constantly stands on the boundary between life and death, living a life where he might die at any moment. He never manages to accomplish any of his dreams, and it is only at the very end that he realizes what is most precious to him. However, even though Seon-ho is a tragic character, if we just focused on the sadness the drama would be hard to watch and it wouldn’t be interesting at all. Therefore I wanted to show many things with him, such as him being a powerful figure, and the loneliness his power hides.

He was able to finish the drama because he was with Se-jong, his co-star of the same age.

--At what points did you sympathize with Seon-ho?

WDH: There is always a conflict in Seon-ho’s life in that he always has to sacrifice something in order to get something he wants. Seon-ho’s situation is an extreme case, of course, but I think that in our lives there are many moments like his, even if they are small and trivial. Moments when we desire what we can’t have, or throw away things we shouldn’t throw away. There are also moments when we all have to give something up for the sake of a goal that we are reaching for.  In the midst of that, I worried about the things that I should protect, so I deeply sympathized with Seon-ho, whose ideals and emotions were in conflict with each other.

--Your portrayal of the character’s emotions was well-received. When was Seon-ho the most emotional?

WDH: It would be when he heard that Seo Hwi was alive. I had a deep rapport with Se-jong in all my scenes with him. From a certain point onwards, the events in the drama truly felt real, and I fell more and more in love with Se-jong (laugh). I deeply empathized with Seon-ho’s emotions, which made me want to perform even more intensely in this work.

--Concerning expressing emotions, are you the type to do a lot of preparation beforehand? Or are you the type to perform what you feel on the spot?

WDH: I think I am half-and-half. Beforehand, I’ll think, “So we’re filming this kind of scene today”,  why is this happening, and what was the situation before this scene? However, it’s difficult to continuously hold onto emotions because there are rehearsals and blocking out our positions with the director. So I will concentrate on creating the emotion in the moment when acting.

--And what about your mutually dependent relationship with Yang Se-jong, who played the role of Seo Hwi?

WDH: I believe it would have been very difficult if Se-jong hadn’t been there. I relied on him a lot. The make-up room was set up in a large van onsite, and while our hair was being done, we would go over our lines. If one person said their lines, then the other person would just naturally respond with their own lines. We are the same age, not just in the drama but also in real life, so in both the Goryeo and modern eras, we were always communicating well, back and forth.

Se-jong always helped me, and even though we were together on location for very long periods of time, not once did we fight or have a conflict of opinion. We spent our time together as good friends, always being considerate of each other.

--There were many scenes of Seon-ho and Hwi’s friendship that brought out tears, but was there a particular scene where you especially felt the friendship between the two?

WDH: All those scenes where we rescued each other. Especially that scene in the latter half, where Hwi took Seon-ho out of Yi Bang-won’s (played by Jang Hyuk) house; that was memorable. Then in the first half, during the massacre of the Liaodong Punitive Expedition advance party, there’s a scene where we cross swords in the midst of combat and I recognize my dear friend Hwi. That scene was very good and had a big impact.

--What is your impression of Seolhyun (AOA) as Han Hee-jae?

WDH: Seolhyun was truly a “celebrity” to me (laugh). She is one of Korea’s top idols; I’ve seen her movies. When I heard that she would be co-starring with me, I was very much looking forward to it. Once we were actually performing together, I was amazed that her acting was even better than I expected. Seolhyun was the youngest on location, but she had a very mature attitude during filming. In front of a large crowd of her seniors, she played a bold and strong woman. I was impressed.

--The antagonism between Seon-ho and his father was one of the highlights of the drama. How was it like to co-star with Ahn Nae-sang, who played the role of your father?

WDH: Ahn Nae-sang sunbae was like a real father, a very interesting person. Although he’d say “Seon-ho is an impertinent son” (laugh), he worked well with me, and did a lot for me. During breaks, he tells jokes and lightens the atmosphere on set, but once filming starts, his gaze radically changes and he becomes a terrifying father. He’s not someone who hands out advice left and right to juniors, rather, he is a person who reacts kindly and looks after us.

--What are your thoughts on successfully wrapping up your first historical drama?

WDH: I wore hanbok, long wigs, and armor--I got to experience all of these things for the first time. I’ve also never done things like swordsmanship, archery, or horseback riding, so each one of those was a new challenge. Because I have never lived in that time period, I worried about how I should portray it. Despite that, I enjoyed everything. The remote locations that I visited were very beautiful, and during breaks it was a wonderful experience to enjoy the scenery and watch the seasons change instead of sitting in the dressing room. I’ve heard from my seniors that once you’ve done one historical drama, you’ll want to do another, and now I know what that feeling is like for myself.

--What was the most memorable location?

WDH: In the opening scenes, I often went to the countryside, but first I filmed the waterfall scene and the cliff scene. That cliff scene was absolutely terrifying. I scaled the cliff and did the action scene, but I thought...I might actually die if I fall (strained laugh).

--Watching the behind-the-scenes footage, you seem the quiet type but at the Japanese fanmeeting, I feel that you were skilled at speaking onstage. What is your actual personality?

WDH: Do I look like someone who doesn’t say much? I’m definitely not the talkative type, though. Hahaha. I talk a lot when I’m with Se-jong, but the interesting thing is, how much Se-jong and I will say changes depending on the day. On some days Se-jong speaks more than I do, and on other days I won’t shut up (laugh).

--Since filming continued for about a year, was it difficult to break free from the role of Seon-ho?

WDH: Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought about Seon-ho without today’s interview. However, Seon-ho’s sword is in my living room, so whenever I see it, I’m going to remember (laugh). But because I can’t use historical speech in the drama that I’m currently filming, I try to forget as much as possible.

--Currently you’re in the middle of filming the drama “The King”, right?

WDH: In “The King”, one person plays two different roles. The show depicts parallel worlds. In one world, Lee Min-ho sunbae plays the emperor and my character, Jo Yeong, has been by the emperor’s side since childhood and is the captain of the Royal Guard. In the other world, I am Jo Eun-seop, a social service worker whose personality is the complete opposite to Yeong’s. I’m having a lot of fun filming this, so please look forward to it.

--What does “my country” mean to you?

WDH: I believe it’s the people around me. I have family, I have friends, and I also have colleagues. A life where I can live happily with all of them, that is my dream country, I guess. No one goes on without desire, so I want to live together while caring for each other.

--You’ve been called the “Monstrous Newcomer”. With this kind of recognition, do you feel pressured?

WDH: I’m always under pressure. However, I tell myself I can’t lose to it, I have to work harder to overcome it.

--Finally, a message to your Japanese fans.

WDH: 2020 was the year I definitely wanted to meet all my Japanese fans, but filming for “The King” started earlier than expected and hasn’t finished yet. I was incredibly jealous when I heard that Se-jong held a Japanese fan meeting at the end of 2019. When “The King” finishes, I would like to meet you all. Until then, please take care of yourself and be happy. I will do my best to finish my work and greet you in good form. If you haven’t seen “My Country” yet, I definitely invite you to watch it.  I also hope you look forward to “The King”.

Sooo, my recent posts and my rewatch list inspired this poll.

Yoo Ah In in an epic and a character study - watching a warm hearted idealist slowly but inexorably devolve into a man who can kill his family in pursuit of power is something else. In the running for my fave period kdrama of all time.

Jang Hyuk in My Country the New Age - in a drama full of incredible performances, his is the best. Intense and damaged and so so larger than life and someone who travels from antihero to perhaps the villain and yet you get why he inspires devotion. Oh and kinda gay tbh.

Joo Sang Wook in King of Tears Lee Bang Won. By far the most traditional drama on the list, it’s anchored by JSW’s performance as a supremely talented and ambitious man with a great amount of paranoid monster in him.

We are also gonna get Lee Hyun Wook as Bang Won in the winter drama focusing on his queen.

And there was of course the possessed Bang Won in Joseon Exorcist - it’s not the main role so I’d not normally put that in since if we had to list all the times he was a supporting character we’d be here forever but he’s possessed so I have too. Will always be bemused that drama got canceled because people protested inaccuracies, in part possessed YBW killing people (man killed his own family so not sure why the portrayal of hi killing people while possessed is a cancelable offense but whatever.)

After the cello competition, Hyunjin won of course, what with his prestigious teachers and his many years of experience. Afterwards he showed you to your room, which was surprisingly across from his.

A maid came by and left you some night clothes and helped you take your many layers off. You dressed yourself for bed, eventually laying down.

A lamp was at your bedside, along with some books and a pen and notepad. You looked around the room, admiring every inch and detail. The bed was comfortable and you felt warm and safe. Eventually, before you fell asleep, you turned the lamp off and let your eyes flutter closed.

That is until you heard a sudden bang and a blood curdling scream.

You awoke with a start, and you checked the time. 3:22 AM. You sat up in bed and listened closely. You heard soft whispers, and angry voices.

You cautiously got up, trying to make the least noise possible. You put on some slippers that you’d been provided with and opened the door carefully, sticking your head into the hallway. You looked around seeing no one in sight, but you still heard soft whispers echoing throughout the corridor.

“Don’t make a sound, otherwise you’ll end up like the queen.”

You gasped softly. You carefully closed the door behind you as you stepped out and hurriedly made your way into Hyunjin’s room.

You turned his lamp on and shook him awake.

“Hyunjin.” You whispered.

“Mm?” He turned and opened his eyes to look at you. He smiled for a moment before realizing something was wrong.

He sat up, “What happened?”

You shushed him, “We have to go, I think something has happened.” You whispered.

“Like what?” He whispered back.

You debated telling him what you’d heard in the hallway. You shook your head, “I think we have an intruder.”

“Y/n please,”

“Just trust me, let’s get the rest of the princes and the princess.”

He sighed and got out of bed lazily. He found some slippers and he pulled a robe onto his shoulders.

He grabbed a hair tie from his pocket and tied his hair up lazily, “Let’s go.” He said, sighing again.

As he was about to open the door you stopped him. You raised your nightgown up to your thigh, causing him to give you a weird look.

Out of a chafing band, you took out a dagger and pushed Hyunjin behind you.

“Where’d you get that from?” He whispered.

“I always have it just in case.” You shrugged before opening the door and quietly stepping out into the hall. You heard soft groans from around the corner.

You approached and turned the corner, only to find Mr Lee on the floor, a pool of blood surrounding him as he held his stomach.

Hyunjin gasped and knelt next to him, “Who did this to you?”

“Rebels, they’re dressed in white, they’ve invaded the palace sir. Grab your siblings while you can, I’m afraid they’ve already taken care of your mother and father.”

You felt a pang in your chest at the sudden news. The king and queen? What about the guards? The gates? How had they made it through?

“I’m sorry we couldn’t help you Mr Lee.” Hyunjin said, taking the butler’s bloodied hand and squeezing it.

“Don’t worry about me. It was a pleasure serving you.” Mr Lee gave him a weak smile.

Hyunjin sniffed, and you saw the trails of tears leaving his eyes.

“Hyunjin we’ve gotta go,” You whispered.

Hyunjin looked at Mr Lee one more time before squeezing his hand and giving him a sad smile.

“Thank you.” He whispered before giving the man a kiss on the forehead before getting up and leaving with you.

“Get Minjun and I’ll get Sungho.” Hyunjin said as you reached the end of the hall.

You split ways and you opened Minjun’s door carefully. You quickly crossed the room and shook him awake.

He awoke and turned to see you, only to be surprised.

“Am I dreaming?” He groggily said.

“I’ll explain more later, for now get your shoes on, we have to leave.”

“Woah, why are you bossing me around?” Minjun said as he sat up and rubbed his eyes.

“There’s people trying to kill you, we don’t have time to be formal.” You snapped, frustrated.

Minjun’s eyes widened and he raised his hands in defeat. He got out of bed and pulled his slippers on before following you into the hallway.

Immediately, a rebel spotted you. Mr Lee was right, the rebel was dressed in all white and he carried a sword. Not just any sword, a guard’s sword.

The rebel charged at both of you, and before he could reach Minjun, who was behind you, you sidestepped him and slashed his stomach with your dagger.

The rebel dropped to his knees and fell over, groaning in pain.

You picked up the sword and gave it to Minjun, “You know a thing or two about fencing right?”

Minjun nodded, a bit frozen in shock at your quick movements.

At the sound of the commotion, Hyunjin stepped into the hall, panicked, Sungho behind him.

“Oh thank god, I thought the groaning was you.” Hyunjin said, sighing in relief.

You knelt on the floor next to the rebel as Sungho, Minjun and Hyunjin grouped together to make sure they were okay.

“How’d you get in?” You said.

The rebel said nothing, not even bothering to look you in the eye.

You held the dagger against his throat, “Look at me.”

The rebel carefully turned his head to meet your eyes.

“How’d you get in?” You repeated.

“Garden.” The rebel whispered, pressing his hands against his wounds.

“What is your attack plan?”

The rebel looked away. You slapped him, making tears form in his eyes as he looked at you once again.

“Eliminate the guards, eliminate the king and queen, eliminate the siblings, and then overthrow the prime minister and the executive branch so we can lead the kingdom.”

You clenched your jaw, “You’re all a bunch of idiots.” You stood and turned to the Hwang brothers.

“Do you have a bunker?” You asked.

The boys nodded.

“Minjun and Sungho, go to the bunker and stay there. Hyunjin and I will get Eunjung. Minjun use the sword if you need to, stay safe, be quiet, don’t get in anyone’s way.”

“What about mom and dad?” Minjun asked, turning to Hyunjin.

Hyunjin stayed quiet.

Minjun’s breath faltered, “No.” he whispered, bringing a shaky hand to his lips.

He let out a shaky breath and brought his hand from his lips to his eyes. He was violently shaking, as you saw tears fall down his cheeks, off of his chin and to the red carpeted floors.

A sob escaped Minjun’s lips and he fell to the floor, still shaking as he wept. Minjun hugged Sungho’s legs as if he were a child.

You hadn’t noticed, but Sungho also had tears that were trailing down his cheeks. Sungho crouched and held Minjun against him, rubbing his back and cooing reassuring words into his brother's ear.  

Sungho pulled away and grabbed Minjun’s face, forcing him to make eye contact.

“Let’s keep going okay? For mom and dad. For the Hwang Dynasty.” He whispered, wiping away Minjun’s tears.

Minjun shook his head, “I can’t, I can’t Sung, I don’t think I can.” He sobbed, his shoulders shaking with every word he spoke.

“Yes you can. Do it for me, for Eungjung, for Hyunnie. We’re still here, and we need you.” Sungho kissed his brother’s forehead.

“We’re still here for you kid.” Sungho said.

Minjun slowly got up from the floor with Sungho as he wiped his tears.

Sungho turned to you, “Take good care of my brother and sister.”

Sungho turned to Hyunjin and kissed his forehead, “I love you, be safe okay? You’ll make it out alive,” He looked at you again, “Both of you.”

“I love you.” Hyunjin whispered before giving his own forehead kiss to Sungho.

Minjun said his goodbyes to Hyunjin, embracing him for a long moment before kissing his forehead as well.

“I love you little bro.”

“I love you too.” Hyunjin kissed Minjun’s forehead as well.

And then before you knew it, Minjun and Sungho had left. Now, all there was to do was get Eunjung and meet the other brothers at the bunker.

Easier said than done isn’t it?

Jong-suk works as a ghostwriter and has dreamed of writing his own novel. After the death of Kyung-min's wife, he seeks out Jong-suk, a ghostwriter of autobiographies. Jong-suk's message reveals the identity of his deceased friend, and the detective tries to stop the murders. The King of Pigs 2022 Hindi DUB Episode 9-10 will narrate a new chapter in the story. The underlying plot of the show will be revealed in this episode. The reason for Kim Cheol's death will be revealed, but first, Jung Jong-suk will remember his cause of death.
